Kenya launches Nairobi sewerage improvement program

T

he Government of Kenya has launched the second phase of Nairobi Sewerage Improvement Program set to be completed in 2023. The launch follows the successful implementation of the first phase which increased sanitation coverage from 40 per cent in 2012 to 48 per cent by 2017 for improved public health and sustainable environment.

Funded by the Government of Kenya (GoK), the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the French Development Agency (FDA) to a tune of US $101 million, the second phase will contribute to the realization of Kenya’s Big Four Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goal 6 which has committed to ensure universal and equitable access to safe and affordable water for all, access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all and an end to open defecation

“The planned investment will enhance the provision of reliable, safe, and sustainable urban sanitation services in Nairobi City with a view of contributing to improved access and increased economic activities,” Nnenna said.

«Water News KwaZulu-Natal Water projects on course

T

he Department of Water and Sanitation in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, has stated that the KwaZuluNatal Water projects are on course and that its commitment to implement long-term measures to address water scarcity issues in different parts of the province is still on.

Department spokesperson Sputnik Ratau said the KwaZulu-Natal Water projects are on course with the implementation of the Greytown Bulk Water Supply, which is set to provide emergency water relief and long-term water supply to Greytown and Enhlalakahle. Ratau said Phase 1 of the project included refurbishing and upgrading aging water infrastructure, unclogging drainage systems and the installation of new interconnecting pipes with valve chambers to restore water treatment works to an estimated peak capacity of 6 mega litres per day.

“I can confirm that Phase 1 of the project was successfully implemented and completed in

September 2010. We are now rolling out the implementation of Phase 2, which entails the extension of the Greytown Water Treatment Works (WTWs) by 7 megalitres per day.

“The total capacity of the WTW will then be 13 megalitres per day,” Ratau said. Phase 2 will also include the development of abstraction works at Craigie Burn Dam, raw water pump stations, and bulk conveyance between Craigie Burn Dam and Greytown WTW for capacity of 12 megalitres per day to 16 megalitres per day.

“What this means is that there will be additional potable water storage to maintain specific hours of storage capacity and achieve spatial balance of bulk delivery with the growth of the town.

“This will be through a 2.5-megalitre reservoir at Greytown WTW, an additional 2.5-megalitre reservoir at Enhlalakahle Reservoir and the rehabilitation of the existing 2.5-megalitre Enhlalakahle

Ghana signs green loan for solar-powered water project

S

outh Africa has unveiled a US$61 billion plan for the next ten years to counter water shortages by improving its water-supply and storage infrastructure.

Algeria is planning to construct three seawater desalination plants in the Algiers, Annaba and Skikda provinces so as to increase the supply and access of drinking water to the residents. Ghana has secured US $36 million green loan from the UK government to bolster solar-powered water project in rural Ghana.

The solar-powered water project set to begin in September will use a technology developed by UK-based firm Aqua Africa, to sterilise drinking water for communities in Ghana. An agreement between Aqua Africa and Ghana’s sanitation and water resources ministry saw the country secure the direct UK Export Finance (UKEF) loan in support of a project that is aiming to alleviate clean water stress for about 225,000 people in Ghana.

According to the project partners, the first phase will see filtration units deployed to deliver water to about 225,000 people starting January next year and five further phases will subsequently see the project deliver the rollout of the water pipe systems to the remaining 200,000 people, while deploying smart metering and cashless payment systems to provide income from water sales by mid-2022.

In one village, in the southwest of South Sudan, Aqua Africa has managed to pumps water from the groundwater table using a solar powered off grid system.

The water flows up into a water tower and down to five distribution points that can provide drinking water to 2,500 people daily. The solar off grid system is equipped with batteries, which allows the water supply system to serve the population several hours after the sun goes down.

Ghana’s Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Dapaah was optimistic that the green loan would play a key role in the push to deliver on the UN Sustainable Development Goals covering climate action, clean water, and sanitation.

G

lobal water technology company Xylem Africa has announced the appointment of Gregory Bloom as the new Rental Manager for Xylem Africa and Max Kubwalo as Metrology Sales Lead for Anglophone Africa.

