Welcome to the vibrant summer edition of our Reiki World magazine!
As the warmth of the season surrounds us, it’s a perfect time to explore the myriad ways Reiki can enhance our wellbeing and deepen our connection to the world around us. Summer is a season of growth, renewal, and abundant energy, and in this issue, we are excited to share articles that reflect these themes, providing insights and inspiration for your Reiki practice.
One of the highlights of this edition is Laura Barbour’s fascinating article on treating animals with Reiki-enhanced water. Laura Barbour’s insights reveal the gentle power of Reiki in supporting the health and happiness of animals. By combining Reiki with water, a universal symbol of life and healing, Laura explores a unique approach to animal care.
Ruthie Moriarty and Alan Sanson brings us back to the fundamentals with their article, “Back to the Essence of ki.” They reconnect us with the fundamental life force energy that underpins Reiki practice. Ruth and Alan’s reflections remind us of the simplicity and purity of ki, inviting us to integrate this awareness into our daily lives and deepen our connection to this vital energy.
Navigating compliance and marketing Reiki in the context of cancer treatment is another crucial topic we address in this issue. Adhering to ethical standards while effectively communicating Reiki’s supportive role in cancer care is essential for maintaining the integrity and credibility of our practice. This article provides valuable guidance on how to uphold these standards, ensuring
that Reiki practitioners can offer their services responsibly and ethically.
Kerrie Baker’s piece on “Embracing Yohaku-nobi: The Beauty of Empty Space in Reiki Practice” is an interesting exploration of finding beauty and healing in the spaces between. These insights enrich our understanding of balance and tranquility in Reiki, emphasising the importance of the empty spaces that allow energy to flow freely and harmoniously.
As we embrace the joys of summer, Lorraine Carroll’s article “Summer, Solstice and Serenity” provides soothing practices to help us harness the season’s energy for personal growth and inner peace. Lorraine encourages us to take full advantage of the longer days and warmer weather, integrating Reiki into our summer routines.
We also celebrate the collaborative spirit of the European Reiki Group, which unites Reiki Associations across borders. This collective effort fosters a sense of global community and shared purpose, allowing us to learn from one another and strengthen our practice together. The group’s monthly Reiki Meditation Circles offer a wonderful opportunity for members to connect and share their energies, enhancing the sense of belonging to a larger community.
Daily meditation, as discussed by Alistair Elliott, is a cornerstone of maintaining our Reiki practice and overall wellbeing. His tips and techniques will inspire you to integrate meditation into your routine, enhancing your connection to ki and promoting a balanced, centered state of mind.
Lastly, Deborah Mairesse’s article on supporting NHS services showcases how Reiki practitioners can contribute to public health. By offering complementary support that aligns with conventional healthcare, Reiki practitioners can play a valuable role in enhancing the wellbeing of patients and supporting the broader healthcare community.
We hope this edition brings you inspiration, knowledge, and a deeper connection to the vibrant energies of summer. Enjoy reading through these insightful articles, and don’t forget to take time to soak in the beauty of the season. Embrace the warmth, the light, and the transformative power of summer as you explore the many facets of Reiki practice shared in this issue.

The UK Reiki Federation Research Group is looking to expand the number of members in the group and find Reiki masters and practitioners who would be willing to give some of their time and support to developing research for the future.
The Research Group has worked on three pieces of research in the last two years. These have been about practitioners and their Reiki training; practitioners’ views of Reiki and spirituality; and practitioners’ views of Reiki and meditation.
We would like to move forward with doing research on clients with Reiki practitioners involved in following the research protocols and giving Reiki in line with these and we’re looking for volunteers to join our team. We will provide training in research skills and practice to ensure that you feel comfortable before starting and during the research. Any practitioner involved would be doing this on a voluntary basis.

The UK Reiki Federation (UKRF) recognises the importance of compliance in the responsible and ethical marketing of Reiki, particularly in supporting people with cancer. As the interest in complementary therapies grows, it is crucial to ensure that Reiki is presented accurately and transparently to maintain credibility and trust.
Reiki is increasingly used as a complementary modality to support individuals with cancer and those undergoing medical treatment. It is essential to understand that Reiki is not a cure for cancer and should never be advertised or marketed as such. Instead, Reiki offers a supportive function, complementing conventional healthcare practices and modern medicine by promoting relaxation and overall wellbeing.
Adherence to compliance standards is vital for establishing credibility and fostering trust among patients, healthcare providers, and the public. By upholding standards of accuracy, transparency, and professionalism, Reiki practitioners can ensure the integrity of their practice and safeguard the interests of those who benefit from Reiki.
According to Cancer Research UK, while Reiki has some benefits and can be beneficial to people with cancer, it is crucial to follow ethical guidelines and compliance standards:
Cancer Research UK: Provides information on the benefits of Reiki and its role in complementary therapy. For more details, visit Cancer Research UK on Reiki.
UKRF Code of Ethics: The UK Reiki Federation emphasises that Reiki practitioners must never claim to cure cancer. It is an offence to offer treatment or prescribe a remedy for cancer, although Reiki can be given to someone with cancer without claiming to specifically treat the condition.
The CODE OF ETHICS & PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE For Members of the UK Reiki Federation states the following:
3.2.2. Reiki Practitioners must never claim to ʻcureʼ.
4.1.2.
4.1.3.
It is an offence to offer treatment or prescribe a remedy or advice for cancer. (Please note – this does not mean that you cannot give Reiki to someone with cancer, you just cannot claim to specifically treat cancer.)

