Peninsula Host International Film Festival Film Festival • The Peninsula played host to the 2014 Universe Multicultural Film Festival last week with 32 official films produced in 19 different countries.

Peninsula Center Library, the RHCC Community Center and the Promenade hosted film showings during the three-day festival, highlighted by a red carpet introduction and award show celebration at the RHCC Community Center Sunday night.

The film "Salt" (Chile/Argentina) won the Grand Jury Prize for best feature. The film "Stelle" (Switzerland/ France) won Grand Jury Prize for best short film.

International Community Shines On The Peninsula . . . International delegations, producers, directors, actors and musicians were on the Red Carpet for three-day 2014 Universe Multicultural Film Festival last weekend.

Recognition. . . . Peninsula residents Raju and Philo Chhabria present an award for an outstanding film from China during the UMFF award show.

Song And Dance . . . The UMFF audience was entertained by a wide variety of local and international talent.

Shrek To Take The Stage With Song And Dance At PV High • The musical comedy "SHREK THE MUSICAL" will be presented by the Palos Verdes High School Drama Department for seven more performances through April 19.

Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks film that started it all, "Shrek The Musical" brings the hilarious story of everyone’s favorite ogre to dazzling new life on the stage.

In a faraway kingdom turned upside down, things get ugly when an unseemly ogre — not a handsome prince — shows up to rescue a feisty princess.

Throw in a donkey who won’t shut up, a bad guy with a short temper, a cookie with an attitude, and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero.

Luckily, there’s one on hand…and his name is Shrek.

Nominated for eight Tony awards, including Best Musical, and featuring a terrific score of 17 all-new songs, "Shrek The Musical" is part romance, part twisted fairy tale and all irreverent

fun for everyone.

“Shrek the Musical takes us on a hero’s journey, and along the way we learn about dealing with isolation and loneliness, risk-taking and adversity, companionship, and breaking stereotypes”

said Palos Verdes High School drama teacher Nicole Thompson, who also directs the show.

Vocal direction is by Sue Secrist, with choreography by Kirsten Chandler.

The production stars Max Havas as Shrek and Kyra Johnson as Fiona.

Other principal actors include Grant Unno (Donkey), Terren Mueller (Farquaad) and Alex Gordillo (Pinocchio).

The 33-member cast also includes a large ensemble of talented students in featured roles.

Performances are tonight, April 12, and April 17-19 at 7 p.m. and Sunday April 13 and 19 at 2 p.m. in the MPR at Palos Verdes High School, 600 Cloyden Road in Palos Verdes Estates.

Following each matinee performance, audience members are invited to meet the cast in the theater courtyard.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for students and $20 for premium tickets, which includes a light snack and beverage. Tickets can be purchased at www. pvhsdrama.com or at the door if seats are still available. For further information, visit the website, or call (310) 3788471, ext. 237.

Five Chadwick Students Win Scholastic Writing Awards

• Chadwick School has a long history of producing awardwinning writers. The permanent Virginia Daniels Collection in the Leavenworth Library holds scores of their books - and the tradition continues in the 21st century.

Five Chadwick student writers from grades 8-12 recently received honors for their fiction writing in the prestigious 2014 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards regional competition, highlighted by senior Emily Robertson, who won a national award for the second straight year.

Silver and Gold Key winners include seventh-grader Anandi Chowdhury, who won a Silver Key for her entry in the Science Fiction/Fantasy genre, and Robertson, who received two Gold Keys - one for her short story and one for her overall writing portfolio.

Robertson also was awarded two Honorable Mentions in the short story and poetry categories.

As a Gold Key regional winner, Robertson was eligible to compete for the Scholastic national awards and re-

ceived a Silver Medal in the short story category. Robertson received both national Gold and Silver Medals in the 2013 competition. National Medal winners gather in New York this May for several days of special events culminating with an award ceremony in Carnegie Hall.

Sophomore Emily Chao garnered an Honorable Mention for her short story, as did junior Kate McEvilly for her poetry. Senior Brianna DiMonda received two Honorable Mentions, one each in the Flash Fiction and Short Story categories.

The annual Scholastic Arts & Writing Awards program is widely considered to be the premier national writing and fine arts competition for student writers and artists.

The competition dates back to 1923 and counts among its alumni such writers and artists as Joyce Carol Oates, Truman Capote, Sylvia Plath, Andy Warhol, Richard Avedon and Robert Redford.

More than 185,000 works of art and writing were submitted this year, with

She is a parent of two children in the PVPUSD school district and has been active in a wide variety of high school, middle school and youth sports as well as various events on the Peninsula and the South Bay. She is a graduate of Stanford University and is currently a college admissions essay editor.

Her column will have a wide range of topics including the trials and tribulations of raising a family on the Hill, various issues concerning public education and our local school district and what it’s like being a very busy and sometimes very tired Mom on the Hill.

Science Tastes Real Good At Chadwick Science • Chadwick 5th Graders cook S’mores using solar ovens and eat the results.

Generations of campers and bonfire builders love them – those melted chocolate, slightly burnt yet sweet marshmallows, and convenient graham cracker casings known as S’mores.

What if you could have them any time, even during fire watch season?

Chadwick’s fifth-graders now hold the key to creating S’mores anywhere and anytime they have the ingredients and a sunny day, thanks to Village Science Specialist Ann Biedenweg’s solar ovens project.

Constructed of cardboard, aluminum foil, and plastic film, the ovens debuted last month on the Village greentop, producing mouth-watering results for their eager makers.

