Netzsch expands its pump portfolio with peristaltic pumps

A

s a specialist for positive displacement pumps, Netzsch is now supplementing the wellknown progressing cavity, rotary lobe and screw pumps with peristaltic pumps.

“Thanks to the supplementary product group, we can cover even the most complex applications in a wide variety of areas. «Pipes & Fittings Linatex Hose Reduces Downtime And Operating Costs At NAMDEB

T

he installation by Weir Minerals Africa of a Linatex® 808 hard wall rubber hose with wear indicator system is reducing downtime and operating costs at Namdeb’s Sendelingsdrift treatment plant in Namibia.

The challenge facing Sendelingsdrift was that it was changing out the incumbent competitor’s rubber hoses every four weeks due to excessively high wear rates. In addition to the ongoing downtime, the plant also risked losing concentrate due to the hose failures. As the concentrate media contains diamonds, additional security was required when dealing with hose failures that result in concentrate leakage – adding to the costs.

The Weir Minerals Africa service teams regularly visited Sendelingsdrift to engage with the plant manager, area engineers and other operational staff to get a better understanding of their requirements and problematic applications. After an audit of the site, the team considered all the parameters and proposed a trial of a Linatex® 808 rubber hose fitted with a wear indicator system.

The proposed solution would be capable of withstanding the slurry flow rate of 84 l/s with a slurry density of 2,65 t/m³. The wear

indicator system installed on the hose would indicate when the hose was nearing the end of its life; no physical inspections would be necessary.

In addition, Sendelingsdrift would save the cost of additional security requirements by eliminating premature hose failures.

Sendelingsdrift agreed to the proposed trial, and the Weir Minerals Africa service team conducted weekly site visits to inspect the hose and the wear indicator system. While the competitor hose generally failed after delivering 32,000 tonnes of ore, the trial showed that the Linatex® 808 rubber hose surpassed 162,000 tonnes.

The hose lasted seven and a half months before being replaced, which was more than six times longer than the competitor’s hose – representing a significant cost saving for the customer. The Linatex® rubber hose processed over 2,5 million tonnes of concentrate and a similar volume of slurry during this time.

«Pipes & Fittings Megapipes HDPE culvert for new road that is set to give minority community easier access to essential services

C

onstruction of the Ogiek Secondary School Road which is nearly complete is set to transform the Ogiek community by giving them easier access to schools, hospitals, and other local amenities.

The road, which is being constructed by the Nakuru County Government, will bridge two parts of the Ogiek communal land and eliminate the need to use a 3-kilometre detour to get to the main tarmac road, that gives access to Nessuit Centre, where most services are located.

Additionally, the road will make it easier for the over 7,000 Ogiek community to transport vegetables, fruits, milk, and other farm produce to the main trading centre.

“The Weholite culvert is durable and efficient in ensuring water is channeled properly so that traffic can flow without disruptions.

Additionally, the lightweight construction of Weholite pipes enabled us to install these culverts and get traffic moving, in less than a day, with minimal disruptions,” said Robert Maina of Megapipes Solutions.

Nakuru County, which is the pioneering the use of this technology, said that the durable nature of the culverts will enable the Ogiek community in Nessuit to have increased accessibility to essential services and a ready market with minimal disruptions.

“The Weholite culverts are durable and environmentally friendly. The culverts were easily transported without any breakages unlike their concrete equivalents, this is the future of road construction,” said Eng. Reuben Maritim, Nakuru County Executive Committee Member Roads.

Why is Africa the next renewables powerhouse?

T

he business of energy – Africa beckons is the theme of the African Energy Indaba 2022, which will consider how Africa can lead the globe in scaling up and producing renewable energy. The 14th African Energy Indaba Conference (AEI), a hybrid model of virtual discussion and debate (1-3 March 2022) with an in-person physical Exhibition (1-2 March 2022) at the CITCC in Cape Town, will discuss and debate how Africa’s rapid economic development has created a substantial energy challenge.

