Softball and Pony League baseball have already started their spring seasons, and PVBA teams begin playoff action this weekend.

The middle school winter sports season is over with volleyball and girls’ softball next on the schedule.

The high school winter rivalry games are over as both PV and PEN send teams to CIF playoffs while spring sports jumps into action at the end of the month.

History Comes Alive At Peninsula Heritage School

• Peninsula Heritage School’s Fifth Graders proudly present “History Comes Alive!” at the Norris Theatre on Thursday, March 12.

The curtain rises at 6 pm for this historical musical based on America’s Revolutionary War period and presented by the students through song and dance.

“This delightful production is appropriate for children and adults of all ages,” relates fifth grade teacher Kimarie Lynn, producer and director of the show. “This is an annual presentation,” Lynn continues, “but each year we adapt some of the songs and other details in order to showcase the amazing talents of our individual fifth grade students.”

Local Sailing Teams Compete

Sailing Away

• Local Sailors Compete in Optimist Midwinter Championship.

Palos Verdes sailors joined 77 other entries in the Carrie Series Optimist Midwinter Championship Regatta, hosted by the Regatta Los Angeles Yacht Club over the Valentine’s Day Weekend.

The entrants came from as far away as San Diego and Santa Barbara representing 11 different yacht clubs.

PV sailors sail with either King Harbor Yacht Club or Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club.

The Optimist is an 8-foot racing

dinghy that weighs approximately 77 pounds, and is raced in more than 100 countries around the world.

Optimist sailors range from 8 to 15 years of age. Some start racing after only a few weeks of summer sail training. The more experienced sailors race in the Championship Fleet.

Over the weekend, the Championship Fleet of 32 sailors raced on a course near Angel’s Gate Lighthouse, at the entrance to Los Angeles Harbor.

Camp Rock Music Plays On The Hill Performing Arts

• Popular Disney Channel movies come to life in ‘Camp Rock: The Musical’ at the Norris Theatre this week.

Disney’s “Camp Rock: The Musical” will fire up the Norris Theatre stage now through March 1.

Based on the smash hit Disney Channel original movies, “Camp Rock” and “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam,” which starred teen idols Demi Lovato and the Jonas Brothers, the musical is presented by the Palos Verdes Performing Arts Conservatory.

A classic story of rivalry and power, Disney’s “Camp Rock: The Musical” opens with Mitchie and her friends arriving at Camp Rock, ready to spend another summer jamming out and having the time of their lives. But when a famous rock legend opens the new, flashy Camp Star right across the lake, taking most of the Camp Rock staff and even some of the campers - everything changes.

With the very existence of Camp Rock hanging in the balance, the remaining Camp Rockers must band together to prepare for an epic showdown against their rivals with a battle of the bands that no one will ever forget. “‘Camp Rock: The Musical’ is filled

with pure fun, contagious pop-rock music, and non-stop excitement, from the opening number to the ‘Final Jam,’” says Megan Lyne, director of the Palos Verdes Performing Arts Conservatory.

The Green Fleet, which is for beginners, raced on a course off Cabrillo Beach. The Green Fleet, with 45 sailors, showed great promise for the sport in general.

For the Greens, which sailed 8 races over the two days, coaches from the participating yacht clubs provided onthe-water coaching during the races to any of the sailors who needed assistance.

The winds were light on Saturday with a 4 to 7 mph breeze and warm, sunny conditions.

On Sunday, a bank of fog rolled through during the early races, but then the wind picked up, blowing away the fog with gusts up to 13 mph.

Locals refer to the inner harbor below Palos Verdes as “Hurricane Gulch,”

and the wind conditions lived up to the name.

Many of the younger Green Fleet sailors dropped out of the last two races on Sunday due to the higher winds.

The remaining Green Fleet sailors spent time between races furiously bailing. One or two boats capsized during the windy conditions, but learning how to right your boat after capsizing is one of the first things sailors learn during sail training.

Most of the Green Fleet sailed back to the marina at the end of the day, while coach boats towed in a few weary sailors who had had enough.

The Champ Fleet got a tow out and back from their coaches and took their lunch break on the water due to the distance to their race course from the marina.

