Summer Is Over For Everyone

Welcome back, everyone! Summer’s over (although not officially until the 23rd) and school is back in session.

That means we are too.

While some of us took a break to spend long, lazy days under the summer sun, others didn’t. School staffs across Palos Verdes who were busy preparing for a new school year. Peninsula Heritage launched a new eighth-grade program and many folks in the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District settled into new positions.

One local intermediate school principal even tested his knowledge of elementary subjects on the popular Fox television game show, “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?”

So, is he smarter than a fifth grader?

Miraleste Intermediate School Principal Brent Kuykendall is really smart – but more than a “class” of high-achieving fifth graders was the question.

Verdes schools and the holder of a master’s degree in education, tried to recall the answers to questions the average fifth-grader should know on Fox’s game show, hosted by comedian Jeff Foxworthy.

The principal fared well, earning himself $25,000. He also won $10,000 for a well-deserving elementary school in the small town of Shoals, Indiana, as part of the show’s Grade School Give Away program.

“That was really neat,” Kuykendall said. To win the money for Shoals Elementary, Kuykendall was asked for the term for the amount of water vapor in the air. The answer: humidity. “I was very happy to get that one [correct].”

An elated Shoals Elementary School Principal Austin Malone told the audience via a live video feed he would use the money to purchase coats and gloves for the students – items that many of his students come to school without. The money will also be used to buy snacks for the classrooms and pay for educational field trips.

“It was heartwarming but at the same time sad to hear that’s what

schools have to do,” Kuykendall said.

“But it’s the fact of the matter that people around the country don’t have the basic necessities. Thankfully, there are schools out there that are trying to provide those basic necessities.”

The best part he said was having his children in the audience – a cool experience for all.

All in all, Kuykendall said he had fun on the show, even if it was a little “nervewracking.”

This is Kuykendall’s first year as principal at Miraleste but this is not his first year at the school. Four years ago, he served as Miraleste’s assistant principal.

He’s back at a familiar campus and with a staff he knows well.

“I’m excited to be here. … I was hoping my career path would bring me back here,” Kuykendall said, adding that it was bittersweet to leave Ridgecrest Intermediate.

The district’s decision to place Kuykendall at Miraleste was made to bring some stability to the school, said PVPUSD Superintendent Dr. Don Austin. Kuykendall, following Beth Hadley, Kevin Allen, and Matthew Skoll (whose contract was not renewed by the Board of Education), is the school’s fourth principal in four years.

‘Mary Poppins’ Entertains At The Norris Theatre

• Disney’s ‘Mary Poppins’ takes flight at the Norris Theatre with production Stars Gail Bennett from National Tour Palos Verdes Performing Arts opens its 33rd season on Sept. 18 with a spectacular professional stage production of the cherished Disney film about the high-flying nanny, “Mary Poppins.”

Featuring the most beloved songs from the movie, plus brand-new breathtaking musical numbers and amazing effects, “Mary Poppins” takes both children and adults alike on a magical musical adventure where “anything can happen if you let it.”

The stage version of “Mary Poppins,” written by Julian Fellowes (“Downtown Abbey”), revives the music of brothers Richard and Robert Sherman, the genius songwriting duo behind the classic songs featured in the original Disney film.

The iconic score includes such favorites as “A Spoonful of Sugar,” “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” “Let’s Go Fly A Kite,” and of course, the Oscarwinning “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” as well as several new songs by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe.

The Broadway show was nominated for seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Since then, the show has toured throughout the United States and Europe.

The Palos Verdes Performing Arts production stars Gail Bennett as Mary Poppins. She has performed the show’s title role over 100 times in the musical’s national tour and regional premiere.

Her credits include “My Fair Lady” with Tony Award winner Jefferson Mays, “The Drowsy Chaperone” with Sally Struthers, and “A Christmas Carol” with

Christopher Lloyd and John Goodman.

