Sea King Math Team Competes For Honors Math Club

Academic Decathlon . . . The Palos Verdes High Academic Decathlon team

had their first competition at El Rancho High School. Advisor Louis Harley and the team is excited about their standing in the competition for this year. The next competition is set for today at USC. The team on their first day, from left: Jae Ho Yoon, Berto Centofante, Tad Kasai, Joe Badagliacca, Nicole Mar, Noah Feingold and Kevin Hsu. Academic Decathlon is a team competition wherein students match their intellects with students from other schools. Students are tested in 10 categories over two Saturdays in late January and early February: Art, Economics, Essay, Interview, Language and Literature, Mathematics, Music, Science, Social Science and Speech. Each high school enters a team of nine students: Three “A” or Honor students, three “B” or Scholastic students and three “C” or Varsity students. It is important to note that Academic Decathlon is not just for “A” students. The Academic Decathlon team is a new addition to PV High.

Last year, for the first time in over 20 years, the Sea Kings participated in the Los Angeles Academic Decathlon where they won “Best New School” for the Los Angeles county area.

The Sea King Math Club will compete at the American Mathematics Competition at the end of the month.

The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) puts on the national competition every year to identify, recognize and reward excellence in math.

The PV Math Club has been busy competing and learning more math.

Congratulations to these students on recent contests: Rocket City Math top scores: Greg Pailet - Calc/PreCalc, Angelina Norris - Algebra 2, Felicia Liu - Geometry. Top scores at the California Math League include Greg Pailet (10th), Julea Chin (12th), Edward Jeon (11th), Angelina Norris (9th) and Nathan Tsai (10th).

Drama Department took top honors at the California Educational Theater Association Festival recently. Kyra Johnson won the Senior Acting Scholarship, and Max Havas and Marina Teague won Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Scene.

Panthers Debate For National Victory Speech & Debate • Peninsula High team travels East for National tournament victory.

More than 600 students 97 schools and 18 states attended the Lexington Winter Invitational last weekend in Boston.

In Lincoln-Douglas debate (LD), Peninsula seniors Arjun Tambe and Akhil Jalan were the two finalists and because both debaters were from the same school the finals were not held and Tambe and Jalan were named cochampions.

This was the third time this year that the two students “closed out” a tournament. Jalan finished his preliminary rounds (and the tournament) with an

undefeated record. Tambe was third place speaker and Jalan fifth place speaker.

In policy debate, the team of sophomores Raam Tambe and Jerry Wang finished in second place, and the team of freshmen Brian Kong and Atul Jalan reached the double octafinal round (top 27).

As a result of their finish, Tambe and Wang received their second bid--and are now qualified--to the Tournament of Champions, the first Peninsula team ever to do so.

Tambe and Jalan also received bids to the Tournament of Champion in Lincoln-Douglas debate, which brings Peninsula’s team total to 16 — tied with the Greenhill School in Dallas for the most in the country.

Panthers Seniors Named Presidential Scholar Candidates Scholars

Oreo Unicorns On Campus . . . The Peninsula High Link Crew held a fun and

friendly Minute-to-Win-It competition at lunch last week. Each Link Crew Leader invited one of their freshmen crew members to participate in this activity that included games like Oreo Unicorn (a cookie stacking game) and Defying Gravity (a balloon game). Winners were given $10 gift cards to In-N-Out.

Peninsula High Field Trip . . . Last semester French 3 and French 3 Honors students made a visit to the Norton Simon Museum of Art after completing a research project on the impressionist art movement in France.

• Seniors continue tradition of academic excellence at Peninsula High.

Eight Peninsula High School seniors have been named as candidates for the 2015 U.S. Presidential Scholars program honoring young people for outstanding academic achievement, artistic excellence, leadership, citizenship and community service.

They are: Braeden Benedict, Carina Kan, Michelle May, Anissa Nishioka, Claire Pang, Thomas Sciaroni, Nicolas Wainwright and James Zhang.

The candidate pool consists of some 3,900 students with high SAT or

ACT scores or selection through the Young Arts Program.

A review committee narrows that list to about 560 honorees in the semifinal round. Approximately 120 students will be named Academic Scholars and 20 will be named Arts Scholars.

Scholars are awarded the Presidential Scholar Medallion at a ceremony sponsored by the White House.

Peninsula High students David Tang-Quan (in 2011) and David Wang (in 2012) earned the distinction of being one of the only two Academic Presidential Scholars selected from the State of California, and both traveled to Washington to receive their medallions and meet the president.

Panther Hoops Take First Rivalry Game At Home Boys Basketball

Coming into the rivalry game against Palos Verdes, the Panthers’ boys varsity basketball team was 0-4 in the competitive Bay League. But with their impressive 59-48 win over the Sea Kings, the Panthers may have received the break they need to turn their season around.

