Peninsula Gets Ready For July 4th Weekend Panoramic View

• There are plenty of places on the Peninsula where families can celebrate Independence Day.

By Mary Scott Did you know that the Second Continental Congress first voted to adopt the Declaration of Independence on July 2? The southern delegates refused to sign the document as it was, sending its author, Thomas Jefferson, back to the writing table

to make some revisions. The final vote for American independence from Britain came on July 4.

Can you imagine, the Second of July?

July 4 became our nation’s official birthday and celebrations have taken place since 1777. Ships, decorated in red, white, and blue, in the Philadelphia harbor fired their cannons in 13-gun salutes (to honor the original 13 colonies). The celebration also included fireworks – now an iconic symbol of 4th of July celebrations.

Summer Officially Opens With PV Street Fair

Summer Fun

• Peninsula kids take advantage of the annual "PV Teen Night" and spend Friday night enjoying Street Fair rides and the carnival atmosphere with friends and classmates.

Celebrating the end of finals and the school year, Peninsula young people gathered at Peninsula Center for the special teen night.

Sea Kings, Panthers, Huskies, Dolphins, Raiders, Marauders and students from every school on the Peninsula celebrated the end of the school year by enjoying the rides and carnival section of the PV Street Fair.

Though more than 40,000 people from all over Southern California attended the two-day event over the weekend, young locals know the best time to attend is "PV Teen Night" on Friday night.

Rolling Robots Earns Excellence Award

STEM

• Rolling Robots Middle School team earns the highest honor ‘Excellence Award’ at the 2015 VEX Robotics World Championship.

The Robotics Championship, held in Louisville, Ky, in April drew quite a smart crowd. The VEX event is the largest and the most popular educational robotics competition in the world.

More than 500 teams (elementary to university) from 27 different countries competed this year.

‘Team 7700B’ is one of the middle

school teams of the Los Angelesbased company Rolling Robots, a ‘tech workshop’ devoted to teaching the principles of STEM for young engineers of all skill levels.

All team members from five local schools have been enrolled in Rolling Robots’ After-school Membership Program for the past three years.

The VEX World competition consists of a series of robot-based challenges--such as the “Nothing but Net” for the current year, which involves students controlling their robots to intelligently pick up and shoot colored balls into scoring zones--designed to test both the mechanical engineering

and programming skills of its participants to the utmost levels.

Teams custom-build their own robots for the competition, including writing codes to program the robot to complete tasks autonomously.

The exceptional performance of Team 7700B at VEX World, and all their previous achievements earned them the prestigious ‘Excellence Award’ the coveted top honor of VEX World.

Ms. Mallon said that for approximately six weeks prior to the Fair, “We work in our hands-on laboratory and also take field trips as part of our science research. We are very diligent in offering children the opportunity to showcase their individual talents in mathematics, computer, engineering, and art as part of their science team.”

Invited docents are an integral part of the Fair. This year’s docents were all Peninsula Heritage alumni. Several are in high school, some are college students, and a few are college graduates now employed in various fields.

The docents visit each classroom for the presentation of the class project by the students. These demonstrations range from PowerPoint presentations to posters and even short plays, and the docents ask questions and offer comments to the students regarding their projects.

For example, the third graders experimented with the structure of

bridges. They tested different shapes of bridges to see which ones were most effective in bearing weight.

The third graders were divided into small groups, and each cluster of students presented their hypothesis, conducted tests and presented their conclusions.

“We also include at this Fair outdoor tables of hands-on exhibits for the students,” said Ms. Mallon. “We displayed the physics of table-top rollercoasters, offered the opportunity for dinosaur digs, and displayed locally collected fossils.”

Ms. Mallon teaches grades two through six in the school’s hands-on laboratory, with Dr. Mary Wilson instructing the seventh graders, and Ms. Wendy Nguyen leading the kindergarten and first grade students in their lab and outdoor garden studies.

“We strive to make science exciting,” said Ms. Mallon. “This year’s Fair was great fun and a real bonding experience for so many of our students!”

I don’t think I have been able to find the time to write a “crazy talk column” all year, and this one is going to be brief.

First off, all of you are exhausting.

You make me tired. From Rolling Hills to Lunada Bay and everything and everyone in between.

One minute I’m at Peninsula High, the next I’m at Palos Verdes High and I stopped at George Allen Field along the way.

That being said, we’re not done yet!

We have decided to have One More

issue before MY summer break that will be out July 4th weekend.

It will have a lot of All-Star baseball, softball, high school summer sports and local events. I’ll also write a longer “crazy talk column” and explain how and why The PANORAMA gets made and how you can get your photo into the hottest newspaper in the South Bay. Remember, freshest copies and refills can always be found at the Main Library and at Ruby’s. Also, you can look for “back issues” from this year during the months of July and August at those same locations. Back issues are always popular with parents and coaches.

The city of Palos Verdes Estates will play host to community members at the 54th Palos Verdes Independence Day Celebration at Malaga Cove School, located at 300 Paseo del Mar. This good old-fashioned event begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, July 4, and features games and a decorated bicycle parade for kids, patriotic music, and an apple pie contest. (Get your mom’s recipe out!)

The Independence Day Celebration Committee will honor Cliff Meidl as the winner of this year’s Kenneth T. Norris Heritage of Freedom Award.

After nearly losing his legs in a construction accident at the age of 20, Meidl fought back to become a twotime Olympian. The kayaker was chosen by the 2000 USA summer team to bear the American flag and lead them into the Olympic Stadium in Sydney.

Sea Kings Baseball Not Taking Summer Off Varsity Baseball • The Palos Verdes high baseball team keeps the action going with summer tournaments.

