Un puerto más vivo que nunca

“Una jarra se llena gota a gota”, decía Buda Gautama con la serenidad de quien entiende el valor del tiempo y la constancia. Esa misma verdad la hemos vivido en Puerto Portals a lo largo de estos seis años de intensa dedicación al proyecto de remodelación del puerto. Han sido años de trabajo diario, de compromiso y esfuerzo compartido por todo un equipo que ha volcado su energía en un sueño común: transformar Puerto Portals en un espacio más moderno, funcional y alineado con los valores de sostenibilidad que marcan el rumbo del futuro. Hoy, miramos con orgullo el resultado de ese proceso. Porque cada paso, cada pequeña mejora, cada decisión tomada con cuidado y cariño, nos ha llevado hasta aquí: a un puerto que no solo responde a las necesidades de nuestro tiempo, sino que se anticipa a ellas. Un puerto más vivo, más consciente y más preparado para seguir siendo un referente en el Mediterráneo.

Precisamente, y hablando de sostenibilidad, me gustaría destacar nuestro reciente acuerdo de colaboración con Ocean Ecostructures, en el marco de nuestro movimiento Blue Marina. Gracias a esta alianza, Puerto Portals cuenta ya con un sistema pionero que contribuye activamente a la regeneración de la flora y fauna marina, permitiéndonos además monitorizar los resultados en tiempo real. Una apuesta firme por la innovación al servicio del medioambiente.

También me complace compartir el lanzamiento de un nuevo espacio de diálogo y pensamiento: Puerto Portals Talks. Este nuevo ciclo de charlas arrancó el pasado mes de abril con una inspiradora ponencia invitándonos a reflexionar sobre cómo reconectar con nuestra humanidad en plena era digital. Con esta iniciativa, aspiramos a abrir las puertas a múltiples voces y miradas que nos ayuden a cuestionarnos y a comprender mejor el mundo que compartimos.

Deseo, de corazón, que disfrute de esta nueva edición de la revista, y que disfrute de momentos agradables e inspiradores en Puerto Portals.

Our port has never been more alive

“Drop by drop the water jar is filled,” said Gautama Buddha, with the serenity of someone who understands the value of time and perseverance.

This quote is a great description of what we have experienced over the last six years of intense renovation work at Puerto Portals. These have been years of daily work, commitment and effort, and our team has put all its energy into our common dream: to transform Puerto Portals into a more modern, functional space which aligns with the sustainability values which lead the way into the future. Today we are able to enjoy the fruits of our labour with pride. Every step, every small improvement, each carefully and lovingly made decision, has brought us here: to a port which not only delivers on current needs, but is ahead of its time. Our port is now more vibrant, more conscious and more prepared to continue leading the way in the Mediterranean.

While on the subject of sustainability, I would like to highlight our recent collaboration agreement with Ocean Ecostructures, within the framework of our Blue Marina movement. Thanks to this alliance, Puerto Portals now boasts a pioneering system which actively contributes to the regeneration of marine flora and fauna, as well as allowing us to monitor the results in real time. Another firm step in the right direction, where innovation focuses on serving the environment.

I am also very excited to share the launch of a new project dedicated to dialogue and the exchange of ideas: Puerto Portals Talks. This new series of talks began in April with an inspiring presentation which invited us to reflect on how we can reconnect with our humanity in the midst of the digital era. We hope this initiative will open the doors to multiple voices and points of view which will help us question ourselves and achieve a better understanding of the world we all share.

Gádor Muntaner

Su primer baño en el mar fue en una playa de Mallorca a los 3 años. Aquel día sus padres le pusieron una máscara, unas aletas y un tubo para que observara la vida bajo el agua.

Una experiencia que definiría su camino, pues hoy Gádor Muntaner (Barcelona, 1991) es una respetada científica y experta en la conservación de tiburones, siendo su voz una de las más influyentes en la divulgación de los escualos en el mundo.

Gádor asegura que ya sentía Mallorca cuando estaba en el vientre de su madre. Hasta los 16 años pasó todos sus veranos en la isla, en una casa de su familia al sur de la isla, donde al despertar olía a mar.

De madre catalana y de padre mallorquín, su pasión por el mundo marino lo heredó de su abuelo paterno. “Nunca lo llegué a conocer, pero era un enamorado del mar. Se construyó su propio llaüt con el que iba a pescar. Era su obsesión”, dice.

En cuanto a Gádor, sus dos obsesiones son Mallorca (vive aquí desde hace dos años) y los tiburones. “Siento paz nadando con ellos, no me dan miedo, lo que me daría miedo sería no ver ninguno”, afirma. Esta fijación por los tiburones comenzó durante un viaje a las Maldivas con su madre. Entonces tenía 15 años y fue la primera vez que nadó entre ellos. “Pasé las noches previas al viaje sin dormir del miedo que tenía. Pero el día que me metí con ellos, vi su carita y sus ojitos de animales inocentes. Enseguida me transmitieron tranquilidad e interés. Algo habrán hecho bien si llevan en este planeta más de 400 millones de años”, reflexiona Gádor.

Aquella experiencia marcaría su propósito de vida: aprender de los tiburones. Así que dejó la carrera de Farmacia para estudiar Ciencias del Mar en Gran Canaria para, posteriormente, especializarse en el estudio de los tiburones con la ONG mexicana Pelagios Kakunjá. Mientras cursaba el máster en Manejo de Recursos Marinos, realizó su primera investigación: analizar los pa-

trones de movimientos del tiburón punta plateada en el Archipiélago de Revillagigedo. Con este trabajo consiguió que se protegiera a esta especie y que el archipiélago fuera nombrado Patrimonio Mundial de la Unesco. “Hay un gran desconocimiento sobre los tiburones. Nos los han vendido como monstruos peligrosos, pero en realidad juegan un papel fundamental para mantener el equilibrio marino. Los escualos están en la cima de la cadena trófica y regulan todo lo que está por debajo de ellos. Si no ejercieran de depredadores, no controlarían a la población de sus presas, ya que éstas tienen que estar en un nivel de abundancia concreto. Un tiburón es un indicador de salud de un ecosistema. Un mar con ellos es un mar sano”.

Hace años, el mar Mediterráneo tuvo la mayor biodiversidad del mundo, pero en la actualidad es uno de los más arrasados. Gádor Muntaner recuerda que este mar era un sitio clave para la reproducción de tiburones blancos, y el hábitat de animales como la foca monje. “El mar, si algo tiene, es su capacidad de regeneración, siempre que le dejemos”, asegura. Por eso siente la obligación de hablar de ello. De que la pesca con palangre está matando a los tiburones, y que para protegerlos hay que proteger a su vez las reservas marinas.

Desde hace años, Gádor Muntaner utiliza sus redes sociales para divulgar sobre escualos y conservación marina. Tanto es así que en 2024 entró en la lista Forbes de influencers por sus informaciones sobre los tiburones y sus ecosistemas.

Her first ever swim in the sea was at a beach in Mallorca, when she was 3 years old. That day her parents equipped her with a mask, a snorkel and some flippers so that she could observe life under the water. That experience would define her path in life. Today Gádor Muntaner (Barcelona, 1991) is a respected scientist and expert on shark conservation. Hers is one of the most influential voices when it comes to spreading awareness on the world’s sharks.

Gádor claims that she could already feel Mallora when she was in her mother’s womb. She spent all her summers on the island until she was 16 years old, at her family’s house in the south, where she could smell the sea when she woke up in the mornings. Her mother is Catalan and her father Mallorcan, and she inherited her passion for the marine world from her paternal grandfather. “I never got to meet him, but he loved the sea. He built his own ‘llaüt’ and he would go out fishing in it. He was obsessed,” she says.

