¡BIENVENIDOS LOS CAMBIOS! Los cambios en la vida son buenos y necesarios. Nos hacen evolucionar, aprender y seguir hacia adelante conociendo y compartiendo nuevas realidades que nos ayudan a crecer. La nueva revista de Puerto Portals es un buen ejemplo de ello: con un nuevo diseño y un estilo más moderno, ofrece contenidos acordes a nuestros valores y filosofía. Un canal de comunicación de calidad, con información útil e inspiradora para nuestros clientes y visitantes. Una nueva revista producida en Mallorca con papel ecológico y libre de plástico, fiel a nuestra manera de entender la vida. Esta es una de las acciones que estamos lanzando, y que están en sintonía con la transformación cultural y de marca que estamos desarrollando en Puerto Portals desde hace meses. La remodelación del puerto, con su palpable cambio físico, ha ido acompañada durante todo este proceso de un ejercicio de rebranding: una profunda revisión de nuestra marca y nuestra cultura de empresa, no solo en su diseño sino en lo más importante, su esencia.

It is a quality channel of communication, with useful and inspiring information for both our customers and visitors. A new magazine, produced in Mallorca with ecological paper and free of plastic, true to our way of understanding life. This is one of the actions we are launching as part of the brand and cultural transformation we have been undergoing in the port for months. The remodelling of the marina, with its evident physical change, has been accompanied throughout this process by an overhaul of our brand and our corporate culture, not only in terms of design but also in the most important aspect: its essence.

We continue to work with the aim of transforming the way in which people relate to the environment, improving the experience of our visitors day after day. With a packed calendar of events and a wide range of quality shops and businesses, we continue to be an open port that strives to create meaningful experiences for our customers. EL MAR Y LA VIDA La Odisea de Homero, Moby Dick de Herman Melville y El viejo y el mar de Ernest Hemingway son tres obras maestras de la literatura universal, en las que el mar sirve como escenario donde el hombre se mira frente al espejo. Un reflejo de la propia vida que, al igual que sucede con las profundas y oscuras aguas, sigue siendo un apasionante enigma por descubrir.

S

i los primeros humanos pisaron la tierra hace alrededor de 200.000 años al sur del río Zambeze, en África, la cuna del pensamiento y la filosofía universal se encuentra en Mileto, la antigua ciudad turca en la que nació Tales en el 624 a. C., considerado el primer filósofo de la historia (con el permiso de Sócrates).

Empezaba a jugar ya entonces el mar su papel en el devenir de la historia moderna, inspirando con su brisa a aquellos primeros hombres que se planteaban la vida como nunca antes nadie lo había hecho en ciudades e islas como Mileto, Samos, Éfeso, Estagira y Atenas, entre otras.

El mar ha sido siempre un camino abierto hacia lo desconocido. Un espacio hermoso y sobrecogedor al mismo tiempo, de horizontes infinitos sin el que sería imposible comprender nuestra existencia (los mares y océanos cubren el 70% de la superficie de la Tierra, la misma proporción de agua que contiene nuestro cuerpo).

El mar como punto de partida de la vida, como ese puerto seguro que nos acoge antes de salir a navegar como Ulises y vivir mil aventuras más o menos favorables, tratando de no soltar el timón y de transitar por aguas tranquilas y seguras. De hecho, el mar y la navegación simbolizan el curso de la vida, donde cada ser humano es semejante a una embarcación en el mar de la existencia, con las estrellas por la noche y el sol durante el día impulsándonos a sortear escollos y arrecifes, y también a descubrir tesoros (la Ítaca de Ulises como símil de la llegada al centro de nuestra alma y, por tanto, al conocimiento de uno mismo).

Del mar atraen su belleza, sus colores, su inmenso poder y su misterio. También el placer de sentir el agua salada refrescando los cuerpos, devolviéndolos a un estado sensitivo primitivo, reconocible y balsámico.

El mar como lugar en que poder nadar, jugar, meditar, amar, soñar, sentirse vivo y navegar todo lo lejos que uno quiera. Para empezar a construir, quien sabe, una historia jamás imaginada.

THE SEA AND LIFE Homer’s Odyssey, Moby Dick by Herman Melville or The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway are three masterpieces of universal literature in which the sea serves as a stage upon which humans gaze at themselves in the mirror it creates. A reflection of life itself which, like the deepest, darkest waters, is still an exciting enigma waiting to be discovered.

T

he first humans may have walked the earth around 200,000 years ago, south of the Zambezi river in Africa, but the cradle of universal philosophy and thinking is found in Miletus, the ancient Turkish city and birthplace in 624 B.C. of Thales, seen as the first philosopher in history (with all due respect to Socrates).

Back then the sea was already beginning to play its role in the course of modern history, inspiring with its breeze those first people who thought of life in ways nobody had before, in cities and on islands such as Miletus, Samos, Ephesus, Stagira and Athens, among others.

The sea has always been an open pathway to the unknown, a space at once beautiful and daunting, one of infinite horizons without which it would be impossible to comprehend our existence (seas and oceans cover 70% of the Earth’s surface, the same proportion of water our bodies contain).

We can understand the sea as a starting point for life, as that safe haven that embraces us before setting sail like Odysseus and living out a thousand more or less auspicious adventures, trying to hold the rudder fast and navigate through calm, safe waters. In fact, the sea and sailing symbolise the course of life, where every human is akin to a vessel on the sea of existence, with the stars at night and the sun during the day driving us forward to circumvent rocks and reefs, and also to discover treasures (Odysseus’ Ithaca as the simile of the arrival at the centre of our soul, and therefore knowledge of oneself).

We are attracted by the sea’s beauty, its colours, its immense power and its mystery, and also by the pleasure of feeling the salt water refreshing our bodies, returning us to a primitive sensitive state, one that is recognisable and balsamic to us.

The sea is a place where we can swim, play, meditate, love, dream and feel alive. It is a place where we can sail as far away as we like and who knows, maybe start building a never-imagined story.

EN EL ESPACIO INFINITO “Mi verdadera pasión es el mar, y después la fotografía”, cuenta Enric Adrián Gener (Ciutadella, Menorca, 1982). “A veces es difícil caminar, nadar o viajar con la cámara a cuestas. Pero otras veces es la cámara la que me empuja a caminar más lejos, a nadar más profundo o viajar durante más tiempo”.

“Mi trabajo es un documental sobre la vida real que sucede a mi alrededor. Y esto siempre está relacionado con el mar de alguna manera”.

“M

e encanta la transparencia y la calma de las aguas del Mediterráneo. Levantarme con la salida del sol y navegar hacia el horizonte para lanzarme al mar cuando ya no se ve con claridad qué hay en el fondo. El mar parece una balsa de aceite, los rayos de sol penetran en él y se pierden en el azul intenso. Entonces tengo la sensación de que estoy en un espacio infinito”, cuenta Enric Adrián Gener, quien tras terminar la universidad en 2009 se compró una cámara submarina y a través de ella se lanzó a descubrir el mundo.

Gener no es solo un fotógrafo y artista, es un apneísta que a través de la fotografía alarga sus experiencias sumergidas dándoles otra dimensión. En cada foto improvisa observando la interacción de las personas y los animales con el mar, así como las sensaciones del agua en calma, la paz y el silencio de mares y océanos como el Mar de Cortés, Mar de China Meridional, Mar de Java, Mar Muerto, Mar Rojo, Mar del Norte, Mar de los Sargazos, Mar Caribe, Mar de Tasmania, Golfo de México y los océanos Pacífico y Atlántico. Además, por supuesto, de su amado Mar Mediterráneo.

