Earth Day in The Burg
When you think of Earth Day, you might think about picking up garbage, planting trees, or recycling the collection of aluminum cans your grandparents gather for months. It may seem like your contribution to celebrate this day is so small that it won’t matter, but your impact is much bigger than you think!
If you’re looking for a way to celebrate Earth Day this year, SLICE is partnering with state and local agencies to coordinate the Spring Day of Service, a long-standing tradition in Ellensburg previously known as the Yakima River Cleanup.
Spring Day of Service: April 22
Dress in your favorite work wear and closed toed shoes, it can get dirty.
Volunteers will be assigned to one of nine different locations throughout Kittitas County to gather litter, restore trails, and clean up campsites and community parks. This is the perfect way to work side by side with other Wildcats to upkeep the charm of our beautiful, close-knit community.
Volunteers will receive a free t-shirt and transportation to locations of service. After a day full of fun and hard work, volunteers will head back to campus for a free lunch at 1 p.m.
Itinerary
• Check in at the SURC East Patio
• Depart to volunteer sites
• Work with other Wildcats
• Arrive back to campus for lunch
Sign up to make a difference
As Wildcats, we all get to experience the beauty of Ellensburg and the Kittitas Valley: the mountains, valleys, and rivers. You don’t have to be Greta Thunberg or The Lorax to make a difference!
Register by April 16 to ensure a t-shirt, transportation and lunch!
Joy, gratitude, nature...
three things CWU Libraries hopes to help CWU students reconnect with. What better way to do that than through creative writing?
CWU Libraries is partnering with campus departments and community organizations to bring the NEA Big Read and author Ross Gay to Ellensburg this spring. A series of events from April 22 to May 13 will celebrate his book of poems, “Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude.”
And thank you, friends, when last spring
The hyacinth bells rang
About Ross Gay
And the crocuses flaunted ”
When I took my first poetry writing class at CWU, I was assigned to read Ross Gay’s ode to sleeping in my clothes. His work inspired me to create one of the first poems I wrote at CWU. Reading the struggle within ode to sleeping in my clothes made me feel seen and heard.
Ross writes with a vulnerability that slices you open when you read his work. His collection “Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude” is a prime example of that.
“Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude” manages to bring joy to every aspect of life. Through this collection, Ross shows us how to see the good in adverse situations and show gratitude. This collection of poetry reads like a song, a rhythmic story to bring you out of a funk. It’s best read in a frenzy, devouring each poem line by line until your eyes hit the back cover. Then read it again. Slowly. There’s something to learn with every word.
About the NEA Big Read
The National Endowment for the Arts Big Read is designed to broaden our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. CWU Libraries is one of 70+ nonprofit organizations to receive a grant to host an NEA Big Read project.

Copies of “Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude will be given away at specific NEA Big Read events.

The Ellensburg wind won’t be the only thing blowing you away this spring. Family Weekend is one of the biggest events during Spring Quarter at Central! This is a weekend full of fun where you can invite your family and friends to create unforgettable memories on campus and in the community.
From art, theater, and cultural performances to a variety of social activities, entertainment and tours, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Check out a few highlights below. For more information, please visit the Family Weekend web page by scanning the QR Code below. See you there, Wildcats!
The weekend starts with check-in from 3 - 7 p.m. where you can pick up a welcome packet, gather information and secure tickets for select events.
After checking in, stop by the East Patio and play lawn games! If you're feeling like you need some shade from the spring sun, step indoors to play board games in SURC 137. Afterwards, head over to The Burg’s Studio Tour to see how they operate their award-winning radio station.
Don’t miss Barrio Fiesta sa Bayan, a celebration of Filipino culture with dance performances, activities and information booths, hosted on Barto Lawn and the Wellington Event Center.
In between events on campus, drive out to grab a bite at one of the many delicious local restaurants that Ellensburg has to offer, then head back to campus for a planetarium show, paint party and this year’s headliner event.
Filosophy will take the stage in a fun acapella performance. You may recognize some of these members of The Filharmonic, who were on NBC’s The Sing Off and a Late Late Show 80’s riff off with Lizzo!
On Saturday morning, swing by the Ellensburg Farmers located on 4th Avenue downtown!
Take a walk and discover all the locally grown food and homemade goods. Or, take a tour of historic Ellensburg and the CWU campus.
