Peninsula Scouts Make Summer Improvements

• Peninsula Scouts are out in force this summer making extensive improvements at different schools and parks for all residents to enjoy.

Peninsula High senior Spencer Dalton and members of Troop 277 rebuilt the wooden tree boxes that sit in the center of the gravel parking lot at Ernie Howlett Park.

His team also planted a few new trees that should add to the beauty of one of the busiest parks on the Peninsula.

Palos Verdes High senior Sean Olsen and his crew constructed new heavy-duty benches that will be placed at Montemalaga school just in time for the new school year.

This “summer edition” of PANORAMA is the first time we have published in the month of July, yet this past publishing season seems to have gone by really fast.

As most Peninsula residents know, once summer school is over the entire Peninsula goes on vacation. Residents can be found at Palm Springs, Lake Tahoe, Sunriver, Hawaii and cruises to Costa Rica.

But we’re not going anywhere. We’ll be here at PANORAMA headquarters through the summer working on new webcasts, revamping the websites and finding ways to add more editorial content to this always-changing and growing publication.

Panthers Football Busy This Summer Football

• Fall sports prepare for action during the hot days of summer.

The Peninsula Panthers have started their summer football camp, practicing daily, competing in passing tournaments and improving all aspects of their game.

Coming off a disappointing three-

win season, the Panthers are looking to improve on their record and have a much more successful year.

The highlight of the summer thus far was the Buena Park 7 on 7 Passing Tournament.

The Panthers went 5-1 at the tournament, and won the championship in thrilling fashion over Vasquez. In overtime in the finals, quarterback Daniel Shubert threw a beautiful pass to receiver Jack Grimes in the end zone for the touchdown.

The Panthers’ defense then stopped their opponents on fourth down when Alex Martinez made a great play at cornerback to prevent a Vasquez touchdown.

Several other Panthers played well throughout the tournament. Receivers Alex Rosemond and AJ Seymour both made a variety of catches, and tight end Daniel Ledezma made an incredible one-handed grab for a touchdown in the championship game.

The Panthers won the tournament despite an injury to starting strong safety Marco Merola and an ankle injury to Seymour in the third game.

• The s the second half of summer begins, Palos Verdes prepares for the South Bay Summer Baseball League Playoffs.

By Matthew Gilbertson The single elimination playoffs begin July 27, and Palos Verdes hopes to win the championship once again, as they did last year in defeating Redondo in the championship game.

In its last game, Palos Verdes took on West High and dominated, winning by a wide margin. Senior Wes Kasman had an impressive start on the mound, pitching four innings, allowing no hits and only one unearned run.

Senior infielder Bailey Reid also had a notable performance, tallying three hits.

Sander Alley resumed his regular closing role, pitching the last inning and holding onto the lead for a victory.

While Palos Verdes aims to have a successful playoff run, individual and team development is also a priority during the summer games.

“The summer games help the prior JV and Varsity teams mold together to prepare for the next season, said Kasman. “The coaches do a great job dividing playing time to ensure development of both upper and lower classmen,” said Kasman.

Reid said “This emphasis on development provides valuable experience for younger players. A lot of the younger players get to play against varsity competition so it is good experience for them as well as the upperclassmen.”

A championship is the short-term goal for the summer, but a successful summer is measured by much more than wins and losses.

Alley said he believes “the team is coming together very well and everyone is improving.”

Palos Verdes hopes that the summer is only the beginning of a successful season.

New Program For Athletes Helping Athletes Academics • Peninsula High starts new tutoring program for student athletes.

Peninsula High School is renowned for outstanding academics and philanthropic students. This year, the school will continue this tradition by creating a new program called Athletes Helping Athletes, (AHA).

The program, designed to provide academic support to athletes, was created at the end of the last school year by new seniors Jack Grimes and Tyler Patterson.

ACA has been tutoring students currently attending summer school.

It provides help in almost all subjects with a variety of talented tutors strong in math, science, English, history and foreign languages.

With this variety of tutors, ACA is able to meet the needs of the many students that have requested tutoring.

The best part of the program is that it uses athletes as tutors for other athletes. A great idea because students are more willing to request tutoring from their peers and fellow athletes.

Moreover, because the tutors themselves are athletes, they know how to manage their demanding sports schedules with rigorous academics. They are consequently able to provide advice to

the athletes that come to them for tutoring on how to do the same.

Another benefit of the program is that it provides tutoring to all the athletes that need it. It tutors students who are struggling in their classes and need

to improve their GPA to stay academically eligible to participate in sports.

It also provides tutoring for students who are not struggling, but still need a little extra help in one or two subjects.

Overall, the program is able to help all

athletes in almost every subject.

PVNET Keeps Students Ahead Of The Innovation Curve . . . Local students and instructors keep the knowledge and skills growing during the summer.

By Mary Scott When Ted Vegvari founded Palos Verdes on the Net 21 years ago, his mission was to teach the community about emerging technology, specifically a little thing called the “Internet.”

“In 1995, no one knew how to use it,” he said. Two decades later the Internet is the thread that holds the fabric of our society together and PVNET continues to bring newer technology to the forefront.

PVNET, which recently opened a summer annex at the Promenade shopping center, still provides lessons in basic computing but focuses more on STEM – more accurately STEAM because it includes the arts among science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

The nonprofit tech organization offers classes in robotics, 3D sculpting and printing, solar energy, video and virtual game design, film and video editing, and music multitrack recording.

