Many students are applying, and they should have their passports ready, on the condition of no failing grades. Soriano also added that the student must also be hard-working and diligent to be qualified, since they would be working with people of distinct nationalities.Students were sent in farms located in various towns of Israel with different fields of specialization. Some of them were assigned in dairy, poultry, crops, orchards, and ornaments. The on-the-job training in volves learning the techniques in Agricultural farming, wherein the students engage in an actual work in an average of 10 hours that varies depending on the num ber of orders. Miss Jeanalyn Dungca, one of the stu dents who were sent in Israel, said that most farms use drip irrigation since the water supply is insufficient.

“It’s an advantage since it reduces the cost of farming,” she added. This is because watering the plants is a lot easier for they would not need them to water one by one, since this technique waters the plants directly to the roots. Dungca also stated that this technique, together with all the knowledge they will acquire will be shared to those students who were not able to go in Israel, as well as to the local farmers to improve their yield.

Considered not retroactive, sophomores and old students will still use the old grading system. As per the requirement of the BOR, a review will take place after its one-year implementation. Proper dissemination to all freshmen about the new grading system is expected not only in College and University orientations but also inside every classrooms. More so, colleges are required to reiterate this matter during PTA meetings.

The modification of the grading system is said to be part of the “innovation platform in the academic services”, which aims to re-align the grading system with other universities and to harmo nize in the PSAU’s campaign for internalization.

The department said it is yet to be seen whether the policy changes will be a lift to the professors, training and instructing practical lessons to the CHEFS students.

Government agencies are now silently pushing for pork. JC Punongbayan, a resident political analyst of Rappler Ph stated that lawmakers are trying to push for pork. According to Rep resentative Joey Salceda, the 2020 budget plans to allot P100 million for each House representative in pork-like projects such as infrastructures (P70 million) and educational and medical assistance programs (P30 million).

Recently, the Office of the President approved the National budget proposal of P 4.1-trillion. However, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) working under the RA 10931 (Uni versal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act) had a cut from P52.4 billion (2020) to P40.8 billion which is 20% lower than this year.

changing.Admit it or not, I know you have thought of engaging in ac tivists’ agenda as means of tak ing actions. But its real essence comes simply as starting from the bottom. We can all speak when we feel like choking, we can all scream when we feel like getting silenced, and we can all breathe when we feel like drowning. We do not just conform in how the world is trying to mold us.

Intelligence funds are essential as mention in perceiving threats against the government that performs its duty in taking care of the people’s welfare. With the rise of communist propa ganda, it is a must to take good look after the President in cases of opposition.Anamount of P4.5 billion intelligence funds are for a fact way less enormous than the CHED budget allocation to support the free tuition law in the Philippines. Yet there is no point in figuring which is bigger as both plays an important role in the country. The breakdown of the P4.5 billion funding is vague as to where it will exactly go.

now I have stood my ground and developed ways on how I can make myself catchy during discussion. I have always been a perfect direct object of the term “pabibo”, and that for me is offensive. It lowered my self-esteem and confidence which I have worked hard in my past

I’m telling you but a story of dealing with structures and toxic norms that we are fac ing. The lack of empathy and the ability to engage in serious discussion boils down in our culture of fond in taking short cuts and not getting too deep. We don’t want to hear another perspective as it is conceived as “notandimportant”tootechnical. This in a way...

As a result, CHED is compelled to strictly manage their budget effectively notwithstanding all the scholarship programs they offer. With this, CHED would have to slice off a total of P7.1 – billion from the original plan of funding. Worst is that, over hundreds of thousands of students are to experience “forced va cation” as the beneficiaries of the Tulong Dunong Program will not receive any support for the coming year.

They say that the skin is very sensitive to stimuli. The change in temperature as an example sets the skin to react and have our skin hairs to go up when it’s cold to close our pores, and down when it’s hot to allow air to get in and sta bilize our body temperature. This simply implies that sensi tivity requires action. It doesn’t end by knowing the story, it is in a radical sense and life

A total of 80 percent of the 2020 appropriations will go to the UAQTA implementation. However, Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto said that a huge part of this is the Tertiary Education Subsidy (TES), which would be used to fund 708,993 beneficiaries in five major assistance programs. This clearly jeopardizes the future of many Filipinos considering that before it was implemented the President himself says “I don’t know” in response to how it will be supported.