El equipo de Enric es ligero: máscara, tubo, aletas y cámara sin flash. Con el tiempo y la experiencia ha conseguido hacer del mar algo tan cotidiano que ya no le interesa el buceo con botella. Prefiere la apnea por su simplicidad, su elegancia, su poco impacto en el entorno marino y porque conserva el romanticismo del hombre relacionándose con el mar. “Mi trabajo es un documental sobre la vida real que sucede a mi alrededor. Y esto siempre está relacionado con el mar de alguna manera. Formalmente intento ser sencillo y limpio, sin sobrecargar el encuadre con demasiados elementos, solo tomando lo esencial que te empuje a vivir la experiencia de estar bajo el agua en los mismos paisajes y situaciones que yo he estado”.

Enric Adrián Gener IN THE INFINITE SPACE “My true passion is the sea, and then photography”, says photographer Enric Adrián Gener (Ciutadella, Menorca, 1982).

“Sometimes it’s difficult to walk, swim or travel carrying your camera, but other times it’s the camera itself that drives me to walk further, swim deeper or travel for longer”.

“I

love the transparency and calmness of the waters of the Mediterranean. Getting up at sunrise and sailing towards the horizon, and jumping into the sea when you can’t see what’s at the bottom any more. The sea is like a millpond, the sun’s rays penetrate it and are lost in the intense blue. That is when I feel I am in an infinite space”, says Enric Adrián Gener who, after finishing university in 2009, purchased an underwater camera and set off to discover the world through it.

Gener is not only a photographer and artist: he is a freediver who uses photography to extend his diving experiences, giving them a new dimension. In every photograph he improvises, observing the interaction of people and sea creatures. He captures the sensations brought about by calm waters, as well as the peace and silence of seas and oceans. He has free dived in the Sea of Cortez, the South China Sea, the Java Sea, the Dead Sea, the Red Sea, the North Sea, the Sargasso Sea, the Caribbean, the Tasman Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and, of course, his beloved Mediterranean Sea. Enric’s equipment is light: a mask, a snorkel, fins and a flashless camera. With time and experience, he has managed to turn the sea into such an everyday place that he is no longer interested in scuba diving. He prefers freediving for its simplicity and elegance, for the minimal impact it has on the marine environment, and because it conserves the romanticism of humans relating to the sea. “My work is a documentary of the real life that goes on around me, and that is always related to the sea in some way. Formally, I try to keep it simple and clean, without overloading the frame with too many elements, taking just what is essential to prompt you to live out the experience of being underwater in the same seascapes and situations I have been in”.

“EL MEDITERRÁNEO DEBE SER EL ESCAPARATE PARA LOS MARES Y OCÉANOS DEL MUNDO” Manu San Félix (Madrid, 1964) creció viendo en la televisión a “dos grandes genios” y amantes de la naturaleza, Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente y Jacques Cousteau, que le sirvieron de inspiración. Con más de 46 expediciones de National Geographic a sus espaldas, el objetivo del biólogo y divulgador del mundo submarino es “transmitir la belleza y la importancia de la naturaleza para disfrutar más y mejor de nuestras vidas”.

tiburones tienen una importancia enorme para la salud de los océanos.

n primer lugar, Manu, ¿Qué le atrajo del mar?

Crecí en Vizcaya, en pleno Mar Cantábrico, y ya desde pequeño me encantaba mirar lo que había bajo la superficie del agua. Todavía me sigue atrayendo, hago unas 300 inmersiones al año y siempre estoy a gusto. Cuando me sumerjo mi sensación es muy placentera.

¿Por qué todo lo que hagamos en el Mediterráneo tiene una repercusión acelerada en comparación con otros mares?

Porque solo está ventilado por el Estrecho de Gibraltar y sus aguas tardan un siglo en renovarse. El Mediterráneo es el mar más contaminado, el que más rápido se sobrecalienta y el que tiene mayor sobrepesca. El mensaje que debemos lanzar es que, si lo hacemos bien, pronto notaremos los cambios. La recuperación del Mar Mediterráneo debe ser el escaparate de cómo gestionar todos los mares y océanos del mundo.

¿Qué le llevó a los 27 años a irse a vivir a Formentera?

La isla me enamoró y allí monté una escuela de buceo, que me permitió vivir al lado del mar en un lugar maravilloso donde pude poner en práctica mis pasiones: la biología, el submarinismo y la imagen submarina, facetas que me llevaron a trabajar para National Geographic. En Formentera empecé un sueño.

¿Por qué es importante proteger la posidonia?

Porque es muy eficaz secuestrando dióxido de carbono de la atmósfera. Un metro cuadrado de posidonia secuestra la misma cantidad que 15 metros cuadrados de selva del Amazonas. Filtra las aguas costeras, protege las costas y actúa como muelles submarinos que permiten la estabilidad y formación de las playas. En las últimas décadas se ha perdido cerca del 35% de su superficie, y con ello estamos perdiendo un tesoro natural.

De todos los lugares a los que ha viajado, ¿cuál le parece el más hermoso?

Es difícil comparar las diferentes bellezas de la Antártida con la de los arrecifes de coral del Océano Índico, por ejemplo. ¿Cuál es más hermosa? Yo no consigo encontrar la respuesta. La belleza es belleza. ¿El paraíso es un lugar donde no haya ninguna huella humana?

Sí, porque no ves nada más que naturaleza. No hay aviones, ni basura, ni ninguna especie invasora. Cuando ves la belleza natural la puedes definir como paraíso.

Ojalá todo el mundo tuviera la oportunidad de verla, porque da placer y felicidad. Y hay que protegerla no solo porque regula el clima y aporta alimentos, sino porque contemplarla y disfrutarla nos hace felices. Incluso el silencio es diferente. Como el de las Islas de Diego Ramírez, al sur del Cabo de Hornos, en Chile.

¿Cuán importante es la creación de un proyecto de impacto social y ambiental como Blue Marina en Puerto Portals?

Puerto Portals es un referente a nivel internacional por sus instalaciones, y me parece fenomenal que también tenga la ambición de serlo a nivel de conservación, de sostenibilidad y de recuperación del Mediterráneo.

Son objetivos compatibles, posibles y necesarios. ¿Dónde encuentra usted la mayor felicidad?

La felicidad es algo que todos buscamos, es difícil de conseguir, pero debemos seguir nuestro camino. La felicidad es la suma de las felicidades de cada día. Yo intento transmitir buenas sensaciones, vibraciones positivas y cariño a los que están a mi alrededor. El amor debe formar parte de cada día. Sin amor no creo que se pueda ser feliz, hay que esforzarse y sufrir por él. Hay momentos que el querer duele y hay que saber cuáles son esos momentos.

¿Es cierto que hemos terminado con el 99% de los tiburones del Mediterráneo?

Sí, llevamos décadas pescando unos cien millones de tiburones al año. El mar es muy rico, pero no infinito. El tiburón en sí no tiene mucho valor, pero las aletas sí. Hay un mercado que mueve miles de millones en torno a sus aletas y esa es la principal razón. Los 30

Manu San Félix “THE MEDITERRANEAN HAS TO BE THE SHOWCASE FOR THE WORLD’S SEAS AND OCEANS” Manu San Félix (Madrid, 1964) grew up watching the “two great geniuses” and lovers of nature, Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente and Jacques Cousteau, on television. They were an inspiration to him. With more than 46 expeditions with National Geographic to his name, the goal of this marine biologist and reporter on the underwater world is “to transmit the beauty and importance of nature so that we enjoy our lives more and in a better way”.

F

irst of all Manu, what attracted you to the sea?

I grew up in Vizcaya, right beside the Cantabrian Sea and from a very early age I loved looking at what was below the surface of the water. I’m still drawn to it, I do about 300 dives a year and I always feel good diving. When I dive, the feeling I have is one of great pleasure.

Why does everything we do in the Mediterranean have accelerated repercussions in comparison with other seas?

Because it is only ventilated through the Straits of Gibraltar and its waters take 100 years to be fully renewed.

The Mediterranean is the most polluted sea, the one that overheats the fastest and the most overfished one. The message we should put out is that if we do things right, we will notice the changes quickly. The recovery of the Mediterranean Sea should be an example of how to manage the world’s seas and oceans.

