Scouts Open Spring With Pancake Breakfast

• Peninsula Scout troops took to the grill last weekend for the annual pancake breakfast at Ernie Howlett Park.

Pancakes, eggs, sausage, coffee, juice and milk were served to hundreds of hungry diners to benefit local scouting activities.

As per tradition, Rolling Hills Estates City Council members and the Mayor arrived on horseback, while Silver Spur Little League players and coaches took in some great food in between games.

Sea Kings Take First Peninsula Student Is At State Science Fair Making A Difference Five Palos Verdes high science research students, under the direction of Julie Munoz, competed in the State Science Fair held at the California State Science Fair last week.

• Peninsula High School prides itself on making an impact on the community and touching the lives of others.

By Tyler Patterson Many students at the school are dedicated to helping out less fortunate people and doing anything they can to improve lives.

Cher Su, a junior at the school, is one such person who spends a lot of her time volunteering and doing community service.

During her years at high school, Su has done a lot to help younger kids in the community. She founded a club called Mount Olive Mentors which involves high school students tutoring elementary school children.

Additionally, she is very involved in organizing the annual Ridgecrest 5k run and assembles a team of 15 or so volunteers to help in the event.

As a co-president of National Honor Society of Dance Arts, Su has arranged events in which high school students

For Su, her volunteering has taught her much about life and other people.

“The events I participate in are incredibly eye-opening and have shown me the power of true acts of kindness and helping the community thrive,” says Su. Su was recently appointed Vice President of National Honors Society at Peninsula and she looks forward to not only get the society more involved in the community, but also give the same opportunity to help others to high school students.

Along with the enjoyment she gets from helping others, she loves meeting new people. “I have really connected and gotten to know people, and we got to communicate with the hospital children after we performed,” said Su. Su says she loves talking with people and interacting with the foster children she meets and is interested in hearing about their hobbies and lives.

Through most of her life, volunteering has been an integral part of Su’s life, and she definitely does not plan on giving up her passion any time soon.

“I think volunteering is the first step in finding my future career, and it is an activity that makes you and others feel good,” said Su Although Su does not know what she wants to do in the future exactly, she knows it will revolve around helping others.

Sea Kings Reach Championship Match

Boys Lacrosse

• The Sea Kings reached the Southern Section Championship game against Orange County’s St. Mary’s before losing, 14-8, at Mira Costa High.

Palos Verdes played tough against the Tartans (21-3) in the first-half. which was and finish tied at the break 7-7.

St. Mary’s ultimately wore down the Sea Kings defense and broke open the game with a 6-0 fourth-quarter scoring edge to claim its second U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section title in three years.

To reach the championship game, PV got a 6-0 second-quarter scoring burst to win its second consecutive U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section North championship with a 12-7 win over No. 7 seed Crespi.

the season undefeated with a 8-5 victory over the Santa Monica Dragons. The Factory’s defense was led by defensemen Justin Booth, Brandon Clark and keeper Joey Quinn, who made some great saves. Clark took control of the face-off in the 2nd half to ignite the team. Attackman Brad Sharp and Birk Swan combined for six goals and Jacob Huddleston and Jake Jellison also added a goal each.

Joey Quinn was named Goalie MVP, Brad Sharp was name Offensive MVP and Brandon Clark was named Defensive MVP. — email reports.

Lacrosse team caught an outlet pass from goalie Kyle McCann and took it coast to coast for the game winner with 45 seconds left in the championship match against the Santa Monica Dragons. The Dragons dominated the face-off and possession all day, but Kaiser Fry kept Factory in the game with tough aggressive takes from his attackman spot where he finished with six goals on the day.

Kyle Kirkpatrick and Noah Rowe each notched a goal. Kyle McCann was named goalie MVP, Kaiser Fry was named offensive MVP and Neil Randall was named Defensive MVP. — email reports.

PVIS Students Win Eassy Contest

• Palos Verdes Intermedaite school 8th Grade Language Arts students submitted essays for the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Essay Contes and took 1st and 2nd place.

• 1st Place Winner - David Hindman - Olympus Moons. Award amount: $500 • 2nd Place Winners - Olivia Bradley - A Ganymede Space Tourist and Marianne Schiappa - Space Tourism: Witnessing the Wonders of Saturn’s Sixth Largest Moon. Olivia and Marianne both receive $150. All three winners get to attend next week’s AIAA Awards Dinner with their parents.

Panther JV Team Sweeps Sea Kings JV Baseball • The Peninsula JV team got two one-run wins over the Sea Kings for a series sweep.

The teams of Peninsula and Palos Verdes high schools faced off in a twogame series.

