Water News» Water and Sanitation Projects in Morocco to receive funding from German Water Company

M

orocco’s water and sanitation projects will receive funding from German Water Company – Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) after National Office for Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) signed a US$ 62 million financing agreements.

KfW will provide a further US$ 78,000 to finance a study related to the seawater desalination plant in Sidi Ifni. The German contribution to ONEE in the sector of drinking water and liquid sanitation amounts to US$ 940 million, ONEE pointed out.

The agreements signed by ONEE DirectorGeneral, Abderrahim El Hafidi, Director of the KfW Morocco office, Markus Faschina, and Head of Water Sector Division for North Africa, Jorg Dux, will cover several projects related to drinking water supply and sanitation.

In other news, Morocco’s National Office for Electricity and Drinking Water will invest about US$ 2.8 billion in electricity projects and US$ 2.65 billion in water projects across Morocco under its new 2019-2023 strategy.

The strategy is designed to improve access to electricity and drinking water across Morocco.

US$ 31.8 million will go towards the supply of drinking water to small and medium-sized centers. This will increase and strengthen production, pumping, transportation, storage, and distribution of drinking water for the benefit of 1.5 million people living in different regions. The city of Settat in Casablanca region will benefit from

US$ 24.5 million which will be channeled towards improving drinking water supply for the benefit of 352,000 people. ONEE noted that the financial assistance budgeted for the second phase of the small centers III sanitation program will increase by US$ 55.5 million and that the funding will help extend and rehabilitate sanitation systems in small and medium-sized cities.

A substantial percentage of the budget will go towards electricity production projects which in accordance with Morocco’s renewable energy goals will be generated from solar, hydroelectric and wind power.

Morocco intends to produce 52% renewable energy by 2050.

South Africa unveils multi-billion dollar plan to counter water shortages

outh Africa has unveiled a US$61 billion plan for the next ten years to counter water shortages by improving its water-supply and storage infrastructure.

According to the Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation ministry, more than one-third of available water is lost due to leaking pipes, aging and broken infrastructure, vandalism and contamination.

Lindiwe Sisulu – South Africa’s minister for Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation unveiled the national plan that outlines how the investment will help tackle a growing shortage of the resource.

“We need to constantly raise consciousness to preserve what we have,” said Sisulu.

With parts of the country, most notably the Eastern Cape province, experiencing the worst drought in a century, water deficit is set to worsen as scientists are forecasting further increases in average temperatures due to the greenhouse effect of unchecked carbon emissions. Cape Town almost experienced day zero in 2017.

However, the city was saved by a generous rainy season in 2018.

2015 and 2016 saw two consecutive years of drought in Cape Town, but 2017, experts anticipated a wet winter given that it would be a statistical anomaly to suffer 3 successive years of drought. It turned out to be the driest winter on record.

South Africa gets on average 465 mm of rain a year, or about half the global average and Minister Sisulu acknowledges that there is not enough water for supply the industrialized South Africa. “The demand simply outweighs the supply,” she said.

Maintenance backlogs have been exacerbated due to funding shortfalls and a failure by municipalities and other users to pay for their supplies. A separate unit will be established to finance, manage and operate the national water infrastructure, while projects that are currently in the works will be expedited, Sisulu told reporters at the unveiling of the plan.

According to Energy Research Analyst – Laura Caetano, South Africa needs to invest in infrastructure that will provide a sustainable and secure water supply in the years to come, whether desalination or wastewater treatment plants, before a return of similar drought conditions.

According to the director of water services in Turkana, Tito Ochieng, the project is in the validation stage where the investor is looking into a business plan that would see the water being sold to water companies while locals would enjoy subsidized access.

