Dear Members, Gavin

We extend a very warm welcome to this edition of Reiki World, where you can read some inspiring articles.

Please do remember to send any of your articles and photos to Kerrie for publishing at publications@reikifed.co.uk

vicechair@reikifed.co.uk chair@reikifed.co.uk

One of our fantastic articles, written by Giancarlo Serra, is on the theme of gratitude. This is a precept very close to our hearts as we extend our awareness and gratitude to all of our members and those who support us on a daily basis. This is your UK Reiki Federation and we welcome hearing from you about anything new you would like to see from us, so do please get in touch.

We have sent an email asking if anyone would like to step forward as volunteers and offer their time to support the UKRF, and we are very pleased with the response and hope to have an expanded team of people in the very near future.

2023 sees the UKRF with a full list of online events for our members to enjoy, with a back catalogue to view in the members only area of our website. In addition, we no longer have any lockdown restrictions and have arranged an in-person Conference in September, details of which are contained within the magazine and on our website.

https://www.reikifed.co.uk/ukrf-conference-2023/

We are also planning to create a one-day online event too for those who cannot make the inperson Conference.

CNHC registration – we continue to provide excellent educational support for those members wishing to gain CNHC registration or for those members wishing to have their Reiki courses accredited. We have a number of CPD courses

advertised on our website, all of which count towards your annual 12 hours of CPD.

The UKRF continue to be a part of the Integrated Healthcare Collaboration (IHC), working alongside 26 other complementary therapy originations. As a collective, we are there to support the whole community and elevate the Government’s understanding of how beneficial Complementary therapies are for everyone.

We continue to work with and alongside all the member organisations of the IHC and are very grateful to all those of you who took the time to complete their cost-of-living survey. The results of which are contained in an article in this issue.

We also continue to be the only UK based organisation to be part of the European Reiki Group, which is an extensive group, representing Reiki across Europe, working collaboratively on projects. The UKRF will join their Annual Conference to discover what the latest research has to offer and any other information that we can all share.

Being mindful of gratitude, we thank you all again for being members of the UK Reiki Federation.

Distance Healing Group - Spring updates from Jo Fellows...

The distance healing team continues to grow, but we are always looking for new members too. The more healers we can get involved, the stronger the healing for those that request it. Hiroshi Doi suggests that healing strength for the recipient is to the square number of those sending, which is wonderful.

Researcher Lynne McTaggart suggests what we healers already know too - “When individuals in a group focus their intention together on a single target, a powerful collective dynamic emerges that can heal longstanding conditions, mend fractured relationships, lower violence and even rekindle life purpose.

“But the greatest untold truth of all is that group intention has a mirror effect, not only affecting the recipient but also reflecting back on the senders.”

Members of the UKRF distance healing group send (or set their intention to send) healing to those that request it from the group and to each other at 8pm each evening. If that is something you are able to commit to, please do contact Distance Healing Co-ordinator Jo Fellows.

We have had some wonderful results from our group. Just today I received the following email: “I asked you to include Coral in the healing list. I am very happy to report that she has made a miraculous recovery and is at home and doing really well. I’m sure it would be okay to take her off the healing list now. Thank you, and bless you for all that you do.”

Distance Healing with the UK Reiki Federation

The UK Reiki Federation offer their Practitioner members the opportunity to become part of a large distance healing network...and we’re always looking for new team members!

Distance Healing Group

UKRF Reiki Practitioners give their time each week to send Reiki healing to anyone who makes a request from anywhere in the world. How the group works is that each week the volunteers receive a list of those people/animals/events that have requested healing and we all collectively send positive Reiki healing to everyone on the list, at a time that suits each one of us.

Would you like to join our team?

done me

Go on, give yourself a well deserved pat on the back

We are all aware of that negative voice within ourselves which sows doubt, eroding both our energy and our confidence with phrases such as ‘I can’t do that,’ and ‘I am not good enough’.

When this happens the negative energy that we project towards ourselves just makes everything that bit more difficult and that bit more of a struggle

So why not challenge this by choosing a more positive voice to listen to instead?

When your mind starts telling you “I can’t.” what about replying, “Thank you, but actually we don’t know that yet, and I would like to give it a go.”