Hello, Palos Verdes Peninsula Panorama readers.

Welcome to my column, Panoramic View, which will appear regularly in this fine publication in upcoming issues. I thought I would, in a few words, take this opportunity to introduce myself to you and let you know what you can expect to find here.

My name is Mary Scott, and for the past 15-plus years I covered the Palos Verdes Peninsula for another local newspaper, the Palos Verdes Peninsula News. (Maybe some of you recognize me from my work there.) My work also appeared in the News’ sister papers, The Daily Breeze and The Beach Reporter.

I spent my media career writing about local arts venues and restaurants, businesses and nonprofits, and libraries and schools, as well as pressing issues affecting Palos Verdes residents.

My favorite moments, however, were connecting with residents and sharing their personal stories.

In this column I will continue to offer a “Panoramic View” of the area and the people and organizations that call it home.

We’ll walk on the wild side with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy, and stroll through the shopping centers with restaurant and business owners. We’ll take in new shows at the Norris Theatre and local art galleries, and watch for whales at Point Vicente Interpretive Center.

Oh, the places we’ll go and the things we’ll see!

Track Season Starts Fast For PV High Indoor Track • PV High runners head indoors to compete and get ready for the spring track & field season.

The California state indoor track meet featured hundreds of California and Nevada schools of all sizes competing at Fresno’s Save-Mart Center on a 145 meter indoor track that saw Palos Verdes High distance runners doing very well.

Palos Verdes junior Duncan Reid, who placed fourth in the 2-mile in 9:34.83, and his teammate, Bennett Gagnon, a senior, who was fifth in the 1600m (4:26.11), both reached the podium.

In the girls 1600m, senior Cassidy Webber of PV won her heat in 5:18.38, good for 12th place overall.

The Palos Verdes relay teams all ran well. Jacquelyn Smith, Anna Pruter,

Camille Hines and Webber were third in the 4x800m relay in 9:44.16, behind Oaks Christian and Great Oak. The Sea Kings posted the fourth fastest time in state meet history.

The boys 4x800m relay team followed it up with a fourth place showing. The team of Rob Franklin, Adam Berger, Gagnon and Jake Cohen ran 8:19.47.

The PV girls, all distance runners, also finished fourth in the sprint medley relay with Smith, Pruter, Morgan Irish and Hines running 3:51.91.

Coach Brian Shapiro’s Sea Kings open the outdoor track season March 3 when they host Saugus, followed by the PV Invitational March 7, featuring hundreds of schools from throughout Southern California.

Panthers Go East For Model U.N. Experience

• Peninsula High Model United Nations team enjoys East Coast experience at the Georgetown University MUN Conference last weekend.

The highlights of the trip were a meeting with Congressman Ted Lieu prior to the Opening of the 56th annual Georgetown MUN Conference, and a visit to the Greek Embassy.

In addition, the team enjoyed catching up with Peninsula High graduate and Georgetown student Bethan Sanders. Sanders serves as Under-Secretary General at Georgetown, serves

as a White House Intern and is a Secretariat Member of the North American Independent Model United Nations.

Recently the Peninsula High MUN team did a great job at the Surf City conference at Huntington Beach High School and won several awards.

The 25 student delegate team was advised by Ben Meyers. Standout students and awards - Commendations Award: Will Abele, Bobby Jones, Nic Wainright and Ben Zuercher. Outstanding Delegate Award: Rebecca Mu. Research Award: Suha Ahsan and Deeksha Chaturevedi.

PV Academic Decathlon Team Hits Metal Jackpot . . . The Palos Verdes

High School Academic Decathlon Team has won its share of metals in its six years of competition, but nothing like what they accomplished recently in L.A. County competition. The Sea Kings brought home 31 medals. Team captain Kevin Hsu set the all-time school record with his scores and placed first in the Super Quiz. The team won a Most Improved School Award (+6,958.9 points) and placed as the 20th best team in the county. The team includes Honors: Kevin Hsu, Nicole Mar and Jae Ho Yoon. Scholastic: Noah Feingold and Joseph Badagliacca. Varsity: Albert Centofante and Tad Kasai. Supporters: Jonathan Qian and Justin Hyunwoo Lee. Season Stats: 20th Overall (30,655.9 points). 3rd Most Improved (+6,958.9 points) 1st Place in Super Quiz (1350.0 points). 8 Golds, 6 Silvers + 8 Silvers for Super Quiz 2nd Place 9 Bronze Medals.

