Pony League and Little League are back with a full slate of games this weekend while the AYSO Spring Select season, which never stops, also continues the action on the local fields.

Spring musicals, science and tech fairs, art and photography shows are also on the calendar this spring as Panorama gets ready to cover everything.

The 10-year birthday edition of Panorama will be out April 29, while two new webcast videos on “Pippen” and the STEM symposium will be on the website in a few days.

Male Dancer Part Of PEN Team Dance • The Peninsula High Varsity Dance team continues to build as a team.

By Lily Shah Andrew Bauer is the only boy on Peninsula High School’s 25-member Varsity Dance team.

Bauer, a junior, has been on Varsity Dance since his sophomore year. He began to focus on dance when he was only six years old.

From age six to eight he mainly took recreational classes, and at 10 he joined the hip hop team at his dance studio.

After two years he decided that hip hop was not his passion, so he began to train more seriously in ballet, lyrical and jazz. He eventually joined his studio’s competitive dance team.

He continued dancing on a team outside of school into his freshman year, when he was on Advanced Choreo at Peninsula. But once he made Varsity Dance, he stopped dancing with an outside team.

When asked if he was ever hesitant to join a team of just girls, Bauer replied,” I wasn’t hesitant to join a team

with girls because I have always gotten along better with girls.”

Bauer is from a family of two girls and one boy, so he knows how to get along well with girls.

Bauer’s favorite part of joining Varsity Dance is “the fact that I instantly gained 24 new friends”. He is proud of the fact that he gets along well with everyone of his teammates.

“The long practices are much better with my team there,” says Bauer. “That’s what’s amazing about our team. We are

all friends.”

“Most other teams have to do team bonding because the relationships between the people on their teams isn’t healthy. We tend to do team bonding because we all love to hang out together. Like one big happy family,” said Bauer.

As Bauer concludes his junior year season on Varsity Dance he gets ready for his last year on Varsity Dance as a three-year member and senior.

"Pippin" Finds Happiness At PV

• The Palos Verdes High Drama Department performs “Pippin” beginning this weekend.

By Jenna McFarland One of the most-performed and beloved musicals in theater history, “Pippin,” is coming to Palos Verdes High School, courtesy of the PV High Drama Department. It will run for eight perfor-

mances through April 23.

In this riveting play, the young Frankish prince Pippin is in search of the secret to true happiness and fulfillment. He seeks it in the glories of the battlefield, the temptations of the flesh, and the intrigues of political power.

In the end, though, Pippin finds that happiness lies not in the extraordinary endeavors, but rather in the unextraordinary moments that happen every day. With an unforgettable score, amazing cast, and captivating plot “Pippin” promises to entertain.

The Drama Department has worked long and hard since January to make this show as amazing as it is. This show is more complex than previous performances, but that is what makes it so special.

According to junior Hallie Kostrencich, “Compared to the other shows we’ve done, this show has an untraditional ending and it’s a show that’s not all happy all the time, but that is what I like most about it. It definitely makes it more challenging as an actor, but we’ve made a lot of progress and I think it’s going to make the show unforgettable.”

A huge part of the success and talent of the PV Drama Department is

their connection and chemistry with each other as a cast.

According to stage manager Viv LaBreche, “The cast, crew, and pit are all huge and really a big family. Each person brings something to the table and there is never a dull moment.”

The hard work and dedication of every member of the Drama Department, both on and off the stage, is unmatched and is what makes this play truly amazing.

The immense talent of the cast and crew of “Pippin,” combined with their hard work and chemistry on stage, is going to make for a must-see show that will definitely not disappoint.

The production is recommended for ages 13 and over. Performances are April 14-15 and 21-22 at 7 p.m., April 15, 22-23 at 2 p.m. and April 20 at 3:30 p.m. in the MPR at Palos Verdes High School, 600 Cloyden Road in Palos Verdes Estates.

STEM Symposium Takes Center Stage

• Peninsula Education Foundation highlights District STEM program at annual symposium.

By Nia Li While technology grows, students from all grades and schools begin to participate in more and more programs that relate to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

The Peninsula Education Foundation (PEF) held its annual STEM Symposium again this year.

PEF has funded many programs and events that increase interest in activities many students may not know about.

Since the state does not provide as much funding for the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District (PVPUSD) as it does other school districts, PEF needed another place to help create more opportunities.

As the STEM program began getting more attention and growing as an extracurricular activity, PVPUSD came to PEF and asked for funding to provide these students with what they wanted.

“Palos Verdes always wants to be on the cutting edge,” PEF Develop-

On the Peninsula side of the symposium, there were many different opportunities that can open up a world of STEM. These include VEX, StellarXplorers, Cyber Patriots and more.

