"Broadway’s Best" Entertains Families Show Time • Peninsula Heritage School students presented “Broadway’s Best” at their year-end, AllSchool Musical last Friday.

Parents, grandparents and friends of the school filled the PHS Amphitheater to enjoy presentations ranging from “It’s A Hard Knock Life” (Annie) to “I Won’t Grow Up” (Peter Pan).

“As students enter Peninsula Heritage School,” explains dance and drama teacher Deborah Wilcox, “they are introduced to the performing arts. We teach the skills of musical theater, so they are competent in speaking with a microphone, using dialogue, singing and dancing. During the year, each grade highlights one of our school’s Character Qualities through song, dance and written experiences at an all-school assembly.”

“The arts,” said Wilcox, “are an integral part of the culture of Peninsula Heritage School. In the performing arts, the children gain amazing confidence as they practice and celebrate their own unique style of artistic expression.”

Music teacher Charles Miller adds, “These students sing in our productions without any vocal track in the

background. They are strong, heartfelt singers.”

Miller also directed the school choir’s performance at this event and taught the sixth graders to play ukuleles.

For the visual arts, under the direction of Danielle Standart, Peninsula Heritage students created their own scrapbook collage that included theater posters, tickets, a “Playbill” and iconic images of New York “These experiences,” said Wilcox, “have great carryover, as our students learn to connect and apply the skills they learn in the visual and performing arts to all areas of our academic curriculum.”

We are looking forward to watching a little All-Star baseball without having to take pictures this summer.

We’ll take in a few of the 10 & 11-year-old All-Star games hosted

by Silver Spur Little League at Ernie Howlett Park beginning this weekend.

And we might check out the Sectional games hosted by Rolling Hills Little League beginning in mid-July.

However, if we get the word that any of the Peninsula All-Star teams are about to knock off El Segundo or Manhattan Beach and are ready to bring home a District 36 banner - you can count on us being there with the camera.

PV Street Fair Marks First Day Of Summer Summer Fun • Peninsula kids take advantage of the 6th annual "PV Teen Night" and spend Friday night enjoying Street Fair rides and the carnival atmosphere with close friends and classmates.

Sea Kings, Panthers, Dolphins, Raiders, Marauders and students from every school on the Peninsula celebrated the end of the school year by attending the carnival section of the 2014 Palos Verdes Street Faire.

Though more than 40,000 people from all over Southern California attended the two-day event, young locals know the best time to attend is "PV Teen Night" on Friday night.

Fire Season Hits Local Entrepeneur Has The Winning Plan Peninsula Early Be Prepared

• Chadwick fourth grader makes his age his advantage and comes up with a winning buisness plan.

Chadwick fourth grader Jake North is an entrepreneurial whiz kid, and his recent second place finish in the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA) start-up business competition should be reason for concern for “Shark Tank” competitors and Donald Trump himself.

Trump admitted as much in his video greeting to YEA competitors, as they prepared to present their business plans to an eight-judge investor panel and 200 spectators at an April 30 event held at Trump National Golf Course.

In Jake’s case, his business, Start Me Up Kids, is a website directed at the market he knows best - other kids. His goal is to develop an online community dedicated to nurturing and promoting entrepreneurship and philanthropy.

After viewing 18 business plan presentations, each with a required format, 6-minute time limit, and individualized request for funding, the judges awarded Jake second place and the full $2,000 funding he requested.

Jake plans to use the funds to expand his website capabilities and purchase promotional materials to spread the news about Start Me Up Kids.

He appeared recently with other YEA participants in a trade show booth at the Palos Verdes Street Faire and received his award there as well.

You can check out his website at http://www.startmeupkids.com/ Sponsored locally by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, YEA is a national program developed at the University of Rochester with support from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. The 33 week curriculum for 6-12th Grade students is provided by YAE and taught by local business professionals, with threehour classes each week.

Up to 24 students, chosen through an extensive application process, may participate each year. Over the course of the program, students launch their own legally formed business or philanthropy from the ground up.

Looking The Part . . . Chadwick fourth grader and Peninsula resident Jake North is getting ready to take on the business world.

The YEA program culminates in the formal business plan presentation, run much like a milder version of the television show “Shark Tank.”

Each YEA participant is vying for funding for their start-up business.

