Pilgrimage to Mount Kurama
Wayne Noakes’ trip to the revered site
Pilgrimage to Mount Kurama
Dear Members,
Welcome to the serene winter edition of our Reiki World magazine!
As the year winds down and the chill of winter sets in, it’s a season for reflection, rest, and renewal. Winter invites us to turn inward, embrace stillness, and nurture our inner light. In this edition, we bring you a collection of articles to support your Reiki practice during this time of quiet introspection and wisdom.
One of the highlights of this issue is the writeup reflecting on our recent, and very successful UKRF Virtual Conference, held on 23rd November - a gathering that celebrated the collective energy and passion of our Reiki community. For those who couldn’t attend, this article offers a glimpse into the enriching presentations and discussions shared during the event. Read through the sessions and if you missed them, or wish to revisit your favourites the link is in the article.
Our recent attendance at the European Reiki Group’s annual meeting in Brașov, Romania was an amazing chance to connect with our fellow Reiki communities around Europe and really make great plans to bring Reiki to the fore and bring it even more to the mainstream in regard to therapeutic modalities.
It was fabulous to be amongst such wonderful likeminded people and we will have many more updates on this going forward as we, together, make great strides in promoting Reiki as a respected and widely recognised healing practice across all our
nations and beyond. We are very proud of the progress we have made so far and we’re very excited about the work we are still doing. You can rest assured that UKRF is at the forefront of this amazing work.
Back to this issue of Reiki World, we are pleased to feature Wayne Noakes’ pilgrimage to Mount Kurama in Japan, a place of profound significance in the Reiki tradition. Wayne’s reflections on his journey to this sacred mountain are both inspiring and deeply moving, connecting us to the origins of Reiki and its timeless wisdom. It really does inspire us all to want to plan such a trip!
In Mahesha Rice’s article on overcoming depression and anxiety, we explore the transformative power of self-development. Mahesha shares her journey and insights, offering practical guidance on how Reiki and personal growth can pave the way to emotional resilience and wellbeing. Many of us find Reiki at times of personal challenge so this article is a great reminder of how we’ve all developed since we first began our individual Reiki journeys.
As the colder months envelop us, Lorraine Carroll’s piece on winter wellbeing and wisdom provides valuable tips and practices to maintain balance and harmony. Lorraine’s reflections remind us of the importance of self-care and seasonal alignment to nurture our body, mind, and spirit, something we can all easily forget to do when life gets busy.
Ruthie Moriarty and Alan Sanson take us on a journey through the enduring principles of Reiki with their article on working with diligence. Exploring the “QiKi” elements of Reiki, they illuminate how this foundational principle has stood the test of time, offering a fresh perspective on its relevance in our daily lives. Such a great modality, and it ties in so well with Reiki.
We hope this winter edition brings you warmth, insight, and inspiration as you navigate the season’s quiet beauty. As always, thank you for being part of our UKRF community. May these articles offer guidance, reflection, and a deeper connection to the universal energy that unites us all.
Stay warm, stay inspired, and please enjoy this issue of Reiki World.
With love and light,

Setting Energetic Intentions for the New Year
The New Year is a perfect time to release old energy, rebalance, and set intentions for the months ahead. Reiki can help you clear and align your energy for new possibilities.
Start with a simple clearing ritual. In a quiet space, light a candle, ground yourself, and place your hands on your root chakra. Use Reiki to cleanse your energy field, imagining a bright light washing away negativity.
Next, set your intentions. With Reiki flowing through your hands, place them on your heart chakra and reflect: What do I want to invite into my life this year? Write down positive, specific goals, such as “I invite calm and balance.”
Seal your intentions by sending Reiki to your written goals, envisioning them infused with energy and love. This practice aligns you with your highest self and sets a powerful tone for the year ahead. With Reiki, your intentions will grow and manifest in harmony with your energy.
Bright blessings to you all.

Virtual Conference 2024 Harmonising Energy: The Intersection of Reiki and Conscious Awareness
UK Reiki Federation Annual Conference 2024 -
A Step Forward for Reiki -
The UK Reiki Federation Annual Conference 2024, held online on Saturday, 23rd November, was an inspiring and informative event that brought together Reiki practitioners, researchers, and experts to explore the latest developments in Reiki practice, research, and consciousness. We were very pleased to welcome well over 100 participants from all over the world.
The day began with a warm welcome from our Chair, Anne-Marie Carratu, and Vice Chair, Gavin Ford, who shared the exciting progress UKRF has made since our last conference in 2023. A significant milestone was the UKRF becoming an incorporated entity - a limited company.
This change, while requiring considerable effort, marks a pivotal moment for the Federation. It provides greater control over how we operate, secures our future, and strengthens our ability to champion Reiki both across the UK and on a global scale.