By Matthew Gilbertson The Palos Verdes varsity baseball team’s season came to an end with a loss to Bishop Amat in the CIF playoffs, but the Sea Kings are preparing for the 2016 season just weeks after their tough defeat.

The Sea Kings will compete in a summer league against other local teams, continuing competitive play throughout the summer while also emphasizing individual and team development.

Sea King pitcher Jacob Criss highlighted this competitive yet friendly atmosphere by stating; “It’s good to get the underclassmen experience at a higher level while at the same time playing each game with a desire to win.”

Last year, the Sea Kings had a successful summer campaign, defeating Redondo to win the South Bay Summer Baseball League Championship. Sea

King catcher Joe Caparis said that winning the championship “gave us confidence in our own abilities and showed us that we were able to control the tempo of the game inning by inning.”

This confidence set the Sea Kings out on the right foot when practice resumed at the start of the school year, and carried over to a successful regular season.

Palos Verdes played their first summer matchup on Tuesday against Banning High, winning 5-1.

Sander Alley started on the mound and worked effectively, throwing one scoreless inning with one strikeout.

Incoming sophomore Brendan Walsh also started the summer off well, as he doubled in his first summer game as a Sea King.

Along with the weekday games, many retuning Sea King baseball players on all levels continue to improve by preparing themselves for the upcoming months of practice.

Whether playing games, taking batting practice, or hitting the weight room, the summer provides valuable time to improve one’s skills.

Panthers Tennis Stars

Four All-Americans And A Most Valuable . . . Four Peninsula High tennis players - Ena Shibahara, Ryan Peus, Kenadi Hance and Connor Hance - were honored by the National High School Tennis All-American Foundation at a dinner and ceremony at the Newport Beach Yacht Club. They were four of 50 student-athletes chosen from across the country. Ryan was the only freshman and Connor was one of only three sophomores chosen for this - the most prestigious high school tennis award. Only one other school across the country had more than one selection. (Menlo School in Atherton had two.) At the banquet, Ena won, for the second year in a row, the Southern California Most Valuable High School Female Tennis Player Award.

Kings, Champions Set, All-Stars Action Next . . . Continued from Page 13 and Intermediate Divisions, the Marlins scored a 2-0 win over the Palos Verdes Pirates in seven innings to win the Major Division trophy.

The game turned out to be a pitching dual between two of the Hill’s top pitchers, Conner Kronk of the Pirates and Mateo Poncia of the Marlins. The two battled for six innings, and both left the game not having giving up a run.

At the top of the seventh inning, the Marlins got a key hit from Kenny Knapp that scored Phillip Kelly from third. In the same inning, Ethan Wang scored from third on a passed ball, which gave the Silver Spur champions a 2-0 lead.

The Pirates battled back in the bottom of the second, and had runners in scoring position with just one out.

But Marlins’ center fielder Austin Lim made a catch deep in the outfield for the second out and then made a perfect throw to third baseman Jerich Lee, who made the tag on the runner trying to advance from second base. It was the third and final out of the game.

Both teams played great defense and made outstanding plays in the field to keep the game close and intense through seven innings of championship level baseball.

The Intermediate Division championship was the exact opposite of the Majors’ game. The Palos Verdes Angels scored a 15-14 win over the Lunada Bay Giants that saw plenty of extra base hits and action on the field.

After three innings of play, the Giants, which defeated the first-place Dodgers at Lunada Bay Little League’s post-season tournament, held a 9-4 lead over the Angels.

The Angels, which finished in first place in Palos Verdes Little League, battled back to score 11 runs in the final three innings and then held on against the hard-charging Giants to earn the Intermediate King of the Hill trophy.

The long-running Tournament of Champions, which was played at all four Peninsula Little Leagues and featured teams from El Segudo, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach and Manhattan Beach Little Leagues, featured two Peninsula teams in the finals.

The Rolling Hills Little League Majors champion Mets, faced El Grigo from Hermosa Beach Little League in the Major Division finals.

The Mets proved their character and class after falling behind 11-4 after two innings. They kept getting key hits and making great plays to keep the game close.

Highlighted by a grand slam home run from Dylan Seitzer in the final inning, the Mets held a 16-12 lead going into the bottom of the 6th.

But El Gringo also showed a lot of character as well, scoring five runs in the final inning to get the 17-16 win.

The Intermediate Division championship game featured two teams from the Peninsula - the Lunada Bay Dodgers and the Rolling Hills Red Sox. The Dodgers scored seven runs in the third inning and eight runs in the fifth inning and got a strong pitching performance from Mason Jahelka to earn a 17-5 win over the Red Sox. Both teams had excellent regular season records and will have players representing their leagues during AllStar competition that begins this weekend.

Many first year varsity athletes in all sports may feel a bit nervous at the beginning of the season, as new pressures mount and expectations become steeper.

However, competitive offseason games can help relieve some of these nerves. Alley, an incoming senior, said that the summer games “help the new

group of players get comfortable playing with each other.”

Not only must individual players grow accustomed to playing at the varsity level, but also players must learn to play with a new team each year.

Due to seniors graduating, younger players must step up and fill the vacated varsity roster spots. Summer games allow coaching staffs to evaluate players in competitive situations, while also giving players the opportunity to build their team into a cohesive unit by the time the spring season begins.

The Mets defeated the Athletics, 9-3 to finish the season with a 22-2 overall record.

The Mets got home runs from Kevin Kane and Ryan Wilson, and Derek Roah pitched the final four innings.

Kane started for the Mets and pitched three shutout innings allowing one base runner.

The Athletics got key hits from Preston Brown, Peter Brown, Tobe Sullivan and Joe Kelly.

The 13-year-old Pony League AllStars will begin official action this week and will be featured in the next edition of PANORAMA on July 4.
