Palos Verdes High School and Stanford University alumni runner Rebecca Mehra was honored to take on the Great Edinburgh Cross Country Challenge in Edinburgh, Scotland last week, Jan. 13.

Mehra ran the 1k relay with three other teammates from the U.S. National team.

“The race was unlike anything I had ever experienced. It was made up of four members, two women and two men, and each ran a 1000m loop on the cross country course,” Mehra said. “The men were assigned to go 1st and 3rd on the relay, and the women 2nd and 4th.”

Mehra felt extremely lucky, as she was chosen by her team to be the anchor, or finisher, of their race. The U.S. team raced against seven other teams from Great Britain, Belgium, Europe, Scotland, England, and Ireland.

The weather conditions during the race made a slippery and muddy course for the racers. The tough course includ-

ed two steep uphills, and one downhill.

“We were expected to battle it out with Team Great Britain and Team Europe for a chance at the title, she said.

But “when a race goes unexpectedly you just have to adjust and do the best with what you have.”, said Mehra.

The U.S. National relay team did not do as well as they had hoped, finishing 7th.

Local Girls Honored For Charity, Service Service • 19 high school girls recognized for community service.

Las Madrecitas, an auxiliary of the Charitable Children’s Guild of the Orthopædic Institute for Children (OIC), held its 52th annual Evergreen Ball Jan. 6 in the Grand Ballroom of the Beverly Wilshire Hotel.

The event honors and recognizes the Las Niñas 2018 senior class for their exemplary volunteer service to OIC and their community.

At the Ball, Dr. Anthony Scaduto, OIC’s president and chief executive officer, presented each Las Niñas honoree with a special white gold medallion as recognition for service and dedication.

Each member of the Las Niñas senior class has contributed several hundred hours of volunteer service to OIC and to their community throughout their high school years.

The Evergreen Ball planning committee was led by co-chairs Julie Schweitzer and Tina Vargas who together with the Las Madrecitas membership contributed countless hours to the event.

Las Niñas members donate their time throughout the local community and have the opportunity to volunteer at OIC, where they gain experience working with orthopædic patients and health care professionals.

Las Niñas and Las Madrecitas also raise money for OIC through various fundraising initiatives throughout the year, including the annual fall fundraiser, holiday fundraiser, raffle ticket sales, Sees candy sales, and annual fashion show boutique sales.

Miraleste Set To Host VEX Robotics Tourney Twenty-eight robotics teams from middle schools from all over Southern California will compete in the VEX Robotics Competition game, In the Zone, at Miraleste Intermediate School on Saturday Feb. 3 The teams will compete against each other in a non-stop day of competition made possible by the sponsorship of Terminal Equipment Supply Inc. (TESI).

Participants will drive robots they designed, built and programmed using VEX EDR. The game is played by stacking cones on goals, scoring cones on mobile goals in goal zones, having the highest stacks, and parking robots.

The VEX robotics Competition is one in a series of tournaments supported by the REC Foundation. The competition season culminates each spring at the VEX Robotics World Championship,

where top qualifying teams from local, state, and international VEX robotics events have the opportunity to challenge their top-ranked peers from over 45 countries.

Sea Kings Look To Keep The Winning Times Going

Girls Soccer

• A smaller roster adds to the challenge the Sea Kings face entering Bay League competition.

By Jenna McFarland For the past several years, Palos Verdes High School girls soccer has been a powerhouse in the Bay League, winning the League the past three consecutive years, and becoming CIF champion two seasons ago.

This season, expectations are high for the team to continue its impressive streak of success. However, one major setback that PV soccer is facing, along with high school soccer teams all over, is the new Academy rule.

The rule states that if players decide to play Academy, they aren’t allowed to play high school soccer, in case of injuries that could happen during the

high school season. Many Sea Kings have decided to play Academy, and so the PV girls soccer roster is significantly smaller than in previous years.

Luckily, the Sea Kings aren’t allowing their diminishing numbers to knock them down. In fact, the smaller team is making them work harder and ultimately become better.

According to senior Izzy Carr, “There are good things and bad things about the smaller roster, but I think having a smaller team allows us to be a closer knit group.”

