Valmonte Garden Open For Spring Visits Gardens • The Peninsula garden community is set for an active spring and summer.

By Katie Hageman On the second Saturday of each month, the Valmonte Garden is open to the public from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Visitors have the opportunity to roam the garden looking at everything from the various vegetables to chickens in their coops.

In May, the garden visit date fell on the Saturday before Mother’s Day. The garden offered a $10 deal in which guests could make a succulent basket in the garden to take home and give to their mothers the following day.

Depending on the time of year, different goods are available to the public for purchase. Potted plants, seasonal vegetables, fresh eggs, jams, and honey are among the most popular items.

The Valmonte Garden does more than supply goods for the general public. The gardeners here are responsible for growing food, particularly vegetables, for Chez Melange restaurant in Redondo Beach through the Seed to Plate partnership.

The garden was started in 2001 by Lynn Busia, a former special education administrator, and Robert Bell, co-owner and chef at Chez Melange. In

PEN Freshman Reflects On First Published Story Profile

• Student becomes published author after first literary submission.

By Sarah Liu Peninsula High School freshman Drew Shinozaki can now call herself a published author. In a recent issue of the literary magazine, Exposition Review, Shinozaki’s fictional short story “Numbers,” was printed.

The story is about a young girl named Nova whose father serves in the army. The piece explores how one copes with the long absence of a family member.

Stories submitted for that issue of the magazine had to follow the theme of “Orbit,” which was influenced by pieces of Shinozaki’s life.

Through a discussion in English class about the relationships between parents and children, she thought about her own family.

Her father’s job requires long com-

mutes to Hawaii, leading to his absences from home. Based on her life experience, she placed her emotions into a similar experience: a girl, Nova, who must deal with the absence of her father, but for an even more extended period of time.

“For me, an orbit was more of a cycle where things seem to follow a certain aligned pathway,” Shinozaki explained.

“This is represented by her father leaving and how she lives her life. When her father returns, it’s as if something has disrupted this orbit and this pattern, and shows how her life is affected so much by this one person, Shinozaki said.

Not only is “Numbers” Shinozaki’s debut as an author, it was her first piece submitted to a literary magazine. It was through an organization, Write Girl, that she was introduced to the magazine when the editors visited the group.

The story was written the night before a Write Girl workshop in preparation for the magazine editors’ visit and

took approximately half an hour to write and edit.

The submission process was out of Shinozaki’s comfort zone and stressful, but once the piece was submitted, she said she forgot about it for a little bit.

After a month of waiting, Shinozaki received a response from Exposition, and while she was prepared for rejection, she was pleasantly surprised and taken aback by the positive response and the acceptance.

There was a publication party later at Skylight Books, a bookstore in Los Angeles, where Shinozaki was invited to read her work to her fellow published writers.

“It was a little nerve-wracking,” she said, “because you’re among so many amazingly talented people whose work is absolutely brilliant, but it’s also an entirely beautiful feeling to be around people who share your passion and who are clearly supporting you each step of the way.”

Young Panthers Acting Up

Drama

• Young Panthers compete and win at Shakespeare Festival.

By Sarah Liu Peninsula High School freshmen had a successful run in the junior varsity division at the Drama Teacher Association of Southern California’s Shakespeare Festival held April 21.

Freshmen in the Large Group Dramatic placed second, and the Shakespeare the Musical group placing third.

Additionally, the Breeches group made it to the semifinals, and the Wizarding World of Shakespeare and Comedy scenes received honorable mentions.

The Large Group Dramatic group had to perform a scene from the play “Titus Andronicus.” For the Musical group, performers had to incorporate lyrics from various songs into the scene in acapella style.

None of the groups were allowed to wear costumes, only solid colored clothing, and use only folding chairs as props.

The Large Group Dramatic scene featured Chesca Genato, Macey

Caron, Zoe O’Neill, and Sophia Daniel and was directed by Lauryn Williams and Alexa Jones.

Shakespeare the Musical scene included Kylie Young, Kevin Riley, Tom Evans, Annelise Espinosa, and Quinn Sullivan, and was directed by Lauryn Williams, Alexa Jones and Sofia Molina.

All teams were helped by upperclassmen directors who had a better idea of what to expect at the competition, based on their prior experience during the Fall Drama Teacher Association competition.

“Upperclassmen were such a huge help,” said Daniel. “They had all been through DTASC before, so they prepared us in the best possible way. The seniors and the juniors all cheered us on and watched our scenes giving us tips on how we could improve.”

