Peninsula 8th Graders Invade Disneyland Field Trip

On Saturday, April 22nd, Palos Verdes Intermediate, Ridgecrest, and Miraleste eight graders took a trip to the happiest place on earth for a day.

The Disneyland trip began early in the morning and ended late in the evening around 7:45 PM. Students of the Palos Verdes School District received an all-day pass to go on any rides they wanted.

The theme park got a visit from the famous Youtuber Lele Pons the same day.

“I think the eighth graders taking a trip to Disneyland is wonderful. Our school has been doing it for a long time now. The kids enjoyed it very much.

They have earned that fun journey to Disneyland for graduating and moving on to high school!” said the Palos Verdes Intermediate School Principal Frank Califano.

ing, thrilling, and breath-taking adventure. Junior High students on the Hill should definitely keep up their grades and good behavior in eighth grade to enjoy all of the fun adventures.

Coach Leads PEN To 9 Bay League Titles Profile • Peinsula High swim program dominates the South Bay with nine straight Bay League championships.

By Nina Li Since 2009, Peninsula’s swim teams have won consecutive Bay League championships in both the boys’ and girls’ programs.

Coach Brian Helmrich has coached the Varsity swim team for nine years and has been with them for seven Bay League titles. His first year of coaching was at North High School in Torrance, until a job opened up at Peninsula. He became a full-time physical education (PE) teacher, a head coach for swimming, the surf team coach and the girls’ water polo coach.

“It is pretty hectic teaching four different activities,” Helmrich said. “Surfing pretty much runs through the entire year, so they overlap with boys’ and girls’ swimming and water polo. It gets crazy, but I learned to balance it out.”

seven, until he was 16 and joined local swim teams on the East Coast. When he got to college, he swam Master’s programs during his time at the school. His goal this season, as with every season, is to help swimmers achieve their best and have fun at the same time.

“I think Coach Helmrich is an amazing person,” varsity swimmer Emily Wang said. “The whole swim team is like one big family, and the coach always make sure we try our hardest to be the best swimmers we can be. Pen swimming would not be the same

without him.”

The swimmers train for the whole year starting with regular PE swim at the beginning of the year. About 50 percent of the team members do not participate in PE swim, since they have their own club swim where they they do on their own training, such as ZAP. However, when season starts in the spring, tryouts are held to determine if the swimmer is qualified for varsity or frosh/soph. During the season, they practice from 2:00 to 4:30. In that time, they usually swim between 3,000 to 6,000 yards, depending on where they are in the season, which can be pretty

intense. Helmrich varies the days, with conditioning days and stroke development days.

“Helmrich is a fun guy, and we can always joke around with him,” said varsity swimmer Ariel Matsumiya. “Even though he seems very laid back and carefree, he really cares about everyone on the team and wants us all to do our best.”

Since the new Jackie Pringle pool was installed, many swimmers come specifically to Peninsula to participate in the swim team. About 115 students are on the team and many of them are water polo players who after season, transition onto the swim team.

“Fifty percent of the team is made up of those who just swim during their high school career,” Helmrich said.

“These kids are intermediate with not as much competitive experience, but with all the hard work they put in during season, you really see all of their times drop and they get faster. So by putting those two together, I think that is how our program is so successful in Bay League.”

RHE Keeps Up Tradition Pancakes

• Rolling Hills Estates celebrates the 60th annual Mayor’s Breakfast Ride with Peninsula Scouts’ pancake breakfast.

Keep The Horse Trails Open . . . Rolling Hills Estates City Council members arrive at the Scouts’ annual pancake breakfast by horse and buggy.

The mayor of Rolling Hills Estates, in a buggy pulled by two white horses, and City Council members, on horseback, arrived at Ernie Howlett Park at 8:30 in the morning on May 6 for the annual Mayor’s Breakfast Ride.

The breakfast, prepared and served by local boy and girl Scout troops, has been a tradition on the Hill for more than 60 years, and it is still going strong as indicated by the big number of young and old residents who attended.

“Ever since I got elected as mayor in 2003, I have continued coming to this event,” Mayor Frank Zerunyan said.

“The unique tradition of horseback makes this event such a classic, and the breakfast always brings the community into this big family.”

The event could not have been successful without the Scouts program on the Hill. Palos Verdes and Rolling Hills Estates have one of the largest Boy Scout and Girl Scout programs in the state, with each troop having more than a thousand Scouts serving the community. The Scouts served a full course breakfast to a waiting line of people that stretched around the parking lot.