You can read the full UKRF Code of Ethics here: https://www.reikifed.co.uk/_pdf/UKRF_Ethics_Practice.pdf
The UKRF is a verifying organisation of the CNHC, therefore in line with the values of Reiki we have a responsibility to share a level of quality practice with our members. As a Reiki practitioner and as a Reiki business owner it is imperative that how the benefits and supporting nature of Reiki is communicated with transparency and in line with the code of ethics and CNHC guidance.
All individuals involved in advertising must adhere to the requirements of the Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) and the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). The CNHC Advertising Guidance states:
3.3
3.4
All those involved in advertising in any way (not just healthcare professionals) are required to be aware of the requirements of CAP and the ASA.
This means you need to make sure that your advertising meets the Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) Code. Unless you are advertising on broadcast media such as TV, the CAP Code that applies to you is the one for non-broadcast media.
The CNHC Advertising Guidance Sheet provides comprehensive information on these requirements, which can be accessed here: https://www.cnhc.org.uk/uploads/asset/file/34/Advertising-guidance.pdf

As Reiki’s value to supporting health and wellness continue to evolve through research and gain a wider acceptance, a commitment to compliance will remain essential for promoting trust, credibility, and collaboration for clients, practitioners, Reiki interested people and the healthcare community.
By aligning with established standards of practice, Reiki practitioners can position themselves as valuable allies in the broader landscape of healthcare delivery and the UKRF values and believes that compliance is crucial in marketing and personal and professional service and practice to protect consumers from misinformation and false claims.
Reiki holds promise as a therapeutic modality for enhancing overall well-being and as a practice offers a multidimensional nature that champions human health and wellness and can be used to support patients with cancer.
It’s crucial to note that Reiki does not interfere with or replace medical treatment; it provides a supportive function as it complements conventional healthcare practices and modern medicine.
As Reiki continues to gain wider acceptance and its value in supporting health and wellness evolves through research, a commitment to compliance remains essential for promoting trust, credibility, and collaboration among clients, practitioners, and the healthcare community. Just like humans, animals bodies are made up of over 60% of water and require a source of clean drinking water to thrive. We can support the health of our animal family by using Reiki to enhance the healing properties of their drinking water.
At the Medicine Pony Tribe Mustang Sanctuary we keep the herd on a combination of Track system and Equi central with shelter and water at one end of the property and grass at the opposite end connected by a long grass free track. Having the only water source at the opposite end from the grass encourages natural behaviour and movement helping to keep them fit and healthy.
Depending on weather conditions horses drink between 5 and 15 gallons of water in a day so that offers a great opportunity to support their health & wellbeing by enhancing their water with Reiki.
Water has a magnetic memory which makes it perfect for holding Reiki energy including the sound vibration of your voice when you say out loud the names of the Reiki Symbols or any other affirmation or intention, so when we use Reiki to intentionally empower any body of water it will hold that memory within each drop which can then be used to enhance drinking water for our pets (and ourselves).
There are a few easy ways you can use Reiki and water for your pets and wild life.
The simplest method is allowing Reiki to flow while holding your hands directly over your pet’s water bowl or trough every day to enhance their drinking water, which in turn, will pass directly into each cell of their body allowing Reiki to get right around the body through the blood stream.
You can also use the same technique with water that is being used to clean a wound.
My personal favourite is using a small hip flask to hold water which has been empowered using the Distant, emotional and physical Reiki symbols; I then add a drop or two to water buckets and troughs for the horses.
I like to begin a fresh batch of Reiki Water on the New Moon which will grow in strength as the moon waxes right up to the full moon where
it will hold the Reiki at full strength until I need it. I carry this flask around with me everywhere I go, and add a drop or two to water troughs, ponds, rivers and even the sea as I go about my daily chores.
You may wish to take this a step further using one of the following water prayers or even a combination; you might even have a favourite water prayer of your own:
Healing the world one drop of water at a time with Ho’ ponopono – “Water I Am sorry, please forgive me, thank you, I love you.
May these healing waters flow through the river and down to the sea - May it serve as Medicine for ALL – for You and for Me.”
One single drop of water programmed in this way can change a large body of water. This Reiki enhanced water not only heals the birds and mammals drinking from the river, and fish swimming in the sea it then evaporates from the surface of the sea and enters the air as vapor. Once saturation point is reached in the air and it can’t hold any more, the water condenses and form clouds which will eventually release this Reiki water across the land through rainfall.
With all of the rainfall we have here in the UK, think how many birds, fish and mammals including people and pets you can help with just a few minutes of Empowering Reiki with water every day.
I hope this pic will inspire you to be creative with your pets’ water.