With this strong foundation in place, the conference delivered a rich and engaging program. Each session offered valuable insights, from exploring Reiki’s connection to consciousness and animal healing to highlighting the growing credibility of Reiki research. The speakers provided inspiration and practical knowledge, reinforcing the transformative potential of Reiki in personal practice, healthcare, and beyond. We began our day with a wonderful guided meditation led by Ema Melanaphy which got us all in the right space for the sessions ahead.
Here’s a look at the key sessions that made this year’s conference a truly memorable event.
Meditation and Reiki: A Powerful Connection Explored
At this virtual conference, Research Coordinator Vicky McLelland shared fascinating insights into the connection between meditation and Reiki. A survey of 288 Reiki practitioners, primarily from the UK and US, revealed that 95% believe meditation enhances their connection to universal energy.
Popular Reiki techniques to boost energy including self healing and Reiki shares complimented the effects of meditation.
Vicky also announced the expansion of the UKRF Research Group from four to ten members, a step forward in advancing high-quality Reiki research. The group aims to undertake research using rigorous protocols, secure funding, and raise awareness of published studies, strengthening the credibility of Reiki within the holistic health community.
Future research will focus on two projects exploring the effects of Reiki on people with stress in GP practices and the second on the effect of Reiki on behaviour changes in dogs.
Standardising Reiki: A Path to Credibility and Healthcare Integration
In this educational session, Professor Duncan Cross, a Reiki Master Teacher and Professor of Education, emphasised the importance of standardising Reiki practices through CNHC (Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council) accreditation. This step is essential for enhancing Reiki’s credibility, securing NHS recognition, and enabling practitioners to claim insurance, all of which are crucial for professional growth and wider acceptance.
Currently, of CNHC’s 6,009 registrants, 316 are Reiki practitioners, with the UK Reiki Federation verifying around 90% of these applications. CNHC’s core curriculum ensures safe and competent practice, which is vital for integrating Reiki into mainstream healthcare environments such as hospitals, hospices, and GP practices. By adhering to these standards, Reiki practitioners can help establish trust, professionalism, and consistency in the delivery of Reiki services.
Duncan highlighted the many benefits of CNHC registration and explained that accredited practitioners can gain access to opportunities like NHS staff wellness days, social prescribing, and roles in charities and hospices. Registration also enables practitioners to secure insurance, enhancing professional credibility and demonstrating a commitment to safe and ethical practice.
Integrating Reiki into healthcare requires practitioners to align their messaging with NHS values by promoting Reiki’s ability to support relaxation and overall wellbeing, rather than making unsubstantiated claims of curing illnesses. This approach ensures Reiki remains complementary to traditional medical care and is taken seriously within the healthcare sector.
To expand Reiki’s presence, Duncan suggested practical strategies, such as introducing Reiki into universities, pharmacy waiting rooms, and hospital wellbeing programs. Networking with healthcare professionals, preparing presentations for GP practices, and offering volunteer sessions in hospitals can help build awareness and trust in Reiki as a complementary therapy.
Reiki practitioners are encouraged to take action by applying for CNHC registration through the UK Reiki Federation website, offering free taster sessions in community settings, and seeking opportunities to integrate Reiki into local healthcare and wellbeing initiatives.
Standardising Reiki through CNHC accreditation is a vital step forward, providing a foundation for greater credibility, professional recognition, and integration into healthcare systems. By embracing these standards, Reiki practitioners can not only enhance their own professional standing but also contribute to the wider acceptance of Reiki as a valuable and effective complementary therapy.

Exploring Animal Reiki and Consciousness
In this session of the day, Animal Reiki Master Teacher Laura explored the profound bond between humans and animals, focusing on heart coherence and emotional empathy. Laura explained how animals play a vital role in Earth’s spiritual balance, sharing the unique teachings of cats, dogs, and horses. Cats symbolise independence and healing, while dogs embody loyalty, family bonds, and unconditional love. Horses, she explained, teach us peace, presence, and connection to higher consciousness, offering a deep spiritual partnership with humans that spans over 10,000 years.
Laura introduced the scientific concepts of mirror neurons and heart coherence, showing how animals mirror human emotions to foster healing and connection. Horses, in particular, are natural healers due to their ability to synchronise breathing, heart rhythms, and brain activity with humans. She shared practical techniques, such as mindful breathing to calm anxious animals and the “sharing space” method for building trust, especially with horses.
To enhance Reiki practice, Laura encouraged participants to recall joyful or loving memories to achieve heart coherence, a state that promotes deeper emotional and energetic alignment with animals. Reiki with horses, she noted, can help identify core wounds, reveal life purpose, and strengthen spiritual connections.