Math Students Earn Trophies

Math Field Day

• Local students competed at the annual Los Angeles County Math Field Day recently.

Students from 4th to 8th grades in of Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District participated in the annual Math Field Day Competition at Azusa Pacific University recently.

Students in grades 5, 6, 7 and 8 earned trophies in competition with teams from all over Southern California.

The 5th grade team won one gold and two silvers. The 6th grade team won two golds and one bronze. 7th graders recieved one gold and two silvers and the 8th grade team won one gold and a silver.

• The annual Ridgecrest 5K Run continues to attract runners from all over the Peninsula and South Bay. Runners were up early Sunday morning on April 30 to particpate in the annual school fundraiser race.

Participates, mostly students from Ridgecrest Intermediate school, race around the Peninsula business district.

The 5K course challenged runners with long uphill grades on Silver Spur Road and a steep downhill portion on Crenshaw Blvd.

Ridgecrest student Aaron Wakefield-Carl was the first runner to finish the race, with fellow Raider Cody Hashimoto second and Ethan Quan, third.

Roya Khaleeli was the first girl to cross the finish line with Madison Woodward and Makenna Leung right behind her.

Just Another Morning Run . . .

Ridgecrest student Roya Khaleeli was the first girl to cross the finish line with a time of 23:12.

Make Way For The Raiders . . . The more than 700 runners competed in the annual race that took over the streets in the Peninsula business district early Sunday morning.

PV Assembly Holds Annual Ball Presentation • It starts with middle school Cotillion and ends with Peninsula seniors being honored at the Palos Verdes Assembly Presentation Ball.

By Katie Hageman A popular location for social gatherings as well as Hollywood backdrops, the Millennium Biltmore Hotel was the location of the Palos Verdes Assembly Presentation Ball on May 6th.

The Presentation Ball is held at the same location each year, with the goal of honoring the seniors who have been involved with the ballroom dancing organization since the sixth grade.

In sixth grade, students have the opportunity to join Cotillion, a monthly

dance in which instructors teach proper manners and lead the students in dance steps.

Bobby Burgess is the lead instructor of the Palos Verdes Cotillion and Assembly program and has worked with the organization for more than 60 years.

His son, Robert Burgess, has been involved in the program for roughly 20 years. Both of these men feel privileged to have worked with Palos Verdes students over the years and deeply enjoy sharing their knowledge of ballroom dancing with the students in the community.

Once entering high school, students may apply to join Assembly. The requirements for applying include participation in all three years of middle school Cotillion, with good attendance

and positive attitude along with compliance with the dress code.

Once students are accepted into the high school program, they continue to learn proper etiquette and progress with their ballroom dancing techniques.

At the end of four more years of dancing, the Presentation Ball is an extravagant night put together to honor these seniors. Everyone gets glammed up, with the honored young men wearing formal attire with a tailcoat, while the honored young women wear full white dresses. The formal attire added to the location of the Biltmore Hotel creates a stunning atmosphere.

There is one added aspect of Assembly not seen in Cotillion. This is community service.

Students volunteer at various events within the community each year and submit their hours to some of the patronesses of Assembly. Students have the option to simply submit their hours for only Assembly or to include them in their hours going toward the Presidential Service Award, which can be done because Assembly is a certified organization for the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

Everyone receives a service medallion at their senior ball if they have completed at least 80 hours of community service throughout their high school years.

This year, at the ball, it was announced that the seniors completed a combined total of more than 10,000 hours throughout the four years they were enrolled in Assembly. Given that the senior Assembly class was made up of 41 students, 10,000 hours is an incredibly honorable achievement.

These 41 students were all introduced individually at the Presentation Ball.

The presentees were split into four different introduction groups, two made up of women and two made up of men. The students entered onto the balconies, above all of their friends and family who were seated on the floor below, and curtsied or bowed.

PV Ends Season As Bay League Champs Girls Lacrosse • The Palos Verdes High girls’ lacrosse team had a memorable season by beating Redondo and winning the Bay League championship.

By Jenna McFarland Palos Verdes High’s girls lacrosse team has had an amazing season, most recently taking home the Bay League Championship.

This title is a big deal because it’s the first Bay League Championship for the lacrosse team since 2012.

Two big wins helped solidify the number one spot for the girls, winning against Peninsula High School with a score of 14-6,

as well as beating Mira Costa, 21-13.

