Peninsula Students Walk With A Cause

Walk for Life

• Annual fundraiser takes Peninsula High students from campus to Highridge Park.

By Dale Pyoun Palos Verdes Peninsula High School students on Wednesday, Feb. 24, conducted their annual “Walk for Life,” a short-distance walk dedicated to cancer research and fundraising. This year Panthers raised the standards with $48,000 raised.

Without a doubt, this walk makes a significant difference on the lives of others year in and year out.

What makes this walk so unique is that every student wears the same shirt that brands “Walk for Life PVPHS 2016.”

On walk day, there was a sea of students walking together towards the same cause. This year students threw purple powder in the air before the walk. Students were covered in purple.

This new aspect of the walk makes the annual event even more memorable for Panthers.

Lizzy Mansukhani, a leading coordinator of the Walk and current Peninsula student, recalls the experience of walking her senior year.

“I thought it was incredible to see so many students come out and walk. This event definitely builds a sense of community for the school and raises aware-

Zach Gold, a member of the Associated Student Body that helped out in the Walk, when asked about his take on the fundraiser, had only positive things to say about it.

“It was so much fun to walk with my friends. Walk for Life is basically a tradition at Peninsula High School,” Gold said It is incredible how impactful this walk is towards the support of cancer research and the fundraiser event definitely proves how Panthers do indeed Walk for Life.

Land Conservancy Feeding The World – Of Animals

• Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy removes invasive, non-native acacia and donates clippings to feed Los Angeles Zoo animals from Australia and Africa.

By Mary Scott No one knows exactly how acacia, a tree native to Australia and Africa, was introduced on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, but it grows in abundance in the Alta Vicente Reserve in Rancho Palos Verdes.

That is until now.

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy, with the help from AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps’ Silver Team 2 volunteers, is removing the acacia to make way for its latest native habitat restoration project in the 50-acre reserve. But instead of mulching the clippings, or worse, hauling the clippings away in a dumpster,

the Land Conservancy is giving the acacia to the Los Angeles Zoo, where it will go to feed a variety of animals, including monkeys and giraffes, who naturally feed on acacia.

“We always like to get as much fresh plant matter as we can for our animal collection,” said Jeremy Barlow on Wednesday, just after loading a truck full of clippings bound for the zoo. Barlow, who works in the zoo’s Animal Care program, added, “It’s great for their nutrition, it’s great for their natural behavior. A lot of these animals are programmed or wired to eat in a certain way, and if you give them grain pellets and hay, that may not always cut it.”

Astoundingly, acacia is found all over the Los Angeles area, not just on the Peninsula but also in El Segundo, where a natural habitat restoration project is taking place near the Los Angeles International Airport, and by Dodgers Stadium, Barlow said. Acacia does well in areas where it is dry and hilly, he added.

Unfortunately, acacia is invasive and it pushes out native plant life. “And the

PVIT Electric Car PV, PEN Surfers Charges Up STEM Share The Waves • Both the Palos Verdes and Peninsula High surf teams did well in league competition and have qualified for CIF playoffs which will begin this month.

• The PV Electric Car spotlights the STEM Symposium with new high-tech upgrades and a 40 mph top speed.

By Dean Porter Palos Verdes and Peninsula high schools showed off their brilliant engineering works Thursday, Feb. 25, at the annual STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) Symposium at Peninsula High.

Students have been working on their projects for months, some even for several years. Both schools had a variety of projects, including electric cars, rockets, architecture modeling groups, remote controlled underwater vehicles and solar powered canoes.

The one project that stood out the most and showed the difficulties and successes of engineering was the Palos Verdes Neighborhood Electric Vehicle or just the Electric Car for short.

The Electric Car, after only a few short weeks, has made tremendous progress towards completion.

In the last few weeks, the team has bolted on the rear axle, put in the control board, installed a new 20 horse power motor and attached both rear wheels with rear brakes (the original electric car only had front braking).

Conveniently, on Thursday, the team had just received their shipment of new batteries that brought the volt-

age up to over 40 volts.

The last two steps for the team will be to install the batteries, which can recharge at any electric car recharging station, and to wire the whole car, which will take a little under a month, according to team leader Kostas Nikolakopulos.

The Electric Car, when finished, is projected to hit a top speed of a little over 40 mph. The Electric Car team is working overtime every Sunday for about four hours or more to get the car running by spring break.

“Rebuilding the Electric Car has allowed us to learn to fabricate and test systems in a professional manner in order to build a running vehicle with the same performance and ability found in real electric cars,” said Nikolakopulos.

To check out the Electric Car or any other PVIT project, all teams work at PV High in the PVIT room from 2-5 every Sunday.

“We’re excited that we can be a resource for them,” Mohan said.

Added Barlow, “We feed it to everything from monkeys and lemurs all the way up to giraffes, and wide range of antelopes in there as well. We give it to kangaroos and wallabies on occasion — but they mostly eat grasses and brushes.”

“The weather is perfect,” he said. “It’s a great place to bring the kids and families, get outdoors, get some fresh air. And we also have some babies coming up as it is spring time. That’s always a nice, fun time to see things at the zoo.”

