Peninsula Begins Bay League Battle

Football

• Peninsula High football team ends non-league action with two victories.

The Peninsula Panthers (2-3) won on the road last week against the Compton Centennial Apaches, 28-7. The Panthers played well on both sides of the ball and took control of the game from the start.

At the beginning of the first quarter, the Panthers jumped out to an 7-0 lead when Daniel Schubert found Jack Grimes on a 40-yard pass for a touchdown.

Julius Lagmay then took over the game, rushing for more than100 yards and scoring two touchdowns to lead the Panthers.

The Panthers went into the half time break with a 21-0 lead.

The second half proved to be mostly a defensive battle.

The Panthers gave up a quick touchdown to Centennial on a long run at the beginning of the half, causing them to lose the shutout.

But then the Peninsula defense took over. Alex Bobb recovered a fumble in

the end zone to push the Panthers’ lead back to to 21 points.

Several other Panthers played well throughout the game, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

AJ Seymour had several tackles and harassed the quarterback throughout the night.

Marco Merola helped anchor the defense with solid play at linebacker.

In the secondary, Alex Martinez made several key pass deflections to prevent the Apaches from getting into a rhythm offensively.

Cameron Ghaffari played an important role at cornerback, locking down Centennial’s receivers.

Overall, many Panthers played well against the Apaches and contributed to the victory.

The Panthers have improved throughout their nonleague games, and are looking forward to finding even more success in league.

Peninsula opened Bay League play Friday at home with a loss against the Morningside Monarchs.

Principal’s Advisory Council in Full Swing Government

• Peninsula High’s Advisory Council begins work on school improvements.

By Tyler Patterson The most important person on any school campus is the principal.

Principals have to make sure their schools are running smoothly, keep the students in check, work with teachers and much more. It is fair to say that the principals on our hill are under a lot of pressure and have, at times, too much responsibility.

Thankfully, at Peninsula High School, there is an important group that lightens some of the load a principal must shoulder.

At Peninsula, Principal Mitzi Cress is fortunate enough to have her own group, a council, which helps her make decisions. This council, known as the Principal’s Advisory Council (PAC) meets a couple of times during the year to discuss possible changes around campus.

Dane Colin, a senior at Peninsula and PAC members, believes that PAC is special because it is unlike the other leadership programs at school.

“It brings in all types of kids who want to be able to give back to the school that has given them so much.

Instead of programs like ASB and Link Crew, a lot of what PAC does is behind the scenes. We don’t search for the praise and recognition,” Colin said.

The PAC members were all selected because they showed interest in making the school a better place.

Colin believes that all PAC members “share a selfless passion for giving back and helping those around us, as well as our determination to have our voices be heard and visions brought to reality.”

With ideas ranging from getting new benches and tables to new sinks and bathroom stalls, PAC comes up with plenty of problems they see around the school.

A couple of weeks ago, PAC met for the first time to talk about some of the problems and issues that were noticed at Peninsula.

PAC members were split into smaller groups to encourage more participation and discussion. The groups all picked a different topic for possible improvement to explore and went on campus to search for answers.

The member present the information they’ve gained about their topic of improvement to the other groups.

The leaders identify the problem, give solutions, and argue why their idea of change is necessary.

Principal Cress observes the debate but is silent for most of it. However she will often interject to see what the popular opinion is of a certain idea.

Principal Cress is takes mental notes throughout the process. It is clear that she cares about actually implementing new ideas to the school.

“She listens to all the things we have to say and it is really cool to know that our opinions are actually being heard,” said Colin.

So far PAC has addressed plenty of problems that members believe should be fixed around Peninsula’s campus.

With all that has been accomplished so far, it is hard to imagine a limit on the creative ideas PAC members will have in the future.

When asked about what changes we can expect to see at Peninsula in the near future, Colin simply said, “you will have to just wait and see for yourself!”

PVIS X-Country Begins New Season

• The PVIS cross country team begins another season of breakthrough glory.

By Frankie Reid PVIS 8th grader Savannah Scriven rolled to a big win in the women’s division of the Palos Verdes Invitational’s open race at the PV High cross country course last week.

Scriven, in a breakthrough race, covered the dusty two-mile course that includes the nationally famous Agony Hill in 13 minutes, 36.09 seconds to hold off PVIS 7th grade star Gabi Collatos (13:38.51).

Frankie Reid of PVIS won the middle school boys division in 12:10.60.

Behind Reid, a talented group of 7th grade boys stamped themselves as team title contenders later this month at the Mt. SAC Invitational, the nation’s largest cross country meet.

Kevin Rahman led a parade of six 7th graders in the race’s top 16 finishers. Rahman (12:22.66) was followed

by Ewan Macfarlane (12:38.96), Koa Vetterlein (13:04.83), Tor Gasteiger

(13:14.57), Ryan Hori (13:47.10) and Jake Spivey (14:00.56).

The PVIS 8th grade boys also had several breakthrough races. Dane Dawson, perhaps the team’s biggest surprise so far this season, just missed breaking the 13-minute barrier at 13:00.77 while Andrew Peterson rebounded from an injury plagued 2014 season with a 13: 37.30 clocking.

