Competing against 127 golfers from 23 Los Angeles Archdiocese schools, Downs took first place honors.

She previously placed first in her category at the CYO fall and winter golf tournaments as well.

Seven Years Of Publishing On The Hill Publisher’s Note (crazy talk)

The "Premier Issue" of PVP-Youth Sports News was published on April 27, 2007. We began right in the middle of baseball and softball seasons, mainly to see how the paper would be received and what kind of advertising support we would get from the community.

Seven years later, it’s been received pretty well by just about everybody.

Most of the early editions up to 2009, unfortunately, are lost on a portable harddrive that we cannot get to open. Publishing the paper and processing all the photos has worn out one turquoise G3-Mac and one wide-screen iMac. We now publish on a customized MacPro with eight terabytes of hard-drive space.

On the cover of that first edition was a story about the Intermediate PV Mets, and a young Henry Chaussee, who pitched five strong innings with 12 strikeouts. He was relieved by Tanner Tellenbach, who earned the save.

There’s also a photo on the cover by “Heather,” who we saw last week along with Daniel, Jon and their “issue-riddled rescue dog” at the frosh/soph PV vs. Peninsula baseball game at George Allen Field.

Of course we would like to thank photographers Heather Schubert, Lisa Korn, Cathy Ige Tseng and Jana Wallace for their contributions in the early days. Also student-writers Duncan Reid, Matthew Gilbertson and Austin Welch, who is now a freshman at Dartmouth.

There are a whole lot people and families I wish to thank, along with the leagues, coaches and a few “favorite teams.”

But my foremost thanks must go out to all our advertisers - past and present.

Simply put, publishing this locally owned and operated newspaper would not be possible without their support.

One of the very cool things about this publication is that about 40 percent of all the content is provided by members of the Peninsula community. The other cool thing is that almost all our advertisers are local - and most of the business owners are residents of the Peninsula.

I think that says a lot. As many people know, I can go on and on about the state of our non-local media and what has happened to it during the last 10 years.

It’s a shame, but we’re here now taking up the slack and making things happen.

We have a plan, and we’re executing that plan to the best of our abilities.

And if we can go on publishing for another seven years, that would great. We’ll just see how it goes - every two weeks.

School District Priorities We here at Panorama headquarters are demanding that a special session of the PVPUSD school board be convened as soon as possible because there is a serious problem on the campuses of our two fine high schools.

Stop the selection process of finding a new school board Superintendent to replace the retiring Walker Williams.

All conversations and debate about this whole Common Core “thing” must also be stopped.

We ask all fundraising projects for the new turf field at Peninsula High and all Booster Club meetings at PV High be rescheduled until a plan of action is implemented and corrective measures are taken to rectify this serious problem that has recently been discovered at both our beloved high schools.

The issue is hot dogs! The grilled hot dogs served at the high school sporting events are far below Peninsula Little League and Softball standards.

It will be impossible for the old Big Daddy Nikon camera to cover high school

sports next fall with this gross negligence existing in his mouth and stomach.

We are shocked! Shocked to discover that the grilled hot dogs served to us recently at two high school sporting events were lukewarm and had soggy buns.

Soggy Buns!

We would never find this kind of substandard hot dog at Lunada Bay or Rolling Hills Little Leagues. The hot dogs served there and at PV Little League and at the five-star rated Lighthouse at Cornerstone Fields are always freshly grilled with nice toasty buns.

And our Diet Cokes are always served ice cold. And don’t let us even begin telling you how wonderful the chocolate chip cookies are at Silver Spur Little League.

We do not pretend to understand how this complacently toward the quality of grilled hot dogs has infiltrated at our local high schools, but this downward spiral of grilled hot dog quality must be stopped at once, and we demand that school district authorities take responsibility for this impossible situation and fix this problem immediately.

PANORAMA and Varsity Sports Some of our longtime readers and fans are probably wondering how we plan to cover frosh/soph, JV and varsity sports as well as everything else we do.

Well, we don’t know yet. But we’re going to give it a try.