As for Gádor, her obsessions are Mallorca (she has been living here for two years now) and sharks. “Swimming with sharks makes me feel at peace, they don’t scare me, what would scare me would be to never see one,” she says. Her fixation with sharks began during a trip to the Maldives with her mother. She was 15 years old and had her first ever swim with them.

“I couldn’t sleep the nights before the trip, I was so scared. But the day I got in with them I saw their faces and the innocence in their eyes. They made me feel calm and curious. They must have done something right if they have been on the planet for over 400 million years,” Gádor reflects.

That experience would define her life’s purpose: to learn from the sharks. She dropped out of a pharmaceutical degree to study Marine Sciences in Gran Canaria and later specialised in the study of sharks with the Mexican non-profit Pelagios Kakunjá.

Whilst studying for a Masters in Marine Resource Management she carried out her first research, analysing sil-

vertip sharks’ movement patterns in the Revillagigedo Archipelago. Thanks to her work the species received protected status and the archipelago was named a Unesco World Heritage Site.

“There is a significant lack of knowledge when it comes to sharks. We have been made to believe that they are dangerous monsters, but they actually have a vital role in maintaining balanced marine environments. Sharks are at the top of the food chain and they regulate everything beneath them. If they didn’t carry out their role as predators they wouldn’t control their prey’s populations, as these need to be at specific abundance levels. A shark is an indicator of how healthy an ecosystem is. A sea with sharks in it is a healthy sea.”

Years ago the Mediterranean sea was the most biodiverse in the world, but it is currently one of the most ravaged. Gádor Muntaner recalls that it was once a key place for the reproduction of great white sharks, and the habitat for animals like monk seals. “If there’s something the sea can do, it’s regenerate itself, as long as we allow it to,” she says.

This is why she feels the obligation to talk about it. So that people know that longline fishing is killing sharks and that if we want to protect them we have to make sure we are protecting marine nature reserves.

For years Gádor Muntaner has been using her social media to spread awareness about sharks and marine conservation. So much so that in 2024 she was featured on the Forbes Best Content Creators list thanks to everything she shares on sharks and their ecosystem.

Enric Adrián Gener

Con su espectacular fotografía de una gaviota posada sobre el caparazón de una tortuga marina, Enric Adrián Gener (Menorca, 1982) ha sido finalista del Ocean Photographer of the Year 2024. Una imagen real que refleja un instante único, capturado por casualidad en aguas de su isla. “Mostrar una fotografía como ésta hace que la gente menos relacionada con el mar pueda crear un vínculo más fuerte con él”, afirma Gener.

“Fue un momento muy mágico que probablemente no se repetirá. La foto está ahí, queda para siempre. Pero a mí lo que más me interesaba en ese momento era vivir la experiencia”.

Aquel día Enric Gener había hecho una de las múltiples inmersiones para fotografiar los fondos marinos en el Mediterráneo. “De pronto observé, a pocos metros de mí, a una gaviota posada sobre algo robusto y oscuro. Cuando me acerqué, para mi asombro descubrí que era una tortuga marina. Al principio pensé que estaba muerta, pero luego abrió los ojos y me miró, estaba viva y en perfecto estado”, rememora. “Fue un momento muy mágico que probablemente no se repetirá nunca más. La foto está ahí, queda para siempre, pero a mí lo que más me interesaba en ese momento era vivir la experiencia”, explica.

“Mi pareja fue la primera persona de la embarcación en percatarse del momento decisivo. Al principio no entendíamos qué estábamos viendo. Una gaviota, sí, como tantas otras veces. Pero en esta ocasión había algo raro, la gaviota estaba posada sobre algo en medio del mar. Hasta que nos acercamos y descubrimos a la tortuga”, recuerda Enric.

Estuvieron cerca de 10 minutos contemplando aquella escena tan única. Con mucha cautela, Enric empezó a pulsar el obturador de su cámara sin parar, mientras el barco iba acercándose. “Pronto estuvimos lo suficiente cerca para que me pudiera tirar al agua e ir nadando hacia la gaviota y la tortuga con la cámara subacuática. Cuando ya estaba muy cerca, la gaviota voló y ambas se separaron. Pero la tortuga no huyó, se quedó a cinco metros de profundidad, tranquila y saliendo a respirar de vez en cuando. Luego nadé junto a ella unos 20 minutos. Una experiencia que no olvidaré en la vida”.

La fotografía de la gaviota y la tortuga fue finalista en los premios Ocean Photographer of the Year 2024, en la categoría Fine Art. Pero más allá de la fotografía y los reconocimientos, para Enric el mar es lo más parecido a un hogar. En especial el mar Mediterráneo, al que consagra su vida a través de imágenes tan especiales como esta.

Enric Adrián Gener (Menorca, 1982) was one of the finalists for Ocean Photographer of the Year 2024 thanks to his spectacular photograph of a seagull standing on a sea turtle’s shell. The real image which reflects a unique moment in time, was captured by coincidence in his island’s waters. “A photo like this one encourages people who do not have a close relationship with the sea to create a stronger connection with it,” says Gener.

On the day the photo was taken, Enric Gener had taken multiple dives to photograph the sea bed. “Suddenly I saw a seagull standing on something robust and dark, just a few metres away. When I got closer I was surprised to see that it was a sea turtle. At first I thought it was dead, but then it opened its eyes and looked at me, it was alive and well,” he recalls. “It was a very magical moment which I will probably never come across again. I have the photo, I always will, but in that moment I just wanted to savour the experience,” he explains.

“My partner was the first person on the boat to notice it. To begin with we couldn’t figure out what we were seeing. A seagull, yes, like so many other times. But this time there was something strange, the seagull was standing on something in the middle of the sea. We had to get much closer to see that it was, in fact, a sea turtle”, Enric recalls.

They spent close to 10 minutes gazing at the unique scene. Enric began pressing the shutter on his camera, non-stop, but very carefully, as the boat got closer and closer. “Soon we were close enough for me to get into the water and swim towards the seagull and turtle with my underwater camera. When I got very close, the seagull flew off and the two parted ways. But the turtle didn’t swim off, it stayed calmly at a depth of five metres, coming up to breathe every now and then. I swam with it for about 20 minutes. It was an experience I will never forget.”

The photo of the seagull and the turtle was selected as one of the finalists in the Ocean Photographer of the Year 2024 competition, in the Fine Art category. The sea isn’t just the inspiration for his photography, it is also where Enric feels most at home. Especially the Mediterranean sea, to which he dedicates his life through truly extraordinary images such as this one.

Cuando el viajero francés Gaston Vueillier llegó al puerto de Palma a bordo de un barco a vapor en 1893, sus ojos centellaban con todo lo que veían a su alrededor: “Dentro del puerto los muelles ofrecen una animación extraordinaria, los habitantes de la ciudad han venido a ver llegar el vapor, ya que es una de sus grandes distracciones. Unas barcas rodean nuestro barco. Ligeras galeras se precipitan al galope de las mulas o los caballos. Toda esta gente hormiguea a plena luz del día, bajo un cielo azul, ante el maravilloso decorado de la ciudad encendida al sol”, dejó escrito.

Aún faltaba un cuarto de siglo para el aterrizaje del primer avión comercial en el aeródromo de Son Bonet, en 1920, que trajo correspondencia y periódicos de Barcelona, y que de regreso se llevó dos ensaimadas que llegaron “casi calientes”, según cuentan los periódicos de la época. Hasta entonces el puerto de Palma había sido un constante trajinar de mercancías, pasajeros, carruajes, paseantes, estibadores y curiosos que se entretenían observando las operaciones de los imponentes barcos de vapor, que sustituían definitivamente a los tradicionales veleros. En 1891, la fusión de dos antiguas navieras había dado como resultado la compañía La Isleña Marítima, conce-

sionaria de las comunicaciones por mar entre Palma y las otras islas, así como con Barcelona, Valencia, Argel y Marsella. Sus elegantes barcos, construidos en Génova, llegaron a ser conocidos como “los cisnes del Mediterráneo”.

