New Food Trends Roll, Dip Into New Year A Culinary Journey

By Alexis Ferguson Happy New Year everyone! At the end of every year, people like to look back at what they accomplished over the year and set goals for the new year.

In my case, I like to look back at all the food trends of the year and look forward to new food trends.

One big food trend I noticed this year was rolled ice cream. If you have never heard of this trend, basically cream and other toppings are poured onto a very cold plate. Then, they chop up the ingredients and make a flat layer.

Finally, they roll the ice cream and add toppings. I had to try this trend, so I went to 8 degrees Celsius in Gardena.

I ordered the key lime pie flavor, which is my favorite dessert of all time.

Rolled ice cream is very different from your typical ice cream. The rolled ice cream is very hard and, in my opinion, had less flavor. I love the creamy texture in ice cream, so not having that compo-

nent in the rolled ice cream was disappointing to me. The rolled ice cream wasn’t terrible but I think it’s hard to replace a classic scoop of ice cream.

Another big food trend I observed over the year was toasts. Avocado toast has been super popular for awhile now, but there are new toasts emerging. I do have to say that avocado toast is quite

amazing and the possibilities are endless. I love my avocado toast topped with picked onions, everything but the bagel seasoning from Trader Joes, tomatoes with feta cheese, a fried egg on top, or with balsamic vinegar. I saw that almond butter toasts and peanut butter toasts gained popularity over the year also.

One of my go-to breakfasts during the week is peanut butter toast with bananas. Sometimes, I even drizzle some honey over it and sprinkle some chia seeds on top. I have also seen people top their nut butter toasts with raspberries, strawberries, and chocolate chips.

Another kind of toast I personally like is hummus toast. Hummus toast is so easy and perfect for breakfast or a snack.

I like my hummus toast plain because I think the flavors are amazing as is, but you can always spruce up your toast to your preferences.

The last big food trend I saw this year were bowls. Whether it be smoothie bowls, poke bowls, breakfast bowls,

or grain bowls, bowls were a big part of 2018. Smoothie bowls are super refreshing for breakfast and are a great way to get your fruits and vegetables in. I love how easy smoothie bowls are.

I take about a cup of any fruit I like and blend it with half of a frozen banana and I have a smoothie bowl in seconds. I top my bowl with granola, honey, fresh fruit, coconut shreds, and chia seeds and my mornings are off to a great start. I love bowls of any kind

Top Scout And Local Troop Set Record Sales

• Local Scout troop earns title of top Boy Scout troop in Los Angeles area after raising more than $31,000.

By Nina Li Founded in 1910, Boy Scouts of America has more than two million members, including many in the South Bay. From elementary school to high school, hundreds of boys join troops from an early age and work toward Eagle Scout.

Besides learning about the wilderness and partaking in different handson experiences, the Scouts contribute to funding the program through selling popcorn.

This year, Palos Verdes Peninsula Boy Scout Troop 378 raised more than $31,000, earning them the title of top Boy Scout troop in the Greater Los Angeles Area.

In particular, one Scout, 13-yearold Gregory Monzon, sold more than $6,550 worth of popcorn. Named the top Boy Scout in the Greater Los Angeles Area, Monzon has sold popcorn for the past three years, but this year his sales were off the charts. In his first year of selling, he raised about $1,500 and the next year he raised about $4,200.

“I feel extremely {proud of my} accomplishment in selling a lot of popcorn,” Monzon said. “When the last popcorn-selling season started, I thought for sure I could not top my own amount the year before. So, I was elated about selling significantly more than last year.”

Every year, the Greater Los Angeles Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America holds a popcorn fundraiser. About 70 percent of the money raised from the sales goes back to support Scouting, and 30 percent of the profits fund

When applying to be an Eagle Scout, the Board of Review notes how the fund was distributed and exactly what the Scout used his money for.

“I think popcorn-selling really helps the Scouts,” said Monzon. “It teaches them about interacting with others and how to be more social with new people.

It also teaches them about being assertive and how to speak in arguments, debates and meetings.”

To sell the Trail’s End popcorn, Monzon went door-to-door and stood in front of local grocery stores such as Ralphs and Bristol Farms. For seven weekends, he stood for two hours every Saturday and Sunday selling his popcorn. Popcorn prices range from $10 to $25, depending on the size of the bag.

