Los Serenos, RPV Host Local Event Whale Watch

• The Palos Verdes Peninsula shows off its spring colors and ocean breezes for “Whale of a Day.”

By Justin Kim The City of Rancho Palos Verdes and members of Los Serenos de Point Vicente joined to host the annual “Whale of a Day” festival celebrating the migration of the Pacific Gray Whale.

Families from all over the South Bay and Los Angeles area came to the Point Vicente Interpretive Center Saturday, April 27, to take part in the festivities celebrating the whales. Long lines awaited tour buses cruising the beautiful cliffs of Palos Verdes and hundreds of people constantly circled throughout the day enjoying the sights.

Annual "Whale of a Day" Attracts Big Crowds

Junior Docent at the Interpretive Center and Palos Verdes High senior Joy Lee worked one such booth to earn her required volunteer hours by educating kids and adults on the native plants and animals of Palos Verdes.

“Whale of the Day” is an opportunity for people in Palos Verdes or all over the community to get together and learn about native animals, wildlife, plants and everything about whales. And it’s an opportunity for people to come together and have fun,” Lee said.

What Lee finds especially inviting about the event is the many activities that are offered, including face-painting, puppet shows, educational tours and of course whale-watching.

From outside the local South Bay area, Carlos Penilla, the Cubmaster to Pack 375, led a group of young Scouts from St. Charles Borromeo school in North Hollywood to enjoy “Whale of the Day.” The group started by visiting the San Vicente Lighthouse, viewed all the exhibits at the Interpretive Center and visited a few booths and looked for whales.

PV Golf Club Has New Menu To Spice Up Your Appetite A Culinary Journey

By Alexis Ferguson Modern. Fresh. Flavorful. These three words perfectly describe Chef Garrett Yokoyama’s new menu at the Palos Verdes Golf Club (PVGC).

At the young age of seven or eight, Garrett would cook breakfast for his family but never envisioned himself to be a professional chef. As a local who grew up in Manhattan Beach, Garrett always wanted to move back close to home. He worked at Trump National Golf Club for five years and at Sherwood Country Club for nine years.

Garrett wanted to work in the South Bay where he is surrounded by friends and family. David Conforti, the general manager at PVGC reached out to Garrett, as they had worked together at Trump National Golf Club. Garrett saw a change that was needed at PVGC and was informed about the future plans of renovating the kitchen.

Garrett believes that being a chef is all about trial and error. He creates a dish in his head but when he executes the dish, it is not always as he had pictured. He makes many adjustments to the dish and often consults with his staff. He values the help of his staff’s opinions as they are the ones who are cooking and the restaurant is a team effort.

Garrett’s favorite ingredient to cook with is scallops. I am not a seafood person, but Garrett’s scallops had me devouring the dish. The scallops were buttery and tender, and they sat on a bed of creamy, rich carrot risotto.

I then tried his brussels sprouts. Garrett roasted the brussels sprouts in the oven and then quickly fried them to crisp them up. He tossed them with a sweet garlic sauce and bacon pieces, and then served them with a sprinkle of ricotta salata. The sweet and salty combination with the crispy brussels sprouts was outstanding. The balance was perfect and I honestly think I could eat two plates of those brussels sprouts alone.

The mahi mahi was tender and flavorful and paired so nicely with the fresh fruit salsa. The wild rice and spinach were a great complement to the fish and added so much flavor and color to the dish.

Capitol Convoy On The March To Sacramento . . . Last month, 30 students from Peninsula and Palos Verdes high schools and Rancho del Mar joined parents, administrators, teachers and a school member for the annual Capitol Convoy to Sacramento. The group of 67 participants advocated for Assembly Bill 39, authored by Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi. The bill would increase school funding for all schools in California which has one of the lowest levels of funding per pupil in the country. The group also met with Sen. Ben Allen during the two-day trip that included meetings with legislators and their staff. The PTSA funds and organizes this trip that provides a valuable learning experience and an opportunity to learn about state government while fostering civic engagement.

Los Hermanos Black Deliver Easter Baskets

The Los Hermanos Black 2021 group participated in the making of Easter baskets, which were delivered to the children at the Richstone Family Center.

The Richstone Family Center, located in Hawthorne, is committed to treating and preventing child abuse and trauma, educating families, and preventing violence in schools and communities.

The baskets were assembled with coloring books and candy and toys. They were dropped off at the Richstone Family Center, ready to be handed out to kids this Easter.

High School Athletes Prioritize Academics CIF Academics

• Peninsula and Palos Verdes high schools lead CIF Academic Awards.

By Nina Li Hundreds of athletes compete in the South Bay each year, not only going head-to-head physically, but also academically, with sports teams vying for CIF Southern Section Academic Awards.