Turkana county is a drought-stricken area sitting on top of a vast reservoir of salty water. About 80% of people living in the region have no access to UN recommended 5 liters of drinking water.

he government of Kenya is in talks with Spain’s Almar Water Solutions to build a desalination plant in drought-stricken Turkana region. The desalination plant would be built on top of the Lotikipi Basin Aquifer and is expected to cost anything between US $50 million to US $96 million. The Lotikipi aquafier was discovered in 2013 with 200 billion cubic meters of water, enough to supply the entire

country’s population for 70 years but in an unfortunate turn of events, a government report in 2015 showed the water was unfit for human consumption after it was revealed that it was too saline. The Lotikipi Basin Aquifer is 4,164 square kilometers in the northwest region of Kenya extending near the borders of South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Uganda. It is situated about 300m below the surface. Government urges Kenyans to buy tanks and harvest rainwate

K

enya’s Government spokesperson Cyrus Oguna, has urged Kenyans to buy tanks and harvest rainwater for future use. In a press briefing on Tuesday, Oguna said buying water tanks will enable many people harvest the rainwater from the ongoing rains. He said this amid floods in the country following heavy rains that have been pondering parts of Kenya for several weeks now.

“Please take it upon yourself to buy your mothers a water tank as a Christmas gift, ensure that they are able to trap and store that water for future use,” he urged.

The heavy rains have wreaked havoc in parts of the country causing deaths and displacing thousands of people from their homes. Oguna said each individual should take initiative instead of waiting for the government to do its part.

Over 300,000 people have been affected by the flood, and ten counties have been adversely affected. The affected counties

are; Marsabit, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, Lamu, Turkana, Tana River, West Pokot, Kwale and Mombasa.

enya has been ranked fifth globally in an annual Bloomberg index measuring investments and opportunities in clean energy, underlining the country’s position as the centre of renewable energy in Africa.

The BloombergNEF (BNEF) latest Climatescope report says that Kenya’s rise for the first time in the global top five has been backed by the higher contribution of solar, wind and geothermal capacity into the energy mix.

These three now account for up to 65 percent of the country’s energy sources.

he Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the African Development Bank (AfDB) are working together to support a USD 154.0 million renewable energy financing framework in Zambia. Historically, Zambia has relied on hydropower generation for 90% of its energy needs. Since 2015, Zambia has faced challenges in meeting the country’s electricity demand – a challenge that is exacerbated by climate-induced droughts that limit hydroelectric generation.

To address Zambia’s power needs, the framework will deploy alternative energy sources by financing 100 MW renewable energy projects, primarily small-scale solar projects. Technical assistance will also be provided for the development of sustainable rural electrification policies and to build the capacity of domestic financial institutions to finance such projects.

GCF and AfDB signed the Funded Activity Agreement (FAA), which represents the necessary legal arrangements for the commitment of GCF’s funds. The total financing requirement for the framework is

USD 154 million. GCF is expected to provide USD 50 million in debt financing and a grant of USD 2.5 million to support the technical assistance component of the project. The proposal includes co-financing of USD 51.5 million from AfDB, as well as USD 50 million from banks and private sector investors.

Event News» IDA Announces Strategic Partnership with the Cape Town’s 2020 W12 Congress

T

he International Desalination Association has announced its strategic partnership with the City of Cape Town for the 2020 W12 Congress, to be held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre and the University of Western Cape from January 27-31, 2020.

The W12 Congress brings together city officials, academics, business executives, water experts, and students from major cities in the world that are likely to face a “Day Zero Scenario” – that is, the day water resources are completely depleted, and taps run dry.

This congress is the first of a global movement featuring important work of city governments taking radical steps to address water crises today. Major themes covered include the current situation of global climate change, the green economy, role of advanced water treatment technologies and solutions, water as business, and “Day Zero” scenarios.

As a strategic partner, the IDA will play a key role in the upcoming conference.

Current IDA President, Mr. Carlos Cosin, will deliver a keynote speech to congress

delegates, detailing how the water sector and the IDA continue to develop and promote sustainable water solutions. The partnership also furthers IDA’s growing involvement in the sub-Saharan African water market, where the 2021 World Congress will be hosted in Mombasa, Kenya.