Ho’oponopono is an ancient Hawaiian practice of reconciliation and forgiveness. The word “Ho’oponopono” means “to make right” or “to correct.” This method involves repeating four key phrases: “I’m sorry,” “Please forgive me,” “Thank you,” and “I love you.” Through this process, individuals can cleanse their minds and hearts, releasing negative emotions and fostering inner peace and harmony.

It is said that Dr Usui was under, or by, a waterfall when he was blessed with his vision, which became the Reiki we all now love and use to help ourselves and others. Maybe he went there because he knew of and felt the power of water for cleansing, refreshing, healing and giving of life. That water, along with air, can be seen as the epitome of Universal energy (ki), reflecting the flow of energy within us and the beautiful interplay of all things.
We heard in early May, that the themes for this edition were to be summer/water. Ruthie had just arrived to the hot, early summer sun in the US, where 20 years ago, she trained with William L Rand and was attuned by him as a Reiki Master Tutor. Alan had just arrived in a sunny, yet less warm, north Norfolk and was standing on the balcony overlooking the Wash watching the seagulls. All these events coming together in a wonderful serendipity, we felt compelled to write about Universal energies at play.
In this article we return to the fundamental concept that ki is energy/life-force, present in and around everything we see, touch, hear, think and even how we feel. It is free, it is ubiquitous. It shows itself in an infinite number of ways. It affects us, it is us.
We know people who are not too sure of ki, as it seems to them to be magical or mystical. We have often suggested that they can’t see air yet they know it exists, they can’t see time yet they feel its effect. It is the same with ki – just know it is present in us, around us. The more we allow ourselves to be fully aware of it, the more we reap the benefit of its presence.
Water is the Ki required by every living thing. Elephants can travel for days to find just enough water to survive, people in the hottest countries on this planet walk miles to find it. We humans are 60% water and can survive for a long time if we fuel our bodies with water. As clouds it can protect us from the heat of the summer sun and Earth is known as the Blue Planet, as water covers over 70% of the surface. How often do we feel better simply by being close to the sea, a waterfall or a river?
There is much evidence showing the wonderful health benefits from the negative ions these places contain. Negative ions are an oxygen atom charged with an extra electron. They are a necessity for human health. (1) One natural producer of negative ions is a shower. The steam produced generates negative ions and is a contributing factor to why we feel so refreshed and revitalized after taking one.
Even if we can’t physically be by water, we often remind ourselves that we can, at all times, help ourselves and others by imagining the softness and gentleness of water ki. It can help to soften even the hardest held negative feelings, it can lubricate tense situations. Our imaginations are powerful enough to do this, particularly when we enhance them by playing with a Qiki Feelmove.
Now to Qiki Play with Nature and Ki
Stroking the Qiki Waterfall. As you play this Qiki-feelmove imagine you are standing behind a waterfall, the water and the rainbows there to see and touch. Take a moment to feel that feeling. With awareness and a relaxed mind and body, gently expand, bringing your hands and arms up through the water - feeling its power. As you lower your hands stroke the water, every droplet, feel it flow through you rejuvenating every element of ki within you. Imagine now that the water is in slow-motion and repeat the feelmove:
https://bit.ly/StrokingAQikiWaterfall
Watching the Gulls. This is magical, the absolute beauty of Universal energies shines in this short slow-motion movie - the intricate interplay of seagulls in flight, water, clouds, air and music:
https://bit.ly/WatchingTheGulls
And so to Summer
If you love the long summer days and the hotter temperatures then have a wonderful time. Water ki will play its own role here too as we rehydrate ourselves, our plants and gardens. We always remember that not everyone loves the heat of summer – if this is you then keep cooler and sheltered as it too will pass. Remember though to Be Qiki.