Peninsula took the opener, 5-4, at Palos Verdes in a very competitive battle.

Freshman Michael Fuhrman drove in two runs on a double in the third inning to give Peninsula into the lead.

Palos Verdes quickly tied things up in the fifth inning on a passed ball, which left the score a 4-4 tie.

Alex Bobb doubled in the top of the seventh scoring Marco Merola for the Peninsula win. The following day the Panthers got a 1-0 win at home for the two-game sweep over the Sea Kings.

Sea Kings Take Two From Panthers

Varsity Baseball • The Palos Verdes and Peninsula play back-to-back games with the Sea Kings getting the two wins.

By Matthew Gilbertson With the regular season coming to an end, it only seems fitting that the Sea Kings’ and the Panthers’ varsity baseball teams squared off for the final two games of the season with playoff spots up for grabs.

Both teams entered their final matchups with 5-3 records in Bay League, and the rivalry matchup was set to determine each team’s fate.

The two-game series opened at Peninsula High School. Juniors Alec Abdalah (Palos Verdes) and Kenneth Haus (Peninsula) took the mound to help seek the victory for their respective teams.

Despite an impressive outing by Haus, who held the Sea Kings without a hit for five innings, Palos Verdes took an early lead due to several Peninsula errors.

The Panthers were able to tie the game in the 4th inning, as Zach Phillips drove in the Panthers’ first run with a double to deep center field.

Abdalah, replaced in the fifth inning, had a strong performance for the Sea Kings, allowing just one unearned run through four innings.

strong all season, and junior Kyle McElroy received the ball in the 5th inning and kept the score locked at one run apiece.

Senior Tanner Tellenbach came up with the decisive hit, driving in two runs to give the Sea Kings a 3-1 lead.

The Panthers responded and cut the Sea King lead to one after a sacrifice fly by Zach Phillips, but were unable to even the score as junior Sander Alley, replacing McElroy, was able to work his way out of the inning.

Palos Verdes added another run in the top of the 7th, as senior Kyle Fujisaki drove in James Latimer with a double. Alley was sent back out to the mound in pursuit of his sixth save of the season, and the Sea Kings held onto a 4-2 lead to earn the victory.

The rivalry matchup was renewed just one day later, as the Sea Kings looked to claim a playoff spot with a victory.

On Senior Day at Palos Verdes, senior Erik Gutierrez received the ball for the Sea Kings looking for his sixth win of the season.

Senior Josh Weisinger got the start for the Panthers as they aimed to match Palos Verdes’ 6-3 league record.

Palos Verdes senior Tyler Rosen set the Palos Verdes offense in motion, hitting a solo home run in the first inning. The Sea Kings exploded for six runs in the second inning on their way to scoring 13 runs.

Seniors Come Through . . .

Long-time PVP-Youth Sports News/ PANORAMA sports hero Tanner Tellenbach hits the game-winning RBI double against the Panthers and is celebrated by his teammates.

Tellenbach added two RBIs with three doubles, and Fujisaki also drove in a pair of runs. After the 13-1 victory, the Sea Kings look to make a deep run in the playoffs with the ultimate goal being to win a CIF championship.

As many seniors will depart after the 2015 season, both the Panthers and Sea Kings will be able to fill these roles with the return of several notable players.

The Sea King pitching staff of Ab-

dalah, Alley and McElroy will not only play a decisive role in this years’ playoff run, but will also create a formidable rotation next season. Latimer and Adam Fogel will also return as valuable members of the offense Haus will provide both pitching and offense for the Panthers next year, and current sophomores Jordan Greenway and A.J. Hollis will return to their starting positions next season.

These two respected programs will ensure that the rivalry on the Hill remains for years to come.

New Season Begins With Playoff Action Little League • All four Peninsula Little Leagues are in the middle of playoff competition with closing day and championship games scheduled for next week.

Anything can and will happen during the playoffs, so every team needs to be prepared.

Palos Verde Little League’s Chandler Hazlett finished the regular season with 9 home runs, with Luc Balcom and Nick Lee getting seven each. It’s been a few seasons since Lunada By Little League has a had home run hitter like Corbin Kunich, who finished the regular season with five.

Silver Spurs’ Mateo Ponica came on strong the last month and finished with five home runs, while Joe Lach and Bryce Hiraoka have three each.

Challenger Kids Take On Baseball Challenger League

• The Challenger League is in its final inning of action with the final game on May 30 at Lunada Bay Little League. The action has been fast and furious for Challenger Kids and their Buddies this season. Most players are veterans of the league and had no difficulties leading their Buddies through the fun long season. Players will take a brief summer break and then will return for football action this fall.
