Miraleste Student Expert With A Sword

When fencer Maverick Doherty steps on the field of play, others pay attention.

“They’ll say, ‘You’re Maverick? What’s that?” she explains.

The 13-year-old Miraleste Intermediate student is quick to demonstrate just what Maverick is – a fierce young competitor reaching for top of her game.

On April 20, Maverick earned her third gold medal – her second individual – at the USA Fencing Association’s North American Cup tournament, thereby earning fencing’s highest rating, typically realized by competitors older than her. She is the youngest A-rated fencer in the nation, and one of only a handful in On Guard . . . Fresh from her gold medal win, Maverick is back at the club preparing for this summer’s USA Fencing National Championships. Her goals are to win the Y14 age group, make Top 8 in Cadet Division (17 and younger) and Top 32 in Junior (20 and younger). She also wants to earn senior points.

“Nationals will be exciting, but next year she’ll be competing against fencers on the world teams,” D’Asaro said.

Next season Maverick will travel internationally to compete in Cadet and Junior World Cups, taking on a tougher field of competitors to earn these points, which are necessary if she hopes to reach the nation’s Top 4. If she rises to the Top 4, she can qualify for the Olympics.

“I’d definitely like a shot at the Olympic team,” she said.

“If she keeps working hard, stays injury-free, and keeps the grades up, she’s got a long future [in fencing],” her coach added.

Right now Maverick is nursing a hamstring injury she suffered last sea-

son. She tries to not overdo training and takes time to rest and stretch. If the hamstring starts to hurt, it’s time to ice and take a lot of ibuprofen.

“I’m pretty sure it’s fully healed now,” she said. “So I’ll be fine going into summer nationals.”

The eighth-grader heads to Peninsula High School this fall, and wants to start a fencing team there.

“It would be a cool team sport to have at the school and to represent the school in scholastic events,” she said.

She trains with other Panthers at D’Asaro’s club and said together they could easily start a team. She also plans to add four honors classes to her plate next fall, having set her mind on an Ivy League school after high school graduation.

Columbia, Harvard, and Princeton, after all, have great fencing teams.

Raiders Conquer New Course In Stride

RIS 5K Run

• The annual Ridgecrest 5K fundraiser run has turned into a bigtime Peninsula event with racers from all over the Hill and South Bay competing.

A new course around the Peninsula business district offered new challenges to runners, which included long uphill grades and a steep downhill on Crenshaw Blvd that tested everyone’s endurance.

8th grader Lucas Ding was the first Ridgecrest student to finish the race, with brothers Toby and RJ Wakefield-Carl right behind him.

Melody Nakagawa was the first girl runner to cross the finish line with Akane Ito right behind her.

School Spotlight Math Students Dominate at L.A. County Competition Mathematics

At the Los Angeles County Mathematics Field Day, students representing PVPUSD finished first place overall at every grade level. The 20 students were selected from the top scorers at the highly competitive District Math Field Days.

Panthers Get 1-0 Shutout Win Over Sea Kings Softball

• The first of two games went to Peninsula after Brooke Vines hit a first-inning home run against Sea King ace pitcher Steffi Best.

By Tyler Patterson The Peninsula High softball team hosted cross-town rival Sea Kings for the first of two Bay League games with the next game at PV on May 14.

Panthers senior Brooke Vines led off with a towering hit to center that carried the fence and gave Peninsula 1-0 lead.

The solo home run proved to be all junior pitcher Jessica Hay needed to pick up the win, allowing five hits with eight strikeouts.

Steffi Best pitched a strong game and is pictured close to hitting a home run in the last inning of the of the first of two PV/PEN softball game.

Vines has already committed to Tennessee for softball, but she has never stopped working hard on the field. She had to work extra hard this year because she missed last season to focus on travel softball.

This work ethic has made her an even better player than she was before, which is definitely saying something.

Vines, who has played on the team since freshman year, also has a freshman sister playing on the team.

I caught up with Brooke to ask her some questions about some of her softball experiences.

Q: Do you have any superstitions that you have to do before every game?

A: I don’t really believe in superstitions.