The students learn how to secure networks and computer systems, which is important, especially since cyber security is a big upcoming trend since everything today is digitalized. Peninsula has gone to national multiple times and won first place twice nationally StellarXplorers is a competition similar to cyber patriots and is modeled after it. However, it mainly focuses on space exploration and designing many different gadgets and machines that can help complete a task assigned.

It is sponsored by the Air Force Association and during the competition, students design satellite orbits that can best complete the given mission.

“StellarXplorers is a fun program that I really enjoy,” Tim Jiang said. “I just

Although the science field is rapidly growing, it is essential to expand the outreach to younger students who may not have heard about these programs.

These programs will help do that and the many events they participate in the showcase their work will generate the buzz that they need.

“StellarXplorers has opened me up to the whole aerospace industry and all the future opportunities I have,” Robert Peltekov said. “I was also introduced to many heads and representatives of some of the leading companies in the aerospace industry which was really intriguing.”

PEN Baseball Improves Fan Experience Upgrades • Peninsula High comes together to improve the baseball fan experience.

By Asumi Shuda For the players and spectators at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School, the netting surrounding the baseball field is one of the most important elements for both safety and for watching a game.

The project to replace the old, ragged fencing, which has encapsulated the baseball field for years, has been completed.

With the help of Wendall Yoshida, the athletic director at Peninsula High, the baseball program has been able to create an opportunity to restore this netting into its rightful condition.

“Safety was the very first thing considered when we decided to do this project, said baseball coach Brian Bowles.

Coach Bowles said the newly installed netting is higher than the old one, which had allowed many errant baseballs to fly over the fence, endangering cars and passersby along the street outside of the field.

“Another reason to make this project happen was the aesthetics of the netting,” Bowles said.

Looks do matter. Having a clean, new fence can be pleasing for spectators. It makes watching the games easier and gives a professional look to the entire athletic field.

“Instead of having 25 holes in the netting, with rusty chain links, it would

In order to have this kind of project take place, money had to come from somewhere.

The two biggest sources for funding are the Peninsula High Booster Club, which donated $5,000 to the netting project, and, with the help of Mr. Yoshida, baseball fundraisers. The Booster Club 67 percent of the project, and the baseball fundraisering paid the rest.

Every year, there is a Christmas Tree fundraiser organized by baseball fans and team. According to Coach Bowles, this charity event has been a tradition since he was a Peninsula High School student himself, and even before. This event helped pay the rest of the portion, bringing the netting project to life.

“The event is both to raise money for the team and the essentials we need with it, and for the players to bond with

each other and the community,” Bowles said.

Baseball brings players, fans, parents, and even the community together, and the fence plays a big part in this bond.

Having a strong, well-built fence around the field to keep the dangers of misguided baseballs out of the pic-

ture can both ease the feeling of nervousness of spectators and to keep the neighbors from worrying when the next baseball would break their window.

Hagee developed a project-based lesson around the primary documents presented at the academic conference, which prepared a detailed timeline for the Cold War. Students took on the role of modern-day tech companies, such as SpaceX and Virgin Galactic, and were provided with classified documents

from the Cold War. Utilizing these documents, the students created presentations on the Cold War through the lens of the space race between the years 1945 to 1962.

As a participant, Hagee received membership to the National Council for History Education and has been asked to present the lesson at next year’s NCHE conference, where she will continue to make an impact in national educational institutions.

Youth Coach Makes Lasting Impact

• Dan Spring’s love of baseball impacts South Bay baseball and Peninsula families.

By Sammy Funk Dan Spring has been doing baseball camps, clinics and private lessons for more than 13 years.

He started playing in Little League, as most children do, for a team in Washington, D.C., where he was born and raised.

After Little League, he played middle school baseball, which is a Pony age division, then moved on to play all of his four years at St. Albans High School, with then-coach Dave Baad, who’s now the assistant headmaster at St. Albans.

Coach Baad taught him how to play catcher, shortstop and second base during his years at St. Albans.

After high school Spring was accepted at Brown University in Providence, RI., and played baseball all four years, before graduating in 2003 with a degree in public policy.

In that same year, the Detroit Tigers took him in the 42nd round of the baseball draft. He was released in 2004 on

the last day of spring training, but he signed with the St. Louis Cardinals a few weeks later.

He spent about seven weeks in extended spring training in Florida with the team. He retired at the end of the summer of 2004 and moved to Palos Verdes.

He said he was tired of the cold weather in the East.

When asked why he decided to coach, he said, “My obsessed love of baseball.”

He made it through all levels of baseball by working hard and putting in extra practice time during the day. He said he learned he needed to put in a lot of extra work.

He started coaching for a youth baseball camp in D.C. when he was 13 and too old to participate as a player.

Then, when he was 16, he started helping a coaching friend give lessons, and he continued coaching through college in the offseason.

Spring never assumed he would coach. He thought he would be a professional ballplayer, but when he retired, he decided to coach because of his love of the game. Now he can coach all year in sunny California. Where he used to live on the East Coast, he had to practice in basketball gyms due to the snow.

