The feel of this edition is loving yourself, a state of being whereby you accept yourself fully, treat yourself with respect and kindness and nourish your growth and sense of wellbeing.

We have expanded our team at the UKRF and created three new roles. We would like to introduce Toni Hannan, who will be looking after our Branding, Shukman Willliams who is looking after our Strategy Planning, and Heather Finch who will be looking after our IT.
In addition, Claire Winter has now taken over as International Coordinator, Dipti Shah has taken over as Treasurer and Laura Barbour has now taken over from Sue Malcom as Animal Reiki Coordinator. Laura and Wendy Gordon will be at our Conference in September so do please come along if you would like to hear more about Animal Reiki.
Our Annual Conference is fast approaching, being held in person on Saturday 23rd September 2023 in Surrey. We have a fantastic line up of speakers and as the theme is Power of Reconnection, Back Together Again, we hope to see as many of you as possible. There are a few tickets left so do please visit our website for more speaker information and to purchase your tickets.
This edition sees a fantastic article written by Giancarlo Serra about the process of goal setting which we find helpful in our everyday lives, incorporating the theme of looking after yourself.
Read about Lisa Pryce Jones and David Muzzlewhite’s amazing trip to Japan to celebrate 100 years of Reiki.
Ruthie Moriaty and Alan Sanson offer us a wonderful interpretation of the Reiki principle ‘Do Not Anger’.

News from Integrated Healthcare Collaborative
85% of complementary, traditional and natural healthcare therapists do not use plastic based products in their practice, according to a sustainability survey carried out by the Integrated Healthcare Collaborative (IHC) and its member organisations.
Members of the UK Reiki Federation, and practitioners from across the complementary healthcare sector, took part in the survey to find out how sustainable our working practices are, so that we can look in more depth at our sector’s impact on the environment, and whether there are ways we can make it even more environmentally friendly.
Other results from the survey will be released, with statistics revealing a sector which has high environmental awareness, and which cares deeply about the welfare of both the planet and patients.
Healthcare professionals in our sector provide important and valued services, and contribute to the physical and mental health and wellbeing of millions of people across the UK. They are not only kind to your body, they are kind to the environment.

Distance Healing Group: Summer updates from Jo Fellows
Join
our distance healing team to benefit others (and yourself too)
We’re always looking for new members to join the UKRF distance healing team - there are 80 of us at the moment - but the more the merrier!
Hiroshi Doi suggests that the healing is amplified but the square of the number of people ‘sending’ the Reiki healing - (currently our 80 healers is 6,400 times more powerful) so if we have more members then the healing will always be amplified more. And, we not only ‘send’ healing to those that request it, but to each other too! :))
The distance healing team continues to grow, but we are always looking for new members too. The more healers we can get involved, the stronger the healing for those that request it.
If you know of any UKRF members who are interested in joining the team, please ask them to contact Distance Healing Co-ordinator Jo Fellows directly at distancehealing@rekifed.co.uk.
Distance Healing with the UK Reiki Federation
The UK Reiki Federation offer their Practitioner members the opportunity to become part of a large distance healing network...and we’re always looking for new team members!
Distance Healing Group
UKRF Reiki Practitioners give their time each week to send Reiki healing to anyone who makes a request from anywhere in the world. How the group works is that each week the volunteers receive a list of those people/animals/events that have requested healing and we all collectively send positive Reiki healing to everyone on the list, at a time that suits each one of us.
Would you like to join our team?

The Process of Goal Setting
by Giancarlo Serra
A goal is a future achievement with a timely deadline you can work towards to. We can also define a goal as a thought with commitment to make it real.
A compelling goal is something that has a deeper meaning to you. It is the kind of goal that excites you, that lets you grow and the achievement is fulfilling and rewarding.
Questions you can ask are:
• Are my goals based in loving, life-enriching intentions?
• Will my goals help to improve my life and others?