Peninsula High Math Team Extends Competition Lead Scholarship

• Peninsula High math team maintains first place in Bay Math League.

The Panther Math Team attended Bay Math League Meet 3 at Long Beach Poly High School recently Team members scored a First Place finish for Meet 3. As a result the Panther Math Team increased its lead as they prepare for the final competition in April.

Boys’ Varsity Panthers JV Sea Kings Take Two From Peninula High Sweep Sea Kings Basketball

• Varsity Panthers sweep Sea Kings in boys’ basketball.

By Matthew Gilberston Palos Verdes and Peninsula competed in a matchup that lived up to the hype of a rivalry, as Peninsula came out victorious 50-48.

Palos Verdes looked to defend their home court last week, while the rival Panthers were determined to finish with a season sweep after an 11 point victory in their first matchup.

The Sea Kings were able to defeat Peninsula at home last year, and hoped that they could repeat. Palos Verdes hit the ground running, as they jumped out to an early lead.

However, the Panthers were able to quickly recover and limit the damage, preventing Palos Verdes from building an insurmountable lead.

By the end of the first quarter, the Panthers cut the lead to just one point, proving that this meeting would be a hard fought battle.

Peninsula took the lead in the second quarter, despite numerous misses at the free throw line that allowed Palos Verdes to hang within striking distance.

Palos Verdes went into halftime trailing 23-30, but responded with a strong offensive effort in the third quarter.

Senior guard Lucas Cooper had an impressive game, as he was able to drive into the paint and finish or draw the foul on numerous occasions.

Frosh/Soph Girls Compete . . . The Peninsula High frosh/soph team got a 38-36 win over Palos Verdes at home to finish the basketball season.

• JV teams battle hard with Palos Verdes High getting two wins over Peninsula this season.

Story by Tyler Patterson In the second matchup of the the Hill rivalry, Palos Verdes High’s JV basketball team came up victorious, 69-64, against Peninsula High last week.

The Panthers were looking for revenge against the Sea Kings after its previous, 53-42, overtime loss at home.

PV struggled in their last two games against Inglewood and Redondo, so they were hungry to end their season strong. Both teams were desperate for a victory and both teams played like it.

The Sea Kings jumped out on the Panthers from the beginning with their physical full-court defense.

The Panthers seemed a little rattled and were impatient on offense. Palos Verdes on the other hand ran their offense and found open shots. The Sea Kings were in control after the first quarter with a 19-13 lead.

In the second quarter, the Panthers played much better man-to-man defense and started getting a lot of steals. Panther sophomores Rodney Desvignes and Darren Jeong played aggressive on defense and forced 5 turnovers.

The Panthers started playing as a team towards the end of the second quarter and everyone was getting open looks. Kenji Shimada gave the Panthers a much needed spark in the second quarter, as the Panthers pulled to within four points at the end of the half.

• Palos Verdes boys’ Varsity soccer team defeats Peninsula, 1-0, in overtime at home.

The match was the final regular season match for both teams before CIF playoff.

Legendary PV Bear Quarterback Set For Mater Dei High School

Current Miraleste 8th Grader and former PV Bear quarterback Bru McCoy will continue his football career at Mater Dei high school next fall.

This past season McCoy was a member of the Inland Empire Ducks Midget Football team that went undefeated this season and won the AYF National Championship in Florida.

A running quarterback for the PV Bears since Flag Football days, McCoy is ranked No. 24 on the Class of 2019 Elite 101 and put up solid numbers this past season.

Sea Kings Girls Win Bay League Title

• Rivalry rematch between the Panthers and Sea Kings has the same result.

By Jack Grimes The Palos Verdes Sea Kings defeated the Peninsula Panthers, 3-1, at Peninsula to finish the season atop the Bay League with a record of 9-1.