El puerto de Palma era entonces fundamental para la floreciente economía mallorquina, muy apoyada en las exportaciones de calzado, tejidos y productos agrícolas. Entre 1900 y 1920, tanto las exportaciones como el tráfico naviero del puerto de Palma se duplicaron. Tal era el volumen de mercancías que recibía el puerto, que desde 1877 existía una línea de tren que unía el puerto con la Plaza España. En 1931 se excavó incluso un túnel hasta el actual Parc de la Mar, para evitar las complicaciones que causaba el recorrido del tren por La Rambla y el Paseo del Borne.

Un siglo después, ya nadie acude al puerto de Palma a ver llegar el vapor, como en la época de Gaston Vueillier. Los hábitos de la sociedad han cambiado y hay, sin duda, muchas más formas de entretenimiento… Sin embargo, vale la pena recordar cómo fue una vez la historia de nuestra isla, cuando solo nos comunicaba el mar.

“Palma port was a fundamental part of Mallorca’s flourishing economy which depended heavily on the export of shoes, textiles and farming products”.

Before the arrival of the first plane on Mallorca, the only way to reach the island was by boat, and its ports were a constant hub of activity, full of travellers, workers and curious onlookers.

When the French traveller Gaston Vueillier arrived at Palma port on board a steamboat in 1893 he was overwhelmed by what he saw: “Within the port the docks are extraordinarily vibrant, the city’s inhabitants have come to see the steamer arrive, as it is one of their biggest distractions. Our ship is soon surrounded by boats. Light carriages arrive pulled by galloping horses or mules. All these people are milling about in the sunshine, under the blue sky, with the wonderful city lit up by the sun in the background,” he wrote.

This was a quarter of a century before the first commercial aircraft landed at the Son Bonet aerodrome in 1920. The plane brought mail and newspapers from Barcelona and left the island with two ensaimadas which arrived “almost hot,” according to the newspapers of the time. Until then Palma port had been a constant hive of shipments, passengers, carriages, walkers, dockworkers and curious onlookers who would entertain themselves watching the operations of the imposing steam ships which had replaced the traditional sailboats for good.

In 1891 the fusion of two old shipping companies resulted in the creation of La Isleña Marítima, the con-

cessionary of communications by sea between Palma and the other islands, as well as with Barcelona, Valencia, Algeria and Marseille. Its elegant ships, built in Genova, came to be known as “the swans of the Mediterranean.”

Palma port was a fundamental part of Mallorca’s flourishing economy which depended heavily on the export of shoes, textiles and farming products. The volume of exports and shipping traffic doubled between 1900 and 1920. The amount of goods received was such that from 1877 onwards a train line connected the port with Plaza España. In 1931, an underground tunnel was built from the port to what is now the Parc de la Mar, to avoid complications caused by the train running through La Rambla and the Paseo del Borne.

A century later, no one rushes to Palma’s port to see the steamer arrive, as they did during Gaston Vueillier’s era. Society’s habits have changed and there are definitely more options when it comes to entertainment now… But it is worth remembering what our island was once like, back when the sea was our only connection to the rest of the world.

Céline Cousteau (Los Ángeles, 1972) creció en una familia comprometida con los mares y los océanos. De hecho, es la continuadora del legado que inició su abuelo, el reconocido comandante y explorador francés Jacques Cousteau (1910 -1997).

Hoy Céline documenta a través de las cámaras los rincones más recónditos del planeta, mostrándonos a sus gentes y su genuina conexión con la naturaleza.

Los recuerdos más especiales de la infancia de Céline están directamente relacionados con su abuela Simone Melchior, la mujer que conquistó el corazón de Jacques Cousteau, su abuelo, el famoso oceanógrafo que surcó los mares del mundo a bordo de su mítico barco Calypso, en busca de historias que llegaron a las pantallas y a los corazones de toda una generación.

“Cuando iba a visitar a mis abuelos a su casa en Mónaco, mi abuela me daba unos francos para que fuera a comprarme un helado y que hiciera mis propias expediciones. Cuando regresaba, me pedía que le contara historias sobre lo que había visto. Era una forma sencilla de inspirar a una niña y de hacerle ver que la vida es toda una aventura”, recuerda Céline. Según ella, su abuela era “la verdadera capitana” de la embarcación. Hija de un almirante, Simone quiso enrolarse en la Marina francesa, “pero en aquella época las mujeres no podían hacerlo”. Así y todo, fue pionera en la exploración submarina en su país y en el mundo.

La primera vez que Céline Cousteau realizó una expedición con el Calypso todavía era una niña. En aquella ocasión acompañó a su padre, Jean-Michel Cousteau, durante dos semanas recorriendo el Amazonas. Aquella experiencia la marcó al descubrir cómo los seres humanos se conectaban con la naturaleza.

Desde entonces, en la línea del escritor Julio Verne, quien decía que “cada cual vive el mundo que es capaz de imaginar”, Céline ha imaginado y vivido el suyo propio siempre ligado al compromiso con la defensa del medioambiente y las culturas del mundo.

Aunque estudió Psicología en la Skidmore College, en Virginia, EE.UU., Céline pronto entendió que su camino era seguir los pasos de los Cousteau. Así que se inició en la producción audiovisual junto a su padre. Su primer documental se llamó Ocean Adventures, y trataba sobre la migración de aves desde México hacia Alaska. Desde entonces han pasado más de 20 años, en los que Céline ha trabajado en 18 documentales como directora y productora. Entre ellos, uno que recuerda especialmente fue el realizado en 2007 en Brasil con los indígenas del Valle Yavarí. La serie se tituló Tribes on the Edge. “Pasé siete años realizando ese documental. Porque a mí lo que me interesa no es vender lo que veo, sino contarlo. Me resulta fascinante entender cómo se relaciona la gente con su entorno natural”, explica.

Al igual que su abuelo Jacques Cousteau, Céline también opina que el Mediterráneo “está enfermo y en constante peligro. Estamos sobrepescando y utilizando redes de arrastre. La polución en el mar nos afecta más de lo que creemos. Los microplásticos que ingieren los peces que nos comemos tienen un impacto negativo en nuestras arterias. Si queremos tener una buena salud, debemos cuidar el medio ambiente. No hay otra manera”.

La pregunta que se hace, y que nos hace, es la que fundamenta todo su trabajo: “¿Qué puedo hacer yo por el mundo? La naturaleza no necesita del hombre. Nosotros podemos desaparecer como especie, y la naturaleza seguirá su curso”.

Por eso anima a todo el mundo a que se implique en el cuidado de los mares y océanos, fundamentales para nuestra existencia.

Céline Cousteau (Los Angeles, 1972) was brought up in a family which was deeply committed to the seas and oceans. In fact, she is continuing the legacy which was started by her grandfather, the well-known French commander and explorer Jacques Cousteau (1910 -1997). Today Céline documents the most hidden places on the planet through her cameras, showing us the people who live there and their genuine connection with nature.

Céline’s most beloved childhood memories are directly related to her grandmother, Simone Melchior, the woman who captured her grandfather’s heart. Her grandfather was Jacques Cousteau, the famous oceanographer who sailed the seas on board his mythical boat Calypso, in search of stories which reached the screens and hearts of an entire generation.

“Whenever I visited my grandparents at their house in Monaco, my grandmother would give me a few francs so I could go and buy myself an ice cream and have my own expeditions. When I came back, she would ask me to tell her stories about what I had seen. It was a simple way to inspire a girl and to make her see that life is one big adventure,’’ Céline recalls.