As the sales pile up, the Scouts earn prizes and have different incentives that motivate them to sell more. Once the Scout has sold $2,500 worth of popcorn, a percentage of the money goes

PEN Students Highlight Campus, Accomplishments For Open House

By Nina Li As the end of the school year quickly approaches, 8th graders from Ridgecrest, Miraleste and Palos Verdes intermediate school visit Peninsula and Palos Verdes high schools to get a feel for what their four years of high school would be like.

At Peninsula, the annual open house event is always filled with many festivities that include many educational events.

Members of leadership classes, such as Link Crew, ASB and Service Learning Leadership, become tour guides and man “hotspots’’ to help potential Panthers and their parents.

“I was a tour guide last year as well and the vibe that this day has every year is always amazing,” said Ari Cho. “I have an overwhelming sense of pride for my school and the students who come together everyday to make Pen-

insula the best that it can be.”

On a tour, the guides stop by some of the major spots that are unique to Peninsula. The Mock Trial and Teen Court room, the Jackie Prindle pool and the Bradbury Smith Art Gallery are all places that students love and have a meaningful memory associated with the buildings.

Throughout the night, students walk around the campus with their parents to visit specific classrooms and organizations that Peninsula offers.

From newspaper to robotics to orchestra, the opportunities that each student can receive are endless.

“It is really fun talking to all of the 8th graders who have not been able to fully experience what high school is like,” said Monet Shibata.

“I remember when I was an 8th grader and was scared to approach the hotspots to ask questions, but as a hotspot now, I realize how many people are genuinely interested in our school, and I am so happy that I can now answer their questions.”

Along with the tours, there are performances from different dance groups

and bands. This year, the athletic showcases have moved out of the Kelly Johnson Field House and relocated to be more central to the entire event. Every team captain and member presents the achievements they have been able to accomplish over the past few years.

“When I prepare for 8th grade night, I think about my best memories over my past four years and prepare myself for any questions parents have whether its about tennis or academics or the balance between the two,” said Serena Ko, senior and varsity girls’ tennis captain.

Open house is a great way for students to explore what every high school offers them and for them to visualize themselves as being a part of the campus community.

The night ends with Principal Brent Kuykendall wrapping up the event with a heartfelt message.

High school is a time when students discover themselves and their interests, and they should go to a place where they feel the most comfortable in their own skin.

My favorite grain bowl is from Superba Food and Bread.

The bowl contains kale, egg, almonds, brown rice, and avocado. The bowl is so simple but so balanced and perfect for lunch and dinner.

Record Popcorn Sales Marks Top Scout

There are also other incentives, such as recognition by the Council, a special party, drones, toys, and more.

Monzon’s father, Franklin Monzon, attributes some of his son’s success to the greater incentives given to the Scouts this year.

The adult leader of the troop, Philip Chung, recognizes Franklin Monzon, nicknamed “the Popcorn Kernel”, for spearheading the boys’ efforts. Each year, the troop leaders meet at the Los Angeles Council and discuss ways to motivate the boys to sell.

“I have to give Franklin a lot of credit because I think he has done an amazing job inspiring the boys to sell popcorn,” Chung said.

“That is really all we need: adults inspiring the kids to sell because, otherwise, they just think of it as standing outside supermarkets for hours and being a waste of time. But if you tell them there is a bigger purpose to it, they get motivated and they see the results. They realize the popcorn literally sells itself because people want to give to the organization.”

Besides the financial aspect of selling popcorn, there is a deeper , underlying meaning behind the sales, Chung said.

“We realize that most of the people are not trying to buy popcorn, “We are not trying to sell popcorn. We are trying to sell the Scouting program by having people buy popcorn from us, which keeps the program alive and gets Scouts interested. It is a way for

them to give back to the Scouting organization.”

“Boy Scouts teaches young boys different social skills as well as physical skills that they may not learn elsewhere. As they participate in the program throughout the years, their efforts and adventures shape them into the people they are now,” said Chung.

