"13" The Musical Rocks The Norris Theatre Musical • "13" The musical takes audiences on a humorous journey through adolescence.

With a blast of high voltage energy, the musical comedy “13” opened Friday at the Norris Theatre for seven performances through Feb. 28.

The musical is a funny and touching coming-of-age story about fitting in, and standing out, with an explosive pop-rock score by Tony Award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown.

Presented by the Palos Verdes Performing Arts Conservatory, the production is powered by an all-teen cast and live on-stage band, and is directed

by Barry Pearl, who is known worldwide for portraying “Doody” in the film “Grease.”

The cast features Bradley Nolan as Evan, Adelaine Mollo as Patrice, Tanner Hickson as Brett, Liam Krainman as Malcolm, Ethan Hoffman as Eddie, Ashley Reynolds as Kendra, Kurt Lyle as Archie, Marley Estrada as Lucy, Leah Hohauser as Cassie, Leila Bahrami as Charlotte, Jessica Martin as Molly, Will Collins as Richie, and

Elijah Aziz as Simon, in addition to a talented ensemble.

The musical follows thirteen 13 year-olds as they navigate the ups and downs of early adolescence.

When Evan Goldman is suddenly uprooted from New York to a small town in Indiana following his parents’ divorce, he needs to establish his place in the popularity pecking order at his new middle school.

As the new kid in town, he is desperate to fit in, and get all the “cool kids” to attend his impending bar mitzvah. Every day he faces a new teen trauma: cell phones and rumors, first dates and first kisses, cliques, clashes and crushes. Evan struggles between trying to be popular and being himself, but eventually discovers that cool is where you find it – and sometimes where you least expect it.

“The musical ‘13’ is a hilarious, exciting love letter to adolescence, and to the elusive moment when the child in all of us embarks on the path to adulthood,” notes producer Jason Sluyter.

The composer and lyricist for “13,” Jason Robert Brown, won a 2014 Tony Award for his score and orchestrations for “The Bridges of Madison County,” as well as a previous Tony for Best Original Score for “Parade.”

He also composed the music for the movie “Urban Cowboy,” and wrote the off-Broadway hit “The Last Five Years.”

Young adult novelist and songwriter, Dan Elish, and film and television and stage writing veteran Robert Horn wrote the book for “13.”

Elementary Program ‘STEM’ulating Learning

Robotics, engineering, computer programming. Sounds like collegiate stuff, right? While it may have been the case in the last century, robotics and engineering is fast becoming a standard part of the primary and secondary curriculum in this century.

For years the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District has had a solid science and technology program at the high school level.

In fact, in 2001, the school district became one of the first in the nation to launch a high school engineering and robotics program.

The program known as STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) then trickled into the intermediate schools, where it is wildly popular among students. In fall 2014, the district rolled out an elementary program — thanks to the fund-raising efforts of the Peninsula Education Foundation and a generous grant from the American Honda Motor Co., Inc. — to all fourth- and fifth-graders.

More than 1,000 grade-school students are learning robotics, engineer-

ing, and computer programming. Crazy, huh?

“Students are excited about doing STEM,” said Bill MacDonald, principal of Rancho Vista School and the coordinator for the elementary STEM program. MacDonald came to the PV district several years ago with a background in science education.

When he and Montemalaga Principal Becky Egan learned Project Lead the Way (the developer of the STEM curriculum used in the district’s high schools and intermediated schools) had created an elementary program, they partnered with the district and PEF to roll it out in all 10 of the district’s elementary schools.

And, just like the intermediate program, STEM has become quite popular among students.

To begin, the students, who work in teams, are given a project, say like a catapult, with a basic and minimal framework.

From there, they research, design, construct, test, maybe fail, redesign, rebuild, and retest. The process is a handson learning experience that is much different from the traditional model.

“It’s pretty neat,” MacDonald told Panorama. “It’s a totally different learn-

ing environment than the traditional classroom, but it’s been really successful and really popular.”

The hands-on experience engages students in a way they haven’t been before, and, at the same time, teaches them science standards, which MacDonald said they are grasping very well, and the

ever-important “soft” skills of problem solving, creative thinking, teamwork, and perseverance. All skills necessary for success in any area of life.