In his junior year of college he started doing clinics and camps. When he got to the South Bay, he started volunteering for the Little League teams’ practices.

“By the spring of 2005, it was pretty clear there were no good baseball camps in the area,” he said.

Taking Infield . . . Youth baseball coach Dan Spring leads the Rolling Hills Little League tryouts this season.

His first year he ran two weeks of baseball camp in July. The second year, he did four weeks of summer camp.

Then, he kept added more weeks.

“It’s too fun to be called a job,” he said.

He credits a few of his coaching mentors as the biggest reason for starting the camps. His Little League idol, John Macarthy, taught him the mental side of baseball. The camp he ran back East is still around today.

New Season Begins This Weekend

Little League

• The second half of the Little League baseball season begins this weekend with games played all over the Peninsula.

Only the Silver Spur Cardinals and the Rolling Hills Tigers, both from the Minors Divisions, hold undefeated and untied records going into the second half of the season.

The Peninsula-wide home run derby is becoming a two-man race with Palos Verdes Little League’s Niall Collins (8) and Rolling Hills Little Leagues’ Lucas Lees (7) leading the pack of local big hitters.

With all leagues and divisions back in action this weekend, check out the next edition of Panorama on April 29 for some serious baseball coverage.

. . . Continued from Page 10 fun and encourages them to keep playing. His camps also teach kids how to support each other. He likes to have campers know how to coach, too, so he has them coach at 13, under the supervision of an adult coach.

Youth coach Anton Richards said this about coaching for Spring, “It was tons of fun as a camper, and I learned a lot and now as a coach, it’s fun to teach the kids what I was taught.”

Another youth coach, Austin Siddiqi, said, “It is a great way for kids to get better. There are nice coaches that give great advice.”

After he’s done with lessons, Spring goes home to his family. He has two young children, Maddux and Sloane. He says that he is looking forward to coaching them in the future.

PV Crushers Rule The West

AYSO EXTRA

• Local team finishes tournament season with 18-0 record and Western States Championship.

The AYSO EXTRA girls’ U10 PV Crushers are the Western States Champions for 2016/2017 season. The team defeated West Garden Grove, 1-0, in the semifinals and defeated Moorpark in the championship game, 7-1.

The tournament was held in Carson City, NV. on March 25 and was comprised of four AYSO Sections covering Arizona, California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington.

AYSO Soccer Girls Are California Gold

. . . Continued from Previous Page This was the second year in a row that the PV Crushers represented Section One in the WSC, completing their magical season with an undefeated record of 18-0 and outscoring opponents 84-7.

PV Crushers is only the second Palos Verdes Region 10 representative to win

the Western States Championship.

The semifinal game matched the Crushers against West Garden Grove in 40 degree cold and 20 mph winds against the back drop of snow-capped Sierra mountains.

The Crushers dominated ball possession and shots on goal in the first half but could not score until midway

through the second quarter when Lanie Escobar scored the game’s first and only goal.

Entering the second half, West Garden Grove took advantage of the wind at their backs and applied pressure, but the stingy Crusher defense, anchored

by Madi Park, Katie Marley and Grace MacInnis, proved too difficult to penetrate.

Keepers Hailey Camp, Carly Arthur, Alexa Wollner and Joelle Lewis contributed to the shutout.

The championship match was slightly easier as the Crushers went out on an early 3-1 lead against the wind in the first half, finishing with a 7-1 win.

Four different Crushers scored: Katie Marely, 3, Lanie Escobar, 2, Nicolette Daniel, 1, Sofia Askinosie, 1 with stellar defensive play from the rest of the team. This championship erased

the disappointment from last year’s bitter loss in Bullhead City, Ariz.

In two years, PV Crushers have posted more than 60 wins, capturing two league titles, two regional titles, two sectional titles and one Western States Championship along with four local tournaments championships.

Coach Mauricio Escobar said, “The girls deserve all the credit and praise.

They have earned it through hard work and dedication. They have been one of the best teams in the State for two years in a row. I am very proud of this special group of 10 girls.”

Next season the team will expand to 12 players playing 9v9 hoping to win back to back titles with an unprecedented threepeat appearance at Western States Championship.

PV Kids Represent AYSO . . .

Siblings Shane Camp and Hailey Camp represented Palos Verdes Region 10 in the Western States Championship in Carson City, Nevada. Shane, 7th grade in Miraleste Intermediate School, played for PV Strikers boys’ U13 Extra Team and Hailey, 4th grader in Rancho Vista Elementary School, played for PV Crushers girls’ U10 Extra team. The odds of a team making it to the Western States Championships is slim but to have two siblings on different teams is unprecedented. Hailey’s team won the Championship while brother Shane fell short and came in 4th place. Parents Jesse Jackson Camp and Molly Mehlberg Camp, were standout high school athletes and both played collegiately at UCLA.
