As 2021 has drawn to a close, we have all taken the time to reflect on the challenges the last year has offered us personally and as an organisation.

Despite the challenging restrictions we saw last year, the UKRF have still taken some massive leaps forward, including a new website, new membership categories, an all-new members directory and many more virtual opportunities for our members to get together.

KEY UPDATES Animal Reiki is expanding and we have two new volunteers to join this section of the UKRF. CNHC registration – we continue to provide excellent educational support for those members wishing to gain CNHC registration.

We have a number of CPD courses advertised on our website, all of which count towards your annual 12 hours of CPD. The UKRF continues to work alongside 26 other complementary therapy originations to support the whole community and elevate the Government’s understanding of how beneficial Complementary therapies are for all, through our membership with the Integrated Healthcare Collaboration.

The UK Reiki Federation remain the only UK based organisation to be part of the European Reiki Group, which is an extensive group, representing Reiki across Europe, working collaboratively on projects.

As mentioned above, we have launched our new website and all new Members Directory and a link to upload your entry was sent to everyone. If you need any support or help with this, please contact admin@reikifed.co.uk COVID-19 The Guidelines continue to be updated on a regular basis. We do hope that members have found these

WEBINARS AND REIKI SHARES Last year saw the UKRF inviting Johannes Reindl, Paul and Susan Mitchell, Joyce Winough and Torsten Lange, amongst others, to provide our members with interesting talks and workshops. We are planning a full programme for 2022.

This is on top of our very popular webinars, provided

by Amit Sihra, our Lineage Coordinator, with topics ranging from The Language of Love to Sharing What you Learn and a host of topics inbetween. Please remember attending these forms part of your CPD. Our online Reiki Shares, provided by Jo Fellows, our Distance Healing Coordinator, have continued to be very popular and we added an additional date each month as a consequence. Going forward into 2022, we are hoping to add to these even more dates.

NEW UKRF VOLUNTEERS We had several new volunteers joining the Management Committee last year and other voluntary roles, so we are in good shape for whatever 2022 may present to us as an organistion. We will introduce them further in the next issue of Reiki World.

We are delighted to be working alongside them and the whole of the UKRF Management Committee and other volunteers.

We’re still looking for volunteers to join us in the following categories: An Events Team Coordinator, working with Samantha Metcalfe, supporting this growing part of the UKRF, arranging all the online events we are planning to hold this year.

A Merchandise Coordinator, who can source ethical and interesting products our members would like to purchase.

An IT Coordinator - Since Gavin stepped up from IT to Vice Chair, his time is now very much taken up with helping support the Management Committee so we do need someone with excellent IT skills to take over this position.

We also need a Legal Coordinator with current legal experience, preferably in Business Law. If you are interested in any of these positions, do please contact Anne-Marie chair@reikifed.co.uk We took the hard decision last year to close the Area Reps programme as we just could not see a viable way to make this section of the UKRF work effectively, in the current covid times. However, we will be reviewing this over the coming months as restrictions ease and things become clearer, to hopefully reopen the programme with clear objectives for the ‘new normal’.

UKRF Distance Healing Group With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing many to stay home, a lot of “normal” life went online. From work to social activities, much of the world now relies on online platforms to stay connected. It’s no surprise that there’s been a rise in virtual Reiki too.

For my clients we have found online Reiki sessions have been a lifeline during the pandemic and there’s no doubt in my mind that remote healing works.

If you’re still skeptical, then a pilot 2015 studyTrusted Source https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26163604/ found that people being treated for cancer who received 30-minute sessions of distance Reiki for 5 days, in addition to regular medical care, had lower levels of pain, anxiety, and fatigue. And this is being borne out by all of the thanks we receive from those we send healing to.

I’m absolutely delighted to report that our distance healing team is still growing every week!

We currently have over 90 wonderful Reiki practitioners who send out healing to all those requesting healing from the UK Reiki Federation at 8pm each evening.

