PARADE OF NATIONS BRINGS CULTURES TOGETHER Story by Star Diavolikis, Class of 2022 • Design by Victoria Urrutia, Class of 2022

When you go to college, you experience so many new things: new friends, new foods, and for many a brand new town -- for some, it feels like you're finally getting the "college experience" you witnessed in movies. Though new experiences are great, there can be a disconnect from your culture and your traditions when you move away from where your culture thrives. This could be moving away from your reservation, cultural community, neighborhood you grew up in, or anything in between.

Discovering a Sense of Belonging I live on the Yakama reservation and am a direct descendant of the tribe. I’m enrolled in the Umatilla tribe as well, so I have ties to places everywhere but Ellensburg. Here, there is little representation of any tribes - I haven’t felt this out of touch in a long time. I have struggled to find an Indigenous community off of the reservation, but a visit at CWU’s Diversity and Equity Center (DEC) helped me discover a connection opportunity - the Parade of Nations.

6

Claiming the Spotlight The Parade of Nations is an annual event that makes space for students to share their culture and identity on a big stage. This year's theme is “Watch Us Rise,” a nod to Maya Angelou’s “Still I Rise.” According to student programmer Jaeda Nelson, the event is an opportunity for disregarded and discounted student groups to take a stand and demand their rightful place on campus. The event is not just a performance - it is a celebratory event to empower students. Students' cultures are presented authentically and traditionally through a clothing/regalia show, traditional dance, spoken word, and more. I will even be taking the stage to represent the Yakama Nation. Find your community so you don’t feel so alone, and keep your culture alive with Parade of Nations!

Knit Communities Together With Student Government Run a committee on campus, plan exciting events for students, advocate for marginalized communities – these are just a few of the things you could do through ASCWU Student Government. You don’t need previous experience to get involved with ASCWU. All you need is a love for CWU. Discover the different elected positions you could run for:

8

ASCWU President The position of president is perfect for students who want to create change on campus. The ASCWU President is in charge of keeping key entities on campus informed about decisions and discussions, including the CWU President. Current ASCWU President Madeline Koval says the coolest thing she’s done in her term is being on the Vision, Mission, and Strategic Planning Task Force. The task force was created to, “change the culture here at CWU and bring people together.”

Executive Vice President Lead the recruitment efforts for student representatives for 30+ committees, supervise the office staff, and manage accounting for the ASCWU budget. Chair the Services & Activities Fees Committee and be a part of decisions about how student fees are spent. Geoffrey Odoch, the current ASCWU Executive Vice President, says the coolest thing he and his team have accomplished is creating awareness about the different committees on campus.

Director of Equity and Multicultural Affairs Advocate for marginalized students on campus and support the many communities in the Ellensburg area. If you are passionate about diversity on campus, this may be the position for you. This position chairs the Equity and Services Council. Current Director Mariah Minjarez has been working hard to build up membership and awareness of the ESC organizations, and supporting their events and outreach efforts.

Director of Student Life and Facilities If you love campus events, this may be the position for you. They organize some of your favorite CWU events, manage the social schedule of Wellington the Wildcat, and chair advisory boards for the Recreation Center, Student Union, Dining Services, and the Wildcat Shop. The current Director, Alejandra Cruz-Martinez, says, “During Fall Quarter, the coolest thing I did was spearhead Wellington’s Wildfire during Homecoming week. We had a record-breaking 500 students in attendance! It feels very good to bring back events that truly embody the student life experience.”

Director of Governmental Affairs For those with a passion for political affairs or government, this is a great position. As the liaison between ASCWU Student Government and the state legislature in Olympia, they address issues regarding higher education that affect students. In the past, they’ve helped establish the Washington College Grant, an undocumented student loan program, and more. Edgar Espino, the current Director of Governmental Affairs at ASCWU, says he enjoys getting students registered to vote. He helps educate students about the importance of voting and ensures their voices are represented.

