Rolling Hills Estates Celebrates 60th Year

Happy Birthday

• The City of Rolling Hills Estates celebrated its 60th year on the Peninsula at Ernie Howlett Park.

The all-day event on Sept. 23 included the traditional corn kernel pit, hay jumping pit, wild animal show, comedy juggler act, Scouts, equestrian events, a music festival, the annual City Officials vs. Lomita Sheriffs’ volleyball match and AYSO girls’ soccer. A good Peninsula day.

By Chiara Grimes The Peninsula High School Panthers put up a big “W” against Beverly Hills with their prominent 44-0 win last Saturday, raising its record to 3-2.

The Saturday game, on Sept. 22, was in contrast to their usual Friday game. On this buoyant day, the players demonstrated their array of talents and the result of the team’s hard work and dedication of time .

After losing to Torrance High School in the last game by one point, the Panthers put a good foot forward and proved they were ready to commit.

For Active Families Living On The Palos Verdes Peninsula

The team earned this score with the help of major plays and highlights from Ethan Han, Jacob Hangartner, Aidan Kuykendall, Sebastian Huizar and Trevor Brunn.

At halftime, with 27 points for the Panthers already on the scoreboard, the people in the bleachers enjoyed performances by Peninsula’s band, Song, Cheer, and Flag teams, accompanied by the energized Zoo, the student section.

The crowd also celebrated the attendance of alumni from the multiple national championship winning football team.

Next the Panthers are facing Mira Costa, hoping for a win to negate last year’s rough loss.

PV Invite Host Best Local Runners Cross Country • The annual Palos Verdes Cross Country Invitational attracted another strong field of runners from all over Southern California.

Palos Verdes girl runners Grace Catena, Samantha Steman, Emme Schafer, Gabi Collatos, Ellie Madeja and Natalie Watson all won their races for the Sea Kings.

In the boys’ No. 1 race, Ian Irish finished in 5th place for the Sea Kings with Kade Wong coming in 7th for Peninsula.

The PV Invitational has a unique format where each school’s No. 1 varsity runner competes in one race and then each school’s No. 2 competes in a separate race, etc. The format is repeated for the junior varsity and frosh/soph levels as well.

The Palos Verdes boys had three first-place finishes in the meet with Wade Nygren, Brandon Farnsworth and William Teets.

Freshman Panther Liam Sellaewa finished his race in third place with Sea King freshman Chance Lee coming in 5th.

Peninsula freshman Kelsey Smith ran away with her race for a first-place finish followed by fellow Panthers Seforah Teferi, Kaitlin Lee and Nina Nguyen.

Over The Hay . . . Aside from “Agony Hill” the PV High Invitational offers a wide variety of challenges for runners.

Breaking Down the Walls Support • New program helps students cope with problems in a group setting.

By Nina Li High school is a time when students showcase their abilities, make new friends and prepare for their future.

Along the way, it is hard to read behind the masks these students wear as they

navigate through campus.

When the program called Breaking Down the Walls was introduced to students during an assembly, many were

hesitant to sign up and disregarded the activity.

When Phil Boyte, founder of the program, held another assembly to demonstrate the different activities that would take place, students began to sign up.

Breaking Down the Walls is a comprehensive program that helps bring students together and unify them in the face of their own problems to create a more welcoming and supportive

campus atmosphere.

Three days were dedicated to those who wanted to participate and spanned over the whole school day from first pe-

riod to sixth. About 100 students were chosen to facilitate the other students as they attended the event.

These facilitators were trained for a day on how to lead the others in various activates and discussions. In the end, there were more than 600 students who participated.

“I really think Breaking Down the Walls was one of the best things I experienced at school,” said facilitator Elleen Kim. “It was very inspiring to learn about all the stories of these students who I pass every day at school but never got the chance to talk to or understand.

The environment inside the room was really supportive and respectful. I think the students who participated made a lot of new and lasting friendships and that they feel safer and happier to come to school every day. It helped all of us see how many kind people we have at Peninsula.”

The event began with various icebreakers and getting to know each other, including games and quick sit downs with partners. During that time, students learned what was on their partners’ bucket lists, their childhood, and their current life.

Teacher Slowdown, Slows Down

Is It Over?

• District/Teacher conflict continues (sort of) with hopes there will be no lingering effects for students and families to deal with.

By Jenna McFarland Although a tentative agreement has been reached between the teachers and the School Board, and some teachers have resumed writing letters of recommendation, the impasse has greatly impacted students across the district.