A Culinary Journey

Lemons Highlight Dishes With Unique Flavors

By Alexis Ferguson One of my favorite fruits or in other words a citrus bomb is lemon. Lemon is a great ingredient to consider when you are cooking due to the fact that lemon adds another dimension of flavor to dishes and can be used in savory and sweet dishes.

Some of my favorite dishes I use lemon in include lemon bars, infusing water in lemon, lemon salmon, dressings and vinaigrettes with juice and zest.

Lemon is native to Asia and Northeast India and is a cross between a sour orange and a citron. Lemons are sour as they contain about 6 percent of citric acid.

To many people lemons are sour and don’t prefer cooking with lemons.

In my opinion, lemons brighten up the dish and bring out the other ingredients in the dish and make those ingredients shine.

One of my favorite types of dessert are desserts that are sour but are also sweet. The first thing that pops in my mind when I think of sour and sweet are lemon bars. Lemon bars are so simple and easy to make and are a perfect dessert for spring.

The sweet part of the lemon bar is the flaky, sweet, and crumbly crust. The sour part is the filling with the lemon that sits on top of the crust. The crust and the filling complement each other perfectly.

After dinner, I usually prefer to have a refreshing dessert over a dense and filling chocolate dessert.

A sweet and sour dessert is the perfect way to end a filling dinner. To take the dish to another level, I add a bag of Earl Grey tea to the crust and steep Earl Grey tea in lemon juice for the filling and now you have lemon bars that will

They are so fragrant. I am famous for my lemon bars! I made some this week to bring to my friends at school.

They love them.

As I said before, lemon can be used in both savory and sweet dishes. One of my favorite savory dishes is salmon with lemon.

Brennen Bates Earns Eagle Scout Scouts

• Scout builds extra large bulletin boards for equestrian center at Ernie Howlett Park.

The members of Boy Scout Troop #191 in Redondo Beach announced that Brennen Bates has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.

Bates is currently a senior at Peninsula High School.

He is a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, and the California Scholarship Federation. Bates has earned three Presidential Volunteer Service Awards and enjoyed many years participating in the Palos Verdes Assembly.

Bates is also an accomplished musician, with 45 songs on iTunes. He is a vocalist and also plays the bass guitar.

Over the past 2 years, he has performed in 75 concerts. He is currently a member of the alternative rock band, Weathers, which is working with Warner/Chappell Music on a new album and national tour.

Bates has completed his Eagle project, which consists of three oversized equestrian bulletin boards for Ernie Howlett Park, as well as Dapplegray and Chandler parks in Rolling Hills Estates.

The Eagle project included designing, fundraising, assembling and installing the bulletin boards, while over-

Each of these parks has benefited from the bulletin boards, which provide a centralized location for information for the various community members who utilize these parks.

I like to take a salmon fillet and take slices of lemon and lay the lemon on top of the salmon and bake the salmon. The heat from the oven releases the juices from the lemon and the salmon absorbs all the juices.

The lemon really brings out the flavor in the salmon and makes the dish bright and delicious. The great thing about this dish is that it is so simple, but judging by the taste, you would never think that the dish had less than five ingredients.

Sea King Baseball Set For PV Senior Henderson Named Scholarship Winner New Competitive Season

At the recent Palos Verdes High School Varsity Football Banquet, senior defensive back Giorgio Henderson was named as the recipient of the Mark Wade Choate III Memorial Scholarship Award.

The $10,000 scholarship was re-established and presented by Sea King Football Alumni and supported by the Mark Wade Choate III Foundation.

Henderson was a captain and a starting free safety for the 2015 Sea Kings who were Bay League Champions and CIF finalists. He recorded over 100 career tackles and was named AllBay League First Team.

The breadth of his teamwork, commitment, and perseverance were all cited as reasons for his selection for

the award named in the memory of Mark Choate III, the quarterback and captain of the 1986 Sea Kings.

Dean Decker, the President and a Founding Member of Sea King Football Alumni, presented the award and commented, “Giorgio is an outstanding young man who, like Mark Choate, combined his passion and focus into a compelling personal narrative in which Sea King Football played a formative part of his development. He is a strong culture carrier for Sea King Football and deserves to be recognized.”

• The Palos Verde High varsity baseball team looks strong with a roster full of eager seniors

By Matt Gilbertson Despite a new coaching staff, the Palos Verdes varsity baseball team appears likely to be a competitive force within Bay League.

With the start of the season just around the corner, the Sea Kings boast an experienced and formidable pitching rotation. Seniors Sander Alley and Kyle McElroy established themselves as effective relief pitchers last year. They were the go-to combination when Palos Verdes had to hold a lead late in the game.

This year, both pitchers look to make an impact whether it is out of the bullpen or in the starting rotation.

Senior Alec Abdalah will again look to be an effective starter for the Sea Kings.

Several key contributors from last year’s varsity lineup also return to provide a strong offensive force. Seniors Adam Fogel, James Latimer and Conor Wischmann should provide a strong presence in the middle of the order, and senior Joe Caparis will be behind the plate for the third year.