Or when your mind starts telling you, “I am not good enough,” what about replying, “Thank you, but it will be a lot of fun to try and I will learn loads.”

Don’t berate the negative voice since it’s actually our own mind trying to be helpful. Instead thank the negative voice for its input and challenge it with a more positive statement.

And when you have gone ahead and put yourself out there remember to give yourself a pat on the back and a, “Well done me.”

Giving self-praise is a marvellous way of helping build positive mental building blocks within the mind, and when the brain takes pleasure from the things we have done, they in turn become easier and more pleasurable to work on.

Think about an occasion when someone said to you, “What a great job, well done,” and how good you felt when you received that positive energy.

So, go ahead and build those positive energy building blocks in your mind by giving yourself a pat on the back recognising the effort and the progress that you have made.

Even a very small amount of progress is still a positive building block and the positive voice is also a lovely refreshing change from the negative one.

What is gratitude?

It’s no secret that showing gratitude is good for you. As well as being backed by science, leaders such as the Dalai Lama are also big fans, so it’s no wonder that more of us are taking the time to be thankful for what we have in our lives.

One of the best ways to show thankfulness on a daily basis is to keep a gratitude journal.

While regular journaling has been proven to improve your wellbeing, making a point of jotting down all the things that you are grateful for can take the experience to a whole new level. Keeping a gratitude journal is easy and on the simplest level it involves making a note of the things that you are grateful for that day. You can decide how long your list is each day and how much detail you want to go into. The great thing is that it’s an easy habit to form and after a while, you are left with a collection of inspiring material to look back on when you are in need of a pick-me-up.

On a general scale, gratitude can be thought of as a mental state of mind: you are consciously grateful for things and people in your life. Gratitude can also be thought of as small acts of acknowledging what and for whom you’re grateful, such as calling up your best friend and telling them how much they mean to you. It’s an act of expressing your gratitude that many may resonate with.

You may have read or heard about gratitude in high volumes when it comes to positivity, health, and wellness. It has become one of the cornerstones of living a mindful life, and a tool used by many to achieve happiness, peace, and wellbeing.

Gratitude is simply the appreciation of what is meaningful or valuable to oneself, it is an attitude of counting your blessings. It’s about feeling appreciative or thankful for what you have, rather than focussing on what you don’t have.

Counting your blessings improves your self-esteem, because when you feel better about your life, you are less likely to compare yourself negatively with others. Some people are naturally more grateful than others. But the good news is we can all become more grateful through practice.

Some of the benefits of a regular gratitude practice are:

When the brain feels gratitude, it activates areas responsible for feelings of reward, moral cognition, subjective value judgments, fairness, economic decision-making, and self-reference. Many recent studies linked to positive psychology have suggested that people who are more grateful have a higher level of subjective wellbeing.

REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - SPRING 2023 REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF 10

This results in several benefits, such as:

– Helping you form healthy habits to take better care of yourself.

– Improving sleep quality.

– Reducing levels of depression, anxiety, and envy.

– Increasing life satisfaction, vitality, hope, and optimism.

Gratitude journals

One of the best ways to show thankfulness on a daily basis is to keep a gratitude journal. A gratitude journal is a notebook or other space devoted specifically for thoughts of gratitude. Instead of focusing on the darkness or what is lacking in your life, a gratitude journal helps you focus more on the joy, the light, the things that you already have. There is no a right way, or a wrong way to keep a gratitude journal, however there is an effective way to do it – and this is when a gratitude journal becomes a regular and easy part of your lifestyle.

Tips for a successful Gratitude Journal:

While regular journaling has been proven to improve your wellbeing, making a point of jotting down all the things that you are grateful for can take the experience to a whole new level. Keeping a gratitude journal is easy and on the simplest level it involves making a note of the things that you are grateful for that day.

You can decide how long your list is each day and how much detail you want to go into. The great thing is that it’s an easy habit to form and after a while, you are left with a collection of inspiring material to look back on when you are in need of a pick-me-up.

The following are some tips on how to write a gratitude journal:

1 3 2 4 6 5

Make it a habit. According to a 2009 study published in the European Journal of Social Psychology, it takes 66 days for a new behaviour to become automatic. The easiest way to create a new habit is to tie into another established habit like a routine.