The cast also features Lucas Coleman (Bert); Craig Woolson (Mr. Banks); Kellie Condiff (Mrs. Banks); and Melissa Bailey (Mrs. Brill).

Peninsula Heritage Opens Middle School

By Mary Scott Peninsula Heritage, a private school that has served local elementary students for almost 55 years, expanded its programming this year to include a middle school. Administrators started the process last year by offering a seventh-grade program and continued this year with the addition of an eighth grade.

“This has been the goal of a lifetime!” said Patricia Cailler, head of school. “We are so proud to offer a kindergarten through eighth-grade program at our exceptional school.”

The decision to expand to a K-8 program came at the urging of parents, said Joan Behrens, the school’s director of advancement.

“There are few places that offer the programs that we do. …It’s a smaller environment and it’s a very caring environment,” she added.

Small class sizes and the school’s differential instruction in mathematics

and language arts appeals to Peninsula Heritage’s many parents. A gifted child can grow at the grade level he or she can work at yet still be among other students of the same age.

The addition of the seventh and eighth grades also provides continuity for the school’s students allowing them to complete a full middle school program.

Crews are finishing up the renovations of several buildings at the St. Luke Presbyterian Church, located across the street from the school in Rolling Hills Estates, which will accommodate the school’s expansion. Behrens said renovations are expected to be complete sometime this fall.

Peninsula Heritage was founded in 1961 as Wingrock, a K-5 school in Torrance. The school moved to its current location in Rolling Hills Estates in 1976, when it expanded its K-5 program to K-6. In 1987 the board of trustees changed the school’s name to Peninsula Heritage.

Special Olympics Brings Out The Best People Service

• Peninsula High School student serves up hugs and high-fives for Special Olympians.

Peninsula High senior Sam Meyers heard about the Special Olympics World Games coming to Los Angeles and signed up to get involved.

Last November. he registered to be a volunteer and was recruited to assist the competition manager for table tennis at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Meyers escorted athletes to their assigned courts, set up and took down equipment, retrieved balls during competition, and most importantly, cheered from the sidelines and offered them enthusiastic encouragement with each serve, float and smash.

Prior to the World Games, Sam had organized a team for the Unified Torch Relay Across America, Team Panthers, to help carry the “Flame of Hope” torch through a portion of the streets of Los Angeles as it made its way from Athens, Greece to the Los Angeles Coliseum.

The team raised $1,800 to support the mission of the Special Olympics, which is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition, as

Meyers met athletes and their families from many different countries (pictured here with athletes from Morocco and the United Kingdom) and received an email from a Trustee of Special Olympics India thanking him for his “commitment to the special athletes” and “careful and patient handling” and for “investing so much time for this event.”

Meyers will continue to volunteer for the Special Olympics in Los Angeles, assisting at various competitions and fundraising events throughout the school year.

School District Making Moves For A New School Year . . . Continued from Page 4 “Brent is one of our most successful principals,” Austin said. “He is PVPUSD battle-tested. People know him [and] he’s been successful every place he’s been.”

After watching Kuykendall prepare for the new year, Austin said, “He’s exactly what we expected him to be for Miraleste. He’s off and running like we knew he would be.”

Joining the Miraleste team is Montemalaga Elementary Principal Rebecca Egan, who will fulfill the role of assistant principal.

“She’s a great match for me,” Kuykendall said. “She’s the brain and I’m the hype. … Together we can do great things.”

There’s already lots of excitement and good energy at the intermediate school, Kuykendall added. “We’re looking forward to a great school year.”

Kuykendall and Egan were just two of the district’s staffing changes made since March. Jody Pastell, former director of Student Services, replaced Egan as principal of Montemalaga.

Becky Cash, who served alongside Pastell as director of Student Services, took on a newly created position in the district, that of coordinator of Assessment and Accountability.

Jessica Silberling, who was the coordinator of Student Services, was promoted to director of Student Ser-

vices and Special Education. The district created an administrative director of Educational Services position and hired Kimberly Fricker to fill it. These moves came about as part of the district’s restructuring of the Student Services department.