• Do my goals match my life purpose?
Ask Reiki for guidance in setting goals and you will receive inspired ideas and thoughts.
1. Get in the flow (Ground, Centre and Connect)
Our inner state of being creates our reality in this world, and therefore lays the foundation for a life in which we thrive. In order to achieve a goal you need a clear and strong intention, focused on your goal.
When we work with Reiki, we connect to an unlimited supply of healing energy, guided by the highest Divine Love and Wisdom. Working with Reiki on a daily basis enables us to strengthen this connection, reinforcing our trust and faith in the Reiki energy that will help us with our healing work.
“People who have clear written goals and who know exactly what they want to accomplish in each areas of their lives, achieve vastly more than people who are unsure or unclear about what they want.”
Brian Tracy
First you want to get into the right state to set compelling life goals for yourself. You must allow yourself to dream. There are no barriers.
Everything you manifest is the result of thoughts and emotions that you generate in your mind. Consequently it’s very important that you are clear about the quality of thoughts and feelings that surround your goals. You get into the flow when you are grounded, centered and properly connected to the Reiki source. Imagine it’s a bit like tuning into a different channel. You are raising your vibration and selecting your favourite channel. This requires a conscious effort.
When you are mindfully walking in nature, consciously wanting to connect with the energy of the earth, you are grounding yourself. You are centering your energy and bringing it into the here and now. You are connecting to the source of earth’s energy (instead of the source of Reiki).
We are immersed in the Reiki energy, but this energy flows through us when we make a conscious decision to receive it. It is the same with air, food and water, other energy sources available at the physical level: in order to use these energy vibrations, we must decide to open our mouth and drink, eat and to breathe fresh air.
Creating the right atmosphere does help to tune into the experience. Ideally you should have a quiet, comfortable and soothing environment in a designated room or area and find somewhere you will not be disturbed.
REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - SUMMER 2023
REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF 16
You can also give yourself self healing and practice gassho meditation, which helps you strengthen your auric field and balance your chakras.
2. Bringing in high vibrational frequencies
As Reiki practitioners, we have tools available for bringing in new energy of a high vibrational frequency. Allow your choice to depend on your intuition at the time and always come from a place of love and compassion and act with a sense of respect.
Some powerful tools are:
• The Reiki symbols: flow Reiki into the space, each corner, the walls, floor and ceiling. Use every Reiki symbol that you feel guided to on as many times as it takes. You can draw the Power symbol clockwise to help stuck energy become unstuck, and use the Distance symbol to track down energies within a space.
• Sound: you can use toning, chanting, bells, chimes, gongs, drums, and most forms of musical instrument.
• Smells: you can smudge, use essential oils or quintessences. You can also burn sage, cedar, oils, frankincense or other resins and wood powders.
• Air and sunlight: open all doors and windows, create currents of fresh air and allow sunlight to cleanse the room.
• Colours: use coloured light or visualise colours and light, paint the walls or use colourful paintings and drapes.
• Aura Soma: is a combination of colours, smells and a few other things and there are several space clearing options within the range.
• Room sprays: are also very effective.
• Certain plants and crystals: spider plants are apparently very effective, and there are many different types of crystals that work extremely well.
3. Brainstorm your life goals
Now begin thinking about what really excites you. Write down every goal you would like to accomplish in the next ten years. So don’t limit yourself here, get it all out onto the paper.
Decide exactly what you want. Decide what you want to achieve in your career, decide your ideal income, how much you want to earn next year, and the year after, decide on your desired lifestyle, what kind of a home you want to have, your level of health, your family situation, your weight and level of physical fitness, and your goals in any other area that is important to you.
I found that it works best if you choose important areas of your life to set life goals in, i.e. your body, mind, finances and things, relationships or spirit. Then write everything down that excites you and that you would like to achieve, to have, do or be.