This inspiring session beautifully combined science and spirituality, offering valuable insights into the healing power of Reiki and our connection with animals. Find out more about Laura here: https://www.animalreikitrainingcentre.co.uk/
Wuji Qigong with Jo Fellows
Jo Fellows, UK Reiki Federation’s Distant Healing Coordinator, delivered a calming and transformative Wuji Qigong session that focused on balancing energy and cultivating deep relaxation. Jo began by explaining the roots of Qigong, an ancient practice originating from early forms of movement and dance to restore health and vitality. Describing Qigong as the “granddaddy of Tai Chi,” she highlighted its role in traditional Chinese medicine as a way to connect with the energy within and around us.
The Wuji practice, central to Jo’s session, represents a return to one’s original nature - a state of pure, unburdened being, much like the Reiki principle of uncovering our true selves. Using breathwork, gentle movements, and guided meditation, Jo led participants through a grounding experience, encouraging them to imagine shedding layers of stress, worry, and anxiety to reveal the bright light of their true essence.
The session emphasised the importance of posture—feeling grounded through the feet, a gentle bend in the knees, and the crown of the head connected to the heavens above—allowing energy to flow freely through the body. Jo’s compassionate guidance created a space of stillness, balance, and renewal, leaving participants feeling revitalised and connected to their inner peace.

Techniques from Touch for Health: Getting into Flow State
UKRF members enjoyed an insightful session with ‘Touch for Health’ expert Geoff Rolls, an expert in organisational development and NLP, who explored the concept of the “flow state” and its links to anatomy, physiology, and psychology. He emphasised the power of language in shaping mental and physical states, encouraging participants to turn abstract concepts like “connection” and “awareness” into actionable behaviours to foster wellbeing.
Geoff shared personal experiences with meditation and introduced Touch for Health kinesiology, explaining how it had transformed his life. A standout moment was his demonstration of the Auricular Energy Technique, a simple ear massage to ease tension and jet lag, which attendees were encouraged to practice regularly.
Key Takeaways:
• Flow State: Integrating anatomy, physiology, and psychology for balance.
• Language & Action: Turning words into impactful actions.
• Mindfulness: Using meditation to overcome challenges.
• Touch for Health Kinesiology: Supporting holistic health.
• Auricular Energy Technique: Relieving tension and promoting relaxation.
Participants left inspired to apply these techniques and reflect on how to turn meaningful words into actions that promote energy flow and healing.

Research continues to demonstrate Reiki’s benefits, particularly for cancer patients and those in palliative care. At the UK Reiki Federation’s 2024 Annual Online Conference, Ann Baldwin, Professor Emeritus of Physiology at the University of Arizona, provided an in-depth overview of the current Reiki research landscape.
With over 130 publications and two books on Reiki, Professor Baldwin emphasised the importance of rigorous, methodologically sound studies for gaining medical acceptance. She discussed The Touchstone Project, which evaluates Reiki studies based on factors like control groups, randomisation, and sample size to ensure quality.
Current Status of Reiki Research:
As of 2024, 143 Reiki studies have been published in peer-reviewed journals. While some lack control groups or sufficient sample sizes, 30 have been rated as very good or excellent. These studies highlight Reiki’s potential to reduce pain, anxiety, stress, depression, and fatigue - particularly in cancer patients, chemotherapy recipients, and individuals in palliative care.
Recent Findings and Future Directions
Recent large-scale studies reinforce Reiki’s effectiveness, but Dr Baldwin stressed the need for further rigorous research focusing on distant Reiki, long-term effects, and optimal protocols. Future studies should incorporate objective outcome measures like blood pressure and stress hormone levels.
This presentation showcased Reiki’s growing evidence base, highlighting its potential benefits and underscoring the need for continued, high-quality research to support its integration into mainstream healthcare. The next step for the research team is to read “Biofield Therapies: Guidelines for Reporting Clinical Trials” to improve reporting standards and study quality.

Deepening Your Reiki Practice: A Journey into Consciousness
Harmonising Reiki offers a transformative way to align your energy, deepen self-awareness, and connect with the universe. In his talk, “Reiki & Consciousness,” Torsten A. Lange, founder of Reiki Academy London, explored the profound link between Reiki and consciousness. This session was not just an academic exercise but a heartfelt invitation to deepen your Reiki practice and transform your understanding of the universe.
Drawing from his mastery in Western and Japanese Reiki lineages, Torsten connected Reiki to universal concepts like energy, the Big Bang, and singularity, inspired by Stephen Hawking’s work. He explained how humans, as physical and spiritual beings, exist within different vibrational levels of the universe, highlighting our interconnectedness and the wisdom of the Akashic records.
Torsten described Reiki as a tool to bridge individual and divine consciousness, suggesting that consciousness exists in all things, even non-living objects. A practical exercise guided participants to observe their thoughts and bodies from an external perspective, using Reiki to access divine consciousness and deepen awareness.