“I have never actually been a Scout myself,” said Chung. “I think for me, Boy Scouts was a way for my sons to get involved in something that had wonderful activities where they also got to learn things such as citizenship and leadership. Those lessons were part of the reason I got my kids involved.”

“Whether a Scout is outgoing or reserved, once they put on the uniform, they are all a part of the same family

who share the same goals as one another. The boys created a community of opportunity and growth, allowing themselves to learn while having fun,” said Chung.

“Gregory is kind of quiet and reserved in school, and he is not that into sports so Boy Scouts gives him a group where he has confidence and can come out of his shell,” said Franklin Monzon, Gregory’s father.

“He has learned good skills in terms of camping and first aid. However, I think most importantly he has gained confidence by working with other boys his age and can function well in a group. Sometimes he takes leadership roles, sometimes he does not, but he learns how to work well with other boys and that is the main thing, said Franklin Mason.

As today’s college entrance process becomes increasingly competitive, it is more important than ever for students to distinguish themselves from others.

One of the best ways to stand out is through a substantive, high school internship that offers real world skills.

A high school internship is a great way to gain valuable work experience and build important communication and problem solving skills. Colleges generally like student-athletes as they tend to be team players, demonstrate commitment to their sport and develop valuable time management skills.

During my college interviews I was almost always asked the same questions: “What do you do outside of school and what about sports?”

Thankfully, I had an answer. I had already been interning for two years at local technology center, PVNet, and I was a two-sport varsity athlete.

As I was already working on substantive real world projects, I had plenty of material to discuss during my interviews

and even submitted a portfolio to colleges as part of my application package.

The interviewers and admissions officers seemed impressed by the skills that I obtained through this internship.

Now as a third-year student at an Ivy League college, my experiences in tech-

nology has helped me land internships at leading companies over the years.

I will also be a research assistant this spring working overseas in a university lab dedicated to virtual reality and augmented reality.

What began as an internship has

now had a lasting positive effect on my life.

Early Applications Provide Early Relief College Stuff • Parents and senior students begin to prepare for life after high school.

By Justin Kim Before they know it, parents are seeing their teenagers becoming overwhelmed by the complexities of college preparation, including tests, applications and just trying to stand out in competing for the best schools.

A large portion of students just want the entire process over and done with so that they can enjoy the remainder of their senior year. And so some take earlier steps to do so.

Colleges offer the option to apply early to their schools in either a nonbinding Early Action or in a binding Early Decision agreement.

This is done by applying for an earlier deadline, which is normally a few months before the start of the next year, depending on the school.

The application process remains the same, with the only difference being the time allotted for the student to complete and submit their applications.

Early Action applicants are given a nonbinding response, and, if accepted, are given the choice to accept or decline the offer. Students may apply Early Action to as many schools as they want and are not bound to any school.

Certain schools, however, such as Harvard, Princeton, Yale and Stanford universities, only offer the choice of restrictive Early Action, which demands that if students apply Early Action to their school, they are not permitted to apply Early Action anywhere else.

Early Action results are released anywhere from early December to early February, depending on the school.

Colleges also reserve the right to “defer” students to the pool of regular decision students as well. This simply means that the application originally submitted for Early Action will be reconsidered later on with the rest of the applications.

On the other hand, in an Early Decision agreement, students have no choice other than attending that school under a contract signed by both parties.

Both options give high school seniors the opportunity to receive acceptances or rejections earlier than

the most common release dates in March.

All things considered, it is an excellent opportunity to make the parents proud.

There is also the option of applying to a single school in a binding Early Decision Agreement. This option requires a legal, signed contract from both parent and student, understanding that it is a serious commitment to the school.

Backing out from an Early Decision agreement can lead to consequences, and the severity of those consequences is completely dependent on the school.

For example, students who risk applying to more than one school in Early Decision agreements can possibly lose acceptance to both schools.

Peninsula High School senior Nina Li says that, “Applying Early Decision to any school is a big commitment both on the student’s part and the colleges.

The opportunity is for a student to truly showcase how much they want to attend and contribute to the school, so the fear of applying Early Decision looms over the student as they decide whether to apply early or regular decision.”

But many schools are rethinking of offering the option of Early Action.

Students abuse this application method by applying to too many schools early, when 90 percent of them are not their top choices.