The awards are given to teams with a minimum of five student-athletes who have maintained a GPA of 3.0 or above in the first semester of the school year.

Peninsula High School had five teams that maintained that average: boys’ soccer (GPA of 3.62), softball (GPA of 3.79), boys’ track and field (GPA of 3.64), traditional competitive cheer (GPA of 3.52)

and wrestling (GPA of 3.50, all winning first place in their categories.

At Palos Verdes High school, the baseball team placed first, with an overall GPA of 3.65, and the boys’ water polo team also placed first, with a GPA of 3.77.

With the academic rigor at these schools, it is difficult to maintain high grades when the days are filled with practices and games. However, all of these student-athletes have managed to keep their grades up while competing.

“In order to keep up and stay ahead in school, I really have to budget my time wisely,” said Peninsula senior varsity softball player Jasmine Nguyen.

“I have a schedule and calendar that I use, and it allows me to see all of my activities and events, making me plan a week or two ahead,” she said.

“I also spend my weekends wisely.

If I am busy, I know I have to get things

done beforehand, and if I have a weekend off, I use it to get ahead. I also try to stay organized, and whenever I have a little downtime, I try to knock out an assignment or two. As a student-athlete, I have to make time and get work done with every spare minute I can get.”

Practices are what take up most of an athletes’ time, since sports teams meet after school and practice until the evening. After practices, they are tired and worn out, yet still have to complete their homework and study for tests.

Time management is crucial for student-athletes, and if they fail to allocate sufficient time for their academics, they will inevitably fall behind.

“Prioritizing is key,” said Elijah Ding, senior and track and field member. “I like doing work before the meets so I do not have stay up late after a hard meet. For practice, it is about being on top of your

work at home and not getting distracted.

But you have to be able to keep healthy,” Ding said. “Getting caught up in work sometimes messes eating schedules and hydration habits, and I have to remind myself constantly. Because I have less time to study and do homework.’’

Despite their busy schedules, these athletes have found ways to balance their workloads. Due to their determination and time management, they have been able to accomplish great things, earning their CIF Academic Awards.

Ana Willoughby, Peninsula junior and Cheer team member, said, “Over the past few years that I have been on the Cheer team I have done my best to figure out the best way to balance maintaining my grades and being active on Cheer, and while sometimes it requires extra effort, it is always worth it to me.’’

• Palos Verdes High football continues to be recognized on and off the field.

For the fourth consecutive year, the Sea King Football Alumni presented the Mark Choate Memorial Scholarship to a graduating senior from the Palos Verdes football team.

This year’s recipient was Kona Abe, senior co-captain who will graduate this June. The award and its associated $10,000 scholarship was presented by the Football Alumni and funded with the support of the Mark Wade Choate III Foundation.

Mark Choate III was the captain and quarterback of the 1986 Sea Kings.

Prior recipients of the award have been some of the most decorated and recognized players in the South Bay during their senior season, including Shane Irwin, Justin Martz and Giorgio Henderson. All were captains and led the Sea Kings to Bay League championships.

Kona Abe also served as captain and led his team to a Bay League title (eighth consecutive for the Sea Kings), but his narrative was unfortunately unique as he suffered a season-ending ACL tear on the last play of the last spring practice and didn’t play in the fall season.

Dean Decker, president of Sea King Football Alumni, presented the award and commented on the selection of Abe: “Kona was slated to be a major contributor at QB, but instead faced the sudden reality that his days of playing football were over. Most would have turned to other interests, but not Kona. He made the decision to devote his time, effort and inspiration to contribute to the greater good and success of the team and program by assisting the coaches and serving as a player-voted team captain.” Decker added, “Kona was a devoted team leader and emblematic of the continued success of the Sea King program.”

Said Decker, “Coach Guy Gardner has fostered a strong and passionate team environment which inspires and breeds success. We were thrilled to recognize Kona as another one of the many deserving culture carriers the program has produced.”

Abe plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the fall. However, this spring, he is back on the playing field after an extensive rehabilitation for his knee injury. Abe is an infielder for the Sea King baseball team.

Sea King Lacrosse Stonger Than Ever

• The Palos Verdes High boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams are headed for post-season action.

By Sarah Liu As Palos Verdes High School spring sports come to a close, lacrosse is the sport to watch.

Both boys’ and girls’ varsity teams are still on a roll that began last season when they were ranked third and eighth in the state, respectively.

Last year, the boys’ varsity team was among the top teams in the nation and is looking even better than last year.

They finished the regular season Thursday with a big road win over traditional power Mira Costa to win the Bay League championship with a 5-0 record, 16-2 overall. As of April 24, they are ranked tenth in the nation.

