Rain Barrels Finally Put To Good Work Got Water?

• Program to help conserve and save water gets its first big winter rainfall.

By Nina Li As the much-needed rain pours on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, it is imperative to be ready to utilize this water in the most efficient way.

On Nov. 17, Peninsula High students partnered with the West Basin Municipal Water District to distribute free rain barrels to residents who registered to receive one.

Rain barrels are used to collect rainwater that could be used for drinking and for outdoor purposes.

According to the Water District, by using this rainwater, pollution, which flows into nearby storm drains, sewers and waterways, will decrease exponentially, resulting in a cleaner ocean.

The barrels also play a role in making sure that the local water supply usage is maximized. The goal of the district is to reduce the reliance on imported water supplies and encourage people to make the most of their local water sources, such as rainwater.

Those who received rain barrels must follow the guidelines posted on the district’s website. Some of the rules include installation of the barrels within 30 days, email a photo of barrels that are mounted in a manner which allows it to receive water unimpeded from a rain gutter, and not be blocking pathways.

The barrel itself includes a two to three inch flexible downspout, water hose connector, overflow fitting and built-in mosquito screen. The barrels are made of material derived from recycled food barrels and come in a red or black color. Each barrel weighs about 16 pounds and has a 55 gallon capacity.

At Peninsula High, students who volunteered to help with the rain barrels signed up through the Associated Student Body and could receive five hours of service credit put towards Science National Honor Society. The students helped register residents and loaded about 400 rain barrels into cars.

“We put the rain barrels in the back of people’s cars and made sure they gave us the correct information beforehand,” said Morgan Dickson. “I actually brought one home from the event and use it every time it rains.”

Another Way To Get Ready For The Rain . . . More than 400 rain barrels are handed out to local residents via program from the West Basin Municipal Water District and Peninsula High School.

Many students did not know the function of rain barrels or how effective they are in an effort to help save the environment. However, after this event, many students were much more informed about water conservation.

“I would definitely consider keeping a rain barrel,” Emily Wang said.

“The rainwater it collects can be used for anything, from watering plants to washing cars. It is great for water conservation.”

Senior Ari Cho is currently taking an Advanced Placement Environmental Science class. Although she did not attend the rain barrel event, she heard about it through her friends and believes that it is a great way for the community to get involved with saving the environment.

“A lot of my friends do not know the true effects of their actions on the environment,” Cho said. “The world that we live in now will be the home to our future children. If we do not take care of it now through things such as these rain barrels, we will be living in our own trash and slowly destroying our home.”

Social Media Users Beware Instagram • Having fun with social media can quickly turn into something entirely different.

By Justin Kim A photo is uploaded onto an Instagram account. Just a few seconds later, the photo is flooded with likes and comments from followers. This flow of constant attention continues for a few hours, perhaps a few days, depending on the number of followers the

account has and the popularity of the post.

While most posts can be seen as sources of jovial entertainment and light conversation, others can quickly fall into a darker subject such as cyberbullying.

With nearly a billion users worldwide, Instagram has become the new platform for sharing pictures and videos of people’s daily lives. There is an unlimited amount of unfiltered content which Instagram attempts to keep in check.

Accounts can be protected from prying eyes with a Private mode, which allows users to decline or accept requests for access to their posts.

Otherwise, users choose to leave their accounts public, leaving the entirety of their account open for anyone to see.

The danger in social media today lies especially in cyberbullying as well as potential unknown predators.

Posts can deeply offend a person, or a group of people, and have led to fighting, depression and even suicide.

Words are unfiltered in both captions

and comments, giving users the ability to leave harmful messages towards other users. Messages can also be directly messaged to a user, at the discretion of any account.

Furthermore, people have the power to create “burner accounts” where they can hide behind blank profiles with no indication of who they are. This leads to problems such as predators reaching out to young teens or people making cruel remarks to users who have no idea who they may

MIS Set To Host Robotics Tournament

Miraleste Intermediate School will host its fourth annual VEX Robotics Competition on Saturday, February 2.

Thirty-two middle school teams from Southern California will display their robotics and programming skills when they compete against each other in a non-stop, action-packed day of competition made possible by the sponsorship of SpaceX. The teams will battle robots they designed, built, and programmed using VEX EDR. This year’s VEX robotics competition game, “Turning Point”, is played by stacking caps on posts, flipping caps, toggling flags by shooting balls, and parking robots on platforms.

This is a series of events supported by the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation. The competition season culminates each spring at the VEX Robotics World Championship, where top teams have the opportunity to challenge their peers from over 30 countries around the world.

Dance Season Continues On The Hill

• Dancers get ready to compete and have fun this year.

By Asumi Shuda As January comes to a close, Peninsula High’s dance teams are looking to taste victory during competition season once again.

At the 2017-2018 USA Dance Nationals, hip-hop dance team COED Choreo triumphed with multiple first to third place trophies within both the varsity and junior varsity leagues. Peninsula’s Varsity Dance also swept the stage with assorted first to fourth place victories at the end of nationals.

For COED Choreo, this has been a transition year because former head coach Heather Horn passed the torch to Kimi Hendrick in July.

Moreover, Junior Varsity is under the guidance of a new coach, Danyel Moulton. There has also been the addition of a new varsity coach, Shigeto Nakano, who will work alongside the current coach, Leo Matsuyama.

With the transition in leadership, changes such as styles of dance and organizing traditional events, such as Camp COED, without the eye of Horn has been obstacles that the team has overcome. Now, these dancers are equipped with various sets such as Small, All-Female, All-Male, and Large to bring to the judges this season.

Varsity Dance has held this year close to heart, as the team may or may not continue next season. The team has comprised sets ranging in both size and styles, with a heavier emphasis on the jazz and lyrical categories.