The Panthers finished fourth in Bay League, as their record of 4-4-2 put them behind Redondo, Mira Costa and the Sea Kings.

As in all rivalry games, the tension in the air was almost palpable before the game started, for the two teams had been anticipating the rematch ever since the first game between them ended in a 3-2 Sea Kings victory.

Unlike the first match, the Sea Kings were able to dominate for most of the game, and Peninsula was simply a step behind throughout.

The Sea Kings showed why their offense put up the best numbers in the Bay League this season (58 goals for), and their strong defense (only 7 goals against) proved almost impenetrable against the Panthers offensive attack.

The Panthers’ Kari Schoettler was able to score a beautiful chip shot over the goalie’s head to prevent the game from turning into a blowout, but it simply was not enough to compete with the powerful Sea Kings.

Both Olivia de Moraes and Nikki Rosen provided goals for Palos Verdes in their winning effort. The Sea Kings’ displayed a variety of skills, and their cohesiveness and chemistry had improved tremendously since the first match between the two rivals.

The Panthers should not be dismayed with their loss, for even though they did not play their best, they have consistently displayed potential throughout this season and that will help them be successful in the playoffs.

Both teams featured an array of talented players who will surely lead them in their respective playoff runs.

The Panthers are led by arguably the best player in the Bay League, Kathleen Pingel, who leads the team with an astounding 25 goals on the

Panthers Win Bay League - Head To CIF Playoffs

• Peninsula High girl’s water polo team clinches Bay League title and first round home game in CIF playoffs.

For the first time in 10 years, the water polo Lady Panthers can call themselves champions, after a thrilling final week of league play in witch they beat last year’s league champion, Mira Cos-

ta, and perennial league power Palos Verdes.

And the Lady Panthers have continued to excel.

In the first round of the CIF SS playoffs Wednesday, Peninsula beat Righetti, 10-2.

According to head coach Albert Garcia, “Two years ago, we had nine girls and no pool. We couldn’t even field a JV team like every other

high school in the league. Now we are champs.”

The change really took hold just last year when nine freshmen arrived on campus. “Five of them saw significant playing time on varsity as freshmen and gained amazing experience that they used this season,” said Garcia.

The season began well for the Lady Panthers. They went 7-2 in December, including a fifth place finish (out of a field of 18) at the Benson Cup in Orange County, beating established teams like Mission Viejo, La Habra and Yorba Linda.

They started league play in January with victories against West Torrance and Redondo Union, and brought home a second place finish at the TYR Cup at El Dorado High School, where they lost in the championship game to San Diego power The Bishop’s School - La Jolla.

“The girls played their hearts out on that one but ran out of gas in the last quarter,” Garcia said, “It was their fifth game in 18 hours, and they showed there what they were capable of overall.”

On March 1st at 12 noon there will be a special introduction session for any interested 6U players and their parents to try pitching.

The session will give instruction, practice ideas and is open to all. The session will be held at Cornerstone Elementary.

• The Palos Verdes Peninsula girls’ fast-pitch softball league opened its season with the annual Parade of Teams during Opening Day ceremonies at Cornerstone School.

There will be 18 teams competing this season in 6U, 8U, 10U, 12U and 14U divisions.

The season will continue with competitive games through May, highlighted by two talented 14U teams that will also play teams from all over the South Bay.

Young Panthers Get An Edge On PV Basketball

• Peninsula frosh/soph team plays great defense at Sea Kings for a Bay League win.

By Tyler Patterson The frosh/soph basketball game between Peninsula and Palos Verdes did not feel like a frosh/soph game at all. The game at Peninsula had a varsity vibe to it, with the bleachers packed with fans from both schools.

The Panthers used this energy to fuel a resounding 51-33 victory against their rivals from over the hill.

Peninsula played its best game of the season, mainly because of their lockdown defense. The Panthers held the Sea Kings to just 17 points in the first half, and just 16 in the second half.

Nick Frasso played out of his mind in this game, putting the team on his back. Frasso scored a team-high 13 points and distributed the ball to his open teammates.

Frasso’s unselfishness led to many wide-open looks for other Panthers.