Gregory was appointed in May 2020 to head the company’s rental division in Africa where he will be responsible for providing water solutions for a variety of applications while Kubwalo started in July 2020 to cover the English-speaking countries in SubSaharan Africa.

The company serves customers in a range of sectors, from construction and mining to agriculture and infrastructure. Applications include dewatering, underground drainage, fly ash removal, temporary fire pumps, and sludge removal.

Bloom, a sales expert, has 22 years of experience in the sector where he has worked in a number of roles across several industries, including automotive and security. He served as National Operations Manager and Sales Representative at South African purified water provider Aquazania before going on to hold key managerial positions at Eazi Access Rental, CC Crane Hire, and SkyJacks.

Kubwalo joins Xylem from Itron, an American technology company that offers products and services on energy and water resource management. While at Itron, he established a remarkable reputation among the utility markets of Southern and Eastern Africa.

The two leaders are gems that Xylem will find resourceful in their operations and expansion plans in Africa.

Described by Xylem as ‘process driven and a prolific supporter of his teams’, Bloom is a Diploma holder in Advanced Business Management from Damelin and Project Management from Varsity College. He has also completed the Gordon Institute of Business Science’s Executive Development Programme and Finance for Non-Financial Managers Programme.

On the other hand, with nearly 20 years in the Metrology industry – Kubwalo’s experience in sales is a solid record in the water management industry. His track record includes responsibility for projects exceeding US $10 million. He has built extensive experience and knowledge around leading brands such as Sensus.

According to Kubwalo, the work done by local management and their channel partners as well as Xylem’s work with water impressed him hence, he opted to join the company. He says Water is a critical resource and Xylem’s efforts to assist utilities reduce their losses and improve their efficiencies while providing cleaner and easier access to water – is his motivation to be part of the company.

Kubwalo is a Bachelor of Science degree holder in Aeronautical Engineering and also a Post Graduate Diploma holder in Industrial Engineering both from Wits University.

Kubwalo is expected to vigorously continue pursuing existing key accounts in the

Biwater to build new facility in Morocco The design and construction contract is already underway with earthworks in progress.

O

ffice National de l’Electricité et de l’Eau Potable (ONEE) has awarded Biwater a turn-key contract to design and construct a new wastewater treatment plant in the coastal town of Tarfaya in Southern Morocco.

The design and construction contract is already underway with earthworks in progress. Biwater’s team are providing a fast-track construction programme to reduce the ecological impact of raw sewage along the coast.

Yassine Laib, Biwater’s Country Manager for Morocco, said, “This project is part of the country’s efforts to clean the coast of Tarfaya and protect the environment from the effects of wastewater discharged. The project will use treatment processes to meet the people’s need for wastewater treatment in this region.” indar The new facility will provide pre-treatment, biological treatment and advanced tertiary treatment, including ultraviolet disinfection

and sludge dewatering. The drying beds will be designed to reduce the sewage sludge to dry solids content, which will be safely transferred off site for its disposal.

Following construction, Biwater will provide 12 months of operational assistance and maintenance to the local workforce.

Mr. Laib added, “After the successful commissioning of similar projects in Tamuda Bay, Khenifra, Aourir and Boukhalef, we are proud to continue our long-standing work to improve sanitation conditions for all across Morocco. Biwater therefore looks forward to delivering another turn-key solution that will serve the residents of Tarfaya and support the clean-up of its coastline.”

Kenyan firm plans huge cold chain facility in East Africa

Pre-drilling When drilling Water borehole, it is usual to start the process with a geological survey and vertical electrical sounding to locate water underground.

The VES sounding attempts to map the availability of water by taking resistivity measurements using probes at a set distance apart. In most countries, a borehole drilling permit and environmental report is required before commencing drilling.

For example, Osiligi Charity Projects, a non-governmental organization running charity projects in rural Kenya, recently sunk a borehole in a school it manages, to run throughout on green technology so they settled for solar powered Lorentz pumping system.