To apply these insights:
• Bring Divine Consciousness into Daily Life: Incorporate Reiki awareness into everyday routines.
• Embrace Interconnectedness: Use this understanding to foster collective healing and positive change.
Torsten’s session was a powerful reminder that Reiki is not just a healing practice but a path to higher consciousness. By integrating these teachings, practitioners can elevate their practice and contribute to a more harmonious, enlightened world.

The Synergy Between Meditation and Reiki in Usui Reiki - Urmi
The integration of meditation within the Usui Reiki system creates a unique synergy that enhances both spiritual and physical wellbeing. Developed by Mikao Usui in the early 20th century, Usui Reiki emphasises meditation as a core practice, strengthening the connection to universal life force energy and fostering holistic healing.
Meditation in Usui Reiki
Raval
Meditation plays a vital role in Usui Reiki, with techniques such as Gassho meditation helping practitioners centre their minds and align with the universal energy. In Gassho, practitioners sit with hands in a prayer position, focusing on their breath and the Reiki principles to cultivate mental clarity and inner peace. Another key technique, Hatsurei-ho, combines breathing exercises and visualisation, using white light imagery to cleanse and balance energy while reciting the Reiki principles. These meditative practices not only enhance focus but also prepare the practitioner to channel energy effectively.
Benefits of Combining Meditation and Reiki
Integrating meditation with Reiki practice enhances its healing potential. Meditation helps practitioners clear their minds of distractions, improving focus and sensitivity to energy imbalances. This synergy deepens the effectiveness of Reiki sessions, fostering relaxation and emotional wellbeing. A survey of Reiki practitioners found that 95% believe meditation strengthens their connection to universal energy. Techniques like mindfulness, guided meditation, and Gassho meditation are widely used to support this connection, promoting both mental clarity and emotional resilience.
Future Research Directions
The relationship between meditation and Reiki offers rich opportunities for further exploration. Future research could examine how different meditation styles influence the outcomes of Reiki sessions and investigate the long-term effects of combining these practices on overall health. Such studies could provide valuable insights for practitioners and recipients, highlighting the benefits of this integration.
Conclusion
The combination of meditation and Reiki in the Usui Reiki system is a powerful tool for personal and spiritual growth. By incorporating meditation into their practice, Reiki practitioners can enhance their connection to universal energy, promote deeper healing, and achieve greater balance and peace. This integration not only supports individual wellbeing but also contributes to a more harmonious and holistic approach to healing.

Work with Diligence
by Ruthie Moriarty & Alan Sanson
The Reiki principles have stood the test of time
When we first considered writing about this principal, we both struggled with ‘diligence’ as a concept… it seemed to imply using a lot of care, a lot of effort and an awful lot of hard graft. Whilst none of these are intrinsically negative, we questioned how we interpret this principle and found our definition which aligns more with our QiKi approach.
Although we are QiKi, we are light-hearted, not frivolous, and we operate from a place of lightness of Being. Our interpretation is more...
“Put your whole being/essence into everything you do. Engage and focus with an inner and outer smile.”
We wonder if this resonates with you too.
To give you some examples of the way we approach what we do may offer more insight. We love writing articles, sharing our knowledge and experience in the hope it may help or resonate with others. We hope that what appears in print always comes across as fresh and light.
However, we spend many hours chatting, researching, writing, editing, filming, more editing, reading, and rewriting until we are happy that our offering is the best it can be. We are focused yet light-hearted. We put in the hours, smile and laugh and share so much in the process.
When we run sessions, we always aim for participants to feel better in and about themselves by the end. Sometimes we decide on the theme for a specific group, such as playing with different feelmoves that correspond with the elements of
Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. Or we focus more on the feelings we hope the moves engender so that, for example, with a group of people with Parkinson’s, we are able to help them relax, to be in-joy and to distract them for a short time from their pain and any physical limitations.
When we film our movies, we always have a theme or feeling we wish to focus on. We have a great deal of fun - which is why we call it “Qiki” (cheeky) - and yet, if you watch any of our movies, we are always focused and in-sync.
This Reiki principle, like all the others, has stood the test of time and is clearly very important to us. We just hope that in refocusing slightly, it makes it even easier and beneficial to apply to the many hours we all devote to our work.
We are now in a fortunate position where our work days are primarily behind us. However, when in business (Alan), teaching and academia (Ruthie) we certainly worked with due diligence and even sometimes over-diligence. Overall we loved our
working life. However, with hindsight, maybe at times, if we had used our current Qiki term of “play” a little more often than “work”, it might have been even more fun. Lighter and better for us and those around us – at work and at home.
If you would like to enjoy some Qiki feelmoves, honouring putting all your essence into what you do, please go here https://bit.ly/FunFocusWithDiligence , where you will be able to lightly play along with us in two very different styles – fun even a little wild and then pure calmness, feeling your intention and emotions.
