Make unforgettable memories in the great Central WA outdoors

Whether you grew up in Central Washington or are discovering this part of the state for the first time, you will soon discover how much recreation is in your backyard. This spring, challenge yourself to explore the region – grab a bike, a stand-up paddleboard, a yoga mat or a rafting paddle to gear up for outdoor adventures.

Adventure is an Excursion Away Find the beauty in nature close to home or travel to the top of the region’s most stunning mountains with an outdoor excursion hosted by Recreation’s Outdoor Pursuits and Rentals (OPR). Each week during the Spring Quarter, you are invited to register for multiple unique excursions. Carve your way through forested trails when you take the shuttle to Duthie Hill Mountain Bike Park near Sammamish, WA. If mountain biking is not in your wheelhouse, breathe in nature through a yoga hike or an overnight backpacking trip to the beautiful Ancient Lakes.

Build Your Adventure Community on Campus If you want to stay closer to home and want to connect with like-minded Wildcats, OPR has plenty to offer. From weekly fireside chats and s’mores to bicycle maintenance clinics and a Wilderness First Responder course, you are sure to find your community on campus.

Gear Up and Get Outside If you have your own excursion in mind, stop by Outdoor Pursuits and Rentals before you go. OPR offers discounted rental items like tents, sleeping bags, propane stoves, climbing gear -- and even games like bocce ball and horseshoes! The knowledgeable team at OPR also provides regional maps, excursion tips, and more. Don’t spend your Spring Quarter locked inside behind a screen – get out and explore!

Experience the colorful sunsets of the region from your standup paddleboard, or from the top of a ridge after an adrenaline-boosting hike.

Gear up to float the Yakima River!

“ THIS IS MY FIRST EXPERIENCE IN A REAL OPERA ” -ELIDA WADSWORTH Story by Emma CrowE, Class of 2023 | Design by Evan Brown, Class of 2023

Opera at CWU

Orpheus at CWU

Did you know CWU has an Opera Ensemble? Students studying vocal performance can focus on the strenuous genre that is opera. The music department shows an opera production every other year to help students develop their skills, get more practice, and explore their artistic expression.

The CWU Opera Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, Theatre Department, and Dance Program partnered to bring Anthony T. Buck's 2020 English adaptation of “Orpheus in the Underworld” to CWU students. An opera of this size has not premiered at CWU since 2018.

Orpheus in the Underworld This year’s operetta is “Orpheus in the Underworld,” written in 1858 by French composer Jacques Offenbach. Audiences of Orpheus in the Underworld were shocked by the changes Offenbach made to the original myth.

Students auditioned and roles were announced at the beginning of Winter 2022. Elida Wadsworth, senior at CWU, says they already started rehearsals for the show. Elida is one of two students playing Diana, goddess of the hunt, in the Spring production. The show is double cast, which means there are two different groups of students involved in the show.

Orpheus is a character from Greek and Roman mythology. When his wife dies and is taken to the underworld, Orpheus does everything he can to retrieve her. However, in Offenbach’s satirical version of the story, Orpheus and his wife Eurydice are living apart.

Elida says one thing that will draw in audience members is that Orpheus in the Underworld is, “a classic story with a different take.” You may know the original story of Orpheus, but do you know this version?

When Eurydice goes to the underworld, Orpheus does not want to go after her. It is only after Public Opinion pressures him that Orpheus attempts to bring his wife back to the land of the living. The gods and goddesses of myth live in splendor but are drawn to the drama. Their involvement only serves to complicate matters.

This April 7 - 10, head down to McConnell Auditorium to witness the talent of CWU students. Get your tickets at cwu.edu/tickets today!

SPREAD POSITIVITY & CELEBRATE PRIDE ON CAMPUS Story by Emma CrowE, Class of 2023 Design by Victoria Urrutia, Class of 2022

Pride Month takes place during the month of June and acts as a positive space to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. It was created on the heels of the Stonewall riots in June of 1969, a pivotal moment in the LGBTQ+ movement. Since then, the LGBTQ+ community has made major strides in terms of rights and societal freedoms.

PRIDE AT CWU At Central, Equality Through Queers and Allies club (EQuAl) takes on most of the planning for Pride Week events held during the first week of June. They are supported by the Diversity and Equity Center, the Equity and Services Council, and other campus partners. Pride Week at CWU is a meaningful time filled with inclusivity, diversity, and a sense of community. Details for Pride Week 2022 events are not completely set in stone; however, Hype has the inside scoop on what events are being planned. This year’s theme is United in Pride.

DRAG SHOWS AND PRIDE PARADES Lavender Graduation is a tradition CWU has upheld for several years. It is a graduation celebration for LGBTQ+ identifying graduates put on by the ESC. It’s an opportunity for CWU to acknowledge your accomplishments as a CWU graduate and a member of the LGBTQ+ community. This year, Lavender Grad takes place on June 2 during the evening. Every year, EQuAl hosts an amateur drag showcase where students compete for the chance to perform in the professional drag showcase. Sign up to compete in the Wildcat Drag Show taking place on June 3. The Professional Drag Show is on June 3 in the evening. June 4 brings with it the last Pride Week event, a Pride Parade! Show up and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community with a parade around campus. Whether you identify as LGBTQ+ or an ally, enjoy Pride Week 2022 with CWU!