Some ideas may be:
– Start your own company
– Find a mate
– Become a vegetarian
– Buy a new car or house
– Make a trip around the world or visit a certain place
– Earn a certain amount of money
– Start to meditate
– Lose weight to a certain number
– Start the exercise habit
– Find a new job

The Process of Goal Setting...continued
by Giancarlo Serra
Different ways of describing the Law of Attraction
Let’s have a look at the following quotes:
“When we write down the goals on paper something amazing happens between your head and your hand, the act of writing actually programs these goals into your subconscious mind. They then begin to take on a power of their own, attracting people and possibilities into your life.” - Brian Tracy
“Success is the progressive realisation of a worthy ideal. If a man is working toward a predetermined goal, and knows where he is going, that man is a success. If he is not doing that, he is a failure.“
- Earl Nightingale in the Strangest Secret
“Goals are like magnets. They’ll attract the things that make them come true.” - Tony Robbins
Do you find a common denominator in the above quotes?
“Nothing comes from without; all things come from within – from the subconscious.”Neville Goddard
“The action of Mind (thought) plants that nucleus which, if allowed to grow undisturbed, will eventually attract to itself all the conditions necessary for its manifestation in outward visible form.“ - Thomas Troward
“The law of attraction attracts to you everything you need, according to the nature of your thought life. Your environment and financial condition are the perfect reflection of your habitual thinking. Thought rules the world.” - Joseph
Murphy
In my opinion, Tony Robbins, Jim Rohn and Brian Tracy use a language that can be understood by the wider general public; the language used by Thomas Troward, Joseph Murphy, and Neville Goddard is more esoteric, and often can only reach a smaller audience. Certain esoteric words can put people off, and they switch off and lose interest.
Nevertheless, the message in the above quotes is the same: Thoughts are things, and they are very real. They create our reality, and attract in it people, circumstances, events that resonate with the vibration of thoughts we are sending out”.
3. Set a deadline
After brainstorming for at least 5 minutes you now get your results in order. From all that you have written down in the area and time-frame, select the life goals that are most compelling to you.
Give them numbers from 1-10 where 10 is the most motivating, that means if you reach it you really made progress towards what you really want in life.
Your subconscious mind needs a clear, forcing system or specific time target to aim at. When you set guidelines, you activate special tools in your subconscious mind, you will feel more internally motivated to take those actions that are necessary to achieve your goal on schedule.
Brian Tracy says: “You will start to see possibilities all around you that would not have seen if you had not written your goals down”. I would interpret this quote as ‘Energy follows thoughts – you will start attracting
REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - SUMMER 2023
REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF 18
into your reality synchronicities of the same frequency and vibration of your thought”. It is important to add ‘feelings’ that go with your thoughts. For example, read my article on the power of gratitude journals.
For your 3 top life goals, set deadlines to when you will achieve them. That means a specific date. This is important because it creates the tension that is necessary to give ourselves the message, that we are serious about our happiness. If you miss your deadline for any reason, set another deadline.
4. Tasks
Make a list and write down every task you can think of that you will have to complete to achieve your goal. As you think of new tasks and activities, add them to your list. Keep developing your list, until it is complete, until you can’t think of anything else that you could possibly do.
5. Create an Action-Plan
Create an Action-Plan for your number 1 goal. An Action-Plan is a specific list of actions or tasks that will
One of the most effective ways is to think from the end: you visualise your outcome as completed and think backward to where you are now.
What steps have you taken to get there? Write them down and bring them into a logical order. If you have long-term goals, that process will include parts that are not completely clear, and this is ok.
Work on your Action-Plan if you make progress and get feedback. But put thinking and energy into it to the best possible way. I found a pretty good tool in using flowcharts for action-plans, or software such as Trello.
Prioritise: What can I do first? What can I do later? What is more important? What is less important?
Once you have a goal, and a plan, you will have a blueprint for success” – Brian Tracy. Cherish your visions and your dreams as they are the children of your soul, the blueprints of your ultimate achievements”.
