LBLL Opens New Field With Tournament

Grand Opening

• Lunada Bay Little League opened play last week on its new turf infield with its second annual “Glory Days” adult softball tournament and fundraiser.

Teams from as far away as Irvine came to compete with teams staffed with LBLL alumni and present LBLL board members.

In the double-elimination format tournament, LBLL (‘82) and PVHS (‘87) alum Mike McKay led his team through the winners bracket before falling just short of the title in extra innings to a local team captained

by Kevin Ding, resulting in one final game to determine the champion.

Kevin Rahman Earns Eagle Award Scouts • Palos Verdes Intermediate 7th Grader earns Eagle Scout rank.

Thirteen year-old Kevin Rahman received his Eagle award this month at a Court of Honor with family, friends and members of his Scout Troop, 134, Boy Scouts of America, in attendance.

The troop is sponsored by the Palos Verdes Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is the son of Jim and Angela Rahman of Rancho Palos Verdes.

He is the third member of his immediate family to earn the award, joining his father, Jim, and brother, Trey.

For his Eagle project he painted fences at Abalone Park in Rancho Palos Verdes. About 25 Scouts and other volunteers helped with the project and Kevin spent an estimated 200 hours completing the work.

Jim Rahman was scoutmaster of Troop 134 until recently when Chad Turner of San Pedro was called to lead the troop.

Only about four percent of scouts nationwide attain the Eagle rank, according to scouting leaders.

A Culinary Journey

Cinnamon The Ultimate Old School Food Flavor

This week for my column I have decided to inform you about cinnamon!

I love cinnamon because it is so versatile. Cinnamon can be used in savory and sweet dishes and makes dishes 10 times better in addition to adding much flavor.

Cinnamon can be used in beverages, non-food uses like perfume and anointing oil, and for savory and sweet dishes. Some of my favorite savory dishes that use cinnamon include Skyline chili, Greek pastitsio and chicken shawarma.

Some of my favorite sweet dishes include sweet potato pie, hot chocolate, apple pie, fruit compote, and cinnamon apple strudel with phyllo dough.

Cinnamon was first found by the Egyptians who used it as a perfuming oil agent and an anointing oil. Cinnamon then spread throughout Europe and was used to preserve meats during the winter.

There are two types of cinnamon: Ceylon and Cassia. Cassia is produced in Indonesia and has the stronger smell and flavor of the two varieties.

Cassia cinnamon is cheaper and you can sprinkle it over apple pie.

Ceylon cinnamon is produced in Sri Lanka and has a milder, sweeter flavor known for both baking and flavoring hot drinks such as coffee or hot chocolate.

Ceylon is more expensive than Cassia. Saigon cinnamon is another variety of cinnamon and is from Vietnam.

It has become a more readily available variety and is known for its more intense, sweet-and-spicy heat.

In Western cultures, cinnamon is used in desserts. In Eastern cultures, it is used in spicy dishes, Indian curry and braised meat dishes in Chinese and Vietnamese cuisines.

In Mexican cooking, it is used in stews, soups, and mole sauces. Cinnamon can also be found in spice blends such as curry powder, garam masala,

Alexis Ferguson and chai masala (spiced tea).

I did an experiment with cinnamon, and I tried a new dish by the name of noodle kugel. This Jewish dessert is almost like a white sauce and noodle baked, but noodle kugel is the sweet version. It is very interesting but has many depths of flavor.

It has cinnamon which gives you a feeling of warmth, the noodle are chewy and balance out the sweetness, and the eggs, sour cream, and cottage cheese make the dish very creamy.

If this dish sounds strange to you that was my first thought too - but try something new and you might like it!

Cinnamon is a great spice to add to any dish for great flavor and I hope that you know more about cinnamon now and that you use more cinnamon when you cook or bake from now on.

More than 100 Peninsula residents were in attendace as Mark Richard and his 7th grade son Anton facilitated a discussion on "A Father’s Work" and "A Child’s Future" at Palos Verdes Intermediate School last week.

Mark is a local father to three boys: Roman, Deacon and Anton.

Husband to Jennifer for 19 years, Mark currently writes for television, has authored several books including ‘House of Prayer 2’ and has had many jobs throughout his life. The audience listened to children tell their dads what they want to be when they grow up.

LBLL Opens New Infield With Softball Tournament . . . Continued from Page 3 Shaking off the fatigue of playing their sixth consecutive game, Kevin Ding’s team exploded for 13 runs in the first inning, but McKay’s team didn’t give up, and the teams traded big offensive innings before Ding’s team finally secured a 33-25 win and the title as darkness fell upon the fields.

Dan Woike was named tournament MVP for pitching almost six complete games in a row for the champions.

