Ice Chalet Salutes Hockey Heroes Ice Hockey • National Hockey League legends attend community event at the Ice Chalet.

By Asumi Shuda Ice Hockey has been a sport beloved in the world for a long time. It has sparked passion and love within people globally.

The sound of pucks hitting sticks and the swoosh of skates on ice has brought groups of people together around the world.

There was a free event on Feb. 25 that brought people of all ages to the ice at the local Promenade Ice Chalet.

Three retired professional hockey players came up on skates to meet their fans and have fun with the kids during the enjoyable activities.

The three generous players were Marty McSorley, Ian Turnball and Vic Venasky. They all had their own stories and advice to share with the future generation of hockey players.

“When I came to L.A. three years ago, I felt a responsibility to continue to grow the game.” McSorley said. “I was a small kid who loved ice hockey and being on the ice. Seeing these kids smile and being a part of the team really takes me back.”

PEN Holds Annual Walk for Life Community • Peninsula High student body holds 15th annual Walk for Life on campus and Highridge Park.

By Katie Hageman Cancer is a powerful thing in today’s world. It has the power to take away loved ones and create pain but it also has the power to bring people together. This unity is what happened at Peninsula High School on Friday, Feb. 24 at the 15th annual Walk for Life.

Students from all grade levels joined to celebrate the money that had been raised and to walk for a cure.

The event started off at the school around lunchtime when all of the clubs on campus went to their assigned tables, which had been set up around the school amphitheater. Students were able to buy food from different clubs and hang out for a while with friends.

filled with food, the amphitheater stage was filled with students waiting to donate their hair. Every year there is a substantial group of individuals who line up on stage after deciding they want to cut and donate their hair.

When asked about why she cut her hair, Anna Chang, a junior at Peninsula, said, “It’s very rewarding to know that

my hair will be given to a child who will appreciate it much more than I do.”

After the carnival part of the day, all participants in the Walk for Life event headed down to the track to attend the annual ceremony.

Unlike past years, this year a Peninsula student, Alex Fukunaga, shared his cancer story with the student body.

His purpose in speaking to everyone about the challenges he faced in order to ultimately beat cancer was to show that cancer affects everyone.

Family, friends, doctors, and countless other people can all be affected by cancer despite the fact that only one person actually has the illness.

In regards to Fukunaga’s story, Greg Osborne, a Peninsula senior, said, “Hearing Alex speak was interesting because it makes me realize how big of an impact cancer has on the lives of so many people throughout the world and not just a few families.”

PV Estates Set For Elections Vote • Palos Verdes Estates holds local election Tuesday.

By Frankie Reid March is a busy time for the City of Palos Verdes Estates. With two city council seats up for grabs and only three candidates running, we are due for a little bit of March Madness.

The three candidates fighting for the two seats include lawyer and PVPUSD dad Kenny Kao, incumbent Jim Goodhart, and ophthalmologist Dr. Sanford Davidson.

Kao is the father of three daughters (one attending PVIS, one at Cornerstone and one in preschool).

Candidate Kao, 45, graduated from Margate Middle School and then Palos Verdes High School, in 1989. He then

went on to UCLA and the Boalt School of Law, UC Berkeley. After law school, he served in the Attorney General’s Honors Program and federal clerkships.

Currently, Kao serves on the Planning Commission. He lives in Lunada Bay with his wife, Alicia, and their daughters.

If Kao is elected, his goal is to preserve parklands, revitalize the Lunada Bay Plaza, and preserve views.

Davidson, 70, was educated at New York University and received his MD from the State University of New York, Buffalo. He and his wife, Joan, have two children that grew up in Palos Verdes.

Davidson has also coached in PVBA, AYSO and PV softball. Nowadays, Dr. Davidson works as an opthalomologist in Redondo Beach and is a trustee for the Palos Verdes Library District.

Some things Davidson wants to do if elected include insuring parcel tax accountability, protect home values, and review cell antenna applications.

