In celebrating the winding down of their senior year, Palos Verdes Peninsula High School seniors gathered together on the school softball fields to watch the sun set on May 31. Senior Sunset, like Senior Sunrise at the beginning of the school year, is a Peninsula tradition.

Senior Harmont Grenier summarized the event: “It is a great time to reflect with your friends on how far you have come. It feels like just yesterday that we were at Senior Sunrise.”

Prior in the school day, schoolwide yearend events took place. At lunch, various teachers, staff, and classmates gathered around the pool area to watch the Physics students paddle and race across the pool in their cardboard constructed boats. And yearbooks were distributed throughout the morning.

Brent Kuykendall: First Year as Principal Profile • First-year principal at Peninsula High faced challenges head-on.

By Nina Li As the 2018-19 school year comes to a close, Peninsula Principal Brent Kuykendall wraps up his first year at the school. This year was filled with highs and lows, but Kuykendall stood fast and finished strong.

As a professional educator for around 20 years, Kuykendall has spent half of that time as a math and physical education teacher in both elementary school and middle school.

He was an administrator during the other half of his career, as assistant principal at Miraleste Intermediate for three years and later associate principal at Palos Verdes High.

He also had experience as principal of Ridgecrest Intermediate School for three years and as principal of Miraleste for two. While Kuykendall has varying experience working at schools, he has never been a high school principal un-

til this year.

“I feel fortunate to at least have had one year of experience in working with high school students when I worked at PV High,” Kuykendall said.

“I think each level has different challenges and different aspects to the job that are more enjoyable. I have liked every level for different reasons. High school with just more students and more activities results in a lot more to keep track of and attend. There are a lot more things that you have to focus on and stay on top of,” he said.

“I will be very honest, I have absolutely had a blast this year at Peninsula.”

Between the teacher negotiations, student-led walkouts and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges paying a visit, Kuykendall has had a busy year.

“I think it is unheard of to have a year where there is no big event,” Kuykendall said. “This year we had a few of them but my biggest aspect of walking into this is that I am first and foremost an advocate for the students here at the school, but I am also an advocate

for the teachers.

“When the negotiations were going on, and the district and the teachers were not on the same page, that was definitely a challenging situation. The negotiations were completely separate from the happenings on campus, so I did not really have a voice or say in that, but what I did was try to lessen the anxiety for the students and try to find ways to bring people together,” the principal said.

There were many challenges that were faced, but despite this being only his first year, Kuykendall was able to overcome the hardships and stand with his own judgments.

“I was incredibly proud of all of our students,” Kuykendall said. “The students that organized the walkout, the students that chose to walk out and the student that chose not to walk out.

The way the Peninsula students carry themselves and behave not only on that day could not have been done at other schools,” he said.

Kuykendall recently obtained his educational doctorate degree, which

was a big success for him. The program he was in lasted for three years and was focused on educational leadership.

Kuykendall had to attend courses for about two years that taught educational leadership, policies, procedures, practices and more. Throughout that time, he worked on his dissertation concerning the subject of trust between teachers and principals.

“My favorite part (about being the principal) is just hanging out and getting to know the students,” Kuykendall said.

“Just yesterday my morning started by talking to the yearbook team and giving them a pep talk about how proud I was with their outcome.

“Then we had boat races and seeing the students and staff out there smiling and laughing and having a good time was great.

“Then I was able to see a jazz performance and attend Senior Sunset. That is what I love. Seeing the growth of students but also getting to celebrate this stage of their lives.”

Local Japanese Restaurant Draws In Local Food Writer A Culinary Journey

By Alexis Ferguson I am always on the hunt for hot and new restaurants within a five-mile radius of my house. I have driven by Japonica many times and it caught my eye because I love Japanese food but PCH can be a parking lot, so I usually find myself gazing out the window.

Japanese food has a special place in my heart, but I rarely see a modern twist on Japanese food.