LBLL Board Member and tournament organizer, Damian Capozzola, was pleased with the event.

“It was a great day of competition

and again a four figure fundraiser for LBLL. We hope to grow the tournament to even bigger proportions next year and push towards five figures taking into account entry fees as well as other donations and community support,” Capozzola said.

LBLL Minors Coach, Jerry Lekawa, who played on the winning team said, “What an amazing day of softball…I can’t remember a competition so close between two very talented teams. A class act on both sides, and a class tournament. So happy to be a part of such a great community, and can’t wait to play again next year.”

Sea Kings, Panthers Set For Epic Rematch Boys Soccer

• The Palos Verdes and Peninsula High soccer teams are setting themselves up for an epic Bay League battle next week at Peninsula High.

Senior Class Set For Final Battle . . . Another “Battle for the Hill” between Peninsula and Palos Verdes high schools boys’ varsity soccer teams is set.

JV Sea Kings Defeat Panthers At Home • The Palos Verdes and Peninsula High rivalry extends to JV and frosh/soph matchups.

By Izzy Wilbur The Palos Verdes Junior Varsity soccer team hosted the rivalry game between the Sea Kings and the Peninsula Panthers last week.

PV came out in the first half and scored two goals, but before halftime the Panthers scored one goal. In the second half, PV scored again to make the score 3-1. Peninsula came back with another goal to get close, but the Sea Kings held on for a 3-2 victory.

PV brought the intensity and the energy to the game to produce a winning result.

“This game was much more energetic than past games. The team was more excited and worked harder than ever. It’s important to beat PEN because they are our rival school and winning shows pride in our school,” said PV’s Matt Salomon.

The intensity of the rivalry has raised the Panthers’ determination to improve their game before meeting PV again.

“We need to work on not giving set pieces and also we need to play better

as a team. We need to get to know each other better, and know each other’s strengths and weaknesses,” said Peninsula’s Cameron Keough.

With Peninsula’s 1-1 tie with Mira Costa and Palos Verdes earning an expected win over Morningside, both schools will need to get past Redondo before next week’s final rivalry match of the regular season.

In the first match on PV’s home field, Matthew Pletkovich scored for PV in the first half to put pressure on Peninsula to produce a goal in the second half.

Towards the end of the second half, David Friebe scored for Peninsula to tie the match, 1-1. The game went into overtime, but no goals were scored so the game progressed into a second overtime.

After 100 minutes of playing time, the game ended with the rivals tied, 1-1.

Peninsula’s varsity goalie, Marco Merola, who has only been playing soccer one year, managed to keep PV from scoring more than one goal.

“My mentality going into any game is don’t let them score. I didn’t feel nervous going in because I trust my preparation. We respect PV a lot and everyone knows they’re one of the best programs in the South Bay, but, that being said, I think they respect us too and knew we’d come to play,” said Merola.

Down In The Pit . . . The frosh/soph Sea Kings got a dominating win over the Panthers last week. The two schools will finish the regular soccer season on Feb. 11 at Palos Verdes High.

Entering the Palos Verdes High School gym on Tuesday, Jan. 26, and hearing the chants of “Where’s your football team?” from the Red Tide and “Where’s your Varsity?” from The Zoo, everyone knew this was going to be a Sea Kings-Panthers basketball game that everyone had been waiting for since the start of the school year.

Palos Verdes entered the game winless in Bay League competition, and Peninsula had two wins and two losses in league play.

Before the game, Palos Verdes Principal Dr. Charles Park said, “The PV-Pen game is a tradition that has been going on for decades, and I’m very proud of our coaches and student-athletes along with the student body/Red Tide.”

Cyberpatriots On The Watch At Peninsula High

RHP Huskies Set With Robotics . . . Students in the Rolling Hills Prep upper

school went to an FTC robotics competition last week. RHP teams did well finishing in 9th place and 14th place out of 24 robot competitors. The Huskies’ 14th place robot also finished in 8th place in individual robot scoring.

Year after year, Peninsula High School is recognized for its excellence in science and math.

The school offers many opportunities through clubs that revolve around these concentrations. One such group formed under the direction of Peninsula teacher Hassan Twiet is the CyberPatriot.

This program isn’t a local innovation but a nationally recognized program that inspires high school students to pursue interests in cybersecurity.

The program hosts several competitions yearly involving simulated hacking to high school chapters. Peninsula usually enters the competition every year.

This year, Peninsula’s chapter of the CyberPatriot program has excelled in the national competition. What once started out with 1,638 teams nationwide has dwindled down to 230.

And, in this small number of highachieving teams are seven of Peninsula’s CyberPatriot groups. One team in particular, the Meme Team, placed fourth in California. A remarkable feat considering there are more than 200 teams in the state.