Drilling A drilling rig is required for the drilling. As the drill progresses into the ground, extra drill rods are added until eventually the drill reaches the required depth.

Cost of drilling a borehole Borehole drilling in every country has unique processes involved from conception to delivery and the combination of factors that impact the components and processes used will almost always be different.

A geologist is needed to supervise the drilling process; always engage qualified geologist and personnel. They ensure boreholes are drilled straight for correct procedures like steel casing and gravel filter pack fitting are followed.

Therefore, borehole drilling cost is not a constant and specific amount on paper. A carefully calculated quotation must be drawn and particular costing needs affected by different conditions must be considered.

During my few years of experience in the power transmission sector, and while closely communicating with customers and end users I identified 3 causes of gearboxes failures.

This thin layer of oil prevents a metal to metal contact between the gears during their engagement. During the gearbox lifetime the oil quantity and quality can change depending on the applications and regular service intervals. Sealed and protected from external pollutants, that can affect the oil quality is a good method to ensure the health of the gearbox, a yearly oil change is recommended to allow for optimal lubrication.

1. Alignment of the gearbox on the

application This first cause of gearbox failure is purely mechanical, gears being designed to work in a certain configuration and backlash settings for each gear tooth, that when misaligned can cause a concentration of loads on a part of the gear, housing, bearings or other weaker part of the gearbox and induce premature failure. indar The identification of misalignment can be done during the maintenance period throughout the lifetime of the gearbox.

Before failure, the healthier way to process is to ensure the right mounting of the gearbox during the installation in a new application or after the servicing of some of the machine’s components. I also advice a regular control of the gearbox alignment by external service companies.

2. Lubrication of the gearbox

Exposed to external conditions these operators are regularly forced to stop their operation in emergency due to rain, electrical outages, feeder overloads etc.

During these emergency stop events, heavy loads are applied to the output shafts, torque arms and backstop devices. Fully loaded a conveyor, mixer or shredder is demanding an extra effort to the geared motors until it gets to the requested operating speed. Soft start devices and adapted automation can reduce the overload and mitigate the efforts made by the gearboxes.

Often exposed to harsh working condition, the gearboxes also suffer from overload and operating mistakes. Gearboxes are initially supplied with the right configuration and service factor to offer optimal working and enhanced performance.

Unfortunately, it is hard to identity a damaged gearbox in such noisy environment, at the same time the gearbox rarely shows noise or vibration difference until it is too late. At this stage the operating temperature of the gearbox remain a good factor to identify potential failures that sometimes take years to appear.

6 types of flow control valves and how they work

valve is a mechanical device that blocks a pipe either partially or completely to change the amount of fluid that passes through it. When you turn on a faucet (tap) to brush your teeth, you’re opening a valve that allows pressurized water to escape from a pipe. Valves regulate gases as well as liquids.

There are countless types of valves for use across a variety of industries and applications. When it comes to flow control valves, valve types range from simple to sophisticated; some valves are complex enough to adjust automatically to pressure and temperature variations. No matter their construction, flow control valves are designed to regulate the flow or pressure of fluids, and they typically react to signals generated by flow meters or temperature gauges.

Gate Valve Gate valves are shutoff valves that are best used in a fully open or fully closed position.

The main parts of the gate valve consist of the valve body, seat, disc, stem, gland, and handle. The seat and stem are the major components that perform the shutting off of the media. Gate valves are not great fluid regulators as these kinds of valves are prone to valve disc vibration. These vibrations cause damage to the disc.

Non Return Valve Non-return valves only allow the media to flow in one direction. This kind of valve is installed in the pipe where conditions may cause reversed flow due to changes in pressure.

There are many different kinds of nonreturn valves. Some of these are spring-loaded type, swing type, and the clapper type.

Nonreturn valves are often associated with backflow prevention in water systems.

Ball Valve Ball valves are one of the commonly used valves in industrial applications. These are quarter-turn valves that are often used to isolate or shutoff media.

Ball valves can either be trunnion-mounted or floating, based on the ball disc design. Ball valves can be also be classified depending on body style. These can be made of a single body, split body or top entry.