She says that her grandmother was “the real captain of the ship”. The daughter of an admiral, Simone wanted to join the French Navy, “but in those days, women couldn’t.” That did not stop her from becoming a pioneer in underwater exploration in her country and across the world.

The first time Céline Cousteau set out on an expedition on the Calypso she was still a little girl. She went with her father, Jean-Michel Cousteau, and they spent two weeks exploring the Amazon. The experience had a real impact on her and she discovered that human beings could have a very powerful connection with nature. Since then, in line with the writer Jules Verne who said that “everyone experiences the world they are able to imagine,” Céline has imagined and lived a life which is always related to protecting the environment and cultures of the world.

Even though she studied Psychology at Skidmore College in Virginia, USA, Céline soon understood that her path was to follow in the Cousteau footsteps. So she began working in film production with her father. Her first documentary was Ocean Adventures, and it was about the migration of birds from Mexico to Alaska. Over 20 years have passed since then and Céline has worked on 18 documentaries as director and producer. One of the productions she is especially proud of was produced in 2007 in Brazil, with the indigenous people of the Yavarí valley. The series was called Tribes on the Edge. “I spent seven years making that documentary. I’m interested in telling the stories of what I see, not selling them. I think it’s fascinating to understand people’s relationship with their natural surroundings,” she explains.

Just like her grandfather, Jacques Cousteau, Céline thinks that the Mediterranean “is ill and in constant danger. We are overfishing and using trawling fishing nets. Pollution in the sea affects us much more than we think. The micro plastics which are contained in the fish we eat have a negative impact on our arteries. If we want to be healthy, we need to take care of the environment. There is no other way.”

The question she asks herself, and which she asks us, is at the core of all of her work. “What can I do for the world? Nature does not need human beings. We could disappear as a species and nature would carry on regardless.”

This is why she encourages everyone to get involved in the protection of the seas and oceans, as they are fundamental for our existence.

Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 – Palma, 1983) fue un enamorado de Mallorca. Tanto, que decidió vivir los últimos 30 años de su vida en la isla. A día de hoy es posible visitar su taller, en el mismo estado en que lo dejó tras su muerte hace 42 años.

La relación de Joan Miró y Mallorca viene de lejos. A principios del siglo XX, de niño, Miró ya pasaba los veranos de su infancia y adolescencia en la isla. Concretamente en Sóller, de donde era la familia de su madre, Dolors Ferrà i Oromí (el abuelo de Miró era el ebanista del pueblo).

Pero el hecho de que decidiera vivir los últimos 30 años de su vida en la isla se debe sobre todo al hecho de que su esposa, Pilar Juncosa, fuera palmesana. Joan Miró y Pilar se casaron en 1929, en la Iglesia de San Nicolás de Palma. Dos años después nació su única hija, Dolors Miró. La familia vivió entre Barcelona y París hasta 1954, año en que se instalaron definitivamente en Mallorca.

El arquitecto Josep Lluís Sert, amigo de Miró, le diseñó la casa con la que siempre había soñado, rodeada de árboles y vegetación, bajo el cielo y las estrellas que tanto inspiraron su obra. En honor a su amigo, Miró llamó a su estudio Taller Sert. “Yo trabajo como un jardinero”, diría años más tarde Miró, refiriéndose a toda la naturaleza que le rodeaba en su nuevo hogar, pero también al cultivo de la atención y la dedicación a la hora de abordar sus proyectos.

Pocos años antes de su muerte, Miró donó sus talleres a la ciudad de Palma, para crear la Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró en Mallorca, un centro donde se preservan cerca de 6.000 obras del artista, entre pinturas, dibujos, esculturas y otros objetos. Los dos talleres de Miró en la isla, el Taller Sert i Son Boter, pueden visitarse tal y como los dejó el artista.

Un artista universal. Desde muy joven, Joan Miró se relacionó con los artistas vanguardistas de Barcelona. Tenía claro que quería llegar a lo más alto, por eso en los años 20 viajó a París por primera vez, donde conoció a Pablo Picasso y André Breton, entre otras figuras influyentes del cubismo y el expresionismo.

A finales de aquella década, Miró ya era reconocido internacionalmente. La crisis económica mundial de los años 30, la Guerra Civil Española y la ruptura del pintor con la etapa surrealista modificarían su mirada sobre la pintura y el mundo, forzado, en muchas ocasiones, a trasladarse de una ciudad a otra. En aquella etapa, Miró renunciaría por un tiempo a la pintura y lo demostraría con la fase a la que llamó “asesinato de la pintura”. Un periodo que marcó el antes y el después de su arte, en el que comenzó a experimentar con otras técnicas, como el collage, los dibujos sobre papeles o la cerámica.

Miró siempre fue un artista comprometido y crítico con las injusticias, y ello le llevó a experimentar constantemente en busca de nuevos lenguajes con los que expresarse. La serie de pinturas Constelaciones, que inició en Normandía, Francia, en 1936 y terminó en Mallorca, es uno de los legados más preciados de su inmensa colección.

El universo simbólico del artista, recogido en una selección de obras realizadas en Mallorca, puede hoy contemplarse en la exposición Miró, 1983, en la Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró.

Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 – Palma, 1983) loved Mallorca. So much so that he decided to spend the last 30 years of his life on the island. You can visit his studio, which has been kept just as he left it when he died 42 years ago.

Joan Miró’s relationship with Mallorca was a long-standing one. At the beginning of the 20th Century, Miró would spend his summers here as a child and teen. He would stay in Sóller, where his mother, Dolors Ferrà i Oromí, was from (Miró’s grandfather was the village cabinetmaker.)

His decision to spend the last 30 years of his life on the island was mainly due to the fact that his wife, Pilar Juncosa, was from Palma. Joan Miró and Pilar married in 1929 at the Church of San Nicolás in the city. Their daughter, Dolors Miró, was born two years later. The family split their time between Barcelona and Paris until 1954 when they decided to move to Mallorca.

The architect Josep Lluís Sert, a friend of Miró’s, designed the house he had always dreamed of, surrounded by trees and greenery, under the sky and stars that had such an influence on his work. In honour of his friend, Miró called his studio Taller Sert. “I work like a gardener,” Miró said years later, referring to all the nature that surrounded his new home, but also to how he would cultivate his attention and dedication when it came to working on his projects.

A few years before his death, Miró donated his studios to the city of Palma, to create the Pilar i Joan Miró Foundation, a centre where over 6000 of his pieces are kept; from paintings, drawings, sculptures and other objects. Miró’s two studios on the island, Taller Sert and Son Boter, are open to visitors and have been preserved just as the artist left them.

A universal artist. From a very young age, Joan Miró interacted with Barcelona’s avant-garde artists. He had strong ambitions to become a highly successful artist so he travelled to Paris in the 20s where he met Pablo Picasso and André Breton, amongst other influential cubist and expressionist artists.

By the end of that decade Miró had already become internationally acclaimed. The global economic crisis of the 30s, the Spanish Civil War and his break with the surrealist movement changed the way he approached painting and the world. He was forced to move from city to city on many occasions. Miró gave up on painting for some time and this resulted in the phase he called “the murder of painting.” This would mark a before and after in his art and he began experimenting with other techniques, such as collage, sketches on paper or ceramics.

As an artist Miró was always engaged with society and critical of injustice. He was always experimenting in search of new languages with which to express himself. The series of paintings Constellations, which he began in Normandy, France in 1936 and finished in Mallorca, is one of the most valued legacies of his immense collection.

The artist’s symbolic universe, collected in a selection of works created in Mallorca, can today be admired at the Miró, 1983, exhibition at the Pilar i Joan Miró Foundation.