According to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), the economy grew at a dismal 5.6% in the first quarter of 2019 – a negative indication of down slope of how Filipinos suffered from this term considering that the target of the government is between 6% to 7%.

ensitivity can be per ceived in a variety of ways and yet here we are getting soaked on the shallow misconception of this term. We tend to cripple and get this negative feeling whenever we are branded as sensitive, or worst oversensi tive. It has been a mindset that we have cultivated for years and now it has been cement ed as a bad trait that we might possess.Do you know how every Filipino farmer has been suf fering from the recent imple mentation of Rice Tarrification law? Do you know, so well, why SOGIE Bill is getting so much attention these days? Have you heard of our President, Rodri go Duterte spilling rape jokes in front of the camera? Do you know how much climate change related dilemmas we have right now? A lot are to be asked, but do you know much about how the society is in deep Hypothetically, calamity? you an swered yes, and what now? Is that enough to call one self sensitive?

With this, it is unsettling to think how the government will keep up with its intent to provide free education for all Filipinos longing to get a degree amidst this economic limitation. Taxes fund this law and with misappropriation of funds, lies the adver sities.

Free tertiary education has been included in Dute rte’s priorities for his term which drew positive re marks from the Filipino mass, particularly those who can’t afford education. However, how far can it go?

Having 299 members in the House, this will yield to an amount of P29.9 billion. The almost 30-billion peso worth of services and assistance will be used to uplift the lives of many Filipinos especially the students who will be affected from the budget

While being underfunded, the President demanded during the national budget proposal an increase of funds for its own office (Office of the President) of 80% for its confidential and intelligence funds from P2.5 billion to P4.5 billion. The palace pointed that these funds will be used to “secure the nation”. Very likely, these funds will be used to get into perceived threats.

Worrisome as it could be considered for this moment in showing the potential of getting disrupted because of budget misallocation. The country needs transparency and receipts of change from spending the Filipinos’ hard-earned money.

Initially, funding almost hindered the bill to push through. Despite constraints, the bill was enacted into law which now benefits the students of over 114 state and local universities and colleges. However, “forced vacation” for beneficiaries is slowly creeping by 2020 as a 20 percent budget cut is threatening a jab at the Commission on Higher Education.

Various govern ment institutions and private businesses went hand in hand in informing the people that pork is still safe to eat as long as it came from reliable sourc es, but still a huge number of people still avoided buying any pork products on our market.

First of all, there are existing laws against discrimina tion in our country that safeguard the right of every citizens against discrimination like the Civil Code of the Philippines, Anti-Sexual Harassment Act of 1995, and the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Lots of poeple are be ing discriminated because of their deformities, disability, dif ferences in color, but do we need an Anti-Discrimination Act for every single one of those? No, because these existing laws ensure that any form of discrimination is avoided. So, why pass another bill that protects the members of their community against discrimination when there a lot prevailing protecting the entirety? Are they aliens to be not included in those rights? In addition, we don’t need SOGIE Equality law because

Filipinos are naturally accepting of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders; our society is tolerant of LGBTs. There are many well-known Filipino LGBTs who brought glory to our country and are very successful in their specializations like in business, media, education, fashion, arts, politics, etc. One of the major breakthroughs of their community is when Rep. Geraldine B. Roman became an honorable rep resentative of the first district of Bataan in 2016, becoming the first openly transgender woman elected to the Congress of the Philippines. The Philippines has also been recognized as one of the gay-friendly countries in the world and sec ond most gay-friendly country in the Asia-Pacific region. LGBTs are loved and accepted over the country; with many serving as the breadwinner in their respective families. Lastly, when these proposed bills are passed into law, they may be used as instrument to contravene our rights and freedom of religion. There are a lot of possible scenarios when these bills will be approved: What will happen to parishes and Catholic universities that will not allow or recognize LGBT or ganizations in keeping with their mandate to abide by Church doctrines? What will happen to “all boys” or “all girls” Catholic schools that will not accept transgender children as students because this would go against the catechism they teach? To the Catholic or Christian offices or companies that will not hire LGBT employees because it will violate their faith-based beliefs? The bills may be used to take legal actions to those who’ll not give them the equality that they desire. The penalties for those who will commit the discriminatory acts ranges from 100,000 to 500,000 pesos and/or imprisonment of not less than 6 months or 12 years maximum, depending on the of fense committed. But still, we cannot expect everyone to change their doctrines and beliefs to accommodate a law that will violate their rights to practice their religion and beliefs. We, people, have different types of needs and strug gles while we are living. The rights that are given to us will never be taken. There are limitations in each situation. SOGIE bill will never be equal; it will not promote equal ity but instead, will give ‘special’ rights to some mem bers in the society at the expense of the right of the oth er members and to the social order in our community.

The said account is profoundly observed in particular class settings where there are students who struggle in linguistic-related activities or speaking examinations but perform outstandingly in other learning areas. And what really saddens me is that people think its sad dening that we are behind the achievements and accomplishments of others.