Many good things come out of having a close knit team, like trust and unity, which Carr also touches on.

“Obviously, there are many amazing parts of the soccer program, but I think the best part is the girls, and how I can trust my teammates on the field and they can trust me, which allows us to play together as an in-sync unit,” she

said.

So far, the team chemistry has pulled through even with the smaller numbers. Except for a rough go in the game against Redondo, the season has been going very well for the Sea Kings and the team is improving as time goes by.

With many games under their belt, the Sea Kings are confident in their abilities and ultimately bring home the fourth consecutive Bay League championship.

Carr reiterates this confidence when she says, “We are getting better as the season goes on, and I expect our results to reflect that success.”

Fellow senior Ryan Frost has the same optimistic message. According to Frost, “We are expecting to get another Bay League title and I have high hopes of going pretty far in CIF this year, potentially even winning CIF again.”

It looks like PV girls’ soccer has yet another successful season ahead of it.

As they girls adjust to new challenges and their new situation, there’s no doubt that they are going to emerge stronger than ever.

Panthers Dance Up A Storm

Dance

• More than 250 students particpate in dance teams and programs at Peninsula High.

By Lily Shaw Unusual among high schools, Peninsula High has an immense dance department, with more than six teams on the campus ranging in a variety of styles and levels.

To some it may be confusing, but the access to so many teams allows more than 250 students participate the dance program..

Choreo is the dance class that counts as both a sport and an art. There are three levels of Choreo: Intermediate, Advanced and Company.

To be a part of one of these teams, students are required to audition during the previous school year, so the team can begin to prepare over the summer.

The intermediate dance teams are run by Kimi Hendrick, and Advanced and Company Choreo are run

by Heather Myrick. These teams focus primarily on Jazz and Lyrical styled dances but do occasionally branch into

The dancers who participate in the Choreo program hold a show in April for three nights for which the dancers have spent the school year preparing for.

However, there are more teams called “Choreo” at Peninsula, which is run by Heather Horn. Both junior varsity and varsity Coed Choreo are two

boy-girl teams that focus on Hip Hop. These teams are also required to audition the previous year.

The Coed Choreo program performs at several school events and participates in the Choreo show in the Spring as well as their own separate Coed show. Additionally, Coed Choreo

competes against other schools at high school dance competitions and has won many awards for the dances.

Varsity Dance is yet another team available on the Peninsula campus run

by Hendrick. Varsity Dance is the competitive dance team that participates in high school dance competitions across the South Bay. The varsity team has won several awards in the past and is ready for this competitive season, which began this month. The team also performs at several school events and holds a show in May. The Varsity Dance team is also the only dance team that receives varsity sport credit.

For the inexperienced dancers, Peninsula offers a PE Dance Program that requires no audition. Through the class, the dancers learn basic technique, choreograph for themselves, and how to pick up choreography.

Although it may seem like too many, Peninsula High’s dance program continues to flourish with a substantial number of dancers joining every year.

Peninsula Junior League Baseball Begins First Season Jr. League • New Peninsula league opens for Little League graduates.

Baseball Warms Up In Janurary . . . Managers and coaches for the new Peninsula Junior League take notes during tryouts last week.

Everybody Is At The Park . . . Ernie Howlett Park is getting ready for a another season of baseball.

The new Junior league is an organization put together by all four little leagues on the Hill, Palos Verdes, Silver Spur, Rolling Hills and Lunada Bay. Junior League is a continuation of Little League for ages 13-15, played on a larger field. As the Peninsula Junior League website states, “We are committed to providing a fun and competitive baseball experience on the Hill for those graduated Major players 13-14 years old.”

As John Tellenbach explained, “We are working on inter-league play (Redondo Beach has 12-13-year old’s and the Peninsula has 13-14-year old’s) but currently we are playing 15-18 intraleague play and 3-5 inter-league play.”

The league will have two home fields, Ernie Howlett Park and George Allen Field, which have received a $50,000 renovation.

The Junior League held tryouts at Ernie Howlett Park on Jan 13. “It was like many other tryouts I had and it was nice to be on a baseball field again,” said Kendall Ward.