In the hustle and bustle of modern life, where every moment and every space seem to be filled with activity, the Japanese concept of yohakuno-bi, or “the beauty of empty space,” offers a serene and profound contrast. This philosophy, which celebrates the elegance and tranquility of unoccupied spaces, can be seamlessly woven into the practice of Reiki, enriching the experience and deepening its benefits.
Yohaku-no-bi is rooted in traditional Japanese aesthetics, where the intentional use of empty space enhances the overall composition, whether in art, architecture, or daily life. This principle appreciates the silent, often overlooked spaces that provide balance and harmony, allowing the occupied areas to breathe and flourish. It’s a recognition that emptiness is not merely the absence of something, but a presence in itself, filled with potential and calm.
Reiki focuses on channeling universal life energy to promote physical, emotional, and spiritual healing. At its core, Reiki is about the flow of energy, balance, and the harmonious interplay between the practitioner and the recipient. Integrating yohakuno-bi into Reiki practice can enhance this flow and deepen the sense of tranquility and connection.
In Reiki, the spaces between the hands and the body, the pauses between breaths, and the moments of stillness are just as important as the active flow of energy. These “empty” spaces allow the energy to settle and integrate, fostering a deeper sense of peace and relaxation. By embracing yohaku-no-bi, practitioners can create a more profound healing environment.
Pausing with Purpose: During a Reiki session, intentional pauses can be introduced. These moments of stillness are not breaks in the practice but integral parts of it, allowing both the practitioner and the recipient to absorb and reflect on the energy being exchanged. This practice aligns with yohakuno-bi by honoring the beauty and significance of these quiet interludes.
Spatial Awareness: The physical space in which Reiki is practiced can also embody yohaku-no-bi. A clutter-free environment with mindful use of space can enhance the sense of calm and focus. Simple, clean lines and open areas can make the room feel more expansive and inviting, allowing the energy to flow more freely.
Breath and Rhythm: The rhythm of the practitioner’s breath can reflect the principles of yohaku-no-bi. Gentle, mindful breathing with natural pauses creates a rhythm that supports the healing process. These pauses are the empty spaces in the breath cycle, providing moments of stillness that facilitate deeper relaxation and energy flow.
Declutter the Space: Keep the Reiki room simple and serene. Remove unnecessary items and ensure that the space feels open and inviting.
Use Minimalist Decor: Choose decor that embodies simplicity and tranquility. Natural elements, such as plants or stones, can enhance the sense of calm without overwhelming the space.
Mindful Arrangements: Arrange the furniture and treatment table to allow for easy movement and flow. Avoid overcrowding the space, ensuring there is ample room for energy to circulate.
Pause and Reflect: During sessions, consciously incorporate pauses. After placing your hands on a new position, take a moment to pause and let the energy settle before moving on.
Breathing Techniques: Practice mindful breathing, incorporating gentle pauses between inhales and exhales. This can help both the practitioner and recipient align more deeply with the healing process.
Yohaku-no-bi, the beauty of empty space, offers a profound addition to the practice of Reiki. By embracing this principle, Reiki practitioners can create a more harmonious and effective healing experience. The intentional use of space, both physical and temporal, allows for a deeper connection to the universal life energy, fostering a serene and balanced environment for healing. In our fast-paced world, yohaku-no-bi reminds us of the power of stillness and the elegance of simplicity, inviting us to find beauty and peace in the spaces in between.