All I need to rely on is my talent and hard work to help me accomplish what I need to.

Q: What has it been like with your sister on the team with you?

A: Playing with my sister has its pros and cons. The pros would be that it’s nice to have someone to talk to when I’m struggling or to have someone who has my back.

However, the cons would definitely be that because we are sisters we do bicker and argue.

Q: Has it been difficult sitting out a year and then coming back the next?

A: It’s been difficult because I didn’t know a significant amount of the girls on the JV team and varsity team. However,

athletically and skill wise nothing changed because I still played travel ball.

Q: Why did you choose Tennessee over the rest of the schools?

A: I chose Tennessee because it’s far from California, the coaching staff is a married couple and they are super supportive of their girls, I loved the southern feel of Tennessee and the large amount of people there like in California. I knew many girls who were going to Tennessee, and Tennessee’s academics suit me well because it will be easy to get into medical school.

Q: Who is your favorite softball player who you look up to?

A: My favorite softball player would definitely be my aunt Jstone Barnes!

Q: What is the best part of your game and why?

A: The best part of my game is my offense because I’m a triple threat. I can bunt, slap, as well as swing away; my versatility keeps the defense on their toes.

Q: Who inspired you to play softball?

A: I really didn’t have an inspiration. I kind of just tried different sports and softball just stuck!

PV & PEN Rule High School Lacrosse

Boys Lacrosse

• The Sea Kings defend the home field and get a 13-7 win over Peninsula High as the schools split the rivaly series 1-1.

The Palos Verdes High boys lacrosse team avenged an earlier 5-4 defeat to Peninsula with the 13-7 victory.

Tied 5-5 at the half, the Sea Kings outscored Peninsula, 5-1, in the third quarter and gave up only two goals in the second half.

PV was led by Sophomore Austin Lowi’s five goals and junior Aidan Westley’s three as PV improved its record to 12-5.

Jake Nolls and Stanny Gilbertson each scored two goals, and Mikey Booth contributed one to close out the scoring for Palos Verdes Zack Lozzi was once again stellar at face offs, winning 15 of 19 to give the Sea Kings ample scoring chances.

Senior goalie David McCann saved 16 to keep the Panthers at bay.

Sea Kings Cruise To First Round Win

• Top-seed Palos Verdes dominates West Ranch and looks forward to a possible rematch with Peninsula.

Defending champion PV High kicked off the 2015 Lacrosse Southern Section L.A. tournament with an 18-4 home win against West Ranch Tuesday evening.

Balanced scoring from eight different players paced the Sea Kings, including hat

tricks from Jack Larkin, Rizal Smith, Jake Nolls and Aidan Westley.

Jarrett Jones and Josh Rowland each had two goals and Austin Lowi and Josh Park tallied one each to complete the scoring for the top seeded PV squad.

Goalies David McCann, Connor Jongeward and JJ Barry combined to make 10 saves, although strong defensive efforts from Jones, Graham Walker, Con-

nor Markley, Shane Sharp and Kyle McBride helped to limit many good looks for West Ranch.

With the victory, the Sea Kings advance to play number nine seed Newbury Park, with the winner moving on to the final four game today.

• Third-seed Peninsula dominates El Segundo to get a first-round win in the Lacrosse Southern L.A. County tournament.

Goals came from a variety of Panthers.

Kurt Landon, Jacob Hack, Lance Plonski and Emilio Nunziati were just some of the many scorers for Peninsula. Senior Colton Michel was shutout, but still had a fantastic game with three assists.

After the game, junior Nunziati was asked about the difference between the playoffs and the regular season.

“We approached this game the same as we would any other game,” said Nunziati. “We were confident in ourselves and were able to maintain the fundamentals that have helped us have such a successful season. Our coach prepared us well for this challenge, and we were able to make plays.”

The Peninsula student section, known as the Zoo, was extremely engaged in the game and gave the Panthers a notable home field advantage. The players were

all focused before the game as they knew that each playoff game has the potential to be their last.

The Panthers have their best team in the history of the program. They finished the year with only two losses and were crowned as Bay League Champions for the first time. In addition, Peninsula defeated co-Bay League champion Palos Verdes once this year, which is always an impressive feat.