I was beyond excited to try Japonica and for the new creations I hoped to savor.

The first item I was drawn to was the salmon skin salad. If this doesn’t sound good to you, I suggest you change your mind because anything fried is delicious. The salmon salad contained salmon skin, fried onion, tomato, ponzu, and a siracha aioli. This is not a salad on every menu but should always be ordered. The salad was per-

fectly balanced with the fatty and crunchy skin, the sweet and crunchy onions and the aioli added a kick complementing the sour and salty ponzu sauce. I loved the layers incorporated into the salad.

The next dish I tried was the brussels sprouts with almonds and a balsamic vinaigrette. This dish was listed as popular, so I immediately noticed it, but I was interested in a sweet version of brussel sprouts. The brussel sprouts were crispy and super-hot on the inside so I knew they were fried, which is always a plus to any dish.

The almonds were sweet and the balsamic vinegar cut down on the fat from the brussel sprouts but also added more sweetness. This was my favorite dish that I tried because it was unique, and I love anything with balsamic vinegar.

Next, I tried the Japanese fried chicken with a sweet and spicy sesame sauce.

Whenever I go to a Japanese restaurant, I must get fried chicken - it’s just necessary. What I enjoyed most about the chicken was the thick coating and how crispy the outside was.

Without the skin, a crunchy outside could be hard to achieve but Japonica succeeded. The sauce added a sweet note and reminded me of Korean fried chicken.

Lastly, I tried the wagyu ribeye. I was brought the meat raw and the server cooked the meat on a small hot plate on our table, which was great because meat tastes best right off the grill. The meat was super tender and fatty and seasoned perfectly. Although this dish was amazing, I don’t think it was worth $23 for three thin slices of wagyu.

I know the price because it is from a good source, but I wouldn’t order the wagyu again. Overall, I enjoyed all the dishes and the unique flare they all brought to my taste buds.

Coffee And Music Add FlavorTo Student Life Chllin • Summer nights perfect for Senior Coffee House at Peninsula.

By Nina Li As the school year comes to a close, graduating Panthers held one final Senior Coffee House, commemorating their senior year in a musical way.

Although named "Senior" Coffee House May 30, all students were welcome to the finale.

Coffee House is a tradition where students are invited to go on the amphitheater stage and showcase their musical talents.

Students sing, play an instrument, rap, dance and more. It is an evening where people can enjoy sitting in the grass with blankets wrapped around them while listening to their peers demonstrate their abilities.

In addition to coffee, students are

offered hot cocoa and other snacks.

The atmosphere was calm and relaxed with many Panthers performing on the stage.

“The atmosphere was really chill,” Sara Fang said. “The performers were joking around with everyone in the crowd so it felt super comfortable to be there.”

Music is a form of artistic expression and the students were able to exercise that freedom during this time. It is unfortunate that this will be the last Coffee House for the seniors and for the year, but this definitely marked their last hurrah as high school students and sent them off on a good note.

“I felt that it was really cool to be able to perform and give everyone one last event before the end of school,” Diego Sheng said. “I am so glad I was able to make people laugh and feel good about their last Coffee House with the seniors.”

Godbold Representing Team USA This Summer

Volleyball

• Clarke Godbold is only a sophomore at Peninsula High School, but his achievements are far beyond his years.

Godbold has been a varsity starter since freshman year and has helped lead Peninsula to consecutive winning seasons in 2017 and 2018. Now, Godbold will have to put his skills to a tougher task as he represents team USA this summer. Godbold traveled to Costa Rica and competed at a tryout for many days.

Only 18 players from around the country were selected to try out and six were cut, leaving 12 roster spots.

Godbold was happy to announce that he earned a spot on the roster after days of hard work.

The team is mainly juniors and sophomores and will compete against other countries this summer.

Godbold called the whole experience, ‘’exciting and very cool to go to Costa Rica.’’ Godbold has been playing competitively since 8th grade and is beyond thrilled for this opportunity.

