PRPG.mx began three years ago February 2019 while I was working in my studio completing a re-do of my submission for Mexicraneos. I had completed and exhibited a large-scale skull for the Dia de los Muertos festival in Mexico City, Mexico. My expectations that the project would gain me entry into the local art community had crashed. My craneo design had been destroyed in the streets and I had been trolled online for participating in a Mexican cultural festival as a gringo.

Needless to say, I was disappointed and left craving connections to artists outside my own studio practice.

The idea occurred to me that I could create my own community of artists in the vast amount of space I enhabited. It started with open live model drawing sessions and hosting open studio events with other artists invited. Quickly, people within the community started recommending artists who were traveling to Mexico to stay in my extra spaces and create art while here. The residency as a formal option grew out of this atmosphere of collaboration. In 2020 just as things were gaining momentum the pandemic shut everything down.

Although we physically closed the doors for protection, it became clear the desire to connect from studio-to-studio was even more important. This is when we began to meet online informally via zoom and form a broader community of artists from all over the world. Informality lead to the formality and growth of the online program to what is now called the Exhibition Incubator. Artists meeting weekly to critique, share processes, and work towards exhibitions. With the residency spaces closed, we then converted to a gallery space hosting our shows with the patronage of Dab Art Co. in Los Angeles hosting us on Artsy.net.

The exhibtions grew in scale alongside the digital residency, we participated in the Zona Maco art fair, gained sponsorships from the Secretaria de Cultura and Teatros de CDMX, and gained a reputation for innovation and representation of the Queer and allied communities. Fast forward to 2023, the pandemic continued to change normal operations but the community and spaces had grown significantly. The residency spaces reopened and artists began to travel to CDMX to create work and exhibit.

This show is a cumulation of relationships between artists, curators, and supporters.

Many of the artists are traveling to be here for Semana de Arte 2022 and connect in-person where they’d only connected online before. We celebrate the resilience, passion, and connections as a positive side effect of a difficult historical moment.

We acknowledge the moment had not passed but demand the connections continue to evolve.

I am so grateful to all the artists who have given PRPG.mx their trust, time, energy, and creativity to counteract the onslaught of complications of the past few years. I often ask the artists if they see themselves in this diverse community of non-bianary artists. Non-binary in gender, sexuality, materials, and processes. We aren’t limited by definitions but connected by our trust for one another and passion for art.

PRPG.mx nació hace tres años, en Febrero de 2019, mientras trabajaba en mi estudio. En aquél tiempo, me encontraba reelaborando mi proyecto para mexicraneos. Unos meses antes, había expuesto una calavera a gran escala para el festival del Día de los Muertos en la Ciudad de México. Sin embargo, mis expectativas de que el proyecto me permitiera entrar en la comunidad artística local se habían disipado.

Mi “mexicraneo” fué destruido en las calles y había sufrido severas críticas en internet por participar en un festival cultural mexicano, siendo “gringo”. Situación que me hizo sentir decepcionado, sin ganas de relacionarme con artistas ajenos a mi estudio.

Fue en ese momento que se me ocurrió la idea de crear mi propia comunidad de artistas en el espacio que habitaba. Empecé así, con sesiones abiertas de dibujo de modelos en vivo y después, organizando eventos de estudio abierto con artistas invitados. Rápidamente, la gente de la comunidad empezó a recomendarle a los artistas que viajaban a México, que se quedaran en mis espacios, por la oportunidad de crear arte mientras estaban visitando. La residencia como una opción formal creció con esta atmósfera de colaboración. En 2020, justo cuando las cosas estaban cobrando impulso, la pandemia cerró todo.

Aunque cerramos las puertas para protegernos físicamente, permaneció el deseo de conectar con otros estudios. Fue entonces cuando comenzamos con las reuniones en línea de manera informal a través de zoom. Así, formamos rápidamente una comunidad más amplia de artistas al rededor de todo el mundo.

La informalidad llevó a la formalidad y al crecimiento del programa en línea, el mismo que ahora lleva por nombre Incubadora de Exposiciones. Actualmente los artistas nos reunimos semanalmente para criticar, compartir procesos y trabajar con miras a las exposiciones. Cuando se cerraron los espacios de residencia, nos convertimos en una galería, espacio donde presentamos nuestras exposiciones con el patrocinio de Dab Art Co. (Los Ángeles), quién nos brindó la oportunidad para participar de la plataforma Artsy.net.