Nueva arquitectura mallorquina

Durante la última década, una nueva generación de arquitectos de la isla ha redefinido el diseño y los parámetros de esta profesión.

Estudios y profesionales independientes que abrieron sus puertas en plena crisis económica, y que por esta razón entendieron que era el momento de cambiar las cosas. La sostenibilidad y los desafíos tecnológicos marcan su camino, a la vez que tratan de preservar las tradiciones mallorquinas por todos los medios.

Uno de los casos más claros es el estudio Munarq, que abrió en 2014 con la idea de hacer algo especial en Mallorca. El wabi-sabi, o la “belleza de la imperfección”, define cada uno de sus trabajos. La tierra, el paisaje y la conservación son los ejes principales de su arquitectura. Una arquitectura sencilla, natural y sostenible que encuentra su cima en Ca na Pau, una preciosa casa en medio del campo mallorquín que recuerda a las de hace siglos, construida con la olvidada técnica del balasto.

Todos los proyectos de Marta Colón de Carvajal y Juan Palencia parten desde un enfoque contextual a partir del lugar y la cultura. Por eso su estudio no podía llamarse de otra manera que Isla. Sus trabajos destacan por la artesanía, combinada con un gusto contemporáneo excepcional, como se aprecia en el proyecto Casa Garrigue, una finca mallorquina en Algaida, o en Casa Mila, una casa renovada donde la luz, la simplicidad y la calma se apoderan del ambiente. Para ellos, la nueva arquitectura debe mirar al futuro, conservando la esencia del pasado y cumpliendo con las necesidades del presente.

En qué dirección va la arquitectura es lo que se preguntaron los arquitectos del estudio Ted’A, Irene Pérez y Jaume Mayol. Y la respuesta que obtuvieron fue que iba hacia la transformación de los edificios sin olvidar las costumbres, la herencia y las necesidades de cada lugar.

Por eso la mayoría de sus proyectos se adapta a la topografía del terreno en cuestión. Jugando con los espacios abiertos, que permiten apreciar tanto los muros como la materia prima del interior.

Generar ideas diversas, miradas complejas y novedosas. Con esta premisa un grupo de jóvenes arquitectos crearon en 2015 el estudio Nora. Sin ataduras de ningún tipo y en continuo movimiento, sus proyectos son sensibles con el entorno, buscando siempre la manera de innovar ante cualquier circunstancia.

En el caso de la arquitecta Mariana de Delás, su dedicación y gusto por el diseño la han llevado a arreglárselas muy bien para crear con todo lo que tiene a mano, sin grandes pretensiones, más bien todo lo contrario. Sus enfoques son idealistas, divertidos y artísticos, como el pequeño refugio de 15 m2 que reformó en mitad del campo mallorquín, un icono que destaca por su ventana de arco rojo brillante.

La expresión de lo local, de lo doméstico, es un tema recurrente entre la nueva generación de arquitectos mallorquines. Esa sensación de hogar, donde cada espacio está conectado dentro de la propia casa. Algo muy perceptible en los proyectos de BUC Arquitectura, formado por un grupo de jóvenes arquitectos que han cambiado los paradigmas de la profesión, dando protagonismo a lo autóctono, a la luz y al cielo de Mallorca.

Over the past decade, a new generation of architects on the island has redefined the design and parametres of the profession. These are studios and independent professionals who set up shop in the midst of a financial crisis and so understood that it was time to change things. Sustainability and technological challenges are, of course, key, but they all also strive to preserve Mallorcan traditions by all means possible.

One of the clearest cases of this is Munarq studio which opened in 2014 with the idea of doing something special in Mallorca. Wabi-sabi, or “the beauty of imperfection,” defines each of their projects. The land, scenery and conservation are at the centre of their work. Theirs is a simple, natural and sustainable architecture which has been perfectly expressed at Ca na Pau, a beautiful house in the middle of the Mallorcan countryside. The house reminds us of the houses of centuries ago and was built using the now forgotten balasto technique.

All Marta Colón de Carvajal and Juan Palencia’s projects focus on place and culture. So naturally their studio could not be called anything other than Isla (island in Spanish). Their work stands out for its craftsmanship combined with exceptional contemporary taste as can be seen in the Casa Garrigue project, a Mallorcan estate in Algaida, or at Casa Mila, a renovated house where they have created an environment full of light, simplicity and calm. For these architects, new architecture must look to the future, conserving the essence of the past and delivering on present-day needs.

Where is architecture headed? This is the question the architects at Ted’A studio, Irene Pérez and Jaume Mayol, asked themselves. And the answer they came to is towards the transformation of buildings without forgetting traditions, heritage and the needs of each space.

That’s why most of their projects adapt to the topography of the land in question. They play with open spaces, which allows us to appreciate the walls as well as the raw materials used.

To generate diverse ideas, complex and novel ways of looking at the world. This is the premise of the group of young architects who created studio Nora in 2015. Without being tied down to anything and in constant movement, their projects are sensitive to their surroundings and always looking for ways to innovate.

As for the architect Marina de Delás, her dedication and taste for design make her very successful at using everything she already has at hand in her creationsnothing is ostentatious, in fact it’s the complete opposite. She focuses on the idealistic, fun and artistic, her 15m2 refuge is a great example. Delás renovated the tiny house in the middle of the Mallorcan countryside, an icon which stands out due to its bright red bow window.

BUC is a studio made up of a group of young architects who have changed the profession’s paradigms, choosing to shine the spotlight on the autochthonous, the light and sky of Mallorca.

Finca Biniagual

Desde hace siglos Finca Biniagual guarda un valor que la hace única: la elaboración de sus vinos trabajando el policultivo y la agricultura circular tan tradicional pero hoy en día únicos en Mallorca.

“La conciencia de que un gran vino se hace desde el campo y no en la bodega es primordial si queremos obtener una calidad única en la fruta”.

.Hay escritos de 1750 en los que ya se hace referencia a la calidad de los vinos producidos en esta zona agrícola”, destaca Matthieu Pichenot, enólogo y gerente de Finca Biniagual. En algunos momentos de la historia, la actividad vinícola desapareció debido a la plaga de la filoxera, lo que convirtió a este pueblo del centro de la isla en un lugar abandonado desde mediados del siglo XX. Esto cambió en los años sesenta, momento en el que la familia Graf adquirió la finca con el objetivo de devolver la vida a estas tierras.

Biniagual conserva un modelo de policultivo único en la isla, que incluye olivos, algarrobos, almendros, cítricos, cereales y miel, si bien el vino es su principal seña de identidad.

La finca cuenta con 170 hectáreas, de las cuales 34 se destinan a la viña. Uno de los trabajos más importantes de los últimos años ha sido la preservación de las variedades de uvas locales. “En Mallorca tenemos variedades con las que se pueden producir vinos muy auténticos, con una identidad propia”, afirma Pichenot, destacando las variedades mantonegro, prensal, giró ros o malvasía.

Una etiqueta local y un sabor que recuerde a Mallorca. Esta es la filosofía de Biniagual a la hora de elaborar sus vinos de alta calidad. Productos auténticos que representan la excepcionalidad del patrimonio de esta finca.

“El 100% de la superficie de Biniagual está certificada como agricultura ecológica. No usamos pesticidas y el abono es totalmente orgánico”, destaca el enólogo.

De hecho, hace tres años que Finca Biniagual inició una serie de proyectos sostenibles relacionados con la producción del vino. El objetivo fue dar un enfoque muy especial en cuanto a elegancia, equilibrio y frescura. Así fue como empezaron con ensayos de biocontrol, incrementando la biodiversidad de la finca para lograr una competencia entre los insectos y, así, evitar las plagas.