Also, speaking the En glish language in an articulate manner is not the sole founda tion of intelligence but certainly, an indication of one’s heightened confidence. A lot of times, we say yes out of peer pressure, or social pressure to conform. How many times have we said yes after being told “makisama ka naman”, or “walang pakisa ma”? How many in the work place have kept their mouths shut to the corruption out of “pakikisama”?Oftentimes, despite hav ing said “No”, the more dogged ones use go-betweens – a rel ative, a close friend, a boss to get their way. At times, we get an invitation we cannot re fuse. Clearly, be very careful on owing favors, especially the ones that can never be re paid or people who don’t treat favors as being repaid ever.

All of these work against assertiveness. In general, Fil ipino culture is predisposed to be conformist instead of individualist/assertive. The problem is – this conform ist attitude can cause a lot of strain. Saying yes for the sake of saying yes, without think ing through whether “YES” is the correct answer can cause complications. For example, out of “pakikisama”, one says “YES” to attend a picnic BUT does not show up because of prior forgotten engagements. The correct answer should have been “NO, let me think about it”.

It is a viral disease that originated in the wild boars of Africa. That re-emerged in China on August 2018 and as of today has already infected 21 countries in the world. The disease can only infect wild and domesticated pigs with a mortality rate of 100%.

The disease is not harmful to humans, nor other animals. However, humans can be transmitter of the disease through direct contact with infected animals and through fomites.

ASF is often mistaken similar to the swine flu. However, Swine flu is caused by Influenza virus which produces respiratory symptoms. Meanwhile, ASF virus causes hemorrhagic fever in pigs. Symptoms include hyperemia (reddening) of the ears, abdomen, and legs, along with respiratory distress, vomiting, bleeding from the nose and rectum, and sometimes diarrhea.

In 2017, the Philippines was burdened with the Avian flu where 73,357 birds died and 407,840 were culled in Pampanga and Nueva Ecija. Aquaponics takes hydroponics one step further. Aquaponics uses a combination of aquaculture (raising fish) and hydroponics. It is a closed-loop system that uses fish, prawns, snails, or cray fish as a symbiotic addition to the hydroponic cycle. The aquatic animals supply nitrogen and carbon dioxide for the plants and, in return, the plants feed the aquatic animals.

Traditional agriculture, while flawed, does one thing well--it produces large quantities of food. But would it be enough if there will be more than 134 million mouths to feed in the country by the coming years? Not just having population growth but many other knots in the country’s agricultural sector to be disentangled.

With the coin of vantage of these three, possibly it would be perfect if the State will provide funding to ensure that the players in these systems have a fighting chance at proving their worth. Be it that these systems can produce an impressive amount of produce in small spaces, urban spaces, and even in outer space!

Yes, an impending food crisis is a real concern in the country, but these techno logical feats in agriculture give us tangible hope. It’s true that we have reached a crit ical point or we are on our way there, but we can take solace in the fact that humans are doing remarkable work in the agricul tural industry – locally and beyond.

In the last twenty years, innovations like hydropon ics, aeroponics, and aquaponics have emerged. Using less space, less water, and little-to-no natural sunlight, these methods of producing food have redefined agriculture.

alternatives WORDS BY JOBELLE L. WAJE

HYDROPONICS

d11Sinukuan Gazette VOL. XXXV, ISSUE NO. 1 THE OFFICIAL STUDENT PUBLICATION OF PSAU AUGUST - OCTOBER 2019

Using aeroponic technology, researchers discovered the yields of plants grown were more than 30% larger on average. For example, red kale had a 65% increase, bell peppers had a 53% in crease, cucumbers were 7% larger, and squash 50%. Both aeropon ic and soil growing methods produced comparable nutritional value.

Many experts, environmentalists, agriculturists, and politicians have come up with different solutions that tackle the issue on the Philippines’ level of food security— one of these solutions is called “urban farming”.

Therefore, urban agriculture being recognized in the legislation would be a fantastic news as climate change and generations of over-farming have left our soils rav aged. Soil degradation, coupled with population density and water scarcity, is the perfect storm for a global food crisis.Due to huge demand on water resources and sub sequently food supply, many new trends in the farming innovative methods which include a complex agricultural production system have evolved.

The main advantage of these modern cultivation systems is the conservation of water and less or no use of agrichemicals which are dangerous to the hu man body when applying and especially when eating in the food.

Hydroponics, aeroponics and aquaponics are types of organic, ecologically responsive and maintainable farming. These agricultural farming systems could be one sustain able alternative to provide different type of produces that it requires less water, less fertilizer and less space which will increase the yield per unit area.

ithout any question, agriculture plays an im portant role in the growth and development of a country. Having an agricultural industry allows a country to produce its own food which, therefore, does not necessitate the need for the trade and importation of goods from other countries. In short, agriculture allows self-sufficiency of a country in terms of its food supply and other agricultural products.