Las exposiciones rápidamente crecieron junto con la residencia digital. Hemos participado en la feria de arte Zona Maco, además obtuvimos patrocinios de la Secretaría de Cultura y los Teatros de CDMX. Hemos hasta el momento construido una reputación de innovación y representación de las comunidades Queer y aliadas. Así nos enfrentamos al 2022, la pandemia ha modificado la manera en que operaba el mundo del arte, pero de la mano de nuestra comunidad, nuestros espacios han crecido significativamente. Ahora los espacios de residencia volvieron a abrirse y los artistas han vuelto a viajar a la CDMX para crear obras y exponer.

Esta muestra es un claro ejemplo de las relaciones nacidas entre artistas, comisarios y demás colaboradores. Esta vez muchos artistas viajan para estar aquí en la Semana de Arte 2022 y conectarse en persona, con aquellos con los que solamente habían conectado en línea. Celebramos la resistencia, la pasión y las conexiones como un efecto secundario positivo dentro de esta pandemia. Somos conscientes que este momentó histórico no ha pasado, pero estamos trabajando para que las conexiones sigan evolucionando.

Estoy muy agradecido con todos los artistas, quiénes han depositado en PRPG.mx su confianza, tiempo, energía y creatividad para contrarrestar la avalancha de complicaciones de los últimos años. A menudo pregunto a los artistas si se ven a sí mismos en esta comunidad diversa de artistas no binarios. Me refiero a no binarios en cuanto a género, sexualidad, materiales y procesos. Nuestra comunidad no se limita por definiciones, sino que se encuentra fuertemente conectada por nuestra confianza mutua y nuestra pasión por el arte.

Doug Winter is a semi-sighted lens-based artist investigating partial blindness and vision disabilities through experimental photographic processes.

An established editorial and fine art photographer whose work is exhibited and collected internationally, Winter works in abstract and representational photography, focusing on social awareness. He is inspired by light and reflective colors in nature, creating two-dimensional textured atmospheres.

Doug Winter prolífico artista norteamericano con vista parcial en un ojo, dedicado fundamentalmente a lentes de cámaras a partir de los cuales investiga la ceguera parcial y las discapacidades visuales a través de procesos fotográficos experimentales.

Winter es fotógrafo establecido cuyo trabajo se exhibe y colecciona internacionalmente. Trabaja tanto en fotografía abstracta como representativa enfocándose en conciencia social. Se inspira en los colores claros y reflectantes de la naturaleza, creando atmósferas texturizadas bidimensionales.

Doug Winter | Enter Light In 2012, I lost partial vision in my right eye, due to a rare blood disorder. My father’s health began to fail a few years later, and he subsequently developed total vision loss in both eyes.

My impairment, coupled with my father’s, initiated my current project.

Near Sight explores visual disabilities and impaired vision, and how colors, natural shapes, and forms influence our personal history; and how our human system adapts, grieves, and adjusts to significant physical impairment.

A modified camera lens distorts the shape and color of the objects I photograph, pushing formal objects into a spectrum of emotions and colors. Modifying a lens that works with my camera, and interprets the defective perception of a human eye, was very challenging. These differences, between how a camera lens and a human eye see, provided a significant hurdle.

The imagery created is devoid of any reference to a mechanical lens. My desire is to capture images as a human eye sees, not as a camera sees.

While caring for my father, Harry, I’d ask him to describe in detail what he saw, measuring if his sight was better or worse, depending on the day. He would describe the shapes and colors of objects and landscapes through a North-facing window in photographic terms: Blurry, out of focus, like a broken camera.

We talked about his life, memories of youth, lost love, his career as an engineer in the space program, and growing up on a farm with little money. I based this work on our conversations. At its heart, the work wants to go beyond the two-dimensional object and unlock an impression by drawing upon the spectators’ lived experiences. This relationship, between art objects and the encounter with it, may allow a transformation of a casual spectator into a witness.

En el año 2012, perdí parcialmente la visión del ojo derecho debido a un trastorno sanguíneo poco común. Años después, la salud de mi padre comenzó a deteriorarse, y culminó en la pérdida total de su vista.

Mientras cuidaba de Harry -mi padre- le pedí que me describiera a detalle lo que veía: así pude medir cada día si su vista mejoraba o empeoraba. Él me describía las formas y los colores de objetos y paisajes, como si los estuviese viendo desde una ventana orientada al norte. La larga trayectoria de Harry cómo fotógrafo le permitía comunicarse conmigo en el argot fotográfico y referirse a planos borrosos, desenfocados o con aberraciones ópticas. Sus narraciones también acusaban otros planos: hablábamos sobre su vida, sus recuerdos de juventud, un desamor, y su estancia en una granja, sin dinero.