First place winners also have the opportunity to compete at the YEA regional and national competitions.

Even among the select pool of YEA participants, Jake is unique. He first heard of the program from an older cousin - despite being two years younger than the YEA’s specified age range, he persuaded his father to take him to an YEA informational meeting last fall.

Intrigued by the possibility of running his own start-up, Jake asked PV Peninsula CEO Eileen Hupp if he could apply.

Says Hupp, “I told him he could apply, but that I would have to check with the national headquarters to see if they would be willing to make an exception for him. To be honest, I didn’t really think he would complete the application, which was quite a bit of work. Since then, I’ve learned never to underestimate Jake’s drive and his passion for business.”

Once accepted to YEA, Jake at first faced skepticism from the rest of the YEA class, half of whom were middle school students and half high school students from various Peninsula schools.

“The kids wondered what this little kid was doing in the class,” says Hupp, “but once Jake asked good questions and shared some insightful opinions, they quickly came to respect him.”

• A brush fire broke out near PVP-PANORAMA headquarters Tuesday that was quickly put out by firefighters.

The 2-to 3-acre fire broke out on the hillside that faces the Promenade above Indian Peak Road and near the Norris Pavilion.

News reports suggest the fire was ignited by downed power lines, as PANORAMA headquarters lost power briefly before we noticed the flames and smoke on the hillside.

With the official first day of summer coming up, we suggest local residents check on their brush clearing status, smoke alarm readiness and have an emergency plan in place for all family members just in case.

Air Support Critical In Fighting Fires . . . L.A. County fire helicopters made four water drops that were successful in snuffing out the blaze.

• One of the most popular sports on Peninsula playgrounds finally gets a tournament to see who are the best handball players on the Hill.

All 10 elementary schools competed at the 1st annual District Handball Finals hosted by Silver Spur Elementary School a few weeks ago.

Organized by PVPUSD Elementary P.E. staff, each school held tournaments for boys and girls in all grades to determine which players would represent their schools at the finals.

It is hoped that the District-wide tournament will continue to take place and avid playground handball players will get the recognition they deserve.

Wood Bats, Against The Wind, Sun In Your Eyes Peninsula history

• Peninsula baseball players from the 1950s and 1960s were tough.

A lot has changed in the game of baseball since the 1950s - at every level.

Two-piece, multi-composite, precisely balanced, computer-aided designed, $300 bats for Little Leaguers is probably one of the biggest changes.

Not to mention batting gloves, sliding pants and sport sunglasses.

Up until the mid-1970s most kids used wood bats with a layer of medical tape on the handle, and, if you wore a batting glove, it was on just one hand.

In fact, most Little Leagues, even high schools, provided wood bats for its players.

Your coach would come to practice with a giant duffle bag full of bats and you would pick the one you felt would work best for you.

It was no big, expensive thing.

So we’re pretty sure when Palos Verdes Little League changed the field configuration and built its current stadium in 1969, league officials had no idea how bat technology, stronger kids and a strong wind blowing out from behind home plate would change the games at Valmonte Field.

These days hitters that smash hard singles to right field are always in danger of being thrown out at first base because the ball gets to the fence or the outfielder so quickly.

And base runners hoping to get lucky whenever they try to stretch a single into

a double are routinely thrown out at second base.

If there is a good wind blowing, popups that would be an out at other fields are home runs at Valmonte.

It all makes for exciting, unpredictable games where no lead is safe, and every kid has a chance for a home run and a celebration with his teammates.

The catalyst for moving the diamond from its old location in left field was to satisfy neighborhood residents who were tired of dodging foul balls in their streets and front yards.

Complaints about the old field began right after the first year of play in 1955, when the diamond was moved from the Valmonte playground down to the lower field.

According to news reports and complaints written at the time to the Palos Verdes Art Jury and School Board, the

original snack-shack and score-keeper’s box was a two-story wood structure that towered over Via Cardelina and was considered an eye-sore by the residents.

The Art Jury is part of the Palos Verdes Homes Association. Any plans or proposed construction in the city of Palos Verdes Estates must be reviewed and approved by the Art Jury before any building or landscaping work is done.

It didn’t help matters that Little League parents built the field, and then added various structures, without consulting the Art Jury.

Without the trees and the tall fence that is there now, the field and large buildings dominated the surrounding neighborhood.