Energy is one of the African Development Bank’s top five objectives to achieve universal access by 2025. The plan includes expanding grid power by 160 GW and connecting 130 million people to the energy infrastructure. In addition, the Bank aims to connect 75 million people to off-grid systems and provide 150 million households with access to clean cooking energy. The African Development Bank is also working with African countries to transform their energy utility sectors and attract investment in new energy markets.

Africa has an almost unlimited potential of solar capacity (10 TW), abundant hydro (350 GW), wind (110 GW), and geothermal energy sources (15 GW). Decisions will have a long-term impact on the continent’s energy economy. However, the time has come to ensure that the proper energy mix is implemented to find a long-term solution to meet rising energy consumption.

According to the International Energy Agency report, renewable energy would account for more than half of Sub-Saharan Africa’s increase in power output by 2040.

600 million people live without access to electricity in Sub-Saharan Africa. This energy poverty across the continent holds back African economic development and costs the continent 2% and 4 % of GDP annually. Only 10% of Sub-Saharan Africa’s hydropower capacity is utilised.

Sub-Saharan Africa will begin to unlock its immense renewable energy resources over the next 26 years, with solar energy leading to the growth in renewables in the region.

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) evaluates that renewable energy capacity in Africa could reach 310 GW by 2030, putting the continent

at the forefront of renewable energy generation globally. The African Union advocated that member states, regional and multilateral bodies incorporate the principle of Clean Energy Corridors into national renewable climate and energy agendas.

There are various regional initiatives aimed at fast-tracking the growth of renewable energy capacity and crossborder renewable energy exchange:Geothermal energy is becoming the second-largest power source, primarily in Kenya and Ethiopia. Solar photovoltaics, small hydropower, and wind will fuel two-thirds of mini-grid and then offgrid systems in rural areas by 2040.

A lack of energy has been one of the key factors that have hindered the region’s economic development.”

Africa is a climate-resilient and low-carbon continent but needs a renewable energy revolution. Africa can achieve its renewable energy potential with attractive investment opportunities on the continent by facilitating climate-resilient infrastructure, climatesmart agriculture, and the sustainable management of natural resources.

he Africa Energy Indaba (AEI) has been in a long-term strategic partnership with the South African Electrotechnical Export Council (SAEEC) with the joint purpose of increasing understanding of and accelerating growth in Africa’s rapidly changing and lucrative energy space. For years, the innovative partnership has leveraged the respective strengths of both entities to create compelling value for those with an interest in Africa’s evolving energy sector. Established in 2000, the SAEEC is a public-private partnership between The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) and the private sector in the electrotechnical sector The SAEEC’s mandate is to facilitate the internationalisation trade member companies, increase export sales and profile South Africa’s competence in the electrotechnical sector. The competence of member companies are in various subsectors including electrical engineering where companies manufacture goods and provide services in the generation, distribution, and transmission space of electricity.

Other sectors represented are in ITC, telecoms and electronics.

SAEEC member companies have a proven track record of providing a wide range of electricity infrastructure products and services across Africa. They are highly regarded as solution providers for power and telecommunications infrastructure projects across the continent. South African firms conform to global standards and are partners of choice in enabling Africa to meet the continent’s needs.

ustainability has become a major investment focus. News headlines frequently point to how investors are sidestepping old energy sources such as coal, favouring greener and more sustainable alternatives. According to the US Forum for Sustainable and Responsible Investment (US SIF), the size of the US sustainable investment since 1995 has increased more than 25-fold, today totaling portfolios worth $16.6 trillion. Perhaps more impressive is that this total has grown from $11.6 trillion in 2018, showing sustainability investment is accelerating.

Sustainability comes in many forms, and it can range from resources to production to who companies hire. Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investment is a big priority related to the strategies of many organisations. Energy is arguably the leading area that attracts sustainability investments, especially since it relates heavily to carbon levels and climate change concerns. Yet, for all the positivity towards sustainability, the world is developing a blind spot for a particular resource - water.