Montemalaga Assistant Principal Rick Licciardello also joined the district office in the newly created position of coordinator of human resources.

Other changes: The district moved Lunada Bay Elementary Principal Nancy Parsons to Dapplegray Elementary to replace Fred London, who retired at the end of the 2014-15 school year. And the district hired Kelli Keller to replace Kuykendall at Ridgecrest Intermediate, Julie Tarango to replace Parsons at Lunada Bay, and Marta JevenoisRichardson to replace Jane Tasker, principal of Silver Spur Elementary.

Tasker left the district after a year to go to another district. Also, the district hired two new high school associate principals: Jeremy Meadows at Palos Verdes High to replace Richard Boccia, who also retired at the end of the school year, and Lea Toombs at Peninsula High.

The school district, just finishing up its second week in session, has hit the ground running, Austin said.

“I expect this year to be the best year in the history of the district,” he said.

PEN Booster Club Set For Fall Party Booster Club • Peninsula High Booster Club begins planning for All-Sports Kick-Off party.

Kicking off the 25th year of the Athletic Booster Club, the "All Sports KickOff" party will be held Saturday, Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. at a private residence in Rolling Hills Estates.

The "All Sports Kick-Off" event is a free, annual event for parents of Peninsula High athletes.

The Booster Club expects more than 350 people to attend, including school administrators, coaches, parents and other supporters of Panther athletics.

Panthers Football Takes The Heat Varsity Football

Panthers Ready For Fall Sports . . . The Peninsula High JV football team goes up against Mary Star in pre-season summer action at Peninsula High.

Panthers start off strong against North Torrance, but USC recruit Mique Juarez proves too much.

The Peninsula Panthers lost their first game, 40-14, on Friday at home against the North Torrance Saxons.

The main reason for the loss was North Torrance’s star quarterback, Mique Juarez, who accounted for all six of his team’s touchdowns.

The Panthers started strong in the first quarter.

After recovering a fumble on the first play from scrimmage, Peninsula scored when junior quarterback Daniel Schubert threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to senior Jack Grimes.

Schubert, who was named First Team All Bay League last year, completed 23 of 32 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns. The second touchdown pass going to wide receiver Alex Rosemond.

Rosemond had three catches for 26 yards, and Grimes caught 10 passes for 131 yards.

By Dale Pyoun To the average person, the term zookeeper is vague. It sounds familiar, but it has a sense of foreignness to it. But at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School, the

term “zookeeper” has much more meaning and recognition.

Why? It’s because this “Zookeeper” has to manage the Peninsula student section deemed the Zoo. Not an easy task, considering a few hundred students show up at every game.

As the official Zookeeper this year, I cannot express my joy of fulfilling this position. Never would I have imagined

four years ago as a freshmen that my future would include holding such an important post for the school.

Having been Zookeeper for the first time at Peninsula’s first football game this season against North High School, I have experienced firsthand the responsibilities that my job necessitates.

Sure, it was nerve-wrecking, and managing the students was a little stressful. Yet, the role of leading a spirited student section was an experience like none other.

The vigor of the students became more than enough reason for me to know that this year will be worthwhile.

Wearing a safari vest with a safari hat and khaki shorts, I have full control of the Zoo alongside my other Zookeeper.

Attending a school where regulations are not heavily enforced, we are able to handle things without administrators interfering with students during the games.

This is incredibly helpful because it offers a comforting environment for fellow Peninsula High School students.

So what exactly does it take to become a Zookeeper?

Loudness.

You have to be loud at every game.

As a freshman, I remember I would scream chants and lose my voice every game.

While I wasn’t being considered a Zookeeper then, I had fun showing my spirit for the school.

People notice the little things and being loud for three years has helped me achieve this position in my senior year.

To become a Zookeeper, one has to apply for the position as a junior and be interviewed by senior members of ASB, which included the past Zookeepers.

Luckily for me, I was able to obtain this job by showing my spirit and being enthusiastic.