In a hydroponic system, a plant does not need an extensive root system because it does not have to expend energy seeking nutrients as it does when grown in the ground. A smaller space allows the plants to be concentrated, allowing more production. Most crops can be grown hydroponically, but the most common are leaf lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, strawberries, wa tercress, celery and some herbs.

AEROPONICS Growing in mist

Aeroponics is the growing of plants in an air or mist environ ment with no soil and very little water. It can reduce water usage by 98 percent, fertilizer usage by 60 percent, and pesticide usage by 100 percent, all while maximizing crop yields. Plants grown in the aeroponic systems have also been shown to uptake more minerals and vitamins, making the plants healthier and poten tially more nutritious. Aeroponics systems are frequently em ployed in an enclosed environment like a greenhouse so that the temperature and humidity can be accurately regulated. Although sunlight is the principal light source, some additional lighting such as LED lights may also be added.

As with traditional growing methods in soil or the conven tional farming, a lot of space is required. The problem is that we have less and less of it, and we are losing about 3,000 acres of farmland to development every day. Because hydroponics, aero ponics and aquaponics do not use soil, they can be established indoors in locations that have clement climates. These growing methods can also be used in localities that have poor, sandy soil. By now, maybe these systems may be taken into consideration as ways to feed our growing population.

Water as soil

Agriculture is the “art and science of cultivating the soil, growing crops, and raising livestock”, and it also involves the preparation and distribution of plant and ani mal products for consumer use. Through its definition, the certainty of the importance of agriculture in reinforcing a community’s food security is, therefore, established.

Plant+Fish

In this system, producers grow both plants and fish in a closed system where it allows produce to be grown locally, leaving the natural ecosystems unaffected.

PONICS: WHICH VIES FOR THE TOP SPOT IN ALTERNATIVE GROWING SYSTEM?

Hydroponics means growing without soil, using water with nutrients instead. It is noticeably better than conventional farm ing methods since the basic requirements of a plant are few— water, sunshine, and nutrients.

The Philippines with an estimated population of 103, 375, 012 and annual growth rate of 1.9% remains to have agricul tural-based economy. Agricul tural Education in the country is institutionalized through the 110 State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) and the nation al university (University of the Philippines) that were created by Acts of Congress. However, of the three million students en rolled in higher education, only 2.8% are enrolled in agriculture, forestry, and fisheries degree programs. Some of the reasons for decline in agriculture are: (a) negative perception of agricul ture as a profession; (b) insuffi cient government investment in SUCs; (c) rapid urbanization of agricultural areas; and (d) devo lution of agricultural services to local government units.

It takes an ecosystem and several actors to work together to produce and deliver the food we need, the lives we must have. It is this dynamic and complex ecosystem that will equip agri culture to cope with the com peting challenges of addressing food safety and food security, creating inclusive livelihoods, mitigating climate change and sustainably managing natural resources.Agriculture constitutes the foundation of the country’s successful economy. As such, it is imperative that all concerned bodies work together, innovate continuously, collaborate in research and development to meet future challenges in agri culture. The battle towards achiev ing success in agriculture is a fight fought by many. A fight that is tight. Victory in it is our country’s future. Agriculture is the future. Will you be part of it?

The farmers lack sup port, training and a moral boost. First, they lack basic skills in farming. Many are not educated or are only elementary graduates. Second, good fertil izers, pesticides and seeds are imported from other countries, making them very expensive and unaffordable for the lowly farmer. Third, the government has not developed a good infrastructure for farmers (i.e. farm-to-market roads, irrigation system, drying facilities, milling centers, etc.). Fourth, most of our farmers do not own the land they till. They cannot maximize the use of the land resulting in low income. And since they are just tenants, some landowners require a 50-50 share of the product, thus leaving only half of the produce to the farmers. Fifth, farmers have difficulty in financing their farming endeav

To stand in solidarity with the indigenous people means challeng ing teledrama-type of narratives, and disputing the establishment’s notion of IP Goingadvocacy.backtoteledrama, and with my points on token advocacy, I think it should now be clear how the series of stories propagate the problematic view of how hard work inevitably leads to success – for con tractual workers, peasant farmers, urban poor, and indigenous people. It blatantly disregards the fact that there will always be socio-political realities and structures in place to keep the poor poor. It ignores the hard truth that even when our indigenous people break their backs working, and struggling, no teledra ma happy ending is ready for their taking.

Another alarming notion that emerges insinuates that CLAA and its supporters who challenge the teledrama’s accounting of their lives are causing a harmful division among their tribe. This signifies how people still see indigenous communities in this day and age: a monolith. But this impression that all Aetas think alike, or that the Aeta community has just one shared view of what is right and good for their community is not only insulting, but also essentializing. As advocates, there is a need to accept the anthro pological fact that even within tribal communities, contradictions and disagreements exist. To fully and genuinely understand indigenous people, we need to realize first that they are not unchanging commu nities of people. They are a vibrant, dynamic, and complex people whose tribal customs are not always “pris tine” or fixed.