It’s great fun watching these kids grow up in our pages. Athletes like Conor Wischmann, Grant Korn, Jake and Nick Frasso, "D" McCan, Hunter Walsh, Nolan Collins, Jessica Hay, Maddie McHugh, Steffi Best, Annie Gonzales, Austin Rule and Mickey Babek continue to excel at the high school level.

Oh, did we leave out a name or two?

Like maybe two or three hundred !

We also have plans to cover more of

the school musicals and dramas. We hope to be at the Norris Center this weekend to cover the “Harmony Concert” featuring the music programs of Peninsula and Palos Verdes high schools.

We also want to cover more of the science and engineering events, such as the District Science Faire, which is coming up.

We want to cover all of it.

It’s called PANORAMA. It’s a wide-lens publication that hopes to cover all the events and activities that young, active families participate in.

This is a community-based publication.

Most families never throw away their copies. That’s copies. No one takes just one.

We will only cover home games and primarily only Palos Verdes vs. Peninsula contests.

Also, if you strike out at the end of the game, miss the 15-foot jump shot in the final seconds, let the Panthers or Sea Kings score five goals on you in the net, let the ball go under your glove at shortstop or trip and fall at the finish line - you won’t see your name or a picture of you doing that in the pages of PANORAMA. That’s not our style. Never has been and never will be. We didn’t do that when you were 10-years-old and we’re not going to publish that stuff just because you’re now 17.

You’re PANORAMA kids.

You’re PVP-Youth Sports News kids.

It’s about participating in your community with your family, team and friends.

It’s about expressing yourselves through art, music and dance. It’s about discovering new ways to view the world through science and technology.

It’s about living your lives in a state of joy while competing and having fun.

And of course - it’s about the snackshacks!

John Woooden’s Lessons Local Students Set To Can Last A Lifetime Swim In "Shark Tank" Entrepreneurs Story by Linda Reid

John Wooden’s lessons apply to all.

We all seem to quote him.

Parents and coaches of young athletes, business women, politicians, and educators, even a few Trojans . . . We all quote legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden. His wisdom-equally applicable to life on and off the court.

“Be quick but don’t hurry,” is one of my favorites. When my eldest son was beset with chronic health problems while trying to achieve his athletic goals as he began high school, I reminded him, “Adversity is the state in which man most easily becomes acquainted with himself, being especially free of admirers then.” The same son cringes every time we speak about his chemistry grade and I declare, “Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.”

I was fortunate to work with Coach Wooden in my continuing role as public relations director for the John R. Wooden Award. The award is given annually to the nation’s most outstanding college basketball players, the young men and women who best reflect Coach Wooden’s ideals of the “total basketball player.”

One of my most prized possessions is an unimaginative poster I designed for the award in the late 1990s, which he autographed for me, “To Linda, who worked so hard to design this fine poster.” One of my fondest memories is introducing my husband’s best friend, a high school basketball coach from Klickitat, Wash. (population 500), to Coach Wooden at the 1997 Award.

Many of the nation’s top players and coaches, from Coach K to Michael Jordan, recall fondly the precious moments they spent during the award weekend with the man known simply as “Coach.” As the Wooden Award has continued since Coach passed in 2010, young people often ask why Coach Wooden is held in such reverence nearly 40 years after he won his last NCAA title.

They know the name, but will never know the man, so he lives on in his sayings and his Pyramid of Success. I invited two sports producers at “Live from 205,” Palos Verdes High School’s award-winning broadcast journalism program, to attend this year’s award. Ryan Cosgrove, a Bruin next fall who is destined for greatness in life, and Josh Golding, a motivated sophomore who brings thoughtfulness to everything he does, knew about Coach Wooden, but I thought they would enjoy seeing the celebrities and the players all interacting, not to mention the opportunity to get a top NBA draft pick to film a quick station promo: “This is Jabari Parker from Duke, and you’re watching Live from 205.”

