signed to teach good citizenship, character, personal fitness and leadership.

Having completed their time as Cub Scouts, they now transition into Boy Scouts, with both boys joining Troop 783 in Rolling Hills Estates.

Both boys additionally earned the Arrow of Light, the highest award in Cub Scouting, which is earned by Scouts who have completed the Webelos rank and seek to become Boy Scouts.

The Arrow of Light badge is the only Cub Scout rank worn by Boy Scouts, and many Eagle Scouts, at scouting’s pinnacle, proudly display the badge on their uniforms, honoring their full journey through Scouting.

The bridging ceremony, conducted by members of Boy Scout Troop 854 of San Pedro, featured the crossing of a wooden bridge, representing the transition from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts, elaborate costumes and live archery on stage. Landon’s and Matthew’s families, along with other members of Pack 166, attended to honor the boys’ achievements.

PEF Executes 1DAY100K Campaign Fundraising • Fundraising shortfall calls for new campaign to reach goal.

By Nina Li The Peninsula Education Foundation (PEF) provides financial support for every aspect of education on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Each year, PEF sets a goal to reach by the end of the next school year, and this year’s target amount is $3.1 million.

Currently, PEF is more than $100,000 short of the amount pledged to fund vital teaching positions and programs at district schools.

The projected shortfall is calculated

even after factoring in donors who typically give in the spring, funds that are coming in from events that have already

occurred and the assumption that they will have a successful fundraiser in their Main Event Gala.

Due to this shortage, members of PEF have come up with a campaign called 1DAY100K. Executive Director of PEF, Christine Byrne, has been in her position for the past three years and hopes that this campaign will motivate members of the community to step up and help.

“We decided to focus on a day of fundraising with a specific goal of $100,000 to help ensure that we can reach our pledge this year,” Byrne said. “We are hoping that all families can give any amount and make a big difference for our schools.”

Besides raising the amount needed, the goal of this campaign is to educate the community about what PEF is and how it provides support to each school

across the district.

Many students and parents on the Peninsula are unaware of the impact that PEF makes in their lives, but through these events and campaigns, PEF hopes to build a stronger, more personable connection to the many families in the district.

From students who participate in STEM activities and sports, those who visit the College Career Center and all the students who have a counselor, PEF is working behind the scenes to make sure that these programs and people have the ability to give their best to the students.

To serve as a liaison between PEF and the high schools, PEF has a high school ambassador program it launched this year to try to raise awareness about PEF’s work on high school campuses. Senior Liana Korotzer, from Peninsula High School, is not only one of the ambassadors, but also participates in activities funded by PEF. “PEF has raised funds for so many of the activities that I love, like dance, while also helping my teachers and school as a whole,” Korotzer said. “I am really grateful that our district is able to raise the funds we need from generous donors despite not receiving very much from the government.”

PEF is hoping the 1DAY100K event, which took place Thursday, March 14, inspired enough people to donate. In the past, PEF has struggled to make its pledge, and if it is unable to make the

goal set for this year, it will have to lower the pledge to the district, which will ultimately impact the programs and positions that we help support.

Along with 1DAY100K, PEF also has the Main Event Gala held in May and an online auction event from April 12-22 to raise money. PEF will also try to raise funds while giving community members the opportunity to win a Lexus or a year of dining for four at Terranea.

“I truly enjoy all of the amazing students, families, teachers and administrators that I have the pleasure of meeting throughout our community,” Byrne said.

“There are so many kind, caring, involved and supportive members of our community, and it is such a pleasure to see so many step forward and work together to make this one of the best places to grow up and live.”

PEN Volleyball Begins Season With Success PANORAMA Volleyball Palos Verdes Peninsula

• Panthers begin season with strong wins and look set for Bay League competition.

By Justin Kim As winter sports come to an end and spring sports start to warm up, the Peninsula High School boys varsity volleyball team kicked off its season with a win against Torrance High two weeks ago.

Last year’s team had an outstanding overall record of 24-9. But in order to make the CIF playoffs in 2018, the Panthers had to place in the top three in the Bay League.

They missed that chance with losses to Mira Costa, Redondo and Palos Verdes and placed 4th in the League. The season ended, however, on a high note with a win against rival Palos Verdes.

The Panthers still ranked highly in Division 2, and two of their seniors last year

currently play collegiate volleyball at Concordia Irvine and UC Merced.

Senior John Skoblar says that “Our chemistry has always been good because we take our sport seriously, but not too seriously, we always enjoy our time in practice and outside of the gym together making us a tight group.”

Many of the seniors on the team this year are very close after spending the last four years of high school together. Playing volleyball only adds onto the memories and bonds they have with one another.

There are many parts of being on a team that make it the most unforgettable.