Senate Speaker If you are passionate about academics and equity, the Senate Speaker position may be for you. The Senate Speaker is the liaison between the Student Senate and the ASCWU Board of Directors and are a voting member on the ASCWU BOD. Rachael Medalia, current ASCWU Senate Speaker, says she has enjoyed planning activities for the Student Senators to prepare them for their term.

Story by Star Diavolikis, Class of 2022 • Design by Victoria Urrutia, Class of 2022

This time of year, we all just want to go into our rooms, wrap up in blankets and binge watch TV. However, sources such as Cleveland Clinic suggest that being social during the winter months can combat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and should be prioritized. What better way to be social than by joining clubs and organizations? Here are four great reasons: 1. Meet People with Similar Interests Clubs are based on similar interests. Whether based on fun things such as hobbies or more technical interests like STEM work, connections are made with like-minded Wildcats. For example, the Anime Club and the Cosplay Club focus on specific topics and meet to participate in relevant activities or bonding activities, such as wig-making or anime-based icebreakers. There are also clubs centered around academic majors like biophysics, law and justice and more. With over 150 clubs available at CWU, there will be at least one, if not more, for you and your interests.

12

2. Make Connections with the Community Whether at CWU, Ellensburg or a broader community, you will make lasting connections when you join a club or organization. Some revolve around a person’s culture, which could create a more personal sense of connection with you and who you are. There are the Black Student Union (BSU) and the Filipino American Student Association (FASA) groups, for example. There are also faith-based clubs for many followings, and so many more. 3. Heal from “COVID-19 Isolation” The pandemic created something I call “COVID-19 isolation,” where you were deprived of social events and struggled communicating face-to-face. The shift from this isolation to CWU suddenly buzzing with in-person classes, events and so on can be jarring. After months of being away, joining a club is a great way to ease into a smaller social circle and heal from the COVID-19 isolation. 4. Gain Resources, Connections and Opportunities for Growth With any group, there will be people with different majors, societal backgrounds and more. These people can provide resources and connections for you to succeed, whether related to the club or not. Clubs provide an outlet for you to reach out and make connections! Depending on what club you join, you can focus on growing both your resume and personal skill sets. So, find what clubs are out there that fit your interests. Check out the upcoming Student Involvement Fair on Jan. 18. You can also find clubs on cwu.presence.io, or find their social media and contact them through there!

COZINESS RATING 1-5 5 - sitting next to a roaring fire 1 - stuck in a snowstorm

It’s winter quarter at Central Washington University, and the cold weather may get you craving a hot drink.

HERE ARE HYPE’S TOP 5 COZY DRINKS: HOT CHOCOLATE There’s nothing better than a warm cup of hot chocolate on a winter’s day. Well … maybe a hot chocolate with some added flavor. When you’re craving a cup of chocolate goodness, consider adding white chocolate, peppermint, or both. The additional flavors give the hot chocolate an extra kick.

14

COFFEE

CHAI TEA

Coffee is not a new concept for sleepdeprived college students. Take a walk through campus and you’ll see plenty of students clutching their morning cup of joe like a lifeline. This quarter, try a new flavor to spice up your coffee game. Cat Trax East recommends a hot mocha with Irish cream and caramel.

Chai tea alone is delicious, but college students need more of a caffeine kick. Add a shot of espresso for a “Dirty Chai” latte. You can also play around with the flavors and add in syrups like toasted marshmallow or brown sugar cinnamon.

CIDER Apple cider is almost as iconic as hot chocolate. You may be thinking, “There’s no way you can change apple cider,” but you’d be surprised. Get yourself some apple cider with caramel for a special winter treat.

TEA Tea may sound boring, but you can dress it up in so many ways. A favorite flavor combination of CWU students is passion fruit and peach. Grab a hot cup of tea to warm your hands on the way to class.

All the CWU Dining cafés around campus share the same menu, so you can try any of these drinks at: • The Bistro • Jimmy B’s • Cat Trax East • Cat Trax West • 1891 Café and Market Dairy-free alternatives available: soy, almond, and oat milk. Sugar-free flavors: vanilla, strawberry, and raspberry.
