Frozen In Time . . . Spring sports seasons ended abruptly in March, but are currently planning for a better and safer future.

• The mighty Panorama has returned to publishing after a spring and summer break.

The weekend after PVBA Championship Sunday, a few days after a Peninsula High girls’ basketball playoff game, three weeks into the Little League and spring soccer season - everything shut down.

Season over. Done. No school. No games. Go home.

Now I don’t want to go over again and again how much it

hurt, who it hurt and how it hurt. The whole thing was and continues to be bad.

However, the Panorama staff of young people wanted to get back to publishing. There are things happening and are about to happen on the Peninsula We have a local election coming up, and the Panorama staff want to be involved with more community events and social issues.

High school football and other fall sports are scheduled to begin this December and a number of youth leagues are looking at returning to play this

January. That means practice and spring registration happening in Nov-Dec. So because of that and because we’re all really bored, Panorama will continue publishing as a monthly. We will also produce at least one podcast show a week!

Our new publishing dates for the rest of 2020 will be Oct. 17, Nov. 14 and Dec. 19.

And if things go as planned, under the best possible scenario the beginning of 2021 and next spring and summer could be crazy full of action and hopefully, we’ll be back to publishing twice a month.

Troop 276 Honors Eagle Scout . . . Boy Scout Troop 276 awarded the rank

of Eagle Scout to Ewan Macfarlane at an Eagle Court of Honor in June this summer. Ewan is a student at Palos Verdes High School. His leadership positions in Boy Scout Troop 276 include: Patrol Leader, Quartermaster and Senior Patrol Leader, and he earned 27 merit badges and backpacked over 600 hiking miles with a 7 league boot. His Eagle Scout Project was building 400 feet of wooden fencing as a border between the First Baptist Church of Palos Verdes and the public horse trails of Rolling Hills. The project was completed with his 39 hours of work and with over 100 hours from Scout and adult volunteers.

Before And After . . . One of the most important thoroughfares on the Peninsula

is the road to Rolling Hills Little League from the entrance at Dapplegray School.

The road has been completely rebuilt and redone leading to a newly paved parking lot adjacent to the snack shack. It’s a smooth ride down the hill, but it’s a road built for one vehicle at a time, up or down. So with a newly installed barrier that goes all the way down the canyon side of the road, it will be difficult for cars to pass and impossible to park on the side of the new road. East Coast Colleges Open With Students, Caution Back East

• COVID-19 and Syracuse University open classes for students from all over the world.

By Katie Hageman Syracuse University in New York made the decision over the summer to resume campus instruction for the this Fall semester. It is proving to be a semester unlike anything the students have experienced before.

Students coming from “hot states,” as designated by the state of New York, had to quarantine themselves for two weeks prior to arrival on campus. Some stayed in dorms while others stayed in hotels, with relatives, or in their own off-campus apartment or house.

All students were required to provide proof of a negative test prior to starting classes on August 24. The weekend before classes began students were tested again by the University.

Candice Bina, a student from Santa Monica, quarantined herself in a Marriott hotel in downtown Syracuse for two weeks. She said, “Time in quarantine moved differently. I felt like I was only there for a few days and for a month at the same time. I didn’t leave my room except once to get ice.”

Campus life in general is much stricter than in the past. All rooms have occupancy limits, the quad has circles everywhere marking 6 feet of space, and students are only allowed in the dorms they live in. Even the dining halls have dramatically changed, with food only being offered in to-go boxes for the time being.

The Barnes Center at the Arch, the school’s new gym, is operating under a reservation schedule. Students can reserve a spot on one of the floors of the gym up to 6 hours in advance. The time slots are all for 1.5 hours, and then the gym staff deep-cleans everything before the next group of people come to work out. An outdoor weight room has been added, offering a new experience of working out under a huge tent.

Chris Harvey, a student employee at the gym, said, “The job has changed quite a bit from last year. We patrol the gym, make sure everyone is wearing their mask, and now we designate 30-minute shifts for cleaning.”

While some classes are completely in person, many are either hybrid or entirely online. For hybrid classes, students, typically are assigned a day they are allowed to come into the classroom. When it’s not a classroom day, those students join class over Zoom.

Triathlons are among the most physically demanding events in all of athletics, and Palos Verdes native Duncan Reid is among the top triathletes in the United States. He has competed in events around the world and was one of just 27 men selected to the United States ANOC World Beach Games team.

Wearing masks is being done on most college and high school campuses.

One complaint among students is that it’s not even worth it to go to the classroom on the classroom day because you just end up signing in on Zoom anyway in order to see everyone or participate in group work.