Mi discapacidad, junto con la de mi padre, dio inicio al proyecto Near Light, que expone el entorno de la deficiencia visual, los daños en la vista, y cómo es que la distorsión de los colores, las figuras naturales y las formas influyen en nuestra historia personal. Además, Near Light explora la manera en que nuestro sistema humano se adapta, se aflige y se ajusta a significativos daños físicos.

Para interpretar la alteridad de la vista humana me propuse el desafío de reformar la lente de mi cámara. Al modificarla, se distorsionan las formas y el color de los objetos fotografiados y eso conduce hacia un nuevo espectro de emociones y colores.

Captar las diferencias entre el registro de una lente fotográfica y la debilidad visual, sigue siendo todo un reto. Las imágenes logradas carecen de cualquier referencia. Mi deseo, entonces, es reproducir imágenes como lo haría un lánguido ojo humano y no como las captura una cámara.

Basé éste proyecto en entrañables conversaciones bajo la lúcida obscuridad. En el corazón del trabajo, la obra va mas allá de un objeto bidimensional y desencadena memorias a través de tocar las experiencias de vida de quien observa. Esta relación o encuentro permite la transformación de un espectador casual en un testigo.

Ali Warren | De’capite’

De’capite’ is a collection of paintings that reflect the conflict of sexuality and the innocence of youth. Deciding to paint two of the four paintings of an adult, Warren has allowed herself to express the provocative experience of being a woman through the stages of life.

De’capite’ es una colección de cuadros que reflejan el conflicto de la sexualidad y la inocencia de la juventud. Al decidir pintar dos de los cuatro cuadros de un adulto, Warren se ha permitido expresar la provocativa experiencia de ser mujer a través de las etapas de la vida.

In “Julia with Dark Face” Warren chose to position her model with her leg up and open. The model’s underwear, that is just seen at the top of her bare thighs, is a combination of innocent and seductive. She eludes to the loss of virginity in “Julia’s First” but the title also refers to Julia’s vulnerability when modeling nude. Her double face is an attempt to portray the frenetic nature of embarrassment around nudity.

En “Julia con cara oscura”, Warren eligió colocar a su modelo con la pierna levantada y abierta. La ropa interior de la modelo, que sólo se ve en la parte superior de sus muslos desnudos, es una combinación de inocencia y seducción. En “Julia’s First” se alude a la pérdida de la virginidad, pero el título también hace referencia a la vulnerabilidad de Julia al modelar desnuda. Su doble cara es un intento de retratar la naturaleza frenética de la vergüenza en torno a la desnudez.

Warren depicts her children in the other two paintings. “Decapite” and “Interview with Hannah” feel as if the psychological and emotional experience is the focus rather than the flesh. With unusual angles of her children’s faces she hones in on the mood around their evolving selves and the brutality and darkness around pubescence. There is a chaste nature in these two paintings.

Warren’s characters appear disoriented and not equipped to face this existence, and yet they are thrown into reality despite it. The colors and the small backgrounds with which she builds the figures seem a series of marks that life inexorably leaves on our bodies. All four paintings retain the distorted, unsettling feeling that is the signature of Ali Warren’s work.

Warren representa a sus hijos en los otros dos cuadros. En “Decapite” y “Interview with Hannah” parece que la experiencia psicológica y emocional es el centro de atención más que la carne. Con ángulos inusuales de los rostros de sus hijos, se centra en el estado de ánimo que rodea a su evolución y en la brutalidad y oscuridad que rodea a la pubertad. En estos dos cuadros hay una naturaleza casta.

Los personajes de Warren parecen desorientados y no equipados para enfrentarse a esta existencia, y sin embargo se ven arrojados a la realidad a pesar de ello. Los colores y los pequeños fondos con los que construye las figuras parecen una serie de marcas que la vida deja inexorablemente en nuestros cuerpos. Los cuatro cuadros conservan la sensación distorsionada e inquietante que caracteriza la obra de Ali Warren.

Steven Baboun | Masisi San Non (Fag With No Name) Steven Baboun presents his installation and performance Masisi San Non to emphasize the political and social persecution that queer Haitians face in Haiti. His performance also accentuates the tendency of society to deem and label Queer Haitians as invisible, as second-class citizens, as being a threat to the culture, and as being nameless. The artist brings to light the collective sorrow and struggles that the queer community faces every day in Haiti. Baboun creates a sense of urgency and the fiery desire to fight for a kinder, more tolerant, and equal Haiti for all sexual and gender identities through his artwork and performances. “The artist almost seems that they are on the verge of death, but the sound of "Masisi 1, Masisi 2, Masisi 3, etc" keeps the artist alive - giving the artist a purpose to keep fighting.”