What made you go to live in Formentera at the age of 27?

I fell in love with the island and set up a diving school there, which enabled me to live beside the sea in a wonderful place where I could put my passions into practice: biology, diving and underwater imagery, factors that led me to work for National Geographic. In Formentera I started a dream.

Why is it important to protect Posidonia oceanica?

Because this seagrass is highly efficient in drawing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. One square metre of Posidonia draws the same amount as 15 square metres of Amazon jungle. It filters coastal waters, protects the coasts and acts as underwater springs that enable the stability and formation of beaches. Over recent years we have lost nearly 35% of its surface area, and this means we are losing a natural treasure.

Of all the places you have travelled to, which is the most beautiful, in your opinion?

It’s difficult to compare the different types of beauty, of the Antarctic with that of the coral reefs of the Indian Ocean, for example. Which is more beautiful? I can’t give you the answer. Beauty is beauty.

How important is the creation of a project with a social and environmental impact like Blue Marina in Puerto Portals?

Puerto Portals is a global benchmark for its installations, and I think it’s fabulous that it also has the ambition to become a benchmark in terms of conservation, sustainability and recovery of the Mediterranean. These are compatible, possible and necessary objectives.

Is paradise a place where there is no trace of humans?

Yes, because all you see is nature. There are no aeroplanes, no rubbish, no invasive species. When you see natural beauty, you can define it as paradise. I wish everyone had the chance to see it, because it brings pleasure and happiness. It must be protected, not only because it regulates the climate and provides food, but because contemplating and enjoying it makes us happy. Even the silence is different. Like that of the Diego Ramírez Islands, south of Cape Horn in Chile.

Where do you find your greatest happiness?

Happiness is something we all seek. It’s difficult to achieve, but we have to carry on down our path. Happiness is the sum of the happy moments of each day. I try to transmit good feelings, positive vibrations and affection to those around me. Love should form part of every day.

I don’t believe one can be happy without love. You have to strive and suffer for it. There are times when it hurts to love but you have to identify which moments those are.

Is it true that we have erradicated 99% of the sharks in the Mediterranean?

Yes, for decades now we have been fishing around one hundred million sharks a year. The sea is immensely rich, but not infinite. Sharks in themselves aren’t particularly valuable, but their fins are. There is a market for shark fins that moves millions, and that’s the main reason. Sharks are hugely important for the health of the oceans.

Cuanto más conoces, más cuidas y más valoras lo que tienes. En este aspecto, el deporte es la mejor vía para integrar los conceptos y conocimientos de conservación marina. Blue Marina quiere ser un referente y generar un puerto autosuficiente, que tenga una visión circular de cómo se gestiona, tanto a nivel energético como de residuos, con plena vocación hacia la conservación del mar y el futuro.

Escuchar y formar a nuestros equipos para que el cambio sea desde dentro hacia afuera. Para lograr los objetivos marcados, se está fomentando el aspecto cultural con todos los empleados de la marina, con el fin de lograr una transición lo más rápida posible hacia un puerto más responsable.

Nuevos eventos Blue Marina: 10/06 Blue Marina Day. Una jornada en la Escuela de Vela con talleres de conservación marina y deportes acuáticos en colaboración con la Fundación Palma Aquarium.

Nuestro objetivo se centra en generar estrategias de digitalización, mejoras técnicas en el ahorro energético y trabajando en favor de la conservación y protección del medio marino de todo el entorno natural que rodea al puerto.

As well as opening up the movement to anyone who wishes to join the Blue Marina community, for two years we have been working internally at Puerto Portals to make improvements in all the work areas we operate in, listening and training our teams so that the change comes from the inside out. In order to achieve the set goals, we are working from a cultural perspective with all the workers at the marina, to ensure that the transition towards becoming a more responsible port is achieved as quickly as possible.

New Blue Marina events: 10/06 Blue Marina Day. A day held at the Sailing School, with marine conservation workshops and water sports, in collaboration with the Palma Aquarium Foundation.

29/07 Blue Marina Clean Up. The goal of this event is for the Puerto Portals community to contribute with a positive impact on the local coastal environment, leaving the area in a better condition than we found it in and enjoying an outdoor activity together which will strengthen our connection to and respect for the environment.

We are working on generating digitalisation strategies and technical improvements, as well as improving the conservation and protection of the marine environment and of the port’s natural surroundings.

Another one of the fundamental pillars of Blue Marina is education. As a result, we have developed an educational programme where both children and adults can connect with the island’s natural beauty and learn about the environment that surrounds us, raising an awareness of the importance of protecting and preserving it. NGOs like Save The Med, Arrels Marines, Fun-

Faros de Baleares

LUCES EN MITAD DE LA NOCHE Se pone el sol, cae la noche y aparece la luna. Hace siglos, antes de que Thomas Edison inventara la primera bombilla en 1880, la luz era un bien preciado. En el mar, las embarcaciones se guiaban por las luces de los faros, que al principio eran llamas alimentadas por leña o carbón, hasta que llegaron las lámparas de gas o aceite y, por último, la electricidad. En las costas de Baleares siguen en funcionamiento algunos faros históricos, envueltos en un halo de misterio y belleza.

ás allá de su funcionalidad, en épocas pasadas los faros se consideraban joyas arquitectónicas, como el Faro de Alejandría o el Coloso de Rodas, catalogados entre las maravillas del mundo antiguo, ambos destruidos por un terremoto.

La profesión de farero era complicada entonces, y más cuando debían vivir en islotes en los que en días de temporal, y dada la cercanía de los faros con el mar, el agua entraba por las ventanas. Días en los que el suministro de víveres, incluso, se posponía hasta alcanzar límites angustiosos para los fareros y sus familias.

Con la llegada de las nuevas tecnologías, se ha ido perdiendo la labor artesanal de esta profesión. El último farero de Mallorca se jubiló hace dos años. Hoy todos los faros de la isla son controlados a distancia.

Mallorca cuenta con numerosos faros, entre ellos el tercero más antiguo de Europa y del mundo: el Faro de Portopí, construido entre el siglo XIII y XIV. Su ubicación original no fue siempre sobre la Torre de Señales en la que podemos observarlo hoy. Hasta el año 1617 se encontraba dentro del Fuerte de San Carlos, pero cada vez que se disparaban los cañones los cristales de la linterna del faro se rompían. De ahí el cambio de ubicación.

El Faro de Portopí fue el único en Baleares hasta el siglo XIX, cuando ingleses y franceses, que bordeaban las costas españolas con sus embarcaciones, presionaron para que hubiera más luz. Por esta razón, casi todos los faros de Baleares fueron construidos entre los siglos XIX y XX. Es el caso del Faro de Formentor, de 1863. Con 210 metros de altura es el más elevado de las islas. Su complicado acceso hacía que llegar a él no fuera una tarea fácil. Incluso el obispo de Mallorca ordenó levantar un altar próximo al faro, para que los obreros que trabajaron en su construcción pudieran acudir a misa.

El Faro de la Creu y el Faro de Cap Gros fueron los primeros que funcionaron con electricidad, y todavía hoy marcan la entrada del Puerto de Sóller, que hace un siglo constituía el punto de conexión entre Mallorca, la península y Francia.

Al sur de la isla, el Faro de Cap Blanc empezó utilizando aceite de oliva para iluminar.

Este faro marca uno de los dos extremos de la bahía de Palma. Al otro extremo se encuentra el Faro de Cala Figuera, cerca de Puerto Portals.

Al Faro de Tramuntana, que da luz al estrecho situado entre Mallorca y la Dragonera, se puede acceder a través de una excursión desde Sant Elm. Otro faro histórico es el de Capdepera, desde el que se divisa la isla de Menorca en días despejados. Y al este de la isla, el Faro de Portocolom conserva entre sus paredes multitud de historias, como la ocupación por soldados alemanes en 1937.

