Heffernan was born March 17, 1995.

He sadly passed away after being hit by a drunk driver on Jan. 18, 2013, at age 17. He was a senior at Palos Verdes High School.

Since his heartbreaking passing, the Heffernan family has held an Irish celebration on Sean’s birthday with

Panthers Help Raise Funds For Athletes

Booster Club

• Peninsula High’s Athletic Booster Club held its 26th Annual “A Black & Gold Affaire” at the Palos Verdes Golf Club last week.

More than $180,000 was raised through the Live, Silent and Online Auctions, 50/50 raffle, wine wheel, Gift from the Heart and generous sponsorships.

Francine Mathiesen, co-chair of the event, said, “We are just so fortunate and thankful for the generous parents at Peninsula High. Without their support, we wouldn’t be able to maintain our sports venues or have our trainers to keep our athletes safe and competitive in their sport.”

The Athletic Booster Club helped pay for the newly resurfaced track, dance floor, tennis courts, baseball bleachers, weight room equipment, trainers and much more throughout the years.

Peninsula Jazz Players Shake Up The Hill

Music

• Peninsula High alumnus Sammy Miller and band lead fellow Panthers in a lively concert at Peninsula High.

By NIna Li High school helps shape students to achieve great things when they go off to college and eventually lead them to find jobs that interest them.

When musician Sammy Miller attended Peninsula High School and then The Julliard School, he chose to pursue his passion of performing with a jazz band and eventually decided to create “Sammy Miller and the Congregation” with his friends.

The lively jazz band is based in New York and has released original music along with tour appearances.

In 2015, they were nominated for a Grammy and many other music related awards. The band includes Sammy Miller on the drums, Sam Crittenden playing the trombone, Ben Flocks on the tenor sax, Alphonso Horne with the trumpet, David Linard playing the piano and John Snow on the bass.

sists of many varying music programs including marching band, music theory, concert band, orchestra and the jazz band, which perform alongside Miller’s band.

The intermediate jazz band includes 20 students, and the advanced band has 21. Director of the music groups, Fred Steiner, has been teaching at Peninsula High for 13 years and was Miller’s jazz band teacher as well.

When Steiner was contacted by the Congregation and asked if they could come and play again this year, he was delighted to be reunited with his former student.

Playing with a band that has had experience giving live shows can teach a lot to students aspiring to start their own music career.

The concert itself was exactly what the band wanted to communicate and the mission that they are on, “to put the generosity back into jazz and bring art back to the people.”

The entire two-hour event was filled with upbeat music from both levels of jazz bands. The bands were accompanied with the singing of Josh Zeitlin, and featured solos from Ashley Hong,

Marcus Emery, Christopher Chien, Gabriel Nievez, Christopher Alon, Chris Mendez, Joseph Sweetnam, Nate Coleman, Lailie Kasai and more.

When Miller and the band came onstage, they brought a whole new energy level to the performers and the audience.

Principal Mitzi Cress and District school board member Suzanne Seymour were in the crowd of about 600 who enjoyed the performance greatly.

The band performed a few of their renditions of famous jazz songs and got the crowd to sing along with some of them. Sammy Miller and the Congregation really are able to channel and bring a whole new mindset to music.

“The music students are truly talented and they care about doing well,” Steiner said. “Usually that means I get to focus on working with the students to create a truly musical experience versus struggling with discipline or organizational details.”

“It is really great to be playing with professionals on-stage and putting on a good show, but the most important takeaway from this performance was the learning experience I got from

watching and learning from Sammy’s band,” said Christopher Chien.

“They gave us a lot of great insight before the performance, and worked through all the tunes with us before we got onstage, and some of the things Sammy mentioned (like using the rims to play during the slower sections) are pieces of knowledge I will definitely remember for the rest of my time in jazz band,” Chien said.

The intermediate and advanced jazz groups meet in the middle of the school day and practice for their concerts while increasing their technical skills.