Be In-Joy as you put your whole essence into everything you do....and remember to smile.
In lovely light-heartedness, Ruthie and Alan
“
This Reiki principle, like all the others, has stood the test of time and is clearly very important to us.
Winter, Wellbeing and Wisdom
by Lorraine Carroll
We now have moved on from the last of the hazy autumnal days with its rustic colours and seeing the final leaves falling to the ground from the trees above into this very beautiful time of the year. Winter!
Normally, winter gets such a bad rap but let’s look at what we can do to fall in love with this season once more. Let’s see if we can change our perspective on this underrated but increasingly and most necessary out of all of the seasons.
Most of us dread winter and hark back longingly for the long warm days of summer but we forget what it takes to get us here in the first place. Yes, we have arrived at the darker half of the year and we seem to celebrate the holidays one minute and back to ‘blah’ again for the rest of the season but this has been very much a conditioned way of viewing winter. There’s a lot more to it than this.
We must try to see that in order to ‘spring’ into a more vibrant season we should learn how to rest and recover from the year just gone.
Winter is a most gorgeous time to mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually reflect on how we have lived the last year and planting the seeds and nurturing them to grow for our strength, projects and plans for the year ahead.
Winter can really drain us at times, so it’s more important than ever to look after ourselves, our health and wellbeing...and while nature is resting, so should we.
We can use this time to look after our own foundations we have planted our seeds in. Take the rose for example, you don’t just see a full bloom rose magically appear suddenly one day, it takes lots of darkness, caring, grounding, nurturing and tending to bring it to this beautiful flower you see. A lot of hard work, rest and care is needed for us as well.
We sometimes forget as practitioners that in order to help others we also need this period of reflection and care at this busy time of the year too.
Modern life strips us of all the natural rhythms of nature that helps us keep ‘in tune’ and knowing when it’s time to rest. So instead we need to improvise and grab rest when we can. We have a
first duty to ourselves to be an effective practitioner for others by taking care of our restful needs.
It’s also very important to step up our health regime by eating foods that have the nourishment we need for the colder days ahead and nutrients to sustain ourselves throughout winter. Warming and vibrant natural foods are a must, like root veg, oatmeal, breads, leafy greens, spices like turmeric, soups, stews, curries, and wonderful ‘pick me up’ snacks like seeds, and antioxidant foods like berries are definitely a good choice.
Visually, a lack of natural, vibrant colours can also affect our overall mood too. So some very energyfilling colours this season are reds, purples, soft whites, and also two colours which some people don’t associate winter with is yellow (perfect for those of you who need a sunshine ‘burst of summer’ colour to visualise with) and blue. Blue is normally forgotten in winter as some believe that blue makes you feel ‘blue’ but blue is calming, healing and great for communication thanks to the throat chakra.
This season, I’ve chosen to focus on two chakras: the root and the third eye. From my experience, clients often struggle with an imbalance between these two—either lacking grounding or becoming overly inward, losing the intuitive reminder to stay grounded. During winter, balancing these chakras is vital.
Try working with both simultaneously in self-care treatments. Place one hand on each chakra, tune in, and reconnect with your natural rhythms. Let the root and third eye harmonise to bring stability and clarity.
In the wintertime there’s next to no natural light outside so you have to go inwards and use the light within you to remind yourself of learning to trust the process of rest, strength and growth throughout this season. Recognise what your body wants and needs whilst using your intuitive knowledge rather than fear/ego, and you’ll see and feel such a difference.
For the crystal babies amongst us, the crystals that would be suitable to use this season are clear quartz, amethyst, rose quartz, haematite, black obsidian, smoky quartz, ruby and amber. Of course cleanse your crystals how you normally would and especially giving an extra loving dose of Reiki on them for a bit longer. This will be so beneficial to both you and your clients.
Activities we could all invest in is to enjoy what nature has left over this year and get outside in the winter sun and stack up on the natural Vitamin D. So get your scarves, hats ‘n’ mittens and get out there to admire the glisten on the trees covered in holly berries, the sparkle on the pavements, hearing the long gone autumn leaves crunch underfoot or watching the steely silver blue hues of the sea waves coming in.
For some people winter is a very quiet time, almost too quiet so maybe invest in some sound therapies,
put on your favourite music and get dancing with friends, maybe you want some chill time? Maybe then go to a sound bath treatment, crystal bowl retreat or just hearing the sounds of nature out and about. It really is lovely at this time of year.
For us practitioners who love aromatherapy go for the scents of the season. Essential oils could include the very spiritual frankincense and myrrh, to go alongside such beautiful scents as pine, peppermint eucalyptus and lavender, which are always favourites.
The flowers and plants to feast our green fingers on are Pansies, Violas, Crocus and the very fragrant Winter Jasmine. Treat these as an extension of you, so tend to these plants and flowers as lovingly as you can.