Throughout the past month, the talk throughout the halls of Palos Verdes and Peninsula high schools was the teacher slowdown, or more worri-

some for seniors, letters of recommendation.

At first, students were simply concerned about their college admission, but as time went on and the issue developed into something greater, students began to get involved.

From showing up to School Board meetings, speaking at those meetings, holding signs outside of district offices or even starting a petition, students across the Palos Verdes Unified School District took action for something they believed in -- their teachers.

One student that went above and beyond in her support of the teachers was PV High senior Izzy Barajas.

Along with fellow senior Sarah Ellis, she started a petition in support of the

teachers that received more than 750 signatures.

They went on to hand-deliver the petition to Superintendent Don Austin where their goal was “to make sure he and the other board members understand that all the students are aware of what is going on, are upset about it, and are willing to fight for what’s right.”

When asked what inspired her, she said, “My teachers and all the hard work and dedication that they have put into making me the woman I am today for the past four years.”

She went on to say that “when someone I love is being treated unfairly, I fight for them because that’s the least I could possibly do.”

RPV Candidates Forum Opens Election Season

• The Rancho Palos Verdes Candidate Forum introduces City Council hopefuls to voting residents.

By Chiara Grimes The Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce held a Candidates Forum Sept. 22 for the six candidates seeking a seat on the Rancho Palos Verdes City Council.

Steve Napolitano, the moderator, and the six candidates, Krista Johnson, Ben Kelly, Dave Emenhiser, John Cruikshank, Mathew Vitalich and Eric Algeria, all participated.

Perhaps the most unanticipated candidate is Kelly, a recent graduate of Peninsula High School and a current student at El Camino College where he is studying political science and eco-

nomics.

The forum began with a brief biography of each candidate and then shifted into a discussion on topics involving Rancho Palos Verdes and how each candidate would solve community problems.

“I’m running to protect the character of Rancho Palos Verdes,” said Kelly.

“There is a reason my parents moved here 12 years ago as opposed to anywhere else in L.A. County.”

His goal is to maintain the city’s low crime rate, keep the community politically involved, and doing it with innovation and enthusiasm.

The City of Rancho Palos Verdes will hold its General Municipal Election on Tuesday, Nov. 7 for two City Council seats.

The County of Los Angeles , which provides for voter registration, ballot

materials, polling places and other pertinent election necessities, will consolidate its election activities.

This year the elections are changed to even-numbered years in November

as opposed to the previous odd-numbered years in November. As a result the City Council Member terms of office that begin in 2017 will expire in November 2020, resulting in a three-year term.

Linkcrew In Action To Begin School Year First Days

• Freshman find support in fellow students.

By Lily Sha Peninsula High School’s Linkcrew program put on the Back To Zoo BBQ on Sept. 29 for all freshman.

Linkcrew is a program that is implemented across high schools nationwide. The program aims to help freshmen adjust to high school and incorporate them with upper classmen.

A Linkcrew leader is a position open to juniors and seniors who have an interest in helping the freshmen.

These students go through a series

of tryouts in April and those who make the program start to prepare for the new freshmen class in May. Even before school starts, Linkcrew members put in time and effort to prepare for their new freshmen.

Through two days of training, these leaders learn important leadership skills and learn diverse ways to help freshmen. The leaders then use these techniques in the freshmen orientation, which takes place the day after registration.

At orientation, two Linkcrew leaders are paired together and each pair has a group of 10 students. Large classes of more than 600 students require there to be more than 120 stu-

Boy Scout Troop 276 has awarded the rank of Eagle Scout to Paolo Pietro Speciale at an Eagle Court of Honor on October 28, 2017 at Hesse Park Community Center.

Paolo is the son of Paul and Jennie Speciale of Rancho Palos Verdes and is currently a senior at Rolling Hills Prep School.

As a Boy Scout, Paolo earned 23 merit badges, and his eagle community service project involved over 200 hours of volunteer time to design and build picnic tables for use in an outdoor classroom at Lunada Bay Elementary School.

Troop 276 is a high adventure troop that backpacks the trails of Southern California mountain ranges, Joshua Tree National Park, and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The troop is based in Palos Verdes Estates and meets at Palos Verdes Intermediate School.

Soccer Kids Begin Season With Goals AYSO • The fall soccer season continues with a full slate of matches scheduled for this weekend.

The season is still too young to predict which teams will be in the King and Queen of the Hill finals in a few months.

However, Bayern Munich is the only team currently undefeated in the tough boys’ U11 Division, while the Purple Thunder are 3-0 in the girls’ U12 Division.