City Councilman Jim Goodhart, 74, graduated from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University and earned his master’s degree from LMU. Goodhart is a retired engineer and has served as mayor of Palos Verdes Estates and as a member of the City Council for many years. Goodhart has also served on the YMCA Board.

Some goals for incumbent Goodhart are to keep the life and beauty of PV Estates going, assure responsibility in our budget, and continue our terrific public safety record.

Voters will pick two winners on March 7.

Peninsula High Dance Setting A Higher Bar Dance • The Peninsula’s Varsity Dance has been growing as a team for the past several years.

By Lily Sha The team consists of 25 members and competes against other South Bay high schools throughout their six-competition season. This year the Varsity Dance girls and boy have been having their best year yet.

The team recently competed at Corona High School against schools from Poway, Valencia, West Covina and Santa Margarita.

After 12 long hours of competing, the dancers took home many awards.

For the first time in Peninsula Varsity

Dance history, the team took home a first out of six teams for one of their dances.

The other dancers also placed extremely well, taking home a second and a third.

In the solo portion of the competition, one varsity dance member, Aimee Tan, placed fourth out of all the soloists - another first for the team.

Varsity Dance has three more competitions left in their season and are hoping for some more wins as they wrap up their season.

The team also has a showcase in May in the Peninsula gym so they can show off their moves to their friends and families

PVIS, RIS, MIS Compete At MATHCOUNTS Math • Peninsula middle schools advance to State after competing in MATHCOUNTS. Palos Verdes Intermediate School tallied well at the recent California MATHCOUNTS Chapter Competition on Feb. 25.

The PVIS Team and Individuals Matthias Yee and Collin Shiang, who placed in the top five, will represent the South Bay/Santa Monica Chapter and compete in the Southern California State Competition on Sunday, March 12.

The MATHCOUNTS Competition Series is a national program that provides students the opportunity to compete in live, in-person contests against and alongside their peers.

Created in 1983, it is one of the longest-running programs and is annually open to all 6th, 7th and 8th grade

students with the mission to promote middle school math achievement in over 6,000 schools.

The PVIS team is coached and mentored by retired math teachers Mrs. Beverly Mairs and Mrs. Phyllis Thom, and co-coached by Dr. Yutai Liu and Mrs. Shau-Lian Liao.

The Ridgecrest team, coached by Eric Hendrickson and the Miraleste team coached by Ben Kroon, will also advance to the State Competition on behalf of PVPUSD. All three PVPUSD intermediate schools sponsor the Math Club, which aims to develop interactive mathematical communication skills, raise enjoyment in collaborative problem-solving using mathematics, and expand appreciation of the diversity of mathematics and its applications through weekly enrichment sessions.

Panthers Study Everything To Compete Academic Decathlon

• Peninsula High students set to compete in a wide variety of subjects.

By Nina Li Peninsula’s campus has many different clubs and competitive teams that represent the school through their many achievements. Beginning three years ago, the Academic Decathlon team began training to compete against various schools.

This year, team members received 41 awards in total with a bronze trophy in the Super Quiz and gold and silver medals won by individual members.

The team is advised by MarieAnne Voegtlin and made up of many students.

The first team was led by captains Anna Farias, Chelsea Liu and Atul Jalan. Other members of the first team include Alexa Jones, Cheetah Zhu, Julian Anderson, Spencer Ma, Tami Ayatollahi and Luna Takamatsu.

They placed second among Division II schools and moved to 16th place out of all the other competitors.

The junior team consisted of Tyler Chang, Christina An, Yeji Cho, Irene Zhen, Tara Safavian, Madison Hama and alternates Kristen Lu and Erika Yamazaki, who all received gold, silver and bronze medals. The highest scoring students in Division II were Alexa Jones, Cheetah Zhu and Spencer Ma. The main competition is multifaceted, so the Academic Decathletes have various methods of preparation.

The team members recite prepared speeches every week and study mate-

rial concerning the given subject.