As nature celebrates the festivals/sabbats this time of year in both Yuletide (midwinter) and Imbolc (first sparks of spring) it is also important to return to self and along with our invaluable practice of Reiki to trust in mindfulness techniques.
This winter is very much in our hands, hearts and minds...mindfulness can be a key to how we can get through the season. Mindfulness can be such a blessing to those who suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder and for those who just feel a little low at this time of year. Your mindfulness practice is just that... your mind is FULL, so you are truly the one who’s in control of what you would like your mind to be filled with. It’s time to release what no longer serves you, to help make your mind clearer and lighter as we head towards the lighter days ahead.
Supporting the new puppy in our life with Reiki
by Tanya Leiper
Welcoming a baby animal into your home is very exciting, and this is a great time to write about this topic since we have just welcomed the beautiful Jack Russell puppy, Grace, into our lives.
Grace’s arrival brought about a big change in our household, especially for Finlay, our springer spaniel, who was promoted from being the youngest member of the household to being big brother.
The transition for Grace has been sizeable since, in her previous home, her world was centred around her mum and her brothers and sisters. Now she lives with one big brother who in her eyes, when she first saw him, was a giant.
I feel blessed to be able to share Reiki with my pets and love that it is such a gentle and supportive therapy both for me and for my animals. Reiki gently assists by balancing the energy within an animal’s body, helping them to feel better, calmer and more centred within themselves, which in turn reduces the effects of stress and anxiety associated with change.
You will have noticed within yourself that when you feel good, you are much more able to cope with whatever life throws your way, and this is just the same for our animals. In addition to sharing Reiki with our new animals, Reiki can also be shared to provide lovely support for our existing pets, as they make the adjustment to having a new companion in their lives.
This is a wonderful way of supporting all our animals since Reiki’s calming energy has a gentle way of assisting the bond of love and understanding between them. The limits to sharing Reiki with our pets really is the limits to our imagination since we can share Reiki to pet beds and bedding, food, water and medication as well as to situations such as to car journeys or vet visits.
Grace has settled into our home very well and it has been a joy to watch her taking in and exploring all the new things in her life, such as her fascination when she first saw snow falling. And big brother Finlay has been a star. He has been so very patient with Grace and all her puppy antics, and I am very proud of him.

Overcoming depression & anxiety through self-development
by Mahesha Rice
Only a few years ago, the shadows of depression and the weight of anxiety consumed my world. Each day became a daunting journey through an emotional sea, where even the simplest tasks seemed like insurmountable challenges. It was during these dark times that I found solace in the beacon of self-development - a commitment that became my guiding light towards healing.
Having spent most of my childhood, teenage years, and some of my university years grappling with depression, the prospect of facing those familiar struggles once again terrified me. The haunting echoes of my past experiences served as a stark reminder of the uphill battle ahead. However, it was precisely this awareness that fuelled my determination to break free from the cyclical patterns that had gripped me for so long.
Today, I open up and share my transformative journey, with the hope that my story may serve as a source of inspiration for those navigating similar struggles, providing a testament that even in the face of daunting familiarity, healing is not only possible but achievable with resilience and the right tools.
My WHY:
Recognising the need for change, I embraced the world of self-development. This transformative journey wasn’t an instant remedy but a commitment to growth and exploration, where I discovered a diverse array of therapeutic tools that would reshape my life.
Motivated by an unwavering love for my husband and children, I embarked on the transformative
odyssey of self-development. The desire to break free from the suffocating grip of depression and anxiety was intensified by the profound love I felt for my family. Each step in this journey became not just a personal commitment but a testament to my dedication to creating a brighter future for those I held dearest.
A Commitment to Self-Development as the Turning Point:
Amidst the darkness, a flicker of hope emerged - a commitment to self-development. It wasn’t a magic cure but a decision to embark on a deliberate and purposeful journey towards healing. This commitment became my anchor, grounding me in the belief that there was a path forward, even if it seemed obscured at the time.
Incorporating Powerful Tools into the Daily Routine:
The realisation that healing required consistent effort led me to build a daily routine enriched with powerful tools. Morning rituals became a sacred space for self-reflection and setting positive intentions for the day. This structured routine provided stability and predictability, essential elements often absent during the tumultuous days of depression. Consistency in this routine became a vital anchor during the turbulent storms of depression and anxiety.
The Transformative Power of Meditation:
Mindfulness meditation emerged as a formidable ally in my journey towards healing. By cultivating a heightened awareness of the present moment,
I found a sanctuary where I could observe my thoughts without judgment, fostering a sense of inner calm. Complementing this practice, breathwork exercises provided instant relief during moments of heightened stress. This practice provided not only a reprieve from anxiety but also a platform for self-discovery and inner peace.