Preparing the next generation of engineers and designers is an important mission for Vegvari.

American students are “far behind” their international counterparts.

“There’s no comparison,” he said.

To get more girls involved in science and math, PVNET offers an all-girl STEM program.

“Separate the girls from the boys,” Vegvari added, “and the girls thrive in the program.”

PVNET’s programs are to be envied.

Students from elementary to college level partake in classes that aren’t offered in local schools and universities, and adults return to stay current in their skills.

“We are the only place to go for industry-level access to technology for youth and adults alike in this region, south of Los Angeles,” Vegvari said.

PVNET has kick-started the careers of some notable alumni, including director and filmmaker Andrew Thomas Huang, known most notably for his collaboration with Icelandic singer Bjork, and David Ross, one of the country’s top font designers.

Current students are working on virtual reality programs and building equipment for use in search and rescue and 3D aerial mapping. Among the many projects they are working on this summer, the “most meaningful” is a research study to develop a durable construction material for 3D printers out of brine, a byproduct of desalination.

With desalination plants in California’s near future, the students want to provide an alternative to dumping the brine back into the ocean, where it kills marine life and creates a dead zone around the plant.

But making buildings with salt and 3D printers?

Design, Build And Play . . . Students at PVNET begin a engineering project.

The material and method are not approved in the United States – yet.

One of the professional mentors on the research study is Michael Throne, director of Public Works for the city of Rancho Palos Verdes. Vegvari hopes RPV will be the first city in the United States to approve and use the construction material.

Also on the study is an aerospace chemist and a representative from West Basin Municipal Water District, which is currently operating an Ocean-Water Desalination Demonstration Facility at SEA Lab in Redondo Beach.

PVNET isn’t all serious business. It’s also about fun and games. There’s a host of summer classes and events going on at the annex, or the “technology arcade.” Interested in building a quadcopter or racing a radio car?

The tech organization hosts the Promenade 500 every Sunday afternoon. The winning racer gets a free quadcopter.

“We have a lot here for the community,” Vegvari said.

PVNET’s summer annex is located on the second level of the Promenade mall, under Regal Cinemas, at 550 Deep Valley Drive in Rolling Hills Estates.

Little League

• The Peninsula sent its best baseball teams into All-Star tournament action to play against the best teams in the South Bay.

The District 36 All-Star tournament, featuring teams from all four Peninsula Little Leagues plus Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach and El Segundo Little Leagues, saw three teams from the Peninsula reach the championship finals.

The 11-year-old Palos Verdes team won three straight games before losing two against Redondo Beach to finish in second place in the tournament.

The 10-year-old Rolling Hills team also won three games before losing two against El Segundo to finish in second place.

This weekend Rolling Hills Little League will host the 10-year-old Sectional Championships with teams stretching from San Pedro to the Westside competing.

The Palos Verdes 12-year-old team needed to beat Manhattan Beach twice to win District, but MBLL went undefeated in District All-Star action to claim the District 36 banner.

Valmonte Plays Host To District Tournament . . . The 11-year-old Palos Verdes Little League All-Star team played in front of excited home fans and finished in second place behind Redondo Beach Little League.

Pony All-Stars Extend Season Into Summer

Pony League

• The PVP Pony League 13-yearold All-Star team competed in three tournaments this summer.

The 2015 Peninsula Pony League All-Star team was announced on June 6 at the league’s closing ceremonies at Ernie Howlett park.

This year’s team includes former players from all four Peninsula Little Leagues and two players from Torrance Little Leagues. It also includes two 12-year-old players, Tyler Imbach and James Rosas.

Peninsula began its summer action at the Los Alamitos Invitational only one week after the team was announced. The tournament is a “warm up” for official All-Star tournament competition, which began in early July.

Peninsula played solidly in the tournament, posting a 2-2 record and reaching the semifinals.

Pool play highlights included a 13-4 win over Coast Pony and a dramatic come-from-behind,10-9, walk-off win over eventual tournament champion Fountain Valley Pony.

In the Fountain Valley game, Peninsula trailed, 9-2, heading into the bottom of the 5th inning. The team managed to score 8 runs on 8 hits in its final two at-bats to complete the comeback.

Peninsula had two hard fought losses in the tournament, losing 7-5 to Los Alamitos in pool play and losing 3-0 in the playoff semi-finals to eventual tournament champion Fountain Valley despite giving up only three hits.

Leading hitters based on batting average for Peninsula in the tournament were Ryan Wilson (.667), Ryan Strong (.556), Eric Weston, (.500) and Tyler Imbach (.429).

In the District Tournament Peninsula battled hard but came up short losing to Los Alamitos, who finished second in the tournament and advanced to the Super Region tournament, and losing 11-10 to South Bay in an exciting game that was decided in the bottom of the seventh inning.

PV Rugby Excelling At Summer Tournaments PV Rugby • PV Rugby takes control of summer competition.

PV Rugby played some of its best rugby ever to end the month of June by beating Beaumont, 49-7, in the semifinals to earn a place in the Bowl final of the Huntington Beach Surf City 7 a side Rugby.

PV Rugby Old Boys then went on to win the Bowl Final against Ventura, 35 to 29, in its sixth game of the day.

Rugby Sevens is played on a fullsized Rugby field (bigger than a football field) with only seven players a side, which makes for a nonstop, extremely fast game. Each game is two, seven minute periods.