From the tip-off, it was clear that Peninsula was going to overpower Palos Verdes.

Peninsula’s senior center, Jason Burr, proved too much for PV to handle.

He was successful on the glass all game long against the smaller Palos Verdes players. Burr finished the game with 6 points and 9 rebounds.

Panther Girls Run Past Sea Kings At Home Girls Basketball

JV Sea Kings Get A Stop . . . Palos Verdes guard Sebastian Atashi sets his

Early in the second quarter, emotions started getting the best of the players as Tabazadeh and Sea King Adam Fogel received double technicals.

Palos Verdes a staged comeback in the second quarter, led in large part by Lucas Cooper. He was able to get to the basket with ease and finish in traffic.

Cooper helped the Sea Kings get back to a single digit deficit by halftime.

In the second half, Peninsula senior Kurt Milch decided to take matters into his own hands. The Sea Kings simply could not contain him driving to the basket, or hitting threes.

There wasn’t much of a game in the girls’ varsity basketball showdown between Palos Verdes and Peninsula high schools.

The Panthers controlled the game from the beginning and never slowed down in their 62-13 rout against their rivals.

The Lucci sisters, (Madision, Paris and Tiffany) were simply too much for Palos Verdes to handle throughout the game. The three sisters seemed to be everywhere on the court; they dove for loose balls, knocked down open shots and pulled down lots of rebounds.

By the end of the first half, the Sea Kings barely managed to reach double digits. They had only 10 points due to the swarming defense of Peninsula.

The Panthers’ zone pressure confused Palos Verdes and they struggled to get the ball past half court at times.

Sea Kings’ star guards Ariana and Karla Sunjara couldn’t handle Peninsula’s constant pressure.

High School Spotlight Sea Kings Girls Soccer Defends Home Turf Girls Soccer

• The Palos Verdes girls varsity soccer team is undefeated in Bay League play.

Story by Matthew Gilbertson The Sea Kings capitalized in their first matchup against rival Peninsula, as both girls’ varsity and frosh/soph soccer teams took down the Panthers on Palos Verdes’ home turf.

The Palos Verdes varsity squad came into Tuesday’s game undefeated in league play, sitting atop the Bay League standings with a 4-0 record, while Peninsula traveled across the Hill looking to improve their respectable 2-1-1 record.

The game proved to be a tough matchup from the outset, as both teams were held scoreless through the first half.

Senior Claire Stromme gave Palos Verdes the lead with a goal early in the second half, but Katie Pingel answered back for Peninsula to even the score. Both teams scored again, tying the score at two goals apiece.

Palos Verdes’ Natasa Eleftheriou gave her team the lead, providing the finish on a free kick taken by Vanessa Henderson.

The Panthers continued to battle to the final whistle, but strong defense by Palos Verdes held the lead as they won the game, 3-2.

The victory improved Palos Verdes’ record to 5-0 in league play as they

maintained their status as the top team in Bay League.

However, with five games remaining on both teams’ schedules, there is still an opportunity for movement throughout the standings.

Frosh/Soph Teams Compete

The frosh/soph teams were also in action at Palos Verdes High, and the Sea Kings showed an impressive allaround performance on their way to defeating the Panthers.

Scoring six goals, Palos Verdes displayed a potent offense as well as a notable defensive effort on their way to a shutout.

The rivalry matchups will resume at Peninsula High on Feb. 12, as the Panthers hope to rebound while the Sea Kings aim to continue their dominant play.

As the final regular season game, the next varsity match between these rivals may prove to be significant in determining the CIF playoff picture, as well as the Bay League Champion.

PK Goals Highlight JV Match

The Panthers-Sea Kings rivalry lived up to expectations last week, with breathtaking plays, high intensity and a thrilling finish.

Palos Verdes came away with the win, 1-0, but Peninsula come away with the result they desired: They can contend for the league title and will most likely go deep into the playoffs.

The game featured arguably the best offensive team in the Bay League, Peninsula, and the top defensive one, Palos Verdes.

While Peninsula’s squad is filled with talented players, the Sea Kings’ team chemistry and perfect cohesion on the pitch have allowed them to dismantle

most of the teams that they have played this year.

Even before the game started, tension was in the air, with players on both sides completely focused.

Panthers junior defender David Friebe, who has helped to anchor the defense as a starter this entire year, was excited and ready for his first opportunity to play against the Sea Kings on the varsity level.

A little while before kickoff, Friebe said, “This game is going to be a battle every single minute. Both teams have been preparing for this moment all season, and we believe that we can get this win.”

One More Time . . . Palos Verdes and Peninsula High soccer and basketball teams will face each other again next week on Feb. 12. Look for extended coverage in the next edition of PANORAMA on Feb. 21.

The Peninsula Panthers played a hard fought game against the Palos Verdes Sea Kings at home, but lost, 2-1.