El Faro de Ses Salines, el más al sur de la isla, fue el primero en iluminarse con paneles solares.

En Menorca, Ibiza y Formentera también hay faros llenos de historia y belleza. En Menorca, el Faro de Cavalleria utilizó petróleo para dar luz hasta los 80. Y el Faro de Favàritx fue el primero en construirse con hormigón. En Formentera, el Faro de Barbaria fue protagonista hace dos décadas de la película Lucía y el sexo, mientras que en Ibiza el Faro de Moscarter es el más elevado con 52 metros de altura.

Recientemente, el artista surcoreano Youngjae Lih se inspiró en los faros de Mallorca para crear un universo propio con el que rinde homenaje a los antiguos fareros de la isla y su particular modo de vida.

Lighthouses of the Balearics LIGHTS IN THE DEAD OF NIGHT The sun goes down, night falls and the moon comes out.

Centuries ago, well before Thomas Edison invented the first light bulb in 1880, light was a precious commodity. At sea, ships were guided by lighthouses, which were initially naked flames fed by wood or coal, until gas or oil lamps arrived, and finally electricity. Some historic lighthouses still function on the coasts of the Balearic Islands, shrouded in a halo of mystery and beauty.

side from their functionality, in bygone ages lighthouses were seen as architectural jewels, like the Lighthouse of Alexandria or the Colossus of Rhodes, both considered wonders of the ancient world and destroyed by an earthquake.

The profession of lighthouse keeper was complicated back then, and even more so when they were forced to live on tiny islands. Being so close to the sea meant that water would pour in through the lighthouse windows on stormy days. This is the reason why on some occasions the delivery of food supplies was delayed, leading both the lighthouse keepers and their families to become rather distressed.

The artisanal side of this profession has gradually been lost with the arrival of new technology. The last lighthouse keeper on Mallorca retired two years ago. Nowadays, all of the island’s lighthouses are controlled remotely.

The Bishop of Mallorca even ordered that an altar be erected near the lighthouse, so that the labourers working on the construction site could go to mass.

The Lighthouses of La Creu and Cap Gros were the first to function with electricity, and they still mark the entrance to the Port of Sóller today. This harbour represented the point of connection between Mallorca, the peninsula and France a century ago.

In the south of the island, the Cap Blanc Lighthouse first used olive oil to produce light. This lighthouse signals one of the two tips of the bay of Palma. On the other side stands the lighthouse of Cala Figuera, near Puerto Portals.

The Tramuntana Lighthouse, which lights up the strait between Mallorca and Dragonera, can be visited on an excursion that leaves from Sant Elm. Another historic lighthouse is that of Capdepera, from where the island of Menorca can be seen on clear days. In the east of the island, the Portocolom Lighthouse conserves a host of stories within its walls, such as the occupation

by German soldiers in 1937.

The Lighthouse of Ses Salines (the southernmost one on the island) was the first to be lit up with solar panels.

Mallorca has numerous lighthouses, including the third-oldest in Europe and the world: the Portopí Lighthouse, which was built in the 13th and 14th centuries. Its original location was not on the Signal Tower where it can be seen today. Until the year 1617 it was inside the Fort of San Carlos, but every time the cannons were fired the glass of the lighthouse’s lantern would break.

As a result of this, the lighthouse was relocated.

The Portopí Lighthouse was actually the only one in the Balearics until the 19th century, when the English and French who sailed around the coast of Spain in their vessels, insisted there should be more light. For this reason, nearly all of the lighthouses in the Balearics were constructed in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera also have lighthouses steeped in history and beauty. On Menorca, the Lighthouse of Cavalleria used petroleum to cast its light over the sea until the 1980s, and the Favàritx lighthouse was the first to be built using concrete. On Formentera, the Lighthouse of Barbaria was a protagonist of the film Sex and Lucía two decades ago, while on Ibiza the Moscarter lighthouse is the island’s tallest, at 52 metres.

Recently the South Korean artist Youngjae Lih drew inspiration from the lighthouses of Mallorca to create a universe all his own, with which he pays homage to the island’s former lighthouse keepers and their peculiar way of life.

This is the case of the Formentor Lighthouse, which dates back to 1863. Standing 210 metres high, it is the tallest in the archipelago. The difficult access route up to the lighthouse meant reaching it was no easy task.

PUERTO PORTALS DE AYER A HOY El 4 de julio de 1986 se inauguraba oficialmente Puerto Portals, con el sonido de la campana que aún hoy puede contemplarse a la entrada de la Torre de Capitanía. La construcción del puerto fue uno de los grandes acontecimientos de la época en Mallorca, con amarres para barcos de hasta 60 metros de eslora y una amplia zona comercial con boutiques y restaurantes que pronto se convirtió en el centro neurálgico de la vida social en la isla.

odo empezó durante las visitas a Mallorca del empresario Dr. Klaus Graf y su esposa Margarita Graf a bordo de su barco en los años sesenta y setenta. Durante aquellas travesías se fraguó la idea de construir un puerto diferente en España y que fuera un referente en el Mediterráneo. Un lugar que estuviera vivo todo el año, con muchos jardines y una amplia zona comercial con tiendas, buenos restaurantes, supermercado, quiosco de prensa y otros servicios. “El primer año los mallorquines eran reticentes a abrir sus negocios en Puerto Portals”, rememoraba Margarita en la celebración de los 25 años del puerto, “así que para incentivar la activación de la zona comercial, les propusimos pagarles el alquiler, la luz y el agua. Fue asombroso ver cómo con los años, una vez que el puerto se convirtió en el centro de moda de la isla, la gente se interesaba por Puerto Portals para abrir sus negocios”.

Puerto Portals se creó con la idea de no ser un simple “aparcamiento” de embarcaciones, sino un lugar con movimiento tanto en temporada alta como en temporada baja, capaz de dar cabida a yates de gran eslora y también a embarcaciones más pequeñas, así como a visitantes que sencillamente quisieran pasar un rato agradable junto al mar. Durante los primeros años, los amarres más solicitados fueron para esloras de 8 a 10 metros, mientras que hoy la demanda ha crecido mucho para toda clase de esloras. “Desde el principio hemos estado muy encima de los negocios que nos solicitaban abrir en la zona comercial”, explicaba Margarita Graf, “qué tipo de ropa vendían, qué marcas de relojes, qué clase de comida querían servir, qué mobiliario iban a utilizar: nunca hemos estado interesados en alquilar locales a empresas que quisieran estar en el puerto sólo para hacer dinero. Por encima de eso siempre hemos cuidado que los clientes y visitantes se sientan como en su casa”.

La innovación emprendida en el puerto, liderada por Corinna Graf desde hace unos años y que todavía sigue su curso, se ha centrado en dos grandes objetivos: por un lado, mejorar la experiencia de los visitantes gracias a las nuevas instalaciones y a la remodelación de sus infraestructuras, integrando nuevos sistemas y nuevas tecnologías. Por el otro, ser parte del cambio hacia la sostenibilidad y liderarlo en el sector de los puertos deportivos, con la misión de proteger el entorno como parte fundamental de la transformación cultural y de valores que está desarrollando Puerto Portals, con vistas a un futuro mejor y más consciente para toda la sociedad.

PUERTO PORTALS THEN AND NOW Puerto Portals was officially inaugurated on 4 th July 1986, with the ringing of the bell that can still be seen today at the entrance of the Captaincy Tower. The construction of the port was one of the great events of Mallorca in that era, with berths for boats measuring up to 60 metres in length and a large shopping area with boutiques and restaurants that soon became the hub of the island’s social life.

t all started during the trips to Mallorca of entrepreneur Dr. Klaus Graf and his wife Margarita Graf, on board their boat in the sixties and seventies. On those voyages the idea took shape of building a harbour in Spain that would be different, and a landmark in the Mediterranean. A place that would be lively all year round, with plenty of gardens and a large commercial area with shops, good restaurants, a supermarket, a news kiosk and other services. “During the first year, Mallorcans were reticent about opening their businesses in Puerto Portals”, Mrs. Margarita recalled at the celebration of the port’s 25th anniversary, “so, in order to encourage the activation of the commercial area, we offered them to pay their rent, electricity and water bills. It was amazing to see how, over the years, once the port had become the island’s fashion hub, people became interested in opening their businesses in Puerto Portals”.