“La conciencia de que un gran vino se hace desde el campo y no en la bodega es primordial si queremos obtener una calidad única en la fruta. Por eso, para nosotros, es fundamental tratar la tierra. La tierra lo es todo”, afirma Pichenot.

La vinoteca Biniagual, una de las joyas de esta empresa agrícola familiar, ofrece venta directa de sus vinos, visitas guiadas y catas personalizadas. Experiencias que se pueden disfrutar durante todo el año y que suponen una forma ideal para conocer los orígenes de esta zona vinícola de Mallorca, la agricultura sostenible y el respeto y la pasión por el medio ambiente. Además, en los últimos años, la finca ha adaptado los espacios y renovado sus jardines para la celebración de eventos como bodas o incentivos de empresas.

For centuries, Finca Biniagual has preserved a unique value: crafting its wines through polyculture and circular agriculture, practices that are traditional, yet today unique in Mallorca.

There are written references which date back to 1750 which mention the quality of the wines produced in this area,” says Matthieu Pichenot, oenologist and manager of Finca Biniagual. However, due to the phylloxera plague, wine production stopped completely at some points in history, and this hamlet in the centre of the island was abandoned from the middle of the 20th Century. That changed in the sixties when the Graf family purchased the estate with the aim of bringing its land back to life.

Biniagual practises a type of polyculture which is unique on the island. Olives, carobs, almonds, citrus, cereal and honey are all produced simultaneously, although grapes cultivated for wine are the estate’s signature crop.

The estate covers 170 hectares, 34 of which are used for growing grapevines. One of its most significant tasks over recent years has been the preservation of local grape varieties. “We have varieties in Mallorca which can produce some very authentic wine, with its own unique character,” Pichenot explains, listing the Mantonegro, Prensal, Giró Ros or Malvasia varieties.

A local label and a flavour which is reminiscent of Mallorca. This is Biniagual’s philosophy when it comes to creating its high quality wines. Authentic products which represent the exceptional nature of this estate’s

heritage. “100% of Biniagual’s surface is certified as organic farming. We don’t use pesticides and our fertiliser is completely organic,” the oenologist notes.

In fact, three years ago Finca Biniagual initiated a series of sustainable projects related to wine production. The aim was to achieve a very special perspective related to elegance, balance and freshness. That’s how they began their biocontrol trials, increasing biodiversity on the estate to encourage competition among the insects and so avoid plagues. “If we want to achieve fruit of a unique quality it is essential to remember that a great wine is made on the fields and not in the winery. That’s why taking care of the land is fundamental to everything we do. The land is everything.” Pichenot reiterates.

At the Biniagual wine boutique, one of this family business’ treasures, you can purchase their wines directly, as well as enjoy guided tours and personalised wine tastings. These experiences are available throughout the year and are an ideal way to discover the history of this wine-producing region of Mallorca, as well as to find out more about sustainable agriculture and the company’s respect and passion for the environment. Over recent years, the estate has also adapted some of its spaces and renovated its gardens and these can now be used for events such as weddings and company incentives.

The Serra de Tramuntana, an Unesco World Heritage Site, is home to some of Mallorca’s most spectacular natural beauty and unique views.

Deià – Sóller (17 km.)

Es uno de los caminos más bonitos de la ruta. El trayecto se inicia en el refugio de Can Boi, en el pueblo de Deià. Por su paso dejamos a los lados olivares y bancales construidos por margers y agricultores a lo largo de los siglos. Llegaremos a las casas de Son Bujosa, una magnífica possessió con vistas a la montaña y al mar. El camino circula por diversas fincas mallorquinas con encanto hasta llegar al Far des Cap Gros. Desde esta cima se observa una panorámica de la bahía del Port de Sóller. A los 30 minutos llegaremos al pueblo de Sóller, donde pondremos fin a la etapa.

This is one of the GR-221’s most beautiful hikes. It begins at the Can Boi mountain refuge, in the village of Deià and passes by olive groves and mountain terraces built by margers (dry stone wall builders) and farmers over the centuries. On the way you come to the houses at Son Bujosa, a magnificent possessió (Mallorcan farming estate) with views of the mountains and sea. The trail then takes you through various charming Mallorcan country estates until you reach the lighthouse Far des Cap Gros. From here you get to enjoy a panoramic view of the bay of Sóller port. The village of Sóller, where this hike comes to an end, is just 30 minutes away.

Port de Sóller – Tossals Verds

(19 km.)

El inicio de este camino comienza entre cientos de naranjos, que nos dirigen hacia el barranco de Biniaraix. En este punto, los caminos y bancales son numerosos y cautivadores, sobre todo al llegar al Coll de l’Ofre. Los puntos de Almallutx y Cúber nos ubican en el punto más alto de esta ruta. La etapa termina en el refugio de Tossals Verds, un emblema del senderismo en la isla.

This hike begins amongst hundreds of orange trees which lead you towards the Biniaraix ravine. It features many captivating paths and stone terraces, especially once you reach the Coll de l’Ofre mountain pass. The highest points on this walk are Almallutx and Cúber and this stage of the route ends at the Tossals Verds mountain refuge, one of the most emblematic places to stay on the trail.

Port d’Andratx – La Trapa

(13 km.)

Es la primera de las etapas de la ruta Pedra en Sec GR-221. El tramo circula entre el Port d’Andratx y el Coll de Sa Gramola hasta Sant Elm, y finaliza en la finca de La Trapa. La ruta ha sido inaugurada este año con mejoras en el camino. Los puntos más importantes de esta etapa son las vistas a Sa Dragonera y Ses Fontanelles, el único alojamiento que hay en este camino.

The first of the stages which make up the Pedra en Sec GR-221 trail. This section follows the path between Port d’Andratx and the Coll de Sa Gramola mountain pass up to Sant Elm, and finishes at the La Trapa estate. Some parts of this route have been improved just this year. Highlights include the views of Sa Dragonera and Ses Fontanelles, the only accommodation available on this part of the route.

Estellencs – Esporles (15 km.)

Con espléndidas vistas al mar y las montañas, los bancales de Estellencs y Banyalbufar son las joyas de esta etapa que conecta esta costa marítima con el pueblo de Esporles. Encontramos caminos arraigados a los orígenes musulmanes y fincas históricas, como la de Planícia o la Finca de Es Rafal. El Torrent de Sant Pere separa antiguos caminos reales que bordean estas fincas con el Moletó de sa Granja. Este punto nos indicará que estamos a punto de llegar a Esporles.

With its spectacular views of the sea and mountains, the mountain terraces of Estellencs and Banyalbufar are the highlight of this stage of the route which connects the coastline with the village of Esporles. You come across some very old paths which have Arab origins and historical country estates such as Planicia or Finca de Es Rafal. The Sant Pere ravine separates old royal paths which skirt around these estates with the Moletó de sa Granja. This point signals that you are about to arrive in Esporles.

Pont Romà – Port de Pollença (18 km.)

Se trata del último tramo de la ruta de Pedra en Sec y uno de los más costeros. La etapa comienza en el histórico Pont Romà, construido en la época medieval. Tras varios kilómetros, llegaremos al Camí de Cala Bóquer, que conduce a las preciosas calas del mismo nombre. El camino circula entre vegetación y bosques de pinos. En este punto, encontraremos unas tuberías que nos guiarán hasta la península de Formentor. El mirador del Coll de la Creueta es un punto clave para parar y contemplar las vistas antes de llegar al Port de Pollença, donde termina la etapa.

This is the last stage of the Pedre en Sec route and one of the most coastal. The hike starts at the historical Pont Romà bridge which was constructed in Medieval times. Several kilometres later you arrive at Camí de Cala Bóquer which takes you to beautiful coves of the same name. The route winds through greenery and pine forests. You will come across some pipes which guide you to the Formentor peninsula. The Coll de la Creueta viewpoint is a key point to stop at and enjoy the views before arriving at Pollença port where the hike ends.