However, performers still ran into some difficulties, such as finding time to practice, as they all had busy schedules, and trying to keep their scenes under the time limit.

The practice times varied between each group. The Large Dramatic Group practiced twice a week for seven weeks

with added practices the week before the competition. For Shakespeare the Musical, the group practiced five days a week, then two weeks before the competition for two hours each.

As finalists, there were various reasons why the Peninsula students stood out from the other competitors.

For Sullivan, it was her group’s flow throughout the scenes.

“With all of our extra rehearsal time, our transitions came together to be smoother,” Sullivan said. It “definitely helped us work together. “ Upon finding out that they had placed, both groups were overjoyed, with some even crying out of happiness.

“I was so incredibly happy,” said Genato. “We worked so hard to get to that point. I really was so happy because I had so much faith in our scene, and we truly won in our hearts already… We gave it our all and nothing felt better but to know we did our best and poured our hearts into this, and it was even more incredible to find out we placed.”

PVIS ROV Program Ready To Compete

Running

• Palos Verdes Intermediate School sent two teams to the MATE Regional competition held at Long Beach City College on May 12th.

The Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Center coordinates an international student underwater robotics (remotely operated vehicle or ROV) competition and a network of 20 regional contests.

The 7th and 8th graders from PVIS competed in the Ranger division, the intermediate level of competition against other middle and high schoolers.

Valmonte Garden Blossoms For Spring/Summer Months . . . Continued from Page 3

2013 the garden was moved from Palos Verdes High School to its current location behind Valmonte School.

The goal of the partnership between the garden and the restaurant is to create an atmosphere where adult special needs students of the Palos Verdes Unified School District are able to actively contribute to the community.

The purpose of the vegetable garden is to teach these adult students, otherwise known as Transition to Independent students, skills such as teamwork and dedication to a task. These individuals are responsible for growing vegetables such as broccoli, carrots, potatoes, and tomatoes that are then used in dishes at Chez Melange.

Community members work in the garden Monday through Thursday mornings and on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. Nancy Lemargie is the current garden manager and is responsible for all of the job training.

The next Valmonte Garden visit day will be on June 9.

PVNet Continues To Lead Tech Learning Profile • PVNet provides easy access to technology not always found at school programs.

By Nina Li With today’s society focusing more and more on science, technology, engineering and math (the STEM subjects), students are becoming increasingly involved with programs that teach these STEM classes.

One of the most prominent places to learn about anything technological is Palos Verdes on the Net, also known as PVNet, which was founded by Ted Vegvari in 1995.

PVNet is a non-profit organization that provides not only students but community members unlimited access to technology that would be difficult to find elsewhere. With these advanced tools, students, interns and mentors collaborate to research and study numerous complicated projects.

Since PVNet opened, Vegvari estimates that more than 10,000 people have walked through its doors and left learning something new. PVNet is the most advanced center of its kind in the

country for middle and high school students. Their accredited STEM program has attracted hundreds of youth people who are interested in technology but do not have the accessibility in their home.

“I founded PVNet to fill the void that exists between current education and the professional industries,” Vegvari said. “PVNet provides access to technology that lets young people gain an understanding of what the world of careers looks like as far as interests. Our program customizes student interests into technological projects and reveals opportunities that may lead to their careers choices. It is important to create special things for people; we are not cookie cutters.”

Vegvari’s entrepreneur background included time in both STEM as well as the art fields. He has always been passionate about audio/visual design, music production and recording. Much of his interests can be seen woven into everything that he does.

His goal for PVNet is to provide the gear that students can use to see what attracts their attention and hopefully that interest will reveal a path for their future.

“You do not know what you are interested in until you get the chance to try many things,” Vegvari said. “If there is one toy in front of you, you are forced to use it but if you have 100 toys you can try them all and find which toy you like

PVNet Interns Learn And Spread Knowledge . . . Continued from Page 8 Rancho Palos Verdes City Hall, the intention was to assist the local government and the community at large, including senior citizens, with their computers as well as to create websites for hundreds of local businesses.

After moving to the Promenade on the Peninsula, PVNet began to focus on introducing technology to children of all ages. After outgrowing that space, PVNet has moved to a much larger space in the same mall. PVNet renovated the new space and is preparing for a grand opening to offer summer programs for all ages.

PVNet was founded to be a volunteer-based organization with the goal of providing students a safe haven to grow professionally and prepare for the working world.

Interns are assigned roles and duties and are learn to contribute operations necessary to serve the community as well as help newer interns and students with their projects.