January 29 and January 30 the seven Peninsula teams competed in the national stage in a pool of 230.

The results of the national competition will be posted later this month, but, no matter the result, the teams’ achievements have made Peninsula High School proud.

PV’s “Noises Off” Cast Honored . . . The cast of Palos Verdes High’s "Noises Off" was chosen to perform on the main stage at the California Educational Theater Association Festival. Additional honors went to Katya Forsyth for Best Supporting Actress and Terren Mueller, who received a Senior Acting Scholarship. Mueller and drama teacher Nicole Thompson were also chosen to be representatives for California Youth in Theatre Day at the State Capitol, where they will meet and perform for legislators and illustrate the importance of the arts in education.

The Sea Kings got wins in boys’ and girls’ basketball as well as girls soccer.

The boys’ soccer match ended in a 1-1 tie.

Panthers, Sea Kings Ready For Rematch This Week

Before tipoff Sea Kings coach Brian Edelman said, ‘‘the PV-Pen game is a big game because the kids and the fans make it a big game, but really it’s just another game.”

“For us,” Edelman said, “It’s important for playoffs and important for league results; it’s another one we need.”

Palos Verdes took an early lead with Senior Jay Lee Campbell leading the scoring. Palos Verdes had a 20-14 lead at half but that didn’t seem to scare Peninsula.

The Panthers came back in the second half to score 41 points. The Sea Kings managed only 17, allowing Peninsula to take the win, 55-37.

Campbell ended the night with 17 points and 9 rebounds for the Kings.

Senior guard Ford Carlson and junior guard Chris Barlett Mathews each scored 6 points.

Panthers’ senior guard Mickey Babek had 17 points for game.

Erik Moore said, “One thing we need to change is that we need to attack the basket more and stop relying on the three ball.”

Panthers coach Ryan Quinlan said, “At the end of the first half I told the boys they needed to step up and play. They played a little tentative and played selfish basketball. They have to play more team ball, pass, move, set screens, hit open shots, and that’s what they did in the second half. “ The Panthers coach said that “Going into our second match up against PV, we need to shoot; we need to take more shots.”

After players and fans left the gym, Principal Dr. Charles Park said, “Our team really hustled well, I thought the first half was really good and in the second half we probably need to focus on some defense. Overall I’m really proud of our team and the whole event. I have to give a shout out to Red Tide. They did a good job.”

The Sea Kings-Panthers rematch is Thursday night, Feb. 11 at 7:30 at Peninsula High School.

PV’s Pen Cooper is confident that the next time these rivals meet, PV will win.

“We need to stay composed and play more as a team, which involves more communication and connection from our defense to offense. If we focus on how we usually play, and to not let the rivalry game get to us mentally, we should have no problem in getting a better result.” Cooper said. “ I have a lot of confidence in my team and that we will be able to get this done next game,” said Cooper.

Peninsula played an intense game against Mira Costa Tuesday.

Within the first 10 minutes of play, Kyle Adams centered the ball to Hunter Walsh, who headed a bullet over the head of the Mustang keeper, making it 1-0 Peninsula.

The intensity continued throughout the entire half, with the Mustangs keeping pace with the Panthers shot for shot, until in the last minute of the first half, Mira Costa was able to come up with an answering goal, tying the score at 1-1.

During the second half, there were several Peninsula shots on goal, resulting in near-misses to a deja’vu game of the Mira Costa/Peninsula first outing.

Brayden Sauque-Young shot a left forward cross to Austin Wong, who passed to Walsh, who again showed no mercy to the Mustang goalie. Unfortunately, it skewed just shy of the mark.

Displaying his admirable skills, Ernesto Kurtz dominated the midfield, with Louie DeWitt-Hoeger showing that he truly does have wings to fly.

Marco Merola was once again a Hadrian’s Wall that could not be breached, aided by Colton Reynolds and Andy Levine as the outstanding back line.

This was a game controlled by headers and flicks, and the undeniable power of seniors Adam Reece and Tyler Torcasso who made runs down the sidelines on give and go’s.

When the game timed out, the score remained 1-1, leading the rivals into overtime. Both teams fought valiantly as the sun waned in the chilled air, but after an additional 20 minutes, the score remained tied.

At The End Of The Day - More Friends Than Rivals, More Together Than Divided . . .

Athletes on the Peninsula have been competing with and against each other in a wide variety of sports since grade school. From 4th grade PVBA, AYSO King of the Hill, Miraleste vs. Ridgecrest vs. PVIS, All-Star baseball to club soccer. The uniforms and teams change. The coaches and leagues change. The schools change. The games change. What remains are the friendships and memories that develop on the playing fields. Those things will last . . . for a long time.
