• The Palos Verdes Basketball Association held its annual "Championship Sunday" last week.

Third Grade to 8th Grade boys championship games were held at the Peninsula High gym. Girl championship games were held at the Palos Verdes High gym, while 1st/2nd Grade and Kindergarten teams played games throughout the day at the Peninsula Field House.

PVBA is one of the most popular leagues on the Peninsula, with close to a thousand players and 100 teams participating.

The spring sports season is underway with baseball being played at all levels throughout the Peninsula.

And the local snack shacks are well stocked with burgers, cookies, soda and other great healthy food for all Peninsula residents to enjoy.

Walk For Life Celebrates At Ridgecrest

Spring Blossoms At Botanic Gardens

• South Boast Botanic Gardens host Cherry Blossom Festival this weekend.

By Mary Scott As one of the first signs of spring, the short-lived cherry blossom has to come to symbolize hope and humility, the beauty of life and the short time we are gifted.

Festivals celebrating the cherry blossom, which have great spiritual meaning in various Asian cultures, have taken place for centuries in Japan. Festivals have also sprung up around the United States; locally, at the South Coast Botanic Garden.

Despite the rain, the SCBG Foundation opened the annual Cherry Blossom Festival last week and continues it this weekend with musical performances, yoga and tai chi demonstrations, a craft for the kids, and cultural exhibits today.

The cultural events are provided by a first-time partner of the festival, the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute.

The highlight of the festival, of course, are the blooming cherry trees (four species) planted throughout the property.

If you cannot make the festival, do get there soon as the blossoms only last for about two weeks.

SCBG started the Cherry Blossom Festival shortly after the 2010 arrival of Adrienne Nakashima, current CEO for the SCBG Foundation.

Before her arrival, the Botanic Garden didn’t have an event to acknowledge the coming of spring. “It really started off as a family picnic day and sort of a celebration to welcome the blooming of the cherries,” she explained.

“But over time, [the festival has] grown in popularity.”

A family friendly event, guests are invited to partake in the activities suitable for all ages and to bring a picnic lunch and dine under the pink-hued petals on the Sakura (Japanese for cherry tree) Meadow or the amphitheater lawn.

While touring the grounds, guests can also take in the sight of other springtime blooms, such as the native poppy and other wildflowers.

The festival is a perfect time for residents unfamiliar with the Botanic Garden to become acquainted with its various themed gardens, such as the Japanese Garden, the Banyan Grove and the Garden for the Senses Birds and butterflies are ample and

can be seen fluttering from flower to flower.

It is a great place for families to spend time together in nature, the CEO said, especially at a time when green space seems to be dwindling. “This is 87 acres right in your neighborhood that you don’t have to travel far from [and] that provides education and provides a secure place for families to be in.”

Long-range Plan The Botanic Garden, once a landfill, opened in 1960. Since then the garden has expanded to feature more than 2,500 species of plants on 87 acres.

A popular venue for events and weddings, and a place to learn about the environment and different parts of the world, Nakashima said the Botanic Garden has become a community and cultural hub.

In 2013, the foundation completed a long-range vision plan, identifying additions, expansions and improvements to the existing gardens. The foundation has identified three specific projects that will indeed move forward.

The foundation plans to renovate the ever-popular Rose Garden, and will complete designs for a new Children’s Garden and Native Plant Garden.

The public can view the final plan for the Children’s Garden during a presentation on Thursday, March 12, at 1:30 p.m.

The final plan is the culmination of public and stakeholder input.

The Children’s Garden, Nakashima said, will be a place for learning: “Where we will inspire curiosity.”

The South Coast Botanic Garden is located at 26300 Crenshaw Blvd. in Palos Verdes. The Cherry Blossom Festival takes place on Saturday, March 7, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The festival continues on Sunday, March 8, with a family picnic day and self-guided tours. Admission is $9 for adults, $6 for seniors 62 and older and students with ID, and $4 for children 5 to 12. Admission is free for children 4 and younger. PVIS Wins Medals District Science & At Science Olympiad Engineering Fair Set Science Olympiad • PVIS students impressive in its first Science Olympiad.

The Palos Verdes Intermediate 2015 Regional Science Olympiad team finished in 12th place at the Science Olympiad competition at Occidental College.

In its first year of competition, the Sea Kings placed 12th overall out of 40 middle schools competing.

The two medal winning teams of Nathan Matharu and Cheetah Zhu

finished in 5th place in "Crave the Wave," and Kapil Dheeriya and Zach Huang placed 5th in "Road Scholar."

The Science Fair

• The PVPUSD Science and Engineering fair is set for March 11.

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District Science and Engineering Fair will be held this year on Wednesday, March 11 at the South Coast Botanical Gardens.

More than 120 research projects from Peninsula and Palos Verdes high schools will be presented and will be competing for awards and prizes.

