10.3 Centrifuge:

10.3.1 Due to the high speed of centrifuges, they have the potential for causing injury.
10.3.2 The most common source of injury from a centrifuge is user error. In order to prevent this, ensure the centrifuge is balanced.
10.3.2.1 If there are an uneven number of samples, blanks are to be made using a comparable material.
10.3.2.2 Ensure all samples and blanks are placed in the same test tube type.
10.3.3 When working with hazardous material, employees are to wait for ten minutes after it has completed its cycle before removing samples.
10.4 Glassware:
10.4.1 All glassware in the lab is to be used solely for its intended purpose.
10.4.2 If glassware is broken or damaged in any way, it is to be disposed of in the broken glass receptacle.
10.4.3 Broken glassware with blood or OPIM on them will be disposed of in a sharps container.
10 4 4 If an employee gets cut from broken glassware that has potentially infectious materials on it, dispose of the piece of glassware in the sharps container and follow the first aid protocol in Section 10 0: Exposure Incident

10 5 Biological Safety Cabinets (Biosafety Cabinets):
10.5.1 Airflow gauges should be checked prior to use to ensure they are working properly.
10.5.2 The air flow and circulation is to be checked by a qualified outside vendor once a year. The LF4001 Equipment Maintenance Form is to be completed after the check.
10.5.3 Extra supplies must not be stored in the biosafety cabinets. Only materials needed for immediate use should be kept in the biosafety cabinet, and then returned to a proper storage place after use.
10.5.4 Containers of chemicals or biohazardous materials should not remain open in the cabinet.
10.5.5 Move in and out of the cabinet slowly to limit the disruption of the air curtain.
10.5.6 PPE is required to be worn while working in the biosafety cabinet. This includes more protective eyewear, double gloves and aprons if necessary.