Choose small things you are grateful for. You can write down many things you are grateful for, focusing on the simple basic moments, such a lovely sunny day, being able to buy food at the supermarket, enjoying the company of a good friend.

Mix different ideas. Write about something different every time. Even if you want to express gratitude for the same person or a recurring event, write a different reason that you are grateful.

Be concise. Experiment with what works for you. If you’re feeling thankful for multiple things then don’t hesitate to write about them. Listing 3-5 items you are grateful for is more than enough.

How often? You do not need to write every day, although I prefer this to be a daily ritual. A study found that writing just 3 times a week is more powerful than if you were to write every day.

There isn’t a right time of day to write in your journal; writing at different times can have different benefits. Again, just experiment.

REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF 11 REIKI WORLD

What is gratitude?...continued

This is how to start a gratitude journal:

Step 1 – Pick a journal that you like having around, that you can see. These days there are apps that can help you keeping a digital journal. I personally prefer something that you can see and touch.

Step 2 – Decide when you are going to write on your gratitude journal and stick to it. If it’s every day, decide the time of the day when you are going to do it, and it only needs to take a few minutes. Just remind yourself why you are doing it and the benefits resulting from writing a gratitude journal.

Step 3 – Find a quiet place to write where you can be present. Even better it this is the same place you use every time. You can build a ritual around it: candles, tea, music. It can be a space inside or outside your house.

Step 4 – Write down the date, 5 things you are grateful for and the reasons why you are grateful. Instead of writing only “I am grateful for my dog”, you can be specific and write “I am grateful for my dog because we spend a wonderful time together, she keeps me company when I am sad and she pushes me to go out and exercise when I do not want to.”

Step 5 – Feeling is the secret. It is not just about writing down the different items and the reasons why you are grateful for those things in your life. The most important element in writing a gratitude journal is to feel what you are writing about. You need to use your imagination. You can close your eyes after each sentence and feel the reasons why you are grateful.

Examples of Gratitude Ideas:

* What skills or abilities are you thankful to have?

* Write about a person in your life that you’re especially grateful for, and why.

* What is there about a challenge you’re experiencing right now that you can be thankful for?

* What do you do to relax and feel better?

* List five body parts that you’re grateful for and why.

* What about the city you live in are you grateful for?

* What materialistic items are you most grateful for?

* Who has done something this week to help you or make your life easier and how can you thank them?

* Write about a difficult skill that you learned with patience and persistence.

* What elements of nature are you grateful for and why?

* What do others appreciate about you?

* What cheers you up when you’re upset?

* What you have recently purchased that adds value to your life.

* Write about a place that makes you want to travel there again.

* What book did you read that had the most impact on your life?

Each gratitude journal prompt may have significance that you can only discover.

Each item, person, or experience will hold a special place in your heart. The important part of gratitude journaling is to make it a habit. It comes with practice and sometimes can even be confusing. Still, the benefits are immense.

Working without symbols...

I still remember the first time I used a Reiki symbol when I was introduced to them during my level II training. Or rather, what I remember is the response of the person I was practicing on in the class. We’d been learning how to draw the CKR symbol, what its significance was and ways to use it. Now it was time to try using it with each other. As I imagined drawing the symbol on the palm of each hand and placing my hands on the shoulders of the person I was partnered with, they reacted to the appearance of the symbol, as if I’d done something different physically, which in a way I had. They commented afterwards how much deeper and stronger the Reiki had felt when the symbol was used.

I had been aware of a sensation of a strengthening of energy in my hands, as if I was now able to work at a more profound level, but it was the response of the other person to it that made the longest lasting impression. After the course I began using all the symbols in my Reiki work, both on myself and others. I appreciated the increasing connection to Reiki I felt through using them and the stronger responses they invoked. The effect of working with the distance symbol was particularly striking and I felt a growing confidence as I experienced its effects.

Then gradually over time I found myself using them less and less. I completely dropped the use of the distance symbol in my Distance Reiki work, and only occasionally used the CKR or SHK symbols. When I did use them there wasn’t that same powerful effect I witnessed at the start and the Reiki sessions I gave seemed to be becoming more effective and going deeper without them. What was happening?