I’d like to thank those kind souls from the bottom of my heart. We also set our intention that healing is also sent to other members of our healing group. How the group works is that each week the volunteers receive a list of those people/animals/events that have requested healing and we all collectively send positive Reiki healing to everyone on the list, at a time that suits each one of us.

Tools for Listening to Reiki Energy

by Dr. Duncan Cross I’ve been an Usui Reiki Master Teacher since 2000, (through a Beth Gray lineage) and have also undertaken training through the John Harvey Gray Lineage with Lourdes Gray and have had training in Holy Fire® III and Karuna Master Holy Fire® III. I’ve also been a teacher of language and communication skills, medical education and teacher training since 2001 and teach at a University in the UK. During some of my other training, we were discussing teaching and supporting the development of sensing the energy during the Reiki 1 class and also when going into practice. I brought in my experience of teaching and supporting learning using metaphysical causations of illness (metaphysics for the rest of this article) as a tool for developing listening to the energy, yourself, and the client.

Some may be familiar with this idea from Louise Hay and her books ‘You Can Heal Your Life and You Can Heal Your Body’, but I’m writing to share with the community who may not be familiar with this concept.

I also presented about this at the 2021 Reiki Rays summit.

Learning to listen to (or perceive) the energy with the hands and intuition can be difficult for many who are coming to Reiki for the first time. It can also be difficult for those who have been practising for some time but don’t know how to express, interpret and communicate what they are sensing. This difficulty can lead to lots of confusion, anxiety, and feelings of inadequacy, especially if others in a class or Reiki share are discussing sensations, perceptions, or intuitive responses. Regardless of what we teach regarding listening to perceptions or intuition, 8

some find it harder to hear or understand the guidance they may be receiving from the energy.

Also, some have an ingrained fear of what we are teaching and of listening to the energy.

Moving beyond this obstacle can Dr. Duncan Cross be tricky, but it’s important to provide a scaffold for our learners to grab onto to support their development.

One of the first things I discuss with my students is knowing when to move hand positions, which can be tricky even for those who can feel the energy. I always tell them to ask the energy, “Is it time to move on?” and go with that first strong answer of yes or no. For some, this question can be the first building block of developing their skills, but what next? For those of us who are teachers, our job is to give some direction or guidance to our Reiki students to find a way for them to process and understand what they are receiving. Practitioners may just want another tool or technique to support their development.

Metaphysics is one tool that we can use to give a framework of understanding that can be built upon during further practice.

What are Metaphysical causations of illness?

Louise Hay, in her little blue book ‘Heal Your Body’,

REIKI WORLD talks about the positive and negative “mental thought patterns that form our experiences” and how the power of words and thoughts impact us.

Those consistent patterns of words and thoughts create our experiences, with the negative repeating patterns potentially going on to cause dis-ease in the body. In Heal Your Life, Hay discusses the need to understand whether the mental cause could be true for you and to explore what may have caused those thoughts and then to release those thoughts using affirmations, as she states ”What we think about ourselves becomes the truth for us” . As Reiki practitioners, we have additional tools to support healing for clients and ourselves.

How do we teach them?

The easiest way to teach metaphysics is when we are teaching the hand positions for treatment on somebody else or when we are running a reiki share with students and want to give them some tools. Whilst we are taking the learners through a treatment, we may be talking about anatomy and what is under our hands. We can also talk about some of the emotional responses (metaphysics) that may present in the physical body as we move through the positions. For some it is better to do this during a self-treatment, as they can start to gain an understanding of what they are feeling and how it corresponds to their own situation (though they may not necessarily share what they find), giving them confidence when they then treat someone else.

I think it’s important to note that in the context of teaching, they can use this tool to develop their energetic listening skills and intuition. You may not want to go into a lot of detail about the causations. For some, this exercise will be a moment of clarity and insight into their own situation, but it might not be appropriate, or fair, to explore further in a classroom environment. I listen to the energy when teaching this technique and ensure that I’ve met a necessary threshold of understanding.

happening in an immediate area, but we can begin to piece together a more holistic story of experiences. This insight can also be achieved more swiftly through byosen scanning as you feel drawn to multiple areas before you start the treatment, which allows additional insight into the treatment and allows for potentially a more holistic response to the client.