A Culinary Journey

Pastete Is The Latest "New" Food To Explore

Over the weekend, I was given the opportunity to go over to a family friend’s house for dinner – the Steins! I was so excited because I have always wanted to try food from and experience other cultures.

What is great about trying new foods from different cultures is that you are almost taken to that country and you get a taste of what the culture is like and that can influence you to explore more cultures and to try new foods. Eating and traveling can make you more sophisticated and you can learn so much.

On the menu for dinner was a salad, rice, and a dish known as pastete or paschtete. The salad consisted of arugula, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and shaved ParmigianoReggiano (For the record, I have already told my mom I want to be buried in Parmigiano-Reggiano because I love it that much!!).

The rice dish is called adas polo and is a Persian dish with rice, lentils and chicken. Mrs. Stein is from Iran.

In Persian, adas means lentil and polo means rice.

This rice dish was served with dates and raisins a long time ago but people have found that sugar works as well.

Lentils are hard to digest so the sugar also helps with digestion in addition to taking the dish to a new level.

Pastete is a puff pastry shell/bowl, which is filled up with a chicken sauce.

The sauce is like a gravy with wine, which makes the dish over the top and also has chunks of chicken. Pastete is from Luxembourg, where Mr. Stein is from.

His grandmother used to make it on special occasions and always said that people from Luxembourg like French food but in German portions.

The adas polo was spectacular with the lentils and the sugar, which makes the dish so good that words can’t even

Alexis Ferguson describe. My friend Melina really enjoyed the rice due to the fact that she had her mouth stuffed with it and a plate full of it.

According to Melina, she was so full but the rice was so good that she couldn’t stop shoving her face with it.

The pastete was so flaky from the shell and the chicken sauce with the wine was so delicious that I am pretty sure it came from heaven.

I would love to grow up with pastete and to have that dish everyday.

I was so lucky to get an insight to what Persian food and food from Luxembourg is like. I was introduced to new foods from different cultures and I was blown away.

Attracting more students into the sciences, so they go on to careers in science and technology, has been a nationwide focus for many years.

Stage and film actor Pearl, who helms the Conservatory’s production of “13”, is also an award-winning director, and he recently paid homage to his role in the movie “Grease” by appearing in Fox’s “Grease Live” telecast.

The creative team for “13” also includes choreographer Keenon Hooks, assistant choreographer Sarah Maher and music director Shawn Alexander Bart.

The production is supported, in part, by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles

County Arts Commission and is generously sponsored by Clix Portrait Studios.

Performances of “13” are Feb. 19-21 and Feb. 26-28. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m.

Sundays, plus a 2 p.m. show on Saturday, Feb. 27.

Panthers Feel Right At Home In The Water

• The Peninsula High girls’ water polo team defeats Palos Verdes to qualifty for CIF playoffs.

By Dale Pyoun Peninsula High School is known for its basketball and girls’ tennis. However, the Panthers are continuously finding success in other sports as well.

One such sport involves playing in the water. No, not swimming. Water Polo!

This winter season, Peninsula Girls Water Polo has been faring well in the Bay League. In their latest game, the lady Panthers beat PV High, 5-1, at Peninsula, qualifying for CIF and knocking PV out of CIF contention.

Junior Kiersten Hazard says that it was all about the family bond among the players that has lead to such a good season.

And they are living up to expectations by making it into the CIF playoffs.

The clock timed out on the last regular season game for Palos Verdes varsity girls soccer team, and its victorious players gathered into a hog pile on the five-yard line of PV’s home field to celebrate not only PV’s 2-0 victory over their Peninsula rivals, but the second year of a Bay League title.

The varsity’s victory made it a clean sweep for the Sea Kings girls over the Panthers.

But after I found out, I was honored to be apart of it,” said Hawkinson.

Big Rivalry Win, Then Tough CIF Loss

• The Peninsula High boys’ varsity basketball team got a dramatic victory over PV, then took a tough loss in first round of CIF playoffs.