The wheel of the year has turned once more and long gone are days of the cold, frost bitten blades of grass of our spring misty mornings to make way for the warming, hazy days of summer. As the earth tilts its axis to favour us sun worshippers here in the northern hemisphere, the sun rises higher in the sky and we can see the first shoots of the fruits of our labour coming into full bloom.
Along with our beautiful connection with Reiki and all things nature based we celebrate our stunning solstice. At the time of midsummer there are many historical legends such as The Holly and The Oak King’s battle with each other as seasonal elementals to balance out who will win the longest day and another event that’s always a favourite to observe is to see the wondrous sun rise above Stonehenge.
Sun worshipping has become more popular over the years. I can remember over 20 years ago I was travelling around South East Asia with my then partner when we took a long walk just before sunrise along a quiet and beautiful beach when we saw a solitary figure sitting on the huge beach rocks above the sands with his hands in Gassho and then as we saw the sun rising above the horizon line, the sun rays beaming out across the ocean we saw him reach out to the sun to give thanks and to welcome in the new day. Wow! What an experience this was to see. It is certainly an amazing memory I hold dear.
So with this in mind let’s look at what we can do to ‘welcome in’ this season of summer for ourselves.
We can pay special attention to our solar plexus (Manipura) as this chakra governs our confidence, self esteem, willpower and ego. When the solar
plexus is under/over active this imbalance can cause anxiety, introversion, fear, anger, IBS, ulcers, and other gut, liver and gall bladder related issues: so let’s get balancing.
We can start by nourishing our bodies properly with superfoods such as turmeric, ginger and garlic, citrus fruits, squash, bananas and mangoes. Have fun mixing and making some nutritious smoothies to help cool you down during the summer. These foods can help soothe the transition of our food through the G.I. tract. Please don’t forget to Reiki your meals to maximise the flavours and quality of your food. The practice to Reiki our food has never been more important than now as modern farming and agriculture methods can strip away vital nutrients that our bodies need. Also, as our hydration needs will rise too, so Reiki your drinking water, it’s a beneficial ‘must’ and tastes delicious.
You can also treat yourself to a lovely crystal Reiki healing session. Some of the beautiful crystals to charge for this season are lemon quartz, pyrite, moonstone, apache gold, sunstone, citrine and of course, tiger’s eye (tiger’s eye is a great crystal as it not only benefits the solar plexus but it can also govern the sacral and root chakras too, due to its combination of hues)...a true triple healer.
Any of these crystals would be perfect to charge with Reiki to use on yourself, or to place around the home or workspace. Keeping a piece of citrine in/around your financial/business areas will be such an added boon to your future work.
If you prefer scents then you can treat yourself to a refreshing aromatherapy massage with Reiki-charged carrier/essential oils. We can also give our homes a treat with home-made diffusers. Imagine our homes smelling of the vibrant lemon balm or citronella, and to give our hot tired feet and a well prepared, cooling peppermint foot bath. You could finish that with a perfectly blended ylang-ylang or sandalwood ‘after moisture’ massage with your choice of carrier oil. Summer colds can be kept at bay with refreshing blend of tea tree and eucalyptus oils steam inhalations.
Movement for our solar plexus is very important too. Activities such as yoga, pilates, tai chi or just taking a brisk walk in the summer sun can be as rewarding and good for you as more active sports. If you do choose to exercise more in the higher temperatures of summer don’t forget to look after your skin and take necessary precautions including the 11am - 4pm ‘take shade’ rule of thumb and plenty of sun cream and up your Reiki water intake.
‘Slowing down’ over summer would be such a brilliant opportunity to reflect and conserve our energy for the right areas we need to pay attention to. We see so many people rushing around this season as soon as the sun comes out, feeling fearful that we “may not get many more days like this” when the truth is there are plenty more days that last well into autumn of hazy sunshine.
So ‘slow down’ and be mindful of your experience of summer this year. Don’t try to pack everything into a fortnight. By slowing down and taking your day ‘moment by moment’ you will soon become more mindful, and this will help you realise just how much more time you actually have got spare than you previously thought.
(Continued on page 22)
If you feel you still need help in this area then try a mindful meditation or one of the meditations given by one of our UKRF webinar teachers. I recently attended a sublime chakra clearing meditation hosted by the wonderful Amit Sihra. It was a very calming and rejuvenating experience to help cleanse and clear our chakras that can work amazingly alongside our regular Reiki self treatments.
As we move further on and deeper into the months of summer we have our first days of Lammas where we can observe the seasons first baking and breaking of bread for the upcoming thanksgiving to nature, to celebrate the natural cycle of seed to harvest. Freshly baked bread and a good quality honey is always a welcome treat at this time.
Summer will be an ideal time to do what you can to truly reinvigorate yourself and your senses by using the sun’s energy. As an added treat we can feast our eyes on the night skies with the solar flares causing some amazing northern lights that will be very exciting to see between now and mid 2025.
So what are we waiting for, let’s carpe diem and make this summertime worthwhile and to create some of our best memories yet.
*Before any changes to your diet or lifestyle please consult with a qualified practitioner to make sure these tips are suitable for you.
Love, light and Reiki blessings to you all.

When we spend time around our horses or indeed any other animals, we become comfortable with each other, our energies become more in synch, and we naturally form energy bonds with each other.
Although animals may not know the meaning of every word that we say, they certainly sense the energy connected with our words. So, when you are thinking and speaking positively to or about your animals, they feel the lovely positive energy that you are projecting towards them.
Like ourselves, animals thrive on positive energy, so even if things are not going as well as we might like, remember to take a moment to think and speak in an encouraging manner, since this is a wonderful way of lifting and directing lovely positive energy, not only towards our animals, but also towards any challenges we might be facing.
A great example is at the end of my riding lesson, when my coach says, “Tell me something that went well.” What a lovely way this is of helping to focus positive energy, not only towards ourselves but also towards our equine partners no matter how things went during our lesson.
We all know the wonderful saying within Reiki that ‘where the mind goes, the energy flows,’ and this as is true in our relationships with our lovely animals, as it is for our lives in general.