Before they have a concert, they focus on pieces they are working on so their performance is the best quality that they can provide. For their performance with the band, they practiced many hours during school with and without the band.

“I really enjoy the free-spirited nature of jazz, and how no two performances will go the same way because of the freedom that each player gets to change up the performance each time, usually through soloing,” Chien said.

PV Kid Leads Knights To State Title

By Sebastian Atashi As two-time state basketball champion Jordan Schakel sits in his room, he can see the influences of growing up in Palos Verdes everywhere.

His bed sheets are branded with the logo of USC, Pop Warner trophies line the shelves, and PVIS P.E. shorts are thrown across the floor. Schakel, a Division I basketball commit to San Diego State University, was born in Torrance at Little Company of Mary.

Growing up in Palos Verdes, Schakel was given the opportunity to excel in many sports “I played football exclusively until the 3rd grade before I picked up basketball, Schakel said, “I never felt any pressure to pick a certain sport, only the ones I truly enjoyed playing.”

He picked up basketball at Cornerstone Elementary, where his best friend was playing so he decided to give it a try. After realizing that he enjoyed the sport, Schakel started playing with his

friends in the Asian basketball league, even though he is not Asian.

“It was weird for me being one of the only non-Asian kids out there, but it helped me play the game without a lot of pressure. It’s where I started to fall in love with basketball,” said Schakel.

He did not begin playing travel basketball until the 6th grade, which is considered very late to many successful basketball players.

He was getting better, and his height was a big reason why. Schakel, already 6 feet tall in the 7th grade, was blossoming into a real talent.

Schakel’s father, Dan and his mother, Stefanie, an All-American volleyball player at USC, began to realize their son could be something special.

Stefanie explained, “Dan and I started realizing that no matter how much he grew, he was still agile and able to move like a smaller guard.”

As Schakel began to take basketball more seriously, he decided he would stop playing football.

“It was one of the harder decisions growing up for me,” Schakel said. “It was a game I had loved for so long, but it was time to move on.” Schakel now began to focus only on basketball, the decision that arguably made him the talent he is today.

Yet something was missing for Schakel, already on the younger side compared to his PVIS peers. He was still raw and knew he needed time to develop.

That would only happen in one way, so after talking with his family, Schakel decided that he was going to do 8th grade for a second time so he had time to grow and progress in his game.

“That was really tough for me, leaving all my friends that I had grown up with and had the biggest influence on my life, and going to a school now where I knew no one,” said Schakel.

He commuted to attend Our Lady Help of Christians in Los Angeles during that year, and he grew 4 more inches. Now came the tough part of choosing his high school.

Shackel explained, “Originally, I was choosing between Bishop Montgomery and Loyola, and Loyola is where I really wanted to go.” But after seeing the prices in tuition for both schools, Schakel chose Bishop Montgomery.

When asked if he was happy with his decision, Schakel could not hold back a smile and said, “absolutely.”

A four-year varsity starter, Schakel accumulated countless awards, including 10th on the school’s all-time scoring list. And shares the title of alltime varsity win leader with teammate Ethan Thompson.

the best team in California and perhaps in the country.

Schakel is going to continue his basketball career at San Diego State in the fall on a full scholarship to join their storied program. When choosing a college, it was tough for him to refuse an offer from USC, the school that has had a major impact on his life and a major impact on many other lives around the Hill.

Shackel said, “I chose San Diego State because it was a better fit for me.

Not taking the offer from the school I grew up wishing I would one day be at was a decision that I had to make for me.”

He then added, “I couldn’t be more excited to start in the fall.”

He credits growing up on the Hill for shaping him into the person he is today, saying, “It taught me how to be a better person and teammate, and to really love what I was doing.”

One thing he did add about Palos Verdes was that he believed it was harder to be a serious athlete in basketball.

He said, “There aren’t as many opportunities here for kids that want to be at the next level in what they do.”

Schakel may have a point, as the number of basketball student-athletes who continue on to play Division I from Palos Verdes seems to be lower than other places in the area.