Why we need to support Queer folks in Haiti are politically and socially persecuted daily. Haiti being a predominantly conservative society, queer folks have no real legal proPRPG.mx | 26

tection, representation, or visibility. It is so important to support the queer organizations we have in place in Haiti. Queer organizations like Kouraj and OTDH provide resources and mentorship to the queer community in Haiti, especially the queer youth. The work of these two organizations is important as they advocate for queer rights and more tolerant society. These organizations are the real only safe space we have for us queer Haitians and are important to sustain and invest in them.

Kouraj's mission: KOURAJ is a group of masisi (queers) activists, created to politicize other homosexuals and transgender persons in Haiti regarding their fundamental human rights. Faced with other organizations and programs working with this traditionally defined « vulnerable group » or « marginalized persons » – an ineffective concept imposed on members of the masisi community by outsiders – KOURAJ seeks to empower homosexuals and transgender persons in order to reinforce a veritable masisi community in the country. KOURAJ is convinced that will be ready for change only when the masisi community itself – not foreign organizations working « with » the community – decides that Haitian society is ready for a change in the form of a Haitian rights-based movement.

Organisation Trans d'Haiti's mission: Since its inception in 2017, OTRAH has been committed to the inclusion of all transgender people in Haiti through its programming. Below is an outline of the various areas of focus that the team is organized around. OTRAH’s leadership team works in close proximity with governmental and civil society actors to raise awareness for transgender rights at the national and local levels. In particular, OTRAH has provided advocacy services to local justice-based organizations, health groups (specifically on providing competent healthcare to transgender individuals and HIV-positive individuals), financial services organizations, as well as social groups for broader acceptance of the community.

Steven Baboun | Masisi San Non (Marica sin nombre) Steven Baboun presenta su instalación y performance Masisi San Non para subrayar la persecución política y social a la que se enfrentan los haitianos queer en Haití. Su performance también acentúa la tendencia de la sociedad a considerar y etiquetar a los haitianos queer como invisibles, como ciudadanos de segunda clase, como una amenaza para la cultura y sin nombre. El artista saca a la luz el dolor y las luchas colectivas a las que se enfrenta la comunidad queer cada día en Haití. Baboun crea una sensación de urgencia y el deseo ardiente de luchar por un Haití más amable, tolerante e igualitario para todas las identidades sexuales y de género a través de

Al ser Haití una sociedad predominantemente conservadora, las personas queer no tienen ninguna protección legal real, ni representación, ni visibilidad. Es muy importante apoyar a las organizaciones queer que tenemos en Haití. Organizaciones queer como Kouraj y OTDH proporcionan recursos y tutoría a la comunidad queer de Haití, especialmente a los jóvenes queer. El trabajo de estas dos organizaciones es importante, ya que defienden los derechos de los homosexuales y una sociedad más tolerante. Estas organizaciones son el único espacio seguro real que tenemos los haitianos queer y es importante mantenerlas e invertir en ellas.

La misión de la Organización Trans de Haití: Desde su creación en 2017, OTRAH se ha comprometido con la inclusión de todas las personas transgénero en Haití a través de su programación. I am San Canessa (el Salvador), an abstract painter working with ink, water and paper. My practice consists of mapping emotional, spiritual and mental landscapes through movement, water and color. I am creating a language to explore the subconscious.

Articulating this experience through abstract landscape is an improvised choreography between movement and material. The ink allows the dance of body, spirit, and water to be recorded. Mixtures o f pigment and water create topographic/terrain-like forms that can be perceived as landscape. Working within the constraints of black and white palate I engage the subconscious; the visual narrative of water and its conductive energy coming to form.

X-Rays of The Heart I-VI es una meditación de seis piezas sobre la muerte y la agonía, hecha para examinar y navegar por mi alegría, mi dolor, mi ternura en la vulnerabilidad y mi ser con lo que es.

Articular esta experiencia a través de un paisaje abstracto es una coreografía improvisada entre el movimiento y el material. La tinta permite registrar la danza del cuerpo, el espíritu y el agua. Las mezclas de pigmento y agua crean formas topográficas/terrestres que pueden percibirse como paisaje. Shortfalls in obtaining supplies, galleries closed, isolation, and disconnection from the norms of creative life. Each week these artists met and followed the progress of one another’s projects. This show is a fraction of what was created during these dark moments. It brings together a group of artists who know each other only as a square within the world of zoom but share the deepest of intimacy with their creative lives. They meet #IRL (in-real-life) many for the first time here in Mexico City. In this show, we present the resilience of the creative spirit, celebrate the interconnectedness of a world gone mad, and demonstrate the power of community and creativity.