This year, the main focus was on World War II, and the areas they were tested on: mathematics, English, art, history, science and music all reflected that specific theme. They also read and analyze a selected reading book, this year the book was “Transit” by Anna Seghers.

Teammates also ask each other personal and academic questions that relate to the topic to help them prepare for the interview portion of the competition. They meet every Monday and Wednesday after school to study the material and familiarize themselves with the layout of the tests.

“Academic Decathlon (Acadec) has helped me come to appreciate the importance of communication and collaboration on a team,” captain Anna Farias said.

“In addition, because of the wide range of subjects we cover, I feel I have become a much more well-rounded person over the past three years in which I have been part of the team, which will help with my prospects beyond high school,” Farias said.

Members’ proximity makes it easy to bond with one another. Acadec is open to all grades so it can be a good way to meet people from other grades.

The friendship and connection the decathletes experience is unique and it makes every experience with one another special.

“I have more structure, and I am more organized,” team member Spencer Ma said. “It helps me relax from the stress of schoolwork, as I can always look forward to every meeting with my team.”

15th Annual Walk For Life . . . Continued from Page 4 After the students listened to Fukunaga speak, Peninsula’s choir came onto the track and sang, “I’m going to love you through it.”

The song was a great opening for the rose ceremony in which select students put a flower into a vase for each of the loved ones in the Panther community that have been lost to cancer and whose names were read out.

The last few roses placed in the vase symbolized all of those whose names had not been read aloud but who are suffering now from cancer or have already passed away.

Hand in hand with the rose ceremony came the presentation of the donated money. Approximately $50,000 had been raised. The money was split between City of Hope and the Cancer Support Community, each received $25,000 to put towards cancer research and care.

After the serious part of the ceremony took place, students took out their bags of purple powder, which had been given to them when they entered the bleachers.

On the count of 3, announced by Fukunaga, the students threw their power into the air and yelled “Hope!”

Once the ceremony was over, the walk began. Students left the bleachers and walked to Highridge Park.

They received beverages and snacks there and were able to relax again with their friends.

When asked about the event as a whole, Josie Fleming, a sophomore at Peninsula, said, “It truly was an experience to remember. Getting to hang out with all my friends while knowing I was raising money for something so important to so many people was something I’ll never forget.”

“This was one of my favorite experiences while attending PHS,” alumni frequently recall.

While key sections of this musical continue from year to year, current events are always included in the script to add relevancy and humor.

Preparations for this March 16 production began in January. More than130 hours have been invested in rehearsals, primarily after school.

In addition to learning the events of the American Revolution through song and dance, the musical builds teamwork, cooperation and persever-

ance among the students. They increase their oral presentation skills and self-confidence as they perform on the Norris Theatre stage for parents, siblings, relatives, fellow students, faculty and members of the community.

PEN Wins CIF Water Polo Title

• Peninsula High wins first CIF championship in girls’ water polo.

By Nina Li With more than 20 different sports, Peninsula High School offers a variety of teams that students can join. Among them is the school’s CIF champion girls’ water polo team.

The team scaled the heights this year with its first CIF title in Peninsula history.

The Panthers tied for second in Bay League, which qualified them for playoffs. They were able to triumph over La Quinta and Woodland Hills high schools in the first games and then dominated Canyon High for the title.

Making Peninsula History . . . Peninsula High won its first CIF championship in girls’ water polo with a 9-4 win over

Canyon in CIF-SS D4 final. The team includes Kiersten Hazard, Catherine Nguyen, Grace Knight, Rachel Rhodes, Lucie Abele, Meghan Mahoney, Gracie Edler, Serena Chen, Danelle Mora, Lily Hopkins and Kennedy Blackwell.

Looking For More . . . The Panthers’ Rachel Rhodes looks to pass to an open teammate during Penisula’s 9-4 win over Canyon in the CIF championship match.

The team, led by coach Albert Garcia, is made up of freshman through seniors who have become a family throughout the year.