6. Start now and take action on your plan
If you had difficulties with this little process, then maybe there are some things to consider to free your mind, so that you really become able to use the power of goal setting to the fullest. Do something, do anything but whatever you do not delay and get started.
By all means identify the very first step to take. Now start with this first step from your Action-Plan. It is very important to do at least one step right now and start building momentum on your goal. Do something every day that moves you towards your major goal. Take specific actions that move you in the direction of your most important goal, every day. By doing something every day, you develop the power of momentum.

Our trip to Japan - to attend the event of the century!
by Lisa Pryce-Jones & David Muzzlewhite
We were so looking forward to returning to Japan in April 2023 to attend the Reiki event of the century celebrating 100 years of Usui Reiki Ryoho healing by founder Mikao Usui. Due to limited flights we had to fly to Tokyo rather than Osaka so we decided to firstly visit Disneyland in Tokyo where we unleashed our inner child. We then took a bullet train to the beautiful town of Nara where we walked amongst the sacred deer, who roam freely, feeding them deer crackers as we admired the beautiful cherry blossoms that had just bloomed, which was so magical.
We then travelled to Kyoto where we climbed Mt. Kurama for the second time (where Mikao Usui received his healing ability after fasting there for 21 days). We were so grateful to have been able to experience this again and this time was just as incredible as the first. There were a few differences - this time it was much quieter and we were able to enjoy peace and quiet on the mountain enabling us to meditate, carry out self-healing, send healing to others and also to record the beautiful birdsong which we will share with our Reiki students. We chose the alternative descent to the village of Kibune which was far harder due to the hazardous tree roots.
Afterwards we thoroughly enjoyed a hearty Japanese meal which was washed down with a few delicious plum wines!
The centenary event had originally been planned in Kyoto in 2022 but had to be delayed due to covid and the venue then needed to be changed to the beautiful and historic City Hall in Osaka. Coincidentally it was subsequently established that it also happened to be the centenary celebration of the City Hall and furthermore Einstein also delivered his famous “How I Created the Theory of Relativity” speech there 100 years ago too!
As we joined the conference there were 283 delegates representing 29 countries and the energy in the room was amazing. All of the speakers over the weekend were exceptional and we were personally particularly delighted to hear from:-
• Hiroshi Doi (Gendai Reiki Ho founder) who shared information on our Reiki founder’s life
• Emily Hayashi (president of Taniai Reiki and granddaughter of Dr Hayashi) who shared information on Mikao Usui’s early years as he grew up in Taniai until a teenager.
• The Hibino Priest of Amataka Temple.
• Olaf Bohm who shared new documents relating to Reiki and Mikao Usui (this will be shared in his soon to be published book).
REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - SUMMER 2023
REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF 20
• Dr Sheldon Marc Feldman (Surgeon and Director of Breast cancer surgery in New York’s Montefiore Einstein Hospital) shared his experience of working with Reiki Healers pre, during and post-surgery and the positive impact it has had upon the surgical team as well as the patient recovering more swiftly. It was particularly great to meet Dr Feldman in person as we had both trained with the Reiki Healer that he works with - Raven Keyes. So far we have helped clients in Wales with Reiki distantly pre, during and post-surgery but we hope in due course that we can help in person too.
• Deborah Ringdahl shared how Reiki in Nursing is bridging Reiki practice with education and research.
• William Rand (founder of The International Centre for Reiki Training) and the highest living person in our Reiki Lineage shared his Reiki journey. It was great to be able to have a chat with him and ask some specific questions too.
• Justin Stein shared how Reiki healing was given to Japanese Americans in the 1930s-1940s in Hawaii.
Additionally we were shown traditional Japanese Reiki healing techniques, we participated in a Reiki circle and had an impromptu Reiki train too! Overall it was an exceptional conference and we all left feeling so motivated to continue carrying the Reiki torch as far and as bright as we can.