How do we understand what we are hearing?

When we are treating a person, the body usually gives multiple sources of information that we can interpret to support the healing. Memorising the emotional causations for the standard hand positions gives your session that extra tool, but we still have to put together this information.

For example, in one position, your hands are likely to be covering the liver, stomach and gall bladder, depending, of course, on the size of your hands. The thought patterns associated with the stomach are around nourishment, new ideas and potentially fear of new ideas; the liver tends to represent anger and the gall bladder bitterness. Independently, this information might not make much sense if we have byosen scanned. However, another area may give us more information into the situation, such as the shoulder, which represents our ability to carry our experiences, and the neck, which represents flexibility.

So in this example, you might feel the energy pull to the stomach, the right shoulder and the right side of the neck. From this information, we could say that there is anger (stomach) towards a situation or responsibility (shoulder) that is inflexible (neck). There are two more things that can help us with understanding the situation.

Firstly is the side of the body or organ.

Generally, the left side represents a female perception and the right a male perception.

by Dr. Duncan Cross (Continued from page 9) So without speaking to the client, you could assume that they are holding anger about a male in their life that is not taking responsibility and is being inflexible or fixed about the situation.

Sounds simple, but there are nuances that we have to take into account. What if the client we are treating is male? Are we putting together a picture about someone else in their life, or is the anger at themselves for how they’ve handled a situation? You have to use your intuition for clarity.

How Do We Use It in Practice?

We can use metaphysics in 2 ways when we are treating or working with others: 1. To enhance our understanding of the energy and the healing the clients may be undergoing, which the example above demonstrates 2. To support and listen to the clients through conversation as they are verbalising and/ or releasing negative thought patterns that may be impacting their energetic field. This listening is not counselling.

So how do we know which one it is? Firstly, we take note of the clients. Very often if the clients are chatty when they are on the table or during the treatment, then I weave this listening practice into the session; if they are silent, I don’t use this technique at all during the treatment, as this generally signals that they either don’t want to release this thought pattern yet, or I’m not the person they want to release with/to.

We also listen to Reiki, and we trust our instincts on what we do, and if we don’t know, we ask the energy a question: “Is this for me or for the client?”

If the answer is that the information is only for the practitioner, the energy is presenting a learning opportunity and indicating very strongly that the client does not want to discuss this problem with us. When this scenario happens, I tell learners to think about what they are feeling, and if they are not sure to ask the energy a question, e.g. “Why am I feeling this?” If I get that the information is for the client, I gently test the waters of conversation, and if I’m not getting engagement in the conversation, then I stop.

Here is an example of when I used metaphysics in a session: Sam was a woman in her forties, married with three children. She had come for a Reiki session because she had felt stressed, and a friend had recommended Reiki for relaxation. Sam was unsure of Reiki and was quite nervous when I asked her if there were any areas that she felt needed attention; she was adamant that she was fine. I got her settled in and described what would happen and put my hands in the first position. There was an immediate draw of energy into her stomach. I was then able to check in energetically for areas to go to. What came through very strongly was the right shoulder and the left side of her neck.

I continued through the positions, and she was quite chatty about life generally, which gave me an opening to a conversation. I gently dropped in her reason for coming and asked what was stressing her out so much. She gave quite a vague answer, but I was able to relate to her story with an example of my own linked to anger, responsibility and flexibility (I was annoyed at my boss, for dumping responsibility on me and being inflexible about my vacation time). At this point, Sam opened up.

With three children, she was finding it difficult to

REIKI WORLD work, support her three children especially as one was going through a tough time (Shoulder), and she was angry her husband wasn’t helping her, she was tense every time he got home, and they were arguing more and more (stomach). As she talked, the energy shifted, and some of her tension started to bleed away. As she slowed down, I asked her questions as part of a conversation, e.g. “What wasn’t he doing?