Puerto Portals was created with the idea that it would not be a mere “parking space” for vessels, but a place with movement during both the high and low seasons. The idea was to create a marina, capable of receiving large yachts as well as smaller boats, and also visitors who simply wanted to spend and enjoyable time by the sea. For the first few years, the most sought-after moorings were for boats measuring 8 to 10 metres in length, but now demand has grown immensely for all vessel lengths.

“From the beginning we were very strict about the businesses people wanted to open in the shopping area”, explained Margarita Graf. “What kind of clothes and brands of watches they wanted to sell, what type of food they wanted to serve and even what furnishings they were going to use. We have never been interested in simply renting out premises to companies that wanted to be in the port just to make money. Over and above that, we have always taken care to ensure that our customers and visitors feel very much at home”.

The innovation undertaken in the port over the past few years, has been led by Corinna Graf and is still in progress. It has focused on two broad objectives: one, to improve the visitor’s experience thanks to the new facilities and the remodelling of its infrastructures, integrating new systems and technologies, and the other, to be part of the shift towards sustainability. The ultimate aim is to protect the environment as a fundamental part of the transformation of culture and values that Puerto Portals is developing, with a view to creating a better, more aware future for society as a whole.

EN LA ÉLITE MUNDIAL Mallorca se posiciona a nivel internacional con pruebas e instalaciones deportivas de primer nivel. El ATP Mallorca Championships de Tenis, la Challenge Ciclista Mallorca, el Mallorca Golf Open o la Puerto Portals 52 Super Series Sailing Week son algunas de las competiciones que ponen el foco mediático en la isla.

Eventos que no solo atraen a los mejores deportistas en su especialidad, sino también a un turismo más consciente con los valores de la isla.

na de las mayores leyendas del deporte de todos los tiempos es Rafa Nadal, todavía en activo. El tenista mallorquín, ganador de 22 Grand Slams, siempre ha mostrado su gran compromiso con la isla y con su deporte. La Rafa Nadal Academy es el mejor ejemplo de ello. En esta academia de alto rendimiento se forman las estrellas del futuro, y también algunos de los mejores jugadores del momento, como el propio Nadal, el noruego Casper Ruud (nº 4 del ranking ATP) o el canadiense Felix Auger-Aliassime (nº 12).

El filón mediático de una figura como Rafa Nadal también ha contribuido a que en la isla se celebre desde hace varios años el ATP Mallorca Championships. Un torneo que reúne en la hierba del Mallorca Country Club de Santa Ponsa a figuras como Novak Djokovic, Stefanos Tsitsipas o Nick Kyrgios, entre otros.

Más de 20 campos de golf de primera categoría dan buena cuenta de que la isla es un paraíso para los amantes de este deporte. El pasado mes de octubre, el Golf de Son Muntaner albergó la primera edición del Mallorca Golf Open, un torneo englobado dentro del European Tour. Catorce mil personas llegadas de todas partes del mundo presenciaron in situ la primera victoria de la promesa alemana Yannik Paul, que embocó un putt de cuatro metros y medio en el hoyo 18 para alzarse con la victoria en un emocionante final.

Una larguísima “serpiente” multicolor recorre cada mes de enero las carreteras de la isla. Es el pelotón de participantes de la Challenge Ciclista Mallorca, la primera gran carrera del año.

El nivel de la prueba es muy alto y tiene una gran repercusión a nivel global. En la última edición participaron figuras como el doble campeón mundial (en 2020 y 2021) Julian Alaphilippe o el portugués también campeón del mundo (en 2013) Rui Costa. También ciclistas que han hecho pódium en una de tres grandes vueltas, como Hugh Carthy, o ganadores de etapa del Tour de Francia como Warren Barguil o el incombustible Thomas De Gendt.

Sin aparcar del todo la bicicleta, cerca de 4.000 triatletas de toda Europa participan cada año en el Ironman 70.3, una competición que incluye 1,9 km de natación, 90 km de bicicleta y 21,1 km de carrera a pie. Distancias recorridas en medio de la exuberante naturaleza del norte de la isla.

También los amantes del fútbol pueden disfrutar en vivo desde hace dos temporadas de los mejores jugadores de Primera División. Las figuras del Real Madrid y del F.C. Barcelona, entre otros equipos, se enfrentan en el remodelado estadio de Son Moix una vez al año al R.C.D. Mallorca, lo que supone un acontecimiento en la isla.

Pero sin duda el deporte rey en Mallorca sigue siendo la vela. Un deporte que Puerto Portals ha fomentado desde sus inicios, albergando algunas de las mejores competiciones.

Desde hace varias ediciones, la marina es sede de las 52 Super Series Puerto Portals Sailing Week, el mejor circuito para barcos monocascos del mundo. En esta regata participan las mejores embarcaciones y los mejores tripulantes, en un ambiente de gran competición entre estos Fórmula 1 del mar, para disfrute de los miles de aficionados que esos días llenan el puerto.

Sport PART OF THE GLOBAL ELITE Mallorca is positioning itself on the international stage with first-class trials and sports installations. The ATP Mallorca tennis Championships, the Challenge Ciclista Mallorca, the Mallorca Golf Open or the Puerto Portals 52 Super Series Sailing Week are some of the competitions that draw the media to the island.

Events that attract not only the best sportspeople from each discipline, but also tourists who have a greater awareness of the island’s values.

ne of the greatest sporting legends of all time is Rafa Nadal, who is still an active sports figure. The Mallorcan tennis player, winner of 22 Grand Slams, has always shown great commitment to the island and its sport. The Rafa Nadal Academy is the best example of this. This high-performance academy is where the stars of the future train, along with some of the best players of the moment, like Nadal himself, the Norwegian Casper Ruud (ranked no. 4 by the ATP) or the Canadian Felix AugerAliassime (no. 12 seed).

The impact of a figure like Rafa Nadal has also resulted in the Mallorca ATP Championships being held on the island for several years now. The tournament brings names like Novak Djokovic, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Nick Kyrgios, among others, to the grass of the Mallorca Country Club in Santa Ponsa.

Almost 4,000 triathletes from all over Europe, take part in the Ironman 70.3 every year. This competition includes swimming for 1.9 km, cycling for 90 km and running for 21.1 km. These distances are covered in the midst of the lush nature of the north of the island.

Football fans have also been able to enjoy seeing the best players of the Spanish first division live for the last two seasons. The players of Real Madrid and F.C. Barcelona, as well as other teams, come up against R.C.D. Mallorca once a year in the refurbished Son Moix stadium, a huge event on the island.

More than 20 first-rate golf courses are testament to the fact that the island is a paradise for enthusiasts of this sport. Last October, Golf de Son Muntaner hosted the first Mallorca Golf Open, a tournament framed within the European Tour. Fourteen thousand people from all over the world witnessed the first victory of rising German star Yannik Paul as it happened. Paul sank a four-and-a-half metre putt at hole 18 to claim victory in what was a thrilling final.

There is no doubt, however, that the premier sport on Mallorca is still sailing, a discipline Puerto Portals has breathed life into since its origin, hosting some of the very best competitions.

For several years now, the marina has been the venue for the 52 Super Series Puerto Portals Sailing Week, the best circuit in the world for monohulls. The top vessels and crews take part in this regatta, in a highly competitive atmosphere among these F1s of the sea, for the enjoyment of the thousands of fans who fill up the port over these days.

