CIGMAN FRAUD | SEPTEMBER 30 Join CWU’s own Cigman Fraud! This student lead band has rocked at Student Appreciation and is now showcasing their talents as the first performance in our Fall Concert Series. Stop by the SURC Pit to hear them rock!

PHILIP-MICHAEL SCALES | OCTOBER 7 With sultry, soulful vocals and catchy melodies from his acoustic guitar, Phillip-Michael Scales brings us all the coffeehouse vibes. PhillipMichael, nephew of blues legend BB King, plays a variety of originals and covers by artists like John Mayer, Jack White, Sam Smith, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and more. Get to know Phillip-Michael as a musician and an individual through his podcast On the Company You Keep, where he dives deep with folks who have inspired him in the hopes that their stories inspire you.

SUNGBEATS | OCTOBER 28 We’ve all done a bit of casual beatboxing, typically sticking to the basic “boots’n cats’n boots’n cats’n” model. Experience beatboxing like you’ve never witnessed with competitioncrushing SungBeats back by popular demand! A microphone in one hand and a loop pedal beneath one foot, SungBeats uses only his mouth to create unique beats and high-energy song covers. He won the 2014 Grand Finale of “Amateur Night at the Apollo,” and snagged the 1st place title at the nation’s premier Asian American talent competition “Kollaboration Star 2014”. He even represented the United States at the 2015 Grand Beatbox Battle in Switzerland!

ANGIE K. | NOVEMBER 4 “There is something so undisciplined about the way you perform…you are wild.” These were the words of country superstar and "The Voice" judge Blake Shelton as he witnessed Angie’s audition on the show (and quickly snagged her for his team). Angie Keilhauer began her music journey at dive bars and on cruise ships, but her career took a leap after her time on NBC’s "The Voice." She invested in her first full band album (Wild, June 2016), which soon hit #5 on the iTunes charts. El Salvador born and Georgia raised, Angie is currently shaking up Nashville with her fresh blend of modern and Latin country. You can find her new single “Sunsets” on Spotify’s “New Music Nashville” playlist, or catch the upbeat “Happily Ever After” duet with Moana’s Jordan Fisher which is played during the nightly fireworks show at Disneyland!

Story by DEC and Hype Design by Dang Hoang, Class of 2022 Honor your loved ones while celebrating Latinx heritage at CWU during Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Each year, the Diversity and Equity Center fills the SURC with art, music and authentic cuisine to pay homage to those we’ve lost. This year’s celebrations will go beyond the SURC and into the community through a partnership with Ellensburg’s downtown Gallery One Visual Arts Center.

Día de los Muertos Downtown The first Friday of every month is First Friday Art Walk in Downtown Ellensburg. On November 5, the Diversity and Equity Center will commemorate Día de los Muertos and bring Latinx art to the heart of downtown. Gallery One will feature an original sand tapestry by renowned Oaxacan artist Fulgencio Lazo, and encourages guests to bring photos and mementos of their deceased loved ones to place on the nearby ofrenda (altar).

Heritage and Homage at CWU On November 6, head to the SURC for CWU’s Día de los Muertos festivities. Experience authentic music and dance performed by CWU’s student organizations. Student groups M.E.Ch.A. (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicanx de Aztlan) and the Latinx Student Organization will provide face painting, crafts and more for families during the event. Join the Latinx community at this important event and honor your own loved ones.

A Celebration of Love, Not a Spin on Halloween It is important to remember that Día de los Muertos is not a version of Halloween. Día de los Muertos is a day of connection, remembrance and love – for, and with, those who have passed.

PRESIDENT

Story by Hype | Design by Sammie Flippin, Class of 2022

Compassionate. Engaged. Focused. These three words describe Associated Students of Central Washington University (ASCWU) President Madeline Koval. A Biology major and wellness advocate, Koval is ready to tackle the big issues on campus after a very nontraditional year. Bringing Mental Health Resources Forward While Koval is excited to be moving forward with inperson classes, work and events, she acknowledges that students will be healing and growing after the past year. "We must be active in pursuing holistic health for our students," stated Koval. "We must provide and advertise mental health, physical health, financial and legal support, as well as safe social activities."

Koval looks forward to promoting the new location of the CWU Food Pantry, and plans to partner with the Wellness Center on opportunities to relax and unwind. Koval and the entire ASCWU team encourages students to visit their offices on the second floor of the SURC to hang out and unwind. “We have all this space and we want to share it,” said Koval. “The key to ASCWU’s success is student engagement and involvement. So please, do not hesitate to reach out!” Get Involved with ASCWU "We have some great opportunities for students to get involved within our office, such as Student Senate, various office positions and volunteer opportunities," said Koval. Visit cwu.edu/ascwu to engage with ASCWU today!