Professors are figuring out what works and what doesn’t, but like developing any new format, it takes some time.

Taking classes through Zoom has posed some challenges. People have trouble connecting, screen-sharing capabilities don’t work properly, and audio issues occur. In some classrooms, those using Zoom cannot hear those in the room when they speak, which results in a professor having to relay that information to the students over Zoom.

Finally, timing can be a bit tight when a student is going from an online class to one in person, and then to another online. Finding a quiet socially distant spot can be difficult at times.

PVNet 3-D Printers Set On Overdrive To Make Protective Face Shields Service . . . Continued from Cover

tients who have tested positive, the resources and equipment available to protect these workers from contracting the virus themselves has lessened.

Seeing this ever-demanding issue, PVNet founder and owner Ted Vegvari has stepped up to create reusable, 3-D printed face shields.

“All masks have been donated at no cost to healthcare workers, firemen, police officers, doctors, dentists, all of the above,” Vegvari said. “Sometimes, nurses and other healthcare workers would come into PVNet to pick up almost 100 of our face shields, and they are in tears.”

Vegvari began this project back in February, when he and his staff had to make a decision as the extent of COVID-19 became obvious: to either shut down their business to avoid losing more money or to attempt to persevere through the challenges that would come due to the virus. He ultimately chose the latter and, furthermore, decided to invest PVNet money into creating face shields for at-risk essential workers.

“At that moment, we made the decision to support essential workers of all types,” Vegvari said. “For instance, you would not think of police officers as healthcare workers, but, in reality, they are the first to arrive at the scene of people in medical distress, making

them at a very high risk of contracting the virus.”

Vegvari’s mission with this project came with understanding and empathizing with the reality of the countless essential workers in the country.

Despite the pandemic, these essential workers must continue to provide their services to the general public. Vegvari’s worry for these individuals is how exposed they are to the virus in their everyday life, especially when faced with people who are not following safety measures.

“If you are an essential worker, you have to go and help all of the individuals in need of your services, including those who are ignoring safety guidelines,” Vegvari said. “And, of course, all of these essential workers then could possibly bring the virus back home.”

These circumstances have given Vegvari and his team of volunteers a purpose to support these workers through face shields. One particular volunteer who, according to Vegvari, has been essential to the process is Jennifer Kao, who spearheads the outreach and scheduling effort of the project. Kao spends eight to 10 hours a day working on getting the word out for the project, such as sending emails and making phone calls. She also works with Vegvari on operating the GoFundMe, which covers approximately 20 percent of the project’s fees, with the other 80 percent out of pocket.

“Occasionally, Jennifer would have

“Without her, simply put, people would not be able to find us.”

Along with Kao, there is a team of volunteers that create the face shields themselves, made up of primarily healthcare workers and college students.

One is Mei Mei Giang, a volunteer who works as an anesthesiologist. Mae comes in about five days a week, including weekends, for about four hours per day to coordinate the fabrication process.

Ice Chalet Down Because Of COVID Casualty • The ice rink inside the Promendade has been a center of activity on the Peninsula since 1981.

By Asumi Shuda With the weather changing and the holiday season coming in a few months, people looked forward to the Christmas Carol shows and other activities at the Ice Chalet in the Promenade on the Peninsula shopping mall. However, with the COVID-19 pandemic, the owners of the Promenade decided to close the Ice Rink on Sept. 27, until further notice.

“It was really a COVID-19-related situation, and whether the closing is temporary or permanent is still unknown,” said co-owner of Ice America Scott Williams. “There can not be an end date because we do not really know when the pandemic will end.”

Williams has managed the Ice Chalet for the past five years and is disheartened to have the rink close. Once the decision was made, the company has worked to thaw the ice and shut down the equipment in the rink. Head figureskating coach Alex Schmainda and other skating instructors were looking to temporarily move to a rink in Harbor City. However, the Harbor City rink was closed as well, due to health code violations. The double closing has been a shock to the skating the community.

“When we were told about the decision via a Zoom call, all of us turned our cameras off and started bawling our eyes out,” Schmainda said. “It has been really rough for all of us instructors because ice skating has been our escape.”

Schmainda has been skating at the Ice Chalet since she was five years old.

Ice Hockey On The Hill . . .

Competitive hockey has been played on the Peninsula since the original ice rink opened in the early 1980s.

Now, after graduating from her undergraduate school, she has been coaching students from ages four to 15 to help these young skaters hone their abilities.

According to Schmainda, the news of the rink closing has been difficult not only on her but the community that has used the Ice Chalet over the years, as the rink served as a hub to create friendships with like-minded skaters and to expand their passions on the ice.