Every goal scored in the game came from a penalty kick, as both teams battled to secure an important rivalry win that will most likely determine who will end up atop the competitive Bay League.

Both teams had been preparing throughout the season for this one moment. Apart from the obvious reason of the game being a rivalry match, both teams needed the win to take first place in the Bay League.

Dominators South Bay is forming club basketball teams for grades 2nd-8th grade.

The Dominators South Bay is a new premiere youth basketball program to the South Bay and surrounding areas. The Dominators program is known for their high level of training and competition. Our goal is the overall development of the boys and girls in the South Bay and surrounding areas. Our club is designed to teach youth the fundamentals of basketball, build self-esteem and teach the importance of team work through positive motivation. Although we strive to win, we focus on each child to ensure they have continued basketball development. We are now forming teams from 2nd-8th grade.

PV was able to hold Panther superstar Mickey Babek to only 8 points, with great defense from Jake Mungaray and Cooper.

The two teams were fairly even in the end of the second half as the Panthers could not close out the game.

Sea Kings’ big men, Miles Colon and Jay Lee Campbell, stepped it up in the second half and gave Palos Verdes a chance to win.

Down the stretch though, the Panthers didn’t make very many mistakes and made most of their free throws to make a comeback from Palos Verdes difficult.

The game was essentially sealed when Burr threw down a ferocious dunk over a Palos Verdes defender.

The Zoo, Peninsula’s cheering section, exploded after witnessing the highlight of the Panther’s season. All the momentum shifted to Peninsula after his throw-down, and they never looked back.

7th Graders Enter Home Stretch . . . After the end of the regular season games this weekend, a whole new season will begin with the playoffs.

Grade Celtics will be looking to move up in the standings this weekend and get a top seed for the upcoming playoffs.

Panthers’ Girls Win Big Over PV . . . Continued from Page 6 second half was worse. The Sea Kings only managed to score 3 points in two quarters and went scoreless in the fourth quarter.

Peninsula’s Paris Lucci had a big second half, finishing with 22 points and 6 rebounds.

A major plus for the Panthers was their bench play. Freshman guard Jenna Yamada came off the bench and played significant minutes. She scored 10 points and had 3 steals. Patty Hori and Rocelyn Williams also played well for the Panthers off the bench.

The Panthers improved to 4-1 in league play and remain in the Daily Breeze’s top 10 teams. Palos Verdes fell to 0-5 in league play.

JV Sea Kings Get Overtime Victory Basketball • The Palos Verdes JV team defeats Peninsula on the road in overtime.

Story by Tyler Patterson In the heated rivalry between Palos Verdes and Peninsula high schools, close games are always expected. The boys’ JV basketball game was no different as Palos Verdes came away with a 53-42 victory in overtime.

It was clear during warm-ups what this game meant to each team. Not only did the game have huge implications in the Bay League standings, but it was a game between two bitter rivals.

While the Panthers had home court advantage, there were just as many Sea Kings in the crowd.

Right from the opening tip-off, it was clear that each team was going to

rely on outside shooting.

The Sea Kings started off hot, and sophomore Chris Matthews was hitting three-pointers all game long against the Panthers.

The Panthers responded to Palos Verdes’ hot start, and jumped ahead to a 12-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Panthers have had a bad habit all season long of playing sloppy in the second quarter, after a strong first quarter. They did it again. Palos Verdes outscored them in the second quarter, cutting Peninsulas’ lead to two points heading into halftime.

In the second half, the Sea Kings failed to establish a consistent post game. The Sea Kings didn’t really need their inside game though because they were knocking down threes all night long.

PV Eclipse Wins A Rush Of Gold

PV Eclipse Wins Tournament Gold . . . The AYSO Select PV Eclipse (GU14 Select) won its second straight tournament in the top flight of the Santa Clarita Gold

Frosh/Soph Panthers Get Win Over Sea Kings

• Underclassman are the only Peninsula soccer team to get a win over Palos Verdes - so far.

By Jack Grimes The frosh/soph boys’ 2-1 victory over Hill rival Palos Verdes at Peninsula was the only Panthers team to beat PV in soccer so far this season.

The two teams meet again Feb 12 at Palos Verdes.

The game highlighted the growing maturity of the young Panthers, and it was the first time that many of them faced the Sea Kings in their high school careers.

This game featured superb skills on both sides as well as a newly found chemistry within the Panthers.

Peninsula was relentless throughout the game. Their hustle and desire was evident from the first kickoff. The Sea Kings were a tough opponent, but the Panthers proved they can play with and defeat even the best of the Bay League.

The Panthers were led by star forward Grant Vander Ploeg, who carried the team with two fantastic goals.

Vander Ploeg has been a consistent scorer for the Panthers this season and will surely be a contributor for the junior varsity and varsity teams over the next couple of years.