Every January, a long, multi-coloured “snake” moves along the island’s roads - the peloton of participants in the Challenge Ciclista Mallorca, the first big race of the year. The level of the competition is extremely high, and it has a big impact globally. Last year, personalities 64

Que los alumnos se enamoren del mar y aprendan a protegerlo a través del deporte. Esta es la misión de la Escuela de Vela Puerto Portals, que durante todo el año ofrece cursos y actividades para niños y adultos.

D

eslizarse por el agua en una embarcación, piragua o tabla, y escuchar nada más que los sonidos propios del mar: las olas y el viento entremezclándose con la respiración propia del esfuerzo. Una sensación única que no puede explicarse con palabras, ya que debe ser vivida para alcanzar su máxima expresión.

Compañerismo, orden y cuidado del mar son valores que los niños aprenden en la Escuela de Vela Puerto Portals desde los seis años y en todos los cursos que se ofrecen. Actividades como vela, paddle surf, windsurf o piragüismo hacen especial hincapié en la conservación del entorno marino.

De hecho, durante el cursos de verano, las principales organizaciones de conservación marina (Save the Med, Shark Med, Arrels Marines y Fundación Palma Aquarium) imparten talleres para aumentar la conciencia de los niños y niñas sobre la importancia de proteger y conservar nuestro mar.

Con dos equipos de competición, uno de kayak y otro de vela clase Optimist, lo principal es que los alumnos disfruten de la actividad ya sea entrenando o compitiendo, y que sobre todo nunca abandonen la pasión por el mar al hacerse mayores.

Cursos para todas las edades. En verano la Escuela ofrece cursos de iniciación, para que los niños puedan practicar piragua y paddle surf por la mañana, y vela por la tarde. Los cursos juveniles añaden también windsurf. Además, se celebran jornadas para tomar conciencia sobre la importancia de cuidar el entorno marino, como el Blue Marina Day (10 de junio) o el Blue Marina Clean Up (29 de julio), y eventos como el Día del Carmen (16 de julio) o las cuatro salidas con luna llena (4 de junio, 3 de julio, 1 de agosto y 31 de agosto).

Durante todos los sábados de invierno se ofrecen cursos de iniciación a la vela, desde los 6 a los 18 años, mientras que los domingos los cursos están reservados a los adultos.

Otro de los objetivos es enseñar a los alumnos que son ellos los que deben llevar el barco, y no el barco el que debe llevarlos a ellos. Hacerles entender que navegar

Puerto Portals Sailing School FALLING IN LOVE WITH THE SEA Falling in love with the sea and learning to protect it though sport: this is is the mission of the Puerto Portals Sailing School, offering courses and activities for children and adults throughout the year.

liding through the water in a boat or canoe or on a board, hearing no more than the sounds of the sea itself – the waves and the wind mingling with one’s own breathing, made louder by the effort involved. This is a unique sensation that cannot be expressed in words. One has to experience it in order to fully understand its true meaning.

Companionship, order and caring for the sea are all values that children learn at the Puerto Portals Sailing School from the age of six and in all the courses that are offered.

Activities such as sailing, paddle surfing, windsurfing or canoeing place particular emphasis on marine conservation.

In fact, during the summer courses, the main marine conservation organisations (Save the Med, Shark Med, Arrels Marines and Fundación Palma Aquarium) offer workshops to raise children’s awareness of the importance of protecting and conserving our sea.

Another goal is to teach the pupils that they are the ones who have to navigate the boat and not the other way around. This allows them to understand that sailing is very intuitive once you know which way the wind blows, and how the boat responds to it.

With two competition teams (one kayak team and another Optimist class sailing team), we do our utmost to ensure the children enjoy the activity, whether they are training or competing. Above all, we encourage them to continue developing their passion for the sea, as they grow up.

Courses for all ages. In summer, the school offers initiation courses for children to practise canoeing and paddle surfing in the morning and sailing in the afternoon. The junior courses also include windsurfing. Special events are also organised to raise awareness of the importance of protecting the surroundings and the marine environment. These include Blue Marina Day (10th June) or the Blue Marina Clean Up (29th July), as well as events such as the Día del Carmen (16th July) or the four full moon outings (4th June, 3rd July, 1st August and 31st August).

In winter, sailing initiation courses for 6 to 18-year-olds take place every Saturday, and on Sundays the courses are reserved for adults.

Neuendorf House

MINIMALISMO ARQUITECTÓNICO ENTRE ALMENDROS Pionero de la corriente minimalista europea, el arquitecto John Pawson (Halifax, Inglaterra, 1949), asombra con la pureza de las líneas y su gran conocimiento de la luz. Situada en medio de un campo de almendros y olivos en Santanyí, al sureste de Mallorca, la Casa Neuendorf, diseñada y construida a finales de los años ochenta para un marchante de arte alemán, es considerada una de las joyas del minimalismo arquitectónico del siglo XX.

A la hora de diseñar la Casa Neuendorf, John Pawson, junto a su colega Claudio Silvestrin, sacó lo mejor de su repertorio para crear una residencia única en todos los sentidos, moderna y atemporal a la vez.

La casa es un gran cubo perforado, donde la luz juega un papel fundamental con un patio interior que ocupa toda la planta baja, y donde las proporciones y formas de los espacios exteriores dan la sensación de estar en el interior gracias a una composición radicalmente vertical.

Así como el diseño aúna ciertas convenciones de los espacios interiores y exteriores, también juega con la oposición de la naturaleza bruta y la formalidad de la arquitectura, utilizándose pigmentos de la tierra en paredes y techos.

Los 600 m2 de construcción sencilla y elegante están en perfecta armonía con el entorno mediterráneo, rodeada de árboles autóctonos y con vistas al mar y las montañas. Uno de los mejores ejemplos de la obra de Pawson, donde importan sobre todas las cosas el orden y la tranquilidad, y en este caso también el diálogo con la tierra de Mallorca.

Neuendorf House ARCHITECTURAL MINIMALISM AMONG ALMOND TREES A pioneer of the European minimalist tendency, the architect John Pawson (Halifax, England, 1949), amazes with his purity of lines and vast knowledge of light. Located in the midst of an almond and olive tree grove in Santanyí, in southeastern Mallorca, the Neuendorf House, designed and constructed in the late eighties for a German art merchant, is considered one of the jewels of 20 th century architectural minimalism.

liminating the superfluous and enhancing clarity, contention, formal purity and reductionism. When designing the Neuendorf House, John Pawson and his colleague Claudio Silvestrin brought out the best of their repertoire to create a residence that was unique in every sense – simultaneously modern and timeless.

The house is a large, perforated cube, where light plays a key role, and an inner courtyard occupies the entire ground floor. The proportions and shapes of the outdoor spaces give one the feeling of being indoors, thanks to a radically vertical composition.

Just as the design brings together certain conventions of indoor and outdoor spaces, it also plays with the opposition of raw nature and the formality of architecture, using pigments from the soil on walls and ceilings.

The 600 m2 of simple, elegant construction achieve perfect harmony with the Mediterranean surroundings, encircled by indigenous trees and with views of the sea and the mountains.

This is one of the very best examples of Pawson’s work, where what matters above all things is order and tranquillity, and in this case the fusion with the land of Mallorca as well.

ARQUEOLOGÍA GASTRONÓMICA “Mi pequeña revolución es la reconexión con el paisaje, la recuperación, búsqueda y puesta en valor del antiguo recetario mallorquín”, confiesa el chef y repostero Tomeu Arbona, quien junto a su mujer María José Orero se dedica a la arqueología gastronómica desde el Fornet de la Soca, en Palma.

“Cuando transmites las cosas con orgullo y seguridad, les estás dando un valor muy importante, y esto a la gente le emociona”.

“P

ara mantener la cocina tradicional de Mallorca hay que redescubrirla y tener una relación importante con los productos locales, que son los reales. Hay que generar una economía circular que fomente el autoconsumo. Así ayudamos al agricultor, conservamos el paisaje y comemos cultura. Los recuerdos gastronómicos nos hablan de la honestidad del producto”, explica Tomeu.