PVLL Gets Busy For Closing Day Palos Verdes Little League Closing Day started with a bang as the minors Giants played the Orioles.

The Orioles started out hot as they took the lead with help from Cooper Sheriff and Will Gardner, but the Giants weren’t giving up as they fought hard and with great pitching from closer Caleb Turse and great offense from Harrison Checketts led them to the win in a 14-10 game.

The Indians faced the Red Sox in the Intermediate Division champinship game. The Red Sox took an early lead and never let up as they scored 11 runs in the win. Brooks Mayre was a key in that offense. The Indians couldn’t take

the lead, but Asher Friedman hit his first home run as a 9-year-old to highlight the game. The Red Sox won 11-4.

The Dodger took on the Angels in the Majors Division championship game. The Dodgers pulled ahead and never let up as they won 8-1.

The seven run lead came mostly from Sebastian Winkler, who hit a dinger and pitched several scoreless innings. The Angels couldn’t do anything while he was pitching.

Closing day ended with the award ceremony. All of the 12-year old’s received plaques.

Closing Day Hits Peninsula Baseball

Little League

• All four Peninsula Little Leagues held Closing Day ceremonies Saturday and are now playing in either the King of the Hill tournament or Tournament of Champions.

The Rolling Hills Little League Minors Blue Jays were the only team to finish the season without a loss, while Rolling Hills Red Sox Kaden Stone l e d the Peninsula home run list with 12.

Only 22 players on the Peninsula hit home runs this season, while 94 players hit at least one last year.

Rockies Rise Up For Championship Junior League

• The first season of Junior League is over with the Angels winning the regular-season race while the Rockies took the tournament championship.

Behind the strong pitching of Paul Thangavelu, the Rockies defeated the Red Sox and the Angels in the championship game to win the first Junior League playoff tournament.

The Angels finished the regular season with a 3-3 tie against the Rockies, and then defeated the Yankees to reach the final playoff game.

Panthers Enjoy Senior Traditions

. . . Continued from Page 2 Many seniors brought these books and their Sharpies to the senior gathering at night and wrote messages to friends they would soon be leaving.

While many students are staying fairly local for the next several years, many others will be experiencing some major weather changes as they move farther east for college.

For seniors like Isabel Frandsen, Senior Sunset was when individuals realized that they are almost done with high school. “I am really going to miss these people,” Frandsen said. “They are like family.”

As yearbooks and thoughtful words were exchanged, everyone ate dinner provided by Peninsula ASB from L&L Hawaiian Barbeque. The food available included chicken katsu, beef, rice, and macaroni salad. Some seniors ate on the grass with friends, while others sat at tables that were filled with printed photographs of students at various school events, from Homecoming to football games to Prom.

The photos served as a reminder that although many school events were

in the past, events such as Baccalaureate and Graduation were only days away.

The pictures were tapped to the table so the wind would not blow them away, but students were encouraged to untape them and take them home as mementos.

“Senior year felt like it went by so quickly,” Roopsha Chatterjee said. “But seeing the photos on the table summed up the year for me and helped me reflect on some of my favorite memories.”

Senior Sunset began at six o’clock

even though the sun did not actually set until around eight. This left students with plenty of time to eat, talk with friends, and play games. Basketball games took place on one side of the fields while spike ball and football, among other activities, were being played on the other side.

Clara Deley, a senior, also at the event, said, “I had a great time during the Senior Sunset because I was able to chill with my friends and also run around tossing a football.”

Students took advantage of the “golden hour” lighting and posed for many photos with one another.

Senior Tommy Jankowski regarded Thursday night as “one of my favorite times of the year, where my friends and I were able to hang out, play spike ball, eat tasty food, and spend time together for one of the last times.”

The sky filled with yellows and oranges as students wrapped in their blankets and thought about how one week from then, they would be walking across a stage to receive their high school diploma.