The ultimate grand prize is that two student projects will be selected to

compete in the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair held in Pittsburg in May. This is the largest high school science competition in the world in which students from more than 70 countries compete for as much as $125,000 in prize money for the first place overall award.

Other lesser amounts as well as college scholarships and computers are also presented to students placing in the INTEL competition.

Sea King Speaks On Professional Ethics

• Palos Verdes High student starts regional high school Ethics Bowl.

Max Minshull was invited to speak at the 24th annual APPE (Association for Practical and Professional Ethics) conference at the Hilton Orange County in Costa Mesa.

Minshull’s panel topic was “Ethics Bowl: Models of Curricular Integration.”

He is the first high school student to start a regional high school Ethics Bowl and the first to be on a panel at the national conference.

The conference was held Feb. 19 through the Feb. 22.

The meetings provide an opportunity to meet practitioners, professionals and scholars who share your interests.

The Association for Practical and Professional Ethics was founded in 1991 to encourage interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching.

The Association is also the sponsor of the National Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl, the 10 Regional Intercollegiate Ethics Bowls, the International Two Year College Ethics Bowl and the National High School Ethics Bowl.

High School Spotlight Bond Between Brothers On Peninsula High Track Track & Field • As track season begins at Peninsula High School, the Ogele Brothers will look to reach an unprecedented level of success.

• Foothill High defeats Peninsula in CIF boys’ basketball Tuesday night at Peninsula.

By Jack Grimes Spring is in the air, and this means that Peninsula track season is right around the corner. This year, the Panthers are sure to feature various exceptional athletes that will most likely appear in the CIF and State Championships. Most notable of these athletes are two brothers of Nigerian descent: Obinna and Ozioma Ogele.

Obinna, commonly known as Obi, is a junior at Peninsula and looks up to his senior brother and idol, Ozioma (known as Ozi).

Raised in Inglewood, these two athletes are the faces of Peninsula’s track team and have set high expectations on both themselves and the entire track program for this season.

Obi stars in myriad events, as he participates in high jump, long jump, and sprinting. Ozi focuses on long jump and sprinting and is anticipating attending college to pursue his track dreams.

When asked about his goals for the upcoming season, Obi replied, “I really want to be able to long jump over 23 feet and get to 11 flat or lower in the 100 meter dash.”

While these goals will be difficult to achieve, they are definitely attainable and will probably result in a medal for Obi in both Bay League and CIF Championships.

Ozi also has high expectations for himself this year, as he hopes to break multiple school records, especially in the 100 meter dash and long jump. He believes that he will be able to jump over 24 feet for long jump, a distance that will indubitably be long enough to compete for the state championship.

In addition to the 100 meter dash, high jump, and long jump, these talented brothers utilize their athletic abilities in the 200 meter dash and their favorite event: the 4 by 100 relay team.

“Our favorite event in track is definitely the 4 by 1,” Ozi explained. “It gives us the opportunity to compete together in doing something that we love. Track is mainly an individual sport, but this event enables us to be on the same team.”

Ozi, most likely the fastest sprinter on the Panthers, will anchor the 4 by 100 team this year, and Obi will run the third leg of the race. This means that Obi will actually be handing off the baton to his older brother, who will then finish the race.

Obi and Ozi will look to have success at Arcadia, which is the biggest high school track meet in the country, as well as in the CIF and State Championships. They also want to lead Peninsula to a repeat title as Bay League Champions.

Overall, Obi and Ozi are extremely talented athletes that will lead Peninsula’s track program this year. Though they often compete separately on the track, the bond between them remains strong at all times.

In the CIF Division 1-A semifinals, the Peninsula Panthers lost in a nailbiter to the Foothill Knights, 70-61. But the Panthers proved that they are far better than their 16-14 season record suggests.

Peninsula started the tournament as a clear underdog as an 11 seed, but reeled off three impressive victories, before the Panthers’ season came to an end in the semifinals.

Four hours before the Foothill game started, hopeful Panther fans, known as “The Zoo,” could be seen waiting in line in front of their home gym. These same fanatics filled up an entire side of the bleachers and were deafening with their chants throughout the game.

Foothill also brought a sizable crowd, which ended up being just as rowdy. Both sides were ready for this showdown.

Both teams started the game hesitantly and forced up many shots. With only three minutes left in the quarter, only four points had been scored.

The Knights jumped into the lead, in large part because of center Eric Patton. Patton played great defense for the Knights as he was a big pres-

ence inside the key. Patton had 3 early blocks, including two that were sent into the stands, and finished the game with 5 blocks.

Neither team could gather any momentum in the first quarter, as the Knights were up 9-8.

Peninsula held down Knights’ star player, Riley O’Hern, in the first half, but O’Hern went crazy in the third quarter. He scored 11 of his 27 points in the third quarter and hit three threes. Peninsula played mostly a 1-31 defense during this stretch, which allowed O’Hern to catch fire.

The Panthers stayed in the game throughout, with Kurt Milch leading the way. Milch finished the game with 15 points and hit big-time shots all game.