«Industry Tips Weir Minerals outlines five tips for maintaining slurry pumps

W

eir Minerals has made available alternative options to tackle maintenance of a slurry pump, which minimises downtime through the use of ready-to-install components. While there are many options available to operators, choosing the right slurry pump maintenance strategy for a mine site requires careful consideration. The most commonly used method is in-situ, which involves the service team taking the slurry pump apart there and then. Weir Minerals explores the key benefits of different strategies for maintaining slurry pumps.

Below are five ways to maintain Warman® pumps.

In-Situ Maintenance The most common strategy is in-situ maintenance, where repairs are made and worn out components are exchanged right there on the spot. As maintenance generally involves replacing key wear components within a Warman® pump’s wet end, in-situ maintenance often requires maintenance fitters to disassemble and subsequently reassemble the entire wet-end.

This flexible approach is favoured for its lower initial cost, but is time and resource consuming during a shutdown, occupying lifting equipment and specialist maintenance fitters for up to 24 hours, depending on the work required and the pump’s size. This process also involves extensive direct man to equipment interface time.

Clamshell Maintenance Compared to performing in-situ repairs, clamshell maintenance is significantly faster. Instead of disassembling a Warman® pump and replacing each component, the entire wet-end, or clamshell, is exchanged with a spare from storage. This replacement significantly reduces the time of in-situ maintenance, freeing up vital cranes and personnel to work elsewhere during the shutdown, and reducing the impact of any unplanned maintenance required.

By simply exchanging the entire wet end of the pump on site, this method improves safety by minimising the direct interface between people and pump. Following the shutdown, the removed clamshell can be safely refurbished in a more-controlled environment, leading to a higher quality rebuild in many cases.

Clamshell maintenance doesn’t consume any additional parts when compared to insitu, although it does entail a larger initial investment to acquire the second suction cover, cover plate and frame plate which comprise a clamshell.

Bare shaft pump changeout Similar to clamshell maintenance, bare shaft pump changes out the entire Warman® pump with a pre-prepared spare. This shares the same advantages as clamshell maintenance, taking significantly less time to remove than in-situ maintenance, freeing up lifting equipment for other maintenance and minimising the potential for injuries and complications that in-situ maintenance can entail.

Bare shaft pump changeout does require extra capital investment, although that can be relatively modest when compared to the productivity gains from reduced periods of downtime compared to in-situ repairs.

Similar to clamshell changeout, following the shutdown, the removed pump can be safely refurbished in a more-controlled environment. As with other strategies, the application will determine whether the extra CAPEX is offset by OPEX reductions.

Back Pull Out (B.P.O.) Some pumps are designed for the rotating assembly to be pulled out of the overall pump casing – enabling in-situ repairs of the bearings and other internal components without disconnecting the pump from its piping. These can also have spacer sleeves attached to shaft coupling, enabling the removal of the rotating assembly without shifting the motor off the pump foundation.

In cases where only the rotating assembly requires maintenance, B.P.O. can substantially cut down the time required to perform in-situ repairs and refurbishment, although as most key wear components are located within the wet-end, it’s unusual for only the mechanical end to require work.

Technology» Kenyan techies pitch in IBM Digital Smart Water Challenge

ver 200 Kenyan student developers registered for the IBM Digital – Nation Africa: Smart Water Challenge, have ultimately submitted their proposals on design solutions to improve water quality.

The participants submitted their proposals as individuals and teams after receiving digital skills development, briefings on water-related issues in Kenya, and training

by IBM volunteers for Design Thinking and presentation skills. Drawing on the expertise of Kenya-based teams from The Nature Conservancy, Water Mission, and IBM Research-Africa, IBM has asked the developer community for solutions to improve the management, monitoring, and forecasting of water availability and quality.

