High School Formals Take Big Planning

Winter Formals

• The beginning of the New Year is also the beginning of conversations about the Winter Formals.

By Katie Hageman Both Peninsula High School and Palos Verdes High School have their own dances each year. PV’s dance is on Saturday, Jan. 28. Peninsula’s dance is the following Saturday, Feb. 4.

Dance themes and locations themselves are quite extravagant. Peninsula’s theme is “A Land Before Time: Prehistoric Elegance” and will be at the Natural History Museum. PV’s Formal will be at The Majestic Theater in downtown L.A. With a formal comes many decisions, and occasional drama. Choices need to be made about dresses, hair and makeup, among other things.

One important factor is whom everyone will be going with. People must decide: Will they go stag? Will they go with a group of friends? Or will they go with a date?

One student at Peninsula High, Roopsha Chatterjee, said, “This will be my first year going to Formal, and I’m excited to be going with my closest friends. I couldn’t think of a better group of people to spend the night with.”

Sometimes, couples come from two different schools. In this case, decisions need to be made about what Formal they will go to if they are going at all, or if they will go to both.

Veronica Scriven, another student at Peninsula, said, “My boyfriend and I go to different schools so we decided to take turns being the odd one out rather than going to the dances at both schools. He came to the PEN formal last

year, so we went to PV Prom later in the year.”

PV and Peninsula are on a level playing field regarding Formal. Most students at each school attend their respective school’s dances and have a great time.

A student from PV High, Nick Thompsen, said, “Last year I went to PV Formal with my girlfriend, who goes to Peninsula. This year we will be going to PEN Formal and I think we will have just as much fun as we did last year.”

In addition to the actual details of Winter Formal, a lot of planning goes into the elaborate ways of asking someone to Formal. For example, instead of a boy simply asking a girl, “Do you want to go to Formal with me?” There is often a more dramatic way of asking that same question.

Formal date proposals often involve the use of big signs, lots of puns and clever lines, hours of preparation, and of course, lots of smiles.

Formal may just be one night, but there is a great deal of buildup for that one night.

Winter Formal Takes On New Traditions . . . It has become a tradition for local students to come up with elaborate ways to ask a person out to the Formal.

The Toys for Tots Native American program began as a special program between the U.S. Marine Corp and the Navajo Nation after World War II. Today, the program benefits more than 120,000 Native American children annually.

RHP, PV Net Meet STEM Challenge STEM

• Rolling Hills Prep and PV Net team up to offer STEM classes for RHP students.

STEM Tournament Season Coming Up . . . Peninsula High students test and make modifications to its latest robotic creation.

As the influence of STEM, or Science-Technology-Engineering-Math, continues to grow, schools all over are on a quest to expand their programs.

Rolling Hills Preparatory School has recently partnered with PV Net, the local technology center, to bring their students greater access to the STEM field. These classes provide any high schooler with the ability to earn high school credit, while also supporting Rolling Hills Prep.

The first of these classes was offered

in December, where students could develop skills with a software called Arduino, which focuses on designing and building devices that are used for sense and control.

More classes are coming this Spring, and are open to all students at Rolling Hills Prep as well as all students on the hill.

Additionally, later this year, Rolling Hills Prep will add a new facility to expand their STEM program in an effort, “to provide opportunities for youth to discover how to utilize their STEM knowledge and learn to solve realworld problems that benefit their community.”

Olivia deMoraes Leads Palos Verdes Soccer Profile • Sea King junior channels love of soccer to help lead PV into Bay League action and quest for another CIF title.

By Jenna McFarland Palos Verdes High junior Olivia deMoraes is a soccer player who has taken her love for the game to a whole different level. Soccer has been a huge part of her life for as long as she can remember, since she began playing when she was just six years old.

Her dad has always been her number one fan, and he has played a huge role in supporting her soccer career.

When talking about her dad, Olivia has nothing but positive things to say.

“My dad is probably my biggest influence on and off the field because he has always inspired me to be the best version of myself that is possible,” deMoraes said.

Although having her dad as a fan on a sideline was always appreciated, he had more of a role in her soccer career

Sea Kings Have The Talent . . .

After her club team won the national championship for her age division last year, someone on staff for the Brazilian National team contacted her dad.

“My dad was the one who made sure I got the amazing opportunity to

play on the Brazilian National team because he was the one who communicated with the coaches and made sure that I could follow my dreams,” she said After she was pursued by the Brazilian team, she went on to play for them for a few months in the middle of her sophomore year. Her experience playing in Brazil had its ups and downs, but, ultimately, it played a role in shaping her into the phenomenal player that she is today.

Her experience in Brazil had a tremendous and lasting impact on her, both as a player and as a high schooler.

One of the biggest challenges was communication.