Team practices typically last twoand-a-half hours with one hour dedicated to conditioning. This includes swim sets and leg workouts.

For senior goalkeeper Kiersten Hazard, these leg workouts include wearing a 10-pound weight belt and holding up a 10-pound weight ball for

10 minutes, or wearing a 10-pound weight belt while filling up, holding up and emptying a full Arrowhead water jug.

For the rest of the time, the girls pass and begin to shoot with each other. Finally they run through scrimmages, drills and plays.

“I knew from the very beginning of our season that we had the potential and ability to win it all, but I never really imagined that it would actually translate,” Hazard said. “It was such a surreal moment when we won.”

Hazard has played with most of the girls on the team since sixth grade and has grown to love the sport and her teammates. She finished her four years of high school water polo on a high note and shone during finals.

“I feel so blessed to end my four years of water polo at Peninsula by making history,” Hazard said. “I would not trade my experiences and memories crafted in the pool as a Panther for the world,” she said.

“I cannot express the immense pride I have for my girls, and how beyond happy I am to do it all representing the best school in the world.”

The team has many bonding activities such as team dinners and gift exchanges. They have team songs, and their teamwork is remarkable.

“The team is a small, tight-knit group and everyone genuinely cares for one another,” freshman Catharine Nguyen said. “This year was a wonderful experience that I will never forget,

and I will always remember each member of the team fondly.”

For the returing girls, this will not be the first CIF title they will win. They will continue to strive for greatness and be able to achieve more titles as the years go on.

“From day one I had a feeling our team could win CIF,” sophomore Rachel Rhodes said. “We have a lot of talented girls in the pool this year and each of us wanted to end this season with something to remember.”

PV, PEN Set For Fun On The Diamonds Softball Preview

• Palos Verdes and Peninsula high schools are set for another Bay League softball season

By Rachel Allen As high school softball season gets under way on the Peninsula this week, I had the chance to catch up with the softball head coaches from both Palos Verdes and Peninsula high schools. It was great to get the inside scoop on their 2017 teams and season outlook.

Entering his 23rd year as coach at Peninsula, coach Tim Hall is very much looking forward to this upcoming season. With 8 of his 9 starters returning from last season, coach Hall is excited

about his skilled players and the experience in the lineup.

Peninsula graduated starting pitcher Jessica Hay, now pitching for Colgate University, leaving the circle open for two seasoned juniors, Madison Denton and Phoenix Baez, to step into this season’s pitching spot.

In addition to these super pitchers and beyond the team’s big bats and strong defense, coach Hall feels the relationship between the players as a team is very important, and he likes what he sees.

Coach Hall talked about being fortunate to work with this great group of talented, caring and supportive girls. Coach Hall said he focuses on giving the girls a positive experience, working hard and allowing them to find and develop the

PV Kids Meet Hockey Heroes

. . . Continued from Page 3 had a tremendous amount of fun playing games and doing activities with their hockey heroes.

Although it was more than three hours long, parents patiently stood next to the ice rink and watched their children grin from ear to ear skating next to their friends and the inspiring figures in their lives.

After the activity session, a meetand-greet time was held with the hockey players who signed autographs and posed for pictures with their fans.

“These young players in this generation should not only focus on hockey, but their education as well,’’ Turnball said. “Love the game, perfect your skills, and have desire to reach the top. This is what I learned throughout my career.”

Venasky said, “Hockey is a sport to be reckoned with, but should be spent joyously and be fun for the player.”

Having an event like this take place locally means a lot to the children who always have wanted to

meet their celebrity heroes.

The fact that these accomplished individuals came and gave their time to be with these kids shows how devoted they are to ice hockey and to continuing the game for future generations.

This small event can inspire a child’s life in hockey. One day, maybe these children can look back as they skate on the ice and think, “If they can do it, I can.”

With a team culture like that and with senior captains Hannah Lyons and Keilyn Yuzuki leading the way, we can definitely expect exciting things this 2017 season from coach Hall and the Panthers.