Senior technology intern Chris Heidelberg has been interning at PVNet for four years and has participated in many interesting programs offered by PVNet. “I grew up on Catalina Island, and there is a limited amount of technology over there,” Heidelberg said. “I could barely use a computer when I come over to Palos Verdes, but no one there teaches you how to use them.

“I came in the 8th grade and I met a person who knew how to program, and I thought that it was really good that he could make games. I wanted to make games, too, so I started learning programing and game development.

It was really overwhelming at first, so I started looking for a place where I could get help and learn how to do this and found PVNet, where I began my internship, Heidelberg said.

He quickly acclimated to his surroundings and now knows how to fix and make computers, use EEG headsets and analyze the data, code Java, use solidworks, program in MATLAB, network computers and equipment, use highly sophisticated material, develop software and more.

One of the projects that he worked on was fingerprinting the brain by mapping it with an electroencephalogram (EEG) headset. This device collects data about a subject, which is analyzed by a custom application (whitten by Chris) to create a profile that identifies any individual based on their brain waves, as if

it were like a fingerprint.

“My goal has always been to create unique programs using emerging technology to allow students to expand their understanding of what their options are for jobs and careers that will materialize in the near future and provide career longevity.” Vegvari said.

“It is expected that 50 percent or more jobs will disappear In the next 15 years due to AI and robotics, so let’s introduce options and prepare these kids for jobs likely to continue. You can only do that by showing students that there are millions of choices, rather than the few which they hear about at school.”

Heidelberg is currently working with six other people combining artificial intelligence (AI), EEG brainwave data, AI machine learning and the Oculus Rift virtual reality system to determine if artificial intelligence can understand a person’s brain waves and alter their brain state into different emotions.

There are professionals who have Ph.D’s mentoring them along with psychologists who are providing their expertise as well. This project is gaining national attention and it is not the first time that PVNet is doing something on that level.

PVNet has received recognition from the U.S. House of Representatives, former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sen. Barbara Boxer and many more.

PVNet is a place where every resource they have is at an individual’s disposal. From 3D printers to laser cutters, virtual reality to brain mapping technology, PVNet offers equipment that a student might have never dreamed of using.

That is the heart of each intern and volunteers goal and the very essence of what PVNet is about.

“It is really great to actually be able to spread your knowledge,” Heidelberg said. “It is like you are contributing to society in a way. Before I came to PVNet I was not the best conversation guy, but talking to people who walk in asking about the program and teaching younger students really helped me actually further my ability to have conversations with people.”

Vegvari has selected Intern Heidelberg to represent PVNet at the NASA Edwards AFB in summer 2019 to work on the Prandtl-D 3C Subscale Glider, which will be deployed for the Mars 2020 mission.

Playoff Action Underway

. . . Continued from Page 13 On Tuesday, the Majors Red Sox battled the Giants, and, even though it was a six seed vs. a three seed, it looked like the two best teams on the Hill.

Michael Decker threw a no-hitter through the fourth inning, and the game was tied 0-0 through six innings.

Both teams had chances to score, but defense and pitching prevailed.

Finally, in the bottom of the seventh, Matt Davin of the Red Sox hit a hard ground ball to left field, which sent K.J. Theodora around third base to score the winning run. The Sox won 1-0.

In the second game, Jay Kakani and Charlie Wertz were throwing a combined perfect game through four innings. The Angels scored after a leadoff base hit in the fifth. In the bottom

of the inning, Nick Musgrave got the first hit of the game for the Pirates with a double. He stole third and reached home on an overthrow.

Things fell apart in the sixth for the Pirates’ defense. Multiple errors led to four Angels runs. The Angels won 5-1.

In Lunada Bay, the Cardinals beat the Braves in a close matchup. Both teams were pretty equal, but only one could win. The Cardinals took it, 3-2.

Angels Begin Playoffs As Top Seed

• Playoffs begin next week after the three-day weekend.

The Angels finished the regular season in first place, getting a few more ties than losses to stay ahead of the Rockies. Both teams finished the regular season with 13 wins.

First the first time in a long time, there were no home runs hit at George Allen Field during the regular season.

Girls Lacrosse Taking Over Middle School Stick • All three Peninsula middle schools have enough players to field multiple teams and compete in various tournaments.

Miraleste, Ridgecrest and Palos Verdes intermedaite schools as well as Manhattan Beach Middle School and Chadwick have been competing in girls’ lacrosse for the last month.

Interest in lacrosse has grown quickly with middle school girls, and it has become a very popular sport to play. This season all thee middle schools hosted games.

PVIS will end the season at Chadwick on June 1.