PVIS 6th grader Dylan Booth had a monster middle school debut at 13:41.10.

Scriven and Collatos will have plenty of help on the Sea Kings 8th and 7th grade girls squads.

Veteran Penny Pope (14:17.52) should challenge Scriven for the top 8th grade spot throughout the season.

Charlie Bracegirdle (14:39.66), Sydney Myrick (14:40.77) and Mikayla Keshtkar (14:58.79) have stepped up to fill gaps created by injuries.

Seventh graders Bella Martinez (14:37.09) and Lauren Naehu (14:42.03) also look promising.

Look, Don’t Look . . . In case any runner should forget its name, they put a sign at the top of the Hill.

Sea Kings Set Sights On League Play Football • The Palos Verdes High football team is ready to put its league winning streak on the line.

By Dean Porter Coming off a 24-0 shutout victory against Carson High School and a 17-7 victory over Foothill High School, the Palos Verdes High School Varsity football team is rolling into league with some momentum.

Palos Verdes had a challenging pre-season schedule, but that doesn’t mean that the Bay League is going to get any easier.

Said head coach Guy Gardner, “I think it’s going to be a very tough league, with Mira Costa and Redondo as favorites and Morningside High School undefeated.”

Senior captain Kyle Messinger said, “We’ve learned a lot from the first half of the season and we are going to take those lessons into bay league.

This is when things get real and things are personal. All we have to do is play Sea King football and play one play at a time.”

Palos Verdes started the season splitting playing time between two sophomore quarterbacks, but the coaches may have finally found a the fit with Jake Nolls.

Knolls thoughts going into league: “The team is very excited for Bay League, and we are looking forward to the teams we play in the upcoming games. We expect them all be tough, and we bring that mentality into practice every day and try to improve ourselves with every chance we get.”

The Palos Verdes Junior Varsity team is heading into league with a perfect 5-0 record.

Head coach Pat Fresch said, “we will be ready for the challenges of league. We are preparing hard for a tough match up against Mira Costa.

Pre-season records don’t count now.

It is the league season. It is all about the next 5 games.”

As the starting quarterback of the Junior Varsity, Lofton Wirtz will approach the next 5 games just as he has all the others.

“We’re going to prepare each week as we normally would, take it one

practice at a time and if everyone does their job we should do well,” said Lofton.

Lofton’s go-to guy is tight end Gage Rowland, who said, “We’re going into this game 5-0, but that doesn’t mean anything now. We’re going to work hard as if it was any other game.

As long as everyone executes their assignments, and we play hard, we’ll win.”

Contributing to the team’s success is the defense. The JV defense has held opponents to an average of less than 10 points a game.

Leading the defense is sophomore safety Cole Wilken.

“We have a defense that is pretty solid,” said Wilken. “We aren’t the biggest but we play well as a team, which is what Sea King football is about.”

New SMERT Buildings Open At PEN SMERT

According to a recent Georgetown University Center of Education and the Workforce Study, nine out of 10 highest-paying college majors are in the following engineering fields: Petroleum engineering, metallurgical engineering, mining & mineral engineering, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, computer engineering, and geological & geophysical engineering.

With this in mind, Peninsula High officially open its new SMERT building as a perfect setting to prepare students Peninsula Opens New Science Buildings . . . Last week Peninsula High for these future jobs. and local leaders opened its new labs and classrooms.

After three years of planning and construction, the Peninsula High SMERT (Science, Math, Engineering, Robotics and Technology) building was officially opened in a ceremony that was attended by those who made the dream a reality.

The PVPUSD Board of Education, the Peninsula Education Foundation, the Peninsula High PTSA, the Brick Fundraiser donors, industry partners, Micah Farrell, Michael Wanmer and engineering teacher Monica Rudder.

Engineering Department Chair, Hassan Twiet, oversaw every detail during the past three years in creating the learning space for Peninsula students.

Peninsula’s MUN Opens Season With Victories Model UN

Last weekend, Peninsula’s Model United Nations team was victorious at the South Orange County Model United Nations Conference (SOCOMUN) held at Santa Margarita Catholic High School.

More than half of all the Peninsula delegates came home with awards competing against some 1500 delegates.

It was the first conference of the year and the Panthers brought home 21 awards. The delegates were led by student advisors Elena Park, Sarah Memon, Katie Shewfelt and Arman Ramezani.

The following students won awards from Peninsula: Commendation Awards: Eunice Lee, Jonathan Fang, Samantha Stone, Ellie Oldroyd, Maggie Chen, Katherine Stam, Krislyn Jobes, John Zurecher, Katherine Liu, Camryn Bush, Sher Shah and Sana Chaudhury.

Sea Kings Band Wins First Place Trophy . . . The Red Tide Regiment

Marching Band placed 1st in Division 1A and also won a 1st place trophy in percussion and a 2nd place trophy in colorguard in its first competition of the year last week. Its next competition is at Rowland High school this weekend.