Overall, the Panthers season has been extremely successful thus far, and they will look to continue this success in the upcoming rounds of the CIF Playoffs.

The Panthers will play the winner of the Mira Costa/Thousand Oaks match. The team has defeated the Mustangs twice this year, but has not faced Thousand Oaks.

By Jack Grimes After sharing the Bay League title with rival Palos Verdes, the Peninsula boys varsity lacrosse team continued its great season with an easy 13-1 victory over El Segundo in the first round of the CIF playoffs Tuesday at home.

Peninsula’s talented lineup overpowered the El Segundo Eagles throughout the game. Their offense proved to be unstoppable and their defense provided an unbreakable wall against the Eagles’ attack.

A variety of players on Peninsula contributed to the victory as it was definitely a team effort.

PanthersGirls Girls Get Big Win At PV Lacrosse • The Peninsula High varsity girls lacrosse team got a 15-12 win over Palos Verdes to even the rivalry series at one win each.

The Panthers avenged a previous overtime loss to the Sea Kings with the Bay League victory on the road.

The Panthers jumped out to a six goal lead in the first half and then held on as the Sea Kings got as close as two goals in the second half.

Peninsula junior goalie Reiko Kato had 18 saves, while senior Sherry Black had four goals and freshman Zoe Puccia also scored four goals to lead the Panthers offense.

Will Abele Leads Peninsula Swim Team

Swimming

• Peninsula High swim team sweeps Palos Verdes in tune-up for Bay League and CIF competition.

By Tyler Patterson The Panther swim team traveled to PV for their last meet before Bay League prelims and finals. Peninsula dominated the Sea Kings with the boys’ varsity team scoring a 119-51 win and varsity girls getting a 129- 41 victory over their Hill rivals.

Freshman Sienna Lucido had already qualified for CIF in the 500 yard (20 laps) freestyle in her first meet of the season, then set a personal best against PV as a warm-up for the Bay League peliminaries.

On the boys side, Will Abele shaved 6 seconds off of his CIF qualifying 500 freestyle time against the Sea Kings.

New CIF qualifying times for the Panthers were earned by Brooke Geske in the 50 yard freestyle and by Emily Chung in the 200 yard IM. If you follow swimming at all, you have probably heard of the name Will Abele. If

you go to Peninsula High School, you would probably recognize him as the kid who is always very friendly and upbeat. Whether you are familiar with Abele or not, he is making an enormous splash in the sport of swimming.

Abele, a junior, is always humble about his accomplishments, but his achievements speak loudly. Abele finished 34th in the 1650 freestyle at the 2014 Speedo Champions Series in December.

Sam Meyers, a junior varsity swimmer, says that “Will is not only a leader, but a friend. His excellence goes beyond the pool and reaches even people like me,” Meyers said.

“Will’s strokes are effortless and his dominance causes me to strive for greatness; I’m happy to call him a teammate and consider him a brother.”

I recently sat down with Will to find out some more about his interest in swimming.

Q: What do you do to mentally prepare before each meet/race?

A: I mentally stay positive, and know that I can rely on my training to help me swim fast at the meet. During practice, I train hard

Q: Do you have any superstitions?

A: Not really, but I always make sure I do a specific warmup before each race.

Q: How far do you want to go with swimming?

A: I hope to swim in college and eventually qualify for the Olympic Trials either in 2016 or 2020.

Q: Who is your favorite swimmer? Do you try to emulate anything from him?

A: I admire Olympic athlete Jason Lezak. I respect his training and his work ethic. I try to emulate his dedicated mentality at practice and meets.

Panthers Want CIF Championship . . . Junior Will Abele has led the Panthers swim team all year and is looking to help the team earn post-season honors.

Q: Throughout your swimming career, who has helped you the most?

A: My coaches have helped me the most.

They give me excruciating sets at practice

and expect a lot out of me at meets, but they have helped my teammates and me achieve our goals and understand delayed gratification.

Q: Have you wanted to swim your whole life? Have you played any other sports?