We then travelled to Gifu-Hashima in readiness for the organised trip to Taniai the following day (see separate article) which was very special indeed.
A week or so later we were inspired to climb Mt. Kurama, for the third time, which was equally as incredible. Once we reached the top we brushed the dead leaves from the shrine and placed items there that we had bought in Japan to charge them with the incredible Mt. Kurama energy. This included a beautiful bell which looks like the bell which we rang mid-way up Kurama mountain and Japanese crystals along with our
favourite healing dowsers. We carried out selfhealing, sent out healing and even prepared some beautiful meditations there to share with our Reiki students in Wales.
That evening as we sat in our lovely peaceful accommodation in Ohara (15 mins away from Mt. Kurama - looking at Mt. Hiei and towards Mt. Kurama) we watched the beautiful stars with our feet up resting and really appreciated what our feet had done for us - literally climbing thousands of steps and felt so very grateful for this entire experience!
We look forward to continuing to spread Reiki in Wales. If you would like to find out more about our Reiki sessions or courses just get in touch as we would be delighted to chat further and share the beautiful Reiki energy and knowledge with you.

Just for today...do not anger
by Ruthie Moriarty & Alan Sanson
In this article we offer you our interpretation of this Reiki principle, as we all know it is almost impossible to not get angry from time to time. We explore what we feel lies underneath the emotion and give ideas for helping to handle anger and letting it go.
Anger seems to be the emotion that always has a bad press. It is one that as children, and as we mature we are told is bad, that being angry makes us not a very nice person. Yet, anger can be completely the correct response to certain situations.
A quick scenario... can you relate to this? Something happens that deeply frustrates you, which may lead to worry, which then suddenly goes into overdrive and POW!!!! ANGER – GRRRRRRRR.
Very often anger is felt to be one big negative emotion, whereas it has levels, just like all emotions. Some are justifiable, some instant and some deep and slow-burning. It is important to acknowledge your anger and decide what has created it rather than ignore it or pretend it’s not there.
What causes us to be angry? Our thought was that it is driven by your personal principles which, when they are out of kilter with something external, such as disrespect, bullying, injustice, to name but a few, result in anger. Our researcher’s investigations, (yes Alan on the scientific trail again), reinforced this finding that anger arrives “in response to some outside element, at the core of which is always emotional pain” [1].
Often anger can be slow-burning which builds up inside, gnaws away, eroding you emotionally, physically and spiritually. Anger breeds anger, it holds you back and dramatically lowers your vibration. Whichever form anger may take, we need to find ways to release it for, as healers, if we hold even a little bit of anger then that affects the treatment and flow of Reiki to our client.
Once you acknowledge and accept anger, it is time to start letting it go. Sit with it, really experience it and understand what is at its root. Where is it stemming from? Anger may well rise quickly, as it’s easy to focus on something or someone to release the pressure you feel. Yet, keep sitting with it and the REAL reason behind it will come – it may be grief/sadness/frustration/fear.
We know from experience that a very positive way to let it go is to accept that the person we feel is causing our anger may have very different values to ours and accepting that we cannot change how they are, or that the situation causing our negative emotion is out of our control. What we can change and do have control over is how we feel and act. One positive action can be to write it all down, then destroy the paper. We have found this is a very powerful way to release anger from your being, setting yourself free.
Now you can comfort yourself.
At the end of this article, we have included a link to a short movie for you, which includes these Feelmoves© to help you release and handle anger with some Qiki Gong.

Recognise and Release – make fists in front of your upper ribs and imagine your anger being held there, drop your arms backwards, swing them round in big circles to overhead then whoosh them down towards the earth with a SHOOOOO sound (the Liver sound in Traditional Chinese Medicine, your Liver being where TCM believes anger is held). Do this as many times as you feel necessary.
Let it Go – bring your hands gently to your upper ribs, ensure they are relaxed this time, then smooth down and outwards from your centre, bring your hands back to your centre line and up to where they started.