Why was she doing it all? Was she asking her husband to support her?” As the conversation unfolded, it became clear to her that her husband was supporting her, and that she was shutting him out of supporting her daughter (she felt it was her responsibility only - Neck) It was her perception that he wasn’t helping because she had become so focused and fixed on one solution. She was angry at her husband for not supporting her, but it was her perception that he wasn’t doing enough.

Through the rest of the treatment, she talked and verbalised what she was going to do when she got home. When she got off the table, she was apologetic for “offloading her problems” - but she’d been so relaxed by the heat in my hands that she’d had the space to think properly, and she felt that I wouldn’t judge her. She came back several times for sessions and stated that the Reiki had relaxed her so much, and she thought it was fantastic, but she couldn’t convince her husband to give it a go.

The Reiki energy gave Sam the relaxation and healing she needed in a safe space, and the metaphysics gave me a tool to facilitate a release.

This technique isn’t always appropriate, and I avoid going into specific details about body parts and emotions. I tend to find that shared experience or story that resonates with the client gives them the opening they need to fully experience the power of Reiki.

“Deep at the centre of my being, there is an infinite well of love and Reiki” The Reiki energy is our prime teacher; we just have to learn the right tools to learn to listen to it more closely and be willing to “go within” to support our clients healing, and perhaps more importantly our own healing. Sometimes the difficulties that we have in learning to listen to the energy and our intuition are related to our own ability to love ourselves. Do yourself a favour, put your hands on for a self-treatment and re-affirm that love with Reiki.

Emotional Techniques: Into the Anger

Anger is a natural emotion. It can be the fire that fuels us. It can give us the impetus we need to instigate change and react to injustices. It can give us strength and see us through adversity, but it can also consume us and cause havoc.

stored within the body.’ They also recognise that ‘it is worth considering anger as a valuable and positive emotion’, and Walter Lubeck in ‘The Spirit of Reiki’ says ‘Anger can be a tremendously positive source of power’.

Tadao Yamaguchi in ‘Light on the Origins of Reiki’ says’ Anger hurts you and others’. Reading this may lead us to jump to the conclusion that anger is indeed a bad thing and encourage us to batten such feelings down. After all, who would want to do something that could lead to pain for both ourselves and others? Is suppression the only way?

Yamaguchi says how ‘very strong anger can be soothed with Reiki.’ He also doesn’t invite us to ignore anger or wish it away but indeed to work with it. Reiki and Chinese medicine may describe the release of emotion in terms of flow, whereas Autogenics refers more to it as something to be discharged, but all treat it as energy. They all also look to achieving balance.

Qi Gong and Chinese Medicine practitioner Daverick Legget In his book ‘Recipes For Self Healing’ says ‘Turned inwards, anger frequently attacks the joints and disrupts the body’s rhythms or turns to depression or self-destructive behaviour’. In Autogenics it has been observed that clients presenting with various health issues often carry repressed anger. Clearly suppression is not without its dangers.

Looking at how other techniques and methodologies approach anger puts anger in a wider context and is useful in returning to how we can look at it in a Reiki context. Viewing anger as something positive may not be what initially comes to mind when reading the first Reiki principle ‘Do not be angry’ or ‘Do not anger’. It seems to offer no way of dealing with the anger we all naturally feel. But when we come from a place of accepting anger as part of life, as part of our experience, it opens up this principle.

Also, as already outlined, anger is a natural emotion. If we deny anger we deny part of ourselves, invite different health issues and lose access to its strengths and potential. If anger is natural then it is part of life, and must be worked with. Legget describes anger thus ‘This natural assertive and creative force becomes damaging when it is chronically obstructed’. This statement reflects both anger’s positive and negative aspects, and the need to work with this emotion rather than try to deny it. In Autogenic Therapy- Self-help for Mind and Body’ authors Jane Bird and Christine Pinch say ‘if never allow ourselves to express anger, the impulses are not discharged, but are

We can interpret it as not allowing ourselves to become our anger. Do not be angry,but try to reach a state where we accept the anger, acknowledge it, but we are not the anger. Anger is a feeling, an emotion, not who we are; it is a temporary state. When we identify ourselves as anger, it becomes all-consuming and offers us no way out, no opportunity of achieving balance. When we take that step back, view it as an energy flowing through us, it becomes something we can work with and harness.