In a world where physical distance often separates us, the ability to connect and heal remotely has become a profound gift. As a Reiki Master, I have discovered immense joy in facilitating online Reiki Healing Circles, where individuals from different corners of the globe come together to experience the transformative power of energy healing.
Traditionally, Reiki sessions were conducted in person, with the practitioner placing their hands on or near the recipient’s body to facilitate the flow of energy. However, with the advent of technology, some Reiki Practitioners have embraced the opportunity to share this healing modality online, transcending physical barriers and expanding the reach of healing energies.
Even though I still love practicing Reiki the traditional way, the ability to connect with individuals worldwide through online platforms has opened up new avenues for healing and growth.
One might wonder, how can Reiki be effective when practiced remotely? The answer lies in the fundamental nature of energy itself. Energy knows no bounds; it transcends time and space. Whether we are in the same room or continents apart, the intention to heal and the flow of energy remain potent and undiminished.
Through focused intention and visualisation, practitioners can direct Reiki energy to anyone, anywhere in the world, creating a profound and meaningful connection.
These sessions are called “Distant Reiki” or “Remote Reiki” by practitioners.
One of the most enriching aspects of facilitating online Reiki Healing Circles is the sense of inclusivity and accessibility it offers. Participants from diverse backgrounds and geographical locations can come together in a virtual space, united by a common intention: to heal and be healed. This sense of community fosters a supportive environment where individuals feel safe to open up, share their experiences, and receive healing energy without judgment or inhibition.
Moreover, the online format eliminates logistical barriers that may prevent individuals from attending in-person sessions, such as travel constraints, busy schedules, or physical limitations. Participants can join from the comfort of their own homes, allowing for greater flexibility and convenience. This accessibility ensures that more people can benefit from the healing power of Reiki, regardless of their circumstances.
In conclusion, the joys of sharing Reiki healing via an online Reiki Healing Circle are boundless. From fostering connection and inclusivity to promoting personal growth and spiritual development, the virtual space offers a dynamic and transformative environment for healing and exploration. As we continue to navigate the complexities of the modern world, may we embrace the power of technology to unite us in healing, compassion, and love.
Join me in the journey of discovery and transformation as we harness the universal energies that flow through us all, transcending time and space to create a world filled with healing, wholeness, and harmony.
Thank you so much for reading.

Energy knows no bounds; it transcends time and space.
In the ever-evolving world of holistic healing, collaboration and unity are key to fostering growth and understanding. The European Reiki Group (ERG) stands as a beacon of this philosophy, providing a cohesive platform for Reiki Associations across Europe to unite, share knowledge, and support each other in their collective journey.
The ERG, which stands for the European Reiki Group, is an initiative aimed at bringing together various Reiki Associations from different countries. This union allows members to stay informed about the latest developments, projects, and local regulations that impact the practice of Reiki. By working together, these associations can promote the recognition of Reiki methods by society, local authorities, educational institutions, and health organisations.
Currently, the ERG comprises nine member associations, including the UK Reiki Federation (UKRF). Each association contributes to the collective wisdom and efforts of the group, creating a robust network of support and information exchange.
“Together we can all bring a sense of belonging to a larger community,” is the guiding principle of the ERG. This sense of community is not just about professional collaboration but also about spiritual and emotional support. Each association within the ERG organises a monthly Reiki Meditation Circle, open to all members. These meditation circles provide a space for practitioners to connect, share their energies, and feel part of a larger, vibrant community.
The monthly Reiki Meditation Circles are a cornerstone of the ERG’s efforts to foster a sense of unity and shared purpose. These gatherings allow members from different associations to participate in collective meditation, enhancing their practice through the combined energies of a diverse group. This regular interaction helps reinforce the bonds between members, offering a unique opportunity to experience the power of collective Reiki practice.
One of the primary goals of the ERG is to bridge the gaps between different national practices and regulations. By keeping each other informed about local regulations, recognition efforts, and educational initiatives, the ERG ensures that all member associations can benefit from shared knowledge and experience. This collective approach helps to standardise practices where possible and promotes the overall credibility and acceptance of Reiki as a valuable complementary therapy.
As a member of the ERG, the UK Reiki Federation plays a significant role in this collaborative network. The UKRF brings its extensive experience and resources to the table, contributing to the group’s shared objectives. By participating in the ERG, the UKRF ensures that its members are part of a broader European effort to promote and support the practice of Reiki.
The European Reiki Group is a shining example of how collaboration and unity can enhance the practice of Reiki across national boundaries. By bringing together nine associations, including the UK Reiki Federation, the ERG creates a supportive and informed community that benefits all its members. The monthly Reiki Meditation Circles further strengthen these bonds, offering a shared space for meditation and energy exchange. Together, the ERG and its member associations are paving the way for a more unified and recognised practice of Reiki, enhancing the wellbeing of practitioners and their communities.
For more information about the European Reiki Group and to participate in the monthly Reiki Meditation Circles, visit the ERG website. Together, we can achieve more and bring the benefits of Reiki to a wider audience. https://europeanreikigroup.org/
The European Reiki Group is a shining example of how collaboration and unity can enhance the practice of Reiki across national boundaries.
The UK Reiki Federation prides itself on working to these principles and values.
The Reiki Principles
To bring the spiritual depth into everyday life, Mikao Usui, the founder of the system of Reiki, created a set of five principles (or precepts). They can be found on his memorial stone in the grounds of the Saihoji Temple in Tokyo. He called them...
‘The secret method of inviting good fortune. The marvellous medicine for all sickness.’
Just for today:
not anger
Work with diligence Be kind to others
Every morning and every night sit in Gassho (palms placed together) and speak these words out loud in your heart - Mikao Usui