Schakel is one of the exceptions, a star athlete and student who maintains above a 4.0 GPA. The Schakels still reside in Rancho Palos Verdes, and his sister Sofia is a freshman at Palos Verdes High When asked the all-important question regarding the friendly rivalry between Palos Verdes and Peninsula high schools, his face lit up again as he said, “Of course PV. I love it there. I would have gone there had I not left the Hill.”

Schakel will always love the Hill and credits the community for supporting him and helping him find his love for basketball. Now, Palos Verdes can continue to support this hometown hero as he moves on to be a San Diego State Aztec this fall.

PV Student On Career Rocket Focused Future • Palos Verdes High student on fast-track for international cosmetology career.

The Right Look For The Right Job . . . Palos Verdes High student Emma Wendorff is working and studying the art of cosmetology and fashion.

It’s clear to see that Wendorff is a force to be reckoned with already in the cosmetology world, but recently she has taken her passion to the next level.

“This year I started going to cosmetology school and I’m getting my cosmetology license, so that I can do hair and makeup professionally,” she said Not only is Wendorff a talented makeup and hair artist, she is now also a professional. But she isn’t stopping at getting licensed.

This upcoming summer, she will attend Parsons Fashion Summer Program in Paris, which is one of the most prestigious fashion and cosmetology programs in the world.

It’s safe to say that Wendorff has a bright future ahead of her in her specialized field, and with her natural talent, her hard work, and her love for what she does, she is going to be unstoppable.

When asked about her future plans, Wendorff said, “I plan on attending college, but not a typical university. I want to attend a school specialized in the area of fashion and cosmetology.”

It took courage to pursue a path that has been looked on differently by the typical high school junior, but Wendorff is an inspiration to other students to follow their hearts and write their success story.

By Jenna McFarland Some high school students struggle to decide between majoring in engineering or English in college, but that’s not the case for Palos Verdes High junior Emma Wendorff.

Ever since Wendorff was a young girl, she has been fascinated with cosmetology, and in recent years she has managed to turn her childhood interest into a full-time commitment.

Although her passion for hair and makeup is clear now, she was introduced to the arena by her other longtime love, dance.

She explained, “I got into cosmetology through dance competitions, where I was surrounded by hair and makeup.”

The love for her art was clear from the first introduction, although she did not immediately pursue it.

As said best by Wendorff, “I fell in love with the art of cosmetology at a young age, but didn’t pursue it as a future occupation until my freshman year because I was focused on dance and didn’t have the opportunity to explore it further.”

Her first official job as a makeup artist was for the Palos Verdes High formal during her freshman year, and since then her career has taken off. She has a steady stream of customers for all different occasions, but one job stood out as her favorite.

Wendorff shared, “My favorite job I’ve done was a wedding a few months ago. I had two assistants, and together we did hair and makeup for 10 bridesmaids, a mom and the bride. It was a lot of work and took us 10 hours to finish, but was so much fun, and I loved the

for the field and pursue a positive impact for their future and the future of STEM. The original competition was started in 1978 and is the oldest student organization dedicated for students interested in science.

On March 24, about 60 Peninsula students went to California State University, Bakersfield to compete in the state level of TSA. TSA accepts all grade level students from freshman to seniors and encour-

Sea Kings Excel at L.A. County Science Fair Science Awards

• More than 1,000 students competed at the L.A. County Science Fair last week.

Palos Verdes High sent 13 Science Research Projects to compete at this high level and was awarded with eight categorical awards with six out of 13 projects receiving Special Awards.

Run Keeps Spirits High

. . . Continued from Page 2 fun events to bring the joyful spirits of people like Sean, and remember his greatness.

The celebration included a fivemile run that starts each year walking through a beautiful garden the students planted for Sean. The run goes to Golden Cove and travels back to PV High. This was Sean’s favorite crosscountry running route.

Many people biked and walked the course as well.

A nature themed photography contest also took place in commemoration of Sean’s photography skills.