The success of the team can be credited to talented players and their supportive coach.

Although lacrosse is not the biggest sport on the West Coast, that is one of the very reasons why junior Zoe Puccia loves it.

Says Puccia, “Because not a ton of people play lacrosse and our team isn’t that big, our team is very close knit and feels like family.” This chemistry between the play-

ers on and off the field, along with a great coaching staff, is what has made this already great team become champions.”

Every great coach understands the game and the players, and, according to Puccia, the coach of girls lacrosse at PV does just that.

“Our coach really understood her players, and she put us all in different positions, which we adapted to really well and began to thrive in,” Puccia said.

This visionary mindset of the coach helped to put the players in the best positions possible for each individual talent, resulting in a team playing in positions that allow them to achieve their potentials.

The tight-knit nature of the team, along with an excellent coach, has made PV girls Lacrosse a force to be reckoned with, which is best illustrated by the Bay League title this season.

Although Redondo Union High typically leaves the season as Bay League champions, this year the tides have turned, and PV has emerged on top.

Although great accomplishments have already been achieved, the team does not plan to stop with the Bay League title.

They’ve already starting making a name for themselves in CIF, winning their first round, and next year they are predicted to have an even better season.

Says Puccia, “We’re going to go all the way to the finals next year because we’ve been improving all year and we’re only are going to be better next year.”

Frasso Leaves Legacy On PEN High Sports

• First-Team Bay League basketball player is now leading the Panthers to first place in baseball.

By Nina Li Every year, Peninsula High School graduates hundreds of senior athletes who have left a lasting legacy in their footsteps. Nick Frasso and his family members have made an impact on many sports, with prominent recognition in baseball and basketball.

Frasso, after 12 years of playing both basketball and baseball, cultivated his own legacy through many titles, such as SoCal Prep Legends Boys Athlete of the Week for his exceptional work on the varsity teams.

Varsity baseball coach Brian Bowles has been a coach for five years, and this year marks his first year as head coach.

He has known Frasso since he was a freshman through baseball and has really gotten to know him.

“Nick is a leader by action, and he plays the game relaxed so when others tense up he remains care free and allows his ability to come to the forefront,” Bowles said.

“He does not over-think or press when competing, instead he trusts his ability and stays in the moment, the coach said.

During baseball season, the goal for team members is to maintain the physical condition they gained in the off-season. They do one bullpen session a week to stay tuned up and complete arm exercises and conditioning workouts.

During off-season, they spend their time weightlifting to gain greater strength and power. Players also do fewer bullpen sessions, but do more long tosses to build arm strength for the following year as well as work on skill development and rooting out bad habits.

“I think he (Frasso) has as high a ceiling as anyone I have ever coached at Peninsula,” Bowles said. “He is a late bloomer and is still figuring out his pitching delivery, but if he commits to the weight room, conditioning, mental prep and continues to work on his delivery, he [will continue to get better].

Nick has been a key player on our team who has contributed as a hitter and a pitcher,” the coach said.

However, before baseball season, Frasso plays on the varsity basketball team. He led the Panthers to CIF Southern Section Division 1A semifinals under Ryan Quinlan’s coaching.

In basketball season, the team trains intensely, proving how their hard work paid off in their winning season.

“Frasso kept the team mood really light and positive during practices and games,” said teammate Blake Godbold.

Playoff Season At The Plate Little League

• The final battles are set before the Major, Intermediate and Minors Divisions begin playoff action at all four Little Leagues.

The Silver Spur Cardinals and the Lunada Bay Giants, both from the Minors Divisions, are the only teams on the Peninsula without a loss.

Big hitters from Silver Spur and Lunada Bay Little Leagues got their names on the Peninsula home run list while, Niall Collins from Palos Verdes Little League leads the Hill with 12 home runs.

As Frasso graduates this year, his family name will not disappear from Peninsula quite yet. Freshman Luke Frasso will continue to carry on the Frasso in basketball season, on varsity, like his brother.

“Just playing and having fun is what encouraged me to participate in these sports,” Nick Frasso said. “I think a big accomplishment is to be able to play varsity in both basketball and baseball, and my favorite part of being on these teams is competing in general with my friends.”

as the individual students came into the center of the room. Once the bio was read, the student gave a bundle of roses to his or her mother, along with a single rose to his/her grandmother, if she was present. The presentees were then escorted out of the ballroom.

After all of the students in the group of presentees were recognized, each senior came back onto the dance floor with their mother or their father.