By Tyler Patterson Following the Panthers’ narrow victory against the Palos Verdes Sea Kings, the Peninsula basketball team headed to Cypress to face off against the 19-9 Centurions in the CIF playoffs.

The Panthers suffered a tough, 5148, loss against the Centurions.

The game was hard fought and eventually came down to the last shot.

Panther guard Mickey Babek had an opportunity to win the game for the Panthers on his drive to the basket with only seconds left in the fourth quarter.

Babek looked to have been fouled but there was no whistle from the referee.

Myles Jones and Brad Belshe of Cypress both had huge games to help catapult their team to victory. Jones hit many key buckets throughout the game and even showed off his range with a couple of deep three point shots.

PV Heads To CIF With Overtime Win Over PEN Girls Basketball

• The Palos Verdes girls’ varsity basketball team got a 43-42 overtime win over Peninsula last week to qualify for CIF playoffs.

The Sea Kings clinched the Bay League’s third spot with the one-point victory and hosted Granite Hills in a Division 3A first-round match up Thursday.

Peninsula defeated Palos Verdes, 55-45, before the boys’ varsity game last Thursday night, to force the match up the next day.

Softball Girls Open Spring Sports Softball • The big yellow ball is back flying at Cornerstone Fields with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Girls’ Softball League back with its spring season.

After a brief absence the last few seasons, the parade from Highridge Park returned this year to celebrate Opening Day. Decorated trucks with honking horns and cheering players were escorted by the local sheriff department down Highridge Park, across Hawthorne Blvd. to Cornerstone School to begin the day of celebration and games.

“We were all super-excited and pumped to play PV again after our first loss,” said Peninsula’s Alicia Choi.

“We just wanted to prove that we aren’t a team to be taken easily, and I think we did just that no matter what the score was. Even though we lost, we still thought that it was one of the best games we’ve played this season,” said Choi.

PV’s junior varsity thought they showed great improvement.

“We dominated the whole game, and we connected passes really well.

We really pulled together for our last game of the season. It was really cool to see how much we pulled together as a team,” said Sea Kings JV player Izzy Carr.

Peninsula’s JV’s also saw the game as an improvement.

“Our coach was very proud of our team after the loss. She said that we came out strong and continued to work hard,” said Peninsula’s Madeline Kim. “Few were upset with the loss, but most were happy since it was our last game, and we did not lose as badly as the first game,” said Peninsula’s Kim.

Cypress was really able to achieve success on the defensive end against the Panthers. Babek really wasn’t able to get any room to shoot his patented jumpshot and everywhere he went he was swarmed by Centurion players.

Evan Malone and Blake Godbold both stepped up for the Panthers late

in the game, hitting a pair of clutch three-point shots each and junior Jordan Gazdik controlled the post for most of the game.

For the Panthers this sadly marks the final game that the seniors will play.

The Panthers had a tremendous season and this last game will not define or take anything away from their successful season.

Cypress moves on in the playoffs and will take on Vista Murrieta next.

Grade School Students Latch On To STEM

. . . Continued from Page 6 “They are under-represented in STEM careers and also in STEM courses,” MacDonald said. “We want to make a change.”

PVPUSD now has a higher female participation rate (between 25 percent and 30 percent) than the nationwide average (between 5 percent and 10 percent). And it will grow as the district looks to expand STEM to all elementary grades, hopefully in the near future.

Another early success of the elementary program is that it is now feeding the intermediate school program, expanding it.

“Two years ago, fifth-grade students would go on into middle school and not know what STEM is,” MacDonald said.

“But now, every single one of them does.

And that will make a difference in getting

more students, more girls interested in STEM.” The next, natural step is creating after school competitive clubs, which should start this fall. The high schools and intermediate schools offer afterschool clubs that give students the ability to apply what they learn in class to real-world situations at regional, state, and national competitions.

“After two years of ramping up the [elementary] program,” MacDonald said, “I think we’re ready to start entering these competitions.”

The Miraleste boys’ basketball team used the three-point shot to break open a tight game and win going away, 45-31, in front of an excited and enthuastic home crowd.