ZaHaVa Sherez (American), I am a legal citizen in four countries and am a direct descendent of generations of immigrants and refugees. I have been exposed to many cultures, embrace them all as well as all traditions and the highest level of spirituality. My experiences have taught me that humanity is but one race, which has been the main theme in my work.

This piece is from the series “InBodied Light”.

These sculptures are about the human race and the energy that connects us all as one.

I peel away any aspects that would invite stereotyping by shaping human bodies into stylized abstracted beings faceless and genderless, this way each piece is at the same time no one and everyone as We Are One. By creating a highly texturized surface light bounces off the surface and at the same time travels through each sculptures creating glowing beings.

ZaHaVa Sherez (Americana), soy ciudadana legal en cuatro países y soy descendiente directa de generaciones de inmigrantes y refugiados. He estado expuesta a muchas culturas, las abrazo a todas, así como a todas las tradiciones y al más alto nivel de espiritualidad. Alexandra Cicorschi (Romanian) The majority of the wood I use in my work comes from demolished houses and discarded furniture around the Bay Area of San Francisco, California. As I strip and re-mill found materials, I bring to the surface the organic origins of our urban surroundings. The strips I create become interlocked brushstrokes inside my wooden canvases. Open angles guide the fluidity of lines, telling a story of perpetual movement and transformation. In the process of creating something new out of something old, I reflect on what it means to live inside an environment shaped by consumerism and disconnect from culture and traditions.

Growing up in Romania during the last years of its communist regime, I internalized at an early age how limited resources can fuel creative reuse. When in need, people reach out for help, forming communities, offering support - and almost nothing gets discarded in this cycle. The process of recycling lies at the base of my art practice, both as a plea for sustainability as well as a way to connect to people and their stories.

Continuity is at the base of creation because everything evolves from something. My work is a reflection on the process of recirculating, which is a condition for life to exist, as seen in the way nature renews itself through the cycle of life and death.

Alexandra Cicorschi (Rumana) La mayor parte de la madera que utilizo en mi obra procede de casas derruidas y muebles desechados de la zona de la bahía de San Francisco, California. Al despojar y volver a fresar materiales encontrados, saco a la superficie los orígenes orgánicos de nuestro entorno urbano. Las tiras que creo se convierten en pinceladas entrelazadas dentro de mis lienzos de madera. Los ángulos abiertos guían la fluidez de las líneas, contando una historia de perpetuo movimiento y transformación. En el proceso de crear algo nuevo a partir de algo viejo, reflexiono sobre lo que significa vivir dentro de un entorno moldeado por el consumismo y la desconexión de la cultura y las tradiciones.

Al crecer en Rumanía durante los últimos años de su régimen comunista, interioricé a una edad temprana cómo los recursos limitados pueden alimentar la reutilización creativa. En caso de necesidad, la gente busca ayuda, formando comunidades y ofreciendo apoyo, y casi nada se desecha en este ciclo. El proceso de reciclaje está en la base de mi práctica artística, tanto como un alegato a favor de la sostenibilidad como una forma de conectar con la gente y sus historias. La continuidad está en la base de la creación porque todo evoluciona a partir de algo.

Mi obra es una reflexión sobre el proceso de recirculación, que es una condición para que exista la vida, como se ve en la forma en que la naturaleza se renueva a través del ciclo de la vida y la muerte.

Beth Fein (American) My art transverses the figurative to the abstract; observing ordinary life that surrounds me. My practice encompasses printmaking, performance, sculpture, and installation. My artistic journey began with clay, photography and dance. Each of these disciplines still reside within my work. My time as a dancer influences the interdisciplinary work I create today - investigating how movement and flow combine in art and life: in real time and real space; while exploring impermanence and the invisible wake we leave behind.

My current practice embraces chance and choice; stillness and movement; repression and freedom; conceptual and material; reality and dreams - a collage of personal experiences within the world that surrounds us. I focus on the shifting layers of experience balancing between the deeply personal and the political. There are references to social justice, betrayal, and struggle. My work can often be configured in different ways, picked up and moved as though it were a performance evolving for a specific site.

Ephemeral elements filter into many aspects of my art practice, magnifying the unpredictability of time and outside forces that permeate the essence of my artistic intent.