A: I have played many sports other than swimming, including baseball, soccer, football, and basketball, but my favorite by far is swimming. Also, I have been swimming constantly year-round on my club team since I was 7, so it’s been a large part of my life for the past 10 years. I also love lifeguarding, going to the beach, and swimming competitively in the ocean.

Q: When did you realize you had a special talent for swimming?

A: I realized I had a talent for swimming when I was about 10 years old and I qualified for and attended my first Junior Olympic meet. It was a blast, and I was hooked!

Hill Speed Demons Burn Up The Track

• Boys’ and girls’ teams split victories at the annual Palos Verdes vs.

By Duncan Reid In the most competitive PV-PEN meet in many years, Palos Verdes won the girls varsity competition while, Peninsula won the boys’ meet last Thursday at the Palos Verdes track.

The PV girls were led by 1-2-3 finishes in the 1600m, 400m and 800m events, with wins from Camille Hines (1600m), Morgan Irish (400m) and Jacquelyn Smith (800m).

Sophomore Sabrina Li took the 300m hurdles in 49.10, and PV finished the girls’ races with a 3200m win from senior Anna Pruter in her last home meet, and a 4x400m relay win for the last race of the day (Smith, Jessica Lazo, Hines, and Irish) that sealed the victory for the Sea Kings.

“We all wanted to finish our home season strong, with my fellow seniors Cassidy (Webber) and Anika (Jensen),” said Pruter.

“It was really fun to have the team competition be so close, and I knew our 4x400m relay would be incredible at the end of the meet.”

Peninsula’s sprinters were impressive, with junior Minami Otani taking the 100m hurdles and freshman Yinka Braimah winning the 100m (12.90).

Braimah was a double winner, also taking the long jump. The Sea Kings Alexis Colaruotolo won the triple jump. In the throwing events, Peninsula’s Audrey Pillsbury was a double winner in the shot put and discus.

Palos Verdes Girls Get The Win . . .

The Sea Kings’ girls dominated the distance events to take the win over Peninsula, while the Panthers did well in the field events to get a win in varsity boys’ competition.

On the boys side, the meet came down to the last event, the high jump, with PV needing at least a second place showing after PV’s 4x400m relay scored a victory a few minutes earlier. Instead, the Panthers’ trio of Jacob Fumes, Ozioma Ogele and Obinna Ogele went 1-2-3 to seal the Peninsula victory.

Sprinters Noah Korotzer and Brian Lew went 1-2 in both the 100m and 200m to pace the Peninsula boys. PV dominated the longer running events, with Jeremy Johnson and Rob Franklin going 1-2 in the 400m. Jake Cohen took the 1600m for PV, and Sea King senior Connor Henebry ran away from the field in the 3200m.

Colton Lindberg took the boys shot put for PV, while Peninsula’s Andrew Dizon won the discus throw. Obinna Ogele also won the triple jump for Peninsula.

One of the closest races of the day was in the 300m hurdles, where the Panthers’ Daniel Cervantes edged PV’s Armon Clayborn, 42.09 to 42.25.

Both teams look forward to the league finals and the CIF post-season.

Said PV Head Track and Field Coach Brian Shapiro, “It was great to have two exciting team battles that came down to the end of the meet. I am really proud of the kids’ improvement, both this year and throughout their high school careers.”

Pony League Gets Ready For New Season Pony League

• This is the last weekend of regular season games as playoffs offer hope and opportunity for all teams despite their regular season record.

In the playoffs last year, the last place Dodgers reached the championship game. It was an example how anything is possible during the playoffs.

This weekend the Rockies and Pirates will be battling for a higher seed while the last regular season game will be played next Thursday between the Giants and Rockies.

Hot-Shot Soccer Kids Take Over AYSO Peninsula • Peninsula soccer teams finished the Spring Select League season and also competed in the Founder’s Cup against teams from all over the South Bay And as per tradition, PV teams dominated the tournament and the league with first-place medallions and undefeated records.

Now the travel tournament season begins and AYSO Select/EXTRA teams will be on the hunt all through Southern California for more medallions and trophies to add to their already extensive collection.