Entrance to the ball park was on Via Cardelina, and residents complained about street congestion on the weekends. And they didn’t like the loud P.A.

system.

Since the property is part of the Valmonte School grounds, the School Board asked that the field be moved and reconfigured to put an end to the ongoing complaints.

As it stands now, the giant pine, eucalyptus and oak trees that surround the field make it a beautiful ball park.

And the stadium seating, tall scorer’s box and snack-shack make it a great place to watch baseball.

And, with a little imagination, you can hear a little history: the crack of a wood bat against a baseball and the enduring sounds of kids and parents cheering on their teams.

PVLL, SSLL Teams Are Kings, Champions Little League • Palos Verdes Little League and Silver Spur Little League took home King of the Hill and Tournament of Champions honors.

The Palos Verdes Major Pirates won the King of the Hill title by defeating the Rolling Hills Little League Padres.

And the Silver Spur Dodgers won the Intermediate King of the Hill title with a win over Rolling Hills Pirates.

Marlins Swim Above The Rest Pony League

• The Dodgers improbale playoff run ends with the Marlins finishing as the 2014 Pony League champions.

The 10th seeded Dodgers kept close to the one-loss Marlins until the 4th inning, trailing only 2-1. But then the Marlins’ bats went to work and before you knew it the Marlins had 11-1 victory and were receiving their championship trophies after a great season.

The Dodgers’ four playoff wins will be remembered as one of the best runs in Pony League history and will offer hope for playoff teams next year.

Our Favorite Teams

We’re not sure if we have ever picked more than one favorite team to finish our publishing season, but this year we came up with three. As usual we had a lot of teams to choose from going back to the opening day of the fall soccer season, through the PVBA season, softball and baseball and everything in between. We cover a lot of stuff here at PANORAMA, and we’re only going to get bigger. We liked the girls’ U14 PV Eclipse and PV Strikers from soccer. There were a couple of 6th Grade PVBA teams we liked. Also the 12U Chaos and 14U #SwagBag from softball. We also liked the Miraleste track team that had their faces all painted with black war paint. But at the end of a long publishing season, it’s hard not to ignore the long and competitive baseball season and those teams that excel in post-tournament play. We also included two AYSO Select teams that we merged into one because they both win as much as the other.

The Comeback Kids . . . The Palos Verdes Little League Major A’s finished the regular season in fourth place, but finished the year by winning the PVLL championship game over the second-place Red Sox and then defeated some of the best teams in the South Bay to win the Tournament of Champions at Rolling Hills Little League. The last time the A’s lost a game was over a month ago on May 6 against the King of the Hill champion Pirates. The A’s never gave up. They had several come-from-behind wins and one-run victories behind clutch hits from the bottom of the line-up and big-time home runs from its stars to seal the victories.

Laughing All The Way To Royalty . . . The Silver Spur Little League Intermediate Dodgers finished the regular season in second-place, but got hot for the playoffs and won the championship game against the first-place Rangers. They kept up their great play through the King of the Hill tournament and delivered Silver Spur with another King of the Hill trophy. They were also one of the funniest, goofiest and most joyful teams we have seen in a long while. They remind us what Little League is all about - having fun playing great baseball, having fun competing with your friends and teammates, and having fun winning games and trophies.

The Medallion Hoarders . . . If the Peninsula should ever sink into the ocean, it will because the PV Dominators and PV United have spent the last several years accumulating pounds and pounds of tournament medallions and trophies from soccer tournaments throughout Southern California. This week the two teams are representing the Peninsula in Hawaii and will probably bring home another pound of gold and silver to weigh down the Peninsula. We have watched the players from these two teams grow up before our eyes and it’s going to be great fun to see how well they will do as they advance to higher levels in the coming years.

PV Eclipse End Another Banner Season . . . The AYSO Select girls’ U13 PV Eclipse finished up its year with a sweep of the top flight at the Santa Barbara Splash. After sweeping pool play, Eclipse pushed past a strong Camarillo Extra team, 1-0, and knocked off the hosts from Santa Barbara, 3-2, in the championship match. Special thanks went out to honorary “Eclipsians” Ellie and Clara on loan from PV Strikers. Thanks also went out to departing teammates: Ashley Shen, Ebun Kalejaiye and Sophia Ceman.
