Kisses And Laughs At PV High Musical Spring Musical

• Musical comedy hit “Kiss Me, Kate" set to take the stage at Palos Verdes High School.

Brush up your Shakespeare with Cole Porter’s musical comedy "Kiss Me, Kate," presented by the Palos Verdes High School Drama Department for seven performances April 13-22.

Passions run high as leading lady Lilli Vanessi and her ex-husband, actor/director Fred Graham, battle onstage and off in a production of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew.

Throw in a number of cases of mistaken identity, the mob, and show stopping dance numbers, and you get "Kiss Me, Kate" – a dazzling Broadway classic that earned the first Tony Award for Best Musical.

Featuring classic hit songs “Another Op’nin’, Another Show,” “Always True To You in My Fashion,” and “Too Darn Hot,” Kiss Me, Kate promises to entertain.

Performances are April 13-14 and 21 at 7 p.m., April 15, 21-22 at 2 p.m., and

April 20 at 3 p.m. in the MPR at Palos Verdes High School, 600 Cloyden Road in Palos Verdes Estates.

PEN Art Student Earns National Recognition

• Student artwork qualifies to be chosen for U.S. Postal Stamp.

By Nina Li Peninsula High School junior Ari Cho has been named one of the winners of the 2018 California Junior Duck Stamp competition by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

She received the esteemed title of Best of Show in California last month.

Her Hooded Merganser will compete with other Best in Show artists at the Nationals in Washington, D.C. Winner of the Nationals will be

By creating this competition, the Service “is raising awareness for the wildlife that may be potentially in danger of becoming extinct. It also gives young artists a way to learn about the importance of wildlife.”

“After hearing about [the competition] from my art teacher,” Cho said, “I researched many different types of ducks to draw. The Hooded Merganser stood out to me since the purpose of the competition was to make the painting into a stamp. I learned about the environment of the duck and decided to make the background as simple as possible so that the duck would stand

Cho started taking art lessons at a very young age and, she said, found that it was an outlet for her to express herself in a way she could not do otherwise.

Her family members all enjoy art, and she is surrounded by artists who encourage her to keep painting.

“Art has always been my escape,” Cho said. “When I pick up my paintbrush, I focus only on my canvas and my ideas. The blankness of the canvas in front of me allows me to begin something new and unique.”

Cho takes lessons three times a week for four hours or more and is focusing on creating her portfolio for college. She said she does not exactly know what is in store for the future, but she believes her art can make an impact on the world and wants to continue to be able to express herself through each piece.

“To me, art is a nonverbal way of communication,” Cho said. “It is me being able to express every emotion I feel where words would not be able to suffice. It can also give me the platform to share my ideas with others if I cannot explain it in coherent sentences.”

• National Charity League, Inc., Palos Verdes Chapter celebrated its Ticktocker class of 2018 at its annual Senior Recognition event at Terranea Resort.

The signature event recognizes the cumulative efforts and accomplishments of graduating Ticktockers and their mothers.

“This celebration honors the mother-daughter bond and recognizes what we can accomplish together for the good of the community,” said

Christine Myrick, Palos Verdes Chapter President. “It is an especially important milestone for our senior Ticktockers.

Through community service, leadership development, and cultural experiences, they have grown into strong women who will continue to serve and positively impact communities into the future.”

Young Heritage Kids Take On Shakespeare 2nd Grade • Second grade students at Peninsula Heritage School are presenting Shakespeare this spring.

“When will we have rehearsal?” pleaded the Peninsula Heritage School Second Graders as excitement grew for their recent Midsummer Night’s Dream performance in the school’s Amphitheater. “And please call us by our characters’ names,” they reminded their teacher during math class!

This third annual Shakespearean production enabled these young students to become familiar with the Bard’s work in a natural fashion.

The comedy was selected by Second Grade teacher Mrs. Kylie Esturain for its playfulness, its fantasy characters, and its ability to highlight each student’s attributes. The children heard the story version first and then learned their parts from the modified script that contains exact lines from the original play.

“I saw such growth in the children,” relates Mrs. Esturain. “They were brave, took risks, and worked as a team, encouraging each other.

And in the performance for their parents and the Kindergarten through Eighth Grade student body, they really brought it!”

the mother-daughter relationship. The traditional six-year core program also includes leadership development and cultural activities.

Established in Los Angeles in 1925, and incorporated in 1958, National Charity League, Inc. is the premier mother-daughter organization of women and their daughters in grades 7-12. Currently the membership organization has 65,000 members in 242 Chapters that thrive in 26 states.

Miraleste Student Organizes Charity Run

Giving Back

• Miraleste Intermediate School 8th Grader Connor Spencer puts together a charity run at Ernie Howlett Park.

By Shelby Ponce Connor Spencer is an 8th grade student at Miraleste Middle School who has a passion for helping others.

“I have been doing charity work since I was 7 years old,” said Spencer.

“I’m very passionate about it. I hope to continue it throughout my life.”

This year Spencer organized a twomile “Charity Pie Run,” a run/walk event that was held on Saturday, March 31 at Ernie Howlett Park.

The event was open to all levels of runners and walkers. Everyone received a small pie for participating, and the top three winners were presented with a full pie and a ribbon.

The event raised money for Heifer International and Doctors Without Borders.

Heifer International is an organization working to end hunger and pov-

erty throughout the world, a Heifer spokesperson at the Spencer’s event explained.

Doctors Without Borders is an organization designed to provide medical service to more than 70 war-torn regions and developing countries.

Chubby Cheeks Inc., or Chubby Cheeks Charity, is Spencer’s official, nonprofit organization through which he raises money for charity.