Singular achievements must be recognized for what they are. But our bigger dream is for a time to come when indigenous students finish ing college is no longer unique or a newsworthy event – because this becomes the norm.

Echoes of this kind of thinking reverberate in social media, and even beyond it. But where do these perspectives and sentiments come from? And what are their deeper implications? As both an IP advo cate and a part of the middle-class, I struggle to unpack this issue and to encircle what does being a genuine IP advocate means to me.

“Even when our indigenous people break their backs working, and struggling, no teledrama happy ending is ready for their taking.”

To stand in solidarity with the indigenous people means challenging teledrama-type of narratives, and disputing the establishment’s notion of IP advocacy.

Lives of aetas as portrayed in Teledramas; CULTURAL MISAPPROPRIATION AND PARTIALITY OF TRUTH?

here is a knot when we embrace teledramas as truth. Created for television as feel-good TV, they mind to dramatize deodorized and oversimplified stories of victory over poverty and insurmount able odds. As such, they gloss over many significant aspects of the continuing struggle of marginalized people in consonance with the stony dwelling of peasants or indigenous people. The reality is that most people born into poverty can struggle their entire life and yet still die dirt-poor. At the very least, teledramas depict idealized, glamorized and sweetened stories of people’s personal histories. It can even be argued that what they introduce are fantasies, just make-believes.

A few days after, Norman posted a Facebook status warning people about CLAA’s statement. Among his arguments, and those of others that have come to his defense, three key points must be discussed with more depth: (1) there was a strong accusation that those who question the teledrama’s depiction of the Kings’ lives, and consequently, those who support CLAA are trying to tear their communities apart, either out of envy or boredom; (2) that non-indigenous peoples who are genuine indigenous people (IP) advocates cannot and should not interfere with Aeta disputes and pro ceedings, because they are not from their communities and do not know their customary laws; and (3) that CLAA should name the Aetas who accuse the Kings of betrayal, and that if they cannot, then the organi zation must be fabricating lies.

al fundamentalism. My favorite anthropology professor once noticed a similar trend affecting some Min danao communities. Konrad Kottak described “fundamentalism” as an anti-modernist movement “wherein fundamentalists perceive a dilution, or even corruption, of their beliefs and way of life within the modern mainstream, leading them to seek a return to “an earlier, purer” way of life.” He draws an example of this in the tendency of tribal leaders in connivance with the Philippine army to insist on the principle of “kan ya-kanya” or the idea that no tribe, village or support group must med dle with the affairs of their neigh bors. This type of thinking promoted by the State implies that there is only one way of being a “true” Aeta, or an IP: that you must adhere to your tribe’s laws and ways of life at all times and resist the intervention of people outside your community. Any deviation from this would mean that your tribe is being controlled, contaminated, or manipulated.

must also remember the thousands of indigenous children who have not lucked out on scholarships and financial aid to pursue education.

Another insult to indigenous peoples’ struggles would be the perspective that IPs are forever un erring and faultless and are immune to the promise of wealth and power.

After the episode aired, the Central Luzon Aeta Association (CLAA), a regional organization of Aeta people in Central Luzon issued a statement condemning the con troversial revisions of Roman King’s life. CLAA asserted that contrary to the teledrama’s depiction of Roman King as their community’s heroic Aeta leader, he was instead a tribal “dealer” who sold off pieces of their ancestral lands to both foreign and local investors. Among the alleged and what they say well-known misdeeds of King was signing the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) allowing the construction of the Puning Hot Spring high-class resort in Porac, Pampanga. It led to the displacement of dozens of Aeta families. Built on a huge chunk of ancestral land, the Hot Spring was portrayed on national television as a success for Aetas since it would supposedly generate employment. In reality, however, it pushed them deeper into poverty.

Lastly, in our attempt to challenge what genuine IP advocacy means, there is a need for reflexivity when we talk for example the case of Norman King. While we celebrate his achievements with him, we

For the yesterdays’ days, my Facebook feed has been on fire with friends’ counter reactions to a teledrama episode curtaining the life of Nor man King and his father, Roman King. Many people know Norman as the first Aeta who graduated from the University of the Philippines-Manila, thus capturing the appetite of many people.