During this time I came across the book ‘Reiki and Japan’ by Masaki Nishina, a practitioner of both Western and Jikiden Reiki. In the part of the book covering symbols he writes ‘In Japanese Reiki, symbols are mere tools used as supplements during treatment’. He goes on to say ‘Once practitioners think Reiki ability comes from the symbols, they tend to depend heavily on them and start using them on virtually anything, often unable to do anything without them.’

The importance of the symbols and how to use them had been covered extensively in my training, but no mention had been made of being in a situation where you didn’t use them. Reading Nishina’s words brought a huge sense of relief to me and confirmed that what I was doing was still very much Reiki and was in fact a sign of a growing connection with Reiki and an increasing confidence and trust in it. I didn’t need to force myself to use the symbols, but if the need for them arose they were there to draw on. The Reiki would show me if a symbol was needed, without me consciously using one, and, conversely, the more Reiki guided me, the less a symbol was needed.

Through further reading, I discovered more instances where the use of symbols is viewed in a similar vein. In ‘This is Reiki’ by Frank Arjava Petter, Petter says ‘The best technique is the one that you don’t need anymore. This is not because the technique is not good or not good anymore, but because it has taught you to arrive at the desired goal without it.’

This for me also helped to explain how my early experiences of the symbols had been so strong. It was as if once I knew how that effect felt on an experiential and instinctive level, it wasn’t

REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - SPRING 2023 REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF 14
“To view the symbols as a tool frees us up to work with them more instinctively.”

necessary to feel it each and every time; I would already be tuned into it and have unconsciously integrated it into my Reiki practice. Therefore letting the symbols go, rather than forcing myself to use them, was a natural progression. The struggle for me came from the fact that the symbols had been given such importance in my training and in the wider Reiki world. I felt caught between that and my instinct, until I accepted that the way I was working was okay. To read that my decreasing reliance on the use of symbols was a positive rather than a negative feature was affirming.

Tadao Yamaguchi in his book ‘Light on Reiki’ writes ‘I do believe that symbols today are often regarded as the most important thing in the practice of Western Reiki. People rely too much on symbols, which are simply just peripheral tools. Reiki itself is much more important than the tools.’

The symbols have their uses, but we are not bound to them; they are not what connect us to Reiki. All of the authors quoted above, all practitioners, are not against using symbols, but ask us to bring a sense of perspective to how we view them, and the importance we give them.

If you have ever felt something similar to me, believing you have to use the symbols, despite your inner voice, I encourage you to explore working with and without them to see how it feels. Trust your abilities, see what is possible. How much is habit, and to what degree have the symbols become Reiki for you? And if you are someone who has never considered their use of symbols and uses them automatically, I ask you to take a step back and look at how you use them. How does the thought of carrying out a session without them feel to you? Do you dare to try? Some people will always use the symbols to a greater or lesser degree than others, and that’s how it should be; it is a continuum rather than an either/or.

To view the symbols as a tool frees us up to work with them more instinctively; to bring them into our practice when it feels right and not because we assume we should. Like any tool, it is there to aide us, but it is not the work we do. Nishina writes, ‘In Japanese Reiki, the usage of shirushi (symbols) … is quite simple because the most important part of Reiki is achieved through one’s own natural ability.’ Let us learn to trust that ability and ourselves.

Ocha: The Japanese art of TEA

What is the Japanese Tea Ceremony?

The Japanese tea ceremony, dating back to the twelfth century, is an artistic pastime, unique to Japan that features the serving and drinking of Matcha, a powdered Japanese green tea.

It is a choreographic ritual of preparing and serving Matcha, together with traditional Japanese sweets to balance with the bitter taste of the tea. Preparing tea in this ceremony means pouring all one’s attention into the predefined movements. The whole process is not about drinking tea, but is about aesthetics, and preparing a bowl of tea from one’s heart.

The host (Teishu) of the ceremony always considers the guests with every movement and gesture. Even the placement of the tea utensils is considered from the guests view point (angle), especially the main guests called the Shokyaku.

Serving tea

In Japan, the ritual of serving tea (Temae) is an art and a spiritual discipline and an occasion to appreciate the company of friends, and simply a moment of calmness and simplicity.

And it’s not all about the tea. An essential element of the tea ceremony is the room aesthetics, maybe the flower arrangements, ceramic displays and the special meal (Kaiseki) that accompanies the tea. The bonds of friendship between the host (and guests are strengthened during the ceremony when the host theirself makes and serves the tea.