Pressure Relief Valve Pressure relief valves are sometimes known as safety relief valves. These valves are designed to open at a preset pressure level and relieve the valve of excess pressure.

How fire pumps work in firefighting systems A firefighting system is the most important of the various industries services, as its aim is to protect human life and property.

A

fire pump is the component responsible for supplying the adequate water pressure to fire sprinklers and hose standpipes in order to control or contain a fire. Fire pumps play a vital role as the first response to a fire situation, saving countless lives and property from destruction. They are usually found in manufacturing and industrial facilities, housing complexes, power plants, schools, hospitals, airports, commercial buildings and offshore oil platforms.

A firefighting system is, therefore, the most important of the various industries services, as its aim is to protect human life and property, strictly in that order.

But what does a firefighting system consists? There are 3 parts to it: a large

store of water in tanks, either underground or on top of the building, called fire storage tanks, a specialized pumping system and a large network of pipes ending in either hydrants or sprinklers (nearly all buildings require both of these systems).

Fire pumps Fire pumps are usually housed in a pump room very close to the fire tanks. The key thing is that the pumps should be located at a level just below the bottom of the fire tank, so that all the water in the tanks can flow into the pumps by gravity.

There is also a fourth type of pump called a jockey pump. This is a small pump attached to the system that continually switches on to maintain the correct pressure in the distribution systems, which is normally 7 Kg/cm2 or 100 psi. If there is a small leakage somewhere in the system, the jockey pump will switch on to compensate for it. Each jockey pump will also have a backup.

Like all important systems, there must be backup pumps in case the main pump fails.

and switch the fire pumps on. But the only way to switch off a fire pump is for a fire fighter to do this manually in the pump room. This is an international code of practice that is designed to avoid the pumps switching off due to any malfunction in the control system. The capacity of the pumps is decided by considering a number of factors, some of which are: • the area covered by hydrants / standpipes and sprinklers • the number of hydrants and sprinklers • the assumed area of operation of the sprinklers • the type and layout of the building The distribution system consists of steel or galvanized steel pipes that are painted red. These can be welded together to make secure joints, or attached with special clamps. When running underground, they are wrapped with a special coating that prevents corrosion and protects the pipe.

Types of distribution systems There are basically two types of distribution systems.

Automatic Wet systems: These are networks of pipes filled with water connected to the

pumps and storage tanks. The networks of pipes are filled with pressurized air instead of water. When a fire fighter opens a hydrant, the pressurized air will first rush out.

The pressure sensors in the pump room will detect a drop-in pressure, and start the water pumps, which will pump water to the system, reaching the hydrant that the fire fighter is holding after a gap of some seconds. This is done wherever there is a risk of the fire pipes freezing if filled with water, which would make them useless in a fire.

Manual distribution systems: These systems have an inlet for fire engines to pump water into the system. Once the fire engines are pumping water into the distribution system, fire fighters can then open hydrants at the right locations and start to direct water to the fire. The inlet that allows water from the fire engine into the distribution system is called a Siamese connection.

In high-rise buildings it is mandatory that each staircase have a wet riser, a vertical firefighting pipe with a hydrant at every floor. It is important that the distribution system be designed with a ring main, a primary loop that is connected to the pumps

so that there are two routes for water to flow in case one side gets blocked.

In more complex and dangerous installations, high and medium velocity water-spray systems and foam systems (for hazardous chemicals) are used. The foam acts like an insulating blanket over the top of a burning liquid, cutting off its oxygen. Special areas such as server rooms, the contents of which would be damaged by water, use gas suppression systems. In these an inert gas is pumped into the room to cut off the oxygen supply of the fire.

Could forests in African tropics be burning more than Brazil?

When the wildfire engulfed part of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil, a global outcry ensued.

But new data now shows forests in the African tropics also catch fire

W

hen it comes to wildfires, the spotlight has been on Amazon forest or Australia which recently experienced massive bushfires. But data released by NASA this week shifts the attention to Sub-Saharan Africa.