All is Well - cross your arms, hug yourself and stroke/ gently tap the tops of your arms.
Go to your “Glorious Place” for a while. This is a place, real or imagined, where you feel safe and protected, calm and at ease. You can go there simply by closing your eyes and imagining it in as much detail as possible.
We understand that letting go is not easy. It can take time and effort. Love yourself whilst you are releasing and celebrate what you are achieving.

Book Review: ‘There is a Way - The Reiki Revolution’: Torsten A. Lange
by Alistair Elliott
Review of ‘There is a Way – The Reiki Revolution’
by Torsten A. Lange
Published by ReikiScience Publications. Paperback £11.99, 225 pages
Torsten is a Reiki master, speaker, broadcaster, author and, now, revolutionary! He founded the ReikiScience Academy where he has trained over 10,000 students in his live and online courses, including me – I did my Reiki 1,2 and 3 courses with Torsten. He is also a member of the UK Reiki Federation’s management committee.
This is Torsten’s third book (see Reiki World, Winter 2021 for my review of his second book) and it is completely different from the previous two. The book has two very distinct parts: a practical work book for self-development, and a manifesto for a new world order inspired by Reiki.
The work book is a series of exercises which Torsten has based on his 31 day Reiki challenge programme that he periodically runs to help people challenge themselves to make changes in their lives, using Reiki as a guide. The exercises are all simple on a surface
level, but can yield profound insights. We can often get a lot more from a small amount of self-reflection, than from passively reading a long treatise where only our intellect is engaged.
As a flavour of the exercises, here is the one that starts the book:
‘Please sit down for a moment, close your eyes, and place your hands on your heart, one hand on top of the other. Try to feel a connection with your heart, then ask yourself: ‘What needs to change in my life for me to be happier?’.‘ I was amazed by the answer that came up for me.
The temptation with a work book is just to read it, maybe thinking ‘I’ve done all this sort of personal development stuff before’. To do that would be like buying a new piece of gym equipment, reading the instruction manual, understanding the benefits of the device, then never using it.
REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - SUMMER 2023 REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF 26
The device will do nothing for you unless you use it and similarly you will get nothing from the work book unless you take the time to do the exercises. I have tended to just do one exercise a day as I want to allow time to process and assimilate whatever comes up in the exercise. This means that although the book is not long on pages it is taking me a long time to complete it – I’m still working my way through the exercises.
The manifesto element of the book did not engage me as much as the exercises, and my comments may not do justice to it. The book’s title refers to there being a way to create a better world through the power of Reiki. The Reiki Revolution‘s aim is to create a world that is run in accordance with the spirit and principles of Reiki. Imagine world leaders having a Reiki share together before negotiations to resolve their differences. In essence it is a vision of a world where people act from love and not from fear. This is an inspiring vision and one that I’m sure all Reiki practitioners would share.
The link between the work book and the manifesto is that by working on ourselves so that we as individuals live from a place of love rather than fear, then this will have a positive impact on those around us, so that gradually more and more people will live a life inspired by Reiki. Once a critical mass is achieved this will lead to a shift in how societies as a whole are run.
Who would I recommend this book to? It is not the first book I would think of for someone with no Reiki experience who wants to understand Reiki. There are lots of introduction-to-Reiki books (including Torsten’s first book). This book is well-suited to anyone with some understanding of Reiki who is open to challenging themselves and prepared to put in the time to do the exercises which, for my money, make the book worth buying, even without the manifesto. It is also for anyone who wants Reiki to become a force for change in the world, rather than just for personal transformation. Reiki teachers may be interested in using some of the exercises with their own students, as the results can be very powerful.
I was initially a bit uncertain about the book. The production quality is like that of many selfpublished books (the front cover of my copy curls up in the air), and I felt that the claim on the cover that ‘you will experience an energetic shift with the turn of every page’ was an exaggeration, but in fact I have indeed felt an energetic shift with some of the exercises. I already feel I’ve had good value from the book and I’m only part way through, so anything further that I get from it will be a bonus.