At the end of the third quarter, the Knights led the Panthers 46-43.

Foothill forward, Lucas Araujo hit a couple of clutch lay-ups. Araujo finished the game with 11 points, with six of them in the fourth quarter.

When Foothill seemed to be pulling away and sealing their victory, the Panthers kept roaring back.

Matt Oh and Mickey Babek ignited the comeback for the Panthers late in the game. Babek hit a clutch threepointer to bring the Panthers within one point, and Oh finished multiple hard drives to the basket with strong finishes.

Sea Kings Set For A New Season Baseball • Palos Verdes High baseball is ready for action after a long offseason.

By Matthew Gilberston After months of practice, scrimmages and opening day festivities, the high school baseball season has arrived.

Palos Verdes Sea Kings baseball players are exciting about the upcoming season, and junior Joe Caparis expressed his optimism saying, “This is our year.”

The Sea King Varsity, JV and Frosh/ Soph teams all played two scrimmages on the final day of February, and now that March has arrive all three teams will begin the season competing in separate tournaments.

The Sea Kings have high expectations this year. Senior Captain Dirk Dirko said, “We hope to achieve not only a great season but also for the team to come together and become a unit.”

Last season, the Varsity team finished with a 14-14 record (5-5 in league) and made the CIF playoffs.

Their playoff run was cut short after a first-round loss, but PV looks to make a deeper run this year.

Junior Alec Abdalah said, “With the talent we have there’s no doubt that we should have a really good season.”

The Sea Kings will also renew their rivalry against Peninsula, and look to bounce back from being swept by the Panthers last year. Palos Verdes also feels confident in their ability to

While several of last year’s starters graduated, many key contributors to last year’s varsity team will return, adding experience to a talented team.

This combination has the potential for a successful season. Said Abdalah, “If we are all willing to focus and have that common goal we are going to dominate.”

The Palos Verdes High track and field team not only has a new head coach, in Brian Shapiro, but also a new attitude of dedication that coach Shapiro brings to the squad from his six years at the helm of the school’s nationally ranked cross country teams.

Shapiro’s teams have won four state titles and have 10 podium finishes over the last five seasons in cross country.

The distance runners figure to anchor the track and field team, as in recent years, but PV looks to be drastically improved in the sprints this season.

Football players Lance Brown and Arman Clayborn, along with varsity cross country runner Davis Butler, who has proven his ability at 400m and 800m, will help in this regard.

Top frosh-soph runners moving up to varsity include Isiaiah Sears, David Bisignano, Adison Umrarong and Jeremy Johnson.

Top sprinters on the girls side include Julia Diamond and Alexis Nickl.

Sprint coach Marieke Veltman, a former All-American heptathlete and 1996 Olympic long jumper at UCLA, will bring a new focus to the sprinting corps.

In the throws, football players Anthony Carresi and Jack Murphy will look to make CIF for the Sea Kings.

Of course, the distance runners from Shapiro’s cross country team will lead

the way in the 400m, 800m, 1600m and 3200m events.

Palos Verdes 4x400m relay looks to be a factor in the Bay League, and the team will run a national class 4x1600m relay at several invitationals as well.

On the girls side, sophomore Camille Hines and junior Morgan Irish are returning CIF Finals qualifiers in the 800m. The senior duo of Cassidy Webber and Anna Pruter are the squad’s returning CIF-qualifying milers.

Junior transfer Jacquelyn Smith, the team’s top cross country runner in the fall, is eligible in track beginning in April and looks to be a factor along with junior Abbey Watson and senior Anika Jensen.

For the boys, junior Robert Franklin and senior Jake Cohen are strong at both 800m and 1600m.

Senior Bennett Gagnon, a Gonzaga commit, looks to fare well at the CIF level in the mile, and junior Duncan Reid, a US number 33 in the 2-mile this indoor season, and freshman Ian Irish will contribute at 800m, 1600m and 3200m.

The team opened its season against CIF power Saugus yesterday, with Saugus winning the boys and girls meets.

Individual event winners for PV included Gagnon in the boys 1600m; Hines in the girls 800m; Jake Cohen in the boys 800m; and Reid in the boys 3200m.

Today, the team hosts 20 teams from throughout California at the PV Invitational, which runs all day at the Palos Verdes High School track, so come by and check out these amazing athletes.

• The Palos Verdes Basketball Association finished its season last week with championship games in all divisions.

The 8th Grade Blue Man Group finished the season undefeated after defeating the Pelicans in the championship game at Peninsula High.

The Run N Gun also finished the year undefeated after a big win over the PV Thunder in the 4th Grade championship game.

Championship games for the girls’ divisions were held at Palos Verdes High while Kindergarten and 1st/2nd Grade teams played their season-ending games at the Kelly Field House.

The first-place Mets and Pirates will face each other today at 2 p.m. at George Allen Feild to highlight this weekend’s games.