He went on to star at Duke, and mentioned to me that he hopes both PV high schools return to the glory days. Bilas has many of his own memories of Coach Wooden. In between taking selfies with all of the Wooden Award All-Americans, Bilas offered his own version of a Woodenism, based on a trait he most admires, toughness: “Tough people fail, but tough people are not failures. The only failures are those who give up, or give in.”

Borrowing an idea I copied from Silver Spur mom Linette Woodland, I tape a saying onto each of my boys’ bathroom mirror every few weeks. As I post Coach’s words of wisdom, like in so many locker-rooms, classrooms, boardrooms and offices, I remember that in building his pyramid Coach was not only providing a foundation for winning basketball games but also for life beyond the white lines, principles that place us all on firm ground.

Last week, since the Wooden Award Gala was about to take place, my eldest son brushed his teeth while reading the Pyramid of Success. I asked him to consider the traits on the pyramid he has in spades: loyalty, self-control, and condition. I then asked him where he could improve: cooperation, patience. He asked me why faith was included. For my youngest son, a boisterous 11-year-old who bounces from sport to sport to sport to math homework, not always with equal focus, Coach Wooden on the mirror offered simply this: “Don’t mistake activity for achievement.”

The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!), which is sponsored by the Palos Verdes Chamber of Commerce, is holding its first ever “Shark Tank” investors’ panel at Trump National Golf Club on Wednesday, April 30, at 5 p.m.

YEA!, beginning its first year in Palos Verdes, takes students through the entire business creation process, from brainstorming ideas to launching and running their own business or nonprofit.

YEA! is national program for middle and high school students that was founded in 2004 at the University of Rochester.

Since the program began, more than 1,000 businesses have been launched. The Palos Verdes chapter is the only chapter currently in the Los

Angeles area.

It is a year-long class where students are required to complete an application, an essay and attend a personal interview before being accepted into the program.

Classes are held once a week on Wednesday evenings at Peninsula High, with many of the program’s students attending Ridgecrest, PVIS and Miraleste Intermediate schools as well as Peninsula and Palos Verdes high schools.

Given the popularity of the TV show “Shark Tank,” organizers are hoping for a large and supportive crowd to show community support for all of the hard work these students have done to get their business ideas to this point.

High School Rivalry Hits The Diamonds

Junior Varisty Frosh/Soph Story by Matthew Gilbertson

A run into the CIF playoffs is the ultimate goal for the varsity baseball teams on the Peninsula, but for the Junior Varsity and Frosh/Soph teams nothing is bigger than the Palos Verdes vs. Peninsula rivalry.

Bay League play began last week and opened in the most fitting way, as PV and Peninsula squared off and renewed their rivalry.

The Frosh/Soph teams played at Miraleste, and the game was close. Peninsula scored first, but PV answered with three runs in the top of the 3rd inning.

Peninsula cut PV’s lead to 3-2 after scoring in the 4th. That score held until the bottom of the 6th.

After PV displayed five strong innings of defense and pitching, Peninsula broke out and scored three runs to take a 5-3 lead going into the 7th.

Nick Frasso came in to close for Peninsula, giving up one run but holding on to the lead and securing the victory.

The Junior Varsity squads played their first of two matchups at Palos Verdes High. James Latimer started for PV, and Nolan Collins took the mound for Peninsula. Both pitchers did well and kept the game close.

Peninsula opened the scoring on an error by PV and an RBI single by Ethan Wu. The Sea Kings scored three runs the next inning on RBI singles by Latimer and Conor Wischmann.

Kyle McElroy replaced Latimer on the mound and held Peninsula scoreless the next inning while PV scored two more runs. In the 5th inning Peninsula started to mount a comeback, as RBI singles by Danyel Ledezma and

You Can’t Touch This . . . Peninsula

freshman pitcher Hunter Walsh shut out the Sea Kings with some nasty pitches and helped Panthers secure an 8-0 win at George Allen Field.

Jamie Black brought Peninsula to just a 5-4 deficit.

However, PV matched Peninsula’s two runs and entered the 7th with a comfortable 7-4 lead.