REIKI WORLD A useful technique to try during a self Reiki session is, if we are aware of carrying anger within us, or even if we’re not and assume we are calm, is to ask our hands to guide us to any areas of anger there may be, to make this our intention. If you are more used to working with set hand positions this can be a bit daunting at first, but I encourage you to try it. If letting your hands be guided to the necessary area really doesn’t come naturally to you, another option is to rest your hands comfortably on your lap, palms down, trusting the Reiki to flow where needed and observing any feeling of anger that may arise.

or reveals more than was first apparent. Again, don’t try to consciously change it, but work with the intention that Reiki will guide the anger in the manner that is right for you.

It can be interesting to see where the Reiki guides our hands to, which may not be where we would expect. The aim at this point isn’t to channel the anger, to encourage it to flow or try to consciously work with it, but to be with it. Observe where you feel it, if it comes with colours or sensations or a shape. Don’t try to interpret anything you may experience; take the role of neutral observer.

See if the anger changes, settles, starts to move,

Whether viewed from a Chinese medicine, Reiki or Autogenic perspective, anger can have both a positive and a detrimental effect on the body and mind. Therefore it is a fuel that needs to be used judiciously. Because as much as fires can get out of control, they can also carry us forward and create room for fresh possibilities to grow.

The causes of anger are many and varied, and beyond the scope of this article, and sometimes can be unexpectedly powerful and difficult. If this is the case with you and you find yourself feeling at all overwhelmed by the experience it is worth seeking out ways of supporting yourself beyond Reiki. This can include exercise, rest, or counselling, for example.

Book Review - Proof of Reiki, Proof of Eternity - Torsten A. Lange

by Alistair Elliott Torsten Lange is a Reiki master, founder of the Reiki Academy London and a member of the management committee of the UK Reiki Federation. This is Torsten’s second book and, full disclosure at the start of this review , I should mention that I trained in Reiki with Torsten.

This is a very unusual book about Reiki and unlike any other that you will have read. It could be titled Adventures in Reiki. It is a brave, frank book, giving a deeply personal account of the author’s life and how he came to Reiki, and has developed as a teacher, and culminates in him sharing spiritual teachings.

It is a book of journeys: of travels in the spiritual and the physical worlds. The book is divided into three distinct parts – London, Japan and the Universe – reflecting Torsten’s journey. In fact, as Torsten’s name suggests, he was born and grew up in Germany, and for the first 30 years of his life, everything went well. He was a successful student, became an entrepreneur and built up a chain of shops selling silverware and antiques, coming to London to open a shop in Regent Street.

Guided by his intuition, Torsten made two visits to Japan, and had many adventures, including both disappointments and revelations. He investigated the history of Reiki, visiting key locations in the life of Mikao Usui, including the memorial stone on his grave that tells his life story.

Torsten paints a vivid picture of the life of Mikao Usui, including his political and business careers before, as the memorial stone states, ‘he fell into great difficulties’ and ‘one day, he climbed Kuramayama and after 21 days of severe discipline without eating, he suddenly felt One Great Reiki over his head and attained enlightenment and he then obtained Reiki Ryoho (the Reiki Method)’.

Then the economy changed, his core market disappeared and Torsten lost everything - his business, his home and his hope. He stumbled across Reiki and credits it with saving his life.

After initially using it as a tool to get his life back on track, Torsten set up the Reiki Academy based in Barnes in south London, where it remains to this day, having trained thousands of students.

Torsten himself recounts his own experience following Mikao Usui’s footsteps up Mount Kurama and explains his special bond with Mikao Usui.

The final section of the book has a very different feel, moving very much from the personal to the universal and Torsten shares his insights about the science within Reiki, the link between the three Reiki symbols and the three tanden points; the major energy centres in our bodies, and ultimately Reiki as a way of understanding our connection to the Source of the universe, and also how Reiki is proof of eternity.