If you’re into something more adventurous, get tickets to float the Yakima River or grab a free Recreation Center Fitness Pass to gain access to the entire Recreation Center! Pick up a friendly game of basketball or explore the rock-climbing wall.
Moving into Saturday evening, you can find African Night in the SURC Ballroom, where you will get to experience African culture, food, dances, and everything in between. Right after that, you can stop by and see the Hot New Jam performing improv in the SURC Theatre.
Make sure to catch a performance of Central Theatre Ensemble's “Into the Woods.” The Brothers Grimm hit the stage with an epic fairytale about wishes, family and the choices we make. Performances are Friday and Saturday evening, plus afternoon times Saturday and Sunday.
With the weekend coming to a close we welcome you to a Mother’s Day Brunch in the Holmes Dining Room. This is a great chance to enjoy a delicious breakfast with your family as you recap the amazing time you had at Family Weekend.
Visit the Family Weekend page for the full schedule, all the details and ticket links!
STUDENT APPRECIATION DAYS
Student life in the spring is buzzing. The sunshine, spring air, warm nights, and the undeniable feeling of gratitude for the college journey fill our lives. With many events being planned during the month of May, our greatest wish is for Wildcats to feel appreciated.
The lineup of gratitude goes as follows: Sweecy Day, Student Appreciation Day, and Wild Fest! While some specifics are still being built and put together, we encourage you to save these dates and plan to participate in events that will surely become highlights of your time at Central.
SWEECY DAY
MAY 19
Flipping through CWU’s archives, Student Senators and ASCWU are bringing life back to a long lost CWU tradition. Activities include a glamorous campus cleanup, a tree planting ceremony, and special guest speakers followed by entertainment!
Participants in the cleanup will receive a t-shirt and refreshments, so gather ‘round and sign up for the revival of Sweecy Day! Wondering who Sweecy is? Well, it is actually not a single person, rather, the phonetic sound derived from CWCE, Central Washington College of Education, now known and evolved into CWU, Central Washington University.
STUDENT APPRECIATION DAY
MAY 25
A week after Sweecy Day, we arrive at a well-known and loved tradition which is Student Appreciation Day. The spring air is full of delicious aromas from the food provided by Dining Services, inflatables decorate Barto Lawn, and activity and games fill Chestnut Mall. Campus will be buzzing with energy!
Swing by for some free food, fun and good tunes brought to you by 88.1 The Burg DJs. Get access to this special event by visiting the Campus Activities tent where you can get your wrist bands, sign risk waivers for the inflatables and lather yourself in sunscreen to keep you safe from the spring sun!
WILD FEST CONCERT
JUNE 1
In efforts to perfectly round up the gratitude event series, KCWU 88.1 The ‘Burg has lined up a free concert! You asked, we heard. Prepare for an awesome evening curated only for CWU students. Stay in touch as we await the official headliner announcement, Wildcats! It is sure to be a great show you will not want to miss.
We hope you jot these events down and make plans to attend. And as always, the best way to stay in the know is by following our Instagram @cwuhype.
Story by Madi McAuliffe Design by Evan BrownCatch them all! Traditions are a large part of what makes Central, Central! Recent years have been rough for traditions, but they’re coming back even stronger with the brand-new CWU Traditions Keeper App. It works not unlike a Pokédex, and is the best way to track what events you’ve attended, and which ones you have yet to attend.
Those who complete enough traditions will receive a medallion to wear at graduation! Show off how involved you were during your time at Central and start tracking your traditions today.
There are four tiers to complete and badges to earn. The first tier is completed by participating in at least 18 of the 91 total CWU traditions. Doing so will earn you a bronze lapel pin. The next level requires 36 and earns you a silver pin. 54 must be completed to take home the gold, and the Graduation Medallion can only be earned after completing 72 or more!
Don’t fret- it may seem like an arduous task but with traditions like “Declare your Major” and “Support a Local Business” you might find that you have already completed many. The app contains a complete list of all official traditions to help you decide which events or traditions you would like to complete.
There’s also a campus map and a social feed to keep up with what events clubs around campus are posting about. With the introduction of the app, students once again have the tools to remind them that the college experience can be found in many places.
Check out the back pages for even more ideas of events to attend and memories to make as you step toward your future as Wildcat Alumni.
Catch those traditions, Wildcats! We look forward to seeing a Traditions Keeper Medallion decorate your wardrobe on graduation day.