Hahnemühle AJ Schnettler (AMERICAN) Social media has made reaching others evermore accessible. Many put on a happy facade in their online presence to maintain a positive form of self representation. Although this is an integral part of modern day queer society, to embrace flaws and individuality, society still tells us that the world around us is very much gendered. Arbitrary westernized standards and expectations define so many people, stepping outside of that construct ensures alienation.

People naturally categorize others, meaning there will always be people assuming I am female; when I am nonbinary. That drives my body dysmorphia. The simple invasive act of gender assumption. I continuously battle the need to look androgynous so people can maybe correctly assume my gender, or look the way I feel most comfortable, which isn’t always looking androgynous. Although some interactions make me uncomfortable due to an incorrect assumption of gender, I try to present myself the way I would like in order to properly adress and affirm myself.

In this piece, I am showing the behind the scenes of my life; the parts of me I don’t openly express but play an integral role in my day-to-day life. Whether it is how I dress, how I cut my hair, how I eat, it all plays a role.

This will show some of my insecurities and how I adress them, but will also show what a lot of other nonbinary, trans, or gender nonconforming people do to feel happier with their appearance in this gendered, somewhat unaccepting society.

AJ Schnettler (AMERICANA) Las redes sociales han hecho que llegar a los demás sea cada vez más accesible. Muchos ponen una fachada feliz en su presencia en línea para mantener una forma positiva de auto-representación. Aunque esta es una parte integral de la sociedad queer de hoy en día, para abrazar los defectos y la individualidad, la sociedad todavía nos dice que el mundo que nos rodea es muy de género. Las normas y expectativas arbitrarias de Occidente definen a mucha gente, y salirse de esa construcción garantiza la alienación.

La gente categoriza a los demás de forma natural, lo que significa que siempre habrá gente que asuma que soy mujer, cuando no soy binaria. Eso es lo que impulsa mi dismorfia corporal. El simple acto invasivo de la suposición de género. Lucho continuamente contra la necesidad de tener un aspecto andrógino para que la gente pueda suponer correctamente mi género, o tener el aspecto con el que me siento más cómoda, que no siempre es el aspecto andrógino.

Aunque algunas interacciones me hacen sentir incómoda debido a una suposición incorrecta de género, intento presentarme como me gustaría para dirigirme y afirmarme adecuadamente.

En esta pieza, muestro los entresijos de mi vida; las partes de mí que no expreso abiertamente pero que desempeñan un papel integral en mi día a día. Ya sea cómo me visto, cómo me corto el pelo o cómo me alimento, todo juega un papel importante.

Esto mostrará algunas de mis inseguridades y cómo las afronto, pero también mostrará lo que muchas otras personas no binarias, trans o de género no conforme hacen para sentirse más felices con su apariencia en esta sociedad de género, algo inaceptable.

Nicolas Vander Biest Art has to speak for itself, and as far as I’m concerned, conceptual art is THE artform to establish this. Each piece I make explains itself. Besides that I try to accomplish a certain beauty, although that has become almost a dirty word when it comes to art.

Beauty lies within the right amount and combination of imperfections and preferably simplicity should rule. Although I don’t consider myself as a writer, all my work starts with the text. Those lines wander around, riping till the graphic solution strikes me. It can happen within a day or can take months. Due to my background in publicity I often compare my work to copywriting. A search for that seemingly simple tagline which brings a message not to misunderstand, even when it has a double meaning. My main focus is on questioning established theories, language, art and myself.

Nicolas Vander Biest El arte tiene que hablar por sí mismo, y en lo que a mí respecta, el arte conceptual es LA forma de arte para establecer esto. Cada pieza que hago se explica por sí misma. Además, intento conseguir cierta belleza, aunque ésta se ha convertido casi en una palabra sucia cuando se trata de arte. Aunque no me considero un escritor, todo mi trabajo comienza con el texto. Esas líneas vagan de un lado a otro, rasgando hasta que la solución gráfica me asalta. Puede ocurrir en un día o puede llevar meses. Debido a mi experiencia en publicidad, a menudo comparo mi trabajo con la redacción de textos publicitarios. Una búsqueda de ese eslogan aparentemente sencillo que aporte un mensaje que no se malinterprete, aunque tenga un doble sentido. Mi principal objetivo es cuestionar las teorías establecidas, el lenguaje, el arte y a mí mismo.

Robert Rausch (AMERICAN) Robert was raised in a small rural southern town. Struggling with a speech impediment and dyslexia, traditional schooling was difficult. With an eye for balance and beauty, his work deals with identity, and the desires and dreams that make us who we are.

Whether a real-life story or weaved into a fable identity and equality are explored in his photographs. Using his self as a subject to illustrate stories of desire and conflict and the basic idea of good and evil, and right or wrong show up in his imagery.