“I didn’t speak Portuguese, and none of the girls or coaches spoke much English, so that was a huge struggle,” she said.

However, said deMoraes, “Even though there were difficulties, everyone there was super kind and helpful, and they really challenged me to grow and improve.”

Overall, Brazil was an experience.

It provided Olivia with the unique opportunity to learn about a new culture, while simultaneously improving her ability as a soccer player.

Currently, she is committed to play soccer at UCLA, but most importantly, she continues to love the game.

“Although I have things that I would love to achieve with soccer, the most important thing for me is that I just want to have fun with it and not think of it like a job,” she said

Atashi Leads PV Into Bay League PV Basketball

Freshman Sea Kings On The Rise . . .

• Palos Verdes High basketball is back winning games and looking forward to a trip to the zoo.

Coming into this season, the Palos Verdes boys basketball team knew it had something to prove.

After winning the El Segundo tournament, in which Chris BartlettMatthews hit a buzzer-beating three pointer, the team carried that momentum into the Chula Vista of San Diego tournament over winter break.

There, the Sea Kings outscored their opponents by over 20 points in each game. Sebastian Atashi took home MVP honors, and junior Riley Yang was named to the all tournament team.

The Kings then defeated West Torrance in a non-league duel as a preparation for the Bay League.

In Bay League play, the Sea Kings opened up with a home stand against the Inglewood Sentinels. After leading most of the game and being up by 8 entering the fourth quarter, the Sentinels closed the game on a 25-8 run to storm back and shock the Kings.

The Sea Kings had to move on and get ready for a test at Mira Costa, an old foe.

After struggling throughout the game, the Kings found themselves down three with just under three seconds to go. Atashi inbounded the ball to Greg Bartlett-Matthews, who turned and fired a fadeaway three pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime!

In the overtime period, the Kings and Costa traded baskets, until a Costa breakaway layup with seven seconds left put them up by two. After the ball was deflected out of bounds, the Kings received the ball at the half court line with three seconds left to play.

Atashi inbounded to senior Toni Marinkovic, who handed the ball back and Atashi let it fly from three feet behind the half court line and sunk it!

The Kings notched their first Bay League win after going 0-10 in the Bay League the previous year.

Palos Verdes then took on the Redondo Union Sea Hawks, and lost by a score of 70-44, failing to capitalize on an opportunity to move to 2-1 in the Bay League.

The Kings will take on Morningside this Friday at home in their final game before a showdown with rival Peninsula.

Panthers Join World Of Hip-Hop Choreo Dance • The world of Hip-Hop and COED Choreo on display at Peninsula High.

By Asumi Shuda The Peninsula High dance community has stepped away from sports of the “norm” and formed a team called COED Choreo.

This exciting hip-hop team is one of Peninsula’s favorite groups to watch, with its members’ energy bringing smiles, cheers and feet stomping from the audience.

COED Choreo is a competitive dance team that focuses on certain movements, such as “Popping ‘n’ Locking” - a famous move among Peninsula Panthers, and surrounds all of their

pieces on R&B and hip-hop.

The team has competitions this month, February, March and April in which the team travels off the Hill to high schools in Glendale, Sonora, Corona and many other cities to show the judges what COED can really do.

Every summer and fall, the COED Choreo team puts together a day-long workshop called Camp Coed. It is open to all students from third grade to 12th.

With $25, a student can learn choreography, taught by the COED dancers themselves, get T-shirts, treats and enjoy an experience that will make each individual consider joining this exciting team.

Marin Ihara, a junior at Peninsula, has been in Coed Choreo since her freshman year.

“My sister really inspired me to dance, and I admire her so much,” said Ihara. “In 8th grade, I watched COED perform and that’s when I knew I had to join.”

Even through all the struggles of balancing school work and dancing, Ihara perseveres and has no regrets.

“Practice is pretty time-consuming, and making time for homework and studying is pretty hard. But in the end, it all turns out to be fun and exciting, so I don’t get stressed as much,” said Ihara.

This is Daren Chun’s first year on the COED team, and he has fallen in love with dancing and the team.

“When I first got in, I didn’t know anyone, but everyone was so welcoming on the first day. In my opinion, dancing relieves stress and it’s by far

my most favorite thing about high school, said Chun. “Getting into Coed was the best thing that has ever happened so far.”

The moment Chun got into Coed, he made a new family and opened a new door to his artistic passion.

Dance is a form of expressing one’s self, and it brings hearts together over a sincere passion. Coed Choreo is not only a team of talented dancers, but a group of young individuals who made friendships that will last through high school and beyond.

Dancers like Ihara, who stayed and will continue to stay in this team for the excitement and love, created a family with these teammates.

PEN Wrestling Getting Strong

that we share. We go through a lot during practices and when we go to meets, not many people are able to feel that experience.”