This book is not the recollections of a man at his journey’s end looking back nostalgically. The author shows himself to be a seeker, whose

At the end of the book Torsten reveals that he is currently based in the USA, and looking to fulfil his mission to bring Reiki to more people, and bring about a Reiki Revolution – the latter being the name he has already decided on for his next book.

Who should read this book? The book is relevant for anyone with an interest in Reiki, from Reiki masters to people with no knowledge of Reiki. It will surprise, entertain, inform and challenge, but also inspire and encourage people to see a new way of looking at Reiki and its potential both for themselves and for the world.

Does the book give proof of Reiki and proof of eternity?

Torsten sets out his case including laboratory results of controlled tests showing the impact on water crystals of Reiki, of the symbols and of the kotodamas, and it’s for each reader to assess it. As Torsten says, ‘confirmation is often very personal’.

Cleansing with the Cheeky Pair

Cleansing has such a positive impact for those who enter our treatment space offering feelings of harmony, calm, a sense of safety and love. We all have our own special and sacred rituals when cleansing our homes and treatment areas, maybe using smudging, crystals, diffusing essential oils, as well as Reiki. In this article we offer you a wider perspective, extending from the practitioner, to the treatment area, to the spaces beyond and the spaces between the spaces - with *QiKi-feelmoves to enhance your cleansing toolbox.

We wondered though - why does cleansing have this effect? So we sent our investigative team (aka Alan!) to see if he could find any possible “science” to lend more weight to what we instinctively know.

Lo and behold he came up trumps with Happy

Molecules (1). To summarise in our own words, quanta, molecules and the like, could be considered to be “free flowing” in time and space, until they get caught up with others and become part of “things” that are more fixed. They can become stagnant like water in a pond that has no flow, or dust that sits on the shelf (as if any of us have that!).

When cleansing your aura, mind, body, your treatment area and spaces beyond, imagine you are freeing the molecules/energy to ‘Be happy’, smiling, In-Joy, free-flowing and unrestricted. The power of Imagination is immense. With the power of Reiki and your imagination you can cleanse remote places, people, animals, anything when you perform distance or past or future Reiki sends.

Your total intention being to cleanse yourself, your treatment area and beyond. Visualise being grounded through your Earth Star Chakra, beautifully balanced through your central chakra line, up to your Soul Star Chakra and beyond to the Cosmos. Your intention magnifies, asking for the purest, highest QiKi vibration to flow through you and out, for light energy to transform any negative/stagnant energy, or for it to be directed down into the Earth for transformation. The music itself adds clear, positive vibration and fills the spaces between. Move to your own rhythm, or to that of the music, in perfect harmony with Universal Energy.

Questions from a Reiki student An Interview with Leo Maria Holmes This is a great insight into how to answer questions about Reiki when teaching or just spreading the word. I hope you find it useful.

Why is Reiki sometimes called light healing?

I practise Usui Reiki founded by Mikao Usui who, after 21 days of meditating and fasting on Mount Karuma, felt a connection to the light - the source of everything.

He said he saw nothing but light - the highest vibration of all and this is why Reiki is sometimes referred to as light healing because the practitioner is facilitating a connection to that light for the recipient.

Why is it that during the attunements and after the course I felt so emotional?

Reiki is taught in a different way to most other healing techniques because it is transferred to the student by the Reiki Master during an attunement process. This initiation creates a link between the student and the Reiki source. The Reiki attunement starts a cleansing process that can be felt in the physical body, mind or emotions with some students reporting increased clarity of thought and intuitive awareness. Toxins that have been stored in the body may be released as well as feelings and thought patterns that are no longer useful. Most people involved in this sort of work will say that healing involves a shift in consciousness and this is exactly what happens during a Reiki attunement.

Because we are all unique, students will be affected in different ways but it will be exactly what is needed for that person at that time.