The boys’ U9 Cheetahs have quickly scored 17 goals in just two games, while the Super Novas in the girls’ U10 Division have scored 20 goals.

Local Students Step Up To Support Teachers . . . Continued from Page 6 Another way she fought for the teachers was at the School Board meetings where she gave intelligent and passionate speeches along with teachers, parents and fellow students.

Barajas has stood in solidarity with the teachers, but she is not the only one to do so. Over the course of the negotiations, many students spoke out and advocated respect and fair treatment for the teachers.

In addition to standing up for what they believe in, students have also had to take action in order to keep their clubs alive. In addition to not writing letters of recommendations, another part of the teacher slowdown was not advising any clubs, as that is not in their contractual obligations.

Without the input of teachers, countless important clubs on both campuses could have died. However, numerous students took it upon themselves to keep their clubs running. PV

High senior Karinn Murdock is just one example.

As one of the presidents of the Palos Verdes Organization of Women (PVOW), Murdock, along with her fellow presidents, decided that their club was too important to be lost. And so they worked hard to continue holding meetings, bringing in guest speakers and staying active without adult support.

PVOW is just one example of a how students rose to the occasion.

Throughout this whole period of dischord, students across the district have learned to take action for what they believe in, whether it be starting a petition or working hard to keep a club alive.

PV teachers have instilled their students with the value of fighting for what is important to them, and as unfortunate as this situation has been, it has forced the students of Palos Verdes to do just that -- it has forced students to step up.

Peninsula Linkcrew Set For School Days

Throughout the year the leaders are responsible for making sure that their 10 freshmen are having an easy adjustment into high school and incorporate them into the high school environment by informing them and encouraging their presence at school events Linkcrew hosts several events throughout the year, including Cookies and Cram -- a way to help freshmen study for their first set of finals -- lunchtime events in the amphitheater, and their biggest event: Freshfest.

Freshfest is a week-long event meant solely to represent the freshmen at Peninsula. Throughout this week, the leaders have lunchtime activities and decorate the school according to the theme of the event.

The week ends with a big event on that Friday night that provides food for the freshmen and has bouncy houses, music and photo booths.

Linkcrew is an important program for all high schools. It aids those who have no prior experience with the high school environment feel more welcome during one of the toughest transitions of adolescence. At Peninsula, the program does just that.

Triton Yearbook Nationally Acclaimed Yearbook • Palos Verdes High continues its long tradition of nationally acclaimed publishing.

By Jenna McFarland The nationally acclaimed PVHS yearbook, Triton, which wins awards every year for its quality, creativity and content, has been awarded the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) All-American designation this year with four marks of distinction.

The Triton also won the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) Silver Crown Award, and the Jostens National Yearbook Program of Excellence Award.

The rush of recognition is nothing

new to the Triton staff.

In 2016 alone, the yearbook won NSPA All American with five marks of distinction, CSPA Gold Medalist Award, CSPA Silver Crown Award, Jostens USD National Camp People’s Choice Award, Jostens USD National Camp Advanced Design first Place, CSPA Gold Circle Award, American Scholastic Press Association (ASPA) first place with honors, ASPA Theme Excellence Award, and the ASP Editorial Excellence Award. .

The list quite literally goes on and on.

This yearbook program is one of the best programs around. However, it is not consistently the best by chance.

On the contrary, there are many fac-

tors that go into the Triton over the course of the year.

When asked what makes the Triton such an amazing production, Editorin-Chief Lindsey Staub pointed to “the incredibly dedicated yearbook staff, which is willing to make sacrifices for the program.”

Staub went on to describe how staff members are “willing to skip cheering in Red Tide to take pictures on the field or skip relaxing on weekends to copy edit on deadline.”

However, the staff is just part of the recipe for the Triton’s success. Another key part is the advisor of the program, Ms. Pavelka.

According to Staub, “Ms. Pavelka motivates us to work as hard as we do,

and knows how to turn out the best yearbooks possible.”

Susan Pavelka has been making yearbooks for many years, and her experience and expertise is reflected by the endless awards won, along with her dedicated and passionate staff.

Although Staub has many responsibilities as Editor-in-Chief, such as choosing the theme of the book and delegating tasks, her favorite part of being involved in yearbook is the unique perspective and opportunity it gives her to learn about the school.

She gets to see a side and depth of PVHS that few do.

