• Palos Verdes and Peninsula high school students unite for the United Track and Field meet.

At a time when society is becoming more inclusive, Peninsula High School is reflecting that sentiment with its first Unified Track Meet.

Students from Palos Verdes and Peninsula high school’s Skills for Independence Class participated in a track meet put on by many leadership students and teachers, including Peer Leaders Uniting Students (PLUS) teacher Patrick Daley.

Daley, along with other students and Peninsula’s Skills for Independence teacher Betsy Fujinaga, attended united track meet at North Torrance High School, which sparked the idea of having Peninsula host one as well.

“I contacted Fred Steiner to get the band involved, Dan Doctor to get the choir to sing the anthem, local firefighters to come and show their support, and district and school board members,” Daley said.

“I wanted this event to bring the community together and exemplify what an exceptional place we live in. So much behind the scenes work went into this and it

was all worth it seeing what joy it brought to our athletes, Daley said.

Daley hopes that the event will be held annually, and based on the result of the day, many students agree.

“I think the event thrones put really well,” said Paula Ejarque. “The crowd was big and loud, which was awesome for the athletes. Everyone seemed so happy and excited to be there.”

The event lasted about two hours, with students participating in track events, such as the 50 meter, 100 meter and relay. Every student from the Skills for Independence

classes was paired with either a leadership student, a track and field member or just someone who volunteered to help.

“My favorite part was to run and get to interact with everyone,” said Ejarque.

“It was so much fun, and it brought me so much joy to be part of such an awesome event.”

Like Ejarque, many of the students who volunteered to be a buddy with a runner were appreciative of the opportunity to participate in the event.

“My favorite part was seeing and feeling the enthusiasm given off by everyone

present,” Lexi Harris said. “You could not not feel happy and energetic. I loved the t-shirts and capes many athletes wore.”

The overall atmosphere throughout the entire meet was one of community and pride for the students’ fellow peers.

“I thought the event turned out perfectly,” Harris said. “With the firemen handing out medals, and the bleachers full of students, it was a really fun and memorable day for everyone involved.”

PEN Senior Set To Begin College and D3 Football The Future

By Justin Kim My name is Justin Kim and I’m a senior at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School. I have committed to play Division 3 football at Pomona College next year and I’m excited to pursue a major in economics.

My whole life I have played basketball, starting from club basketball in the South Bay F.O.R. League with the Sidewinders and AAU with Los Angeles Elite. I played JV basketball my freshman year and varsity basketball my sophomore, junior and senior year.

In my senior year I joined the football team. Through the tough practices in the spring and the summer, our team worked hard everyday, and finished the season with an impressive record.

We made it to the CIF Division 11 championship game, surprising the Hill community with an outstanding season.

It was one of the most memorable teams I have ever been on, meeting some of the best teammates and friends I could ask for. I only wish that I had joined sooner.

Initially, I dreamed of attending college far from home, on the East Coast. I applied for early action to a few schools and was deferred to regular decision before I got the call from a coach at Pomona College.

At the time, I was in Florida with the basketball team for a tournament. I was taken back by the call, and everything started to happen in a rush. I was excited

to receive such an opportunity at Pomona.

My childhood dream has always been to play sports at the next level, and I was eager to have the chance to study econamics at Pomona. I chose to play college football for a number of reasons.

The education offered was one of the first and foremost factors in my decision.

Although I had not heard or known much about Pomona before, once I researched the school and looked into their curriculum, I was certain that this would be the best possible education I could ask for.

What also convinced me was the experiences I had with my high school football team this past year. There is nothing like the feeling of having 40 to 50 teammates who always have your back.

Spending countless hours with them in the weight room and on the field brought us together like a family, something that

no other sport or activity can do.

I learned the importance of teamwork and dedication, how to work with purpose and with others to benefit the team.

These life lessons that I took away from the team experience I wanted to continue at Pomona and make more lifelong friends.

What truly helped me receive such a great opportunity was the help and support I got from my parents, teachers, coaches, teammates and friends that I have met throughout my life.