The elephant in the room is that by and large, state provision and support for free and quality educa tion for indigenous children remains an unrealized dream for most. It has to be said that IPs do not need our charity and token advocacy; they have long asserted and fought for their right to ancestral domain and self-determination. Because of lack of schools, they built their own alternative schools, organized themselves despite state terror and fascism. If we want to be genuine IP advocates, we need to listen. When they tell us their stories of struggle for quality education for all, we must listen. Of their resistance against big transnational mining and land-grab bing companies, we must listen. Even and especially when it means challenging our trite notions of in digenous culture; even and especial ly when it makes us uncomfortable; and even and especially when we realize that not all IP struggles fit the romanticized and idealized mold of teledramas, we must listen.

Two of my friends who speak up their criticisms of the episode take part in community organizing. One is a peasant organizer and advocate based in Central Luzon whose work involves close coordination with the Aeta community in Pampanga. The second is a writer who had the chance to immerse with the Aetas recently. Both say that the Kings’ life story was heavily revised. Roman King was portrayed as a benevolent leader, some one who was brave enough to defend their tribal community from a compa ny who wanted to build a geothermal plant within their ancestral domain. He was portrayed as an admirable chieftain who had nothing but the tribe’s best interests at heart.

A young man is looking for Ari so he could be honored by the town in the high-school campus, this young man is another hero of the story, Jay pee, who is capable of understanding, but is not proficient of the Kapam pangan dialect, just like some any other people in his generation. In his search for Ari, together with his worn out motorcycle, he reached the lahar hand, and across the wooded area, until he found the isolated, humble home of Ari.

As Ari’s wife passes the crown to Jaypee, that silent phrase which lingers at the hearts of each regions appears, -- The king is dead. Long Live the King. In which it simply indicates that it will not end there. It will keep on moving for ward as that burning passion continuously grow. Ari is a king without a castle, treasure, and new clothes. He had poetry. Through poetry he delivers his melancholy. He grieves for the dying art. Poetry is his art of expressing the love he had for his motherland and its culture, and for that, he had done his duty, though he wishes that others would do the same, or at least they would give a sweet applause for an old poet like him.

The film tackles the art of poetry, preservation of culture, and as well as distinctiveness. The film’s first shot is the Mt. Pinatubo, peaceful and splen did, but at the roots of it, lies a dreadful memory that forever changed the landscape of Pampanga. The region seemed to have lost that distinctive ness because of this disaster.

movie review:

MY LIFE WITH THE KING Ari

WORDS BY MIKAELA FAITH HINTON

It also looks at the Kapampangan poetic tradition, in which we are facing the negative reality. Poets are neglected, forgotten, but is very essential and important especially when it comes to preserving our culture. Poetry is an incredible art, just like our culture, they were being appreciated, respected, and honored, they say. But what is the use of it if poetry and culture are not practiced in the first place. Poetry and culture should not turn into a myth in the future generations. Something that is just defined with incredible words, described with pleasing adjectives, and people will only remember their con tributions but never really learned how to use them.

The 2015 film directed by Carlo Enciso Catu and written by Robby Tant ingco, entitled MyLifewithaKing, is a story where geography and culture are entwined to indicate the importance of one another. In Pampanga, it is put into practice that poets choose a king among themselves, in which he will be regarded as Ari, for hari (king), with the H dropped. The story re volved around the Ari, Conrado “Dado” Guinto, a renowned alumnus in the field of culture and arts.

he King is dead. Long live the king -- a popular phrase voiced imme diately after a king’s death in the British monarchy. Yet, it was also that silent phrase which lingers at the heart of each existing regions. Their hearts leads to a culture, and that culture is our king. For as long as there is at least one person practicing the culture, it will continue to live on.

An incredible bond began, in a form of mentor-student relationship, as Jaypee seeks help in writing a love poem for the girl he likes, a burning passion awakens. The passion continues, even after Jaypee gets rejected, after all, what could be a better inspiration for poetry than love? A heartbreak.

THE GIANT LANTERN FESTIVALTheGiant Lantern

The streets are well decorated with lights, houses already put up their Christ mas trees, Christmas-packed music is booming from hous es to houses, and the children are all excited--for this season is their favorites as well One of highlights of every Christmas season in the Philippines is the lan terns and in Pampanga, I can say that lanterns are extraordinary. Showcasing the creativity and culture of every Kapampangans, we are known for our Giant Lan terns. In fact, San Fernando Pampanga is hailed as the Christmas Capital of the Phil ippines.Who would not turn their heads if they saw these colorful bright lanterns in the streets? The typical height of one lan tern is 20 feet Nowadays, highcolored plastic and steel frame replaced the old-style mate rials. Over 10000 light bulb also shared in the making of the lantern thus making it colorful and bright. The bulbs are wired up together using electrical wires. Rotors or large steel barrels replaced the manual switch making it easier. Hairpins and masking tapes are attached to each wires leading to the each bulb that connects the light in to the rotor. The lights are also patterned with music making it looked like the lights are dancing.