Navegar es una de las sensaciones más puras que existen. El placer de sentir el viento al deslizarse sobre las olas es algo único. Una experiencia que ofrecen los cursos y actividades de la Escuela de Vela de Puerto Portals para niños y adultos durante todo el año.

Alo largo de todo el año, la Escuela de Vela de Puerto Portals ofrece cursos para niños y adultos en distintas disciplinas, como vela, kayak y pádel surf. Pero este año, la escuela va un paso más allá con una programación aún más variada y completa, diseñada para que la experiencia de navegar sea más enriquecedora y divertida que nunca.

El atardecer de la luna llena. El 11 de junio, el 10 de julio, el 9 de agosto y el 7 de septiembre son fechas marcadas para no perderse las excursiones que, coincidiendo con la luna llena, realiza la Escuela de Vela Puerto Portals para disfrutar de atardeceres inolvidables. La aventura comienza antes del anochecer. En kayak o pádel surf, los participantes navegan desde la escuela hasta el pequeño islote que se encuentra justo enfrente. Allí, en plena naturaleza y en buena compañía, disfrutarán de un espectáculo único: el sol poniéndose por un lado y, al mismo tiempo, la luna llena emergiendo en el horizonte. Una experiencia difícil de olvidar.

Un cumpleaños en el mar. La Escuela de Vela también es el escenario perfecto para celebrar ocasiones especiales. Ofrece la posibilidad de organizar fiestas de cumpleaños únicas, con actividades como búsquedas del tesoro pensadas para los más pequeños y el alquiler de kayaks o piraguas para disfrutar del mar en grupo. Además, impulsa jornadas en familia donde grandes y pequeños pueden compartir experiencias náuticas adaptadas a todos los niveles, fo-

mentando el deporte, la convivencia y la conexión con el entorno marino.

Yoga en pádel surf. Como parte de su apuesta por la innovación y el bienestar, la Escuela de Vela incorpora nuevas actividades a lo largo del año. Una de las más destacadas son las clases de yoga, pilates y fitness sobre tablas de pádel surf. Una propuesta diferente que combina ejercicio físico y conexión con la naturaleza, en un entorno tan inspirador como el mar. Las sesiones, dirigidas por profesionales, están diseñadas para trabajar el equilibrio, la fuerza y la concentración de forma personalizada, convirtiendo cada clase en una experiencia única sobre el agua.

Compromiso medioambiental. Conscientes del impacto del cambio climático, la contaminación y la pérdida de biodiversidad marina, desde hace años el movimiento Blue Marina impulsa talleres formativos destinados a sensibilizar tanto a jóvenes como a adultos sobre la importancia de cuidar el entorno natural. A través de actividades dinámicas y participativas en la programación de los cursos de la escuela, se busca despertar una conexión real con el medioambiente y fomentar hábitos responsables desde la infancia.

Entre las jornadas más destacadas de este año figuran el Blue Marina Day, que se celebrará el 29 de junio; el Blue Marina Clean Up, previsto para el 13 de julio; y el Blue Marina Subaquatic, que tendrá lugar el 13 de septiembre. Tres citas clave para aprender, participar y actuar a favor del mar.

The Puerto Portals Sailing School brings you closer to this experience through its courses and activities for children and adults, available all year round.

Puerto Portals Sailing School offers courses for children and adults throughout the year, with a variety of options available, such as sailing, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. But this year the school is offering an even more varied and complete schedule, designed to make your water sports experience even more enriching and fun.

The full moon sunset. The 11th of June, 10th of July, 9th of August and the 7th of September are all dates to mark in your diary so you don’t miss the sunset excursions organised by the Puerto Portals Sailing School to coincide with the full moon. The adventure starts before nightfall. Participants make their way to the island in front of the school on kayaks or stand-up paddle boards. Once there, they get to watch one of nature’s most beautiful displays in great company: the sun setting on one side and, at the same time, the moon rising on the horizon. An unforgettable experience.

A birthday at sea. The Puerto Portals Sailing School is also a great place to celebrate special occasions. The school can organise unique birthday parties featuring activities such as treasure hunts for the little ones and kayak or canoe rental for groups to enjoy some time at sea. They also offer family days where all the family can enjoy water sports adapted to all levels; promoting sports, coexistence and a connection with the marine environment.

SUP Yoga. As part of its commitment to innovation and wellbeing, the Sailing School launches new activities throughout the year. Some of the highlights this year are yoga, Pilates and fitness classes on stand-up paddle boards. These unique classes combine physical exercise and a connection to nature in an atmosphere as inspiring as the sea. The sessions, led by professionals, are designed to help you work on your balance, strength and concentration, tailored to your needs, making each class a unique experience on the water.

Environmental commitment. We are very aware of the impact climate change, pollution and the loss of marine biodiversity has on our planet. Our Blue Marina initiative has been running educational workshops for years – they aim to motivate children and adults alike and make them aware of the importance of caring for our natural environment. Through the dynamic and hands-on activities on the school’s schedule we strive to awaken a real connection with the environment and promote responsible habits from a young age.

Our main events this year are the Blue Marina Day which will be held on the 29th of June; the Blue Marina Clean Up scheduled for the 13th of July; and the Blue Marina Subaquatic which will take place on the 13th of September. Three key events so that you can learn, take part and take action for the benefit of our seas.

La escritora y comunicadora Tati Ballesteros inauguró el pasado 8 de abril el nuevo ciclo de conferencias Puerto Portals Talks, con un lleno absoluto de público. Su inspiradora charla, ‘Reconectando con nuestra humanidad: cómo ser más humanos en un mundo digitalizado’, abordó los efectos de la hiperconexión digital en nuestras vidas.

Puerto Portals Talks nace con el objetivo de invitar a la reflexión y al aprendizaje a través de distintas voces. Un espacio para dialogar e intercambiar ideas entre el invitado y el público, tratando de acercarnos a la resolución de los interrogantes que nos ofrece la vida.

Según Ballesteros, pasamos una media de siete horas frente al móvil. “¿La tecnología nos está acercando o nos está aislando de los demás?”. Con esta pregunta arrancó la escritora su exposición, apelando a la memoria colectiva y señalando, entre otras cosas, que hemos perdido la costumbre de redactar cartas a mano, o tener conversaciones sin pantallas debido a esta adicción a lo digital. “No es la tecnología la que nos aleja, sino el uso que hacemos de ella”.

Uno de los ejes principales de la conferencia fue la paradoja de la era digital. “Nunca hemos estado tan conectados tecnológicamente, y tan desconectados emocionalmente”, dijo. En este punto, Tati Ballesteros habló de las relaciones superficiales, de la atención fragmentada y de la fatiga digital.

Ballesteros, que además es criminóloga, defensora del pensamiento crítico y experta en análisis de la conducta, concluyó con la filosofía de “virmor”, un término que ella misma bautizó y que significa “vivir con amor incluso cuando las circunstancias son difíciles”.

Una hora de reflexiones muy interesantes, donde la experta conectó con un público emocionado y cercano. La jornada finalizó con la sesión de ‘Copa y Charla’, un espacio para seguir compartiendo ideas y reflexiones desde la calma y el encuentro personal.

Tras el éxito de la primera edición, Puerto Portals ya trabaja para las próximas ediciones de estas conferencias de la mano de personas inspiradoras. La siguiente charla se celebrará el día 21 de octubre, y continuará con su propósito de ofrecer encuentros que inspiran, conectan y transforman.