If you look at comments and stories around sustainable investment, water does not feature often. When it does, it’s usually around pollution and tends to be grouped with air quality. Yet, that doesn’t capture how multifaceted water is in today’s world.

For example, there is a direct correlation between water availability and energy generation - not just in terms of hydrogeneration, but cooling and other technical requirements. Water is also a critical part of agriculture and food security, and a primary topic around urbanisation.

Then why isn’t water as firmly on the agenda as other sustainability topics? The likely answer is that we take the resource for granted. Cheap and easy access to water convinces us that it’s not threatened. Water shortages are still much rarer than power blackouts - though that is changing. The stories of drought impacting cities such as Cape Town and Chennai, or entire states like California, are becoming more frequent.

Companies are taking note. According to a research note from Barclays released a few months ago, water scarcity is “the most important environmental concern” for the

global consumer staples sector. A growing number of large enterprises worry about water access, a topic that is rising to the top of risk registers - especially since there is real cause to believe that climate change will be a risk multiplier around water issues.

Barclays estimated that freshwater demand for food cultivation will increase 40% by 2030, and the consumer staples sector can expect a cost impact of at least $200 billion.

Costs are already rising: the average cost of water in 30 major US cities rose by 60% between 2010 and 2019. The bank concludes that water should be the leading ESG concern.

Fortunately, there is a lot we can do to improve water availability. Established water infrastructure can benefit tremendously from modern digital enhancements such as smart metering, small leak detection and wastewater recycling.

Communities can be a part of the solution if we introduce them to sustainable water practices and help them appreciate and take charge of local conservation efforts.

Agriculture can adopt more sustainable water practices - a particular opportunity for South Africa’s growing smallholder farming industry. Environmental efforts to remove thirsty alien plants, rehabilitate wetlands and replenish aquifers will significantly improve water resources.

Above all, water sustainability is a culture.

We must use opportunities to promote and amplify the importance and delicacy of water to each person, encouraging them to look at their water habits. Imagine if someone just left taps running - it would get under most people’s skins. We can explore ways to expand that attitude into other areas of water preservation.

If we don’t treat water sustainability as a priority, it will assert itself. If you think the world stops turning when the power goes out, imagine what happens when taps run dry. We can still light a candle, but we can’t encourage a trickle from a tap. Barclays put it best: “Water should be considered the largest driver of environmental concern for the staples sector,” and water is likely to have “a greater financial impact on the sector than carbon reduction strategies”. www.pumps-africa.com

Merits of mechanical and digital options in dosing pumps

osing pumps play an important role in many industries from mining and wastewater treatment to pharmaceuticals and food production – and are available in a growing range of mechanical and digital options.

“Choosing the right pump starts with understanding the respective areas where mechanical and digital dosing pumps excel,” says Tshephang Sithole, sales engineer - water treatment at global pump specialist Grundfos. “While high flows and high pressures might be prioritised in some applications, for instance, other users need to focus on accuracy or remote-control functionality.”

Sithole points out that many industrial applications such as water treatment plants or mining will tend to need a robust solution that delivers large volumes of water at pressures of up to 150 bar. There are

Digital dosing pumps, by contrast, come with a range of features that make them most suitable for automated plants or where higher levels of monitoring and control are required, including remote functions.

Grundfos has been a pioneer of digital dosing for over 20 years.

“Automation functions are particularly valuable for companies who have plants in different parts of the country,” he says.

“If loadshedding leads a pump to trip, for instance, an alarm will notify the user, and they can remotely reset and restart the operation.”

They are also preferred where accuracy of dosing quantities is prioritised, or where dosing volumes are very small. Some digital dosing pumps boast high turn-down ratios as low as 1:3,000, and can deliver pressures of down to 0,002 bar.