“The solar ovens project is part of the fifth-graders’ investigation of different types of energy, both renewable and non-renewable energy sources. I told the class I had all the ingredients to make S’mores, then challenged them to make them without using electricity or campfires,” says Biedenweg, who is also a Chadwick parent and member of the Class of 1981.

“They used their iPads to research how to make solar ovens, then collaborated to build them. Once they began

What could be better than saving power, learning about energy transfer and heat production, and eating the delicious results?

It takes about 30 minutes to bake S’mores in the solar ovens, according to Biedenweg. And yes - it’s possible to cook more nutritious snacks in the ovens as well. Quesadillas, anyone?

Peninsula Gets Lacrosse, Volleyball Wins High School

• The first spring high school rivalry games saw the Panthers get big wins over the Sea Kings at the varsity level. While PV JV and Frosh/Soph teams picked up wins.

The Peninsula High varsity lacrosse team got four goals from Colton Michel and key saves from Lance Plonski to help the Panthers defeat Palos Verdes, 7-6 last week at PV High. The teams will face each other again at Peninsula High on April 30.

The Panther volleyball team defeated the visiting Sea Kings in three games, 25-18, 25-23, 25-21. However the JV and Frosh/Soph Sea Kings racked up wins.

The programs will compete again in a few weeks, while baseball and softball are next on the rivally schedule.

The Men In Black Hold The Greens . . . The Palos Verdes High boys’ golf team won its first tournament under coach Ray Rivera at the West Covina Bulldog Invitational March 24 at South Hills Country Club. The Sea Kings topped 19 other squads competing in the 18-hole event, winning by an impressive 10 strokes over second place Servite. Jandro (sophomore) and Roy Cootes (junior) both shot 74 and senior Frank Malone finished with a 78.

Panther Frosh/Soph Team Celebrate . . . The Peninsula High Frosh-Soph volleyball team played at the North High Volleyball Tournament and took home second place, losing only to the El Segundo High JV team in the finals.

Chadwick School brought a large team of athletes to compete against some of the best runners, throwers and jumpers in the state. Be sure to check the PANORAMA track coverage of Palos Verdes vs. Peninsula in our May 10 edition.

Well-Organized Chaos . . . The Palos Verdes High Invitational attracted more than 30 schools from all over California and Nevada. The meet was wellorganized with events and races beginning at their allotted times with no long delays. The invitational featured team relays, individual races and field events.

South Bay schools sending teams included Chadwick, Mira Costa, Torrance and Redondo Union.

Playoffs On The Horizon For Softball

• There are only a few more weekends of softball to play before a new season begins with playoff action.

The Ninjas are looking cool with their black uniforms and undefeated record in the 10U Division, but every team will have a chance for postseason glory as anything can happen during the playoffs and championship games.

The Raging Sea Monkeys have taken over first-place in the 12U Division, but still have games scheduled with Heat Wave and Chaos before the regular season is over.

Peninsula teams #SwagBag and Wicked dominated the 14U Division against teams from all over the South Bay.

Purple Pizza Sounds Good . . . Purple Pizza got a 13-8 win over the

Sharknados to earn its first victory of the season and let the rest of the league know they’ll be ready for serious playoff action.

Ninjas Look Strong . . . The Ninjas got a 7-3 win over Crimson Dynamite to secure first place in the 10U Division at Cornerstone Fields.

Yankees Ground Marlins With Win Pony League • The undefeated are no more as the Yankees get a 9-3 win over the first-place Marlins at George Allen Field last week.

The Yankees also got a 13-10 win over the Dodgers Monday and are beginning to look tough to beat as the second half of the season rolls on.

There is still a solid month of action to be played before a new season begins with the playoffs, so the Marlins and Yankees better keep an eye on the DBacks and Red Sox who could easily get on a winning streak and finish the regular season in first place.

Competition Heats Up For Spring

Little Leaguge

• There’s still a month of regular season baseball left to play, but King of the Hill favorites are starting to stand out.

The PVLL White Sox and SSLL Royals have only one loss each and seem destined for a Major Division post-season showdown.

Anything can happen in intermediates, but the SSLL Rangers have only one loss, but the hard-hitting Cardinals at Lunada Bay are undefeated with the Dodgers not far behind with a 4-1 record.

Home Run City continues to be at PV Little League’s Valmonte Fields, but Silver Spur Little League at Ernie Howlett Park has more home run hitters than at any point in the last seven years.

And don’t count out Jason Lee’s four smashes at big Rolling Hills Little League, and home runs are always tough to come by at no-wind Lunada Bay and its 201 foot fences.

The SSLL-Pirates’ Sammy Monroy hits a home run during Major Division action at Ernie Howlett Park last week.

White Sox Hold First . . . The PVLL White Sox have taken only one loss this season and are in first place in the PVLL Major Division.

Intermediate Players Know How To Score Runs . . . The action was fast and furious between the Cubs and Dodgers at Lunada Bay Little League last week with the Dodgers pulling out a 20-10 win over the Cubs.

Select Soccer Facing Spring Playoffs AYSO

• There are only a few matches left in the Spring Select season with many Peninsula teams facing other Peninsula teams this weekend.

PV United will face the PV Dominators and the PV Comets will play the PV Strikers in the boys’ U12 Gold Division action highlighting PV vs. PV match ups.

Today is also the beginning of onsite AYSO Fall Registration at Hesse Park from 12-4 p.m.