In the early times, these Giant Lanterns or “Parul Sampernandu” are made of papel de hapon and bamboo. With the birth of electricity in 1931, the lan terns are now joined by lights that dances off to the music.

WHAT IS THE SIGNIF ICANCE OF THE LAN

The lights are controlled by individual switches that were manually turned on and off.

TERN?The Christmas Lantern is one of the greatest symbol ism of faith and hope in the Philippines. It represents the Star of Bethlehem and in the Catholic beliefs, this star was followed by the Three Kings to find the child Jesus Christ in the manger. Since a parol is basically a star, it speaks a lot about light and finding hope

The first step in mak ing the lantern is brainstorm ing—it is thinking of the de sign and overall appearance of the parol. The next step is the welding of the frame providing the size, shape, and the body. The next thing to do is to put decorations like “palara” or shiny paper like aluminumThefoil.next step is prob ably the hardest one--it is the setting up of light bulbs and making sure it will be all con nected to the rotors. This step also needs safety because it is when electrical wirings are lined up to do the show.

Traditionally, a parol is a five point star-shaped lantern that differs with the lantern most people are used to especially in other coun tries. anekdota ng isang baguhan sa pamantasan: SA SUSUNOD NA PANAHON IBANG DIMENSYON

Neither time nor luck has been my friend. They aren’t on my side because if they were, then it would not hurt this much. I faced many problems in my life, so did Jacques, my friend who I was talking about. We’ve been together since time immemorial, and only got separated when I was sent to Canada when we were twelve. Now that we’re eighteen, I did not know I would be seeing him this soon, in a funeral, where he was the one inside the casket. If I had known his stories meant something, I would’ve returned sooner.

sfatedashowflowerswither, snowflakesaremeanttofallandbeasfrag ileasabrokenheart,” a tear fell as I looked at him again. Never have I ever imagined we would be meeting again like this—in winter, where snow in other places fall.

WORDS BY EDLYN C. VENASQUEZ GRAPHICS BY ANGELO D. TOLENTINO

Small problems after small problems become big if they are piled up, and that’s what we all need to see. We can never question someone for giving up easily just because their reasons seem shallow to us, especially if we don’t know the whole story on how they became like that. Snowflakes can be as flimsy as a glass, but they could also be as strong as an ice, and when they melt, that’s when the snow finally faced its greatest fall.

F21 perspectives

I could still remember how he talked about snowflakes generation. I did not even know what he was blabbering about then until he told me that it’s sad that we were considered to belong to that. He narrated how we, teens are being described as less resilient, and easy to give up individuals, hence, being named snowflakes. He said that teens perceive themselves to be special, and feel like they are given special treatment. Just a little failure at school, they cry and do silly things, and when things don’t go the way they wanted to, they start to complain how life is hard and that it was unfair. It was weird then because every time we talk, with no fail, he would say something about that. It’s a shame that I even had the audacity to laugh at him and tell him that it was not a big deal because I know that he and I are not included to that population. I remember he smiled that time and agreed. My mistake was that I did not see the emptiness behind his smile. Or maybe I did, but because we were both tired and had our own problems, I did not even bother. If I had known that would be the last time I would talk to him, I would’ve treasured all of it. Now, he’s gone because of a break up. How funny. People have been wondering on how a boy could end his life just because he was dumped by his girlfriend. It sounds shallow. When I heard that news, I wanted to scoff, too. Who in their right mind would do such thing just because of a break up, right? It should not be a big deal because almost everyone have experienced that already. Yes, it may seem trivial for people who did not know him, but since I do, of course I know better. Problems are still problems, may it be serious or not. He had them kept, and when he faced his greatest hitch triggered by the break up, he finally let go of the rope he’s been holding for too long. And people never knew that because the thing about them is that they can only see the surface, but they can’t see what was under, the very reason why we were called snowflakes generation. It’sironic how a snowflake can be fragile when they were broken fractals of ice, just like Jacques, or any other teen in this generation. But just like ice, they’ve been strong for a while and when they melt, that’s when people see how shallow they could be, without really knowing everything they’ve been through. They only see the water; they did not witness how the snowflake slowly melted and turn into mere liquid, completely lifeless and dull. The hail could stay for a long time, but it melts slowly, yet quietly. It’s a torture to be melting bit by bit, as if something is sucking all the energy that was left in you, making you seem drained. Similar to what happened to Jacques, he was slowly melting, but no one ever really noticed. You see, teens may appear to easily give up in other people’s eyes, but there are some who have been strong, who keep on holding on despite their hard situation, and that is what people need to understand.