Our visit to Taniai
by Lisa Pryce-Jones
Our visit to Taniai where Mikao Usui was born and lived until his teen years
On Monday 10th April 2023 over 150 excited Reiki practitioners and teachers, including my partner David Muzzlewhite and myself, travelled to the village of Taniai where Reiki’s founder Mikao Usui was born on 15th August 1865. This was the very place where he lived with his family, played with his siblings and friends and attended both school and the local shrine (Amataka Shrine, Yamagata-shi, Gifu Prefecture) until he moved away as a teenager.
As we travelled from Osaka, which is a built up city, it soon became apparent just how rural, quaint and beautiful that Taniai was.
As we arrived in the very small village, we were asked to walk quietly to not disturb local people. We walked down the main street, which had some very small shops along the way for just a couple of minutes before turning left down a narrow street, passing the local primary school to reach the Amataka Shrine.
We took some time admiring the entrance Torii gate followed by the second Torii gate were both made of rock and adorned with rope.
During the Reiki conference the Chief Priest of Amataka Temple - Hibino Zenbei Yoshikazu (19th generation Shinto Priest within the Hibino family who have continued the lineage for over 550 years) shared how Taniai was a vibrant village when Mikao Usui lived there with 3 major festivals annually. His birth
family were described as being very spiritual and worshipped at the Amataka Shrine. When Mikao Usui moved to Tokyo he then studied and developed personally which included work of the Meiji Emperor (2,600 years of history) including the Waka poems that we, as Reiki Practitioners, are aware of.
Horoshi Doi (Gendai Reiki Ho Founder, author of numerous Reiki books who has been researching Mikao Usui’s background since 2000 following a Reiki conference in Vancouver) also shared at the conference that with the help of the local Mayor and Historian he was delighted to tell us that:-
• The second Torii gate had been donated in April 1923 by Mikao Usui and his 2 brothers when they returned to Taniai as adults, which showed it had a special place in their hearts. On the reverse of the 2nd gate the names of Mikao Usui and his 2 younger brothers (Sanya Usui and Kuniji Usui – a Physician in Tokyo and Police Officer respectively) can still be seen.
• Mikao Usui’s father Taneuji Usui ran grocery and lumbar businesses in Taniai.
• Mikao Usui’s mother Sadako came from the Kawai family. It was said that he grew up in an economically challenged family but he was an excellent student who was far more capable than his friends.
• Mikao Usui had an older sister and 2 younger brothers.
REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - SUMMER 2023
REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF 28
•
Mikao Usui’s grandfather was a Japanese Sake brewer called Keisen who used the local natural spring water “Keisui” which was selected as the best in the area. The word “Mika” in his name Mikao actually means “a crock to brew sake”. He had intended that Mikao Usui would continue with the Sake business but he did not. Whilst his uncle continued with the business, it is no longer manufactured but the spring water still springs from rocks by the nearby temple nearby where all of Mikao Usui’s ancestors rest.
• Mikao Usui’s resting place is in the Saihoji Temple, Tokyo.
Olaf Brahm had shared new information at the conference which included photographs of Taniai in 1870 which showed that Mikao Usui attended the local school and even at age 7, in a photograph with his siblings, his presence was noticeable. Having seen these photographs made the visit to Taniai even more special as we literally walked on the same ground as Mikao Usui! Having previously climbed Mt. Kurama and paid our respects at Mikao Usui’s resting place in Tokyo it was so very special to honour his place of birth too.
To the right of the Torii gates there is a beautiful monument display. When Horoshi Doi was researching the life of Mikao Usui at Taniai he wanted to create a monument to recognise Mikao Usui’s life at the shrine even if was just a wooden post.