With more games to come, I am incredibly excited to be the Zookeeper once again.

With that first game under my belt, I have higher expectations for future games and expect to make each game one to remember.

I have big responsibilities as a leader, and I know that the Zoo will not disappoint me.

We are full of spirit and ready for the next game.

Sea Kings Play It Cool Until Bay League Action Varsity Football • Palos Verdes hosts first home game against Narbonne, then will celebrate Homecoming against Foothill next week.

By Matthew Gilbertson Despite opening the season with two losses, the Palos Verdes varsity football team has no reason to panic.

The Sea Kings have won two CIF championships in the last three years, and began those seasons with three losses in 2012 and two losses in last year’s championship season.

After losses to Corona del Mar and Moorpark, the Sea Kings play their first home game against a very good Narbonne team.

Some schools may be disheartened after a few tough losses to begin the season, but Palos Verdes continues to prepare for each game with the same intensity.

Head coach Guy Gardner said, “Our goal right now is to come out today [to practice] and be a better football team than we were yesterday…

I think the concentration really has to stay focused on today.”

After losses by scores of 21-7 and 28-6, Gardner emphasized the team’s approach of not harping upon past games, and not looking too far ahead to Bay League matchups.

The Sea Kings have been dominant in league play and have won 23 consecutive Bay League games, a streak

dating back to the 2010 season.

Palos Verdes’ history of playing difficult teams in non-league games is not necessarily intentional.

“Contrary to popular opinion, I don’t think we go out and try to put the toughest schedule together,” said Gardner.

While not sure if there is an advantage to opening the season with a difficult schedule, Gardner said, ”It brings out your weaknesses.”

Said Gardner, “If [we] were to play an opponent that [we] could get away with not playing the best that [we can play] and still come out victorious, that could cloud [our] judgment on how [we] are doing.”

JV Sea Kings Undefeated

• Palos Verdes JV team looking strong early at 2-0.

The Palos Verdes Junior Varsity team has started the season 2-0 after defeating Moorpark High School at home, 23-20, last week.

The Sea Kings were feeling confident after a previous win against Corona del Mar high, 55-28.

Coach Pat Fresch said, “We are playing well as a team, everyone is contributing.”

The offensive rushing leader for the Sea Kings is junior Bobby Gilbertson.

Gilbertson’s combined efforts over both games totaled 450 yards rushing with six touchdowns.

Fresch added “Lofton Wirtz has been a tremendous leader on this team and has five touchdown passes over the two games.”

When asked about how he felt the Moorpark game went, the junior quarterback replied, “It went really well. The line did great. Everyone did their part and we worked really hard at practice leading up to the game. It was a great team win.”

The team’s tight end and linebacker, Gage Rowland, credited the teams win to the field goal and extra point.

“They were very important because we made a 2-point conversion, blocked an extra point, and got lucky when the other team missed a field goal,” Rowland said.

The Mitey Mite PV Sidewinders began the day with a 33-8 wipeout of Sea Hawks. The Junior Pee Wee PV Rattlers pitched a shutout on the next Redondo team, 12-0.

The Pee Wee Mustangs then followed with a crushing, 38-0, win and the Junior Midget PV Grizzlies cruised to a 40-6 victory.

The Junior Midget PV Broncos closed out the first home games of the season with a 37-27 win.

The Flag Division of PV Football & Cheer and Challenger League action will begin at Peninsula High today.

• The PV Mustangs shut out rival in Pop Warner League Pee Wee Divison action at Palos Verdes High.

In an early season rivalry match-up, the Palos Verdes Pee Wee Mustangs battled it out on their home field with the Redondo Beach Sea Hawks and secured a 38-0 victory.

Both teams traded punches in the early part of the game until the Sea Hawks mounted a drive early in the second quarter, marching down to first and goal on the Mustangs 1-yard-line.

But the Mustangs held tight with a tremendous 4-play goal line stop.