Journaling: A Pathway to Insight:
Integrating journaling into my daily routine proved to be a transformative practice for gaining profound insights. Introduced to this therapeutic tool during a three-day workshop with the remarkable Anna Garcia, known for her Relationship Intensive, I learned a unique approach she aptly termed “Vomit Journaling.”
The concept is simple - pouring out everything that weighs on your mind, expressing yourself freely without inhibition. While the notion may sound deceptively easy, the power lies in its ability to provide an unfiltered space for processing emotions. This practice has become one of my cherished tools, offering a cathartic outlet to explore the depths of my thoughts and feelings. Through the process of Vomit Journaling, I not only express my innermost struggles but also gain valuable insights. It has become a dynamic tool to identify patterns, recognise triggers, and joyfully acknowledge the gradual improvements in my journey - an invaluable and tangible record of my progress.
Commitment to Personal Growth:
The commitment to personal growth isn’t a one-time decision; it’s a daily choice. Diving into self-help literature, attending workshops, and seeking guidance from mentors became integral to my growth process. Each experience added depth to my understanding and propelled me further along the path of healing.
Harnessing the Power of Positive Affirmations and Gratitude Practices:
Positive affirmations and gratitude practices emerged as pillars of strength in my journey towards emotional wellbeing. The simple act of affirming positive statements about oneself can have a profound impact on one’s mindset. Incorporating positive affirmations into my daily routine provided a counter-narrative to the negative self-talk that often accompanies depression and anxiety. Repeating affirmations such as “I am resilient,” “I am worthy of love,” and “I am capable of overcoming challenges” gradually rewired my thought patterns, fostering a more positive and empowering outlook on life.
Inspired by the transformative effects of positive affirmations, I extended this practice to involve my children in a nightly ritual. Before bedtime, we gather in front of the mirror, and together, we recite affirmations that uplift and empower each of us. This practice not only instills a sense of confidence and positivity in my children but also creates a deeper connection as we share these affirmations as a family.
Gratitude practices have proven to be equally impactful, serving as a daily reminder of the abundance and positivity in our lives. In the evenings, my husband and I engage in the ritual of writing down things we are grateful for. This simple act of reflection not only enhances our appreciation for the present moment but also strengthens the bond between us. Sharing our gratitude lists with each other by reading them out loud, further amplifies the positive energy in our home.
Involving my children in gratitude practices has become a treasured family tradition. Before bedtime, I encourage them to express something they are thankful for, bringing a mindset of appreciation and mindfulness. This practice not
(Continued on page 28)
only cultivates gratitude but also teaches them to recognise the positive aspects of their lives, contributing to their emotional resilience.
The collective impact of positive affirmations and gratitude practices within my family has been nothing short of transformative. As we engage in these rituals together, we create an atmosphere of positivity, love, and appreciation in our home. These practices have not only played a significant role in my personal healing journey but have also become integral to our shared experience as a family, reinforcing the notion that cultivating a positive mindset is a powerful tool for emotional wellbeing.
Bridging the Gap with Shared Stories:
Today, I share my story not as a tale of conquered demons but as a testament to the resilience found within us all. The journey from despair to healing is not linear, and it’s paved with challenges, setbacks, and triumphs. By sharing my experiences, I hope to bridge the gap between isolation and connection, offering a lifeline to those who might be navigating the same stormy seas.
Closing Thoughts on Therapy Work and Mental Health Resilience:
To those currently battling their own shadows, know that there is strength in acknowledging vulnerability and seeking help. Self-development is not a one-size-fits-all solution but a deeply personal and evolving journey. Embrace the commitment to growth, incorporate powerful tools into your daily routine, and remember that, even in the darkest moments, the seeds of healing can take root and bloom into a brighter tomorrow.
Even in the darkest moments, remember that each tool you acquire is a step closer to reclaiming your joy and finding lasting peace within.

The Reiki Principles
To bring the spiritual depth into everyday life, Mikao Usui, the founder of the system of Reiki, created a set of five principles (or precepts). They can be found on his memorial stone in the grounds of the Saihoji Temple in Tokyo. He called them...
‘The secret method of inviting good fortune. The marvellous medicine for all sickness.’
Be kind to others
Every morning and every night sit in Gassho (palms placed together) and speak these words out loud in your heart - Mikao Usui
Pilgrimage to Mount Kurama
by Wayne Noakes
The day began like any other - I woke, opened my eyes, and oriented myself to my surroundings. But this was no ordinary day. I was in Japan, in the ancient city of Kyoto, preparing to explore Mount Kurama - the revered site where Mikao Usui is said to have practised the “difficult way.” This rigorous method pushes the body to its physical limits, allowing meditation to bring about a state of consciousness where the soul and spirit can be witnessed as separate yet unified in Being. (That’s the technical part over with!)