Ocha

On a different level, the Japanese tea ceremony is simply an entertainment where the guests are invited to drink tea in pleasant and relaxing surroundings.

Kokoroire: “Pouring one’s heart totally into (devotion of) the tea ceremony.” The Teishu, is someone who devotes his life to the ritual preparation of a bowl of tea. They live “the way of tea.”

Get calm fast...

Enjoy 3 minutes of super simple self care and connection today

Relax, release and rebalance yourself now, starting with just 3 minutes a day, alongside Liz Clifton the founder of take34u. She’s on a mission to empower at least 3 million individuals (of any species), to create the clear, calm, connected, confidence to choose to be themselves and to take at least 3 minutes of daily self care.

Each activity is based on getting you truly connected and present with yourself. It’s a great addition to your daily Reiki self care. Three minutes of easy activity to support you with your own inner self connection and getting calm.

Your simple daily check in:

Get yourself comfortable and as you close your eyes bring your awareness to your breath for a moment.

Then ask yourself “How do I feel in this moment?”

Take time to acknowledge whatever comes up for you. It may be a word, a picture, a thought, a feeling, a taste, a sound or a memory that you notice. Or it may be nothing at all. And whatever you experience is perfect for you in the moment.

Be patient with yourself especially if you’ve not been enjoying much self connection on a regular basis.

As with every new practice it may take you a few repetitions before you receive an answer and that’s absolutely ok.

REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - SPRING 2023
REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF 18

The easiest way to start this 3 minute daily practice is to choose 3 spaces in your day to start checking in with yourself.

3 minute daily check in times:

1) Maybe first thing as you wake or when you’re brushing your teeth.

2) Lunchtime or a regular refreshment break.

3) Before you go to bed or as you finish your activities for the day.

And if 3 minutes is a stretch, start with just one minute for a daily check in once a day at your chosen time.

Or this 3 second breathing pattern:

Breathe in for the count of 1...

Breathe out for the count of 2...

Congratulations you just took 3 seconds for you!

Top tip:

By linking the daily check-ins to an activity or event that you’re already doing, you’re far more likely to stick to it.

Whatever you choose to do get started today and start enjoying your new increased self awareness and calm as you take34u.

With so much love, light and gratitude for you exactly as you are right now and always.

Integrated Healthcare Collaborative Survey of Practitioners

Survey shows significant increase in patients presenting with mental health issues

A survey by the Integrated Healthcare Collaborative (IHC) of complementary, traditional and natural healthcare therapists revealed a 63% increase in patients presenting with mental health related issues, including anxiety and stress.

In total, 1351 therapists and practitioners shared their experience of working post Covid and during a cost of living crisis. Figures show therapists are facing challenging times. Incomes are under strain due to increased costs, and patients are reporting that they are unable to come as often, or not at all, due to financial pressures. An unexpected and worrying statistic to emerge, though, was that 63% of therapists who highlighted different patient symptoms reported more presenting with mental health issues, including anxiety and stress.

If we get a situation in which there is growing patient demand for mental health support, but where patients cannot afford to access it privately, then the potential knock-on effect on under pressure NHS services could be significant. Already, patients are telling therapists that they are finding it difficult to get help through their GP.

14% said that they were unsure how they would be affected after March 2023 (Government support ends).

The average level of confidence across the industry regarding the future viability of their business/ practice moving forward in the current economic climate.

Following Covid restrictions and continued pressure on NHS services, this is a worrying increase, given that patients are also struggling financially to access other support and reducing the frequency of their appointments.

Despite challenging times there are clear signs in the survey that patients continue to need and seek services within our sector, and that therapists and practitioners across our industry make a huge contribution to the provision of healthcare in the UK.

My Year of Reiki CPD

Albert Einstein is quoted as saying “Once you stop learning you start dying”. This sounds quite extreme, but I have definitely found that learning is life-enhancing, motivational and self-perpetuating as it generates a thirst for further knowledge. Because I am passionate about Reiki, doing Reiki CPD is not a burden, but more of a pleasurable hobby as it is feeding my passion.