Before the run, the PV High band, The Black Cats, played some jazzy tunes, followed by the national anthem sung by a PV student, as well as a beautiful Irish folk song.

The Irish American Club showed the crowd a few dances after the tiring run.

An estimated 200 people attend this amazing event to raise awareness towards drunk driving.

Another chapter was added to the storied book of the rivalry between the Palos Verdes Sea Kings and the Peninsula Panthers.

The latest showdown saw the two boys lacrosse teams battle for supremacy on the field, with the Sea Kings dominating the Panthers by a score of 15-3. The teams had to battle on a wet and very muddy Peninsula field, making for an extra challenge.

The Sea Kings got off to a quick start, going up 1-0 on a goal from junior Jake Nolls. The Kings then added one more to close out the quarter on a nice finish from star senior John Gressett.

The Sea Kings then found more of a rhythm in the second quarter, adding two goals from senior captain Jack Larkin, and two from junior transfer Jack Collins, to make the score 7-2 at the halftime break.

Senior John Gressett said about the first half, “We came out a little sluggish and let the conditions have an impact on us.”

“The second quarter we just played our game,” Gressett said, “And it worked out a little better for us.”

The second half was more of the same for the Sea Kings, as Collins continued his scoring spree, adding three more to his tally in the 3rd quarter, helping the Sea Kings to expand their lead to 13-2 by the end of the 3rd quarter.

Sea King junior Erik Moore spoke about the 3rd quarter breakthrough.

“We knew we weren’t at our best in the first half, and we wanted to use the third quarter to really step on the gas and put the game away.”

The Kings added two more in the fourth, and Peninsula added one to end the game at 15-3.

Seniors Will Mbomeda and Bryce Kitagawa as well as freshman AJ Rosato scored for the Panthers.

The Kings will try to continue their dominance over the Bay League teams as they face Mira Costa and Redondo in the coming weeks.

PEN Defeats Culver City . . . In a hard-fought battle, the Peninsula boys’ lacrosse team came out with a much-needed victory over Culver City, 7-5, last week. Senior Scott Phillips returned to the field to help lead the team. Two goals were notched by senior Will Mbomeda, followed by one each from senior Bryce Kitagawa and sophomore Max Cha. Good defensive play from Ryo Nishimura, Patrick Slaught, Kevin Jones and goalie Matt Choi contributed to the win.

Panthers Pep Squads Raise The Bar

Cheer

• Peninsula High Pep Squad brings together the Panther family.

By Chiara Grimes The Pep Squad at Peninsula High School is one of the many enrichment athletic programs for students. It consists of song, cheer, mascot and flags.

Cheer is held separate from the other programs, but it often goes hand-inhand with the other activities. It is an irreplaceable part of Peninsula spirit.

It’s one thing sitting at the Zoo, the student section at Peninsula, and rooting on the Panthers, but it’s another thing to actually participate in cheering at athletic events.

Each program within the Pep Squad varies. The key aspect is that all squads cheer for football and basketball, and endorse other athletic teams such as water polo and wrestling.

Pep Squad is like a tight-knit family of students who delight in being a part

of a squad. It is one of the foundations of Peninsula, having a program that roots on Peninsula athletic teams by displaying their own talent.

Song and cheer consist of two teams, junior varsity and varsity, with typically one student captain for each team. Song is a variation of cheer and dance which in addition has the technique necessary in dance yet also does cheers.

Students in these programs experience something that few other programs offer. These programs not only cheer and execute dances at football and basketball games, but also participate in pep rallies at lunch that endorse different activities going on, such as Homecoming.

Besides the amazing experience Pep Squad offers, it also has an amazing coaching staff.

Loretta Alvillar, the head coach for song, pep flags and mascot, has been the coach for multiple years. She puts so much energy into the program that

Song team member Ava Council explains, “The bonds I have made from this program are unlike any other, and I wouldn’t have the best friends I have today without that. Pep Squad is truly like a family of people who provide endless support for one another.”