After successfully navigating the Kyoto metro the day before, I mapped my route. Though Kurama village lies just north of Kyoto, the journey involved two metro lines, a brisk thirtyminute walk, and finally, a local electric mountain train. The metro had been busy, but the last train ride was akin to Chinese rush hour - I was shoehorned into the carriage.
Arriving at the final stop, I bought my exit ticket (having failed to reach the on-board machine) and stepped out. Mount Kurama holds a special place in Japanese folklore, believed to be where universal life energy first touched Earth over a million years ago. This significance became tangible as I passed through the first gate (see photo) and felt an immediate sense of Peaceas if I were embracing an ancient tree.
Though the crowded train ride had left me wary of the ascent, the crowd dispersed, many heading for the cable car. I, however, heeded Don Alexander’s advice to hold an “open intention” and set off on foot with water, dried fruit, and the expectation of a two-hour climb.
The mountain defies easy description - its beauty demands time and reflection. To keep things concise (and leave room for your own experience), here’s a brief summary of my ascent:
Steps. And steps. And more steps.
Ancient forests of towering Acer trees - autumnal reds, golds, browns, mingled with deep green pines.
Small shrines of wood and stone - places for blessings and water cleansing.
Steps off to a pond - koi fish gliding beneath red Acer leaves, fed by a gentle waterfall.
Expansive views of valleys below, larger red-andwhite shrines adorned with golden decorations. Hidden flat areas with engraved stones, small waterfalls, and secluded gates.
Ancient cedar trees, their massive trunks wrapped in sacred ropes and delicate hangings. A stone monument with three metal rings symbolizing Power, Light, and Love - grounded here on the mountain.
And then: the temple.
The expansive, grand structure stood with guardian statues, red-and-white wooden frames, hanging paper globes, and incensefilled cauldrons. I lit a stick, placed it, and closed my eyes...finding stillness, offering a prayer.
Nearby, a smaller temple called to me. I removed my shoes, entered, and sat quietly, reflecting on the sacredness of the space.
Beyond the temple, the path grew wilder. Steps of rock and root led me past an ancient bell -

irresistible with its battering-ram striker, and into a peaceful thicket of pines. The roots formed a woven platform, leading to a small clearing with remnants of a wooden structure, stone pedestals, and a gap through the trees revealing distant forest treetops.
And then: return.
Time had become irrelevant. I began my climb mid-morning and returned to Kurama village by late afternoon. The paved ascent alone might take an hour and a half non-stop, but I had no intention of rushing.
As I sit now, writing this, I can still sense the stillness of the mountain. And yet, as I recall the crush of the train ride up, I’m left wonderingwhere did all those people go?

Seijaku: Finding Serenity in midst of activity
by Kerrie Baker
As the winter months roll in we are offered an opportunity to reflect on the beauty of stillness. The Japanese principle of Seijaku teaches us the profound power of tranquility amidst the chaos of life. Rooted in Zen philosophy, Seijaku translates to “serenity in the midst of activity,” encouraging us to cultivate a sense of inner calm that remains unshaken by external circumstances.
Seijaku is a key principle in Japanese aesthetics and is often described as a state of energised calm.
Seijaku can help you:
• Navigate worries
• Adapt to a calmer state
• Keep a calm mindset
• Create a close bond with nature
Some ways to implement seijaku in your life include:
• Taking a walk in a garden
• Removing unnecessary clutter (you can do it!)
• Taking a break when you are feeling pressurised at work or studies
• Allocating specific times during the day to disconnect from digital devices (again, you can do it!)
Embracing Seijaku in Reiki Practice
In Reiki, we often seek harmony and balance within ourselves and our surroundings. Seijaku aligns beautifully with these goals, as it emphasises the value of pausing, reflecting, and connecting with our true essence. During a Reiki session, both the practitioner and the recipient can embody Seijaku by creating a space of stillness where healing energy flows effortlessly. This stillness is not merely the absence of sound or motion but an active presence - a state of heightened awareness and deep peace.

As winter settles in, nature invites us to pause and reflect. Many trees stand bare, conserving energy, while the earth rests under a frosty blanket, preparing for renewal. This quiet season mirrors the Japanese principle of Seijaku - finding serenity in stillness amidst life’s activity.
Winter offers us the chance to slow down, reconnect with our inner light, and realign with our purpose. In this issue, we explore themes that resonate with Seijaku and the healing power of winter.
In this issue, Wayne Noakes shares his pilgrimage to Mount Kurama, Japan, a sacred Reiki site. Mahesha Rice offers insights on overcoming depression and anxiety through self-development, while Lorraine Carroll provides practical tips for winter wellbeing and wisdom.
We hope this issue inspires you to embrace winter’s quiet beauty and deepen your Reiki practice. Wishing you warmth and serenity this winter.