2022

For me, 2022 was the richest year of CPD since I first trained in Reiki. This was because the pandemic meant that a lot of Reiki CPD went on-line where it has stayed which makes it very accessible, without the time and cost considerations of travelling to physical events. The UKRF in particular have greatly increased the number of CPD events they offer and they are all available free to members. So it has never been as easy as it is now to access Reiki CPD. Since the pandemic, the vast majority of my CPD is now attending on-line events via my phone. Often I go straight from working at home to a Reiki CPD event, and then seconds later I am with my family in the kitchen. Our meal times are often arranged around Reiki events (which I must admit does not always go down well with my wife).

Record-keeping

I keep a simple spreadsheet to record my Reiki CPD with the following columns; date, activity, whether it was structured or reading, comments/ learnings, duration, cumulative CPD hours year to date. Without feeling that I had to make a particular effort I accumulated 71 hours of Reiki CPD over 2022. UKRF state that ‘Each Reiki Practitioner should undertake a minimum of 12 hours of CPD per year. A minimum of 8 hours should be specific to Reiki. A maximum of 4 hours may be general, including reflection or research.’

Planning

As well as my Reiki CPD I do CPD for my day job in financial services and of course CPD needs to be fitted around family, social and other commitments and interests. I find the monthly CPD emails from UKRF useful as I can put the dates in my diary and save them wherever possible. It is great that the UKRF have started to put recordings of events onto their website. I’ve not yet got into the habit of accessing events I have missed and this is something I am planning to do this year. Then when I am doing household tasks like preparing food or washing up I can listen to Reiki wisdom on demand.

Types of CPD

Some of the events that I attended last year included:

• The UKRF Reiki shares that Jo Fellows and Amit Sihra hosted. Even though I was alone at home, these events still made me feel part of the Reiki community and, like with an inperson share, there was the double benefit of both giving and receiving Reiki. These shares are little oases of peace at the end of the day.

• The Reiki Revolution shows on Youtube usually at 8pm on a Tuesday hosted by Torsten Lange which always include a Reiki share and some teaching from Torsten and, sometimes, an interview with a guest Reiki practitioner.

REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - SPRING 2023 REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF 24

• The Reiki Awareness Week extravaganza which was a feast of Reiki events in September with a fantastic variety of guest speakers. I attended the AGM whilst travelling on a bus on the Isle of Wight, which unfortunately meant that I missed parts of the meeting when the phone reception cut out.

• Writing articles like this for Reiki World counts as CPD, and I have written a few articles over the year when ideas have occurred to me.

Highlights

Every event has been a treasure in its own right, but here are two which stick out in my memory:

• Chanting the Reiki principles in Japanese with Pam Morris. Pam explained that Mikao Usui recommended his students do this every day, and Pam herself has adopted this daily habit. Even though I did not understand the words I was chanting, I felt connected to Reiki, and to all the other people chanting (even though our microphones were on mute) and the repetitive rhythm was soothing and meditative.

• Frans Stiene’s talk in Reiki Awareness Week where Frans explained that Reiki is not outside us, that we do not need to connect to it, as we are already Reiki. He mentioned that Hawayo Takata in her diary said that Reiki is in the pit of our stomach and our job is to release it by concentration. Reiki is about that awakening. We ARE the Great White Light. By following the principles, for example removing anger and worry, we free that light to shine.

An invitation to come back to Reiki

Every Reiki event is an invitation and a reminder to us to come back to Reiki, back from the distractions of day-to-day life, and often they are spur for us to take Reiki back into the world and share it with others.

I am grateful to all the wonderful teachers who have given up their time for free to share, teach and inspire me over the past year. I also thank everyone behind the scenes who made the events happen: for example, planning, administration, marketing, and technical support.

I’m looking forward to another year of expanding my knowledge and experience of Reiki in 2023–a wonderful ongoing voyage of discovery which has no end point as there is always more to learn about the magic that is Reiki.

Visiting Kyoto - and why we’re going back

Our experience of visiting Kyoto and why we are going back again in April 2023

Having provided Reiki Healing to clients along with Hypnotherapy I decided in 2019 I felt that it was time to progress and complete my Masters training to enable me to teach. My partner David Muzzlewhite was also a Reiki Healer and Spiritual Healer and it was our intention to both train with our Level 2 Reiki Master, June Wilkinson, and she had agreed to do so.