The game was extremely competitive and emotions were hot throughout. This led to a small skirmish near the end of the game between the Panthers’ Ethan Sommerstein and the Sea Kings’ Michael Mayes that resulted in red cards for both players.

After the game, Peninsula defender Cameron Keough explained the main reason the Panthers were successful against PV and their other opponents this season. “Our team’s chemistry is improving each and every game,” said Keough.

“For us, chemistry is everything.

Without it, our team would not have been able to win today’s game or any of the other ones that we have played.

We can improve on many things before our next game against PV, but our team chemistry will be the main thing that leads to our success.”

The game winning goal came from Palos Verdes junior Matt Pletkovich, who kicked a beautiful penalty shot just

past the goal keeper to ensure the Sea Kings’ victory.

Peninsula and Palos Verdes both proved that they are contenders for the Bay League championship. Peninsula shined on both sides of the ball, but were unable to overcome the two penalty kick goals by the Sea Kings.

Also, the Panthers were missing one

of their key players, midfielder Andre Dubois, who was out due to illness.

The Sea Kings ruined the Panthers hopes for an undefeated Bay League season by defeating them at Peninsula.

The Panthers must win the rematch on Feb. 12 at Palos Verdes to have a chance of fulfilling their goal of becoming Bay League champions.

The score was pretty even throughout the second half, but the Panthers were lucky even to be in the game.

They shot 32 percent from the field, their second worst effort of the season.

In the fourth quarter, with the score tied, the Panthers had a shot to win the game, but Shimada couldn’t get a good look from beyond the three-point line.

In overtime the Panthers got crushed, managing and to score only two points. Palos Verdes knocked down all of their free throws to seal the victory.

For Palos Verdes, twin brothers Greg and Chris Matthews and Sebastian Atashi all had stellar games. Shimada and Jake Milch led the way for the Panthers.

Black leads the Panthers with eight goals this year and provides much needed senior leadership. Along with Moshksar and Black, forwards Peyman Dalirifar and Zachary Phillips have helped to lead Peninsula this year.

Palos Verdes also has a strong and consistent team across the board. Junior Masaki Kishimoto is leading the team with 12 goals, and junior Greg Natt had 9 goals coming into the game.

Senior Zen Roten has also been a reliable player with 7 goals and 8 assists so far this year.

Underclassmen have also played a significant role with the Sea Kings, most notably Carter Mitchell, who has had 3 goals and 9 assists this year.

Overall, Palos Verdes features a variety of scoring threats and their talent was showcased against the Panthers.

The teams were equally matched in the first half, as the Panther’s defense, led by Friebe and senior Thomas Lai,

was able to act as a wall and shut down the Sea Kings’ high powered offense.

Offensively, the dominant Panthers had several opportunities, but they were unable to score.

The second half featured a momentum swing, as Palos Verdes began to go on the offensive.

A key play in the game was a questionable call by the referee that resulted in a second yellow card for Peninsula’s senior defender Blake Thomas, which forced the Panthers to play with only 10 men for the remainder of the game.

This proved to be the deciding factor, as Peninsula was no longer able to contain the Sea Kings’ attack, and Natt scored the game winning goal at the end of the game.

After the game, Black took some of the blame for the Panthers’ loss.

“I know my team relies on me to score goals, and I expect myself to be scoring every game. I let my senior teammates down today.” Black said.

This year, Black has been hindered by a lingering foot injury that may re-

quire surgery after the season.

However, Black responded to a question about his injury saying, “My foot has been an obstacle for me since the third game of the year, but I do not want to use it as an excuse when I am not able to do my job as a center forward, and that job is to score.”

When asked about the team’s future, Moshksar replied, “Our goal is to make CIF,” and, he added jokingly, “The last time Peninsula made CIF playoffs, I was in sixth grade still figuring out that girls didn’t have cooties.”

Clearly, the Panthers are remaining optimistic about their season and will not let this loss to their rivals define them or prevent them from achieving the rest of their goals.

Black was also asked about what made this Panthers’ team special and different from the past, and he focused on the bond and leadership from the seniors. He had nothing but praise for his teammate Moshksar: “Imahn is amazing. I love playing with him. I have no doubt in my mind that he is the best

player in the South Bay. He is our team’s quarterback, and all of our plays start with him. Not only is he an amazing player, but he is also an amazing person and friend.”

Black further emphasized the bond between the seniors by saying, “This senior group is special. We love each other and love playing soccer together. We hate losing and will come back ready to punish PV on their field.”

This game had huge implications for the Bay League. Palos Verdes improved to a perfect 5-0 in league and now stands in first place by themselves.

This was Peninsula’s first loss thus far in league, as they dropped to 3-1-1 on the season and are in second place.

A rematch on Feb. 12 may be the ultimate decider to see which one of these teams finishes the season atop the Bay League. Both of them will definitely continue on to challenge for a CIF championship.