Ranger Woodland is one of three youth board nembers in the Western United States, to serve on the Sierra Service Project (SSP) Board of Directors for 2015-2016.

He will attend board meetings in Sacramento and Southern California over the course of this school year.

The two other board members are seniors in high school from Sacramento and Phoenix.

Woodland has volunteered with SSP every summer since 2012. The youth leaders have full voting privileges and responsibilities on the board.

Founded in 1975, Sierra Service Project was inspired by and modeled

after the Appalachian Service Project.

It is a non-profit organization providing life-changing experiences through acts of service repairing homes in rural and urban communitie. The type of work ranges from roofing and building wheelchair ramps, to drywall repairs and painting.

Girls Volleyball • The Peninsula High girls’ volleyball team is ready for Bay League action.

Panthers Volleyball Set For A New Season . . . The Peninsula girls’ volleyball team began Bay League action with a victory over Morningside High last week. Chloe Chan and Maxine Wang each had multiple aces against the Monarchs.

Fall season is upon us and that means that Peninsula High School sports are underway.

Notably, the Peninsula girls volleyball team has been causing some commotion already with their impressive milestones with only a few weeks into the season.

Recently, the Lady Panthers won every game at a weekend tournament at Kennedy High School.

Everyone on the team played extremely well, and the Panthers cruised to winning 1st place behind star players Kori Rasmussen and Hannah Hulbert.

This was their second year in a row getting first at that tournament. Additionally, the Panthers beat Morningside High School and came close to winning against both South High and Mira Costa High, barely losing in three sets.

First-year freshman head coach Tommy Draffin said, “We are excited to be facing our first Bay League opponent at home this week. They always have a well-coached team.”

The preseason for us has been a tough schedule but we have worked hard to prepare and improve and the last two weeks are bearing some fruit from our efforts. With our Bay League reduced to only three teams this is

more important than ever. Our coaches have worked hard to prepare us and the team are working together for a strong finish to the season. We will be ready on Thursday for a tough game.”

Freshman leading tackler, linebacker/tightend Luka Kielbasa, had this to say heading into league play: “We are very confident in our ability to run the ball effectively and efficiently. Playing teams like Narbonne and Corona Del Mar taught us to keep our heads on a swivel and never give up.”

Starting quarterback Mitchell Mueller said, “We have a lot of season -changing injuries, but I think if we play disciplined and with the way we are coached we will do well.”

With Inglewood and Morningside not having freshmen teams, the Palos Verdes freshmen will only have three league games.

Homecoming For Football & Cheer

• PV Football & Cheer will hold Homecoming ceremonies today at Palos Verdes High during the last home games of the year.

The League will honor the 1994 Pee Wee Colts as past champions as well other football and cheer squads.

Games begin at 8 a.m. with the Mitey Mite PV Sidewinders facing the Pasadena Trojans. At 10 a.m. the PV Rattlers will face the Woodcrest Generals, at noon the PV Grizzlies will face Grace Brethren Red, and at 2 p.m. the PV Broncos will face the Pasadena Trojans.

The PV Mustangs will visit the Santa Clarita Purple for a night game at Valencia High school.

U14 Feeling The Heat As Season Marches On . . . Bayern Munich and PV United battle for a 3-3 tie in boys’ U14 action.

• Hotshot soccer kids are keeping the goalies busy.

The Trojans in the boys’ U11 Division have scored 23 goals in three matches and will face the second-place Scorpions today at Ladera Linda Fields in a battle of the undefeated.

Ireland, in the boys’ U11 West Division, is the only team in Region 10 not to have allowed a goal this season.

The girls’ U14 Division has already played five matches this season and has Fire & Ice in first place with a 3-0-2 record.

The Blue Stingrays hold a comfortable lead in the girls’ U10 Division with a 4-0 record.

Sea Kings, Panthers Compete At PV Invite Cross Country

The PV Sea Kings and Central Catholic (OR) Raiders were the victors Saturday at the PV Invitational.

The Sea Kings were third in the Men’s race and won the Women’s race, led individually by Robert Franklin, and Jacquelyn Smith. The Sea Kings swept the girls’ varsity individual races and will maintain their #1 CIF/State ranking.

The men’s races were much more competitive as Central Catholic (OR), Flintridge Prep, and PV dueled out in all of the races.

Flintridge Prep’s Jack Van Scooter was the individual champion in a time of 9:58.96 that was 3rd all time.

Peninsula also competed and finished 4th on the mens side and 6th on the women’s. They were led by seniors Cameron Wong and Davis Quan.

Both PV and PEN will return to competition on Thursday, at Polliwog Park in Manhattan Beach for the second installation of the Bay League.

Celebrating its rich history of horses and equestrian events, the day’s events

included a hay-jumping pit, lasso roping, horseshoe matches and hay wagon rides.

There was also a magic act, wild animal show, petting zoo, 3-legged races, water ballon toss and the annual RHE City Officials vs. Lomita Sheriff Dept. volleyball match.