“For some of my students, the rink is all they know,” Schmainda said. “Many of them do not do high school sports, so skating is like their own little team.”

The closing of ice rinks due to COVID-19 health regulations has impacted skaters beyond the Hill. Corona-based figure-skater Kylee Lou explains that the closing of ice rinks will cause many skaters to lose opportunities to practice because there is a lack of flexibility in where and when you can practice.

“Losing an ice rink is really a big deal to skaters because it is not as convenient as other sports like soccer, as there are many grass fields out there but not many with durable ice,” Lou

PVNet Making 1,000 Open Campus Comes Face Shields A Week With Many Restrictions

Continued from Page 6 anatomy and chemistry teacher in PVPUSD, Garrett Potvin, a former intern at PVNet and currently an engineer who primarily works on the fabrication management of the 3-D printers, and Jack McDowell, a former NASA engineer who designed the two most recent versions of the face shields, one of them having hinges to flip when not in use.

“They are all an innovative bunch, to say the least,” Vegvari said.

To date, Vegvari and his team have made almost 10,000 shields in the past seven months, with approximately 1,000 shields distributed each week. At a given time, about 9,000 individuals are wearing Vegvari’s face shields.

However, this feat was not easy.

In order to produce this number of face shields every week, Vegvari’s 3-D printers run 24/7 at maximum speed,

which can cause substantial damage to their equipment and their financial status. “[The work we are doing with the 3-D printers] is like turning your car on and leaving it running at full speed on the highway,” Vegvari said. “Because of this, parts [of the printer] sometimes fail or break, which is when Garrett steps in to fix them.”

Of course, this project has not been easy on PVNet. Due to the reduced number of students enrolling at PVNet due to the pandemic, along with 80 percent of the project’s budget coming from the team’s own pockets, there has been a significant financial loss.

Regardless, Vegvari hopes that he can get increased support from the Palos Verdes community to allow him to continue creating these face shields to protect the essential workers fighting every day.

. . . Continued from Page 4 obvious one being that the platform allows Syracuse to operate as it is this Fall semester. Some professors have chosen to post course material asynchronously, so students can watch lectures on their own.

The social scene is much more laid back than in past years. With no tailgates or Greek life, most people are staying safe and only gathering in small groups. When people are in bigger gatherings, they are quickly split up or receive a lot of negative feedback via social media relatively quickly.

The weekend before school began, a large crowd of 100 or so freshman was gathered on the main quad on campus, and there was a lot of outrage from other students about how unsafe this was and how the crowd wasn’t dispersed sooner by the campus police.

Since that incident, nothing of that nature has occurred again. The university is prompt in communicating what’s going on to all students. Recently, there was traces of COVID-19 in the wastewater in one of the dorms on campus. All students were told to

report back to the dorm immediately where they were tested and told to self-quarantine until results were back, about 24 hours later. Everyone ended up testing negative and the dorm was lifted from quarantine.

Syracuse University requires any student that plans to be physically on campus to complete a Daily Health Screening Form. The school also created a COVID dashboard detailing the amount of student and employee cases within Central New York. The information is updated every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Despite skepticism about resuming in-person learning, everything is going smoothly thus far. Syracuse University has been prompt in handling possible COVID cases and although there is still ample time before Thanksgiving Break, most people on and off campus are hopeful about the rest of the semester.

The week of September 7 marked the third week of classes and another wave of testing will be required for all students.

Since its opening in the 1980s as the Ice Capades Chalet, through its closing then reopening in the late 1990s with new equipment and the ability to host hockey, the Ice Chalet has been a location where beginner skaters could hone their skills in a smaller sized rink.

Williams explained how he also once worked as a coach at the Ice Chalet in 1989 and has seen how the rink has progressed through the years to the place it is now.

“I’m from the area, so I have spent a lot of time at the Ice Chalet,” Williams said. “It’s a friendly rink to skate for beginners and even works as a place for a family outing, so, of course, no one wants to see it go.”

The community’s reaction to the decision to close has been full of sadness and loss, as the rink was a second home for many.

In response, Schmainda said there is currently a petition out to protest the closure, as many feel frustrated due to the decision being announced after the Ice Chalet passed the health requirements against COVID-19. She hopes that the community can gather together to keep the rink and its memories on the Hill.

“A lot of my experience as a skater is rooted in the Ice Chalet, from finding my passion in pairs skating to meeting so many of my friends,” Schmainda said. “Everyone skated there, even my parents. It is definitely a cornerstone of our community, so it’s definitely hard for us right now.”