I find that daily meditation helps me deal better with life’s challenges. I wanted to share in this article the different elements of my current practice, in case any of them appeal to readers to incorporate into their practice.
Set-up: I start each session with no particular outcome in mind, knowing that whether I feel better, worse or the same afterwards, this practice is nourishing to my body, mind and soul and the real benefits are incremental and felt over time. I usually meditate in the early evening.
At this time of year it is just getting dark and I sit in front of a window with the curtains open so I feel a connection with the universe, intensified when the moon or stars are visible. I kneel on my meditation cushion, with just a small electric tea light in front of me as a symbol of hope, and ring my Tibetan bells three times before I begin, which immediately begins to quieten my nervous system.
Insight Timer: I use the free version of the wonderful Insight Timer app which allows me to set bells to chime at intervals, so in addition to my physical bells, I set bells on the app for the start, a third of the way through, two thirds through and then a closing bell.
Mindfulness of breathing: After I settle, I simply focus on my breath going in and out, being aware of my stomach rising and falling, until the bell marking a third of the way through.
Body scan: I then start at my head and mentally go down my body, bringing my attention to each part and relaxing it until the bell marking two thirds of the way through.
Reiki visualisation: I then imagine the gaps between each of my cells expanding. (This is something I learnt from Brandon Bays and is a wonderful exercise that can be done at any time and it instantly releases tension). This immediately makes my body feel looser and more relaxed.
I then visualise the cells moving further and further apart and as the gaps widen the intense pure white light inside becomes more and more revealed: the light that is hidden by our physical bodies but is there inside each of us, enclosed in our bodies. The cells continue moving further and further apart until they become dispersed in the atmosphere and the body is no longer there and all that is left is the white light which expands in its freedom.
I feel Reiki strengthening that light with each of my breaths, and mentally I draw the 4 Reiki symbols and say the mantra and kotodoma for each one 3 times.
Reiki share: I send the light either to anyone in particular need at that time or to the world, and sometimes use the phrases in the loving kindness meditation at my local Buddhist Centre:
May all beings be well
May all beings be happy
May all beings be peaceful
May all beings grow and make progress.
Reiki principles: Just before ending, to help give me a compass for negotiating the external world to which I am shortly to return, I repeat to myself the Reiki principles:
Just for today, do not anger
Just for today, do not worry
Just for today, be grateful
Just for today, work hard and be true to yourself
Just for today, be kind to others and yourself
For the first 2 principles, I visualise and feel the anger and worry dropping out of me. For the last three principles, I breathe in gratitude, authenticity and kindness, intensifying and expanding the light.
I rest in the light, floating, until the cells of my body start reassembling around the light, encasing it, and my body assumes its shape again, knowing that all the time the light is still present.
Emerging: After the final bell, to ease myself back into the present, I mentally count...
1…2…3…
4… beyond the mid-point
5… beginning to adjust my body
6… preparing to open my eyes
7… slowing blinking my eyes open. And slowly and gently I come back.
...this practice is nourishing to my body, mind and soul and the real benefits are incremental and felt over time.
Injury: As word of caution, bizarrely I cut the bridge of my nose one evening. I had had a very active day and whilst meditating I fell asleep, despite being in a kneeling posture on my meditation cushion with an erect back, and I fell forward and hit my nose hard on the top of the radiator in front of me. Fortunately no serious damage was done but I now sit a bit further back from the window!