They were hoping for four teams, but currently with the 66 kids enrolled, they welcomed two more teams to make 6 teams. Next year they hope to expand the league to 10 teams.

Junior League replaces Peninsula PONY League, which folded last season after the retirement of longtime President Lee Frantz.

The four Little Leagues on the Hill wanted to create a league for all the kids not going into club baseball, so they all decided they wanted to provide an experience for the kids after their final year in Little League. This is why the Junior League was started.

As Tellenbach states, “All four (Little League) presidents wanted to start it, and we did.”

Panthers Travel To Dominican Republic Service • Peninsula High freshmen travel to the Dominican Republic to give away recycled baseball equipment.

By Nina Li Many people are fortunate enough to eat three times a day and have a place to live. However, there are also people who would appreciate even the smallest things, such as a hat.

From Dec. 14 to Dec. 20, five Peninsula High School freshmen went to the Dominican Republic with RBI HIT, an organization that gathers used baseball equipment from around the community to bring to less fortunate areas.

Jake LaBreche, Ethan Wang, Grant Zane, Eli Somers and Toby WakefieldKarl all played Little League and, when they upgraded their bats, realize they could donate their equipment directly to less fortunate young players. With that in mind, the boys sought dona-

tions of baseball equipment, collecting 1,196 items in total.

They also held a USC bike donation and were able to obtain 75 bikes, which were given through the Manny Mota Foundation. The boys, Grant Zane’s brother Parker, and their fathers flew a red-eye flight from LAX to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to Santo Domingo to distribute the donations.

When they landed, Dodgers’ staff picked them up and took them to Campo Las Palmas, where they were staying. During the first day, they served food they brought from the United States to children and senior citizens at Manny Mota’s academy. They also handed out the donated bikes and baseball bats.

“I think the best part of the trip was seeing the kids’ faces after we gave them the baseball equipment,” LaBreche said. “It made me realize how fortunate we are to live in such a nice place.”

New Bats Make The Day . . . . .. Peninsula freshman athletes gave away thousands of recycled bats at Manny Mota’s Foundation during winter break. . . . Continued from Next Page On the fourth day, they visited Futuro Vivo, a Catholic school that the O’Malley family adopted and still funds.

The boys’ passed out Dodgers hats and T-shirts to the kids and toured the school.

The school is free for all local students, and their parents are required to volunteer there. On the fifth day, they visited an all-girls orphanage called Pasitos De Jesus, located in Boca Chica.

The orphanage was founded by Daima Florian, who started it to take care of one girl suffering from Down Syndrome. The orphanage has expanded to house more than 40 girls who had been abandoned and abused.

In light of the holiday spirit, the boys bought dolls for the girls from a local

store and were able to listen to the girls sing songs and participate themselves with renditions of Feliz Navidad. ”One difficulty of the trip was we did physical labor like I had never done before,” Somers said. “One day we unloaded an entire shipping container of food, household goods and sporting equipment. Another day we hauled 50 pound bags of rice for the Manny Mota Foundation. We worked very hard and it was tiring!”

Along with the work, the boys were also able to have fun with the locals and go sightseeing.

They were able to play a few innings of baseball with Manny Mota’s Dominican team as well as games with the local boys. They were also able to practice every day on the same pristine fields that the Dominican drafted

Dodgers use.

On day three, they attended a Dominican League baseball game and witnessed a historic home run. The boys felt the passion that the Dominicans had for baseball and were happy that they were able to encourage this feeling.

“Honestly, this was perhaps a once

in a lifetime trip,” Somers said. “We got to stay in the Dodgers facilities and work with disadvantaged kids. When you give a kid a used baseball bat and he cries because he has never owned a bat before, you are touched.

When you serve a kid their only hot meal of the day, you are grateful. And

when you go to an orphanage and the kids greet you with smiles and song, you are humbled.”

On their last day, the boys went to Manny and his wife Margarita’s home, where they listened to Mota’s Major League stories from his playing days.

Mota also showed them his World Series ring, World Series trophy as well as his Silver Slugger Award Bat. Manny asked the boys to recount what they learned and saw during their stay there and all the boys expressed their gratitude for being able to help children who were less privileged than them.