It seems that whether consciously or unconsciously most of us are very good at avoiding difficult or painful feelings. Excess use of alcohol, technology and being overly busy are just a few of the distractions we use to avoid and/or deny the pain of what is really going on with our feelings and in our relationships. During the attunement, when we receive the connection to Reiki in an atmosphere of peace with no distractions, suppressed feelings may surface. Following the attunements there is a period of adjustment during which this process may continue. This can be 22 REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF

uncomfortable and is sometimes very painful but tears are a release and working in this way, with awareness, can free us to move forward. At this time, some find it helpful to have the support of psychotherapy. I don’t believe that there is a quick fix or that you can spiritually bypass the inner work.

Can you give a science-based definition of how Reiki works?

There is no doubt of the existence of an energy field that emanates from the body as we can now photograph it and quantum entanglement explains why distance Reiki works. I won’t explain quantum physics here, mainly because I don’t fully understand it myself! And, although the science is interesting, we don’t really need to understand Reiki at mind level as it is experiential. Many have had the experience of thinking about someone they haven’t been in contact with for years, seconds before they telephone. In ‘The Divine Matrix’, Gregg Brayden expands on this interconnectedness.

The Reiki Academy London run a Reiki Science course which is based on Torsten’s scientific experiments with Reiki and water. Given that the human body is around 70% water, the implications of this are extraordinary. What advice would you give to someone who is starting their journey as a Reiki practitioner?

Get as much experience as you can - practise, practise, practise on any willing being. Don’t ‘try’ to feel the connection or control what happens with the mind because the energy will go just where it is needed. I think it’s important to have the humility to remember that it is not us doing the healing, we are merely the conduit and that we are there to help others, not to bolster our own egos when we get good results.

On a practical level you can start as a freelance practitioner where work usually comes from personal recommendation. The other option is to work from a clinic where they will advertise your work and provide clients. Whichever way you choose, it’s really a matter of building up your client base at a speed that works for you.

How do you know if and when you connect with Reiki?

Just follow the process you learnt during the course; the connection is there whether you feel it or not. Initially, some students don’t feel the sensation in their palms but the recipient does feel something. This also changes as we work on our own energetic blocks. I believe that the clearer we are in our own energies, without being self-obsessed, the better the practitioner we are … we don’t want to be unconsciously using our clients to fulfil our needs. Alice Miller in ‘The Drama of the Gifted Child’ explains this perfectly: “Not only as parents but also as therapists, we must be willing to face our history. Only after painfully experiencing and accepting our own truth can we be free from the hope that we might still find an understanding, empathic ‘parent’ - perhaps in a patient - who will be at our disposal.”

How do you know if you can do Reiki, or can anyone?

Yes, anyone can do Reiki but meditation helps us deepen the connection.

From an ethical perspective does Reiki help in any way with environmental issues?

Well, that’s an interesting question and I can only speak from my experience. Many come to Reiki for relief from pain and other physical symptoms. Sometimes after just one treatment and sometimes after a course of treatments, there is no longer the need for pain relief medication and under supervision of their GP, other medications are often greatly reduced or discontinued. We have to remember that we are not medically qualified and that we must never attempt to diagnose or make suggestions about medical treatments. The changes that the client experiences are for them to discuss with their health care provider.

So, you could say that the environment is benefitting from Reiki because the reduction of medications, from the manufacturing process, emissions into the sewage system from human consumption through to disposal of unused medicines, is paramount. our Reiki community and we, at the UK Reiki Federation, love to hear from all of our members and to read stories and articles about your experiences.

We are proud to include a wide range of subjects from stories of discovery from our members to scientific articles relating to Reiki and associated practices. We hope you enjoy them all.

Please send your interesting articles and stories to us at publications@reikifed.co.uk together with your membership number, by email in a Word document. Articles always look better with accompanying pictures, so please include photographs and artwork as separate attachments to go with your articles if possible, and please ensure that you have permission to publish any photograph from everyone in it. All images must be high resolution (300+ dpi), and suitable for printing. All our members receive an e-magazine.