The Sea Kings were keying in on Frasso late in the game, so other Panthers stepped up. Freshman Aidan Kuykendall contributed with 6 points and Riley Bielke chipped in 5 points for the Panthers.

The Panthers played solid throughout the game and their swarming defense created havoc for Palos Verdes.

Matt Hashimoto and Nick Joke played stellar defense for the Panthers and forced many turnovers.

Peninsula’s aggressive defense gave the impression that there were more than five guys on the floor at any given moment.

The Panthers closed the season with an 8-5 record, finishing the season better than they started it.

As for Palos Verdes, they finished the season on a losing streak, although they played teams tough for most of the season.

• A number of teams finished the regular season undefeated or with only one loss, but history says the PVBA playoffs will be full of upsets and surprises.

The teams that finish the regular season in first place may not be playing on Championship Sunday.

The game was tight through the first quarter, with the teams trading a goal apiece.

Hazard’s game-changing ability was on display, as she started multiple counter attacks with precise passes travelling almost the full length of the pool.

“I worked hard on my arm strength during the past year, and I guess it started to pay off,” said Hazard. “It’s a close group here, and we all worked so hard on the individual areas of our games that would help the team. That was mine.”

In the Palos Verdes game, senior captain Natalie Hill was called for two quick ejections. One more and she would be out the rest of the game.

“Natalie is the in-pool leader of the team,“ said Garcia, “If she was out, we would have lost not just her ability to score, but how she sets the offense with her vision and passing

skills.”

Hill adjusted in the second quarter, and the Panthers took a 6-2 lead into halftime. In the second half, they didn’t look back. The final score was 15-4.

Hill had five goals, as did freshman Lucie Abele.

Sophomore Lily Hopkins scored three, and junior Hannah McGuinness and sophomore Julianna Yonis chipped in a goal apiece.

Kate Roan, Caroline D’Ambra and Izzy Barajas scored for PV. “Before the Mira Costa game on Monday, Coach Albert told us that we needed to focus and take care of business this week, and we did,” said Hill, “I’m proud to have been here and be a part of the entire turnaround of this team. It shows what a group of athletes can do if they do it together.”

With the first round CIF victory, Peninsula continues playoff action, hoping to reach the finals scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 28 in Irvine.

This back and forth attack continued for the duration of the game, and the game was eventually tied at 48 with under a minute to play.

Notable defensive efforts by both teams prevented any scoring until Babek was fouled with less than ten seconds remaining in the game.

Babek was able to give Peninsula a two point lead by making both of the decisive free throws, leaving Palos Verdes with only a few seconds to tie or

win the game.

Palos Verdes was able to move the ball quickly down the court, but a turnover in the game’s closing seconds ended the scoring threat, and gave Peninsula its second straight victory over Palos Verdes.

The victory improved Peninsula’s record to 13-13, while Palos Verdes finished the season with a 6-19 record.

Both teams will enter the CIF playoffs, and each team will hope to bring the intensity of this previous rivalry matchup into the playoffs.

Both of them controlled the ball and kept the Panther big men from getting good looks at the basket.

Fuchs and Matthews held two of the Panthers centers and highest-leading scorers, Sam Hill and Noah Riley, to just 12 points and 5 rebounds between them. Peninsula’s junior forward Mathew Miramontes was also unable to get going, as he scored two points for the Panthers.

Since the Panther big men were not providing much, their guards had to take over the game. Kenji Shimada finished the game with 17 points and sophomore Jake Milch finished with 11 points. These two guards kept Peninsula in the game after the third quarter, but their efforts would not be enough.

Chris Matthews for Palos Verdes proved to be too hard to guard for the Panthers in the final quarter.

He knocked down multiple threes to ensure no come back from Peninsula.

The Panthers finished the game with 24 turnovers. The Panthers tried to comeback in the final quarter, but the Sea Kings hit most of their free throws.

The fourth quarter was very highpaced as both teams scored a total of 27 points.

The pivotal game marked the end of the season for both teams. Palos Verdes ended its season on a strong note and beat Peninsula twice in one season for the first time in a while.