Hopefully, you will recognize your story there too, and my art can become your art as well.

My paintings seek to examine questions such as where does the boundary lie between enjoyment and indulgence? When can self-medication become self-harm? Does reality exist? I live and work in Salt Lake City, Utah, and my community is a vital part of my work. The queer artist subculture is so unique here. Because the state is religiously oppressive, queer and trans people tend to collect in the city, creating a queer bubble where we can live authentically and safely. I paint people in my community who live between binaries as a way to explore my own identity and to show the world how beautiful queer radical authenticity is.

Utilizo opuestos coexistentes, colores y valores contrastados, y una combinación de formas y patrones orgánicos para explorar estas cuestiones. Mi objetivo es transmitir temas universales -aislamiento, automedicación, identidades construidas, etc.- a través de instantáneas específicas de una subcultura concreta.

Gina D’Emilio (AMERICAN) was born in 1987 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and grew up on the ancestral land of Lenni-Lenape in Neshaminy Woodlands. D’Emilio’s work takes a closer look into the cycles of rescue, denial, and trauma healing. She draws inspiration from personal experiences living with adults who lived with mental illnesses. Remembering cyclical patterns of stress and complacency, her work is enlivened through physical studio processes like repetitive printmaking and meditative collages of hand-cut experiments on paper. D’Emilio builds a colorful narrative with bold fluorescent paints and holographic papers that shift from warm to cool colors, mimicking shifts in mood, and doodles as endless conversations with oneself.

Recordando patrones cíclicos de estrés y complacencia, su obra se anima a través de procesos físicos de estudio como el grabado repetitivo y los collages meditativos de experimentos cortados a mano sobre papel. OONA NELSON (AMERICAN) No More Dreams is a series of photographic interpretations of our current times. Contemplating the consequences of actions and transience of life as we know it.

Working in my California art studio, I regularly ordered live animals, replitles, snakes, and bugs to be brought in by handlers. I often build elaborate sets and then just end up choosing the photographs with simple props on a black background.

Contempla las consecuencias de las acciones y la fugacidad de la vida tal y como la conocemos.

Trabajando en mi estudio artístico de California, encargo regularmente animales vivos, réplicas, serpientes y bichos que son traídos por manipuladores. A menudo construyo elaborados decorados y luego acabo eligiendo las fotografías con simple atrezzo sobre un fondo negro.

Apps are curious things, they change the way we interact with each other.

We are somewhat anonymous and are free to say things we wouldn’t say in person. The current series started as a response to seeing “are you clean?” in guy’s profiles. Sometimes it refers to STDs but more and more it refers to poz and undetectable guys. It made me wonder, what is dirty? Where is the line between taste and discrimination? Is someone who is poz less of a person, damaged?

I paint men in pools. They are not erotic paintings, at least I don’t view them that way. More, they are profiles and representations of profiles I’ve seen online. I love pools and water for all the rich metaphors they come with, along with the distortion that happens from the outside viewing into the pool. To me it’s ironic because my early work was about the pool of humanity and social inclusion, and now I’m using pools to question inclusion within the group inside the pool.

David Jester (AMERICANO) Creo que todavía estoy envolviendo partes de la nueva serie en mi cabeza. El punto de partida fueron las aplicaciones para ligar online. Las aplicaciones son curiosas, cambian la forma en que interactuamos con los demás. Somos algo anónimos y tenemos libertad para decir cosas que no diríamos en persona. La serie actual empezó como respuesta a ver “¿estás limpio?” en los perfiles de los chicos. A veces se refiere a las ETS, pero cada vez más se refiere a los tipos poz y no detectables. Me hizo preguntarme: ¿qué es lo sucio? ¿Dónde está la línea entre el gusto y la discriminación? ¿Es alguien que es poz menos persona, dañado?

Pinto hombres en piscinas. No son cuadros eróticos, al menos yo no los veo así. Más bien son perfiles y representaciones de perfiles que he visto en Internet. Me encantan las piscinas y el agua por todas las ricas metáforas que conllevan, junto con la distorsión que se produce desde la visión exterior hacia la piscina. Para mí es irónico, porque mis primeros trabajos trataban sobre la piscina de la humanidad y la inclusión social, y ahora utilizo las piscinas para cuestionar la inclusión dentro del grupo que está dentro de la piscina.

Chroma’s Lockdown | Artist in Residency Ana López-Montes (Mexico City), Artist in StudioResidency @PRPGMX has focused her creative praxis on exploring the visual possibilities and materiality offered by the concepts of resilience and memory. Although recognized as a printmaker, she unfolds these concepts with other techniques such as collage, drawing, and painting.