Today it’s hard to believe that such an incredible occasion and charity project was all made possible by such a young teenager. Spencer brought together a community, not to make money for himself but for others.

Seniors Have Eyes Wide Open For College Next Level • High school seniors are looking for college oportunities all over the nation.

By Jenna McFarland It’s that time of year again. College acceptances are out and high school seniors are making the choice of what the next four year of their lives are going to look like.

Some are staying close to home, while others are embarking on a journey across the country. No matter what,

it’s an exciting time of change and the beginning of the rest of their lives.

When making the tough choice of where to go, there are countless factors. Many of the factors are intangible, but one of the most obvious, tangible factor is location. The question going through the minds of local seniors is: Do I stay in sunny Southern California or do I try somewhere new?

For many, like senior Sue Park, the answer was to stay. Park will be attending USC in the fall, and explained that she “was not opposed to leaving, but when acceptances came out and it re-

ally came down to it I realized that this is where I want to be.” She loves USC and thinks it’s her perfect fit, and for her, it’s location is an added bonus.

She also went on to explain that although living somewhere new for college sounds like a great adventure, “I didn’t feel the need to leave because I think college itself is an adventure, no matter if it’s 20 miles away or 2000 and you really just can’t beat Southern California.”

Many seniors share the sentiment, and PV seniors will be found all around Southern California next year, from USC to UCSD to Chapman to UCLA. However, others will be taking the leap to Northern California because , for them, it’s far enough, but not too far.

And still others, like PV senior Ni-

cole Chernoff, will be going across the country. For her, attending Boston University next fall sounds like the adventure of a lifetime.

Although she loves where she grew up, she said she wanted to try somewhere new for her next four years.

She explained, “Although it’s kind of terrifying moving across the country, I can’t wait. I want to experience real weather and a new culture and a new city.” She went on to say, “I love where I live, but how am I supposed to know what I really want and like without ever trying anything new.”

“I’m nervous, but I can’t wait.”

No matter where seniors end up next year, that is the overwhelming sentiment. They can’t wait.

PEN Student Wins Science Fair

• Peninsula High School student takes first prize at L.A. Country Fair to qualify for INTEL competition.

By Nina Li Christian An, Peninsula High School junior, has placed first in the Los Angeles County Science Fair in biochemistry and molecular biology and is now advancing to INTEL, an international science and engineering fair.

Several Peninsula students competed in the L.A. Fair, held March 22-24, where they displayed the projects they have been working on throughout the year.

The Peninsula students are part of the Science Research program, under the guidance of Melissa Klose.

This was the 15th year that students have been participating in the fair, but the first for An. An has been a part of Science Re-

search program for two years, this year being her third year.

INTEL, An’s next competition, has students from across the globe gather and share their projects. From Japan to Germany, these students present their projects and display their findings to win awards or scholarships.

Little League baseball on the Peninsula took a weekend-to-weekend spring break and is competing in its first slate of full games this weekend.

Science Fairs Leads To INTEL Competition

. . . Continued from Page 9 was from other seniors who went there, and I am definitely excited not only to display my research, but to meet new friends and learn about what they did.”

An’s project focuses on biomedical engineering and attempts to advance microspheres, which can be used to locally deliver drugs.

Before she started her project, she set three requirements for her microspheres: They had to be biocompatible, multilayered and have controlled dissolution.

To reiterate, she compared inserting microspheres into a body that would be sent out to a personal pharmacist.

Her microsphere not only can control the rate at which the drug would dissolve but also has multiple layers to send out different drugs at different times.

“I am still debating whether or not I want to continue my project next year, but some of my judges encouraged me to apply for a patent, so I am currently looking into that process,” An said.

Finding a topic for research did not

come easily. In her first year participating in science research, she thought of a psychology experiment and was stuck at a desk reading CT scans for a doctor. However, she knew that she had bigger ideas than being stuck behind a desk. She decided to apply to labs at nearby universities but was unable to get a response.

Finally, she decided to take matters into her own hands and rented her own lab space, where she started the project that would carve a path for her to advance to INTEL. “It was a frustrating when I ran into a problem because I did not have a mentor to turn to,” An said. “However, I think I learned more and the fact that I did it alone makes me even more proud of my project. I am very interested in biomedical research and biomedical engineering, but it would be a lie to say that the field is not intimidating. I do not want to limit myself to one field just yet but I am definitely passionate about the myriad of possibilities that lie in the research.”

Battle For Top Spot Heats Up Junior League

• The Angels and Yankees move up the standings to threaten the Rockies.

The first-place Rockies began the second half of the season with a 6-4 loss to the Cubs, while the Angels and Yankess picked up wins. The Angels got a 6-0 win over the Dogers and the Yankees got a 5-2 win over the Red Sox to begin their second-half stretch of the season.

With most weekend games being played at big George Allen Field, there has to be a recorded home run this season.

Spring Select Season Close To Playoffs AYSO • The boys’ 10U Silver PV Thunder and boys’ 12U Gold PV Furry lead their divisions with undefeated records in the 2018 AYSO Spring Select League.

PV United also sits in first place in the boys’ 12U Bronze division with a 4-1 record. The 10U Gold PV Flash, 12U Silver PV Sparks, 12U Gold PV Crushers and the 14U PV Fire all are in second place in their respective girls’ divisions.

The spring soccer season goes through the first week of May before playoff action begins.

Winners received a medal and a ticket to see Disney On Ice "Frozen" show. On Saturday May 19 the Ice Chalet will hold its production of "Pinocchio" with two show times at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