However, an opportunity arose for us to go to the birth place of Reiki, Kyoto in Japan, and train with Master Tina Riebl and we knew it was the right thing to do and went with the blessing of our Master and dear friend June.

Our course was for 7 days so we decided to add extra days both before and after the course to ensure we had plenty of time to sightsee too.

Upon our arrival in Osaka we travelled straight to Kyoto, the traditional part of Japan, where we stayed in a hotel for a few nights. We visited the Kyoto Imperial Palace (former palace of the Emperor of Japan), Kinkakuji (Golden Temple), Kiyomizu Temple in Higashiyama (Temple of the Pure Water Spring) and many other temples and gardens.

In readiness for our course we transferred from our hotel to a Ryokan which is a tradition Japanese style inn which had a minimalist style. Our bed was a tatami mat on the floor, there was a short legged table and chairs, a deep Japanese bath tub and a small ornamental garden. Each morning we studied and later in the afternoon and evening we would sightsee and socialise.

As part of the course we:

• Visited the Fushimi Inari Taisha shrine which has over 10,000 beautiful orange Shinto torri gates.

• Meditated with monks at the Shungoin Temple and enjoyed a traditional green tea ceremony.

• Visited the Sanjusangen-do Temple which houses the mystical 1,001 Kannon gold statues.

• Shopped at Kyoto’s beautiful shopping precincts and markets.

• Attended a calligraphy class to help us practice writing Japanese symbols correctly.

• Bathed in natural hot water spring baths called onsens.

REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF 26

We even managed to watch the Wales v New Zealand rugby match in an Irish bar in Kyoto which was great mixing with local people who were keen to practice their English.

The highlight of the trip was receiving our Master level attunement with Master Riebl and climbing up Mount Kurama where Dr Usui had been enlightened after meditating for 21 days. Just 6 weeks before our trip I had an accident fracturing 1 toe with another probable fracture which made any walking practice impossible. Whilst I was worried if I would be able to make the climb, with the help of a cable car that took us part of the way, much to my delight I easily managed the rest of the climb viewing the most beautiful temples and small gardens on the ascent. We regularly stopped cleansing our hands and drinking the pure water. As we reached the top there was such a mixture of emotions.

The connection with the energy was immense and I experienced an overwhelming sense of peace and gratitude. We did a group meditation as we sat down upon the tree roots. We tested the energy with our pendulums which swung higher than ever before as we asked for answers to our questions. I then felt an overwhelming urge to sit alone so rested against one of the tall trees with my pen and notebook in hand. I then channelled a message for the group from Dr Usui which I shared.

After we descended the mountain we went to a nearby hotel where we enjoyed bathing in the outdoor onsen and the hearty meal which followed was enjoyed by all.

We said our farewells to the group and started our journey to Tokyo to visit the resting place of Dr Usui. Travelling on the bullet train was incredible and the views of Mount Fuji were spectacular. Despite an initial mishap of going to the wrong cemetery (there are 2 in close proximity with the same name) fortunately we found it with the kind help of a monk and were able to pay our respects to Dr Usui personally. As is customary in Japan we both cleaned Dr Usui’s grave with fresh water. As I meditated at the graveside I received a message for me personally which was profound. As we made our way back to our hotel we were both filled with such gratitude and love. The following day was our final day and we travelled to Arashiyama to bathe in the whistling of the bamboo forest and to maximise

our time enjoyed riding around in a ricksaw. Here we also meditated in a temple overlooking a beautiful garden which was thousands of years old. Our guide took a photograph of us from behind to capture the moment which now stands proud on our therapy room wall.

Our trip has certainly been life changing and enhanced our healing connection and ability. We are so very grateful to Dr Usui, Master Riebl, Master Wilkinson and all of the universal energies for providing us with the unique experience. We are absolutely delighted to be returning to Kyoto in April 2023 to celebrate the centenary event of Dr Usui which is being held in Osaka on 7th-9th April 2023. At this event new information about Dr Usui’s life is going to be released. Amongst many other trips on offer we are particularly looking forward to visiting Dr Usui’s birthplace Taniai. Both David and I wholeheartedly recommend going to both this event and experiencing the very special Kyoto especially Mt Kurama.

The Reiki Principles

The UK Reiki Federation prides itself on working to these principles and values.