According to NASA’s satellite images, the size of the forest fires in central Africa appears alarmingly large. It looks like a red chain, with fires extending from Angola across Congo and Mozambique to Madagascar, similar to the flames in Brazil’s Amazon that have triggered global outcry.

The NASA satellite is said to have detected 6902 fires in Angola and 3395 in Congo.

However, in Brazil, 2127 fires were detected during the same period. According to this, Brazil ranked only third according to the current number of fires, said US media company Bloomberg.

But to some, fire is an essential part of the savannah.

“The first thing to know is that the impact of a wildfire depends more on where and what it is burning, than on how big it is, or indeed

how many fires there are,” says ecologist Colin Beale.

Moreover, he says, fires are usually lit by cattle farmers as part of their traditional management of the savannahs where their animals graze. Some fires are started to stimulate new growth of nutritious grass for their animals, others are used to control the numbers of parasitic ticks or manage the growth of thorny scrub.

in Tanzania known worldwide for its safari animals and wildebeest migration burn each year. His sentiments are shared by Angolan minister for environment Paula Francisca Coelho.

“What is currently happening in Angola are small slash-and-burn operations, mostly on arable land. These are traditionally carried out by the rural population to prepare the fields for the next season,” said Coelho.

Carbon emissions But African wildfires regardless of size come with a costly phenomenon-Carbon emission. The explanation to this issue depends on who you ask. In 2016, authors of a science journal Nature Communications said that Africa’s tropical land released close to 6bn tonnes of CO2.

The emissions were blamed on substantial land-use change including deforestation and fires associated with agriculture. The journal also blamed “strong” El Niño as the major contributor of carbon emissions. El Niño is a natural phenomenon that periodically affects weather in many parts of the world.

In the African tropics, it can cause unusually high temperatures and drought.

To others fires are a natural cycle in the Savannah because much of the vegetation that burns in the dry season grows back in the rainy one, he said.

“It’s a relatively carbon-neutral process, and it’s something that does happen every year, and in fact, what we see with the fire season is that it oscillates between northern tropical Africa and southern tropical Africa every six months or so,” says Mark Parrington a Copernicus researcher.

Nevertheless, for World leaders like president Emmanuel Macron African fires are something worth looking into just like the Amazon fire. G7 nations have pledged $20 million on the Amazon, mainly on firefighting aircraft.

One of the countries that have openly sought for help to tackle wild fires is Madagascar.

Fires razed more than 1,300 hectares (3,200 acres) of forestland in Madagascar’s Ankarafantsika National Park in August and September — four times the size of

New York City’s Central Park.The park, in northwestern Madagascar, is home to the country’s fast-disappearing dry deciduous forests. Less than 5 percent of the country’s original dry forests survive today. The park also includes swamp forests and riparian forests that adjoin water bodies.

Farming activities The fires have been associated with farmers who burn vegetation on arable land ahead of a planting season.

“Every year, around 120,000 hectares [297,000 acres] of forest disappear, mostly as a result of slash-and-burn farming,” Alexandre Georget, Madagascar’s environment minister, told Deutsche Welle, Germany’s international broadcaster.

“If the destruction continues at this rate, Madagascar will be completely deforested in 40 years.”

The government has tried to educate farmers on the dangers of this practice with little success. Authorities are now arresting villagers burning land. The government also plans to use security forces to fight fires in parks and other protected areas in Madagascar.

“Fighting fires is one of our priorities. We are calling on everyone who can help us, especially European countries,” Georget said in the interview with Deutsche Welle published in September. “We urgently need fire-fighting aircraft because, at the moment, we are unable to react quickly and effectively to fires.”

Fire Management For Sally Archibald from Centre for African Ecology, School of Animal, Plant and Environmental Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, fire management is key in tackling frequent bushfires in Africa.

“Human impacts on fire regimes accumulated slowly with the evolution of modern humans able to ignite fires and manipulate landscapes, “She says.

“Modern fire management challenges involve balancing the needs of a large rural population against national and global perspectives on the desirability of different types of fire, but this cannot happen unless

the interests of all parties are equally represented, “she adds.

Sally puts human activities at the centre of most fires in Africa especially the savannah fires.