As she puts it, “I love yearbook for so many reasons, but at the top of the

“I always went through these kinds of activities at leadership camps during the summer but having it at school, and seeing personal friends cross the line was surprising and painful to watch,” said facilitator Christina An. “As a leader, it was amazing to watch your whole group come together. I could see that we were all from different grades and social circles but the positive, encouraging interactions was really heart-warming. I hope that the participating students felt safe and heard during the activity. It would be awesome if each person made at least one new friend. Hopefully, everyone does not shy away from saying hello to each other in the hallways,” said An While all of the student facilitators were leading their small groups, the main speaker was Freddie Silveria. Silveria is a speaker who works for Breaking Down the Walls and loves hearing the stories students share with each other.

“Once students and staff get real about being people they learn they are more similar than different,” Silveria said.

“I have also learned students can make positive changes in their communities quicker than most. Kindness and simpling saying “Hi!” to people when you walk by them can drastically improve the culture of a school. I have felt loneliness. I have gone home when I was a kid and told my mom I do not have any friends. I know the power of

this program to help kids and staff to meet new people. It is powerful how it connects sometimes strangers,” said Silveria.

Not only did students participate, but teachers and counselors did as well.

In the gym, they were not teachers or administrators, they were there with the students as equals.

“As a counselor, you understand that students deal with many issues,” said counselor Christine Lopez.

“When I was there, I just felt so proud that there were many students who felt comfortable enough and courageous enough to be able to share their personal struggles. I think Breaking Down the Walls gave the students and adults a newfound respect for the people around them. You do not have to be friends with everybody at this high school, but I think it allowed people to understand that everybody has a story, and everybody who walks on this campus walks with some sort of struggle,” Lopez said.

This was the first time that Peninsula has been a part of Breaking Down the Walls, and from the reaction of the students who attended, it will not be the last. Breaking Down the Walls opened the gates for a more empathetic campus, and it opened the hearts of all of the students.

“This program allows everyone to carry themselves a little bit more confidently since people were able to share in a very quiet way what their experiences were,” Lopez said. “They were able to feel more comfortable and accepted on this campus, which I think is an amazing gift to give.”

Let Rossoblu Take You To Italy, Now A Culinary Journey

By Alexis Ferguson The best food you can eat is at the place where the food originates from.

Most of the time, that means you must travel to this location. The next best possibility is to eat authentic food nearby.

Rossoblu takes you to Italy within one bite of their dishes. The décor is modern and hip but the food and the people make you feel like you are in Italy.

As soon as I was seated, the waiter ex-

plained the menu thoroughly and with an Italian accent. The waiters knew the answers to every question and never were slow on service.

We first tried the braised pork meatballs. The meatballs were served with tomato sauce and toasted polenta bread. The tomato sauce was smooth and simple yet flavorful. The meat was juicy and not dense which is perfect for an appetizer.

I then tried the pappardelle with sausage ragu, ricotta crema, and broccoli. I took a chance on this dish because

I wasn’t sure if there was going to be big chunks of broccoli or not. I was pleasantly surprised to find that when they brought the dish out, the broccoli was pureed into the ragu sauce. I loved this dish and how there were hints of broccoli but you could still taste the peppery sausage.

The ricotta crema was creamy and salty and made the dish so decadent.

My favorite dish was the milk braised pork shoulder with caramelized cabbage. This dish must be their best seller because who doesn’t like tender, fatty pork? Seriously, how could you not order this dish?

The pork fell apart and the caramelized cabbage was so sweet. It was a match made in heaven. The meat was

very fatty but the dish was served with arugula tossed in lemon juice which helped to cut down on the fat. Although I was very full, I had to try some dessert because with this successful of a dinner so far, the dessert must be amazing.

I tried the cinnamon meringue cookie with lemon curd and blueberries. The cookie was so light and crunchy and had a small note of almond. The lemon curd and blueberries added great texture and made the dessert very refreshing.

If you love Italian food, you need to try Rossoblu because you will not be disappointed by any dish. The restaurant serves small plates so I tried many dishes and not one component of any dish disappointed me.

She went on to say that “Because I’ve interviewed so many of the students, I have been able to meet all of these different people I would have never crossed paths with without Yearbook, which is definitely the best part.”

A yearbook is a way for adolescents to fondly remember their youth and time as high schoolers, and the Triton is definitely a yearbook worthy of making PVHS alumni nostalgic for their days as Sea Kings.

Staub is really excited about this year’s book because “we have a really strong leadership team, so I know we’re going to produce a book that the students will love and that we will be proud of.”

However, it’s safe to say that more than just the students will love the book, seeing as the Triton wins awards every year, and this upcoming year is going to be no different.