Writer and communicator Tati Ballesteros opened the brand new lecture series Puerto Portals Talks on the 8 th of April. She addressed a full house and her inspiring talk, ‘Reconnecting with our humanity: how to be more human in a digital world’, discussed the effects of digital hyperconnectivity on our lives.

Puerto Portals Talks has been created to encourage people to reflect and learn by listening to what different voices have to say. It’s a place for dialogue and the exchange of ideas between the speaker and the audience, and hopes to help us find answers to life’s many questions.

According to Ballesteros, we spend an average of seven hours a day on our phones. “Is technology bringing us together or is it isolating us?” The writer kicked off her talk with this question, appealing to our collective memory and pointing out that we no longer write letters by hand, or have screen-free conversations, amongst other things, due to our addiction to everything digital. “It isn’t the technology itself which is driving us apart, but the way we use it.”

One of the talk’s main themes was the great paradox of the digital era. “We have never been more connected technologically speaking, and yet so disconnected emotionally,” said Ballesteros. She also discussed the proliferation of superficial relationships, fragmented attention spans and digital fatigue.

Ballesteros, who is also a criminologist, defender of critical thinking and expert on behaviour analysis, concluded with the “virmor” philosophy, a term which she coined herself and which means “to live with love even when the circumstances are difficult.”

It was a very interesting hour of reflection and the speaker connected deeply with the audience. The event finished with a ‘Drinks and Chats’ session, so that everyone could share ideas and thoughts in a calm and more intimate way.

After this successful first edition, Puerto Portals is already working on future talks with an array of inspiring speakers. The next talk will be held on the 21st of October and the aim will continue to be to inspire, connect and transform.

La significativa reducción del consumo de agua potable, el ahorro energético y la regeneración de la flora y fauna marina son solo algunas de las acciones que están guiando a Puerto Portals hacia un modelo de gestión más sostenible y eficiente.

Desde que se puso en marcha el movimiento Blue Marina, no cabe duda de que la experiencia ha sido transformadora, con resultados tangibles que confirman que avanzamos en la dirección correcta.

Uno de los logros más notables ha sido la reducción del 40% en el consumo de agua potable en tan solo un año. Este resultado ha sido posible gracias a la modernización de las canalizaciones y conducciones de la red de agua del puerto, que ahora integra líneas diferenciadas para el agua potable, el riego y la red de hidrantes. Además, se ha implantado un sistema de riego por goteo en los jardines, se han instalado tres tanques de tormenta en la nueva zona comercial que recogen hasta 60 m³ de aguas pluviales, y se ha incorporado un innovador sistema de reutilización de las aguas procedentes de lavabos y duchas para el llenado de cisternas, tras pasar por un proceso de depuración. Todo ello ha sido complementado con una fuerte labor de concienciación, tanto entre el personal del puerto como entre los usuarios, sobre el valor del agua como recurso limitado.

En el ámbito energético, entre abril de 2024 y abril de 2025, Puerto Portals ha logrado reducir su dependencia de la red eléctrica gracias a la producción propia de energía a través de su pequeño pero eficiente parque solar. Esta instalación ha permitido alcanzar un ahorro del 8% en el consumo eléctrico general, con picos de hasta el 10% durante los meses de mayor radiación solar. Compuesta por 350 paneles fotovoltaicos distribuidos en las cubiertas de cuatro edificios, esta infraestructura ha sido clave en la transición hacia un modelo energético más responsable y sostenible.

Por otro lado, la regeneración de los ecosistemas marinos ha cobrado una nueva dimensión gracias a la colaboración con Ocean Ecostructures, una empresa pionera en soluciones de restauración marina a través de infraestructuras portuarias adaptadas. Hace un año, se instalaron una serie de bioestructuras especialmente diseñadas para fomentar la colonización natural de especies marinas autóctonas. Estas placas, compuestas por materiales sostenibles y configuradas con formas que imitan hábitats naturales, se integran perfectamente en el entorno del puerto, ofreciendo refugio, alimento y superficie de asentamiento a múltiples organismos. Los resultados no se han hecho esperar. A día de hoy, se ha registrado un incremento del 116% de especies que contribuyen a la estabilidad y diversidad del ecosistema incluyendo algas pardas y rojas que oxigenan el agua y forman la base de la cadena trófica, esponjas y ascidias que aportan complejidad estructural y filtran el agua, y numerosas especies de peces que contribuyen a la estabilidad y diversidad del ecosistema. También se ha comprobado un crecimiento del 207% en la acumulación de biomasa, un aumento significativo en la fijación de CO2 de biomasa y una mejora considerable en la calidad del agua. Esta transformación no solo supone una mejora ambiental visible, sino que reafirma el papel de los puertos como espacios con gran potencial de regeneración.

Los resultados de Blue Marina no solo demuestran que la sostenibilidad es posible, sino que también revelan el impacto positivo que se puede lograr cuando se actúa con visión, tecnología y compromiso colectivo.

Puerto Portals is well on the road to achieving a more sustainable and efficient management model, thanks to the significant reduction in its consumption of drinking water, energy savings and the regeneration of marine flora and fauna, amongst other things.

Since we launched the Blue Marina movement, the experience has been transformative for all of us, and it has produced tangible results which show we are moving in the right direction.

One of the most notable achievements has been the 40% reduction in the consumption of drinking water in just one year. This result has been possible thanks to the modernisation of the distribution and conduction systems for the port’s water network which now features differentiated channels for drinking water, irrigation water and the hydrant network. We have also implemented of a drip irrigation system across the port’s garden areas and installed three stormtanks in the new commercial area which can collect up to 60m3 of rain water. In addition, we have also set up an innovative system which reuses water from the toilets and showers by putting it through a purification process and then filling tanks. All of this has been complemented by our efforts to raise awareness amongst all Puerto Portals staff and customers, about what a valuable and limited resource water is.

As for energy savings, from April 2024 to April 2025, Puerto Portals has managed to reduce its dependence on the electric grid by producing its own energy through its small but highly efficient solar park. The park has allowed us to achieve an 8% saving in consumption with peaks of up to 10% during the months with the most solar intensity. Consisting of 350 photovoltaic panels distributed on the roofs of four buildings, this facility has been key in our transition towards a more responsible and sustainable energy model.

Lastly, the regeneration of marine ecosystems has gained momentum thanks to our collaboration with Ocean Ecostructures, a company which is leading the way in marine restoration solutions by adapting port infrastructure. A year ago a series of biostructures were installed which were designed to promote the natural colonisation of autochthonous marine species. These plaques, which are made using sustainable materials and whose shapes imitate natural habitats, blend seamlessly into the port’s environment offering refuge, food and a surface for multiple organisms to settle on. It has not taken long for us to see results. To date there has been a 116% increase in species which contribute to the stability and diversity of the ecosystem including brown and red seaweed which oxygenate the water and which are the base for the food web, sponges and ascidia which provide structural complexity and filter the water, and numerous species of fish which contribute to the stability and diversity of the ecosystem. Also, a 207% increase in the accumulation of biomass has been detected, as well as significant growth in biomass CO2 assimilation and a considerable improvement in the quality of the water. This transformation doesn’t just signal a visible environmental improvement; it also reaffirms the role of ports as spaces with great potential for regeneration.

Blue Marina’s results don’t just show that sustainability is possible, they also reveal the positive impact that can be achieved when we take action with conviction, technology and collective commitment.

Breakfast at Flanigan: Starting the day with breakfast at Flanigan is a classic. There’s nothing better than enjoying a great coffee with breakfast on the terrace. The apple tart: This is the star dish and the oldest on the menu. A super-fine pastry covered in the finest

slivers of apple which is at once crunchy, sweet and tart with subtle notes of butter and vanilla. It’s the perfect way to end any meal at the restaurant, in fact anyone who takes a seat at a table here should be obliged to try it.
