By Michael Liu Palos Verdes American Youth Soccer Organization (PV AYSO) has played a part in the lives of many people on the Hill, since many families have or have had a son or daughter on its soccer teams.

In addition, many youths participate as coaches. For about 30 teams, there are nearly 60 young coaches.

Sea Kings Bring Out The Cheers . . . The Palos Verdes High Cheer and Song teams hosted a Kiddie Clinic last week and the future Sea Kings showed off their skills at the JV football game. PV Cheer and Song teams and their coaches, Jama Maxfield and Bria Bigg, helped make the special community event happen.

Peninsula Leads Speech And Debate . . . 139 students from 37

schools attended the fourth annual Loyola High School Invitational last month. In policy debate, the team of Peninsula juniors Atul Jalan and Brian Kong were quarterfinalists (top 8). Kong was second speaker and Jalan was sixth speaker. In Lincoln-Douglas debate, senior Jonas LeBarillec and junior Ishan Gaur were in the top 16. LeBarillec was also second speaker.

Peninsula High MUN Kicks Off The Year At Socomun . . . Peninsula

PV High Drama Deparment Celebrates New Students . . . The Palos Verdes High Drama Department hosted its annual Pizza in the Park drama social welcoming a record number of new students into the program.

High’s Model United Nations club attended the Southern Orange County Model United Nations conference in Santa Margarita last month. It was a special occasion for Peninsula’s club because it was the first chance for many of the new members to compete in the novice division. It was headed by the newly elected secretariat members Joey Black, Sommer DeRudder and Olivia Mathiesen. The novice committees, for both freshmen and non-freshman novices, were focused on the United Nations sustainable development goals - allowing for debate about issues ranging from access to water to how to safely educate women and children. The Peninsula delegates performed very well in this first conference, with novices receiving six outstanding awards and eight commendations, along with Raza Khan taking home a Best Delegate Award. Advanced received three commendations and two Best Delegates from Juliana Yonis and Sydney Bambardekar.

AYSO Draws Students Back To Soccer With Youth Coaching . . . Continued from Page 2 According to Brent Daniels, the Regional Commissioner, PV AYSO is “a program where we allow youth to take on a leadership role in coaching our younger players under the mentorship of an adult volunteers.”

“Our own kids are giving back to our organization and leading our next generation of young athletes. I am constantly amazed by (their) focus, professionalism, and dedication, Daniels said Jenna McFarland, a junior at Palos Verdes High School, has been coaching a boys’ Division 7 soccer team, the Lightning Bolts.

She has been at it for two years and was once a competitive soccer player herself. Though she recently quit, she wanted to remain active in the sport.

To her mind, “high schoolers should coach because they understand the modern-day way of soccer better, have lots of energy, and connect well with kids,” she said.

Another coach in his second yea, is Sebastian Atashi, a senior at Palos Verdes High School. Interestingly, he hasn’t play soccer himself. He re-

• Peninsual High has two undefeated football teams to celebrate this season.

Hands And Feet . . .

Peninsula wide reciever Aiden Lieb makes a leaping catch during the Panthers big win over Culver City.

The Peninsula freshman football team scored their fifth win this season and remain undefeated after beating the Culver City Centennials on Sept. 29.

With just a few seconds into the game Aiden Lieb scored a touchdown for the Panthers and the team rolled to a 49-20 victory.

Henry Thomas also proved to be very promising himself throughout the game getting major plays for the Panthers.

The Panthers are having a promising season and have been working tirelessly after their season was cancelled early last year.

The Panthers have a great win streak going so far and are prepping for their next game, which was Thursday against Mira Costa at Peninsula.

The coaching staff for the freshman team include Larry Campbell, Rick Smith, John Hangartner and Chris Duffy. They have all done a great job with preparing the team this season after the doubts on how Peninsula football would start up again.

Sea Kings Catena Takes Center Stage

• Up and coming cross country star makes waves at the Iolani Invitational in Hawaii.

By Jenna McFarland Palos Verdes High School junior Grace Catena made a name for herself last month at the Iolani Invitational in Oahu, Hawaii.

Placing first out of 185 top-tier competitors in the race, Catena solidified the reputation that began last track season when she was part of the team that took first place in 4-by-800 meter race at the esteemed Mt. Sac Relays.

Although she is now representing her school well, Catena was not always a Sea King.

“I wanted to be in an environment where I could improve and be challenged. I also wanted to be able to maximize my God-given potential,” she said.

She transferred to PVHS from South Torrance High last year, and so far she is loving her time in black and red.

“I love my friends, teammates and coaches,” she said, when asked about her experience at PV. “They’re great people to run with and of course the

By Sebastian Atashi Runners from all over Southern California, including Cathedral Catholic High School in San Diego and Malibu High School, gathered at the famed Palos Verdes Cross Country course last Friday for the annual PV Invitational.

The two-mile course, a change of pace from the typical three miles run during cross country season, is still a formidable task, with hay bales added for the race, and the historic “Agony” hill still a big part of the course.

Agony Hill . . . The Palos Verdes cross country course has a national reputation as one of the toughest because of its long trek up Agony Hill.