On the other side of the hill, I got to spend some time with head coach Pat Fresch of Palos Verdes High, and to talk about his team and vision for the 2017 softball season.

While PV High is replacing six varsity starting seniors from last season coach Fresch, now in his 4th year as head coach, is very confident and excited for the season.

With the variety of new faces and the talent those players are bringing to the team, coach Fresch feels they will be able to step up quickly and compete this year.

Last season’s standout pitcher, Steffi Best, now playing for Cal Poly, leaves the circle in the hands of freshman Addison Kostrencich and sophomore Madison Tody. Kostrencich, a seasoned pitcher, already attracting D1 attention, is definitely ready to step into the role, and teams well with Tody.

The behind the plate leadership of Tess Carrier, PV’s senior catcher, and senior outfielder Alex Fresch, with her big bat, will also be a big part of this team’s success.

Claire Malit, PV junior, playing shortstop with an arm to envy, and Maya Mardesich, junior third baseman with a hot bat round out the talented squad for the Sea Kings.

Coach Fresch’s approach to coaching is “players first”, and, as he rolls out the season, is making the relationship between teammates a priority.

Coach Fresch says he will do everything he can to make the season a fun and positive experience for his Sea Kings team. He says what he looks forward the most is seeing his players grow in a happy and positive way throughout the season.

Combining coach Fresch’s focus and his players talents sure sounds like a winning strategy for Sea Kings’ softball.

After meeting these coaches it’s clear that we are fortunate to have them leading our high school softball programs.

Jazz Concert Coming To Peninsula High

Sammy Miller & the Congregation will perform with Peninsula’s Jazz Bands in a lively concert supporting the school’s Jazz program on Tuesday March 21 at 7 p.m. in the Kelly Johnson Fieldhouse at Peninsula High School.

The day before, Sammy Miller will lead a workshop for Peninsula Jazz students, returning to the classroom where he was a student 10 years ago, to share his love of music with the next generation.

Then together the students and the Congregation will play to a packed house in what is anticipated to be a standing-room-only jazz party open to the public.

A Sammy Miller concert is not a quiet affair. He mixes the traditional jazz songbook, 19th century parlor songs, and ragtime with the uplifting vibe of a New Orleans street parade.

“We want people to feel like they are not just watching us but participating. We take a deep responsibility to try and present something meaningful every night,” says Miller.

A grammy nominated drummer, songwriter, singer and bandleader,

Miller has become known for his unique maturity and relentless focus on making music that “feels good.”

After growing up in Palos Verdes and attending Peninsula High, earning his Master’s Degree from The Juilliard School he formed his ensemble, The Congregation.

The band’s mission is sharing the power of community through their music—joyful jazz.

While independently the band members have performed/recorded with notable artists including Wynton Marsalis, O.A.R, Iron and Wine, Joshua Redman, Lee Fields, Jason Moran at venues including the White House, Lincoln Center, and the Hollywood Bowl, together they create globally conscious music with the intention to spread joy throughout the world.

Baseball Season Officially Opens

Little League

• All four Peninsula Little Leagues held Opening Day ceremonies and began the spring baseball season last week.

Team parades, jumpies of various sizes and shapes, plus a lot of good food and great baseball games highlighted Opening Day on the Peninsula.

Little League T-Ball games to Major Division action takes place throughout the week and on the weekends.

Lucas Lees of the Rolling Hills Majors Blue Jays has already hit two home runs to take the lead in the Peninsula home run derby.

However, the season has just begun and many players will be swinging the bat non-stop for the next four months, all the way through All-Stars.

• The boys’ division of the Palos Verdes Basketball Association finished its winter season last weekend with championship games at Peninsula High.

The girls’ division will hold its championship games tomorrow, Sunday March 5 in the Peninsula High gym.

The best of the championship games was the 3rd Grade Division Clippers vs. Thunder which saw the Clippers hold on for a 28-25 victory.