“They can even pick up leaks in the line, and will help prevent liquid losses by automatically alerting the operator,” he says.

The automatic de-aeration function is another valuable element in advanced digital dosing pumps, allowing them to detect and remove bubbles from a line.

This is important as bubbles will impair the accuracy of dosing.

Miners top energy tips to net zero

Another example Aggreko was working on, Mr Saffy said, was a hybrid solar and thermal power solution for the Salares Norte open pit mine in Chile.

“It is a ground-breaking solution designed to provide power for the entire mine, which sits at an altitude of 4,500m in the Andes mountain range and is 190km from the nearest town,” Mr Saffy said.

“Once complete the hybrid power plant is expected to achieve $7.4 million in cost of energy savings over the next decade a further $1.1 million in carbon tax offset over the life of the mine, in addition to 104,000 tonnes of carbon emissions savings.

standards as well as Gold Fields’ requirement for a minimum of 20% renewable power generation for mining operations.” Mr Saffy said the pathways to decarbonisation that held the most appeal for miners currently included: Hybrid power plants (as mentioned): These combine renewables (e.g., solar, wind) with thermal generation and battery storage, benefiting areas with limited or no access to permanent power. These are generally cost-competitive. Once solar or wind plants are installed, their generation running costs are relatively low and at zero emissions.

Virtual gas pipelines: Gas power generation offers a greener and more cost-effective alternative to diesel and heavy fuel oil. A virtual pipeline is a substitute, and an alternative, for a physical pipeline.

Gas is instead transported as LNG or CNG to the point of use by sea, road, or rail. For mines not connected to a physical pipeline and looking to switch to gas from diesel, a virtual pipeline model simply imitates their current supply solution.

For users who are connected to a gas pipeline but are looking to supplement insufficient or unreliable pipeline capacity, the virtual power plant solution has several advantages over diesel.

Renewable energy: Renewable energy power systems are an effective way of tapping into natural resources to provide power, such as wind farms, hydro power and solar. The challenge is their reliability on weather, hence why if power is interrupted for any reason it is important to ensure they’re backed by with batteries or a temporary thermal power solution.

A significant future fuel in this space will be hydrogen. Investment in hydrogen is on the rise too because of the role it can play in supporting a global transition to net-zero. Its versatility and compatibility with existing furnaces, engines and generators make it particularly appealing for the mining industry. Businesses around the world are at the beginning of their hydrogen journeys and need to be supported to find the best ways of integrating it into their operations.

Mr Saffy said energy sources likely to become more prevalent in mining during the next 10 years included biofuels (would become less expensive), hydropower, energy storage (such as pumped, mechanical flywheel), and gas generation which runs with a hybrid renewable system. While it is increasingly utilised now as power source, wind and solar power is expected to gain more momentum.

Aggreko is also experimenting with mobile wind solutions, redeployable solar panels and tidal wave power (though tidal wave power might not be for the mining industry yet). The company is also accelerating its investments in hydrogen technology.

Trials are underway in Europe on two different technologies, where Aggreko is collaborating with lead customers and partners trialing hydrogen generators and fuel cell battery hybrids.

“It’s a very exciting time in the mining sector, and it will be amazing to see the innovations presented during the next few years as miners and energy companies collaborate and come up with new ideas for a greener future,” Mr Saffy said.

“The key though is to start now – you can embrace renewables now into your energy mix because, done correctly, cost and emission savings can be greatly reduced without compromising reliability.”

Aggreko has its own net-zero goals by 2050 and has a 2030 target to reduce diesel use in its customer solutions by 50%.

he effects of rapid urbanization in Africa and across the world, has caused domestic and industrial wastewater to be released into the environment with only basic treatment, causing significant consequences to humans and wildlife.

Several organic compounds in municipal wastewater are detected in various types of wastewater, affecting human health, water quality, and the biodiversity of ecosystems worldwide.