Through working with a team, you learn the value of teamwork and communication, and make friends you may know for life.

A team also helps students to develop social skills and to learn how to work well with others in completing tasks. It emphasizes the individual role of each player, just

like an emphasis on a job in a company.

“My favorite part of being on the team is our pregame chant when we just get together and yell while someone dances in the middle of the circle,” said senior Josh Kahen. “We have team dinners and do team ‘peppering’ drills to help us get better while having some fun with our teammates.”

After starting out on fire so far this season, Kahen is feeling confident in the team and already his favorite memory is “... beating the prestigious number 1 ranked team, Bellflower, in 3 sets” this season.

The Panthers are currently 8-3 after beating Bishop Mongomery Tuesday to extend its winning streak to three games.

The team is excited and prepared for what it is to come this season and continues to work hard every day. Skoblar’s favorite part of being on the team this year is “Just being able to go out there and ball with my brothers.”

Boys’ Names Change With The Time The Name Game

Many boys go by names other than the one on their birth certificate, such as Thomas to Tommy, James to Jimmy and Timothy to Timmy.

And, eventually, most of these boys change that nickname again: Tommy to Tom, Jimmy to Jim, Timmy to Tim. So, when does that change come?

You’ll find very few adult men going

by Jimmy or Tommy. You probably won’t even find that many in high school. Most of the time, boys change nicknames in middle school or at the beginning of high school.

Most people would find it odd to know a 50-year-old man going by Timmy.

There are other names like this: Samuel, Robert, Lucas, Jacob, and many more.

Why don’t kids just go by the name on their birth certificate? It could sound overly proper to have a six year old going

by Timothy.

This tradition of nicknames will most likely go on for a long time. Don’t expect it to change anytime soon.

Peninsula Dance Named Grand Champions Dance • Panthers dance all day to collect another batch for first-place trophies and tournament recognition.

By Asumi Shuda Peninsula High’s COED Choreo and Varsity Dance brought home another batch of victories from competition on Saturday, Feb. 23, at Saugus High School.

This event took place with the West Elite Dance Co. (WCE) at the school in Santa Clarita. After the grueling 12-hour day of competing in front of a panel of judges against 18 other teams, the results were impressive and showed the amount of hard work these teams put into their sets.

COED Choreo varsity ended with a first place in All-Female, All-Male and Small CO-ED, as well as a second place in Large CO-ED. COED Choreo junior varsity concluded with a third place in Large CO-ED and All-Male. Last but not least, Varsity Dance culminated a third place in Small Jazz, Medium Jazz and Large Lyrical, a fourth place in Small and Large Contemporary, as well as a fifth place in Medium Lyrical.

Peninsula also won first place as Grand Champions, which came with a $1,000 check from WCE for their exceptional performances.

Because of Santa Clarita’s dry, desert climate, dancers at Saugus had physical difficulty throughout the competition.

Many dancers on Varsity Dance and COED Choreo had trouble breathing during their performance and were unable to showcase their craft to the fullest.

There was also an issue with the traction between the dancer and the gym floor, which caused many dancers to slip on the floor during their performance, creating discrepancies within the pace of every set.

“At Saugus this year, there were a lot of health problems because a lot of the [members] were getting sick, and since the air quality was very poor [in Santa Clarita] we couldn’t give our most optimal performance,” COED Choreo Varsity coach Leo Matsuyama said. “However, everyone worked together very well and we were able to feel a sense of unity within the team.”

Competition day was jam-packed with competitors running to and from the lock-

er room to cheer for teammates, squeezing in time to warm up and practice the sets, and changing in and out of costumes.

Finally, after hours of running around, Varsity Dance and COED Choreo sat in a circle on the gym floor to hear the judges.

Squeezing each other’s hands throughout the awards ceremony, the teams jumped and hollered after hearing their names being placed on first, second, third, fourth, and fifth place in more than 10 categories.

“I have been trying to [improve my

coaching] since 2016, the year I started,” Matsuyama said. “Teamwork, dance ability, endurance. We’ve all been working from the ground up to perfect our skills.”

Despite the difficulties at this competition, with the air and the gym floor, Varsity Dance and COED Choreo were able to persevere and perform to the best of their ability. The teams hope to continue working towards a top rank at Nationals coming up in a few weeks while enjoying what is left of competition season.

AYSO EXTRA Teams Hit Tournament Season . . . The AYSO girls’ 14U PV Fire captured 3rd Place in the AYSO Section 1 Extra Championships held on March 2 at Riverside Soccer Complex. After an overtime (penalty kicks) semifinal loss to Upland, the team beat Menifee in sudden death penalty kicks following overtime tied at 1-1. The 2005-2006 team, coached

by Ren Oshiro, ended their six-month season at 8-6-2 and now will continue into the 2019 tournament season.