The team’s most recent competition, at West Coast Elite in San Diego, garnered second, third and fourth place wins, kick-starting the competition season.

With practices five days a week, as well as morning training on late starts, these dancers have drilled multiple sets to surprise the judges in upcoming competitions. The teams are ready to walk on the stage with confidence in their craft and victory in mind.

Peninsula Baseball Comes Out Strong For Coach Mendoza Panther Pride

Peninsula High held an alumni baseball game recently to help raise money for the Brett Mendoza Scholarship fund.

All players wore the number 7 in support of Mendoza, a Peninsula baseball coach who died last year.

The scholarship will go to help a Peninsula High senior to go to Loyola Marymount, the college Mendoza went to.

Some of the items for sale at the game, held at Peninsula High’s baseball field, were 50/50 raffle tickets, Dodger tickets, and Los Angeles Kings tickets.

The baseball day begin with the Junior Varsity beating Freshman team, followed by the the Alumni vs. Varsity game, won by the alumni, 5-3.

PEN Soccer Mixing Fun With School Boys’ Soccer • High school soccer season deep into Bay League competition.

By Nina Li As the winter sports season gets into full swing, the Peninsula varsity boys’ soccer team hopes to defend its title of Bay League Champions under the coaching of Patrick Daley.

There are 27 players on this year’s team from freshman to seniors, three of whom are goalies.

Senior Josh Kahen has been playing soccer for 13 years and is looking forward, hopefully, to winning another Bay League title.

“My goals are to grow closer with my teammates and defend our Bay League title while also winning a CIF ring,” said Kahen. “My favorite part about soccer is making a huge save for my team when needed most.”

Similarly, junior Owen Ralbovsky has also been playing soccer for 13 years and practices hard to hone in his soccer skills.

“My goal for this season is to throw balls better and achieve higher soccer intellect,” said Ralbovsky. “My favorite part about playing soccer is working in the field for Coach Pat.” Daley has been a part of the soccer program at Peninsula for eight years, three of which were spent coaching the

junior varsity.

In his fifth season as varsity coach, Daley runs the entire program and has a long background in soccer. Daley has been playing soccer since he was five years old and participated in AYSO in the South Bay area.

He attended South Torrance High School, where he played on the varsity soccer team for three years before playing intramural in college. Right after college, he coached elementary school students in San Francisco before moving to Los Angeles and coaching at Peninsula.

“One of my favorite parts [of coaching soccer] is watching boys become men,” Daley said. “They are developing at the high school age into young men and being productive members of society.”

To prepare for games, the boys practice after school to improve techniques and fix areas of weakness. Practices also depend in the situation of the week, whether they are preparing for a game or recovering from one.

“We always finish with a scrimmage because that’s the best part of sports, in my opinion,” Daley said.

“It is important to be actually playing. We’ll go through drills, but we will definitely finish with some sort of scrimmage to add some fun to it,” Daley said.

Since the roster for this year’s team consists of mostly sophomores, Daley believes that it might be difficult, since they are so new, to defend their title and make it to CIF again.

“It’s much more than just wins or losses,” Daley said. “It is how these guys play the game, and then for me to watch them get accepted into universities and see them come back at the annual alumni game that we have everything Thanksgiving. It’s one of my favorite parts—just to see how they have become successful young men.”

“It has just been a pleasure being

able to coach this program because soccer in general does not get much recognition, but the guys that I have been coaching at this school are so dedicated and it really shows,” Daley said.

“I think that is why we have made the playoffs for four years in a row now. Before I took over the program, the team had not made the playoffs in eight years, so its been a really big turnaround for the boys soccer program at Peninsula and I am really proud to be a part of it,” Daley said.

Instagram Big Part Of Students’ Lives

Within the Palos Verdes school district, both middle schoolers and high schoolers are extremely active on social media.

Ridgecrest, Palos Verdes and Miraleste intermediate students are often introduced to social media during their transition from elementary schools to middle schools, and quickly become experts on how to work the different apps.

Students attempt to gain popularity through their posts, coming up with creative captions and carefully picking out only the best pictures to show. Peninsula and Palos Verdes high schools have Instagram and Snapchat accounts to announce academic and sporting events along with pictures and events for school spirit.

High school students often find themselves scrolling through Instagram for hours every day, watching anything from cooking and sports videos to student posts from both schools.

The majority of interactions in posts stay between the students from the

same school, but it is not uncommon to find comments from students from the school across the Hill.

Sometimes, these comments can lead to altercations, but usually stick within friendly and encouraging premises. Both school administrations do their best to ensure the safety of their students and follow the social media trends as best they can.

The use of Instagram today within our own district is not just used by students but is open to parents and adults as well. Many adults find a way to keep in touch with old friends, and parents use their own accounts to monitor their children’s.

Instagram on the Hill is a huge part of the everyday lives of students, and although it holds dangers within its immense database, it is also a platform for friends to share some of their best memories. It helps preserve these memories and has become an important tool in today’s society.

As the new face of social media, Instagram can play a major role in a person’s life and even steer that life a certain way. The power it holds on the lives of students and adults alike, however, lies completely with them.

2019 Begins With ‘Skill Assessments’ Tryouts!

• Peninsula athletes began the New Year with baseball and softball tryouts in wet, cold winter weather.

All four Peninsula Little Leagues, the PVP girls’ softball league and Junior League held "skill assessments" so managers and coaches can prepare themselves for their upcoming league drafts.

Many Peninsula athletes just finished a long soccer season or are in the middle of the PVBA season when asked to field ground balls and hit three pitches with a cold metal bat.

However, everyone makes a team and everyone will have a good time this spring when the baseball and softball seasons begin in a few weeks.