“In Africa, ignition numbers increase fairly linearly with population density as humans start living in closer proximity to each other.

Ultimately, she says, when it comes to Africa, the focus should be shifted from how much burns, to how it burns to enable management plans that are feasible, and create more common ground for decisionmaking.

But with cultural practices on farming entrenched in Africa societies coupled with inadequate skills and equipment to fight the fires when they occur, the battle of wildfires in Africa could be far from being won.

Forest fire management strategies According to Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the number and severity of forest fires are increasing in Africa and it is becoming more difficult to predict them. With support from the international community, countries are developing mitigation procedures for wildfires, the majority of which are caused by human activities.

But the fundamental question is how to advance and implement strategies that balance the technical aspects of fire suppression with those related to human causes. African countries need to put into practice efficient technologies and management systems for fire detection and suppression. Many others have achieved encouraging results through participatory fire management schemes or schemes that incorporate both aspects.

FAO’s checklist for participatory fire management activities suggests, among others, the supply of necessary firefighting tools to the local fire units and training the local fire units in prescribed burning.

f you count warehouses, storage facilities and distribution centres among your business assets, the installation of high-quality fire protection systems within these spaces is critical. In commercial and industrial properties, sprinklers are the number one means of preventing loss of life and protecting valuable assets and infrastructure. They have been serving this purpose for more than a century, after all.

Structures without these measures in place are unlikely to survive a blaze.

Of course, there are also strict rules and regulations that guide commercial fire safety in South Africa. The South African National Standard 10400 Part T provides detailed requirements for the design and construction of buildings, as well as the fire protection equipment with which they must be fitted. These requirements are designed to protect the people using the building and to offer guidance on preventing the spread and intensity of any fire that might occur.

But installing these systems is a complex process that is both time and labour intensive. In the case of industrial sprinklers, for example, each sprinkler usually has to be doped and taped before it can be installed, and a sprinkler wrench is required to secure it in place. In large commercial sites, this exercise can take days to complete, and the repetitive motion of using a sprinkler wrench can be damaging for both the integrity of the sprinkler and the health of the installer.

nderstanding features and benefits of slurry submersible pumps specific to a dewatering application is paramount. This is because pump features and benefits may differ in pump types as they will often have ideal applications that are best suited to some more than others.

Bearing in mind the harsh conditions in mining environments where they are deployed to perform demanding duties, it is only natural that submersible pumps should have a certain set of standard features suitable for their applications.

Critical factors when choosing submersible slurry pumps Ultimately, with basic knowledge of pump and benefits, one should be able to make an informed choice.

Specifically, a number of essential factors should be considered when selecting the correct submersible slurry pump, whether it is for dewatering, desilting or dam cleaning.

The first point is the quantity of product that needs to be transported. The flow rate or tonnage will determine the size of the pump to start. Then the discharge head, which will determine the power required and the pump hydraulics. Equally critical, is the product characteristics, for instance, clean water, dirty water, light slurry, heavy slurry.

On product characteristics, Gomes indicates that, when pumping clean water with a typical submersible pump, all particles and contaminants must be kept removed.

All sets are controlled by Welling & Crossleys own Smartgen genset controller, monitoring and protecting the engine, alternator and pump simultaneously.

SMARTGEN Control Box Features: • Manual start Mode; Allows a single event push button start/stop.

• Timed run Mode; Allows a single event programmed run time up to 99hrs with auto stop at the end of the event • Auto start Mode; Allows a programmed time start and stop event, daily or weekly, up to 14 programmed events • High pressure pump/pipe protection, by using the pump pressure transducer you can protect your pump and pipework to interrupt any of the run events. Ideal for tank filling on auto start • Time delay contactors delay the supply of AC power to the pump whilst the genset gets up to operating speed, the AC power is also turned off to the pump prior to the engine stopping • Emergency stop button on door of controller

• Single Phase control boxes feature two single phase weatherproof outlets • Three phase control boxes feature one three phase and one single phase outlet • Controller has spare inputs for other uses, e.g. flow switch or float switch