Memory and its encounter with the present have been one of the main themes of her work in the past two years. To give space then meaning, or reinterpret, resignify those memories that inadvertently invade the present. A system of resilience through observation, listening, and introspection is shown as an inner landscape that offers a new possibility of the present.

Sometimes she hides in her gender or what is expected of it. She expresses this with layers of transparent color or different types of Japanese paper. The potentiality of her femininity, yet to be self-discovered, is given in faint lines, gestures, drawings without color. Minimizing expression, holding back, resisting passion, opinions, controlling her emotional experiences. Her work is a veiled interior design that seeks clarity, belonging, and above all, to stand out.

Ana López-Montes (Ciudad de México) Artista en EstudioResidencia @PRPGMX, ha centrado su praxis creativa en la exploración de las posibilidades visuales y la materialidad que ofrecen los conceptos de resiliencia y memoria. Aunque es reconocida como grabadora, despliega estos conceptos con otras técnicas como el collage, el dibujo y la pintura.

La memoria y su encuentro con el presente han sido uno de los temas principales de su trabajo en los últimos dos años. Dar espacio entonces al significado, o reinterpretar, resignificar esos recuerdos que invaden inadvertidamente el presente. Un sistema de resiliencia a través de la observación, la escucha y la introspección se muestra como un paisaje interior que ofrece una nueva posibilidad del presente.

A veces se esconde en su género o en lo que se espera de él.

Lo expresa con capas de color transparente o con diferentes tipos de papel japonés. La potencialidad de su feminidad, aún por descubrir, se da en líneas tenues, gestos, dibujos sin color. Minimiza la expresión, se contiene, se resiste a la pasión, a las opiniones, controla sus experiencias emocionales. Su obra es un interiorismo velado que busca la claridad, la pertenencia y, sobre todo, destacar.

Micheal Swank (AMERICAN) The themes of Micheal’s studio work are about recovery, discovery, and transmutation of trauma and identity.

In 2018, Swank returned to Mexico City, Mexico to dive deeper into his work which uses the paper advertisements on the walls of the streets in this mega-city.

Micheal explores the duality of growing up with a mentally ill ‘identical twin’ and the resulting PTSD he manages daily through his studio practice, meditation, and work within the queer community.

Swank decollages, photographs, gathers, reconstructs, revitalizes, and presents the materials as a dialogue; traditional materials vs. alternative, commercial vs. the streets, fear vs. strength, stigma vs. exaltation in art. “I am engaged in guerilla warfare for survival, but not against you or the elements, against myself.”

The prolific walls of disposable paper propaganda in the Mexico City streets reconnect the act of creation with life. The propaganda mirrors the immediacy of the process, acting as an anthropological snapshot and dialogue between the art and audience. I am embarked on a path fighting invisible demons, conversing with angels, and end in transfiguration.

Micheal Swank’s work is attitude transformed into authentic form, located to create dialogue, and engaged in ideology supporting transformation.

Micheal Swank (estadounidense) Los temas que trabaja Micheal tratan sobre la recuperación, el descubrimiento y la transmutación dentro de experiencias traumáticas y la identidad. En 2018, Swank regresó a la Ciudad de

México, para seguir produciendo, en sus creaciones utiliza los anuncios de papel pegados en las paredes de las calle de esta enorme ciudad.

Micheal explora la dualidad de crecer con un “gemelo” enfermo mental y el TEPT que desarrolló y que trata de procesar diariamente a través de su trabajo en el estudio, la meditación y sus aportes a la comunidad queer.

Swank descoloca, fotografía, reúne, reconstruye, revitaliza y presenta todos estos materiales en forma de diálogo; confronta materiales tradicionales frente a alternativos, publicidad frente a la calle, miedo frente a fuerza, estigma frente a exaltación, todo por medio del arte.

“Estoy librando una guerra de guerrillas para sobrevivir, pero no contra ti ni contra los

elementos, sino contra mí mismo”.

Los prolíficos muros de propaganda de papel desechable en las calles de la Ciudad de México reconectan el acto de creación con la vida.

La propaganda refleja la inmediatez del proceso, actuando como suceso antropológico, para detonar un diálogo entre el arte y el público.

“Mediante cada acto de creación me embarco en un camino que lucha contra demonios invisibles, converso con ángeles, proceso que termina con la transfiguración.”

La obra de Micheal Swank es una actitud. transformadora de forma auténtica, pensada para crear un diálogo y comprometida con la ideología que apoya la metamorfosis.