She is on the junior varsity song team and is one of the many participants that thrive through the program.

Vigorous tryouts for next season were held the week of March 28 to determine next year’s teams. Overall, this program is one of the many rewarding programs within the athletic community at Peninsula High.

Panthers Benefit From TCA Events

. . . Continued from Page 6 ages everyone to join and get a chance to experience this competition.

The competition was from March 25 to 26 and was a huge success for the Panthers. The competition events included Children’s Storybook, Video and Music Production, Webmaster, Tech Bowl, Architectural Design, Prepared Presentation, and many more. Each of the events include a theme related to STEM that the competitors had to follow in order to place.

They needed to include a portfolio that detailed what they did and then go through an interview process in which they were asked questions regarding their creation or event.

Peninsula won 13 medals ranging from first place to third place and a number of people qualified for the national conference to be held in Orlando, Fla. Nationals include students from all over the world and about 1600 of them come to compete against each other.

Peninsula’s chapter team was founded last year by presidents Saehui Hwang and Alisa Hathaway with chemistry teacher Chas Lee as the advisor. The team continues to grow as new students are informed about this club.

Hwang and Hathaway got the idea when both of them were in TSA Teams, another branch of the competition, and when they went to nationals in Texas, they discovered another part of TSA called TSA events held in Bakersfield.

They decided to start a local school chapter that could compete at the state level and gradually go to nationals.

TCA Panthers Go On Road Trip . . . Peninsula High students travel to Bakersfield for the Technology Student Association event to learn and compete in science and technology programs.

“I decided to join TSA because I love science along with public speaking, and TSA gave me the ability to combine both my interests,” Hathaway said.

“My favorite part of the conference was getting to know so many different people around parts of California and being able to share my interests with others,” she said.

When the chapter team first began, there were only about half of the people there are now. Some new members of the team include Ari Cho, Kevin Chen-Xiao, Robert Peltekov, Nicole Tam, Anne Lee, Christina An, Joanne Lee, Jocelyn Ma, Megan Jung, Michelle Yamakawa, Saahil Parikh, and more. They took this as a great chance to increase their knowledge in this field.

“Even though this is my first year

competing, it was a really amazing experience,” Cho said.

“I did Children’s Storybook, and when we placed second, I knew all our hard work paid off. The two months that we spent creating our storybook and the countless hours we had for painting and writing really shone through as we accepted our award,” he said TSA not only acknowledges the benefits of learning about STEM, but also focuses on student leadership.

Last year a leadership program called LEAP was introduced that highlights and outlines the qualities needed to become a good leader.

The LEAP resume include the big pillars of Be, Know and Do. They talk about how to become a leader and maintain a healthy environment for all

the teams.

“Students are able to challenge themselves in new fields that STEM extends to at the national competition,” Hwang said. “I have met many enthusiastic students from across the world, with a common passion for STEM.” With all of students’ time focused more and more on computers, it would be a good time to put that time into a useful way to benefit themselves and the society.

Through TSA, students change the way technology can be used, science can be implemented, and carve a pathway for more and more people to become engineers. Their motto, “Learning to lead in a technical world,” is exactly what Peninsula is doing.

Miraleste Ready For Spring Musical Showtime

• Miraleste Intermediate is set for the spring music season with a production of the classic "Bye Bye Birdie."

• Spring break means time for the top teams and players to spend more time practicing for the second half of the season.

The Rolling Hills Tigers and Silver Spur Cardinals from the Minors Divisions are the only teams on the Peninsula with undefeated records.

The Palos Verdes Dodgers and Rolling Hills Indians are the only Major Division teams with one loss and may be heading for a King of the Hill showdown.

The Rolling Hills Cardinals have no losses but one tie, while the Palos Verdes Blue Jays look strong at 7-1-0 in the Intermediate Divisions.

PV Fusion Strike Gold . . . The AYSO girls’ U16 team PV Fusion took first place at the AYSO Thousand Oaks Pot O’ Gold