If my parents hadn’t supported me playing sports from when I was a kid, I could never imagine being able to meet the amazing people that I have today.

If it wasn’t for coach Russell Payne who coached me all my life in basketball and taught me so many life lessons, I would not be the person and studentathlete I am today.

My teachers all pushed me hard at Peninsula, but being able to survive through the workload and stress taught me how to become a diligent and responsible student.

Without my teammates and friends, I would lack the confidence and experience they each provided me with to succeed.

All these people in my life are what truly convinced me to attend Pomona College and play football there. I wish to respect all the support they have given me in the next step I take in my life.

East Coast Colleges Have A Draw The Future • Only a few weeks left before local seniors can officially relax.

By Nina Li After all the hard work, the months of stress over college applications, the time for decisions has come.

As students receive rejections, acceptances or wait-listings from their colleges choices, many have to choose between various colleges across the country.

When applying to colleges, students take into consideration many factors.

From what they will be majoring in to the size of the campus, there are many schools that seem to be the perfect fit for their criteria. However, when the actual decision comes out, the location of the school seems to play a big part of where

a student will ultimately decide to go.

Many students at Peninsula High School will travel to the East Coast to attend colleges in New York, Massachusetts and other states far away from Palos Verdes. The reasoning behind attending these schools is obviously more prominent than just where the school is, but the location is one of the factors students take into account when picking from their acceptances.

There are many differences in the two coasts. The weather, people and atmosphere are opposites, yet many students flock to the East to start a new life, far away from their homes.

“I am considering going to college in New York because I think that being on the East Coast presents many more opportunities for me and my future,” Ari

Cho said. “Being in the city and experiencing the hustle and bustle of the busy streets invigorates me and helps me get my creative juices flowing.”

One of the biggest differences between the two coasts is the weather. The average temperatures dips to 40 degrees in New York, a stark contrast with sunny California. While temperatures do reach that temperature on the West Coast, the overall atmosphere of the East Coast is gloomier.

However, students are inclined to travel far away to experience a new area and be exposed to a new lifestyle. The East Coast offers more opportunities and a chance for students who have been living their whole lives in California to be exposed to invigorating ideas and unique people.

“Although California has amazing weather, I do not always want to take the easier and more comfortable route. It also gives me a chance to be more independent and meet a diverse group of people.”

College is the time for students to be independent and come out of the sheltered life with their parents. It is the place for students to expand their knowledge, both academically and socially. Wherever students decide to go, whether on the West Coast, East Coast or Midwest, all of them will be experience a new type of lifestyle and, hopefully, thrive.

. . . Continued from Page 3 everyone is included. There is no room for isolation on Peninsula’s campus, especially when there are so many students who have great ideas and compassionate hearts.

“It was day of inclusion, where everyone came together to celebrate our similarities and our differences,” Daley said. “All those who participated were one team. All the athletes were able to experience a full American high school experience.”

The event will hopefully live on as a tradition on Peninsula’s campus and, possibly, spread to campuses across the South

Bay as a day to celebrate every individual.

It is a very memorable event and allows students’ hearts to grow a little bit bigger.

“Seeing the smiles on our athletes faces and the good sportsmanship being practiced from everyone involved was my favorite part,” Daley said. “At one point I was actually able to soak it in and look around. What I saw gave me chills. Principals, district employees, school faculty and staff, students, athletes, media, family, friends—we were all one for those two hours.”

Baseball Action Springs Ahead

No Breaks

• The second half of the baseball season is underway with nonstop action taking place all over the Peninsula.

Going into the second half of the season the Palos Verdes Red Sox are the only undefeated Major Division team.

The Rolling Hills Orioles and Silver Spur Angels are the only undefeated teams in the Minor Divisions.

There are many teams with only one or two losses, and any one of them could finish the season as league champion and maybe even as King of the Hill.

Baseball has been back in action from spring break for only a few days, so Panorama coverage is limited. Plan for a “Mega-Edition” up next on April 27.