As for Peninsula, they lost their opportunity of finishing third in Bay League and fell to a 5-5 in league play.

Both teams are young, only five juniors between them, so both teams should have a lot to look forward to next year.

Senior leadership is also important for the Panthers, as Victoria Buda, Sherry Black and Kathleen Bumatay have all been key players for Peninsula this year. Sophomore Jennifer Burr has emerged as a consistent contributor to the Panthers’ squad, as she is one of their better scorers. Overall, these players will have to step up their games and carry the team to a successful playoff run.

After winning the Bay League title, the Sea Kings obtained an automatic playoff birth and a fourth seed in the CIF playoffs. They will play Corona in their first playoff game.

The Panthers, on the other hand, got into the CIF playoffs with an atlarge bid and will play first seeded Oaks Christian High School in the first round.

The Peninsula Panthers girls’ JV team lost to rival Palos Verdes in a close, 2-1, game at home. Both teams played hard, but the Panthers were unable to steal the game away from the Sea Kings. Look to see these girls contributing on the varsity teams next year.

Girls Frosh/Soph Teams Battle

The girls soccer Frosh/Soph teams from both Peninsula and Palos Verdes provided tough competition for each other in their last game of the year.

Both teams showed improvement over the course of the season and will look to help out the JV and Varsity teams in the future.

• The spring baseball season is underway at George Allen Field and Ernie Howlett Park.

Baseball is back on the Peninsula with the Red Sox scoring a 15-5 win over the Dodgers in the first game of the 2015 PVP Pony League season on Feb. 7 at Ernie Howlett Park.

Ten teams with players from all over the Peninsula and the South Bay will compete to play in the Pony League championship on June 6.

All teams have played one game going into today’s contests. At Ernie Howlett Park today the Diamondbacks will face the Pirates and the Red Sox and will play the Mets.

Next week the Athletics will face the Mets at George Allen Field.

Winter Sports Season Ends For Middle Schools

• Peninsula middle schools competing in basketball and soccer in the South Bay League will now switch over to spring sports.

By Frankie Reid PVIS finished the boys’ soccer season as King of the Hill Champions with a 2-0 win over Miraleste and a 1-1 tie with Ridgecrest.

Shawn Razipour led the Sea Kings defense, and Derek Roah proved to be a strong sub throughout the season.

The Sea King forwards were led by Dominic Firmani.

Against Ridgecrest the match started slowly with the score 0-0 at halftime.

PVIS took a 1-0 lead after about 15 minutes into the second half with a wicked shot from Shane Rodriguez sent the ball into the back of the net.

Kevin Rahman, who scored three goals in previous games, came on to the field but couldn’t get past the defense of Ridgecrest.

Five minutes later a goal by Augustine Bae of Ridgecrest tied up the game at one. The game ended is a draw, but was enough for PVIS to win King of the Hill and defend its title as champion.

The PVIS boys’ "A" basketball team rallied from 12 points down late in the second half to defeat Ridgecrest, 42-40,, on a last second three-point shot by Jack Engstrom.

PVIS boys’ "B" team defeated Ridgecrest in an exciting overtime finish. The Sea King "B" team had only one loss during season and beat Ridgecrest on a 3-point shot by Dylan Hassanzai.

PV Elite Continue Championship Run AYSO Extra

• Palos Verdes Region 10 teams continue to have success in tournament action.

After winning the Pony Express Championship U10 Division, the AYSO boys’ U9 PV Elite Extra team won the season-ending Extra playoffs by beating North Torrance 11-0, PV Fire Extra 5-2 and San Pedro Pirates Extra 4-1.

This is the 2nd annual Hauptman Freeman Classic Tournament and years ago Palos Verdes AYSO would help donate $5000 to South Los Angeles in order to help kids play soccer.

The Elite defeated U10 Santa Monica, 5-0, West Los Angeles, 4-0, South Los Angeles 6-0. In the championship match the Elite took on a very large U10 Beverly Hills All-Star team and won, 4-2, to capture the championship.

In the last two tournaments the U9 Elite have played they have won the U10 championship division. They also won the Extra championship for the boys’ U9 division.
