9 2 8 Immediately remove any garment contaminated with blood or OPIM Place the garment in a biohazard container or in a plastic bag with a biohazard label

9 2 9 Garments contaminated with blood or OPIM are required to be autoclaved by authorized and trained personnel. This is to be documented via the LF3004 Autoclave Logbook.

9.2.10 All personnel are required to wear protective eyewear while working in the laboratory. This will be provided by Purity. Depending on the nature of test method or chemical being worked with, various levels of protection may be needed. All types of eyewear will be provided to personnel.

9.2.11 Other forms of PPE such as respirators, thicker gloves, face shields and smocks may be needed depending on nature of work being performed. This will be provided by Purity.

9.3 Housekeeping:

9.3.1 The clinical laboratory area will be kept neat and orderly to minimize mistakes and to ensure precision is upheld. This is also to minimize the risk of cross contamination of samples.

9.3.2 Only trained and authorized personnel are permitted to clean up spills in the clinical laboratory area. This is to ensure they are following proper safety protocols when working with blood and OPIM.

9.3.3 Work areas will be cleaned as soon as possible after working with blood or OPIM. Work areas will be cleaned with a 1:10 solution of liquid household bleach or a chemical germicide approved for use as a hospital disinfectant and effective against HIV

9 3 4 Biohazard waste will be placed in containers which are closable and constructed to all contents and prevent leakage Biohazard waste containers will be appropriately labeled or colorcoded

9 3 5 Any contaminated sharps must be discarded as soon as possible in containers that are closable, puncture-resistant and leak proof on the sides and bottoms Sharps disposal containers will be appropriately labeled or color-coded.

10.0 Equipment

10.1 All the equipment in the laboratory will be handled and equipped with proper safety precautions. These safety features must not be tampered with or disabled. However, certain pieces of equipment still are considered hazardous, so certain precautions are required to be taken against them.

10.2 Autoclaves:

10.2.1 Autoclaves can cause burns from handling hot items being taken out or from the autoclave itself while it’s running.

10.2.2 Personnel are to wear the proper PPE when using an autoclave such as oven mitts for hot items being removed or steel mesh gloves for sharps.