The Reiki Principles

To bring the spiritual depth into everyday life, Mikao Usui, the founder of the system of Reiki, created a set of five principles (or precepts). They can be found on his memorial stone in the grounds of the Saihoji Temple in Tokyo. He called them...

Just for today:

Do not anger

Do not worry

Be grateful

Work with diligence

Be kind to others

Every morning and every night sit in Gassho (palms placed together) and speak these words out loud in your heart - Mikao Usui

REIKI WORLD

Why have a daily Reiki practice?

If you are new to Reiki or perhaps you have been practicing for some years, the importance of establishing a daily Reiki practice should be a top priority to improve mind, body, and spirit.

Usui Mikao’s methods to impart the teachings of the Japanese Spiritual system of Reiki, were for self-healing, healings of others and spiritual development. If we are to make any progression, we must first look to the self or ‘Omoiyari’ which is a form of selfless compassion. To care for others, we must first take care of ourselves.

When we incorporate the Reiki methods into a daily practice, we are gifted the tools and methods to access, cultivate and utilise the spiritual energy to bring happiness, peace, and self-realisation into our daily lives. Reiki may begin as a mechanical process, where we go through the motions, read our manuals and other authors on the subject but at some point, if we are open and honest in our approach, sit with the teachings in a consistent, open hearted and compassionate way then Reiki becomes a way of life. It sits within, and nourishes every cell within our being! It flows. We are transformed and the light reflected through your own heart transcends out into the world. It is at this point that you can truly heal others.

The Gokai (Reiki Precepts) themselves are the first stepping stone to the path of self-healing. It is ‘The secret method for inviting happiness through many blessings, the spiritual

medicine for many illnesses’ Usui Reiki Ryoho to improve

your mind and body.

What would a daily Reiki practice look like?

Try to be disciplined and make a contract with yourself to practice each day, perhaps give yourself 21 days to begin with. If you wish to progress and reap the benefits of a daily practice, then you need to give yourself a fighting chance to stay with it. Look at your diary for the next month and see if you can establish a set time for yourself each day that you can commit to. It will eventually become almost habit forming, like taking a shower or having a wash in a morning. Again, be compassionate to yourself and make it a practice of self-love, giving this time for yourself to self-heal.

Set yourself up in the same space each day, this could be a place in your home where you can light a candle or create a Reiki space where you have ornaments or pictures that mean something to you. Wearing the same clothes, sitting on the same chair or cushion, having the same blanket, at the same time in the same environment will take on the spiritual energy of Reiki. It sends messages to the mind, body and spirit and that sense of knowing and readiness to sit in the space with ease.

For myself a daily practice would start with always setting your intent:

• Kenyoku Ho - Dry bathing to purify the body, heart and spirit.

• Chanting the Gokai - Reiki precepts to improve the mind and body.

• Gassho meditation - To calm and focus the mind.

• Connect to the three diamonds - To balance the energy in the three energy centres.

• Ground your energy into the earth.

REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - SPRING 2023
‘...be compassionate to yourself and make it a practice of self-love...’
REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF 30

What to expect:

You will have moments where you really wish you didn’t have to practice, like it’s a chore, a sense of real resistance. Be compassionate to that sense of self, it is at this point where you will really feel the benefits after the practice. The simple act of making the effort despite a feeling of wading through mud, is a stepping stone to self-healing.

You will also experience the opposite, you may have moments of overwhelming joy or peace, a revelation or piece of wisdom enters your thoughts, the business of the mind may quieten and you’re not so distracted.

You may find that relationships with others soften, and you are not so reactive to other people’s behaviour and opinions.

There may well be times when nothing feels like it’s changed at all, like I’ve hit a wall. This is usually when the most growth is being found. Don’t lose heart, keep with the practice. It can be very helpful to keep a meditation journal, and just write a few things down each day about anything that you feel you want to make a note of and it’s at this point that you can look back and reflect upon the progress that you have made. You may also note any themes that keep coming up for you, any wisdom, or teachings.

Be compassionate to yourself, you are just where you need to be right now.

If you would like to connect with me and join the weekly UK Reiki Federation Gassho Meditation practice, each Monday 9am, for 40 minutes practice - we would love to see you online.

With love and many blessings,