The top eight proposal teams presented their pitches to IBM experts at IBM Nairobi offices where Greatest of All Time (GOAT) emerged winner with a solution that uses IoT sensors for preventative maintenance of possible water pipe bursts. The solution also uses solar power to desalinate water from two aquifers discovered in Turkana in Northern Kenya.

The GOAT team consists of five students from three Universities in Kenya asserts

that their project can help sustain tens of thousands of barrels of water per day for the largely dry Turkana region by both keeping the piping system fully functional, and desalinizing water that was previously undrinkable for human consumption.

“My hope is that this innovation will be implemented and rolled out in the northern Kenya where most people continue to suffer yet the solutions are closer home,” said One member of the team.

Each member of the winning team will be offered paid internships with IBM in Nairobi, provided they meet standard IBM internship terms and conditions. And together with expert IBMers deployed by the IBM Service Corps, Team GOAT will explore

opportunities for further development and deployment of their proposed solution to address clean water needs in Kenya.

n Ethiopian startup Triple Bottom Line (3BL) Enterprises is working on a project called Flowius, which builds tech-managed, piped water systems so “radically affordable” that rural Ethiopians living on US$1.50 a day can get water in their homes. 3BL builds low-cost piped water systems into people’s homes in rural communities by combining an engineering philosophy that has an emphasis on affordability with a network of rurallybased franchises. This is all managed by a suite of mobile tools.

The startup has been mostly self-funded, but has been selected into the USAID Development Innovation Ventures programme, which is supporting its operations for the next couple of years.

For now, it is running a pilot programme with 600 households in Wita, a town in the Gurage Zone of the SNNPR region of Ethiopia, but Turnbull-Grimes said it has plans to scale.

“First is Flowius Collect, which maps out communities without the need for surveying teams and minimal training,” Said cofounder Chris Turnbull-Grimes.

“We’re looking to expand to three more communities within the year, but we’re waiting to make sure everything is working with at our pilot project efficiently first.

Though the startup’s only revenue thus far has come from the construction of the pilot project and a small amount of operating revenue, it expects to break even by year three.

3BL has faced some fairly significant challenges in getting off the ground. “We ran into some issues importing some goods for the construction of the pilot project, which caused some delays. We also ran into some problems in construction itself. This was due to the community’s desire to use volunteer labour for a large portion of the construction.

3BL was launched with the understanding that nobody in the world wants to walk for water. “As such, the goal for most people is to have water piped to them in their homes.

There are a few reasons why this typically doesn’t happen, though.

Unfortunately, as we all know, the volunteers were often hard to organise and keep motivated over a long period of time, so it ended up causing delays and cost increases compared to using more traditional construction methods,” Turnbull-Grimes said.

First and most importantly, piped water systems are usually too expensive for rural people. Other than that, there is usually little access to skilled operators, quality

activity will not be affected by the aerobic/ anoxic environmental changes in the A/O cycle. The MBBR wastewater technology includes a number of features such as suited varying climate conditions from 8 to 40+ degree Celsius range.

The plant capacities range from 1000 litres/ day to 7 million litres/day and provides low operating cost, indoor and outdoor installation designs, completely odourless and whisper quiet, quality manufacture, and made for harsh African conditions.

KSB Pumps & Valves’ CSR: Changing lives in communities

At the reopening of the Nthoroane Clinic were KSB Pumps and Valves’ Grant Glennistor, Gerald Surjoobhalee and Patience Kotyi (far right), with Sister Thangithi Mazibuko, who is in charge of six clinics in the district.

n entire community in Mpumalanga has access to proper clinic services with clean running water and a secure environment thanks to funding from KSB Pumps and Valves.

As part of the pump manufacturer’s corporate social investment (CSI) its management decided to get behind the Nthoroane Clinic and assist with the upgrade of its facilities including the connection of its main water tank to internal facilities, the construction of a new main entrance with boom gates, car ports for 10 vehicles, handrails for the entrance and disabled toilets, as well as paving and painting of toilets and the erection of a new guard house.