In 2018 with contributions from over 1,000 people Horoshi Doi and other Reiki practitioners unveiled a beautiful monument made of Mt. Kurama stone (yellow) which is only mined at Mt. Kurama. As part of the 2023 centenary event each of the 3 coach groups had a group photograph with Horoshi Doi and his wife along with the Hibino Priest of Amataka Temple in front of the beautiful monument.
As we walked toward the temple on the left was a beautiful fountain to wash your hands in, along with a pond full of large Koi Carp fish.
The Hibino Priest of Amataka Temple carried out a beautiful Shinto ceremony celebrating 100 years of Reiki and the life of Mikao Usui. As he chanted there was complete silence with lovely birdsong in the background. As part of the ceremony each of the attendees names were called out. We were also all handed a branch which we individually placed in front of the temple gate.
It felt quite surreal at this time. Whilst it was busy with lots of people around we felt that we were in a huge bubble and were filled with such gratitude and love for
Mikao Usui, and the connection with the universal energy was incredible.
As we left the temple, we all met at a nearby restaurant where we were delighted to hear further from Horoshi Doi and other dignitaries including the local Mayor and a Member of Parliament. It was announced by the Mayor that the local library will now have a section designated to the life of Mikao Usui, he would personally be learning Reiki shortly and also encouraging lots of his employees to do so too. The local MP then shared the importance of sharing Taniai with Reiki Practitioners all over the world and that to meet demand they will be improving parking in the area too. He showed us a great picture of the nearby river which was a beautiful blue, which we had spotted from the coach, and shared that it was deemed very special indeed because the sun’s ray (also known as God’s ray) shines through onto the river just a few times of the year creating a spectacular scene.
These surprise announcements were welcomed by a large round of applause. We then enjoyed a delicious lunch and as we were leaving were each presented with a protection amulet from Taniai Reiki, two beautiful photos of the Taniai Temple to commemorate this truly unique celebratory event and a beautiful Goshuin (stamped and signed paper from the Amataka Shrine).
We are so very grateful to the organisers of the event Maria Jose Fortea and her team from Gendai Reiki Ho Madrid Association. They had a dream to celebrate the Reiki centenary with people all over the world including visiting Mt. Kurama and Taniai. They started planning over 6 years ago and they delivered an exceptional event that was loved by all. Mikao Usui must be exceptionally delighted to see his work expand across the world as he looks on from afar!

Ikebana: The Japanese art of flower arranging
‘Giving life to flowers’
The practice of ikebana, also known as kado, is relaxing and meditative and can really help to clear your mind and create harmony in your living spaces. Ikebana is more than simply putting flowers in a vase; it is a way of expressing oneself through the use of flowers, branches, leaves, and stems. There are many different styles of ikebana, each with its own unique characteristics. Some of the most common styles include:
Rikka: This style is characterized by its tall, triangular shape. The main branch is placed in the center of the vase, and the other branches are arranged in a fan-like shape around it.
Shoka: This style is characterized by its horizontal shape. The main branch is placed in the center of the vase, and the other branches are arranged in a semicircle around it.
Seika: This style is characterized by its asymmetrical shape. The main branch is placed in the center of the vase, and the other branches are arranged in a free-form shape around it.
生け花
Ikebana is a beautiful and rewarding art form that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. If you are interested in learning more about ikebana, there are many schools and classes available throughout the world.
What do you need?
It is normal within ikebana practice to start with floral elements of different lengths so that the end result is simple and beautiful.
You will also need some kind of vase, pot or vessel as a base. Try to keep this a simple design so that the flowers become the focal point.
Why not give it a try?

The Reiki Principles
To bring the spiritual depth into everyday life, Mikao Usui, the founder of the system of Reiki, created a set of five principles (or precepts). They can be found on his memorial stone in the grounds of the Saihoji Temple in Tokyo. He called them...
Just for today: Do not anger Do not worry
Be grateful
Work with diligence
Be kind to others