At Active Lightworks (ALW), our heartfelt mission is to uplift and transform the lives of the wonderful people of Brighton & Hove (and the broader East Sussex) through the power of complementary therapies. The charity started in 2006, and it has survived thanks to the many talented therapists, trustees, accountants and supporters that have given their time to help directly or indirectly to improve people’s lives.
From 2012 until 2020, we ran a Reiki project, led by Ali Walters, at the Royal Alexandra Children’s hospital in Brighton, which made us value and understand even more how effective and supportive Reiki is, practiced alongside conventional medicine, and how it fits perfectly within an NHS setting.
Our new project is at an NHS Surgery. We opened new doors at the Wellsbourne Centre, at the Broadway Surgery, nestled in the Whitehawk area of Brighton. Here, amidst the bustling city, we found our place of solace, serving and nurturing around 2,300 patients.
Our journey is enriched by a remarkable NHS medical team led by the esteemed Dr. Anita Rajda-Bolczyk. February 2023 marked a turning point as we introduced Reiki treatments as an additional wellspring of healing alongside our patients’ ongoing health plans. Our approach is deeply personal, recognising that everyone’s path to healing is unique and deserving of tender care.
Our charity stands as a sanctuary of hope within the surgery’s walls. As patients patiently await their NHS appointments amidst long waiting lists, our compassionate team extends not only Reiki but also a nurturing space where healing, both of body and spirit, finds its rightful place. In this haven, we believe that healing is not only a destination but a heartfelt journey, and we are honoured to be a part of everyone’s path to wellness.
Through our partnership with the surgery manager, Sonia Mulla and the reception team, patients are referred to our Reiki Clinic by Dr. Anita and Nurse Jacinta Mandal. Patients receive 6 free Reiki treatments, with a choice to continue afterwards through our Maintenance Treatment Scheme and/or to be referred back into the waiting list.
Patients are also offered the opportunity to learn a self-care therapy based in Reiki. Serenity Self Care Practice is giving patients an opportunity to take responsibility for their own health and continue to build inner resilience at home.
By end of July 2024, we will have shared 202 Reiki treatments with patients; here is some of their feedback.
“I really feel that it has helped me, giving me some calmness and serenity.”
“Reiki changed my view about my body and how I am treating it. My stress levels have gone down big time!”
“Empathy and kindness shown to me was exceptional! I can’t find the words to thank you enough. Reiki has helped me through a difficult time of my life. Thank you!”
“I can think so much more clearly now. My brain feels sharper and energised!”
Feedback from patients learning Serenity:
“Since I started practicing Serenity Self Care my groin pain is gone.”
“I feel calmer and don’t overreact to things anymore.”
“I am a happier person now.”
As a therapist working in an underprivileged area of my own city, being able to share with people a whole hour of Reiki treatment, being able to witness their progress, the difference between how they arrived at session 1 all the way to session 6 is a real honour. Knowing you are giving everyone the chance to experience wellness and provide them with tools for a better mental and physical health and a better future, is an incredible feeling!
The Reiki project at The Broadway Surgery is a significant milestone in the history of Reiki in the UK. We aim to motivate other NHS surgeries to adopt Reiki in their practices. We also encourage Reiki therapists to initiate their own Reiki projects within the NHS.
If you have time to spare, if you are passionate about the future of Reiki, and you would like to contribute and get involved, please do contact us!

The UK Reiki Federation is happy to highlight courses offered by those Teacher members who have undergone the UKRF course verification process and achieved the status of an accredited course provider. Accredited courses comply with the National occupational standards (NOS) for Reiki and the UKRF considers such courses appropriate for training purposes. The directory includes courses which are suitable for Professional Practitioner training (NOS) and Practitioner training recorded as “Practitioner”. There are also courses which are suitable for CPD (Continuing & Professional Development), recorded as “CPD”.
“Professional Practitioner” courses have been checked against the National Occupational Standards for Reiki to ensure that all topics are included. “CPD” courses (members only) are those which we feel would be beneficial to Reiki Practitioners.
Please also note that this list is not exhaustive and that our Teacher members all over the country also offer training courses and you may contact any of those Teachers.

As summer graces us with longer days and (hopefully!) warmer sunshine, we have a perfect opportunity to renew our Reiki practice and connect deeply with the energy around us. On page 18 we delve into the profound concept of “Embracing Yohaku-no-bi: The Beauty of Empty Space in Reiki Practice.” Rooted in Japanese aesthetics, yohaku-no-bi celebrates the elegance of simplicity and the power of empty space. This principle encourages us to cherish the quiet moments in our practice, allowing the universal energy to flow more freely and enhance healing.
Just as summer invites us to pause and appreciate the world, yohakuno-bi teaches us to find peace in stillness and empty space. Our feature article explores how to integrate this beautiful concept into your daily Reiki practice, offering practical insights and inspiration.
Wishing you a serene and inspiring summer, and thank you for being part of our community. Enjoy the warmth of summer and the wisdom of yohaku-no-bi in your practice.