It also allowed them to think about everything they have and how lucky they are to live in a place where they don’t have to worry about where their next meal will come from.

“It was great to see the boys being in an environment that they are not accustomed to, as well as initially being a little bit out of their comfort zone,” said John LaBreche. “However, the more time they spent there the more relaxed they felt and you could see them genuinely feeling great about helping less fortunate people. A very humbling and awesome experience for them to grow as individuals while doing gratifying work.”

Mountain Men Climb To New Heights Scouts • Peninsula Scouts trek above 13,000 feet during nine-day journey in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

By Daniel Meyerhof Palos Verdes Boy Scout Troop 276, also known as the ‘’Mountain Men’’ troop, are greeting the new year with adventurous trips and hikes.

Their recent endeavor was a nineday backpacking trip in the Sierra.

The trip included a climb to the peak of Mt. Gabb, which is 13,741 feet high.

Nine boys and an adult chaperone and Scoutmaster Macfarlane made the trip into the wilderness.

Ten-year Scout veteran Roger Zhang, a senior at Palos Verdes high school, was one of the hikers.

Zhang says the best part of the trip was ‘’being able to go deep into the wilderness and to see the views and generally enjoy the untouched land-

New Year Opens With New Tastes, Flavors

A Culinary Journey

By Alexis Ferguson With Christmas in the past, the New Year is the talk around town. You always hear about plans and resolutions for the upcoming year, but no one reflects on the year that we are leaving behind. I love to look over my favorite pictures, especially of food and my favorite restaurants. Last year, I loved cauliflower rice and smoothie bowls.

This year, the rave for me were acti-

vated charcoal and avocado toast.

Living in Los Angeles, there is really no excuse not to try new trending foods.

Through social media, I discovered an ice cream shop in downtown called Little Damage that served charcoal ice

cream. Of course, a few weeks later, there I was at noon in line for ice cream. I didn’t really know what to expect as I had heard so many different opinions of this ice cream. I finally got my ice cream and after one lick, I was in love.

The flavor was so unique, and it made you want to keep eating it. The ice cream had a faint cinnamon flavor and was a bit nutty, almost like coconut. Although my teeth turned black, the ice cream was worth it. I liked the charcoal ice cream a lot, but it is not an ice cream I would crave or eat out of the tub when I am sad.

Avocado toast has grown on me.

I am not a huge fan of avocados but what I like most about this trend is how you can tweak the toast to your liking.

I have seen toast with eggs, plain, radishes, greens, and so many other ingredients to compliment the avocado.

My favorite way to eat avocado toast is with salt, pepper, a drizzle of olive oil, and balsamic vinegar. Avocado toast is a great snack and living in California we have great avocados.

My two favorite trendy places I ate at this year are Flower Child and Malibu

Peninsula Mountain Men At Home . . . Local Scouts hiked more than 60 miles through California mountain wilderness. . . . Continued from Page 17 scape.’’

The Scouts got plenty of wilderness action, such as hiking from Duck Pass trailhead, near Mammoth Lakes, to Pine Creek Mine, near Bishop .

The Mountain Men took the John Muir and Pacific Crest trails to reach their destination. The boys camped under the stars with just their sleeping

bags next to the shores of Lake Virginia and Silver Pass Lake.

The trip covered more than 60 miles, and the boys had to carry everything in their backpacks that they would need for nine days.

All that time together brought the Mountain Men closer, according to Zhang. ‘’On these sorts of hikes where

everyone goes deep into the wilderness, everyone really needs to come together to help each other. Everyone becomes very close with each other, and we work together so that everyone can have fun,” Zhang said.

Part of what makes this trip great is because the boys in the troop cover a variety of ages, from high school seniors like Zhang, sophomores like An-

thony Kerker, and freshman like Ewan MacFarlane.

The different ages allow the boys to grow and learn from each other and ensure the troop will continue.

Troop #276 has been based in Palos Verdes for 50 years, and the Mountain Men are looking forward to keeping the tradition alive, and adding some fun wilderness trips on the way.