La crisis económica del año 2008 cogió a Tomeu Arbona y a María José Orero trabajabando en el ámbito de la educación, el trabajo social y la psicología. Perdieron su empleo y decidieron fundar el Fornet de la Soca, con la intención de “reinventarnos y crear un concepto nuevo, basado en nuestro conocimiento de la gastronomía autóctona ancestral”.

“Cuando empecé a investigar sobre recetas antiguas, di con la enciclopedia Die Balearen, del Archiduque Lluís Salvador de Austria. El Arxiduc explica muy bien los diferentes platos que se comían por aquel entonces. Sobre todo me llamaban la atención los nombres que se les daban, muchos de ellos perdidos para siempre. Después encontré el libro Cocina Selecta Mallorquina, de Madò Coloma, publicado en los años 60. Fue la primera mujer que escribió un libro de cocina en la isla, ¡y eso que era totalmente analfabeta!... Coloma trabajaba en las casas señoriales de Palma y creó un recetario de la época, añadiendo otras recetas populares. También es interesante el estudio de cocina tradicional de Pere d’Alcántara Penya. Aunque para mí, el definitivo es el de Fra Jaume Martí, un fraile agustino que en el siglo XVII hizo un recetario y una recopilación de recetas conventuales”, cuenta Tomeu.

Para ellos, seguir la tradición es un acto reivindicativo, tanto en la manera de elaborar sus recetas como en el trato al cliente y la belleza de los espacios. Sin apenas maquinaria, toda la elaboración es manual.

“Sabemos que si producimos mucho, nuestra calidad baja. Cuando hemos querido crecer, hemos notado que nuestro producto peligraba.

Así que nos hemos limitado a tener una botiga (pequeña tienda) y a estar muy enfocados en ella”.

Según reconocen, su trabajo en el Fornet de la Soca es empírico: ponen sobre el mostrador creaciones que a la gente les parece imposible hacer. “Pero para nosotros es todo lo contrario. Hoy en día, en las casas mallorquinas difícilmente se cocinan platos tradicionales auténticos, salvo en ocasiones especiales. En las panaderías o forns también encontramos siempre los mismos productos: ensaimadas o empanadas.

Hay poco más dónde elegir, y nosotros hemos querido cambiar esto.

Tomeu Arbona GASTRONOMIC ARCHAEOLOGY “My little revolution involves reconnecting with the landscape, recovering, searching for and highlighting ancient Mallorcan recipes”, explains chef and confectioner Tomeu Arbona who, together with his wife María José Orero, devotes his time to gastronomic archaeology at the Fornet de la Soca bakery in Palma.

“I

f we are to maintain the traditional Mallorcan cuisine we need to rediscover it and establish a significant relationship with local, authentic products. We have to generate a circular economy that promotes self-consumption. In this way, we help farmers, preserve the landscape and our gastronomic culture. Culinary memories show us the pureness of the product”, says Tomeu.

The economic crisis of 2008 caught Tomeu Arbona and María José Orero working in the area of education, social work and psychology. They lost their jobs and decided to establish Fornet de la Soca, with the aim of “reinventing ourselves and creating a new concept, based on our knowledge of ancestral local gastronomy”.

Alcantara Penya. For me, the ultimate source is Fra Jaume Martí, an Augustinian friar who made a cookbook and a compilation of recipes created in convents in the 17th century”, Tomeu recounts.

For this couple, following tradition is an act of protest, both in the way they prepare their recipes as well as in the service they provide for their customers and the beauty of the spaces. With hardly any machinery, the entire production process is manual. “We know that if we produce large quantities, our quality suffers.

When we tried to grow, we realised that our product was at risk so we have restricted ourselves to having a botiga (small shop) and staying very focussed on it”.

They acknowledge that their work at the Fornet de la Soca is empirical: on the counter, they set out creations that people think it is impossible to make. “But for us it’s quite the contrary. Nowadays, authentic traditional dishes are hardly ever cooked in Mallorcan homes, except on special occasions. In the bakeries or forns we always find the same products: ensaimadas or empanadas. There isn’t much more to choose from, and we wanted to change this. When you transmit things with pride and confidence, you add an important value to them, and people get excited about that”, say these revolutionaries of the most authentic Mallorcan cuisine.

“When I started researching ancient recipes, I came across the encyclopaedia Die Balearen, by Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria. The Archduke explains the different dishes people used to eat back then very well. I was particularly struck by the names they used for them, many of which have been lost forever. Later on I found the Cocina Selecta Mallorquina, by Madò Coloma, published in the 1960s. Coloma was the first woman to write a cookery book on the island – even though she was completely illiterate!... She worked in the stately homes of Palma and created a cookbook of the era, adding in other popular recipes. It’s also interesting to study the traditional cuisine of Pedro

“EL ARTE JUSTIFICA MI PASO POR LA VIDA” La última serie de Albert Pinya (Palma, 1985) se titula Sonrisas para combatir la tristeza, y en estos días está alcanzando una gran repercusión en su gira por Taiwán y Corea del Sur. Con una estética parecida al emoticono, e influenciado por los personajes de los videojuegos Mario Bros., además de por series asiáticas como Dragon Ball o Arale, el artista intenta “construir un mundo paralelo y un micro universo alternativo”.

na adolescencia un tanto rebelde y las malas notas en el colegio llevaron a los preocupados padres de Albert Pinya a internarlo en un colegio de Valencia, para ver si así sentaba un poco la cabeza.

Y lo consiguieron.

“Nada más salir de la isla supe que mi camino era el arte. Alejado de mi familia y sin muchas libertades de las que disfrutar en aquel internado, empecé a reflexionar sobre cuestiones vitales. Siempre he pensado que lo difícil es saber qué queremos, y en este caso yo tuve muy claro qué camino quería tomar”.

heredado esta actitud de mi padre. Él trabajó hasta los 85 años sin jubilarse, y su manera de vivir fue un gran ejemplo para mí, sobre todo por los valores que me transmitió.

Nunca lo veías fuera de lugar, y siempre sonreía”.

En sus obras Albert refleja “la poesía de la experiencia, no tan autobiográfica, pero sí vinculada al movimiento. El dinamismo continuo es una de las señas de identidad de mi discurso y de mi obra, que va hacia el territorio de lo desconocido. Me gusta más la exaltación del cromatismo que el dibujo en sí, y lo que verdaderamente me estimula es el proceso durante la ejecución del trabajo. La contemplación no me pertenece porque, para que la pieza esté completa, tiene que estar en contacto con el público y su mirada”, explica.

Se volcó con la pintura y los lienzos, y con algo más de veinte años se marchó a vivir a Berlín. “Para mi formación era necesaria una mirada más internacional. Allí me impactó mucho descubrir la obra de Jonathan Meese, porque era salvaje e irreverente”.

Para Albert, acomodarse es peligroso, “hay que viajar para empaparse de muchos estímulos. Si me viese toda la vida viviendo aquí en Mallorca moriría metafóricamente: siempre hay que ir más allá de lo que se conoce. Todo lo vivido es la esencia de lo que has hecho y lo que eres”.

Su actividad le permite a Albert construir un lenguaje y un universo que le ayudan a adentrarse en su mundo interior, en el que se abstrae y que sólo a él le pertenece.

“Intento crear un mundo paralelo y un micro universo alternativo que contribuya al progreso de la humanidad, a la vez que hago crecer una estructura, una forma de vivir y una mirada. Me gusta la transversalidad, hacer un cartel o la cubierta para un disco, me gusta la capacidad transformadora del arte a nivel social. El arte justifica mi paso por la vida. He venido aquí a intentar ser uno de los mejores artistas de mi generación y eso es lo que le da sentido a mi existencia”.