Peninsula Basketball Ends CIF Run PVBA • The Peninsula High boys’ basketball team finished its CIF playoff run after three wins and a loss to Pasadena last week.

By Katie Hageman After securing wins in the first two rounds of CIF boys’ basketball, the Palos Verdes Peninsula High School team moved forward to play against the Mayfair Monsoons in round three of CIF Playoffs on Feb. 21.

The game was at home and many parents, students and faculty members came to support the athletes. Tickets

sales begin at 5:45 for a 7 p.m. game, but students lined up outside the gym well before ticket sales began in order to ensure a place in the bleachers.

Those who got in received a gold T-shirt with the phrase “Panthers #PanthersBringTheStorm”.

The Panthers scored the first points of the game. Lead by the scoring of Tyler Hazard, Jordan Gazdik and Rodney Devignes, Peninsula lead at halftime, 33-18.

During intermission, the cheer and song teams performed, as well as a small group of the boys from the choreo team.

Once these performances ended,

Playoff Time . . . Peninsula High basketball fans came out in force to support the Panthers in the last home game of the season. the quarterfinal CIF game resumed, and the Panthers continued to lead on the scoreboard.

participated in what is known as the Zoo Groove, which is a short choreographed dance to the song “All I Do is Win”. Students wave their hands back and forth, sway, and do some improv dancing.

Junior Makenna Toumaian said, “The Zoo Groove is a very cool thing to be a part of, especially when everyone is participating. It definitely helped to raise the excitement level even higher than it had already been.”

The crowd cheered wildly for their fellow Panthers throughout the game, filling the gym with positive energy.

Energy from the Zoo Groove and the cheering section heading into the final period of the game brought energy and high hopes of a win.

With close to a minute left in the game, the Panthers were up by 10 points. They were able to maintain their lead, and the final score was 7160 with a win for Peninsula.

At the start of the basketball season, over winter break, the Panthers won the San Pedro Tournament, a significant accomplishment, which indicated the team could likely make it far into post season. This is exactly what the boys did by winning the quarterfinal CIF game.

In regards to the tournament, senior Nick Frasso said, “It was a great team atmosphere and it helped us come closer together as a team.”

Since that first tournament, the team worked harder and became closer, which is a part of why the boys were able to have a successful CIF run.

PV Arsenal On Tournament Roll . . . The boys’ U10 AYSO Select team PV Arsenal took home the championship in two tournaments last month. PV Arsenal won the championship in the 2017 Hauptman Freeman Classic in South Los Angeles, outscoring their opponents 25-1 to earn the championship medals. PV Fire Burning Up Tournament Season . . . The boys’ U11 AYSO

PV Arsenal also dominated pool play and shut out Long Beach teams in the semi-final and championship during the 2017 Beach Classic in Long Beach last week. This represents the 2nd tournament championship for Arsenal during the month of February and a repeat of last year’s 1st place finish in the same tournament. EXTRA team PV Fire has started 2017 with two strong performances in BU12 tournaments. In January the Fire traveled north to Solvang and won five straight games in pool and medal play - finishing as Finalists in the highly competitive Santa Ynez Winter Classic. The hot streak continued for the Fire last month as the boys lifted the Championship trophy in Corona at the Pony Express Tournament by going undefeated over six games. The PV Fire includes Andrew Caoile, Michael Decker, Hayden Edwards, Nick Graves, Tariq Hassan, Vaughn Kissel, Jack Matthews, William Molony, Luke Nelligan, Tate Rioux, Patrick Roche and Nathan Yakubik. The Loudest Shot On The Hill . . . We heard the students who rushed the court at PV High when the Sea Kings beat Peninsula this year. And the Peninsula High Zoo has a well deserved reputation as loud and boisterous. However, all that high school stuff is pretty tame compared to the audio frequency of hundreds of Miraleste Intermediate students exploding in unison after the Maruaders make the first shot of the game against Chadwick last week inside the Miraleste gym.