This year’s team features a large class of seniors, making up a majority of the varsity roster. Seniors Connor Buckle, Will Thomas and Bailey Reid, all with varsity experience, will return to the infield.

The Bay League should once again be a strong, with both Mira Costa and Redondo Union posing as difficult opponents to the Sea Kings.

PV also cannot look past the Peninsula Panthers, as the intense rivalry could play a role in determining each teams fate in the Bay League when the two teams take each other on at the conclusion of the regular season.

Sea Kings Girls Target CIF Championship CIF Soccer • The Palos Verdes High girls’ varsity soccer team will play for a CIF Championship today against Northwood High.

The Sea Kings overcame a 2-0 firsthalf deficit with a dominating second half performance to secure the 3-2 semifinal victory.

PV got two goals from freshman Sammy Randolph and the game-winner from freshman Janessa Groves.

The victory put the Sea Kings in the championship game for the first time since the school reopened in 2002.

“Once the ref blew the whistle, I was overwhelmed with joy because my team and I have worked so hard to get this far and all of our hard work had finally paid off,” said sophomore Jillian Arriola.

“After being down 2-0 in the first half, my entire team, including the coaches were ecstatic. We still couldn’t believe that we had won,” said Arriola.

“Our coaches were speechless and girls on my team ( mostly seniors) were crying because this was their last game ever at PV. All of the fans were stand-

ing on their feet cheering and supporting us the whole way during the game ­— and the boys soccer and baseball teams rushed the field and joined my team and me in our dog pile. So it was just a great moment overall.”

Sophomore midfielder Kaya Hawkinson said, “Going into the game we knew they had a strong forward that mostly carried the team. I thought we shut her down and denied her from scoring.

“Being down 2-0 in the half was tough but a 2-0 lead is one of the most dangerous scores in soccer because if you score one goal you’re back into the game and have momentum going forward,” Hawkinson said.

Peninsula’s CIF Run Ends In PK Shootout CIF Soccer • Panthers reach CIF quarterfinals but fall in penalty kicks after going 1-1 through regulation and overtime.

By Jack Grimes Palos Verdes Peninsula and Warren high schools went to overtime to settle the boys varsity CIF playoff soccer game at Peninsula last week, with the Warren Bears winning in a penalty kick shootout.

Both teams scored a goal late in the second half to force the overtime and eventually the shootout, which Warren won, 3-1.

The game was intense throughout, with both squads showing the talent that got their teams deep into the playoffs.

The first half was a defensive battle, as neither team was able to find the back of the net. Warren appeared to have the upper hand for the majority of the half, but Peninsula had a few scoring chances but were unable to convert as the first half came to a close.

In goal, Marco Merola played extremely well for the Panthers, as he was able to shut out Warren for most of the game.

Dodgers and pitcher Cameron Schneider picked up their first win of the season over the Athletics last week.

• Pony League action quickens with the start of mid-week games and the annual timechange next week.

The first mid-week game of the season was a well-played, 2-1, win for the Rays over the Mets at Ernie Howlett Park Monday.

The Dodgers moved into first place with a 7-3 win over the Pirates Tuesday and will face the Yankees today at Ernie Howlett Park.

With the Dodgers losing the first game of the season against the Red Sox, there will be no undefeated team this season and as of press time, no home runs have been hit.

For Peninsula, juniors Hunter Walsh and Connor Veyrasset both made several impressive moves to give the Panthers scoring opportunities, but Warren’s defense thwarted every attempt.

Senior goalie Marco Merola had a great season for the young Panthers. goal, as they kicked a loose ball just outside the outstretched hands of the diving Merola.

It seemed like all hope was lost for the Panthers until Adam Reece scored a goal with just minutes left in the game when Peninsula went on an allout attack.

The second half then ended and both teams huddled to prepare for overtime.

The two overtime periods were relatively uneventful, as neither team had many chances to score. Captain David Friebe made several great plays on defense to prevent the Bears from scoring a goal. This resulted in a penalty kick shootout to decide the winner of the game.

Warren dominated in the penalty kick shootout, making 3 of its kicks to Peninsula’s 1. For the Panthers, Walsh, Kyle Adams, Reece Tretheway and Friebe all took penalty kicks, with only Adams being able to put his in the goal.

Even though Warren got to storm the field in celebration after Friebe missed his kick, the Panthers played their hearts out throughout the game and the entire CIF Playoffs. The team made it farther than anyone expected.

After the game, Friebe was disappointed but proud of how his team had played throughout the year.

“It really hurts a lot to be this close to winning but coming up empty. I obviously wish that our season could have ended in a different way, but I am never going to forget my memories of playing on this team,” Friebe said.

The Panthers, which had a great season, look to return to the CIF playoffs next year, as they have many talented juniors and sophomores who are prepared to take over for the graduating seniors.

Future Looks Strong . . . Junior

forward Hunter Walsh will return next season to lead Peninsula on another CIF run.