There were many runners trying to qualify for Mount Sac and very few were able to. In first place were Gabby and Ewan. The 8th grade runners were excited to win. Ewan even tried to run the race again while him and Koa both helped Camron up Agony Hill.

Ewan said coming in first was a great way to start the season out. The other runners that are going to Mt Sac. are:

As she continues to thrive in her new Sea King home, her future looks blindingly bright.

While she is bound to do great things, her feet remain firmly planted as a she continues to be a loyal teammate.

“My immediate plans are to maximize my potential while I’m at PV, she said. “It would be great to win a team and individual state championship and then go on to run for a college.”

Although focusing on her immediate future, Catena has not forgotten to dream big.

“Of course everyone dreams of going to the Olympics one day, and I’m no exception,” she said.

With her hard work, dedication and natural talent, there is no doubt that Catena will continue to rock the running world.

Local Runners Face The Best At PV Invite . . . Continued from Previous Page The girls are ranked No. 1 and the boys ranked No. 4 in Division 3.

Peninsula High School, which finished strong last season, gained vauable experience on the tough course.

The Invitational features a unique format, where racers of the same relative speed race head-to-head in a oneon-one style course PV won the team titles in the JV Boys, Varsity Girls, and Freshman Girls races, even sweeping the individual races for the JV Boys and Freshman Girls.

Peninsula also performed well, placing 6th in the Varsity Boys team totals, and 4th in the Varsity Girls.

Peninsula was led by some rapid individual performances, highlighted

by Jessica Nye’s 4th place finish in the Varsity Girl’s No. 1 race, and Kiley Atwood’s 2nd place finish in the Varsity Girl’s No. 2 race.

On the boys side, Peninsula was led by Ryan Lee’s 2nd place finish in the Men’s Varsity No. 2 race, and Kade Wong’s 6th place finish in the No.1

race.

Palos Verdes dropped some scorching times en route to the girl’s title as Camille Hines, Olivia Polischeck and Caitlin Stoner all won their individual races.

On the boy’s side, Will Teets and Erik Anderson led the Kings with 1st place finishes in their races, while Ian Irish placed 4th in the No. 1 race.

Despite the dominating performances from the schools on the Hill, arguably the best individual performance of the day went to Malibu High sophomore Claudia Lane, who shattered the girl’s two-mile course record by an astonishing 41 seconds, beating the time of former Sea King runner and high school All-American Rebecca Mehra.

The Palos Verdes Invite continues to attract top runners and competition, showing that Palos Verdes and Peninsula runners are not only elite performers in the South Bay, but along the whole West Coast.

Top AYSO Teams Begin To Separate Soccer

• The fall season is only a few weeks old but some teams look to separate themselves in the standings.

The PV Lightning and PV X-Wings battle for the top spot in the boys’ U14 Division today at Highridge Park. P!nk, sitting in first place in the girls’ U14 Division, will face the second place team, Liverpool Two undefeated teams, the Navy Hurricanes and Storm, will compete today for first place in the girls’ U10 Weather Division at Ernie Howlett Park.

Another important match this weekend will feature the first place Juventus against the second place Liverpool in the boys’ U10 Champions Division at Malaga Cove fields.

Race For The Crown . . . Orange

Crush held back the PV Savages, 4-3, in the boys’ U12 Division at Ladera Linda Park.

Move Into First . . . The Navy Hurricanes downed the PV Force, 2-1, at Ernie Howlett Park to remain undefeated in the girls’ U9 Weather Division.

Battle In Girls’ U14 . . . Liverpool got past Eye of the Tiger, 1-0, to stay unbeaten in the girls’ U14 Division at Highridge Park.

Another Tie . . .

First-place P!nk is the only team in the girls’ U14 Division that has not recorded a tie during the season.

Peninsula Blackout Brings Another Win Football

With confidence at an all-time high, the Panthers varsity football team hosted their “Blackout Game” against Compton’s Centennial High last Friday.

Despite the hot weather, the Panthers were decked out in all black with only an occasional streak of yellow to show enthusiasm for their school colors.

The game began with Peninsula in charge, and stayed that way until the end, winning, 43-6.

Their undefeated streak of five wins and no losses brought out many PVPHS Zoo members and parents, supporting them from the sidelines.

The Panthers put their undefeated record on the line Friday against Mira Costa High School, their first Bay League game this season.

The game showcases not only the skills of a strongly knit football team, but also the talents of sixth, seventh and eighth grade band members from RIS

The Panthers have a strong running game behind its offensive line to help it reach its undefeated record. and PVIS who came to PVPHS to experience how high school marching band feels.

The young musicians played alongside Peninsula’s marching band, encouraging the players and spectators. During half-time, the Peninsula marching band performed many songs with different formations.

The energy of the crowd was also heightened by the Junior Spirit Corp, led by the PVPHS Song and Cheer teams.

The girls performed their routine with the older members and received many audience applauses.

The Panthers have strengthened their football team not only in numbers, but also the number of fans and supporters who show up to watch the team excel in their new-found confidence.

The 2016 year marks the addition of 24 new members on varsity and 31 eager players on the freshman-sophomore team. The rigorous summer workouts and conditioning has paid off for the team as they continue to perform at a high level.