According to Gerald Surjoobhalee, KSB Pumps and Valves commercial manager for its service department, and one of the drivers of the project, the company provided both funding and project management for the project.

This ensured direct involvement throughout and provided a window into the many milestones along the way. Equally rewarding was the development of local suppliers, contractors and labour who received appropriate training and gained valuable experience through direct exposure to the fundamentals of project management.

Perfect choice “The project was undertaken after KSB Germany directly supplied four new HDC 6/ 8N pumps and a further nine REL oil pumps

to Eskom. Since KSB was the sole OEM for these products, we were obliged to give something back to the local communities through our CSI efforts. This led to a decision to reinvest a percentage of the order value back into the community of Grootvlei.

“Nthoroane clinic was the perfect choice as access to quality health service is essential for every community and in this region the clinic was in desperate need of some TLC. Once the decision was made, we sprang into action and started work in October last year. By May this year all work had been wrapped up and the community is

already enjoying the benefits of their own labour,” says Gerald.

Gerald says the company is proud of the achievement as it has brought much needed relief for the community and the smiles and happiness of the community made the whole project worthwhile.

Working together “The security guards now have proper shelter when they control vehicles and the disabled patients now can use proper safe toilet facilities within the clinic. The dedicated staff now also have safe and secure parking. Inside the clinic patients now have proper taps with clean water and a backup generator ensures the lights stay on even if the power goes out. Best of all the controlled access boom gate ensures staff and patients are safe and secure.

“Having undertaken the project alongside Eskom we have learned that big businesses, like ours, can do a lot to help communities in need. Team efforts such as this one between state owned enterprises and suppliers can help build better business relationship and contribute towards healthy and happier communities in future. I believe this is the right thing to do,” says Gerald.

earing in mind the harsh conditions in mining environments where they are deployed to perform demanding duties, it is only natural that submersible pumps should have a certain set of standard features suitable for their applications. In particular, it is worth mentioning that an application for which submersible pump is engineered to perform determines its specific benefits and features. Rui Gomes, the sales and marketing director at Goodwin Africa, brings up this point, as he underscores vital factors for mine operators to consider for their submersible pump requirements and references Goodwin’s strong points in mining-specific submersible pump solutions.

Understanding benefits and features Gomes says understanding features and benefits of slurry submersible pumps specific to a dewatering application is paramount. He stresses that this is because pump features and benefits may differ in pump types as they will often have ideal applications that are best suited to some more than others.

“A typical submersible water pump will have higher efficiencies than that of a slurry submersible pump. However, a quality slurry submersible pump will be able to handle particles and concentrations of slurry that could damage a water submersible pump in seconds, with ease. Another differentiating factor is the discharge head requirement and pump capability.”

Based on this observation, Gomes emphasises that it is imperative that the pumps are accurately specified and suited to the application.

In particular, important points to take note of are: the discharge pressure, both static head and back pressure,

pipe length, as well as fittings and bends, he specifies. Equally of great importance are the application requirements in respect to the tonnage or flow required and product characteristics, he adds.

“It is worth mentioning that there are often exterior influences on all of the aforementioned aspects, which include: existing structures that the pipe work must avoid, rain water and drainage, power constraints and chemical content. So, in each case, the design and specification of the pump must account for initial set up, and, if possible, allow for some future growth or expansion,” Gomes recommends.

Critical factors when choosing submersible slurry pumps Gomes states that, ultimately, with basic knowledge of pump and benefits, one should be able to make an informed choice.

Specifically, he cites a number of essential factors to be considered when selecting the correct submersible slurry pump, whether it is for dewatering, desilting or dam cleaning.

The first point is the quantity of product that needs to be transported. The flow rate or tonnage will determine the size of the pump to start. Then the discharge head, which will determine the power required and the pump hydraulics. Equally critical, is the product characteristics, for instance, clean water, dirty water, light slurry, heavy slurry.