As for the girls’ varsity, they are ranked 38th in the nation.

The reason for the difference between this season and last season is clear: “We have two new coaches this year, an offensive coordinator who is setting up plays and putting our offense in good positions with new plays,” said senior Kyle McCann.

“We expect to win the Los Angeles finals, and after that we will play the winner of the Orange County bracket, and, hopefully, win that too, said McCann.

The team hopes to make it far into playoffs, and, as Luc Charbonnier said, “Our team goal is to pretty much win everything and become state champs!”

Baseball In Final Drive To Playoffs Little League • There is a lot of baseball to be played on the Hill with many more weekends of ball before playoffs and post-season action.

The Silver Spur Minors Angels are the only team on the Peninsula that has yet to record a loss at 10-0-0.

Defense is the key with two first place teams. The PV Majors Cubs have allowed only 15 runs this season while the Rolling Hills Minors Angels have allowed only 33.

Sea Kings, Panthers Duel On The Track Track & Field

• Traditional dual meet provides excitement for track and field fans.

By Justin Kim Peninsula High hosted crosstown rival Palos Verdes High in Bay League track and field on Tuesday, April 16. The Sea Kings men and women varsity teams won, and the Panthers’ men and women frosh/soph teams won.

Peninsula junior Aiden Lieb won both the varsity 100 meters (11.25) and 200 meters (22.99). The 100 time was a personal best for Lieb. Palos Verdes senior Ryan Echeverria and Peninsula’s junior Josh Ling tied in a close second in 11.29.

Sea King senior Nathan Lanz also doubled, winning the varsity 800 (2:02), and the 3200 (10:07.7) Palos Verdes sophomores Ife Ibraheem and Tatiana Grimes placed first and second in the girl’s varsity 100 and 200 meter races. Ibraheem won the 100 in 12.40 with teammate Grimes second in 13.36. Ibraheem took the 200 in 26.29 and Grimes set a personal record of 28.29.

In the boy’s varsity 400 meter race, Palos Verdes senior Herbert Grageda won (54.61) and Peninsula junior Arturo Espinoza (55.06) took second, both PRs. In the girl’s varsity 400, Palos Verdes freshman Anna Terrell and PV juniors Samantha Steman and Savannah Scriven dominated the race, all three setting PRs. Terrell winning in 58.09, followed by Steman 1:05.02 and Scriven 1:05.68.

Palos Verdes girls’ and boys’ dominated all three spots in the 800 varsity meter races.

The Palos Verdes girls’ varsity 1600 meter runners also dominated, all five of their runners outlasting two of Peninsula’s.

In the boys’ varsity 1600 meter, Palos Verdes senior William Teets placed first, while Peninsula junior Ewan Macfarlane and senior Elijah Ding were second and third.

Peninsula senior Carlos Oceguda dominated the boys’ varsity shot put with a throw of 46.05. He also won the boys’ varsity discus with a throw of 122.10.

After the track meet, jumps team captain senior Isaac Hong, who leads Peninsula’s triple jump and long jump events, said, “I’m satisfied with the track meet since we were kinda the underdogs but mostly won against PV.” Peninsula lost

Palos Verdes High senior Will Teets easily took the 1600m and is prepared for Bay League and CIF competition. in the long jump but dominated all top three spots in the triple jump.

Panthers’ Annabella Christen, the hurdles senior captain, said, “The meet went smoothly, and it was great to see some friends from PV who also run track.

I run hurdles. It’s not the most popular event, but I felt like people were cheering for both teams. It was a great feeling.”

Christen went on to say, “I think that even though we lost to PV, most of us still had a pretty great time together. The senior ceremony was nice because both head coaches encouraged the two teams to all combine into one big team, which was really cool.”

The boy’s varsity 110 and 300 meter hurdle races were won by Palos Verdes sophomore Nicholas Michaels with two PRs (15.98) and (42.13) On the girls’ varsity side, Peninsula sophomore Arisa Matsuzaki placed first in both the 100 meter hurdles (17.64) and the 300 meter hurdles. Her 49.75 300 time was her personal best. Peninsula’s Christen was second in both hurdle events, and Palos Verdes senior Tally Theder was third.

The PV vs. Peninsula track meet this year was competitive, as both teams gave tremendous efforts in all events.

Said Christen, “Lots of people talk about that ‘we’re a real family’ team feeling, and I didn’t understand it until senior year. The track and field team really feels like a family. I’m definitely gonna miss the family when I graduate.“ Christen’s advice for incoming freshman: “Theres gonna be tough runs, but it’s so worth it if you can cross that finish line with everything you’ve got.”