Closer Grant Korn took the hill and struck out the first two batters, but got into trouble after two walks and an error, bringing PV’s lead to just one run with the tying run on first. Korn got the next batter to fly out, and PV recorded the victory.

Two days later the action resumed as the Frosh/Soph teams played at George Allen field with Peninsula looking for a sweep.

This game would not be as close as the first one, as Peninsula won, 8-0.

Hunter Walsh started on the mound for Peninsula and held PV scoreless. The Panthers supported him with a steady supply of offense, scoring in five of the seven innings. PV was unable to start anything offensively, and the Peninsula Frosh/Soph team took both games in the series.

The Junior Varsity teams also played on Friday as they competed at Penin-

sula High. Juniors Sam Weiss for Peninsula and Willem Webber for PV started for their teams.

Peninsula took a 2-0 in the lead in the 1st, and PV evened the score in the 2nd. Peninsula scored again in the 2nd, and held the lead for the rest of the game.

The Panthers added to their lead and entered the 7th with a 7-3 lead and handed the ball to Ben Shapiro. PV began to rally as Peninsula struggled defensively, and with two outs a single to center field seemed to keep PV’s hopes alive.

However, the center fielder made a perfect throw to cut down the runner going home for the third out.

The series opened with two exciting one-run games for the JV and Frosh/ Soph teams, but Peninsula won both games on Friday by a comfortable score.

Overall, Peninsula’s JV and Frosh/ Soph teams had the upper hand and took three of four games.

It will be a brand new season once the softball playoffs begin in two weeks as each and every time will have the opportunity to pick up a season-ending trophy.

Marlins, Yankees Lead The Pack Pony League • The Marlins and Yankees have separated themselves from the rest of the league and are competing to finish the regular season in first place.

The Marlins opened the season with a 11-7 win over the Yankees, but the Yankees came back a few weeks later to capture a 9-3 over the Marlins at George Allen Field. The teams will face each other one more time during the last weekend of the regular season on May 10 at Ernie Howlett Park.

The Yankees’ Jake Nolls and Nick Gilligan are leading the league with four home runs each, but the Marlins Chandler Tansavatdi and Matthew Meskin are right behind them with three each.

The Diamondbacks, Giants and Rays will attempt to finish the regular season above the .500 mark and hope to get on a winning streak when a new season begins with the playoffs.

AYSO Celebrates 50AYSOYears On The Hill

Black And White Shoes? With Shoe Laces? . . . The 1969-70 Cobras were ready for action at Mira Catalina School as AYSO soccer kids were just beginning to take over the Peninsula. Times were tough for soccer kids back then - without Velcro and Skittle candy colored shoes.

• Now considered the largest youth league of any sport in the South Bay and one of the largest in the entire nation, Region 10 of AYSO celebrates its 50th anniversary on the Peninsula.

Fifty years ago the American Youth Soccer Organization was established in Torrance. Over the last 50 years AYSO, which once started out as a small program with just nine boys’ teams, has grown to over 50,000 boys’ and girls’ teams across the country.

In Palos Verdes Region 10, there are approximately 280 teams alone. Nationwide there are 250,000 volunteers that help AYSO each year as coaches, referees, administrators or as team parents.

All these volunteers put an emphasis on fairness and sportsmanship, two fundamental principles that AYSO has exaggerated since its founding year, along with AYSO’s motto “Everyone Plays”.

AYSO is different from other soccer programs because it stresses the importance of balanced teams and fair playing time.

The birthplace of AYSO gets the honor of hosting the national games from June 29 – July 7.

The games will be spread out throughout Torrance and Palos Verdes in order to accommodate the many number of teams taking part in this event. Both boys and girls participating in U10-19 will have the opportunity to play in the national games.

The national games have not happened in Torrance since 1992. This will be a very exciting event that anyone can come and watch.

Spring Colors Mark Fun Run Success . . .

Vista Grande students participated in the annual Fun Run to raise funds for the school.

Students ran for an hour and raised more than $30,000. Participants were led by Principal Jeri Delatorre. Staff, parents and motivational speaker and author Brent Poppen cheered on students while they ran.