With all the attention the team is getting recently, team members who have been there since their freshman year also need to be recognized.

• The Peninsula High wrestling program continues to be a South Bay force and an attraction for Panthers athletes.

By Nina Li Wrestling, as a sport, became popular in the 19th century and that was the gateway to the development of modern sports. By the 1920s, wrestling became a professional sport and not just a way to entertain people.

Peninsula is the only high school in the Palos Verdes Unified School District that offers wrestling as a sport for credit. The team has grown in numbers and strength over the years.

Today, the team travels to many tournaments and receives many awards and prizes. Wrestling might not be the most popular team sport in school, but it is gaining more attention as new members join.

“I [decided] to join the wrestling team this year because it teaches you strength, endurance, and maturity,” said freshman Ethan Wendt. “It also teaches you how to defend yourself and be brave.”

During the season, the boys train to become stronger and lose their fatty weight to meet the weight classes.

Wrestling Continues To Grow At Peninsula High . . .

Today’s Panthers wrestlers continue the winning tradition of the Rolling Hills High Titans with tournament trophies and competing for league titles.

Sometimes they lose up to five pounds in a matter of two hours.

During meets, boys first weigh in and are grouped with competitors of the approximate same weight.

Throughout day’s competition, which, usually lasts from four to 12 hours, they

more interesting and decided to pursue that sport.

“When I got a chance to start wrestling, I took it,” Peltekov said. “I cannot just decide on one thing I like best about wrestling, but it is between learning how to compete and making

“My favorite part about being on the team is that you work with each other but, at the same time, you are competing against each another, testing your skill every time,” Wendt said.

Sophomore Robert Peltekov also switched his sport to wrestling this year. Previously participating in Tae Kwon Do, he thought wrestling looked

Along with the incoming wrestlers who were curious about the sport, sophomore Zack Denney has a background of wrestling that persuaded him to try it.

“I joined the team because my dad wrestled in high school, and I wanted to try it out,” Denney said. “Being on the team [highlights] the brotherhood

Lawrence Aragon joined the team his first year at Peninsula and decided to keep doing it after enjoying it so much after one year.

“I saw wrestling as a great way to stay in shape and challenge myself,” Aragon said.“ I wanted variety in my athletic pursuits so I decided to give wrestling a try after football season.

Hanging out with my teammates and going on overnight tournaments, beach runs, and eating out with them are some of the most fun things of being on the team.”

Side by side for four years, senior Gabor Nemeth also stayed on the team for the whole of his years at Peninsula.

“Wrestling is definitely the hardest sport I have ever played, and it is probably one of the hardest sports period,” Nemeth said. “However, it has taught me many valuable life lessons, and it has been such an awarding experience.”

RHP coach Harvey Kitani says his goals for this season are to win the league, southern section and state championships. He also wants the team to enjoy the journey along the way.

“The team has been outstanding in their attitude and continues to improve every day,” says Kitani.

Kitani said he’s really enjoying the players on his new team - with its biggest obstacles for the season being overcoming youth and lack of experience, but through trust and the grind, he has high hopes.

Kitani said his philosophy is to “make the commitment to work daily.

We want to improve in all areas, not only with basketball, but more with academics and character. We want to learn how much team work is needed for success to occur.”

“Anything less than ‘all in’ is not a commitment,” he added.

RHP is currently 4-0 in league play and 9-1 overall.

Spring Sports "Tryouts" Open 2017

Kid Pressure

• All four Peninsula Little Leagues, the PVP Girls’ Softball League and Peninsula Pony Leage marked the new year with player skill assessments.

Everyone makes a team and everyone is going to have a good time this season, but that doesn’t mean those "Skill Assessments" are fun and relaxing for kids or adults.

At every league, players are divided by age and then are led through a series of fielding, throwing, batting and running drills. Players are observed by managers and coaches who determine a player’s baseball and athletic skills by numbers one through ten, ten being best.

A player’s age is the most determining factor in which division a player will be placed. Then it’s the never-a-dullmoment where the adults draft where players are placed on hopefully equally matched teams.

As far as TRYOUTS, there really isn’t anything to be nervous about. All a player can hope for is to be on a team that enjoys and learns the game.

PVIS Begins New Season With Victories Middle School

• The Palos Verdes Intermediate winter sports team won five contests against Chadwick school to open the winter sports season.

By Sammy Funk PVIS had a very successful Wednesday, pulling out five victories.

The PVIS boys’ "A" basketball team played great against the Dolphins, winning the game 49-13.

The Sea Kings "B" team topped that by winning 61-7. Chadwick’s coach, Zak Krislock said,” I will look at what the boys did wrong, such as being too easily double teamed and work on it.”

The PVIS girls’ basketballs started the game cold, but pulled out a PVIS 36-26 victory. The coach, Ms. Arjasbi said,” It