Emergingtally. sports where some Filipino athletes have proved re cently that they can have a podium finish on the world stage are gym nastics, boxing, martial arts, and even boat racing. The nation’s sport leaders should also spend time and resources to these sports that are suited for the Filipino weight and height is not an advantage. Look how the youngest and the shortest participant at the recently conclud ed FIG World Artistic Gymnastic Championship raised the Philippine flag, a sport that has never been to the limelight of the country’s sport but shocked the world and upset heavy favorites like Israel and China or how an aspiring Filipina secured her AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship, defeating her Russian rival on her home turf.

Various factors can be enu merated why the status of sports in the country has started to decline drastically. These include the lack of priorities among emerging sports, the insufficient numbers of state-of-the art facilities paired with uncompetitive trainers, and the inadequate support or incentives

he famous parable of David and Goliath had been bestowed in our minds and hearts ever since. It was a story of how a young boy named David defeated the giant Philistine warrior of Gath, Goliath. The participating National Sports Associations (NSAs) are also finalizing the operations of the venues, but there are some that are still under renovation like the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.

The points generating machine of Gilas may not be effective in the for sure tough defense of Serbia that will tipped by Denver Nuggets Star Nikola Jokic and former NBA player milos Teodosic. In addition, breaking the defense of top caliber countries will be like breaking a solid and tough wall for Gilas.

It’s long overdue. The country has schools for aspiring artists and scientists, and why not for possible world-class athletes? It could have a good idea to build NASHS but it is undeniably a possible pool for corruption. There is a serious distrust in the government. The sports system itself or the commission involved should be fixed before adding insult to injury. A major reform should be accomplished. All these things must be integrated in building and defining the sports academy in the Philippines to finally improve the downcast status of sports in the country.

Every school administration ought to guarantee that mentors are competitive to produce competitive athletes too. In layman’s term, the selection of trainers should not like choosing as easy as one, two, and three. It should have undergone a process, an assessment, and must have strict requirements since they are going to hone young athletes.

Kapag araw-araw ang training, in that case, mabibuild mo ang patience. And of course, team work. Kung araw-araw mong kasama ang mga team mates mo, magkaka roon ng camaraderie and teamwork by means of communication, Nag gogrow din ang value ng spirituality sa kanila kasi before and after ng training naming, nagdadasal kami. Usually, naaapply din naming ang core values ng PSAU,” Sigua shared that their training does not only help the athletes in the physical aspect but also to ripen their earnest values.

In connection with the two mentioned issues, every athlete must receive enough incentives from the government. The problem is that only those fortunate players that managed to compete abroad and ended win ning are elligible to receive whopping incentives under the Republic Act No. 10699 or the “Expanded Incentives Act.” Every athlete, regardless of distinctions that has already obtained, must be handed financial support that they need. No wonder that during awarding ceremonies, he never slips the limelight to be included in the pool of the “Mythical Five” or even the most coveted “Most Valuable Player” title. These plenty of experiences shaped him to be one of the prominent basketball players not just in the humble town of Magalang but also across the province.Despite of the countless recognitions and praises he is receiving, Jake admitted that there are some points that he is a subject to criticisms especially during

In a male-dominated sport like basketball, whenever a girl is playing it, that individual is instantly branded as lesbian or “bi.” This manifestly implies that there is sexism, or even stereotyping in sports. Have you ever imagined why the Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) does only covers and broad casts the men’s basketball games? Statistics even says that only 4% of sports-related media coverage is devoted for women. Vice versa, the limelight has always been focused on the prominent and elite volleyball tournaments in the country that are composed of female players. It goes with male volleyball players that are not often recog nized unless they garnered a laudable stint. Again, the bottom line is, sexism in sports still exists.

For their first five consec utive games in the said provin cial-wide basketball tournament, Jake has proven that even his team is a newbie, his jaw-dropping veteran skills and powerful moves left the spectators, the other play ers, and even the commentators impressed. In fact, he is a consis tent top scorer for the PSAU team with an average of 20 points per game. Tagged with his momentous, far-fetched layup and stood as the foreman of their incredible setplay, it is no question that he is dubbed as “Jake The Snake.”

usual words spoken by some individuals, like a percentage of us, Filipinos, who are still blinded of the stereotype for sports. It is a harsh reality that in a world where tolerance and understanding have grown so much, there remain some people who are likely to put labels and standards to sports. In particular, the exclusion of gender for a certain sport is one of the clear examples of this. Sexism in sports still exists.

Earlier this month of October, I was immensely stunned by the successful medal gold campaigns of 19-year old Carlos Yulo for the FIG Artistic Gymnastic World Championship and Nesthy Petecio for the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship. In my mind, their triumph symbolizes a huge leap from the common mindset of the people; a milestone more than just the pride, honor, and glory that they brought for the country. They also proved that gender doesn’t need to define a sport.