Even though accepted, students turn down many offers just to pick out their top choice college, treating all other colleges as “safety schools” and as a gauge for the likeliness of getting accepted elsewhere.

The opportunities are endless, and there is a school for every student. But for those who truly want to attend their lifelong dream school, applying early will only improve their chances of getting accepted.

“I think that applying early to schools can clearly demonstrate a student’s interest in the particular college, whether it be decision or action.

Students should take advantage of the opportunity and even if it does not work out in the end, there are so many other options out there for students to continue exploring,” Li said.

The Unstoppable Chance Quarry Born This Way • Local 8th grader inspired to keep playing, competing and learning.

You may not know anything about Chance Quarry, even though his name symbolizes who he is.

You may know that Chance is the kid you see that shows up for every practice, every game, every opportunity life has to offer.

You may know the Chance I have known for almost half his life. Of course he is only 14 years old.

You see he was born missing part of his left leg. No one is sure why this happened, but after meeting Chance

you will understand that it is not what defines him but what inspires him..

“No a shark did not bite off my leg!” is often his answer when first meeting other kids. In fact, usually, he just asks people if they want to see his robot leg.

Chance attends Rolling Hills Preparatory School after transitioning there from Dapplegray Middle School. He is also a straight ‘A’ student, his proud parents point out.

Chance is much like many other 14-year-old boys, worried about girls, homework and how his shot is going to be effective on the basketball court.

Middle Schools TakeCompete On Winter Sports • PVIS, Miraleste and Ridgecrest middle schools are competing in boys and girls soccer and basketball in the South Bay League for winter sports.

Ridgecrest took on Adams middle school Tuesday while PVIS faced Hermosa Valley middle school Wednesday.

The Sea Kings dominated its home basketball courts, getting big wins from both the boys’ and girls’ teams. The soccer teams got big wins making it a clean sweep over their South Bay rivals.

Take The Win . . . The PVIS boys’ socccer team got a 5-2 win over Hermosa Valley Middle School at home Wednesday.

Middle School Kings And Queens . . . Middle school rivalry games are set for next week with PVIS traveling to Miraleste and Ridgecrest traveling to PVIS to see who owns the Hill in soccer and basketball.

Three Field Goals . . . The PVIS girls’ soccer team earned a 9-0 victory over Hermosa Valley in South Bay League action at home.

National Skating Month Hits Ice Chalet Ice Time

Young Skaters . . .

5-year-old “Rising Stars” Sky Rei Williams and Vienna Farrow at the Ice Chalet.

January is National Skating Month and this year Promenade Ice Chalet is teamed up with U.S. Figure Skating to host a day dedicated to promoting skating and welcoming those new to the sport onto the ice.

Ranked second in the nation under the Learn to Skate USA program, where else better than Promenade Ice Chalet to try ice skating out.

The celebration took place at Promenade Ice Chalet on Jan. 26. Celebration festivities included skating games and contests, special performances and guest appearances by U.S. National Champion and World Professional Champion Scott Williams hosting the event.

The Promenade Ice Chalet coaches are U.S. National Champion Amber Corwin along with U.S. National Medalist & Competitors, Including Professional Skaters Azumi Sagara Williams, Kristy Venasky Ormond, Jacki Davison, Jennifer Ito Harry, Nina Nguyen, Alexandria Schminda showcased a “Wonder Woman” theme performance.

Theater on Ice featured the Rising Stars 5-year-olds Vienna Farrow and Sky Rei Williams.

You see he takes advantage of all that is around him. He does well in school, he has been the starting quarterback on his flag football team for the past four years - three of those years winning championships - and is looking forward to taking on tackle football in high school.

When Chance was seven, he started attending Palos Verdes Football and Cheer “Challenger” programs, and the next year decided that he was ready to play flag football. Then he went on to participate in Little League and Palos Verdes Basketball Association (PVBA).

More importantly, Chance has gone on to volunteer in the “Challenger” program, giving back to the community he began in.

Every summer he attends ‘Camp No Limbs’ and realizes that just because he is a little different nothing has stopped him.

While it has been a wild ride watching the first 14 years of Chance’s life what may be more exciting is watching Chance take on the next 14 years.