After getting the ball back, the Mustangs offense mounted a 97-yard touchdown drive - highlighted by a

Local GirlsSoftball Win National Championships

Champion In The Circle . . . This

is the third National Championship for PV High senior Steffi Best. She won the 10U ASA Nationals in 2009 and the 14U PGF Nationals in 2013, in addition to a second place finish in 12U ASA Nationals in 2011.

• Steffi Best and Rachel Allen each win fast-pitch softball National Championships over the summer.

Two Palos Verdes softball players shined on the biggest stage this summer at the Premier Girls Fastpitch (PGF) National Championships held in Irvine at the end of July.

PGF Nationals are the highest level of travel (club) softball in the country.

Steffi Best, an incoming senior at Palos Verdes High, and Rachel Allen, an incoming 7th grader at PVIS, were key members of two National Championship teams this summer.

Both girls played for squads in the Orange County Batbusters organization, Best in the 18U Premier age group and Allen in the 12U age group.

Best’s team, OCBB Haning/Stith, coached by two legends in the club softball world, Gary Haning and Mike Stith, went undefeated in the weeklong, 72-team tournament.

The Mustangs held an 8-0 lead at halftime. But then the second half began with Mosich recovering an onside kick.

The Mustangs then marched down the field and finished the possession with a 4-yard touchdown run by Nagy.

After another stop by the staunch defense, which has shut out the Mus-

tangs’ first two oppenents of the season, quarterback Shea Kuykendall threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Nolan Rand.

On the second play of the next defensive series Nagy intercepted a Redondo pass and returned it 40 yards to the house for a TD. With all of the momentum on the Mustangs side, the defense held a shutout the rest of the game, while the offense topped things off with a 37*yard touchdown scamper by Calvin Kim. — email reports

On defense, Alex Martinez made several good tackles at cornerback.

Juarez, who will play football for USC next year, was dominant throughout the game.

He scrambled away from the Panthers and made many good plays, notably a touchdown pass that effortlessly flew 60 yards in the air into the waiting hands of his receiver. Peninsula was simply unable to contain him.

North Torrance improved to 1-1 with the win, and the Panthers fell to 0-1.

Local Softball Players Bring Home National Championships

This is the third National Championship for Best, winning the 10U ASA Nationals in 2009 and the 14U PGF Nationals in 2013, in addition to a second place finish in 12U ASA Nationals in 2011.

Allen’s team, OCBB Mascarenas, also went undefeated in the 52-team 12U field. The team had a record of 7-0, winning the championship game against the So Cal Choppers, 2-1, in their closest contest of the tournament.

The PVIS 7th grader also lit up the week-long tournament leader board batting .500 for the week and ranking number 1 nationally with 11 RBI’s.

Pitcher Best and catcher Allen often work out together during the week at various ball fields on the Peninsula.

Best has accepted a scholarship offer to attend Cal Poly San Luis Obispo next year, where she will pitch for the Mustangs and coach Jenny Condon.

PV Rugby Old Boys On The Move . . . PV Rugby Old Boys (PVOB) in only

its second year as a team, won its first major Social Tournament in Southern California at the OC Ravens Beach Cities Sevens during the summer, finishing in first place out of 12 teams in the Social Division of the Competition.

The PV Rugby Old Boys team includes: Forwards: Daniel O’Brien (Captain) Hunter Gonzales, John Bulaich, Karl Biggs, Makini Manu, Matt Gyerman, Willy Hock and Zachary Middleton. Backs: Carl Aguirre, Chad Mensinger, Jonathan DiBacco, Josh Vizcaya, Koa Long and Ricky Munoz.

PV Rugby Old Boys is made up primarily of players who went to Palos Verdes and Peninsula High Schools together with a few friends playing in the Senior Open Division. PV High School Rugby – is open to other kids 14 years and older in the South Bay whose Schools do not have Rugby Programs. Trials to join PV Rugby high school team will be held in mid-early November and the high school season goes from late October through the middle of March.