Shedding more light on product characteristics, Gomes indicates that, when pumping clean water with a typical submersible pump, all particles and contaminants must be kept removed. Conversely, should the concentration of slurry be higher, a slurry submersible pump will offer longevity of the wear parts and is ‘downwards’ compatible, albeit at a slight compromise in discharge pressure capabilities and efficiency losses.

The Goodwin 100DWHH: Specially engineered for demanding dewatering duty

T

he Goodwin 100DWHH dirty water high head submersible dewatering pump has been specifically designed to generate high head discharge pressures, up to 140m, which is nearly three times higher than the Goodwin 100ANZE® – Goodwin Africa’s flagship submersible slurry pump. However, the 100ANZE is able to pumps SG’s of up to 2.8kg/l, which, from Goodwin Africa’s knowledge, is a feat that no other submersible pump is capable of.

The Goodwin 100DWHH, which benefits from many of the Goodwin submersible slurry pump features, can easily handle some impurities like particles up to 10mm in diameter and even an SG of 1.1kg/l. The mechanical seal on the 100DWHH is nonpressurised as it is only subjected to the pressure from the submerged depth and not the discharge pressure of the pumped media.

Generally speaking, the Goodwin range of Slurry submersible pumps can pump high Specific Gravities up to 2.8kg/l and pass large particle of up to 75mm through its open vane impeller which has little if any chance of blocking. In addition, the patented inducer creates hydrodynamic ‘shockwaves’ that re-suspend settled product and allows the pump to pump these away. With the discharge chambers surrounding the oil filled motor housing, the heat is effectively dissipated away from the motor and allows the pump to run dry for extended periods of time.

Submersible pumps are by design less energy efficient than a split case horizontal pump due to the allowable clearances. However, a Goodwin submersible pump offers benefits that other pumps do not. As the motor housing is completely enclosed in oil, the pump is able to run dry for extended periods of time without overheating, common cause of failure with most other submersible pumps.

ose tracking is at the bottom in the pecking order of priorities in the sphere of increasing efficiency in mining. But if mining companies are really hell-bent on realising value across-the-board in their operations, every available avenue to accomplish this has to be fully exploited.

Usually, in situations where they outsource hydraulic hose management, mines have separate service providers managing the most critical drivers behind fleet uptime and fire risk, namely Hydraulic Hose, Fuel/Lube Management and Fire Suppression. Sadly, Bouwer laments, none of these services are currently provided by a single service provider and they are certainly not managed proactively. Unsurprisingly, as a result, when things go wrong there is a tendency to pass the buck. For instance, nobody takes responsibility for downtime or a fire because the hose supplier blames the fire system and the fire service provider blames a leaking hose.

The overlooked cost of downtime Underscoring the importance of sound hydraulic hose management, Bouwer indicates that hydraulic hose failure can lead to downtime in processes that are dependent on the condition or performance of hydraulic hoses. This always has a huge impact than always assumed. “Our data suggests that the poor management or lack of management of hydraulic hose and fittings is responsible for more than 60% of fleet downtime on an average mine,” Bouwer reveals.

Effective approach

Cognisant that outsourcing hose management is now the standard practice in industry, in this context, it is only fair to focus on this area. Relating to outsourcing, it is requisite that the respective service provider understands the intricacies of hydraulic hose management, before delivering a solution specific to the client. World Bank: Water quality crisis a global health challenge The study shows how a combination of bacteria, sewage, chemicals, and plastics can suck oxygen from water supplies and transform water into poison for people and ecosystems.

he World Bank, in a report recently released, has warned that poor water quality is becoming a global threat to humans and environmental well-being.

The report, “Invisible Crisis of Water Quality” states that the world is facing an invisible water quality crisis with much wider, deeper impacts, and more uncertain than previously thought.

“While much attention has focused on water quantity – too much water, in the case of floods; too little water, in the case of droughts – water quality has attracted significantly less consideration,” read part of the report. The report calls for urgent attention to be given to the hidden dangers lying beneath the waters’ surface.