El taller de Albert Pinya en Palma tiene forma de cubo blanco. Sin interferencias ni contaminación visual, su única zona de confort es su balancín. Y su único entretenimiento durante más de 15 horas al día, una radio. “He 90

Albert Pinya “ART JUSTIFIES MY PASSAGE THROUGH LIFE” The latest series by Albert Pinya (Palma, 1985) is entitled Sonrisas para combatir la tristeza (Smiles to Combat Sadness), and is making a huge impact these days, on its tour around Taiwan and South Korea. With aesthetics similar to emojis, and influenced by characters from the videogames Mario Bros., as well as Asian series like Dragon Ball or Arale, the artist tries “to construct a parallel world and an alternative micro universe”.

rather rebellious adolescence and poor grades at school led Albert Pinya’s concerned parents to send him to boarding school in Valencia, to see if that would help him settle down.

And they were successful.

“The minute I left the island I knew that art was my path. Away from my family and unable to enjoy many freedoms in that boarding school, I started to reflect on vital issues. I have always thought that the most difficult thing is knowing what we want, and in this case I was very clear about the direction I wanted to take”.

“I inherited this attitude from my father. He worked to the age of 85 without retiring, and the way he lived was a shining example for me, above all for the values he transmitted to me. He was never out of place, and he always smiled”.

In his works Albert reflects “the poetry of experience, not so much autobiographically, but linked to movement. Continuous dynamics are one of the hallmarks of my discourse and my work, which moves towards the territory of the unknown. I prefer the exaltation of the use of colour to drawing itself, and what really stimulates me is the process as the work is being produced.

Contemplation does not belong to me, because for the piece to be complete, it has to be in contact with the public and their gaze”, he explains.

He devoted himself to painting and canvases, and at the age of just over twenty he went to live in Berlin. “I needed a more international gaze as part of my training.

While I was there, discovering the work of Jonathan Meese really made an impression on me, because it was wild and irreverent”.

In Albert’s opinion, getting too comfortable is dangerous. “You have to travel to soak up numerous stimuli. If I imagined myself living here in Mallorca my whole life, I would die, metaphorically speaking: you always have to go beyond what you know. Everything you have experienced is the essence of what you have done and what you are”.

His activity enables Albert to construct a language and a universe that help him penetrate his inner world, where he becomes detached, but which belongs to him alone. “I am trying to create a parallel world and an alternative micro universe that contributes to the progress of humanity, at the same time as I grow a structure, a way of life and a gaze. I love transversality, making a poster or a record sleeve. I love the transformative capacity of art on a social level. Art justifies my passage through life. I came here to try and be one of the best artists of my generation and that is what lends meaning to my existence”.

Albert Pinya’s atelier in Palma is white and shaped like a cube. Free from interference or visual contamination, the only comfort zone he has is his rocker, and his only entertainment for over 15 hours a day is a radio.

hojaldre cubierta con láminas de manzana tan finas que se funden en el paladar. Su textura crujiente y melosa, junto con un equilibrio de dulzor y acidez, acentuada con toques de mantequilla y vainilla, la convierten en una verdadera delicia para el paladar.

El propio restaurante se traslada al lugar del evento, pues Flanigan Catering sigue cocinando todos los platos justo antes de servir, como debe ser.

Flor de Sal d’Es Trenc ha vuelto a ser premiada como la mejor sal del mundo. Catalogada como uno de los productos tradicionales de Baleares, su origen es 100% natural, ya que la materia prima es el agua del mar. Pini Ponce, from Argentina, came to Mallorca with her family in 2020. Abiertos a nuevas experiencias Ser un puerto abierto implica contar con un calendario de eventos que tiene en cuenta a todos nuestros públicos, ofreciéndoles nuevas experiencias en las diferentes estaciones del año. Nos mueve crear momentos memorables: que generan recuerdos, que trascienden de generación en generación y que nacen diseñados para compartir. Por eso, seleccionamos con cuidado los eventos que celebramos y trabajamos en equipo para posicionarnos en el tiempo. Todos nuestros eventos colaboran con asociaciones benéficas locales, como en el caso de Sankt Martin, un evento familiar de tradición europea cuya recaudación íntegra va destinada a la Fundación Rana.

Desde hace más de 10 años, Puerto Portals se ha convertido en un referente en mercados de calidad en la isla. La primavera arranca con el Farmers’ Market, una propuesta Km 0 que fomenta el comercio y la artesanía local. Durante el verano, The Sunset Market llena de color, frescura y música el puerto, invitando a todos sus visitantes a disfrutar de un atardecer de verano paseando junto al mar. Y con la llegada de la Navidad, el puerto se viste de luces en su tradicional Christmas Market. Con una programación llena de magia, este evento se ha posicionado como uno de los mejores mercados navideños de Europa.

Desde Puerto Portals revivimos la nostalgia de otras épocas con eventos diseñados para compartirlos con las generaciones de ayer y de hoy. Noches como la de “Peace & Love Party”, al ritmo de la música de los 60, 70 y 80, o la fiesta “Cats Revival”, que rememora la época dorada de la discoteca Cats de Puerto Portals, nos hacen viajar juntos en el tiempo.

A estas acciones ya consolidadas se suman esta temporada nuevos eventos que dan eco al movimiento Blue Marina en Puerto Portals. “Blue Marina Day” y “Blue Marina Clean Up”, formatos abiertos a todos los públicos y que tienen el objetivo de transformar la manera en que las personas se relacionan con el entorno, convirtiendo Puerto Portals en un motor de cambio responsable y comprometido con el medio ambiente.

En un puerto deportivo de primer nivel los eventos náuticos no pueden faltar. A lo largo del año se celebran diferentes pruebas deportivas como la Dragon Winter Series, la Copa del Mediterráneo o la Travesía APD. Una de las grandes citas internacionales es la regata Puerto Portals 52 Super Series Sailing Week, el mejor circuito de barcos monocascos que este año define a su vencedor en aguas de Puerto Portals.

Otro evento deportivo que lleva más de diez años celebrándose en el puerto es el “Rally Clásico Isla Mallorca”, que nos permite disfrutar en vivo de más de un centenar de joyas clásicas del motor llegadas de diferentes puntos de Europa.

Open to new experiences Part of being an open port is having an events calendar that takes all our users into account, offering them new experiences at different times of year. We are passionate about creating unforgettable moments - moments that generate memories, which are passed down through the generations and which are meant to be shared. This is why we select the events we hold with the utmost care and work as a team to position them in time. All our events are held in collaboration with local charitable associations, as in the case of Sankt Martin, a family event with a European tradition in which all the funds raised are donated to the Fundación Rana.

For more than 10 years Puerto Portals has been an island leader in top-quality markets. Spring kicks off with the Farmers’ Market, a “Km 0” proposal that promotes local crafts and business. Over the summer, The Sunset Market fills the port with colour, novelty and music, inviting all its visitors to enjoy a summer evening strolling beside the sea. When Christmas comes, the port is decked out with lights for the traditional Christmas Market. With a truly magical programme, this event has positioned itself as one of the best Christmas markets in Europe.

At Puerto Portals we relive the nostalgia of bygone eras with events designed to be shared with the generations of yesterday and today. Nights like the “Peace & Love Party”, to the rhythm of the music of the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s, or the “Cats Revival” party, which recalls the golden age of Puerto Portals’ Cats discotheque, transport us through time together.

This season, in addition to these well-established events, we have some new ones which reflect the Blue Marina movement in Puerto Portals. “Blue Marina Day” and “Blue Marina Clean Up”, are events that are open to the public and that aim to transform the way people relate to the environment, turning Puerto Portals into a force for change that is both responsible and committed to the environment.

Nautical events cannot be absent from a first-rate marina like Puerto Portals.

Different sports competitions are held over the year, like the Dragon Winter Series, the Mediterranean Cup or the Travesía APD. One of the big international events hosted is the Puerto Portals 52 Super Series Sailing Week regatta, the best monohulls circuit, the winner of which will be determined in the waters of Puerto Portals this year.