The parents of the students placed the service medallion around their son/ daughter’s neck and proceeded to dance the waltz with their child.

After all 41 seniors had been recognized, dinner was served.

The meal consisted of soup, salad, beef and fish, and dessert. Everyone socialized with others at their table as they ate, and, once the food was gone,

At the benches, the adults have conversations about the past AYSO soccer game while their children play tag on the field.

On their way out, the residents shake hands with the City Council members and thank them for their work on the beautiful place they live in. This very local event can really warm someone’s heart and can be a place they can call home.

“This was my very first time riding a horse along with the other council members, and it has given me a newfound appreciation to this equestrian culture here,” State Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi said. “I love this event and the vibe it brings to the community, and I appreciate the City Council for this opportunity to serve this beautiful city.”

The Palos Verdes Assembly was founded on the principles of elegance, grace, manners, and community service. Since 1964, Assembly students have accomplished all of those things.

This 2017 Presentation Ball was the night to honor the 2016-2017 seniors who have upheld the ideals of Cotillion and Assembly for their past seven years.

Towards the end of the season, they taper off the dryland work and focus more on swimming technique and racing strategy.

“My favorite part about being on the swim team is forming these unforgettable friendships with other swimmers and the coaches,” varsity swimmer Wang said. “To share the opportunity to compete for our school with this amazing team is truly a dream come true!”

Peninsula graduated many fast swimmers last year and is vying to win another Bay League Championship,

which will not be very easy. Redondo and Mira Costa are the main competitors against Peninsula and they have very well-rounded teams.

According to coach Helmrich, we have a possible shot at Bay League, but with a swim meet, anything can happen, a relay could get disqualified or someone could get hurt.

“I love the swimmers and have a lot of fun with them,” Helmrich said.

“There are many stresses that come along with being a coach, like balancing my schedule, paperwork and organizing the logistics in the program, but when it comes down to what I really enjoy is just the satisfaction of helping a swimmer reach their personal record and getting faster, knowing that you helped them achieve that.”

PEF Holds Major Fundraiser Tonight • The Peninsula Education Foundation’s 35th annual Main Event fundraiser will be held today at Terranea Resort.

Guests will feel like they’ve been whisked off to the coast of Spain to enjoy the island of Ibiza. The vibrant and artsy vibe is generating excitement for this year’s event to raise funds for all 17 public schools in the Palos Verdes Unified School District. Highlight of the evening will be a student musical dance, and robotics performances to showcase the people the Peninsula Education Foundation (PEF) supports.

Guests will be able to take part in the silent and live auctions, which include a spectacular array of collectible wines, travel experiences, concert tickets and a chance to win a Lexus RX 450h or a year of dining at Terranea’s Catalina Kitchen.

“We are so excited to feature our own PV parent and Grammy Award nominee music producer starRo, who will be performing the musical entertainment and getting the dance party started for the evening.

All of the ethereal visuals for the night as well as the uber talented student musical and dance performances are sure to ignite the senses,” says event co-chairs Julia Whitley and Michael Larson of SEJ Event Productions.

“PEF is grateful for the design, vision and execution of PVPUSD alum Julia Whitley who receives rave reviews for events by her’s and Larson’s SEJ Event Productions.

The highlight of the evening will be the live auction with packages including an exclusive family resort membership to Terranea Resort, a Maserati Quattroporte for a weekend paired with a private Strand House wine dinner and Beach House hotel stay, Ed Sheeran concert tickets with seating for 6 in a Staples Center luxury suite, an exotic vacation via private Advanced Air flight, private dinner for 16 at the newly renovated Rolling Hills Country Club, membership to the Portuguese Bend Beach Club and more.

PV Speed Time Together Comes to an End

Team Soccer

With the AYSO National mandated change to birth year for age groupings set to take effect this fall, things are changing throughout the AYSO soccer landscape.

While there will be an adjustment period for families to acclimate to the change, the joy of the game will undoubtedly continue for all children that play the sport.

For now, many teams that have long played together are concluding their time together as the change will send players in different directions.

In Palos Verdes, one such team, PV Speed, has wrapped up in style. The team formed during the 2015 season with a handful of players from that original team still together.

In their most recent and final tournament together, they left the field champions.

One last hurrah, one final great memory. There is no doubt there are other teams in Palos Verdes and across the country that are similarly trying their best to end on a high note. If PV Speed is any indication, the memories of their teammates, the wins, the loss-
